About the Compiler
Abu Abd al-Rahman Ahmad ibn Shu'ayb ibn Ali ibn Sinan al-Khurasani al-Nasa'i
Imam al-Nasa'i was born in Nasa, Khorasan, and began his scholarly pursuits early, traveling from the age of 15 to seek hadith knowledge across the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, the Hijaz, Syria, and Egypt. He settled in Egypt where he lectured and became renowned as Hafiz al-Hadith for his exceptional memory and rigorous standard in narrator criticism. He authored several works including the larger Sunan al-Kubra before condensing it into Sunan al-Sughra at the request of the governor of Ramla. He passed away in Palestine or Mecca while traveling, having spent his life in the service of hadith scholarship.
Scholarly View
Sunan al-Nasa'i is one of the six canonical Kutub al-Sittah and is often ranked third or fifth among them for its high proportion of authentic narrations and strict criteria. Ibn Hajar and al-Dhahabi praised its authenticity as among the highest after the Sahihayn, though some note the presence of repetitions as a structural weakness.
Methodology & Grading
Al-Nasa'i first compiled the comprehensive Sunan al-Kubra, which included sahih, hasan, and other categories of hadith, then abridged it into Sunan al-Sughra (al-Mujtaba) focusing on the most authentic narrations at the request of the governor of Ramla. He applied strict narrator criteria, organized chapters by fiqh topics, and minimized the inclusion of weak hadith, explicitly noting weaknesses where they occurred.
