About the Compiler
Abu Abdillah Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Majah al-Rab'i al-Qazwini
Ibn Majah was born in Qazvin into a scholarly family and memorized the Quran early before dedicating himself to hadith studies. At age 22, he began more than 15 years of travel to Khorasan, Basra, Kufa, Baghdad, Damascus, Mecca, Medina, Egypt, Isfahan, and Nishapur, studying under luminaries such as Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir and Zuhair ibn Harb. Returning to Qazvin, he compiled his Sunan and taught widely, earning praise as a great hafiz and imam from scholars like al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar. He also authored works in tafsir and history, though his Sunan remains his most enduring contribution.
Scholarly View
Sunan Ibn Majah is the sixth of the Sunni Kutub al-Sittah, valued particularly for approximately 1,339 unique hadith (zawa'id) not found in the other five collections. Despite the presence of some weak and a small number of munkar narrations, its acceptance as the sixth canonical collection was endorsed by scholars including Abu Zur'ah al-Razi, who recognized its utility for research.
Methodology & Grading
Ibn Majah compiled his Sunan without a stated introduction detailing his conditions, focusing on fiqh issues and collecting multiple chains regardless of strict authenticity criteria. He organized the collection by jurisprudential chapters with some coverage of aqidah, dreams, and tribulations. His approach prioritized comprehensiveness over strictness, which accounts for both the collection's breadth and its inclusion of some weak narrations.
