40
إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَرِثُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَنۡ عَلَیۡهَا وَإِلَیۡنَا یُرۡجَعُونَ ٤٠
innā naḥnu narithu l-arḍa waman ʿalayhā wa-ilaynā yur'jaʿūn
It is We who will inherit the earth and all who are on it: they will all be returned to Us
41
وَٱذۡكُرۡ فِی ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّیقࣰا نَّبِیًّا ٤١
wa-udh'kur fī l-kitābi ib'rāhīma innahu kāna ṣiddīqan nabiyya
Mention too, in the Quran, the story of Abraham. He was a man of truth, a prophet
42
إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ یَـٰۤأَبَتِ لِمَ تَعۡبُدُ مَا لَا یَسۡمَعُ وَلَا یُبۡصِرُ وَلَا یُغۡنِی عَنكَ شَیۡءࣰا ٤٢
idh qāla li-abīhi yāabati lima taʿbudu mā lā yasmaʿu walā yub'ṣiru walā yugh'nī ʿanka shaya
He said to his father, ‘Father, why do you worship something that can neither hear nor see nor benefit you in any way
43
یَـٰۤأَبَتِ إِنِّی قَدۡ جَاۤءَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ مَا لَمۡ یَأۡتِكَ فَٱتَّبِعۡنِیۤ أَهۡدِكَ صِرَ ٰطࣰا سَوِیࣰّا ٤٣
yāabati innī qad jāanī mina l-ʿil'mi mā lam yatika fa-ittabiʿ'nī ahdika ṣirāṭan sawiyya
Father, knowledge that has not reached you has come to me, so follow me: I will guide you to an even path
44
یَـٰۤأَبَتِ لَا تَعۡبُدِ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنَۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنَ كَانَ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ عَصِیࣰّا ٤٤
yāabati lā taʿbudi l-shayṭāna inna l-shayṭāna kāna lilrraḥmāni ʿaṣiyya
Father, do not worship Satan- Satan has rebelled against the Lord of Mercy
45
یَـٰۤأَبَتِ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یَمَسَّكَ عَذَابࣱ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ وَلِیࣰّا ٤٥
yāabati innī akhāfu an yamassaka ʿadhābun mina l-raḥmāni fatakūna lilshayṭāni waliyya
Father, I fear that a punishment from the Lord of Mercy may afflict you and that you may become Satan’s companion [in Hell].’
46
قَالَ أَرَاغِبٌ أَنتَ عَنۡ ءَالِهَتِی یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُۖ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ لَأَرۡجُمَنَّكَۖ وَٱهۡجُرۡنِی مَلِیࣰّا ٤٦
qāla arāghibun anta ʿan ālihatī yāib'rāhīmu la-in lam tantahi la-arjumannaka wa-uh'jur'nī maliyya
His father answered, ‘Abraham, do you reject my gods? I will stone you if you do not stop this. Keep out of my way!’
47
قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكَۖ سَأَسۡتَغۡفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّیۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ بِی حَفِیࣰّا ٤٧
qāla salāmun ʿalayka sa-astaghfiru laka rabbī innahu kāna bī ḥafiyya
Abraham said, ‘Peace be with you: I will beg my Lord to forgive you- He is always gracious to me
48
وَأَعۡتَزِلُكُمۡ وَمَا تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَدۡعُوا۟ رَبِّی عَسَىٰۤ أَلَّاۤ أَكُونَ بِدُعَاۤءِ رَبِّی شَقِیࣰّا ٤٨
wa-aʿtazilukum wamā tadʿūna min dūni l-lahi wa-adʿū rabbī ʿasā allā akūna biduʿāi rabbī shaqiyya
but for now I will leave you, and the idols you all pray to, and I will pray to my Lord and trust that my prayer will not be in vain.’
