Verse 5:115 in Context

111 وَإِذۡ أَوۡحَیۡتُ إِلَى ٱلۡحَوَارِیِّـۧنَ أَنۡ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِی وَبِرَسُولِی قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَٱشۡهَدۡ بِأَنَّنَا مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝١١١ wa-idh awḥaytu ilā l-ḥawāriyīna an āminū bī wabirasūlī qālū āmannā wa-ish'had bi-annanā mus'limūn and how I inspired the disciples to believe in Me and My messengers- they said, “We believe and bear witness that we devote ourselves [to God].”’ 112 إِذۡ قَالَ ٱلۡحَوَارِیُّونَ یَـٰعِیسَى ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ هَلۡ یَسۡتَطِیعُ رَبُّكَ أَن یُنَزِّلَ عَلَیۡنَا مَاۤىِٕدَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِۖ قَالَ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٢ idh qāla l-ḥawāriyūna yāʿīsā ib'na maryama hal yastaṭīʿu rabbuka an yunazzila ʿalaynā māidatan mina l-samāi qāla ittaqū l-laha in kuntum mu'minīn When the disciples said, ‘Jesus, son of Mary, can your Lord send down a feast to us from heaven?’ he said, ‘Beware of God if you are true believers.’ 113 قَالُوا۟ نُرِیدُ أَن نَّأۡكُلَ مِنۡهَا وَتَطۡمَىِٕنَّ قُلُوبُنَا وَنَعۡلَمَ أَن قَدۡ صَدَقۡتَنَا وَنَكُونَ عَلَیۡهَا مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِینَ ۝١١٣ qālū nurīdu an nakula min'hā wataṭma-inna qulūbunā wanaʿlama an qad ṣadaqtanā wanakūna ʿalayhā mina l-shāhidīn They said, ‘We wish to eat from it; to have our hearts reassured; to know that you have told us the truth; and to be witnesses of it.’ 114 قَالَ عِیسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَ ٱللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَاۤ أَنزِلۡ عَلَیۡنَا مَاۤىِٕدَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ تَكُونُ لَنَا عِیدࣰا لِّأَوَّلِنَا وَءَاخِرِنَا وَءَایَةࣰ مِّنكَۖ وَٱرۡزُقۡنَا وَأَنتَ خَیۡرُ ٱلرَّ ٰزِقِینَ ۝١١٤ qāla ʿīsā ub'nu maryama l-lahuma rabbanā anzil ʿalaynā māidatan mina l-samāi takūnu lanā ʿīdan li-awwalinā waākhirinā waāyatan minka wa-ur'zuq'nā wa-anta khayru l-rāziqīn Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘Lord, send down to us a feast from heaven so that we can have a festival- the first and last of us- and a sign from You. Provide for us: You are the best provider.’
115 قَالَ ٱللَّهُ إِنِّی مُنَزِّلُهَا عَلَیۡكُمۡۖ فَمَن یَكۡفُرۡ بَعۡدُ مِنكُمۡ فَإِنِّیۤ أُعَذِّبُهُۥ عَذَابࣰا لَّاۤ أُعَذِّبُهُۥۤ أَحَدࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١١٥ qāla l-lahu innī munazziluhā ʿalaykum faman yakfur baʿdu minkum fa-innī uʿadhibuhu ʿadhāban lā uʿadhibuhu aḥadan mina l-ʿālamīn God said, ‘I will send it down to you, but anyone who disbelieves after this will be punished with a punishment that I will not inflict on anyone else in the world.’
116 وَإِذۡ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ یَـٰعِیسَى ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ ءَأَنتَ قُلۡتَ لِلنَّاسِ ٱتَّخِذُونِی وَأُمِّیَ إِلَـٰهَیۡنِ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۖ قَالَ سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ مَا یَكُونُ لِیۤ أَنۡ أَقُولَ مَا لَیۡسَ لِی بِحَقٍّۚ إِن كُنتُ قُلۡتُهُۥ فَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتَهُۥۚ تَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی نَفۡسِی وَلَاۤ أَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی نَفۡسِكَۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلۡغُیُوبِ ۝١١٦ wa-idh qāla l-lahu yāʿīsā ib'na maryama a-anta qul'ta lilnnāsi ittakhidhūnī wa-ummiya ilāhayni min dūni l-lahi qāla sub'ḥānaka mā yakūnu lī an aqūla mā laysa lī biḥaqqin in kuntu qul'tuhu faqad ʿalim'tahu taʿlamu mā fī nafsī walā aʿlamu mā fī nafsika innaka anta ʿallāmu l-ghuyūb When God says, ‘Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to people, “Take me and my mother as two gods alongside God”?’ he will say, ‘May You be exalted! I would never say what I had no right to say- if I had said such a thing You would have known it: You know all that is within me, though I do not know what is within You, You alone have full knowledge of things unseen 117 مَا قُلۡتُ لَهُمۡ إِلَّا مَاۤ أَمَرۡتَنِی بِهِۦۤ أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ رَبِّی وَرَبَّكُمۡۚ وَكُنتُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ شَهِیدࣰا مَّا دُمۡتُ فِیهِمۡۖ فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّیۡتَنِی كُنتَ أَنتَ ٱلرَّقِیبَ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ وَأَنتَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ شَهِیدٌ ۝١١٧ mā qul'tu lahum illā mā amartanī bihi ani uʿ'budū l-laha rabbī warabbakum wakuntu ʿalayhim shahīdan mā dum'tu fīhim falammā tawaffaytanī kunta anta l-raqība ʿalayhim wa-anta ʿalā kulli shayin shahīdu I told them only what You commanded me to: “Worship God, my Lord and your Lord.” I was a witness over them during my time among them. Ever since You took my soul, You alone have been the watcher over them: You are witness to all thing 118 إِن تُعَذِّبۡهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ عِبَادُكَۖ وَإِن تَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ فَإِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝١١٨ in tuʿadhib'hum fa-innahum ʿibāduka wa-in taghfir lahum fa-innaka anta l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm and if You punish them, they are Your servants; if You forgive them, You are the Almighty, the Wise.’ 119 قَالَ ٱللَّهُ هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ یَنفَعُ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ صِدۡقُهُمۡۚ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣱ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدࣰاۖ رَّضِیَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنۡهُۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝١١٩ qāla l-lahu hādhā yawmu yanfaʿu l-ṣādiqīna ṣid'quhum lahum jannātun tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadan raḍiya l-lahu ʿanhum waraḍū ʿanhu dhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm God will say, ‘This is a Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness. They will have Gardens graced with flowing streams, there to remain for ever. God is pleased with them and they with Him: that is the supreme triumph.’
