1 Moses is called

مَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِتَشۡقَىٰۤ ۝٢

We have not revealed this Quran unto you to cause you misery.

mā anzalnā ʿalayka l-qur'āna litashq

إِلَّا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ لِّمَن یَخۡشَىٰ ۝٣

But as a reminder for anyone who has deference [of His Lord].

illā tadhkiratan liman yakhsh

تَنزِیلࣰا مِّمَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ ٱلۡعُلَى ۝٤

A revelation from Him who created the earth and the high heavens.

tanzīlan mimman khalaqa l-arḍa wal-samāwāti l-ʿul

ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ ۝٥

Ar-Rahman [The All-merciful] who has spread out His presence on the throne.

al-raḥmānu ʿalā l-ʿarshi is'taw

لَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَمَا تَحۡتَ ٱلثَّرَىٰ ۝٦

Unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth and all that is between them and all that is under the ether.

lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wamā baynahumā wamā taḥta l-thar

وَإِن تَجۡهَرۡ بِٱلۡقَوۡلِ فَإِنَّهُۥ یَعۡلَمُ ٱلسِّرَّ وَأَخۡفَى ۝٧

Whether you make aloud your speech [is all the same] for He indeed knows what is secret and what is hidden.

wa-in tajhar bil-qawli fa-innahu yaʿlamu l-sira wa-akhf

ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ لَهُ ٱلۡأَسۡمَاۤءُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ ۝٨

Allah! There is no deity save Him. To Him belong all the excellent names.

al-lahu lā ilāha illā huwa lahu l-asmāu l-ḥus'n

وَهَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِیثُ مُوسَىٰۤ ۝٩

Has the story of Moses come to you?

wahal atāka ḥadīthu mūs

إِذۡ رَءَا نَارࣰا فَقَالَ لِأَهۡلِهِ ٱمۡكُثُوۤا۟ إِنِّیۤ ءَانَسۡتُ نَارࣰا لَّعَلِّیۤ ءَاتِیكُم مِّنۡهَا بِقَبَسٍ أَوۡ أَجِدُ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ هُدࣰى ۝١٠

When he saw a fire he said to his family, “Tarry here. I have indeed perceived a fire maybe I can bring you from it a brand or I can find guidance at the fire.

idh raā nāran faqāla li-ahlihi um'kuthū innī ānastu nāran laʿallī ātīkum min'hā biqabasin aw ajidu ʿalā l-nāri huda

فَلَمَّاۤ أَتَىٰهَا نُودِیَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ ۝١١

But when he came to it [the fire] he was called upon, “O Moses!

falammā atāhā nūdiya yāmūs

إِنِّیۤ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكَ فَٱخۡلَعۡ نَعۡلَیۡكَ إِنَّكَ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوࣰى ۝١٢

Truly I am your Lord therefore take off your shoes for indeed you are in the sanctimonious valley of Tuwa.

innī anā rabbuka fa-ikh'laʿ naʿlayka innaka bil-wādi l-muqadasi ṭuwa

وَأَنَا ٱخۡتَرۡتُكَ فَٱسۡتَمِعۡ لِمَا یُوحَىٰۤ ۝١٣

And I have chosen you so listen then to what is being inspired [to you]

wa-anā ikh'tartuka fa-is'tamiʿ limā yūḥ

إِنَّنِیۤ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّاۤ أَنَا۠ فَٱعۡبُدۡنِی وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكۡرِیۤ ۝١٤

Truly, I am Allah. There is no deity except I. Therefore serve Me and establish the prayer for My remembrance.

innanī anā l-lahu lā ilāha illā anā fa-uʿ'bud'nī wa-aqimi l-ṣalata lidhik'r

إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ ءَاتِیَةٌ أَكَادُ أُخۡفِیهَا لِتُجۡزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا تَسۡعَىٰ ۝١٥

Truly the hour is coming. I well-nigh hide it so that every soul is rewarded for that which it has endeavored

inna l-sāʿata ātiyatun akādu ukh'fīhā lituj'zā kullu nafsin bimā tasʿ

فَلَا یَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنۡهَا مَن لَّا یُؤۡمِنُ بِهَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ فَتَرۡدَىٰ ۝١٦

So do not let one who does not believe in it [the hour] and who has followed his desire hinder you from [remembering] it lest you perish.

falā yaṣuddannaka ʿanhā man lā yu'minu bihā wa-ittabaʿa hawāhu fatard

وَمَا تِلۡكَ بِیَمِینِكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝١٧

And what is that in your right hand O Moses?”

wamā til'ka biyamīnika yāmūs

قَالَ هِیَ عَصَایَ أَتَوَكَّؤُا۟ عَلَیۡهَا وَأَهُشُّ بِهَا عَلَىٰ غَنَمِی وَلِیَ فِیهَا مَءَارِبُ أُخۡرَىٰ ۝١٨

He said, “It is my staff. I lean on it and I beat down leaves with it for my cattle and there are many other uses in it for me.”

qāla hiya ʿaṣāya atawakka-u ʿalayhā wa-ahushu bihā ʿalā ghanamī waliya fīhā maāribu ukh'r

قَالَ أَلۡقِهَا یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝١٩

He said, “Throw it O Moses!”

qāla alqihā yāmūs

فَأَلۡقَىٰهَا فَإِذَا هِیَ حَیَّةࣱ تَسۡعَىٰ ۝٢٠

So he threw it and behold! it is a snake in real motion.

fa-alqāhā fa-idhā hiya ḥayyatun tasʿ

قَالَ خُذۡهَا وَلَا تَخَفۡۖ سَنُعِیدُهَا سِیرَتَهَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٢١

He said, “Seize it and fear not. We shall bring it back to its former state”

qāla khudh'hā walā takhaf sanuʿīduhā sīratahā l-ūl

وَٱضۡمُمۡ یَدَكَ إِلَىٰ جَنَاحِكَ تَخۡرُجۡ بَیۡضَاۤءَ مِنۡ غَیۡرِ سُوۤءٍ ءَایَةً أُخۡرَىٰ ۝٢٢

And stick your hand to your side it will come forth white without any blemish, as another sign.

wa-uḍ'mum yadaka ilā janāḥika takhruj bayḍāa min ghayri sūin āyatan ukh'r

لِنُرِیَكَ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا ٱلۡكُبۡرَى ۝٢٣

So that We may show you from Our signs the most great.

linuriyaka min āyātinā l-kub'r

ٱذۡهَبۡ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ۝٢٤

Go to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed.

idh'hab ilā fir'ʿawna innahu ṭagh

2 Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱشۡرَحۡ لِی صَدۡرِی ۝٢٥

He [Moses] said, “O My Lord! Expand my bosom for me.

qāla rabbi ish'raḥ lī ṣadr

وَیَسِّرۡ لِیۤ أَمۡرِی ۝٢٦

And ease my affair for me.

wayassir lī amr

وَٱحۡلُلۡ عُقۡدَةࣰ مِّن لِّسَانِی ۝٢٧

And untie a knot from my tongue.

wa-uḥ'lul ʿuq'datan min lisān

یَفۡقَهُوا۟ قَوۡلِی ۝٢٨

That they may discern my speech.

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی وَزِیرࣰا مِّنۡ أَهۡلِی ۝٢٩

And appoint for me a helper from my family;

wa-ij'ʿal lī wazīran min ahl

هَـٰرُونَ أَخِی ۝٣٠

Aaron. My brother.

ٱشۡدُدۡ بِهِۦۤ أَزۡرِی ۝٣١

Buttress my strength through him.

ush'dud bihi azr

وَأَشۡرِكۡهُ فِیۤ أَمۡرِی ۝٣٢

And give him a share in my affair.

wa-ashrik'hu fī amr

كَیۡ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَثِیرࣰا ۝٣٣

So that we may glorify You abundantly.

kay nusabbiḥaka kathīra

وَنَذۡكُرَكَ كَثِیرًا ۝٣٤

And remember You abundantly.

wanadhkuraka kathīra

إِنَّكَ كُنتَ بِنَا بَصِیرࣰا ۝٣٥

For You truly are All-seeing about us”

innaka kunta binā baṣīra

قَالَ قَدۡ أُوتِیتَ سُؤۡلَكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٣٦

He said, “Indeed you are granted your request O Moses!”

qāla qad ūtīta su'laka yāmūs

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَیۡكَ مَرَّةً أُخۡرَىٰۤ ۝٣٧

And indeed once again We have conferred Our favor upon you.

walaqad manannā ʿalayka marratan ukh'r

إِذۡ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أُمِّكَ مَا یُوحَىٰۤ ۝٣٨

And remember when We inspired to your mother what is inspired.

idh awḥaynā ilā ummika mā yūḥ

أَنِ ٱقۡذِفِیهِ فِی ٱلتَّابُوتِ فَٱقۡذِفِیهِ فِی ٱلۡیَمِّ فَلۡیُلۡقِهِ ٱلۡیَمُّ بِٱلسَّاحِلِ یَأۡخُذۡهُ عَدُوࣱّ لِّی وَعَدُوࣱّ لَّهُۥۚ وَأَلۡقَیۡتُ عَلَیۡكَ مَحَبَّةࣰ مِّنِّی وَلِتُصۡنَعَ عَلَىٰ عَیۡنِیۤ ۝٣٩

Saying that, “Cast him [Moses] in the chest and then cast it [the chest] in the sea and let the sea cast him on the bank and an enemy of mine and an enemy of his will take it and I have put over you love from Me so that you are reared under My eyes.

ani iq'dhifīhi fī l-tābūti fa-iq'dhifīhi fī l-yami falyul'qihi l-yamu bil-sāḥili yakhudh'hu ʿaduwwun lī waʿaduwwun lahu wa-alqaytu ʿalayka maḥabbatan minnī walituṣ'naʿa ʿalā ʿayn

إِذۡ تَمۡشِیۤ أُخۡتُكَ فَتَقُولُ هَلۡ أَدُلُّكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن یَكۡفُلُهُۥۖ فَرَجَعۡنَـٰكَ إِلَىٰۤ أُمِّكَ كَیۡ تَقَرَّ عَیۡنُهَا وَلَا تَحۡزَنَۚ وَقَتَلۡتَ نَفۡسࣰا فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰكَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَمِّ وَفَتَنَّـٰكَ فُتُونࣰاۚ فَلَبِثۡتَ سِنِینَ فِیۤ أَهۡلِ مَدۡیَنَ ثُمَّ جِئۡتَ عَلَىٰ قَدَرࣲ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٤٠

And [remember] when your sister went out and she said [to pharaoh and his people] “Can I show you someone who can nurture him [for you]?” so We returned you back to your mother so that her eye may find coolness and that she grieve not. And [when] you killed a soul, We saved you from distress and We tried you through many trials then you remained among the folk of Madian many years and then you came back as ordained O Moses.”

idh tamshī ukh'tuka fataqūlu hal adullukum ʿalā man yakfuluhu farajaʿnāka ilā ummika kay taqarra ʿaynuhā walā taḥzana waqatalta nafsan fanajjaynāka mina l-ghami wafatannāka futūnan falabith'ta sinīna fī ahli madyana thumma ji'ta ʿalā qadarin yāmūs

وَٱصۡطَنَعۡتُكَ لِنَفۡسِی ۝٤١

And I have groomed you for My own self.

wa-iṣ'ṭanaʿtuka linafs

ٱذۡهَبۡ أَنتَ وَأَخُوكَ بِءَایَـٰتِی وَلَا تَنِیَا فِی ذِكۡرِی ۝٤٢

Go forth you and your brother with My signs and do not tire both of you in remembering Me.

idh'hab anta wa-akhūka biāyātī walā taniyā fī dhik'r

ٱذۡهَبَاۤ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ۝٤٣

Go forth both of you to Pharaoh for he indeed has transgressed [against His Lord].

idh'habā ilā fir'ʿawna innahu ṭagh

فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوۡلࣰا لَّیِّنࣰا لَّعَلَّهُۥ یَتَذَكَّرُ أَوۡ یَخۡشَىٰ ۝٤٤

And so both of you speak unto him a gentle word perhaps he may remember or defer to [His Lord].

faqūlā lahu qawlan layyinan laʿallahu yatadhakkaru aw yakhsh

قَالَا رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن یَفۡرُطَ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوۡ أَن یَطۡغَىٰ ۝٤٥

They both said, “O our Lord, we do fear lest he hastily dispatch us or that he transgresses.”

qālā rabbanā innanā nakhāfu an yafruṭa ʿalaynā aw an yaṭgh

قَالَ لَا تَخَافَاۤۖ إِنَّنِی مَعَكُمَاۤ أَسۡمَعُ وَأَرَىٰ ۝٤٦

He said, “Do not fear both of you for truly I am with both of you and I hear and I see.”

qāla lā takhāfā innanī maʿakumā asmaʿu wa-ar

فَأۡتِیَاهُ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولَا رَبِّكَ فَأَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ وَلَا تُعَذِّبۡهُمۡۖ قَدۡ جِئۡنَـٰكَ بِءَایَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكَۖ وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ عَلَىٰ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ ۝٤٧

Go hence both of you to him and say both of you, “We are messengers of your Lord therefore send with us the children of Israel and do not afflict them with any more punishment. Truly we have come to you with a sign from Your Lord and the peace is on him who follows the guidance.

fatiyāhu faqūlā innā rasūlā rabbika fa-arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīla walā tuʿadhib'hum qad ji'nāka biāyatin min rabbika wal-salāmu ʿalā mani ittabaʿa l-hud

إِنَّا قَدۡ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡنَاۤ أَنَّ ٱلۡعَذَابَ عَلَىٰ مَن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ۝٤٨

For we truly have been inspired that the punishment is on him who belies [Allah’s signs] and turns away from it [in arrogance].

innā qad ūḥiya ilaynā anna l-ʿadhāba ʿalā man kadhaba watawall

قَالَ فَمَن رَّبُّكُمَا یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٤٩

He [Pharaoh] said, “who then is the Lord of you two, O Moses?”

qāla faman rabbukumā yāmūs

قَالَ رَبُّنَا ٱلَّذِیۤ أَعۡطَىٰ كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ خَلۡقَهُۥ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ ۝٥٠

He said, “Our Lord is one who gave everything its complete form and then guided it.”

qāla rabbunā alladhī aʿṭā kulla shayin khalqahu thumma had

قَالَ فَمَا بَالُ ٱلۡقُرُونِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٥١

He said, “What then is the case of the former generations?”

qāla famā bālu l-qurūni l-ūl

قَالَ عِلۡمُهَا عِندَ رَبِّی فِی كِتَـٰبࣲۖ لَّا یَضِلُّ رَبِّی وَلَا یَنسَى ۝٥٢

He said, “The knowledge of them is with My Lord in a book. My Lord does not err nor does He forget.”

qāla ʿil'muhā ʿinda rabbī fī kitābin lā yaḍillu rabbī walā yans

ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَهۡدࣰا وَسَلَكَ لَكُمۡ فِیهَا سُبُلࣰا وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا مِّن نَّبَاتࣲ شَتَّىٰ ۝٥٣

It is He who has made the earth for you like a well laid bed and has traced out for you therein thoroughfares and has sent down from the heaven rain water and with it We brought forth pairs of diverse vegetation.

alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa mahdan wasalaka lakum fīhā subulan wa-anzala mina l-samāi māan fa-akhrajnā bihi azwājan min nabātin shatt

كُلُوا۟ وَٱرۡعَوۡا۟ أَنۡعَـٰمَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّأُو۟لِی ٱلنُّهَىٰ ۝٥٤

Eat thereof and graze your cattle. Truly in that indeed are signs for people of understanding.

kulū wa-ir'ʿaw anʿāmakum inna fī dhālika laāyātin li-ulī l-nuh

3 Moses and Enchanters

۞ مِنۡهَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ وَفِیهَا نُعِیدُكُمۡ وَمِنۡهَا نُخۡرِجُكُمۡ تَارَةً أُخۡرَىٰ ۝٥٥

From it We created you and in it We will return you and from it We will bring you forth once again.

min'hā khalaqnākum wafīhā nuʿīdukum wamin'hā nukh'rijukum tāratan ukh'r

وَلَقَدۡ أَرَیۡنَـٰهُ ءَایَـٰتِنَا كُلَّهَا فَكَذَّبَ وَأَبَىٰ ۝٥٦

And truly We showed him all of Our signs but he belied them and refused [to submit].

walaqad araynāhu āyātinā kullahā fakadhaba wa-ab

قَالَ أَجِئۡتَنَا لِتُخۡرِجَنَا مِنۡ أَرۡضِنَا بِسِحۡرِكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٥٧

He said, “Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic O Moses?”

qāla aji'tanā litukh'rijanā min arḍinā bisiḥ'rika yāmūs

فَلَنَأۡتِیَنَّكَ بِسِحۡرࣲ مِّثۡلِهِۦ فَٱجۡعَلۡ بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَكَ مَوۡعِدࣰا لَّا نُخۡلِفُهُۥ نَحۡنُ وَلَاۤ أَنتَ مَكَانࣰا سُوࣰى ۝٥٨

We will therefore surely bring unto you a magic like unto it therefore appoint a tryst between us and you which we shall not fail neither us nor you in a place well suitable to all.

falanatiyannaka bisiḥ'rin mith'lihi fa-ij'ʿal baynanā wabaynaka mawʿidan lā nukh'lifuhu naḥnu walā anta makānan suwa

قَالَ مَوۡعِدُكُمۡ یَوۡمُ ٱلزِّینَةِ وَأَن یُحۡشَرَ ٱلنَّاسُ ضُحࣰى ۝٥٩

He [Moses] said, “Your tryst shall be the day of the feasting and let the people be gathered at the times of the early hours of the day.”

qāla mawʿidukum yawmu l-zīnati wa-an yuḥ'shara l-nāsu ḍuḥa

فَتَوَلَّىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فَجَمَعَ كَیۡدَهُۥ ثُمَّ أَتَىٰ ۝٦٠

Thereupon Pharaoh went away and he put together all his plans and then he came.

fatawallā fir'ʿawnu fajamaʿa kaydahu thumma at

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰ وَیۡلَكُمۡ لَا تَفۡتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبࣰا فَیُسۡحِتَكُم بِعَذَابࣲۖ وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ ۝٦١

Moses said to them, “Woe unto you. Do not contrive a lie against Allah lest He eradicate you with a punishment and truly whosoever contrives a lie [against Allah] will be met with frustration.”

qāla lahum mūsā waylakum lā taftarū ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban fayus'ḥitakum biʿadhābin waqad khāba mani if'tar

فَتَنَـٰزَعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَهُم بَیۡنَهُمۡ وَأَسَرُّوا۟ ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ ۝٦٢

So they disputed among them about their affair and they kept their counsel secret.

fatanāzaʿū amrahum baynahum wa-asarrū l-najw

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَ ٰنِ لَسَـٰحِرَ ٰنِ یُرِیدَانِ أَن یُخۡرِجَاكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِمَا وَیَذۡهَبَا بِطَرِیقَتِكُمُ ٱلۡمُثۡلَىٰ ۝٦٣

They said, “These two are surely sorcerers. They intend to drive you out from your land with their magic and [they intend] to do away with your way, the most exemplary.”

qālū in hādhāni lasāḥirāni yurīdāni an yukh'rijākum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihimā wayadhhabā biṭarīqatikumu l-muth'l

فَأَجۡمِعُوا۟ كَیۡدَكُمۡ ثُمَّ ٱئۡتُوا۟ صَفࣰّاۚ وَقَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مَنِ ٱسۡتَعۡلَىٰ ۝٦٤

Therefore put together your plans and then come forward in a row and whosoever gets the upper hand today surely will prosper.

fa-ajmiʿū kaydakum thumma i'tū ṣaffan waqad aflaḥa l-yawma mani is'taʿl

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ إِمَّاۤ أَن تُلۡقِیَ وَإِمَّاۤ أَن نَّكُونَ أَوَّلَ مَنۡ أَلۡقَىٰ ۝٦٥

They said, “O Moses, either you throw or we be the ones who are the first to throw.”

qālū yāmūsā immā an tul'qiya wa-immā an nakūna awwala man alq

قَالَ بَلۡ أَلۡقُوا۟ۖ فَإِذَا حِبَالُهُمۡ وَعِصِیُّهُمۡ یُخَیَّلُ إِلَیۡهِ مِن سِحۡرِهِمۡ أَنَّهَا تَسۡعَىٰ ۝٦٦

He said, “Nay, you throw” and behold their ropes and their sticks due to their magic was made to appear to him to be in real motion.

qāla bal alqū fa-idhā ḥibāluhum waʿiṣiyyuhum yukhayyalu ilayhi min siḥ'rihim annahā tasʿ

فَأَوۡجَسَ فِی نَفۡسِهِۦ خِیفَةࣰ مُّوسَىٰ ۝٦٧

So Moses sensed a fear within himself.

fa-awjasa fī nafsihi khīfatan mūs

قُلۡنَا لَا تَخَفۡ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ ۝٦٨

We said, “Do not fear truly you are the one who will have the upper hand.

qul'nā lā takhaf innaka anta l-aʿl

وَأَلۡقِ مَا فِی یَمِینِكَ تَلۡقَفۡ مَا صَنَعُوۤا۟ۖ إِنَّمَا صَنَعُوا۟ كَیۡدُ سَـٰحِرࣲۖ وَلَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلسَّاحِرُ حَیۡثُ أَتَىٰ ۝٦٩

And throw that which is in your right hand it will swallow up all that they have fabricated” and they have fabricated nothing except the tricks of a magician but the magician will not prosper no matter from which way he comes.

wa-alqi mā fī yamīnika talqaf mā ṣanaʿū innamā ṣanaʿū kaydu sāḥirin walā yuf'liḥu l-sāḥiru ḥaythu at

فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سُجَّدࣰا قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ هَـٰرُونَ وَمُوسَىٰ ۝٧٠

The magicians thereupon fell down prostrate and said, “We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses”

fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sujjadan qālū āmannā birabbi hārūna wamūs

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَۖ فَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ فِی جُذُوعِ ٱلنَّخۡلِ وَلَتَعۡلَمُنَّ أَیُّنَاۤ أَشَدُّ عَذَابࣰا وَأَبۡقَىٰ ۝٧١

He [Pharaoh] said, “Believe you in him before I had given you permission? He certainly is your superior who has taught you the magic. Thus I will most certainly cut your hands and your legs from opposite sides and I will most certainly crucify you on the trunks of palm trees and you will most certainly come to know which of us is capable of inflicting the most severe punishment. [And which of us] will outlast [the other].”

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra fala-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum fī judhūʿi l-nakhli walataʿlamunna ayyunā ashaddu ʿadhāban wa-abq

قَالُوا۟ لَن نُّؤۡثِرَكَ عَلَىٰ مَا جَاۤءَنَا مِنَ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِی فَطَرَنَاۖ فَٱقۡضِ مَاۤ أَنتَ قَاضٍۖ إِنَّمَا تَقۡضِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۤ ۝٧٢

They said, “We shall never prefer you above all that has come to us from the clear signs and above the one who has originated our creation. Therefore decree that which you are going to decree. You can only decree in regards to the life of this world.

qālū lan nu'thiraka ʿalā mā jāanā mina l-bayināti wa-alladhī faṭaranā fa-iq'ḍi mā anta qāḍin innamā taqḍī hādhihi l-ḥayata l-dun'y

إِنَّاۤ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّنَا لِیَغۡفِرَ لَنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَا وَمَاۤ أَكۡرَهۡتَنَا عَلَیۡهِ مِنَ ٱلسِّحۡرِۗ وَٱللَّهُ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰۤ ۝٧٣

We truly believe in our Lord [hoping] that He will forgive us our faults and all that magic that you have compelled us to and Allah is Best and is Most Lasting.”

innā āmannā birabbinā liyaghfira lanā khaṭāyānā wamā akrahtanā ʿalayhi mina l-siḥ'ri wal-lahu khayrun wa-abq

إِنَّهُۥ مَن یَأۡتِ رَبَّهُۥ مُجۡرِمࣰا فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ جَهَنَّمَ لَا یَمُوتُ فِیهَا وَلَا یَحۡیَىٰ ۝٧٤

Truly whoever comes to His Lord as an evildoer, for him indeed is the hell wherein he will not die nor will he live.

innahu man yati rabbahu muj'riman fa-inna lahu jahannama lā yamūtu fīhā walā yaḥy

وَمَن یَأۡتِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنࣰا قَدۡ عَمِلَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمُ ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتُ ٱلۡعُلَىٰ ۝٧٥

But whosoever comes to Him as a believer and has done the righteous deeds indeed for them would be the ranks most high.

waman yatihi mu'minan qad ʿamila l-ṣāliḥāti fa-ulāika lahumu l-darajātu l-ʿul

جَنَّـٰتُ عَدۡنࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَاۤءُ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ ۝٧٦

Gardens of eternal felicity under which the rivers flow to abide therein forever and that is the reward of the one who sanctifies his soul.

jannātu ʿadnin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wadhālika jazāu man tazakk

4 Israelites worship Calf

وَلَقَدۡ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِی فَٱضۡرِبۡ لَهُمۡ طَرِیقࣰا فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ یَبَسࣰا لَّا تَخَـٰفُ دَرَكࣰا وَلَا تَخۡشَىٰ ۝٧٧

And truly We inspired Moses [saying] that, “Journey forth with My slaves at night and strike for them a dry path through the sea and you will not fear being overtaken and nor will you fear being overwhelmed [with water].”

walaqad awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī fa-iḍ'rib lahum ṭarīqan fī l-baḥri yabasan lā takhāfu darakan walā takhsh

فَأَتۡبَعَهُمۡ فِرۡعَوۡنُ بِجُنُودِهِۦ فَغَشِیَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡیَمِّ مَا غَشِیَهُمۡ ۝٧٨

Then Pharaoh pursued them with his army but they were covered from the sea with that what overwhelmed them.

fa-atbaʿahum fir'ʿawnu bijunūdihi faghashiyahum mina l-yami mā ghashiyahu

وَأَضَلَّ فِرۡعَوۡنُ قَوۡمَهُۥ وَمَا هَدَىٰ ۝٧٩

And Pharaoh led his people astray and he did not guide them.

wa-aḍalla fir'ʿawnu qawmahu wamā had

یَـٰبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ قَدۡ أَنجَیۡنَـٰكُم مِّنۡ عَدُوِّكُمۡ وَوَ ٰعَدۡنَـٰكُمۡ جَانِبَ ٱلطُّورِ ٱلۡأَیۡمَنَ وَنَزَّلۡنَا عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلۡوَىٰ ۝٨٠

“O children of Israel! We did save you from your enemy and We have made a tryst with you on the right hand side of the mount of Toor and We sent down manna and salva on you.

yābanī is'rāīla qad anjaynākum min ʿaduwwikum wawāʿadnākum jāniba l-ṭūri l-aymana wanazzalnā ʿalaykumu l-mana wal-salw

كُلُوا۟ مِن طَیِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ وَلَا تَطۡغَوۡا۟ فِیهِ فَیَحِلَّ عَلَیۡكُمۡ غَضَبِیۖ وَمَن یَحۡلِلۡ عَلَیۡهِ غَضَبِی فَقَدۡ هَوَىٰ ۝٨١

Eat from the good things which We have provided you and do not abuse it lest My anger falls upon you and whosoever My anger falls upon, he indeed has fallen down.

kulū min ṭayyibāti mā razaqnākum walā taṭghaw fīhi fayaḥilla ʿalaykum ghaḍabī waman yaḥlil ʿalayhi ghaḍabī faqad haw

وَإِنِّی لَغَفَّارࣱ لِّمَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا ثُمَّ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ ۝٨٢

And I am truly Most Forgiving to anyone who repents and believes and does a righteous deed and then keeps on the right guidance.

wa-innī laghaffārun liman tāba waāmana waʿamila ṣāliḥan thumma ih'tad

۞ وَمَاۤ أَعۡجَلَكَ عَن قَوۡمِكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٨٣

And what caused you to leave your people in haste O Moses?”

wamā aʿjalaka ʿan qawmika yāmūs

قَالَ هُمۡ أُو۟لَاۤءِ عَلَىٰۤ أَثَرِی وَعَجِلۡتُ إِلَیۡكَ رَبِّ لِتَرۡضَىٰ ۝٨٤

He said, “Here they are coming in my footsteps and I hastened to You My Lord so that You may be pleased.”

qāla hum ulāi ʿalā atharī waʿajil'tu ilayka rabbi litarḍ

قَالَ فَإِنَّا قَدۡ فَتَنَّا قَوۡمَكَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِكَ وَأَضَلَّهُمُ ٱلسَّامِرِیُّ ۝٨٥

He [Allah] said, “We indeed have put a test on your people after you and Samiri has led them astray.”

qāla fa-innā qad fatannā qawmaka min baʿdika wa-aḍallahumu l-sāmiriy

فَرَجَعَ مُوسَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ غَضۡبَـٰنَ أَسِفࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَلَمۡ یَعِدۡكُمۡ رَبُّكُمۡ وَعۡدًا حَسَنًاۚ أَفَطَالَ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡعَهۡدُ أَمۡ أَرَدتُّمۡ أَن یَحِلَّ عَلَیۡكُمۡ غَضَبࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ فَأَخۡلَفۡتُم مَّوۡعِدِی ۝٨٦

So Moses returned to his people angry and sad. He said, “O my people, has Your Lord not promised to you a goodly promise? Did then the covenant seem far away to you or did you look forward that a punishment descend on you from Your Lord so you broke my appointment?”

farajaʿa mūsā ilā qawmihi ghaḍbāna asifan qāla yāqawmi alam yaʿid'kum rabbukum waʿdan ḥasanan afaṭāla ʿalaykumu l-ʿahdu am aradttum an yaḥilla ʿalaykum ghaḍabun min rabbikum fa-akhlaftum mawʿid

قَالُوا۟ مَاۤ أَخۡلَفۡنَا مَوۡعِدَكَ بِمَلۡكِنَا وَلَـٰكِنَّا حُمِّلۡنَاۤ أَوۡزَارࣰا مِّن زِینَةِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ فَقَذَفۡنَـٰهَا فَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَلۡقَى ٱلسَّامِرِیُّ ۝٨٧

They said, “We have not broken your appointment through our own volition but we were burdened with loads of ornaments of the people [Egyptians] so we casted them this is how Samiri casted [in the fire]”

qālū mā akhlafnā mawʿidaka bimalkinā walākinnā ḥummil'nā awzāran min zīnati l-qawmi faqadhafnāhā fakadhālika alqā l-sāmiriy

فَأَخۡرَجَ لَهُمۡ عِجۡلࣰا جَسَدࣰا لَّهُۥ خُوَارࣱ فَقَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ وَإِلَـٰهُ مُوسَىٰ فَنَسِیَ ۝٨٨

So he brought forth for them a calf with a body and it has a bellowing sound so they said, “This is your god and the god of Moses” but he [Samiri] forgot.

fa-akhraja lahum ʿij'lan jasadan lahu khuwārun faqālū hādhā ilāhukum wa-ilāhu mūsā fanasiy

أَفَلَا یَرَوۡنَ أَلَّا یَرۡجِعُ إِلَیۡهِمۡ قَوۡلࣰا وَلَا یَمۡلِكُ لَهُمۡ ضَرࣰّا وَلَا نَفۡعࣰا ۝٨٩

Do they not see that it does not speak back to them a word and does not have control over any harm or any benefit for them?

afalā yarawna allā yarjiʿu ilayhim qawlan walā yamliku lahum ḍarran walā nafʿa

5 End of Calf-worship

وَلَقَدۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ هَـٰرُونُ مِن قَبۡلُ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا فُتِنتُم بِهِۦۖ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ فَٱتَّبِعُونِی وَأَطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرِی ۝٩٠

And Aaron did tell it to them before [the coming of Moses], “O my people, you are only being tested by this and truly Your Lord is Ar-Rahman [The All-merciful] therefore follow me and obey my commandment.”

walaqad qāla lahum hārūnu min qablu yāqawmi innamā futintum bihi wa-inna rabbakumu l-raḥmānu fa-ittabiʿūnī wa-aṭīʿū amr

قَالُوا۟ لَن نَّبۡرَحَ عَلَیۡهِ عَـٰكِفِینَ حَتَّىٰ یَرۡجِعَ إِلَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ ۝٩١

They said, “We will never cease to devoutly worship it [the calf] until Moses comes back to us.”

qālū lan nabraḥa ʿalayhi ʿākifīna ḥattā yarjiʿa ilaynā mūs

قَالَ یَـٰهَـٰرُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذۡ رَأَیۡتَهُمۡ ضَلُّوۤا۟ ۝٩٢

He [Moses] said, “O Aaron! What prevented you [from stopping them] when you saw them going astray?

qāla yāhārūnu mā manaʿaka idh ra-aytahum ḍall

أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِۖ أَفَعَصَیۡتَ أَمۡرِی ۝٩٣

Do you not follow me? Have you disobeyed my commandment?”

allā tattabiʿani afaʿaṣayta amr

قَالَ یَبۡنَؤُمَّ لَا تَأۡخُذۡ بِلِحۡیَتِی وَلَا بِرَأۡسِیۤۖ إِنِّی خَشِیتُ أَن تَقُولَ فَرَّقۡتَ بَیۡنَ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ وَلَمۡ تَرۡقُبۡ قَوۡلِی ۝٩٤

He said, “O son of my mother! Do not seize me by my beard nor by my hair. I truly feared lest you say that you have caused a split among the children of Israel and you did not regard my word.”

qāla yabna-umma lā takhudh biliḥ'yatī walā birasī innī khashītu an taqūla farraqta bayna banī is'rāīla walam tarqub qawl

قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكَ یَـٰسَـٰمِرِیُّ ۝٩٥

He said, “What then is your case O Samiri?”

qāla famā khaṭbuka yāsāmiriyy

قَالَ بَصُرۡتُ بِمَا لَمۡ یَبۡصُرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَقَبَضۡتُ قَبۡضَةࣰ مِّنۡ أَثَرِ ٱلرَّسُولِ فَنَبَذۡتُهَا وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ سَوَّلَتۡ لِی نَفۡسِی ۝٩٦

He said, “I saw that which they did not see so I took a handful of the footsteps of the messenger then I cast it [into the calf] and thus has my soul made it seemly for me.”

qāla baṣur'tu bimā lam yabṣurū bihi faqabaḍtu qabḍatan min athari l-rasūli fanabadhtuhā wakadhālika sawwalat lī nafs

قَالَ فَٱذۡهَبۡ فَإِنَّ لَكَ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ أَن تَقُولَ لَا مِسَاسَۖ وَإِنَّ لَكَ مَوۡعِدࣰا لَّن تُخۡلَفَهُۥۖ وَٱنظُرۡ إِلَىٰۤ إِلَـٰهِكَ ٱلَّذِی ظَلۡتَ عَلَیۡهِ عَاكِفࣰاۖ لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥ ثُمَّ لَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥ فِی ٱلۡیَمِّ نَسۡفًا ۝٩٧

He said, “Therefore be gone! Then certainly your fate in life is to say, ‘Do not touch [me]’ and truly there is an appointed tryst for you in which you shall never be failed and look at this deity of yours to which you have so devoutly dedicated yourself. We shall most certainly burn it and then scatter [its ashes] in the sea a complete scattering.”

qāla fa-idh'hab fa-inna laka fī l-ḥayati an taqūla lā misāsa wa-inna laka mawʿidan lan tukh'lafahu wa-unẓur ilā ilāhika alladhī ẓalta ʿalayhi ʿākifan lanuḥarriqannahu thumma lanansifannahu fī l-yami nasfa

إِنَّمَاۤ إِلَـٰهُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ عِلۡمࣰا ۝٩٨

Your only deity is Allah whom there is no deity besides Him. He encompasses everything in [His] knowledge.

innamā ilāhukumu l-lahu alladhī lā ilāha illā huwa wasiʿa kulla shayin ʿil'ma

كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَیۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤءِ مَا قَدۡ سَبَقَۚ وَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰكَ مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكۡرࣰا ۝٩٩

Thus We relate unto you some of the news of things that had gone before and We have indeed given unto you a remembrance from Our own presence.

kadhālika naquṣṣu ʿalayka min anbāi mā qad sabaqa waqad ātaynāka min ladunnā dhik'ra

مَّنۡ أَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهُ فَإِنَّهُۥ یَحۡمِلُ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وِزۡرًا ۝١٠٠

Whosoever turns away from it, he will be the very one who will carry a heavy burden on the day of resurrection.

man aʿraḍa ʿanhu fa-innahu yaḥmilu yawma l-qiyāmati wiz'ra

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهِۖ وَسَاۤءَ لَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ حِمۡلࣰا ۝١٠١

to abide therein [in that state] forever and how woeful a burden on them on the day of resurrection;

khālidīna fīhi wasāa lahum yawma l-qiyāmati ḥim'la

یَوۡمَ یُنفَخُ فِی ٱلصُّورِۚ وَنَحۡشُرُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ زُرۡقࣰا ۝١٠٢

The day when the trumpet will be blown and We will gather [all] the evildoers on that day pale in the eyes.

yawma yunfakhu fī l-ṣūri wanaḥshuru l-muj'rimīna yawma-idhin zur'qa

یَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا عَشۡرࣰا ۝١٠٣

Whispering among themselves [some say], “You have not tarried in the world but ten days.”

yatakhāfatūna baynahum in labith'tum illā ʿashra

نَّحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا یَقُولُونَ إِذۡ یَقُولُ أَمۡثَلُهُمۡ طَرِیقَةً إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا یَوۡمࣰا ۝١٠٤

It is We who know well about what they say when the one among them who is best in position says, “You have tarried [in the world] but a day.”

naḥnu aʿlamu bimā yaqūlūna idh yaqūlu amthaluhum ṭarīqatan in labith'tum illā yawma

6 The Prophet's Opponents

وَیَسۡءَلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡجِبَالِ فَقُلۡ یَنسِفُهَا رَبِّی نَسۡفࣰا ۝١٠٥

And they ask you concerning the mountains say, “My Lord will reduce them to dust and scatter them.”

wayasalūnaka ʿani l-jibāli faqul yansifuhā rabbī nasfa

فَیَذَرُهَا قَاعࣰا صَفۡصَفࣰا ۝١٠٦

And He will leave it [the earth] like a plain all level.

fayadharuhā qāʿan ṣafṣafa

لَّا تَرَىٰ فِیهَا عِوَجࣰا وَلَاۤ أَمۡتࣰا ۝١٠٧

You will see no curve in it nor a bump.

lā tarā fīhā ʿiwajan walā amta

یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلدَّاعِیَ لَا عِوَجَ لَهُۥۖ وَخَشَعَتِ ٱلۡأَصۡوَاتُ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ فَلَا تَسۡمَعُ إِلَّا هَمۡسࣰا ۝١٠٨

That day they will follow the caller in whom there is no crookedness and all the voices are hushed for Ar-Rahman [The All-merciful] and you will hear nothing but whispers.

yawma-idhin yattabiʿūna l-dāʿiya lā ʿiwaja lahu wakhashaʿati l-aṣwātu lilrraḥmāni falā tasmaʿu illā hamsa

یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لَّا تَنفَعُ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ إِلَّا مَنۡ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ وَرَضِیَ لَهُۥ قَوۡلࣰا ۝١٠٩

On that day the intercession will avail none except one for whom Ar-Rahman [The All-merciful] will have granted permission [to intercede] and He is pleased for him to speak.

yawma-idhin lā tanfaʿu l-shafāʿatu illā man adhina lahu l-raḥmānu waraḍiya lahu qawla

یَعۡلَمُ مَا بَیۡنَ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَمَا خَلۡفَهُمۡ وَلَا یُحِیطُونَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣰا ۝١١٠

He knows what is before them and what is behind them but they do not encompass Him in knowledge.

yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wamā khalfahum walā yuḥīṭūna bihi ʿil'ma

۞ وَعَنَتِ ٱلۡوُجُوهُ لِلۡحَیِّ ٱلۡقَیُّومِۖ وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنۡ حَمَلَ ظُلۡمࣰا ۝١١١

And humbled will be the faces for The Ever-living, The Upholder of Everything and whosoever bears an offence, he indeed will meet with frustration.

waʿanati l-wujūhu lil'ḥayyi l-qayūmi waqad khāba man ḥamala ẓul'ma

وَمَن یَعۡمَلۡ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنࣱ فَلَا یَخَافُ ظُلۡمࣰا وَلَا هَضۡمࣰا ۝١١٢

And whosoever does any work from the righteous deeds while he is a believer, he will not have any fear of any offence [against him] nor any cheating.

waman yaʿmal mina l-ṣāliḥāti wahuwa mu'minun falā yakhāfu ẓul'man walā haḍma

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَانًا عَرَبِیࣰّا وَصَرَّفۡنَا فِیهِ مِنَ ٱلۡوَعِیدِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَّقُونَ أَوۡ یُحۡدِثُ لَهُمۡ ذِكۡرࣰا ۝١١٣

And thus We have revealed it as an Arabic Quran and We have given in it many facets from the warning so that perhaps they will revere Allah or perhaps it will occasion for them a renewed remembrance.

wakadhālika anzalnāhu qur'ānan ʿarabiyyan waṣarrafnā fīhi mina l-waʿīdi laʿallahum yattaqūna aw yuḥ'dithu lahum dhik'ra

فَتَعَـٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمَلِكُ ٱلۡحَقُّۗ وَلَا تَعۡجَلۡ بِٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یُقۡضَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكَ وَحۡیُهُۥۖ وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدۡنِی عِلۡمࣰا ۝١١٤

Far exalted is Allah, The King, The Truth and do not be in haste with the Quran before its revelation to you is consummated and say, “O My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”

fataʿālā l-lahu l-maliku l-ḥaqu walā taʿjal bil-qur'āni min qabli an yuq'ḍā ilayka waḥyuhu waqul rabbi zid'nī ʿil'ma

وَلَقَدۡ عَهِدۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ ءَادَمَ مِن قَبۡلُ فَنَسِیَ وَلَمۡ نَجِدۡ لَهُۥ عَزۡمࣰا ۝١١٥

And indeed We gave Our assignment to Adam beforetime but he forgot and We did not find in him a firm resolution.

walaqad ʿahid'nā ilā ādama min qablu fanasiya walam najid lahu ʿazma

7 The Spiritual Resurrection

وَإِذۡ قُلۡنَا لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ ٱسۡجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ أَبَىٰ ۝١١٦

And when We said to the angels, “Prostrate yourselves for Adam” so they did prostrate themselves except Iblis he refused [out of arrogance].

wa-idh qul'nā lil'malāikati us'judū liādama fasajadū illā ib'līsa ab

فَقُلۡنَا یَـٰۤءَادَمُ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا عَدُوࣱّ لَّكَ وَلِزَوۡجِكَ فَلَا یُخۡرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ فَتَشۡقَىٰۤ ۝١١٧

So We said, “O Adam, this [Iblis] is an enemy for you and for your spouse so beware lest he drives the two of you out of the garden and then you will be in misery.”

faqul'nā yāādamu inna hādhā ʿaduwwun laka walizawjika falā yukh'rijannakumā mina l-janati fatashq

إِنَّ لَكَ أَلَّا تَجُوعَ فِیهَا وَلَا تَعۡرَىٰ ۝١١٨

It is given that in this [garden] you will not go hungry nor naked

inna laka allā tajūʿa fīhā walā taʿr

وَأَنَّكَ لَا تَظۡمَؤُا۟ فِیهَا وَلَا تَضۡحَىٰ ۝١١٩

and nor will you go thirsty therein nor suffer from the sunlight.

wa-annaka lā taẓma-u fīhā walā taḍḥ

فَوَسۡوَسَ إِلَیۡهِ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ قَالَ یَـٰۤءَادَمُ هَلۡ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ وَمُلۡكࣲ لَّا یَبۡلَىٰ ۝١٢٠

So Satan whispered to him he said, “O Adam, may I show you the tree of eternal life and a kingdom that will never decay.”

fawaswasa ilayhi l-shayṭānu qāla yāādamu hal adulluka ʿalā shajarati l-khul'di wamul'kin lā yabl

فَأَكَلَا مِنۡهَا فَبَدَتۡ لَهُمَا سَوۡءَ ٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا یَخۡصِفَانِ عَلَیۡهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۚ وَعَصَىٰۤ ءَادَمُ رَبَّهُۥ فَغَوَىٰ ۝١٢١

So they both ate from it and immediately their stark nakedness became apparent to them and they began to sew around themselves [the covering] from the leaves of the garden and Adam disobeyed His Lord so he became constricted.

fa-akalā min'hā fabadat lahumā sawātuhumā waṭafiqā yakhṣifāni ʿalayhimā min waraqi l-janati waʿaṣā ādamu rabbahu faghaw

ثُمَّ ٱجۡتَبَـٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَتَابَ عَلَیۡهِ وَهَدَىٰ ۝١٢٢

Thereafter his Lord selected him and accepted his repentance and guided [him].

thumma ij'tabāhu rabbuhu fatāba ʿalayhi wahad

قَالَ ٱهۡبِطَا مِنۡهَا جَمِیعَۢاۖ بَعۡضُكُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوࣱّۖ فَإِمَّا یَأۡتِیَنَّكُم مِّنِّی هُدࣰى فَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هُدَایَ فَلَا یَضِلُّ وَلَا یَشۡقَىٰ ۝١٢٣

He said, “Both of you go down from here [the garden] altogether and be [henceforth] enemy unto one another but if ever a guidance comes to you from Me, whosoever follows My guidance, he will not go astray nor will he fall in misery.

qāla ih'biṭā min'hā jamīʿan baʿḍukum libaʿḍin ʿaduwwun fa-immā yatiyannakum minnī hudan famani ittabaʿa hudāya falā yaḍillu walā yashq

وَمَنۡ أَعۡرَضَ عَن ذِكۡرِی فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِیشَةࣰ ضَنكࣰا وَنَحۡشُرُهُۥ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ أَعۡمَىٰ ۝١٢٤

But whoever turns away from My remembrance truly for him shall be a constricted livelihood and We will gather him [unto Us] a blind on the day of resurrection.”

waman aʿraḍa ʿan dhik'rī fa-inna lahu maʿīshatan ḍankan wanaḥshuruhu yawma l-qiyāmati aʿm

قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرۡتَنِیۤ أَعۡمَىٰ وَقَدۡ كُنتُ بَصِیرࣰا ۝١٢٥

He will say [on the day of resurrection], “O My Lord, why have you raised me a blind while I was seeing [in the past life]?”

qāla rabbi lima ḥashartanī aʿmā waqad kuntu baṣīra

قَالَ كَذَ ٰلِكَ أَتَتۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُنَا فَنَسِیتَهَاۖ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُنسَىٰ ۝١٢٦

He will say, “Similarly had Our signs come to you [in the life before] but you forgot them and likewise this day you will be forgotten.”

qāla kadhālika atatka āyātunā fanasītahā wakadhālika l-yawma tuns

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی مَنۡ أَسۡرَفَ وَلَمۡ یُؤۡمِنۢ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِۦۚ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَشَدُّ وَأَبۡقَىٰۤ ۝١٢٧

And thus do We requite one who has transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord and truly the punishment of the hereafter is more severe and more lasting.

wakadhālika najzī man asrafa walam yu'min biāyāti rabbihi walaʿadhābu l-ākhirati ashaddu wa-abq

أَفَلَمۡ یَهۡدِ لَهُمۡ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ یَمۡشُونَ فِی مَسَـٰكِنِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّأُو۟لِی ٱلنُّهَىٰ ۝١٢٨

Have they not found how many generations before them We destroyed and in whose homes they are walking about now. Truly in that indeed are signs for people of understanding.

afalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknā qablahum mina l-qurūni yamshūna fī masākinihim inna fī dhālika laāyātin li-ulī l-nuh

8 Passing away of Opposition

وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةࣱ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَكَانَ لِزَامࣰا وَأَجَلࣱ مُّسَمࣰّى ۝١٢٩

Had it not been for a sentence and a fixed term already passed by Your Lord, a binding punishment [would certainly have befallen them in this life].

walawlā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika lakāna lizāman wa-ajalun musamma

فَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا یَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ قَبۡلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمۡسِ وَقَبۡلَ غُرُوبِهَاۖ وَمِنۡ ءَانَاۤىِٕ ٱلَّیۡلِ فَسَبِّحۡ وَأَطۡرَافَ ٱلنَّهَارِ لَعَلَّكَ تَرۡضَىٰ ۝١٣٠

So bear patience over that which they say and glorify the praise of your Lord before the sunrise and before its setting and in hours of the night praise [Him] and as well as in parts of the day perhaps you will be pleased.

fa-iṣ'bir ʿalā mā yaqūlūna wasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika qabla ṭulūʿi l-shamsi waqabla ghurūbihā wamin ānāi al-layli fasabbiḥ wa-aṭrāfa l-nahāri laʿallaka tarḍ

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَیۡنَیۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ زَهۡرَةَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا لِنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ فِیهِۚ وَرِزۡقُ رَبِّكَ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰ ۝١٣١

And do not stretch your gaze unto that which We have provided to some kinds of them as a temporary enjoyment as a flowering of the life of this world so that We may try them thereby and provision of Your Lord is better and more lasting.

walā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ilā mā mattaʿnā bihi azwājan min'hum zahrata l-ḥayati l-dun'yā linaftinahum fīhi wariz'qu rabbika khayrun wa-abq

وَأۡمُرۡ أَهۡلَكَ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱصۡطَبِرۡ عَلَیۡهَاۖ لَا نَسۡءَلُكَ رِزۡقࣰاۖ نَّحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكَۗ وَٱلۡعَـٰقِبَةُ لِلتَّقۡوَىٰ ۝١٣٢

And command your family to the prayer and be steadfast on it. We do not charge you with providing [for yourself and for them]. We provide for you and the good ending is for those who revere Allah.

wamur ahlaka bil-ṣalati wa-iṣ'ṭabir ʿalayhā lā nasaluka riz'qan naḥnu narzuquka wal-ʿāqibatu lilttaqw

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا یَأۡتِینَا بِءَایَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۤۚ أَوَ لَمۡ تَأۡتِهِم بَیِّنَةُ مَا فِی ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝١٣٣

And they say, “Why does he not bring us a sign from His Lord?” Has not a clarification of all that is in the former books come to them?

waqālū lawlā yatīnā biāyatin min rabbihi awalam tatihim bayyinatu mā fī l-ṣuḥufi l-ūl

وَلَوۡ أَنَّاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم بِعَذَابࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ لَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَوۡلَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡتَ إِلَیۡنَا رَسُولࣰا فَنَتَّبِعَ ءَایَـٰتِكَ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن نَّذِلَّ وَنَخۡزَىٰ ۝١٣٤

And had We destroyed them through a punishment before it [Quran] they would have said, “O Our Lord, if only You had sent unto us a messenger, we would have followed Your signs before we are humiliated and disgraced.”

walaw annā ahlaknāhum biʿadhābin min qablihi laqālū rabbanā lawlā arsalta ilaynā rasūlan fanattabiʿa āyātika min qabli an nadhilla wanakhz

قُلۡ كُلࣱّ مُّتَرَبِّصࣱ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ۖ فَسَتَعۡلَمُونَ مَنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلصِّرَ ٰطِ ٱلسَّوِیِّ وَمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ ۝١٣٥

Say, “Each one [of us] is waiting so wait you [for the final judgment] and you shall soon come to know who is on the path which is even and who is well guided.”

qul kullun mutarabbiṣun fatarabbaṣū fasataʿlamūna man aṣḥābu l-ṣirāṭi l-sawiyi wamani ih'tad
