Verse 38:75 in Context

71 إِذۡ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ إِنِّی خَـٰلِقُۢ بَشَرࣰا مِّن طِینࣲ ۝٧١ idh qāla rabbuka lil'malāikati innī khāliqun basharan min ṭīni Your Lord said to the angels, ‘I will create a man from clay 72 فَإِذَا سَوَّیۡتُهُۥ وَنَفَخۡتُ فِیهِ مِن رُّوحِی فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٧٢ fa-idhā sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī faqaʿū lahu sājidīn When I have shaped him and breathed from My Spirit into him, bow down before him.’ 73 فَسَجَدَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ كُلُّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٧٣ fasajada l-malāikatu kulluhum ajmaʿūn The angels all bowed down together 74 إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٧٤ illā ib'līsa is'takbara wakāna mina l-kāfirīn but not Iblis, who was too proud. He became a rebel
75 قَالَ یَـٰۤإِبۡلِیسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسۡجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقۡتُ بِیَدَیَّۖ أَسۡتَكۡبَرۡتَ أَمۡ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَالِینَ ۝٧٥ qāla yāib'līsu mā manaʿaka an tasjuda limā khalaqtu biyadayya astakbarta am kunta mina l-ʿālīn God said, ‘Iblis, what prevents you from bowing down to the man I have made with My own hands? Are you too high and mighty?’
76 قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡهُ خَلَقۡتَنِی مِن نَّارࣲ وَخَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن طِینࣲ ۝٧٦ qāla anā khayrun min'hu khalaqtanī min nārin wakhalaqtahu min ṭīni Iblis said, ‘I am better than him: You made me from fire, and him from clay.’ 77 قَالَ فَٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِیمࣱ ۝٧٧ qāla fa-ukh'ruj min'hā fa-innaka rajīmu ‘Get out of here! You are rejected 78 وَإِنَّ عَلَیۡكَ لَعۡنَتِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٧٨ wa-inna ʿalayka laʿnatī ilā yawmi l-dīn My rejection will follow you till the Day of Judgement!’ 79 قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرۡنِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٧٩ qāla rabbi fa-anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn but Iblis said, ‘My Lord, grant me respite until the Day when they are raised from the dead,’
