1 Declaration of Immunity

۞ بَرَاۤءَةࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۤ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١

This is a declaration of immunity from Allâh and His ‘Messenger’ to the ‘Polytheists’ with whom you made a treaty.

barāatun mina l-lahi warasūlihi ilā alladhīna ʿāhadttum mina l-mush'rikīn

فَسِیحُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَرۡبَعَةَ أَشۡهُرࣲ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّكُمۡ غَیۡرُ مُعۡجِزِی ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡزِی ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٢

Go to and fro in the land freely and securely four month, but (you should) know that you will never be able to frustrate (the power) of Allâh, and that Allâh will disgrace those who lack Faith in Him.

fasīḥū fī l-arḍi arbaʿata ashhurin wa-iʿ'lamū annakum ghayru muʿ'jizī l-lahi wa-anna l-laha mukh'zī l-kāfirīn

وَأَذَ ٰنࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۤ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡحَجِّ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ وَرَسُولُهُۥۚ فَإِن تُبۡتُمۡ فَهُوَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ فَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّكُمۡ غَیۡرُ مُعۡجِزِی ٱللَّهِۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمٍ ۝٣

This is a declaration from Allâh and His ‘Messenger’ to the people, on the day of the greater ‘Pilgrimage’, that Allâh is free from any obligation towards the ‘Polytheists’, and His ‘Messenger’ also. Wherefore if you repent, this will be better for you; but if you choose to turn away, then (you you will need to) know that you will never be able to frustrate (the power) of Allâh. Thus, (O’ Muhammad), give tidings of a painful doom to those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh).

wa-adhānun mina l-lahi warasūlihi ilā l-nāsi yawma l-ḥaji l-akbari anna l-laha barīon mina l-mush'rikīna warasūluhu fa-in tub'tum fahuwa khayrun lakum wa-in tawallaytum fa-iʿ'lamū annakum ghayru muʿ'jizī l-lahi wabashiri alladhīna kafarū biʿadhābin alīmi

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ یَنقُصُوكُمۡ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَمۡ یُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَحَدࣰا فَأَتِمُّوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِمۡ عَهۡدَهُمۡ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٤

Except such of the ‘Polytheists’ with whom you have a treaty, and who afterwards will not fail you in any instance, nor assist any other against you. Thus, fulfill their treaty to them to the end of their term. Allâh demonstrates his own love for the ‘Pious’/ or for those who show honor and reverence for Him.

illā alladhīna ʿāhadttum mina l-mush'rikīna thumma lam yanquṣūkum shayan walam yuẓāhirū ʿalaykum aḥadan fa-atimmū ilayhim ʿahdahum ilā muddatihim inna l-laha yuḥibbu l-mutaqīn

فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلۡأَشۡهُرُ ٱلۡحُرُمُ فَٱقۡتُلُوا۟ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ حَیۡثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمۡ وَخُذُوهُمۡ وَٱحۡصُرُوهُمۡ وَٱقۡعُدُوا۟ لَهُمۡ كُلَّ مَرۡصَدࣲۚ فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّوا۟ سَبِیلَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٥

So when the sacred months have passed, then fight and kill the ‘Polytheists’ wherever you find them, take them prisoners, besiege them and lay wait for them in every convenient place. But if it happens that they repent, establish the regular Prayer, and pay Zakāt (i.e. the prescribed purifying alms), then let them go freely. Indeed, Allâh is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.

fa-idhā insalakha l-ashhuru l-ḥurumu fa-uq'tulū l-mush'rikīna ḥaythu wajadttumūhum wakhudhūhum wa-uḥ'ṣurūhum wa-uq'ʿudū lahum kulla marṣadin fa-in tābū wa-aqāmū l-ṣalata waātawū l-zakata fakhallū sabīlahum inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

وَإِنۡ أَحَدࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ٱسۡتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرۡهُ حَتَّىٰ یَسۡمَعَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبۡلِغۡهُ مَأۡمَنَهُۥۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦

If it happens that any one of the ‘Polytheists’ seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the word of Allâh, and afterwards let him reach the place of his security. This is because they are a people who lack knowledge (of Allâh).

wa-in aḥadun mina l-mush'rikīna is'tajāraka fa-ajir'hu ḥattā yasmaʿa kalāma l-lahi thumma abligh'hu mamanahu dhālika bi-annahum qawmun lā yaʿlamūn

2 Reasons for the Immunity

كَیۡفَ یَكُونُ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ عَهۡدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦۤ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ عَـٰهَدتُّمۡ عِندَ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِۖ فَمَا ٱسۡتَقَـٰمُوا۟ لَكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَقِیمُوا۟ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٧

How can the ‘Polytheists’ have a covenant with Allâh and His ‘Messenger’, except those with whom you made a peace treaty in the vicinity of the ‘Sacred Mosque’? So long as they are true to you, be true unto them. Indeed, Allâh demonstrates his own love for the ‘Pious’/or for those who show honor and reverence for him.

kayfa yakūnu lil'mush'rikīna ʿahdun ʿinda l-lahi waʿinda rasūlihi illā alladhīna ʿāhadttum ʿinda l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi famā is'taqāmū lakum fa-is'taqīmū lahum inna l-laha yuḥibbu l-mutaqīn

كَیۡفَ وَإِن یَظۡهَرُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ لَا یَرۡقُبُوا۟ فِیكُمۡ إِلࣰّا وَلَا ذِمَّةࣰۚ یُرۡضُونَكُم بِأَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَتَأۡبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَـٰسِقُونَ ۝٨

How (can they have a treaty )? If they prevail against you, they will not regard in you, either any tie of kinship or covenant of protection? They flatter you with their sweet talk, but their hearts are averse from you; and most of them are sons of disobedience.

kayfa wa-in yaẓharū ʿalaykum lā yarqubū fīkum illan walā dhimmatan yur'ḍūnakum bi-afwāhihim watabā qulūbuhum wa-aktharuhum fāsiqūn

ٱشۡتَرَوۡا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنࣰا قَلِیلࣰا فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَاۤءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩

They have exchanged the ‘Revelations of Allâh’ for a small price and inhibited men from His Way. Evil indeed is that which they used to do.

ish'taraw biāyāti l-lahi thamanan qalīlan faṣaddū ʿan sabīlihi innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūn

لَا یَرۡقُبُونَ فِی مُؤۡمِنٍ إِلࣰّا وَلَا ذِمَّةࣰۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدُونَ ۝١٠

They regard not in a monotheistic believer either any tie of kinship or covenant of protection. It is those who are the transgressors.

lā yarqubūna fī mu'minin illan walā dhimmatan wa-ulāika humu l-muʿ'tadūn

فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخۡوَ ٰنُكُمۡ فِی ٱلدِّینِۗ وَنُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١١

But if they repent, establish the regular Prayer and pay Zakāt (i.e. the prescribed purifying alms), then they are your brethren in Faith. We distinctly explain the ‘Revelations’ for a people who have spiritual gift of knowledge.

fa-in tābū wa-aqāmū l-ṣalata waātawū l-zakata fa-ikh'wānukum fī l-dīni wanufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yaʿlamūn

وَإِن نَّكَثُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ عَهۡدِهِمۡ وَطَعَنُوا۟ فِی دِینِكُمۡ فَقَـٰتِلُوۤا۟ أَىِٕمَّةَ ٱلۡكُفۡرِ إِنَّهُمۡ لَاۤ أَیۡمَـٰنَ لَهُمۡ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَنتَهُونَ ۝١٢

But if they violate their oaths after their covenant, and openly revile your Faith in an abusive manner, then fight the ‘Leaders of Atheism’ for no oaths are binding with them- so that they may refrain (from disbelief & hostility toward Islam and the Muslims).

wa-in nakathū aymānahum min baʿdi ʿahdihim waṭaʿanū fī dīnikum faqātilū a-immata l-kuf'ri innahum lā aymāna lahum laʿallahum yantahūn

أَلَا تُقَـٰتِلُونَ قَوۡمࣰا نَّكَثُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُمۡ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِإِخۡرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمۡ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۚ أَتَخۡشَوۡنَهُمۡۚ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخۡشَوۡهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣

Will you not fight against people who have violated their oaths and planned to expel the ‘Messenger’ of Allâh, and who were the first to attack you? Do you fear them? It is (the wrath of) Allâh that you should fear, if you are the Monotheistic Believers.

alā tuqātilūna qawman nakathū aymānahum wahammū bi-ikh'rāji l-rasūli wahum badaūkum awwala marratin atakhshawnahum fal-lahu aḥaqqu an takhshawhu in kuntum mu'minīn

قَـٰتِلُوهُمۡ یُعَذِّبۡهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِأَیۡدِیكُمۡ وَیُخۡزِهِمۡ وَیَنصُرۡكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَیَشۡفِ صُدُورَ قَوۡمࣲ مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٤

(Because of their disbelief & hostility toward Islam and the Muslims), Fight against them! Allâh will chastise them by your hands, cover them with ignominy, and grant you victory over them, healing the hearts of the ‘Monotheistic Believers’.

qātilūhum yuʿadhib'humu l-lahu bi-aydīkum wayukh'zihim wayanṣur'kum ʿalayhim wayashfi ṣudūra qawmin mu'minīn

وَیُذۡهِبۡ غَیۡظَ قُلُوبِهِمۡۗ وَیَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاۤءُۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمٌ ۝١٥

He will eliminate the indignation of their hearts, and turns in forgiveness to whom He wills. Lo! Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

wayudh'hib ghayẓa qulūbihim wayatūbu l-lahu ʿalā man yashāu wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

أَمۡ حَسِبۡتُمۡ أَن تُتۡرَكُوا۟ وَلَمَّا یَعۡلَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ مِنكُمۡ وَلَمۡ یَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا رَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَلِیجَةࣰۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦

Do you think, (O" Monotheistic Believers), that Allâh will leave you (without being tempted), whereas Allâh has not yet identified those among you who struggle hard for His cause, and take none for guardians except for Allâh, His ‘Messenger’ and the ‘Monotheistic Believers’? Allâh is well acquainted with that which you do.

am ḥasib'tum an tut'rakū walammā yaʿlami l-lahu alladhīna jāhadū minkum walam yattakhidhū min dūni l-lahi walā rasūlihi walā l-mu'minīna walījatan wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn

3 Idolaters' Service of the Sacred House

مَا كَانَ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ أَن یَعۡمُرُوا۟ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَـٰهِدِینَ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِم بِٱلۡكُفۡرِۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حَبِطَتۡ أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡ وَفِی ٱلنَّارِ هُمۡ خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١٧

It is not for the ‘Polytheists’ to maintain the mosques of Allâh, while they bear witness to disbelief in the Oneness of Allâh against their own selves. They are the ones whose works have become null and void; and in the Fire shall they abide.

mā kāna lil'mush'rikīna an yaʿmurū masājida l-lahi shāhidīna ʿalā anfusihim bil-kuf'ri ulāika ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum wafī l-nāri hum khālidūn

إِنَّمَا یَعۡمُرُ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَلَمۡ یَخۡشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۖ فَعَسَىٰۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَن یَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ ۝١٨

The Mosques of Allâh will be maintained only by those who believe in Allâh and in the ‘Last Day’, establish the regular Prayer and pay Zakāt (i.e. the prescribed purifying alms), and fear none but show honor and reverence for Allâh. It is they who are likely to be rightly guided.

innamā yaʿmuru masājida l-lahi man āmana bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wa-aqāma l-ṣalata waātā l-zakata walam yakhsha illā l-laha faʿasā ulāika an yakūnū mina l-muh'tadīn

۞ أَجَعَلۡتُمۡ سِقَایَةَ ٱلۡحَاۤجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِ كَمَنۡ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَجَـٰهَدَ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ لَا یَسۡتَوُۥنَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٩

Do you consider giving drink to the pilgrims, or the maintenance of the ‘Sacred Mosque’ as equal to (the deeds of) of those who believe in Allâh and in the ‘Last Day;, and strive hard and fight (bravely) in serving the cause of Allâh? They are not equal in the sight of Allâh. Allâh does not give divine guidance to the ones who are grossly unfair and morally wrong.

ajaʿaltum siqāyata l-ḥāji waʿimārata l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi kaman āmana bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wajāhada fī sabīli l-lahi lā yastawūna ʿinda l-lahi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِهِمۡ أَعۡظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِندَ ٱللَّهِۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَاۤىِٕزُونَ ۝٢٠

Those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, emigrate and struggle hard in (serving) the cause of Allâh with their wealth and with their lives are in the highest rank of honor with Allâh. And these are ones who are the triumphant.

alladhīna āmanū wahājarū wajāhadū fī sabīli l-lahi bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim aʿẓamu darajatan ʿinda l-lahi wa-ulāika humu l-fāizūn

یُبَشِّرُهُمۡ رَبُّهُم بِرَحۡمَةࣲ مِّنۡهُ وَرِضۡوَ ٰنࣲ وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ لَّهُمۡ فِیهَا نَعِیمࣱ مُّقِیمٌ ۝٢١

Their Lord gives them the joyful news of a clemency from Him, and goodly acceptance; for them await Gardens (in ‘Al-Jannah’) in which there is enduring delight.

yubashiruhum rabbuhum biraḥmatin min'hu wariḍ'wānin wajannātin lahum fīhā naʿīmun muqīmu

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥۤ أَجۡرٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝٢٢

They will abide therein. Surely with Allâh is a great reward.

khālidīna fīhā abadan inna l-laha ʿindahu ajrun ʿaẓīmu

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوۤا۟ ءَابَاۤءَكُمۡ وَإِخۡوَ ٰنَكُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ إِنِ ٱسۡتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلۡكُفۡرَ عَلَى ٱلۡإِیمَـٰنِۚ وَمَن یَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمۡ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٢٣

O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, take not your fathers or your brothers for guardians if they prefer disbelief in Allâh over having faith in Him. Whosoever of you takes them for guardians, such are the one who are grossly unfair and morally wrong.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū ābāakum wa-ikh'wānakum awliyāa ini is'taḥabbū l-kuf'ra ʿalā l-īmāni waman yatawallahum minkum fa-ulāika humu l-ẓālimūn

قُلۡ إِن كَانَ ءَابَاۤؤُكُمۡ وَأَبۡنَاۤؤُكُمۡ وَإِخۡوَ ٰنُكُمۡ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجُكُمۡ وَعَشِیرَتُكُمۡ وَأَمۡوَ ٰلٌ ٱقۡتَرَفۡتُمُوهَا وَتِجَـٰرَةࣱ تَخۡشَوۡنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنُ تَرۡضَوۡنَهَاۤ أَحَبَّ إِلَیۡكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَجِهَادࣲ فِی سَبِیلِهِۦ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یَأۡتِیَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٢٤

Say, (O’ Muhammad), "If your fathers, or your sons, or your brothers, or your wives, or your kindred, or the wealth that you have acquired, or the commerce in which you fear a decline, or the dwellings in which you delight are more beloved to you than Allâh, and His ‘Messenger’, and striving hard in His cause; then wait and watch until Allâh will send His Command. Allâh will not let His (divine) guidance reach those who choose to walk in the path of obedience.

qul in kāna ābāukum wa-abnāukum wa-ikh'wānukum wa-azwājukum waʿashīratukum wa-amwālun iq'taraftumūhā watijāratun takhshawna kasādahā wamasākinu tarḍawnahā aḥabba ilaykum mina l-lahi warasūlihi wajihādin fī sabīlihi fatarabbaṣū ḥattā yatiya l-lahu bi-amrihi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīn

4 Islam made Triumphant in Arabia

لَقَدۡ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِی مَوَاطِنَ كَثِیرَةࣲ وَیَوۡمَ حُنَیۡنٍ إِذۡ أَعۡجَبَتۡكُمۡ كَثۡرَتُكُمۡ فَلَمۡ تُغۡنِ عَنكُمۡ شَیۡءࣰا وَضَاقَتۡ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتۡ ثُمَّ وَلَّیۡتُم مُّدۡبِرِینَ ۝٢٥

Verily, Allâh has granted you victory on many battles including the Day of Hunayn, when you were enamoured of the number of your men who proved to be of no avail, and the earth became too strait for you, in spite of its spacious, then you turned back in flight.

laqad naṣarakumu l-lahu fī mawāṭina kathīratin wayawma ḥunaynin idh aʿjabatkum kathratukum falam tugh'ni ʿankum shayan waḍāqat ʿalaykumu l-arḍu bimā raḥubat thumma wallaytum mud'birīn

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِینَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودࣰا لَّمۡ تَرَوۡهَا وَعَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَاۤءُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٢٦

Afterwards Allâh poured down His tranquility upon His ‘Messenger’ and upon the ‘Monotheistic Believers’,and sent down (to your aid) troops of ‘Angels’ which you saw not. Thus, He chastised those who indulged in disbelief. Such is the requital for the faithless people.

thumma anzala l-lahu sakīnatahu ʿalā rasūlihi waʿalā l-mu'minīna wa-anzala junūdan lam tarawhā waʿadhaba alladhīna kafarū wadhālika jazāu l-kāfirīn

ثُمَّ یَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَ ٰلِكَ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاۤءُۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٢٧

Nevertheless Allâh will accept the repentance after that for whom He wills. And Allâh is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.

thumma yatūbu l-lahu min baʿdi dhālika ʿalā man yashāu wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmu

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡمُشۡرِكُونَ نَجَسࣱ فَلَا یَقۡرَبُوا۟ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدَ ٱلۡحَرَامَ بَعۡدَ عَامِهِمۡ هَـٰذَاۚ وَإِنۡ خِفۡتُمۡ عَیۡلَةࣰ فَسَوۡفَ یُغۡنِیكُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦۤ إِن شَاۤءَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٢٨

O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, the polytheists are certainly impure, so let them not come near to the ‘Sacred Mosque’ (‘Al-Masjid Al-Haram’) after this year of theirs. If you fear indigence, Allâh will enrich you through His Own Bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū innamā l-mush'rikūna najasun falā yaqrabū l-masjida l-ḥarāma baʿda ʿāmihim hādhā wa-in khif'tum ʿaylatan fasawfa yugh'nīkumu l-lahu min faḍlihi in shāa inna l-laha ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَلَا یُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا یَدِینُونَ دِینَ ٱلۡحَقِّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ حَتَّىٰ یُعۡطُوا۟ ٱلۡجِزۡیَةَ عَن یَدࣲ وَهُمۡ صَـٰغِرُونَ ۝٢٩

Fight against those who neither believe in Allâh nor the ‘Last Day’, who do not prohibit what Allâh and His ‘Messenger’ have prohibited, and refuse to acknowledge the Religion of the Truth, being among those who have been given the ‘Scripture’, until they pay the Jizyah out of hand and have been humbled.

qātilū alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-lahi walā bil-yawmi l-ākhiri walā yuḥarrimūna mā ḥarrama l-lahu warasūluhu walā yadīnūna dīna l-ḥaqi mina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba ḥattā yuʿ'ṭū l-jiz'yata ʿan yadin wahum ṣāghirūn

5 Islam will Triumph in the World

وَقَالَتِ ٱلۡیَهُودُ عُزَیۡرٌ ٱبۡنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى ٱلۡمَسِیحُ ٱبۡنُ ٱللَّهِۖ ذَ ٰلِكَ قَوۡلُهُم بِأَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡۖ یُضَـٰهِءُونَ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلُۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ أَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٣٠

The Jews say: "Ezra is the son of Allâh". The Christians say: "Messiah is the son of Allâh." They say this only with their mouths, imitating the saying of those who indulge in ‘Polytheism’ before them. May Allâh rebuke all the ‘Polytheists’! How can they be deceived (into going away from the established course)?

waqālati l-yahūdu ʿuzayrun ub'nu l-lahi waqālati l-naṣārā l-masīḥu ub'nu l-lahi dhālika qawluhum bi-afwāhihim yuḍāhiūna qawla alladhīna kafarū min qablu qātalahumu l-lahu annā yu'fakūn

ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَحۡبَارَهُمۡ وَرُهۡبَـٰنَهُمۡ أَرۡبَابࣰا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡمَسِیحَ ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ وَمَاۤ أُمِرُوۤا۟ إِلَّا لِیَعۡبُدُوۤا۟ إِلَـٰهࣰا وَ ٰحِدࣰاۖ لَّاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٣١

They take their rabbis and monks to be their lords, besides Allâh, and (they take as their Lord) ‘Christ, son of Mary’; although they are commanded to worship ( & venerate) one God only. There is no God but He. Glorified is He above whatever they associate with Him.

ittakhadhū aḥbārahum waruh'bānahum arbāban min dūni l-lahi wal-masīḥa ib'na maryama wamā umirū illā liyaʿbudū ilāhan wāḥidan lā ilāha illā huwa sub'ḥānahu ʿammā yush'rikūn

یُرِیدُونَ أَن یُطۡفِءُوا۟ نُورَ ٱللَّهِ بِأَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَیَأۡبَى ٱللَّهُ إِلَّاۤ أَن یُتِمَّ نُورَهُۥ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٣٢

They eagerly pursue and seek to extinguish the Light of Allâh with their mouths. But Allâh intends no other than to perfect His Light. No matter how detestable is to those who lack Faith in Allâh.

yurīdūna an yuṭ'fiū nūra l-lahi bi-afwāhihim wayabā l-lahu illā an yutimma nūrahu walaw kariha l-kāfirūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَرۡسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَدِینِ ٱلۡحَقِّ لِیُظۡهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّینِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٣٣

He is the One who has sent His ‘Messenger’ with the true source of inner guidance and spiritual transformation, and with the Religion of the Truth so that He may make it prevail over all religions. No matter how detestable is to the ‘Polytheists’.

huwa alladhī arsala rasūlahu bil-hudā wadīni l-ḥaqi liyuẓ'hirahu ʿalā l-dīni kullihi walaw kariha l-mush'rikūn

۞ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِنَّ كَثِیرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَحۡبَارِ وَٱلرُّهۡبَانِ لَیَأۡكُلُونَ أَمۡوَ ٰلَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ وَیَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱلَّذِینَ یَكۡنِزُونَ ٱلذَّهَبَ وَٱلۡفِضَّةَ وَلَا یُنفِقُونَهَا فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَبَشِّرۡهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٤

O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, there are many of the (‘Jewish’) rabbis and (‘Christian’) monks, who devour the wealth of the people in vanity, and hinder them from the way of Allâh. However, those who hoard up gold and silver, and expend it not on (serving) the cause of Allâh. Unto them, (O’ Muhammad), give the awful tidings of a painful chastisement.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū inna kathīran mina l-aḥbāri wal-ruh'bāni layakulūna amwāla l-nāsi bil-bāṭili wayaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi wa-alladhīna yaknizūna l-dhahaba wal-fiḍata walā yunfiqūnahā fī sabīli l-lahi fabashir'hum biʿadhābin alīmi

یَوۡمَ یُحۡمَىٰ عَلَیۡهَا فِی نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكۡوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمۡ وَجُنُوبُهُمۡ وَظُهُورُهُمۡۖ هَـٰذَا مَا كَنَزۡتُمۡ لِأَنفُسِكُمۡ فَذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡنِزُونَ ۝٣٥

The day will come when their gold and silver will be intensely heated in the fire of ‘Gehenna’, therewith their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be stigmatized. (It will be said unto them), "This is the treasure which you hoarded for yourselves. Thus, taste of that which you used to hoard."

yawma yuḥ'mā ʿalayhā fī nāri jahannama fatuk'wā bihā jibāhuhum wajunūbuhum waẓuhūruhum hādhā mā kanaztum li-anfusikum fadhūqū mā kuntum taknizūn

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثۡنَا عَشَرَ شَهۡرࣰا فِی كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ یَوۡمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۡهَاۤ أَرۡبَعَةٌ حُرُمࣱۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلدِّینُ ٱلۡقَیِّمُۚ فَلَا تَظۡلِمُوا۟ فِیهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمۡۚ وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ كَاۤفَّةࣰ كَمَا یُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمۡ كَاۤفَّةࣰۚ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣٦

Indeed, the number of months with Allâh is twelve months, which were ordained in the Book of Allâh, since the day when He created the heavens and earth. Of these, four are sacred. This is the upright faith. Therefore, deal justly with your own selves therein. Fight against the Polytheists collectively as they fight against you collectively and know that Allâh is with the ‘Pious’ or / with those who how honor and reverence for Allâh.

inna ʿiddata l-shuhūri ʿinda l-lahi ith'nā ʿashara shahran fī kitābi l-lahi yawma khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa min'hā arbaʿatun ḥurumun dhālika l-dīnu l-qayimu falā taẓlimū fīhinna anfusakum waqātilū l-mush'rikīna kāffatan kamā yuqātilūnakum kāffatan wa-iʿ'lamū anna l-laha maʿa l-mutaqīn

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّسِیۤءُ زِیَادَةࣱ فِی ٱلۡكُفۡرِۖ یُضَلُّ بِهِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَامࣰا وَیُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَامࣰا لِّیُوَاطِءُوا۟ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ فَیُحِلُّوا۟ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُۚ زُیِّنَ لَهُمۡ سُوۤءُ أَعۡمَـٰلِهِمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٣٧

Verily postponement (of a sacred month) is indeed only an increase in disbelief whereby those who indulge in disbelief (in Allâh) are led astray, permitted in one year and forbidden in another, in order that they may adjust the number of the months that Allâh has commanded to be kept sacred. Thus, they (deliberately) make lawful what Allâh has forbidden. The evil of their deeds is decked out fair to them. And Allâh does not give divine guidance to those who lack Faith (in Him).

innamā l-nasīu ziyādatun fī l-kuf'ri yuḍallu bihi alladhīna kafarū yuḥillūnahu ʿāman wayuḥarrimūnahu ʿāman liyuwāṭiū ʿiddata mā ḥarrama l-lahu fayuḥillū mā ḥarrama l-lahu zuyyina lahum sūu aʿmālihim wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-kāfirīn

6 The Tabuk Expedition

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَا لَكُمۡ إِذَا قِیلَ لَكُمُ ٱنفِرُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ ٱثَّاقَلۡتُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ أَرَضِیتُم بِٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا مِنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ فَمَا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِیلٌ ۝٣٨

O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism , What ails you that when you are asked to go forth (to the Expedition of Tabūk) in (serving) the cause of Allâh, you cling heavily to the earth? Are you fully contented with this ‘worldly life’ instead of the ‘Hereafter’? (You need to be aware that) the provision of this ‘worldly life’, in respect of the ‘Hereafter’, is but modicum.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū mā lakum idhā qīla lakumu infirū fī sabīli l-lahi ithāqaltum ilā l-arḍi araḍītum bil-ḥayati l-dun'yā mina l-ākhirati famā matāʿu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā fī l-ākhirati illā qalīlu

إِلَّا تَنفِرُوا۟ یُعَذِّبۡكُمۡ عَذَابًا أَلِیمࣰا وَیَسۡتَبۡدِلۡ قَوۡمًا غَیۡرَكُمۡ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَیۡءࣰاۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرٌ ۝٣٩

If it happens that you do not go forth, then He will chastise you with an extremely painful torment, placing another people instead of you; and you will not harm Him at all. Allâh is capable of doing whatever He wills.

illā tanfirū yuʿadhib'kum ʿadhāban alīman wayastabdil qawman ghayrakum walā taḍurrūhu shayan wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدۡ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذۡ أَخۡرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِیَ ٱثۡنَیۡنِ إِذۡ هُمَا فِی ٱلۡغَارِ إِذۡ یَقُولُ لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحۡزَنۡ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَاۖ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِینَتَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِ وَأَیَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودࣲ لَّمۡ تَرَوۡهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلسُّفۡلَىٰۗ وَكَلِمَةُ ٱللَّهِ هِیَ ٱلۡعُلۡیَاۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمٌ ۝٤٠

If you do not help (the ‘Prophet’), Allâh will definitely help him as He helped him formerly, when those who indulge in ‘Polytheism’ drove him out (of ‘Mecca’), the second of two; when they were both in the cave, when he said unto his companion, "Grieve not! Indeed, Allâh is with us." Then Allâh sent His tranquility upon him, and strengthened him with hosts you cannot not see, and made the word of those who indulge in ‘Polytheism’ to be abased, and the word of Allâh was highly exalted. Lo! Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

illā tanṣurūhu faqad naṣarahu l-lahu idh akhrajahu alladhīna kafarū thāniya ith'nayni idh humā fī l-ghāri idh yaqūlu liṣāḥibihi lā taḥzan inna l-laha maʿanā fa-anzala l-lahu sakīnatahu ʿalayhi wa-ayyadahu bijunūdin lam tarawhā wajaʿala kalimata alladhīna kafarū l-suf'lā wakalimatu l-lahi hiya l-ʿul'yā wal-lahu ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

ٱنفِرُوا۟ خِفَافࣰا وَثِقَالࣰا وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَأَنفُسِكُمۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤١

Go forth (to battle), both light, and heavy, strive hard and fight (bravely) in (serving) the cause of Allâh with your wealth and your lives. This is better for you, if only you knew.

infirū khifāfan wathiqālan wajāhidū bi-amwālikum wa-anfusikum fī sabīli l-lahi dhālikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūn

لَوۡ كَانَ عَرَضࣰا قَرِیبࣰا وَسَفَرࣰا قَاصِدࣰا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَـٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُۚ وَسَیَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡنَا لَخَرَجۡنَا مَعَكُمۡ یُهۡلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٤٢

If it had been a near advantage and an easy journey, the ‘Hypocrites’ would definitely have followed you. But the journey was too long and tedious for them. Still they will swear by God (saying), "If we had been able (to go forth), we would obviously have accompanied you." They destroy their own selves (through false oaths and perjury) , and Allâh Knows that they are liars.

law kāna ʿaraḍan qarīban wasafaran qāṣidan la-ittabaʿūka walākin baʿudat ʿalayhimu l-shuqatu wasayaḥlifūna bil-lahi lawi is'taṭaʿnā lakharajnā maʿakum yuh'likūna anfusahum wal-lahu yaʿlamu innahum lakādhibūn

7 The Hypocrites

عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنكَ لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ یَتَبَیَّنَ لَكَ ٱلَّذِینَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَتَعۡلَمَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٤٣

Allâh has already forgiven you, (O’ Muhammad). Why did you give them permission (to stay at home)? (You should have waited) until it became obvious to you who were truthful; and you knew who were the liars.

lā yastadhinuka alladhīna yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri an yujāhidū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-mutaqīn

لَا یَسۡتَءۡذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ أَن یُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِهِمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمُۢ بِٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٤٤

Those who believe in Allâh and the ‘Last Day’ would not ask your leave to be exempted from fighting with their wealth and their lives. Allâh is Aware of the ‘Pious’.

La yasta/thinuka allatheena yu/minoona biAllahi waalyawmi al-akhiri an yujahidoo bi-amwalihim waanfusihim waAllahu AAaleemun bialmuttaqeena

إِنَّمَا یَسۡتَءۡذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَٱرۡتَابَتۡ قُلُوبُهُمۡ فَهُمۡ فِی رَیۡبِهِمۡ یَتَرَدَّدُونَ ۝٤٥

Only those ask you for exemption who do not believe in Allâh and the ‘Last Day’, and whose hearts harbour doubts. Thus, in their Lord, they hesitate to believe.

innamā yastadhinuka alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wa-ir'tābat qulūbuhum fahum fī raybihim yataraddadūn

۞ وَلَوۡ أَرَادُوا۟ ٱلۡخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا۟ لَهُۥ عُدَّةࣰ وَلَـٰكِن كَرِهَ ٱللَّهُ ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمۡ فَثَبَّطَهُمۡ وَقِیلَ ٱقۡعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلۡقَـٰعِدِینَ ۝٤٦

If they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared themselves (for Journey). However, Allâh was averse to their being sent forth; so he caused them to come to an abrupt end, and it was said (unto them): "Sit with those who are inactive."

walaw arādū l-khurūja la-aʿaddū lahu ʿuddatan walākin kariha l-lahu inbiʿāthahum fathabbaṭahum waqīla uq'ʿudū maʿa l-qāʿidīn

لَوۡ خَرَجُوا۟ فِیكُم مَّا زَادُوكُمۡ إِلَّا خَبَالࣰا وَلَأَوۡضَعُوا۟ خِلَـٰلَكُمۡ یَبۡغُونَكُمُ ٱلۡفِتۡنَةَ وَفِیكُمۡ سَمَّـٰعُونَ لَهُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمُۢ بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٤٧

If they had gone forth with you, they would have added to you nothing except confusion, and would have run to and fro between you, stirring you up to sedition ; and there would have been some among you, who would have listened to them. Allâh is Fully Aware of those who are grossly unfair and morally wrong.

law kharajū fīkum mā zādūkum illā khabālan wala-awḍaʿū khilālakum yabghūnakumu l-fit'nata wafīkum sammāʿūna lahum wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-ẓālimīn

لَقَدِ ٱبۡتَغَوُا۟ ٱلۡفِتۡنَةَ مِن قَبۡلُ وَقَلَّبُوا۟ لَكَ ٱلۡأُمُورَ حَتَّىٰ جَاۤءَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَظَهَرَ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ وَهُمۡ كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٤٨

Verily, they had sought to cause sedition before, and devised all manner of plots against you until the truth came, and the decree of Allâh appeared, though they were averse.

laqadi ib'taghawū l-fit'nata min qablu waqallabū laka l-umūra ḥattā jāa l-ḥaqu waẓahara amru l-lahi wahum kārihūn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَقُولُ ٱئۡذَن لِّی وَلَا تَفۡتِنِّیۤۚ أَلَا فِی ٱلۡفِتۡنَةِ سَقَطُوا۟ۗ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِیطَةُۢ بِٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٤٩

There is of them who says unto you: "Give me leave to stay behind, and do not expose me to temptation.” Have they not fallen yet into temptation at home? Assuredly ‘Gehenna’ will encompass those who lack Faith ( in Allâh).

wamin'hum man yaqūlu i'dhan lī walā taftinnī alā fī l-fit'nati saqaṭū wa-inna jahannama lamuḥīṭatun bil-kāfirīn

إِن تُصِبۡكَ حَسَنَةࣱ تَسُؤۡهُمۡۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡكَ مُصِیبَةࣱ یَقُولُوا۟ قَدۡ أَخَذۡنَاۤ أَمۡرَنَا مِن قَبۡلُ وَیَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُمۡ فَرِحُونَ ۝٥٠

If it happens that good thing befell you (O’ Muhammad), it would cause great distress to them. But if a misfortune befell you, they would say: "We took our precaution beforehand;” and they would turn their backs, rejoicing over your misery.

in tuṣib'ka ḥasanatun tasu'hum wa-in tuṣib'ka muṣībatun yaqūlū qad akhadhnā amranā min qablu wayatawallaw wahum fariḥūn

قُل لَّن یُصِیبَنَاۤ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوۡلَىٰنَاۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥١

(O’ Muhammad), say: "Nothing will afflict us except what Allâh has ordained for us. He is our Great Guardian." Thus, let the Monotheistic Believers depend on Allâh with full trust.

qul lan yuṣībanā illā mā kataba l-lahu lanā huwa mawlānā waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

قُلۡ هَلۡ تَرَبَّصُونَ بِنَاۤ إِلَّاۤ إِحۡدَى ٱلۡحُسۡنَیَیۡنِۖ وَنَحۡنُ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمۡ أَن یُصِیبَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابࣲ مِّنۡ عِندِهِۦۤ أَوۡ بِأَیۡدِینَاۖ فَتَرَبَّصُوۤا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّتَرَبِّصُونَ ۝٥٢

(O’ Muhammad), say: “What! Do you expect any other should befall us, than one of the two most excellent things, (either victory or martyrdom)? But we expect concerning you that Allâh would inflict a severe punishment on you, either from Himself, or by our hands. Thus, wait to see what will be the outcome; for we will wait with you.”

qul hal tarabbaṣūna binā illā iḥ'dā l-ḥus'nayayni wanaḥnu natarabbaṣu bikum an yuṣībakumu l-lahu biʿadhābin min ʿindihi aw bi-aydīnā fatarabbaṣū innā maʿakum mutarabbiṣūn

قُلۡ أَنفِقُوا۟ طَوۡعًا أَوۡ كَرۡهࣰا لَّن یُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمۡ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا فَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٥٣

(O’ Muhammad), say: "Whether you expand your wealth for (serving) the cause of Allâh, willingly or involuntarily, it will not be accepted from you. Indeed, you are not more than a folk of the sons of disobedience.”

qul anfiqū ṭawʿan aw karhan lan yutaqabbala minkum innakum kuntum qawman fāsiqīn

وَمَا مَنَعَهُمۡ أَن تُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُمۡ نَفَقَـٰتُهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَنَّهُمۡ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا یَأۡتُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِلَّا وَهُمۡ كُسَالَىٰ وَلَا یُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمۡ كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٥٤

Nothing hinders their contributions from being accepted of them, but that they disbelieve in Allâh and His Messenger, and they come not to prayer except as idlers, and that they offer not contributions for (serving) the cause of Allâh but reluctantly.

wamā manaʿahum an tuq'bala min'hum nafaqātuhum illā annahum kafarū bil-lahi wabirasūlihi walā yatūna l-ṣalata illā wahum kusālā walā yunfiqūna illā wahum kārihūn

فَلَا تُعۡجِبۡكَ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُمۡۚ إِنَّمَا یُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ لِیُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَتَزۡهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٥٥

Let not therefore their wealth, or their children impress you. Verily Allâh intends only to chastise them therewith in this ‘worldly life’; and that their souls may depart while they are faithless.

falā tuʿ'jib'ka amwāluhum walā awlāduhum innamā yurīdu l-lahu liyuʿadhibahum bihā fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā watazhaqa anfusuhum wahum kāfirūn

وَیَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمِنكُمۡ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ یَفۡرَقُونَ ۝٥٦

And these ‘Hypocrites’ swear by Allâh (unto you, O’ Monotheistic Believers) that they are indeed of you; but actually they are not. Yet they are a people who fear (your outrage ).

wayaḥlifūna bil-lahi innahum laminkum wamā hum minkum walākinnahum qawmun yafraqūn

لَوۡ یَجِدُونَ مَلۡجَءًا أَوۡ مَغَـٰرَ ٰتٍ أَوۡ مُدَّخَلࣰا لَّوَلَّوۡا۟ إِلَیۡهِ وَهُمۡ یَجۡمَحُونَ ۝٥٧

If they could find a place of refuge, or caves, or a place of concealment, they would definitely turn towards it in headlong haste.

law yajidūna malja-an aw maghārātin aw muddakhalan lawallaw ilayhi wahum yajmaḥūn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَلۡمِزُكَ فِی ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ فَإِنۡ أُعۡطُوا۟ مِنۡهَا رَضُوا۟ وَإِن لَّمۡ یُعۡطَوۡا۟ مِنۡهَاۤ إِذَا هُمۡ یَسۡخَطُونَ ۝٥٨

And among them are men who criticizes you in the matter of ( distribution of) the alms. Yet if they receive part thereof, they are well- pleased but if they receive not a part thereof, behold, they are outraged.

wamin'hum man yalmizuka fī l-ṣadaqāti fa-in uʿ'ṭū min'hā raḍū wa-in lam yuʿ'ṭaw min'hā idhā hum yaskhaṭūn

وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ رَضُوا۟ مَاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَقَالُوا۟ حَسۡبُنَا ٱللَّهُ سَیُؤۡتِینَا ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَرَسُولُهُۥۤ إِنَّاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ رَ ٰغِبُونَ ۝٥٩

It would have been more commendable if they had been satisfied with what Allâh and His Messenger gave them, and had said: " Sufficient is Allâh to us. Allâh will give to us of His Abundance, and so will His Prophet also. Indeed, to Allâh do we make our invocations.”

walaw annahum raḍū mā ātāhumu l-lahu warasūluhu waqālū ḥasbunā l-lahu sayu'tīnā l-lahu min faḍlihi warasūluhu innā ilā l-lahi rāghibūn

8 The Hypocrites

۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلۡفُقَرَاۤءِ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ وَٱلۡعَـٰمِلِینَ عَلَیۡهَا وَٱلۡمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَفِی ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلۡغَـٰرِمِینَ وَفِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِۖ فَرِیضَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٦٠

Alms are only for the poor and the needy, for those who are employed to be in charge (of collecting and distributing the alms), for those whose hearts are reconciled (to truth), for the redemption of captives, for those who are in debt (and insolvent), for (serving) the cause of Allâh, for the hopeless wayfarer. This is an ordinance from God. Lo! Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

innamā l-ṣadaqātu lil'fuqarāi wal-masākīni wal-ʿāmilīna ʿalayhā wal-mu-alafati qulūbuhum wafī l-riqābi wal-ghārimīna wafī sabīli l-lahi wa-ib'ni l-sabīli farīḍatan mina l-lahi wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

وَمِنۡهُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡذُونَ ٱلنَّبِیَّ وَیَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنࣱۚ قُلۡ أُذُنُ خَیۡرࣲ لَّكُمۡ یُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَیُؤۡمِنُ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَرَحۡمَةࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمۡۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡذُونَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٦١

Among them are men who offend the ‘Prophet’, and say: “He is (all) ear.” Say: “"He listens to what is best for you:. He believes in Allâh, and places his trust in the ‘Monotheistic Believers’, and is a mercy to those of you who adhere firmly to Islamic Monotheism,” But those who offended the Messenger of Allâh will have an extremely painful punishment.

wamin'humu alladhīna yu'dhūna l-nabiya wayaqūlūna huwa udhunun qul udhunu khayrin lakum yu'minu bil-lahi wayu'minu lil'mu'minīna waraḥmatun lilladhīna āmanū minkum wa-alladhīna yu'dhūna rasūla l-lahi lahum ʿadhābun alīmu

یَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمۡ لِیُرۡضُوكُمۡ وَٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥۤ أَحَقُّ أَن یُرۡضُوهُ إِن كَانُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٢

They swear to you by Allâh in order to please you. But it is more adequate that they should please Allâh and His Messenger, if they are (truly) ‘Monotheistic Believers’.

yaḥlifūna bil-lahi lakum liyur'ḍūkum wal-lahu warasūluhu aḥaqqu an yur'ḍūhu in kānū mu'minīn

أَلَمۡ یَعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُۥ مَن یُحَادِدِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَأَنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدࣰا فِیهَاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡخِزۡیُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٣

Do they not know that for him who opposes Allâh and His ‘Messenger’, is the Fire of Hell?- wherein he will dwell. That is the supreme disgrace.

alam yaʿlamū annahu man yuḥādidi l-laha warasūlahu fa-anna lahu nāra jahannama khālidan fīhā dhālika l-khiz'yu l-ʿaẓīm

یَحۡذَرُ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ سُورَةࣱ تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡۚ قُلِ ٱسۡتَهۡزِءُوۤا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡرِجࣱ مَّا تَحۡذَرُونَ ۝٦٤

Some of the ‘Hypocrites’ (only pretend to) fear a Sūrat might be sent down to the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ against them, in which the secrets of their hearts will be laid bare. (O’ Muhammad), say unto them: “Scoff as much as you can. But verily Allâh will bring to light what you (simply pretend to) fear.”

yaḥdharu l-munāfiqūna an tunazzala ʿalayhim sūratun tunabbi-uhum bimā fī qulūbihim quli is'tahziū inna l-laha mukh'rijun mā taḥdharūn

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُمۡ لَیَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلۡعَبُۚ قُلۡ أَبِٱللَّهِ وَءَایَـٰتِهِۦ وَرَسُولِهِۦ كُنتُمۡ تَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦٥

If it happens that you question them, they will say, "We were only talking idly and playing.” Say, “Were you then mocking at Allâh and His signs, and His Messenger?”

wala-in sa-altahum layaqūlunna innamā kunnā nakhūḍu wanalʿabu qul abil-lahi waāyātihi warasūlihi kuntum tastahziūn

لَا تَعۡتَذِرُوا۟ قَدۡ كَفَرۡتُم بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِكُمۡۚ إِن نَّعۡفُ عَن طَاۤىِٕفَةࣲ مِّنكُمۡ نُعَذِّبۡ طَاۤىِٕفَةَۢ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ مُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٦٦

Make no excuses. You have indeed renounced your faith after embracing it. If We forgive a party of you, We will chastise others among you, for that they were ungodly sinners.

lā taʿtadhirū qad kafartum baʿda īmānikum in naʿfu ʿan ṭāifatin minkum nuʿadhib ṭāifatan bi-annahum kānū muj'rimīn

9 The Hypocrites

ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعۡضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡضࣲۚ یَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَیَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَیَقۡبِضُونَ أَیۡدِیَهُمۡۚ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِیَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ ۝٦٧

The ‘Hypocrites’, men and women, proceed one from another. They command that which is evil, forbid that which is righteousness, and close their hands (from giving alms). They have forgotten Allâh; therefore, He has forgotten them. Verily the ‘Hypocrites’ are sons of disobedience.

al-munāfiqūna wal-munāfiqātu baʿḍuhum min baʿḍin yamurūna bil-munkari wayanhawna ʿani l-maʿrūfi wayaqbiḍūna aydiyahum nasū l-laha fanasiyahum inna l-munāfiqīna humu l-fāsiqūn

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ وَٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ وَٱلۡكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ هِیَ حَسۡبُهُمۡۚ وَلَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّقِیمࣱ ۝٦٨

Allâh has promised the ‘Hypocrites’, men and women, and the faithless people, the fire of ‘Gehenna’. They will abide therein. Sufficient is it for them. Allâh has cursed them, and for them is a permanent torment.

waʿada l-lahu l-munāfiqīna wal-munāfiqāti wal-kufāra nāra jahannama khālidīna fīhā hiya ḥasbuhum walaʿanahumu l-lahu walahum ʿadhābun muqīmu

كَٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ كَانُوۤا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمۡ قُوَّةࣰ وَأَكۡثَرَ أَمۡوَ ٰلࣰا وَأَوۡلَـٰدࣰا فَٱسۡتَمۡتَعُوا۟ بِخَلَـٰقِهِمۡ فَٱسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُم بِخَلَـٰقِكُمۡ كَمَا ٱسۡتَمۡتَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِكُم بِخَلَـٰقِهِمۡ وَخُضۡتُمۡ كَٱلَّذِی خَاضُوۤا۟ۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حَبِطَتۡ أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٦٩

As the ones who have been before you (- O’ Quraysh Tribe of Mecca) were mightier than you in power, and more abundant in wealth and children. They had enjoyed their portion awhile, so enjoy your portion awhile as those before you; thus, have you enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion. You excessively indulge in vain discourses, like those wherein they indulge. The works of these men are null and void both in this ‘worldly life’, and in the ‘Hereafter’. Such are they who are doomed to eternal perdition.

ka-alladhīna min qablikum kānū ashadda minkum quwwatan wa-akthara amwālan wa-awlādan fa-is'tamtaʿū bikhalāqihim fa-is'tamtaʿtum bikhalāqikum kamā is'tamtaʿa alladhīna min qablikum bikhalāqihim wakhuḍ'tum ka-alladhī khāḍū ulāika ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum fī l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wa-ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

أَلَمۡ یَأۡتِهِمۡ نَبَأُ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ قَوۡمِ نُوحࣲ وَعَادࣲ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوۡمِ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَأَصۡحَـٰبِ مَدۡیَنَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَـٰتِۚ أَتَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِۖ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیَظۡلِمَهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٧٠

Has there not reached them the anecdote of those before them? The people of ‘Noah’, ‘A'ad’, ‘Thamūd’, the folk of ‘Abraham’, the dwellers of ‘Madyan’ and the towns overthrown. To them came their ‘Messengers’ of Allâh with the full knowledge of the Truth. Thus, it was not Allâh Who wronged them, but they used to wrong their own selves.

alam yatihim naba-u alladhīna min qablihim qawmi nūḥin waʿādin wathamūda waqawmi ib'rāhīma wa-aṣḥābi madyana wal-mu'tafikāti atathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti famā kāna l-lahu liyaẓlimahum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتُ بَعۡضُهُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءُ بَعۡضࣲۚ یَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَیَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَیُقِیمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَیُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَیُطِیعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۤۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ سَیَرۡحَمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٧١

The ‘Monotheistic Believers’ (of the unfeigned faith ), both men and women, are protectors one of another. They enjoin right conduct, forbid indecency, establish the regular prayer, give Zakāt (i.e. the prescribed purifying alms), and obey Allâh and His Messenger. Consequently, Allâh will deliver them from all the consequences of their sins. Indeed, Allâh is All- Mighty, All-Wise.

wal-mu'minūna wal-mu'minātu baʿḍuhum awliyāu baʿḍin yamurūna bil-maʿrūfi wayanhawna ʿani l-munkari wayuqīmūna l-ṣalata wayu'tūna l-zakata wayuṭīʿūna l-laha warasūlahu ulāika sayarḥamuhumu l-lahu inna l-laha ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنَ طَیِّبَةࣰ فِی جَنَّـٰتِ عَدۡنࣲۚ وَرِضۡوَ ٰنࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ أَكۡبَرُۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٧٢

Allâh has promised to the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ (of unfeigned faith ), both men and women, gardens through which rivers flow, therein to abide, and excellent mansions in the gardens of perpetual abode. But the greatest of all is the graceful pleasure of Allâh. This is most ultimate success and the supreme one.

waʿada l-lahu l-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wamasākina ṭayyibatan fī jannāti ʿadnin wariḍ'wānun mina l-lahi akbaru dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

10 The Hypocrites

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ جَـٰهِدِ ٱلۡكُفَّارَ وَٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ وَٱغۡلُظۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝٧٣

.(9:73) O’ ‘Prophet’, strive hard against the ‘Faithless’ people and the ‘Hypocrites’, and be harsh on them . Their abode is ‘Gehenna’. Dreadful is the definitive course.!

yāayyuhā l-nabiyu jāhidi l-kufāra wal-munāfiqīna wa-ugh'luẓ ʿalayhim wamawāhum jahannamu wabi'sa l-maṣīr

یَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَلَقَدۡ قَالُوا۟ كَلِمَةَ ٱلۡكُفۡرِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بَعۡدَ إِسۡلَـٰمِهِمۡ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِمَا لَمۡ یَنَالُوا۟ۚ وَمَا نَقَمُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ أَنۡ أَغۡنَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦۚ فَإِن یَتُوبُوا۟ یَكُ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۡۖ وَإِن یَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ یُعَذِّبۡهُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِیمࣰا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ وَمَا لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِن وَلِیࣲّ وَلَا نَصِیرࣲ ۝٧٤

They (the ‘Hypocrites’) swear by Allâh that they said nothing (evil against the ‘Prophet’ or the ‘Monotheistic Believers’). Yet they really spoke the word of blasphemy, and fell into disbelief after embracing Islam. They devised a plot which they were unable to carry out. And they were malevolent toward (‘Monotheistic Believers’) for no other reason but that Allâh and His ‘Messenger’ had enriched them out of His bounty, If they repent, it will be better for them; but if they relapse, then Allâh will chastise them with an extremely painful torment in this ‘worldly life’ and in the ‘Hereafter’. And they shall find neither a protector nor a helper on the earth.

yaḥlifūna bil-lahi mā qālū walaqad qālū kalimata l-kuf'ri wakafarū baʿda is'lāmihim wahammū bimā lam yanālū wamā naqamū illā an aghnāhumu l-lahu warasūluhu min faḍlihi fa-in yatūbū yaku khayran lahum wa-in yatawallaw yuʿadhib'humu l-lahu ʿadhāban alīman fī l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wamā lahum fī l-arḍi min waliyyin walā naṣīri

۞ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ عَـٰهَدَ ٱللَّهَ لَىِٕنۡ ءَاتَىٰنَا مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٧٥

Among them are men who made a covenant with Allâh, saying: “indeed, if it happens that He bestowed upon us of His abundance, we would definitely give alms, and would definitely be of the righteous people.”

wamin'hum man ʿāhada l-laha la-in ātānā min faḍlihi lanaṣṣaddaqanna walanakūnanna mina l-ṣāliḥīn

فَلَمَّاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُم مِّن فَضۡلِهِۦ بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٧٦

Yet when He had given to them of His abundance, they became niggardly thereof, and turned away from giving alms in a repulsive manner.

falammā ātāhum min faḍlihi bakhilū bihi watawallaw wahum muʿ'riḍūn

فَأَعۡقَبَهُمۡ نِفَاقࣰا فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یَلۡقَوۡنَهُۥ بِمَاۤ أَخۡلَفُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡذِبُونَ ۝٧٧

So as a consequence, Allâh caused hypocrisy to flourish in their hearts, until the day whereon they will meet Him, because they broke their promise with Allâh, and because they used to contrive lies.

fa-aʿqabahum nifāqan fī qulūbihim ilā yawmi yalqawnahu bimā akhlafū l-laha mā waʿadūhu wabimā kānū yakdhibūn

أَلَمۡ یَعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ سِرَّهُمۡ وَنَجۡوَىٰهُمۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلۡغُیُوبِ ۝٧٨

Do they not realize that Allâh knows their secret and whatever they conspire together, and that Allâh is the All-Knowing of the unseen.

alam yaʿlamū anna l-laha yaʿlamu sirrahum wanajwāhum wa-anna l-laha ʿallāmu l-ghuyūb

ٱلَّذِینَ یَلۡمِزُونَ ٱلۡمُطَّوِّعِینَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ فِی ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهۡدَهُمۡ فَیَسۡخَرُونَ مِنۡهُمۡ سَخِرَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۡهُمۡ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمٌ ۝٧٩

Those who taunt the (generous) Believers because of giving alms willingly and those who find nothing to give except what is available to them , and poke fun at them; Allâh will pay them back their scoffing, and they will be subjected to an extremely painful torment.

alladhīna yalmizūna l-muṭawiʿīna mina l-mu'minīna fī l-ṣadaqāti wa-alladhīna lā yajidūna illā juh'dahum fayaskharūna min'hum sakhira l-lahu min'hum walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

ٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ أَوۡ لَا تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ إِن تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ سَبۡعِینَ مَرَّةࣰ فَلَن یَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٨٠

(It makes no difference to them) whether or not you, (O’ Muhammad), ask forgiveness for them (-the ‘Hypocrites’). Even If you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allâh will not forgive them. That is because they keep falling into disbelief in Allâh and His Messenger. Allâh guides not the sons of disobedience.

is'taghfir lahum aw lā tastaghfir lahum in tastaghfir lahum sabʿīna marratan falan yaghfira l-lahu lahum dhālika bi-annahum kafarū bil-lahi warasūlihi wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīn

11 The Hypocrites

فَرِحَ ٱلۡمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقۡعَدِهِمۡ خِلَـٰفَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَرِهُوۤا۟ أَن یُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِهِمۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَنفِرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡحَرِّۗ قُلۡ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرࣰّاۚ لَّوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٨١

Those who were left behind (in the time the ‘Expedition of Tabūk’) were delighted to stay behind the ‘Messenger of Allâh’, for they were averse to striving with their wealth and their lives in (serving) the cause of Allâh. And they said, "Go not forth in the heat." Say (O’ ‘Muhammad’): “The fire of ‘Gehenna’ is much more severe in heat," if they were not spiritually dead and blind people, ( they would have realized that).

fariḥa l-mukhalafūna bimaqʿadihim khilāfa rasūli l-lahi wakarihū an yujāhidū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim fī sabīli l-lahi waqālū lā tanfirū fī l-ḥari qul nāru jahannama ashaddu ḥarran law kānū yafqahūn

فَلۡیَضۡحَكُوا۟ قَلِیلࣰا وَلۡیَبۡكُوا۟ كَثِیرࣰا جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٨٢

Let them laugh a little: much will they weep: a recompense for that which they used to earn.

falyaḍḥakū qalīlan walyabkū kathīran jazāan bimā kānū yaksibūn

فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ فَٱسۡتَءۡذَنُوكَ لِلۡخُرُوجِ فَقُل لَّن تَخۡرُجُوا۟ مَعِیَ أَبَدࣰا وَلَن تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟ مَعِیَ عَدُوًّاۖ إِنَّكُمۡ رَضِیتُم بِٱلۡقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةࣲ فَٱقۡعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِفِینَ ۝٨٣

If it happens that Allâh brings you back (safe) from ( the ‘Expedition of Tabūk’), and you meet a party of them , ( the ‘Hypocrites’) , and they ask leave of you to go forth (with you on some other campaign), Say, "Never shall you go forth with me, nor shall you fight an enemy with me. You preferred to sit inactive on the first occasion, therefore, stay with those who lag behind."

fa-in rajaʿaka l-lahu ilā ṭāifatin min'hum fa-is'tadhanūka lil'khurūji faqul lan takhrujū maʿiya abadan walan tuqātilū maʿiya ʿaduwwan innakum raḍītum bil-quʿūdi awwala marratin fa-uq'ʿudū maʿa l-khālifīn

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰۤ أَحَدࣲ مِّنۡهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدࣰا وَلَا تَقُمۡ عَلَىٰ قَبۡرِهِۦۤۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فَـٰسِقُونَ ۝٨٤

And never will you, (O’ Muhammad ), offer prayer for any of them who dies, neither will you stand by his tomb. Verily, they disbelieved in Allâh and His ‘Messenger’, and died while they were walking in the path of disobedience.

walā tuṣalli ʿalā aḥadin min'hum māta abadan walā taqum ʿalā qabrihi innahum kafarū bil-lahi warasūlihi wamātū wahum fāsiqūn

وَلَا تُعۡجِبۡكَ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَأَوۡلَـٰدُهُمۡۚ إِنَّمَا یُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن یُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَتَزۡهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٨٥

Let not therefore their wealth, or their children impress you. Verily Allâh intends only to chastise them therewith in this ‘worldly life’; and that their souls depart while they are still ‘Faithless’.

walā tuʿ'jib'ka amwāluhum wa-awlāduhum innamā yurīdu l-lahu an yuʿadhibahum bihā fī l-dun'yā watazhaqa anfusuhum wahum kāfirūn

وَإِذَاۤ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةٌ أَنۡ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ ٱسۡتَءۡذَنَكَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلطَّوۡلِ مِنۡهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ ذَرۡنَا نَكُن مَّعَ ٱلۡقَـٰعِدِینَ ۝٨٦

Whenever a Sūrat (i.e. chapter from the ’Qur’ān’) is revealed, wherein it is said: " Place your Faith in Allâh, and strive hard and fight (bravely) with His Messenger." The wealthy among them ask your leave to exempt them (from fighting), saying: "Leave us with those who are going to stay behind."

wa-idhā unzilat sūratun an āminū bil-lahi wajāhidū maʿa rasūlihi is'tadhanaka ulū l-ṭawli min'hum waqālū dharnā nakun maʿa l-qāʿidīn

رَضُوا۟ بِأَن یَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلۡخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٨٧

They prefer to be with those who remain behind (at homes): a seal has been set upon their hearts and so they become spiritually dead and blind people.

raḍū bi-an yakūnū maʿa l-khawālifi waṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yafqahūn

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِهِمۡۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡخَیۡرَ ٰتُۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٨٨

But the ‘Messenger’, and those who attain to Faith in Allah with him, strive hard and fight (bravely) with their wealth and their lives. Such are they for whom are the good things. Such are they who ultimately achieve a blissful life/ or gain eternal salvation.

lākini l-rasūlu wa-alladhīna āmanū maʿahu jāhadū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim wa-ulāika lahumu l-khayrātu wa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٨٩

Allâh has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein. This is the most ultimate success and the supreme one.

aʿadda l-lahu lahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā dhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

12 The Hypocrites

وَجَاۤءَ ٱلۡمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَعۡرَابِ لِیُؤۡذَنَ لَهُمۡ وَقَعَدَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَبُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ سَیُصِیبُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٩٠

And there were, among the ‘Bedouin Arabs’, men who had an excuse, came asking your permission to exempt them (from fighting), whereas those who lied to Allâh and His ‘Messenger’ stayed at home. An extremely painful torment will afflict those of them who excessively indulge in disbelief ( in Allâh).

wajāa l-muʿadhirūna mina l-aʿrābi liyu'dhana lahum waqaʿada alladhīna kadhabū l-laha warasūlahu sayuṣību alladhīna kafarū min'hum ʿadhābun alīmu

لَّیۡسَ عَلَى ٱلضُّعَفَاۤءِ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلۡمَرۡضَىٰ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَجِدُونَ مَا یُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۚ مَا عَلَى ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ مِن سَبِیلࣲۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٩١

There is no blame on those who are weak, or those who are afflicted with sickness, or those who have nothing to contribute ( to the cause) if they are sincere (in faith and duty) to Allâh and His ‘Messenger’. There is no reason to lay blame on those who pursue righteousness - Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful-

laysa ʿalā l-ḍuʿafāi walā ʿalā l-marḍā walā ʿalā alladhīna lā yajidūna mā yunfiqūna ḥarajun idhā naṣaḥū lillahi warasūlihi mā ʿalā l-muḥ'sinīna min sabīlin wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmu

وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ إِذَا مَاۤ أَتَوۡكَ لِتَحۡمِلَهُمۡ قُلۡتَ لَاۤ أَجِدُ مَاۤ أَحۡمِلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ تَوَلَّوا۟ وَّأَعۡیُنُهُمۡ تَفِیضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمۡعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا یَجِدُوا۟ مَا یُنفِقُونَ ۝٩٢

Neither against the ones who, when they came to you, for you to mount them, you said unto them: "I do not find anything whereon to mount you." They turned away, their eyes overflowing with tears of sorrow, because they could not find anything to expend on this cause.

walā ʿalā alladhīna idhā mā atawka litaḥmilahum qul'ta lā ajidu mā aḥmilukum ʿalayhi tawallaw wa-aʿyunuhum tafīḍu mina l-damʿi ḥazanan allā yajidū mā yunfiqūn

۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلسَّبِیلُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ یَسۡتَءۡذِنُونَكَ وَهُمۡ أَغۡنِیَاۤءُۚ رَضُوا۟ بِأَن یَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلۡخَوَالِفِ وَطَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٩٣

But there is a solid reason to blame the rich ones who ask permission of you to sit at home, They are well-pleased to remain with those who are left behind: Allah has set a seal upon their hearts so that they may become spiritually blind.

innamā l-sabīlu ʿalā alladhīna yastadhinūnaka wahum aghniyāu raḍū bi-an yakūnū maʿa l-khawālifi waṭabaʿa l-lahu ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yaʿlamūn

یَعۡتَذِرُونَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ إِذَا رَجَعۡتُمۡ إِلَیۡهِمۡۚ قُل لَّا تَعۡتَذِرُوا۟ لَن نُّؤۡمِنَ لَكُمۡ قَدۡ نَبَّأَنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنۡ أَخۡبَارِكُمۡۚ وَسَیَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمۡ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَیُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٤

They will make excuses to you when you return back to them. Say: “Make no excuse. We will by no means believe you. Allâh has made us aware of your behavior; and Allâh will observe your activities, and His ‘Messenger’ also. Consequently, you are (destined) to be brought back to the All-Knowing of the unseen and the seen. And He will notify you of what you used to do.”

yaʿtadhirūna ilaykum idhā rajaʿtum ilayhim qul lā taʿtadhirū lan nu'mina lakum qad nabba-anā l-lahu min akhbārikum wasayarā l-lahu ʿamalakum warasūluhu thumma turaddūna ilā ʿālimi l-ghaybi wal-shahādati fayunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

سَیَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمۡ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبۡتُمۡ إِلَیۡهِمۡ لِتُعۡرِضُوا۟ عَنۡهُمۡۖ فَأَعۡرِضُوا۟ عَنۡهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُمۡ رِجۡسࣱۖ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٩٥

They will swear to you by Allâh, when you return unto them, that you may leave them alone Thus, leave them alone. They are despicable people, and ‘Gehenna’ is their permanent home in recompense for what they were accustomed to do.

sayaḥlifūna bil-lahi lakum idhā inqalabtum ilayhim lituʿ'riḍū ʿanhum fa-aʿriḍū ʿanhum innahum rij'sun wamawāhum jahannamu jazāan bimā kānū yaksibūn

یَحۡلِفُونَ لَكُمۡ لِتَرۡضَوۡا۟ عَنۡهُمۡۖ فَإِن تَرۡضَوۡا۟ عَنۡهُمۡ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَرۡضَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٩٦

They will swear to you in order to make you feel happy and satisfied. But if you are well- pleased with them, (then you'll need to know that) Allâh is not well-pleased with the sons of disobedience.

yaḥlifūna lakum litarḍaw ʿanhum fa-in tarḍaw ʿanhum fa-inna l-laha lā yarḍā ʿani l-qawmi l-fāsiqīn

ٱلۡأَعۡرَابُ أَشَدُّ كُفۡرࣰا وَنِفَاقࣰا وَأَجۡدَرُ أَلَّا یَعۡلَمُوا۟ حُدُودَ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٩٧

(The impious among) the ‘Bedouin Arabs’ are more obstinate in their disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely to be ignorant of the ordinances of what Allâh has revealed unto His ‘Messenger’. Lo! Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

al-aʿrābu ashaddu kuf'ran wanifāqan wa-ajdaru allā yaʿlamū ḥudūda mā anzala l-lahu ʿalā rasūlihi wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

وَمِنَ ٱلۡأَعۡرَابِ مَن یَتَّخِذُ مَا یُنفِقُ مَغۡرَمࣰا وَیَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُ ٱلدَّوَاۤىِٕرَۚ عَلَیۡهِمۡ دَاۤىِٕرَةُ ٱلسَّوۡءِۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٩٨

Of the ‘Bedouin Arabs’ there is he who regards what he expends, (in the way of Allâh), as a penalty, and waits to see calamity befalling you. The evil turn of fortune will be theirs. Lo! Allâh is All-Hearer, All- Knowing.

wamina l-aʿrābi man yattakhidhu mā yunfiqu maghraman wayatarabbaṣu bikumu l-dawāira ʿalayhim dāiratu l-sawi wal-lahu samīʿun ʿalīmu

وَمِنَ ٱلۡأَعۡرَابِ مَن یُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَیَتَّخِذُ مَا یُنفِقُ قُرُبَـٰتٍ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَصَلَوَ ٰتِ ٱلرَّسُولِۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّهَا قُرۡبَةࣱ لَّهُمۡۚ سَیُدۡخِلُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِی رَحۡمَتِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٩٩

Of the ‘Bedouin Arabs’ (also) there is who believes in Allâh and in the ‘Last Day’, and regards that which he expends ( in serving the cause of Allâh) as a means of bringing him near to Allâh, and a method of obtaining the supplications of the ‘Messenger’. Indeed, they will bring them nearer to Allâh. And Allâh will admit them into His clemency. Indeed, Allâh is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.

wamina l-aʿrābi man yu'minu bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wayattakhidhu mā yunfiqu qurubātin ʿinda l-lahi waṣalawāti l-rasūli alā innahā qur'batun lahum sayud'khiluhumu l-lahu fī raḥmatihi inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

13 The Hypocrites

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهَـٰجِرِینَ وَٱلۡأَنصَارِ وَٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحۡسَـٰنࣲ رَّضِیَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی تَحۡتَهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝١٠٠

The first (to embrace Islam of) those who migrated (from ‘Mecca’ to ‘Medina’) and those who gave aid to them, and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith); Allâh is well-pleased with them, and they are well -pleased in him. Allâh has prepared for them ‘Gardens’ (in the eternal bliss) through which rivers flow; to dwell therein forever. This is the most ultimate success and the supreme one.

wal-sābiqūna l-awalūna mina l-muhājirīna wal-anṣāri wa-alladhīna ittabaʿūhum bi-iḥ'sānin raḍiya l-lahu ʿanhum waraḍū ʿanhu wa-aʿadda lahum jannātin tajrī taḥtahā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadan dhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

وَمِمَّنۡ حَوۡلَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَعۡرَابِ مُنَـٰفِقُونَۖ وَمِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ مَرَدُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنِّفَاقِ لَا تَعۡلَمُهُمۡۖ نَحۡنُ نَعۡلَمُهُمۡۚ سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَیۡنِ ثُمَّ یُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

Some of the ‘Bedouin Arabs’ who dwell round about you are ‘Hypocrites’. Of the inhabitants of ‘Madinah’, there are some who are accustomed to hypocrisy. You know them not, but We know them. We will definitely chastise them twice; afterwards will they be sent to an extremely dreadful torment.

wamimman ḥawlakum mina l-aʿrābi munāfiqūna wamin ahli l-madīnati maradū ʿalā l-nifāqi lā taʿlamuhum naḥnu naʿlamuhum sanuʿadhibuhum marratayni thumma yuraddūna ilā ʿadhābin ʿaẓīmi

وَءَاخَرُونَ ٱعۡتَرَفُوا۟ بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ خَلَطُوا۟ عَمَلࣰا صَـٰلِحࣰا وَءَاخَرَ سَیِّئًا عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن یَتُوبَ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١٠٢

There are others who have confessed their sins. They have mixed a righteous deed with another which is evil. Perhaps Allâh will turn unto them in forgiveness. Indeed, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

waākharūna iʿ'tarafū bidhunūbihim khalaṭū ʿamalan ṣāliḥan waākhara sayyi-an ʿasā l-lahu an yatūba ʿalayhim inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

خُذۡ مِنۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ صَدَقَةࣰ تُطَهِّرُهُمۡ وَتُزَكِّیهِم بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَیۡهِمۡۖ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنࣱ لَّهُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ ۝١٠٣

Take alms of their wealth, wherewith you may purify them and may make them prosperous, and pray for them. Lo! Your prayer is a relief for them. And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knowing.

khudh min amwālihim ṣadaqatan tuṭahhiruhum watuzakkīhim bihā waṣalli ʿalayhim inna ṣalataka sakanun lahum wal-lahu samīʿun ʿalīmu

أَلَمۡ یَعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ یَقۡبَلُ ٱلتَّوۡبَةَ عَنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ وَیَأۡخُذُ ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

Are they unaware that Allâh accepts repentance from his servants, and accepts alms, and that Allâh is the One who forgives and accepts repentance, the Most Merciful?

alam yaʿlamū anna l-laha huwa yaqbalu l-tawbata ʿan ʿibādihi wayakhudhu l-ṣadaqāti wa-anna l-laha huwa l-tawābu l-raḥīm

وَقُلِ ٱعۡمَلُوا۟ فَسَیَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمۡ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَیُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٠٥

Say: “Carry out your tasks!” Allâh will behold your performance, and (so will) His ‘Messenger’ and the ‘Monotheistic Believers’. Consequently, you are (destined) to be brought back to the All-Knowing of the unseen and the seen. And He will notify you of what you used to do.”

waquli iʿ'malū fasayarā l-lahu ʿamalakum warasūluhu wal-mu'minūna wasaturaddūna ilā ʿālimi l-ghaybi wal-shahādati fayunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

وَءَاخَرُونَ مُرۡجَوۡنَ لِأَمۡرِ ٱللَّهِ إِمَّا یُعَذِّبُهُمۡ وَإِمَّا یَتُوبُ عَلَیۡهِمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝١٠٦

There are others who wait with suspense the decree of Allâh, whether He will chastise them, or turn in mercy to them. Lo! Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

waākharūna mur'jawna li-amri l-lahi immā yuʿadhibuhum wa-immā yatūbu ʿalayhim wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

وَٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مَسۡجِدࣰا ضِرَارࣰا وَكُفۡرࣰا وَتَفۡرِیقَۢا بَیۡنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَإِرۡصَادࣰا لِّمَنۡ حَارَبَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ مِن قَبۡلُۚ وَلَیَحۡلِفُنَّ إِنۡ أَرَدۡنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۖ وَٱللَّهُ یَشۡهَدُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٠٧

There are some who have built a Mosque to cause harm (to Islam) and to promote disbelief and in order to break up the unity of the ‘Monotheistic Believers’, and to provide a safe haven for those who made war against Allâh and His Messenger aforetime. And they will certainly swear (saying), `We meant nothing but good (in building the mosque).' But Allâh bears witness that they are certainly liars.

wa-alladhīna ittakhadhū masjidan ḍirāran wakuf'ran watafrīqan bayna l-mu'minīna wa-ir'ṣādan liman ḥāraba l-laha warasūlahu min qablu walayaḥlifunna in aradnā illā l-ḥus'nā wal-lahu yashhadu innahum lakādhibūn

لَا تَقُمۡ فِیهِ أَبَدࣰاۚ لَّمَسۡجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ مِنۡ أَوَّلِ یَوۡمٍ أَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِیهِۚ فِیهِ رِجَالࣱ یُحِبُّونَ أَن یَتَطَهَّرُوا۟ۚ وَٱللَّهُ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُطَّهِّرِینَ ۝١٠٨

Stand not up to pray therein. Certainly there is a Mosque founded on unfeigned piety and obedience from the first day of its building. It is more just that you stand up to pray therein. In it are men who love to be purified (from disbelief & polytheism); and Allâh demonstrates his own love for those who desire to be purified.

lā taqum fīhi abadan lamasjidun ussisa ʿalā l-taqwā min awwali yawmin aḥaqqu an taqūma fīhi fīhi rijālun yuḥibbūna an yataṭahharū wal-lahu yuḥibbu l-muṭahirīn

أَفَمَنۡ أَسَّسَ بُنۡیَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ تَقۡوَىٰ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضۡوَ ٰنٍ خَیۡرٌ أَم مَّنۡ أَسَّسَ بُنۡیَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارࣲ فَٱنۡهَارَ بِهِۦ فِی نَارِ جَهَنَّمَۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠٩

Is he who establishes his building on the basis of reverence for Allâh and His goodly acceptance better or he who establishes his building on the edge of a crumbling bank that has tumbled with him into the fire of ‘Gehenna’? Allâh does not give divine guidance to a people who are grossly unfair and morally wrong.

afaman assasa bun'yānahu ʿalā taqwā mina l-lahi wariḍ'wānin khayrun am man assasa bun'yānahu ʿalā shafā jurufin hārin fa-in'hāra bihi fī nāri jahannama wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

لَا یَزَالُ بُنۡیَـٰنُهُمُ ٱلَّذِی بَنَوۡا۟ رِیبَةࣰ فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَقَطَّعَ قُلُوبُهُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمٌ ۝١١٠

The building which they have built will continue to be a source of anxiety in their hearts, unless their hearts will be torn into pieces. Lo! Allâh is All- Knowing, All-Wise.

lā yazālu bun'yānuhumu alladhī banaw rībatan fī qulūbihim illā an taqaṭṭaʿa qulūbuhum wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

14 The Faithful

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱشۡتَرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَأَمۡوَ ٰلَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلۡجَنَّةَۚ یُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَیَقۡتُلُونَ وَیُقۡتَلُونَۖ وَعۡدًا عَلَیۡهِ حَقࣰّا فِی ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةِ وَٱلۡإِنجِیلِ وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِۚ وَمَنۡ أَوۡفَىٰ بِعَهۡدِهِۦ مِنَ ٱللَّهِۚ فَٱسۡتَبۡشِرُوا۟ بِبَیۡعِكُمُ ٱلَّذِی بَایَعۡتُم بِهِۦۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝١١١

Verily, Allâh has purchased of the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ their lives and their properties, promising them the enjoyment of ‘Al- Jannah’, on condition that they fight for (serving) the cause of Allâh. Whether they slay or be slain , it is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the ‘Torah’, the ‘Gospel’, and the ‘Qur’ān’. Who is more faithful to his covenant than Allâh? Rejoice therefore in the contract which you have made. This is most ultimate success and the supreme one.

inna l-laha ish'tarā mina l-mu'minīna anfusahum wa-amwālahum bi-anna lahumu l-janata yuqātilūna fī sabīli l-lahi fayaqtulūna wayuq'talūna waʿdan ʿalayhi ḥaqqan fī l-tawrāti wal-injīli wal-qur'āni waman awfā biʿahdihi mina l-lahi fa-is'tabshirū bibayʿikumu alladhī bāyaʿtum bihi wadhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

ٱلتَّـٰۤىِٕبُونَ ٱلۡعَـٰبِدُونَ ٱلۡحَـٰمِدُونَ ٱلسَّـٰۤىِٕحُونَ ٱلرَّ ٰكِعُونَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدُونَ ٱلۡءَامِرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَٱلنَّاهُونَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱلۡحَـٰفِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ ٱللَّهِۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٢

(The Monotheistic Believers who will ultimately achieve eternal salvation ) are the ones who turn in repentance, who worship (& venerate Allâh Alone), who celebrate His praise and declare His indefinite glory, who go out (in serving the cause of Allâh), who bow down (in prayer), who prostrate themselves (in prayer), who enjoin right conduct, who forbid indecency, and who observe the limits (set by) Allâh. (O’ Muhammad), give the joyful news to the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ (of unfeigned faith).

al-tāibūna l-ʿābidūna l-ḥāmidūna l-sāiḥūna l-rākiʿūna l-sājidūna l-āmirūna bil-maʿrūfi wal-nāhūna ʿani l-munkari wal-ḥāfiẓūna liḥudūdi l-lahi wabashiri l-mu'minīn

مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِیِّ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ أَن یَسۡتَغۡفِرُوا۟ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ وَلَوۡ كَانُوۤا۟ أُو۟لِی قُرۡبَىٰ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَیَّنَ لَهُمۡ أَنَّهُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝١١٣

It is not appropriate for the ‘Prophet’ or for the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ to implore forgiveness for the the ‘Polytheists’, even though they be of kin, after it has become (appallingly) obvious to them that they are the ‘Denizens of Gehenna’.

mā kāna lilnnabiyyi wa-alladhīna āmanū an yastaghfirū lil'mush'rikīna walaw kānū ulī qur'bā min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahum annahum aṣḥābu l-jaḥīm

وَمَا كَانَ ٱسۡتِغۡفَارُ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ لِأَبِیهِ إِلَّا عَن مَّوۡعِدَةࣲ وَعَدَهَاۤ إِیَّاهُ فَلَمَّا تَبَیَّنَ لَهُۥۤ أَنَّهُۥ عَدُوࣱّ لِّلَّهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنۡهُۚ إِنَّ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ لَأَوَّ ٰهٌ حَلِیمࣱ ۝١١٤

The appeal of forgiveness of ‘Abraham’ for his father was only because a promise which he had promised to him. But when it became obvious to ‘Abraham’ that his father was an enemy to Allâh , he declared himself clear of him. Verily ‘Abraham’ was, as a matter of fact, compassionate and forbearing.

wamā kāna is'tigh'fāru ib'rāhīma li-abīhi illā ʿan mawʿidatin waʿadahā iyyāhu falammā tabayyana lahu annahu ʿaduwwun lillahi tabarra-a min'hu inna ib'rāhīma la-awwāhun ḥalīmu

وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیُضِلَّ قَوۡمَۢا بَعۡدَ إِذۡ هَدَىٰهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ یُبَیِّنَ لَهُم مَّا یَتَّقُونَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمٌ ۝١١٥

And Allâh would never lead a people astray after He had guided them until He had made apparent to them what they should avoid. Indeed, Allâh is the All Knowing of everything.

wamā kāna l-lahu liyuḍilla qawman baʿda idh hadāhum ḥattā yubayyina lahum mā yattaqūna inna l-laha bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُۚ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِیࣲّ وَلَا نَصِیرࣲ ۝١١٦

Absolutely, unto Allâh belongs the (absolute) sovereignty of heavens and of the earth. He gives life, and He causes death. And you have, apart from Allâh, no guardian or helper.

inna l-laha lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi yuḥ'yī wayumītu wamā lakum min dūni l-lahi min waliyyin walā naṣīri

لَّقَد تَّابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِیِّ وَٱلۡمُهَـٰجِرِینَ وَٱلۡأَنصَارِ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ فِی سَاعَةِ ٱلۡعُسۡرَةِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا كَادَ یَزِیغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِیقࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِهِمۡ رَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١١٧

Verily, Allâh has turned with mercy to the ‘Prophet’, and to those who migrated (from ‘Mecca’ to ‘Madinah’) and the supporters (who gave aid to them) as they followed him in the hour of distress, after the hearts of a party of them had almost deviated (from the right direction). Again He turned unto them with mercy. Indeed, He was Most Kind and Most Merciful towards them.

laqad tāba l-lahu ʿalā l-nabiyi wal-muhājirīna wal-anṣāri alladhīna ittabaʿūhu fī sāʿati l-ʿus'rati min baʿdi mā kāda yazīghu qulūbu farīqin min'hum thumma tāba ʿalayhim innahu bihim raūfun raḥīmu

وَعَلَى ٱلثَّلَـٰثَةِ ٱلَّذِینَ خُلِّفُوا۟ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا ضَاقَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتۡ وَضَاقَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَنفُسُهُمۡ وَظَنُّوۤا۟ أَن لَّا مَلۡجَأَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّاۤ إِلَیۡهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ لِیَتُوبُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١١٨

(He turned in mercy also) to the three who were left behind, the earth with all its spaciousness was too strait for them , and their own selves became straitened for them, and they presumed that there was no refuge for them from Allâh save unto Him. Then turned He unto them in mercy so that they might repent to Him. Indeed, Allâh is the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

waʿalā l-thalāthati alladhīna khullifū ḥattā idhā ḍāqat ʿalayhimu l-arḍu bimā raḥubat waḍāqat ʿalayhim anfusuhum waẓannū an lā malja-a mina l-lahi illā ilayhi thumma tāba ʿalayhim liyatūbū inna l-laha huwa l-tawābu l-raḥīm

15 What Faithful should do

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١١٩

O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, act piously towards Allâh/ or show reverence and obedience to Allâh and be with those who are truthful.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū ittaqū l-laha wakūnū maʿa l-ṣādiqīn

مَا كَانَ لِأَهۡلِ ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ وَمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَعۡرَابِ أَن یَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ عَن رَّسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا یَرۡغَبُوا۟ بِأَنفُسِهِمۡ عَن نَّفۡسِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ لَا یُصِیبُهُمۡ ظَمَأࣱ وَلَا نَصَبࣱ وَلَا مَخۡمَصَةࣱ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا یَطَءُونَ مَوۡطِئࣰا یَغِیظُ ٱلۡكُفَّارَ وَلَا یَنَالُونَ مِنۡ عَدُوࣲّ نَّیۡلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عَمَلࣱ صَـٰلِحٌۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُضِیعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢٠

It is was not appropriate for the the inhabitants of ‘Madinah’, and the ‘Bedouin Arabs’ who dwell around them, to remain behind the ‘Messenger of Allâh’ (at the time of ‘Expedition to Tabûk’), or to prefer their own lives to his life: That is because they suffer neither thirst nor fatigue, nor hunger in (serving) the cause of Allâh, nor do they take any step to irritate the Faithless people , nor inflict any injury upon an enemy, but a good work is written down to them for the same. Indeed, Allâh will not let the reward of those whose Faith is placed in Him be lost / or go in vain.

mā kāna li-ahli l-madīnati waman ḥawlahum mina l-aʿrābi an yatakhallafū ʿan rasūli l-lahi walā yarghabū bi-anfusihim ʿan nafsihi dhālika bi-annahum lā yuṣībuhum ẓama-on walā naṣabun walā makhmaṣatun fī sabīli l-lahi walā yaṭaūna mawṭi-an yaghīẓu l-kufāra walā yanālūna min ʿaduwwin naylan illā kutiba lahum bihi ʿamalun ṣāliḥun inna l-laha lā yuḍīʿu ajra l-muḥ'sinīn

وَلَا یُنفِقُونَ نَفَقَةࣰ صَغِیرَةࣰ وَلَا كَبِیرَةࣰ وَلَا یَقۡطَعُونَ وَادِیًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمۡ لِیَجۡزِیَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَحۡسَنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢١

They contribute nothing useful for (serving) the cause of Allâh , either small or great, nor do they pass a valley, but it is written down to them, that Allâh may reward them with a recompense exceeding that which they used to do.

walā yunfiqūna nafaqatan ṣaghīratan walā kabīratan walā yaqṭaʿūna wādiyan illā kutiba lahum liyajziyahumu l-lahu aḥsana mā kānū yaʿmalūn

۞ وَمَا كَانَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ لِیَنفِرُوا۟ كَاۤفَّةࣰۚ فَلَوۡلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرۡقَةࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ لِّیَتَفَقَّهُوا۟ فِی ٱلدِّینِ وَلِیُنذِرُوا۟ قَوۡمَهُمۡ إِذَا رَجَعُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِمۡ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَحۡذَرُونَ ۝١٢٢

It is not appropriate for all ‘Monotheistic Believers’ to go forth to war all together. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth , that they (who are left behind) may gain sound knowledge in the system of faith and worship, and may admonish their people when they come back to them , that they may take heed to themselves.

wamā kāna l-mu'minūna liyanfirū kāffatan falawlā nafara min kulli fir'qatin min'hum ṭāifatun liyatafaqqahū fī l-dīni waliyundhirū qawmahum idhā rajaʿū ilayhim laʿallahum yaḥdharūn

16 Prophet's Great Anxiety

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ یَلُونَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡكُفَّارِ وَلۡیَجِدُوا۟ فِیكُمۡ غِلۡظَةࣰۚ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٢٣

O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, make a declaration of war against such of the faithless people as are near you; and let them find stringency in you; and know that Allâh is with the ‘Pious’ ( who show reverence and obedience to Allâh).

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū qātilū alladhīna yalūnakum mina l-kufāri walyajidū fīkum ghil'ẓatan wa-iʿ'lamū anna l-laha maʿa l-mutaqīn

وَإِذَا مَاۤ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةࣱ فَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَقُولُ أَیُّكُمۡ زَادَتۡهُ هَـٰذِهِۦۤ إِیمَـٰنࣰاۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَزَادَتۡهُمۡ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَهُمۡ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ۝١٢٤

Whenever a Sūrat is revealed, there are some of them who say: “"Which of you has had His Faith been invigorated by it?" As for those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, It indeed invigorates their Faith; and they do rejoice.

wa-idhā mā unzilat sūratun famin'hum man yaqūlu ayyukum zādathu hādhihi īmānan fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū fazādathum īmānan wahum yastabshirūn

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ فَزَادَتۡهُمۡ رِجۡسًا إِلَىٰ رِجۡسِهِمۡ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝١٢٥

But as for those in whose hearts is an infirmity, It only adds filth to their filth. And they will die in their disbelief.

wa-ammā alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun fazādathum rij'san ilā rij'sihim wamātū wahum kāfirūn

أَوَ لَا یَرَوۡنَ أَنَّهُمۡ یُفۡتَنُونَ فِی كُلِّ عَامࣲ مَّرَّةً أَوۡ مَرَّتَیۡنِ ثُمَّ لَا یَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمۡ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝١٢٦

Do they not see that they are tempted every year once or twice? Yet they turn not in repentance, neither do they take heed.

awalā yarawna annahum yuf'tanūna fī kulli ʿāmin marratan aw marratayni thumma lā yatūbūna walā hum yadhakkarūn

وَإِذَا مَاۤ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةࣱ نَّظَرَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ هَلۡ یَرَىٰكُم مِّنۡ أَحَدࣲ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ۚ صَرَفَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝١٢٧

Whenever a Sūrat is revealed, they look at one another (and say): "Does any one see you?" Then do they turn aside. Allâh has turned away their hearts (from seeing the Truth) because they are spiritually dead and blind people.

wa-idhā mā unzilat sūratun naẓara baʿḍuhum ilā baʿḍin hal yarākum min aḥadin thumma inṣarafū ṣarafa l-lahu qulūbahum bi-annahum qawmun lā yafqahūn

لَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ عَزِیزٌ عَلَیۡهِ مَا عَنِتُّمۡ حَرِیصٌ عَلَیۡكُم بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ رَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٢٨

Verily there has come to you a ‘Messenger’, (-’Muhammad’), from among yourselves, an exceptional person. it grieves him to see you suffer. He is genuinely cares (about your welfare), kind and merciful towards the ‘Monotheistic Believers’.

laqad jāakum rasūlun min anfusikum ʿazīzun ʿalayhi mā ʿanittum ḥarīṣun ʿalaykum bil-mu'minīna raūfun raḥīmu

فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَقُلۡ حَسۡبِیَ ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ عَلَیۡهِ تَوَكَّلۡتُۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَرۡشِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝١٢٩

But if they take no heed, say (O’ Muhammad): "Allâh is sufficient for me. There is no God but He. I depend on Him with full trust. And He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne."

fa-in tawallaw faqul ḥasbiya l-lahu lā ilāha illā huwa ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wahuwa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīm
