1 Moses is called

مَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِتَشۡقَىٰۤ ۝٢

We have not sent down the Qur'an for you to be distressed,

mā anzalnā ʿalayka l-qur'āna litashq

إِلَّا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ لِّمَن یَخۡشَىٰ ۝٣

but only as a reminder to all who stand in awe [of God]

illā tadhkiratan liman yakhsh

تَنزِیلࣰا مِّمَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ ٱلۡعُلَى ۝٤

a revelation that was sent down gradually from Him who created the earth and highest heavens,

tanzīlan mimman khalaqa l-arḍa wal-samāwāti l-ʿul

ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ ۝٥

the Merciful-to-all [who is] established on the throne of His majesty.

al-raḥmānu ʿalā l-ʿarshi is'taw

لَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَمَا تَحۡتَ ٱلثَّرَىٰ ۝٦

To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and what is between them, and what is beneath the soil.

lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wamā baynahumā wamā taḥta l-thar

وَإِن تَجۡهَرۡ بِٱلۡقَوۡلِ فَإِنَّهُۥ یَعۡلَمُ ٱلسِّرَّ وَأَخۡفَى ۝٧

Whether or not you speak aloud, He knows what is secret as well as what is [even] more hidden.

wa-in tajhar bil-qawli fa-innahu yaʿlamu l-sira wa-akhf

ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ لَهُ ٱلۡأَسۡمَاۤءُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ ۝٨

God there is no god except Him. All the attributes of perfection belong to Him.

al-lahu lā ilāha illā huwa lahu l-asmāu l-ḥus'n

وَهَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِیثُ مُوسَىٰۤ ۝٩

And has the story of Moses reached you?

wahal atāka ḥadīthu mūs

إِذۡ رَءَا نَارࣰا فَقَالَ لِأَهۡلِهِ ٱمۡكُثُوۤا۟ إِنِّیۤ ءَانَسۡتُ نَارࣰا لَّعَلِّیۤ ءَاتِیكُم مِّنۡهَا بِقَبَسٍ أَوۡ أَجِدُ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ هُدࣰى ۝١٠

When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Wait here. I can see a fire; perhaps I will bring you a piece of it, or maybe I will find guidance there."

idh raā nāran faqāla li-ahlihi um'kuthū innī ānastu nāran laʿallī ātīkum min'hā biqabasin aw ajidu ʿalā l-nāri huda

فَلَمَّاۤ أَتَىٰهَا نُودِیَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ ۝١١

But when he came to the fire, he was called, "Moses,

falammā atāhā nūdiya yāmūs

إِنِّیۤ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكَ فَٱخۡلَعۡ نَعۡلَیۡكَ إِنَّكَ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوࣰى ۝١٢

I am truly your Lord, so remove your sandals. You are in the sacred valley of Tuwa

innī anā rabbuka fa-ikh'laʿ naʿlayka innaka bil-wādi l-muqadasi ṭuwa

وَأَنَا ٱخۡتَرۡتُكَ فَٱسۡتَمِعۡ لِمَا یُوحَىٰۤ ۝١٣

and I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed.

wa-anā ikh'tartuka fa-is'tamiʿ limā yūḥ

إِنَّنِیۤ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّاۤ أَنَا۠ فَٱعۡبُدۡنِی وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكۡرِیۤ ۝١٤

Verily, I am God. There is no God except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer to remember Me.

innanī anā l-lahu lā ilāha illā anā fa-uʿ'bud'nī wa-aqimi l-ṣalata lidhik'r

إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ ءَاتِیَةٌ أَكَادُ أُخۡفِیهَا لِتُجۡزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا تَسۡعَىٰ ۝١٥

The Hour [of Judgment] is coming- though I have chosen to obscure it-when every soul may be rewarded according to its deeds.

inna l-sāʿata ātiyatun akādu ukh'fīhā lituj'zā kullu nafsin bimā tasʿ

فَلَا یَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنۡهَا مَن لَّا یُؤۡمِنُ بِهَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ فَتَرۡدَىٰ ۝١٦

Do not let your focus be diverted from it by anyone who does not believe in its coming and follows his own whim, lest you perish.

falā yaṣuddannaka ʿanhā man lā yu'minu bihā wa-ittabaʿa hawāhu fatard

وَمَا تِلۡكَ بِیَمِینِكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝١٧

[God said] and what is that in your right hand, Moses?"

wamā til'ka biyamīnika yāmūs

قَالَ هِیَ عَصَایَ أَتَوَكَّؤُا۟ عَلَیۡهَا وَأَهُشُّ بِهَا عَلَىٰ غَنَمِی وَلِیَ فِیهَا مَءَارِبُ أُخۡرَىٰ ۝١٨

"It is my staff; I lean upon it, I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have other uses for it."

qāla hiya ʿaṣāya atawakka-u ʿalayhā wa-ahushu bihā ʿalā ghanamī waliya fīhā maāribu ukh'r

قَالَ أَلۡقِهَا یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝١٩

[God said,] "Throw it down, Moses."

qāla alqihā yāmūs

فَأَلۡقَىٰهَا فَإِذَا هِیَ حَیَّةࣱ تَسۡعَىٰ ۝٢٠

So he threw it down, and-behold- it turned into a snake, moving swiftly.

fa-alqāhā fa-idhā hiya ḥayyatun tasʿ

قَالَ خُذۡهَا وَلَا تَخَفۡۖ سَنُعِیدُهَا سِیرَتَهَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٢١

[God] said, "Pick it up and do not be afraid; We will return it to its former condition.

qāla khudh'hā walā takhaf sanuʿīduhā sīratahā l-ūl

وَٱضۡمُمۡ یَدَكَ إِلَىٰ جَنَاحِكَ تَخۡرُجۡ بَیۡضَاۤءَ مِنۡ غَیۡرِ سُوۤءٍ ءَایَةً أُخۡرَىٰ ۝٢٢

Now draw your hand to your side; it will come out white, unharmed - another sign,

wa-uḍ'mum yadaka ilā janāḥika takhruj bayḍāa min ghayri sūin āyatan ukh'r

لِنُرِیَكَ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا ٱلۡكُبۡرَى ۝٢٣

so that We may show you [some] of Our greater signs.

linuriyaka min āyātinā l-kub'r

ٱذۡهَبۡ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ۝٢٤

Go to Pharaoh. He has transgressed all bounds."

idh'hab ilā fir'ʿawna innahu ṭagh

2 Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱشۡرَحۡ لِی صَدۡرِی ۝٢٥

[Moses] said, "My Lord, put my heart at ease

qāla rabbi ish'raḥ lī ṣadr

وَیَسِّرۡ لِیۤ أَمۡرِی ۝٢٦

and ease my task for me

wayassir lī amr

وَٱحۡلُلۡ عُقۡدَةࣰ مِّن لِّسَانِی ۝٢٧

and untie the knot from my tongue

wa-uḥ'lul ʿuq'datan min lisān

یَفۡقَهُوا۟ قَوۡلِی ۝٢٨

so that they may understand my speech,

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی وَزِیرࣰا مِّنۡ أَهۡلِی ۝٢٩

and appoint for me a minister from my family,

wa-ij'ʿal lī wazīran min ahl

هَـٰرُونَ أَخِی ۝٣٠

Aaron, my brother.

ٱشۡدُدۡ بِهِۦۤ أَزۡرِی ۝٣١

Increase my strength through him

ush'dud bihi azr

وَأَشۡرِكۡهُ فِیۤ أَمۡرِی ۝٣٢

and let him share my task

wa-ashrik'hu fī amr

كَیۡ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَثِیرࣰا ۝٣٣

so that we may glorify You much

kay nusabbiḥaka kathīra

وَنَذۡكُرَكَ كَثِیرًا ۝٣٤

and remember You much.

wanadhkuraka kathīra

إِنَّكَ كُنتَ بِنَا بَصِیرࣰا ۝٣٥

You see and know all about us."

innaka kunta binā baṣīra

قَالَ قَدۡ أُوتِیتَ سُؤۡلَكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٣٦

[God] said, "You have been granted your request, Moses.

qāla qad ūtīta su'laka yāmūs

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَیۡكَ مَرَّةً أُخۡرَىٰۤ ۝٣٧

And We have already favored you in a previous time,

walaqad manannā ʿalayka marratan ukh'r

إِذۡ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أُمِّكَ مَا یُوحَىٰۤ ۝٣٨

when We inspired your mother with this:

idh awḥaynā ilā ummika mā yūḥ

أَنِ ٱقۡذِفِیهِ فِی ٱلتَّابُوتِ فَٱقۡذِفِیهِ فِی ٱلۡیَمِّ فَلۡیُلۡقِهِ ٱلۡیَمُّ بِٱلسَّاحِلِ یَأۡخُذۡهُ عَدُوࣱّ لِّی وَعَدُوࣱّ لَّهُۥۚ وَأَلۡقَیۡتُ عَلَیۡكَ مَحَبَّةࣰ مِّنِّی وَلِتُصۡنَعَ عَلَىٰ عَیۡنِیۤ ۝٣٩

"Put him into the chest and cast it into the river. Let the river wash it to the bank, where he will be taken by an enemy of Mine and his." And I bestowed upon you My love, so that you would be brought up under My watchful eye.

ani iq'dhifīhi fī l-tābūti fa-iq'dhifīhi fī l-yami falyul'qihi l-yamu bil-sāḥili yakhudh'hu ʿaduwwun lī waʿaduwwun lahu wa-alqaytu ʿalayka maḥabbatan minnī walituṣ'naʿa ʿalā ʿayn

إِذۡ تَمۡشِیۤ أُخۡتُكَ فَتَقُولُ هَلۡ أَدُلُّكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن یَكۡفُلُهُۥۖ فَرَجَعۡنَـٰكَ إِلَىٰۤ أُمِّكَ كَیۡ تَقَرَّ عَیۡنُهَا وَلَا تَحۡزَنَۚ وَقَتَلۡتَ نَفۡسࣰا فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰكَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَمِّ وَفَتَنَّـٰكَ فُتُونࣰاۚ فَلَبِثۡتَ سِنِینَ فِیۤ أَهۡلِ مَدۡیَنَ ثُمَّ جِئۡتَ عَلَىٰ قَدَرࣲ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٤٠

Then your sister walked by and said, "Shall I direct you to someone who will take care of him?" We returned you to your mother, so that she could rejoice and not grieve. Later, you killed someone, but We rescued you from distress but put you through other severe tests. And you remained some years among the people of Midian. Then you came [here] as I ordained, Moses.

idh tamshī ukh'tuka fataqūlu hal adullukum ʿalā man yakfuluhu farajaʿnāka ilā ummika kay taqarra ʿaynuhā walā taḥzana waqatalta nafsan fanajjaynāka mina l-ghami wafatannāka futūnan falabith'ta sinīna fī ahli madyana thumma ji'ta ʿalā qadarin yāmūs

وَٱصۡطَنَعۡتُكَ لِنَفۡسِی ۝٤١

And I have chosen you for Myself.

wa-iṣ'ṭanaʿtuka linafs

ٱذۡهَبۡ أَنتَ وَأَخُوكَ بِءَایَـٰتِی وَلَا تَنِیَا فِی ذِكۡرِی ۝٤٢

Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not falter in remembering Me.

idh'hab anta wa-akhūka biāyātī walā taniyā fī dhik'r

ٱذۡهَبَاۤ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ۝٤٣

Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. He has overstepped all My limits.

idh'habā ilā fir'ʿawna innahu ṭagh

فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوۡلࣰا لَّیِّنࣰا لَّعَلَّهُۥ یَتَذَكَّرُ أَوۡ یَخۡشَىٰ ۝٤٤

And speak to him gently that perhaps he may remember or fear [God]."

faqūlā lahu qawlan layyinan laʿallahu yatadhakkaru aw yakhsh

قَالَا رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن یَفۡرُطَ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوۡ أَن یَطۡغَىٰ ۝٤٥

They said, "Our Lord, we are afraid that He will quickly do us harm or that he will overstep all boundaries."

qālā rabbanā innanā nakhāfu an yafruṭa ʿalaynā aw an yaṭgh

قَالَ لَا تَخَافَاۤۖ إِنَّنِی مَعَكُمَاۤ أَسۡمَعُ وَأَرَىٰ ۝٤٦

God said, "Fear not. I am with you both; I hear and I see.

qāla lā takhāfā innanī maʿakumā asmaʿu wa-ar

فَأۡتِیَاهُ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولَا رَبِّكَ فَأَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ وَلَا تُعَذِّبۡهُمۡۖ قَدۡ جِئۡنَـٰكَ بِءَایَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكَۖ وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ عَلَىٰ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ ۝٤٧

Go to him and tell him: "We are messengers of your Lord, so send the Children of Israel with us, and do not punish them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace will be upon him who follows His guidance.

fatiyāhu faqūlā innā rasūlā rabbika fa-arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīla walā tuʿadhib'hum qad ji'nāka biāyatin min rabbika wal-salāmu ʿalā mani ittabaʿa l-hud

إِنَّا قَدۡ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡنَاۤ أَنَّ ٱلۡعَذَابَ عَلَىٰ مَن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ۝٤٨

It has been revealed to us that punishment will come upon whoever rejects the truth and turns away."

innā qad ūḥiya ilaynā anna l-ʿadhāba ʿalā man kadhaba watawall

قَالَ فَمَن رَّبُّكُمَا یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٤٩

[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, Moses?"

qāla faman rabbukumā yāmūs

قَالَ رَبُّنَا ٱلَّذِیۤ أَعۡطَىٰ كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ خَلۡقَهُۥ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ ۝٥٠

He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."

qāla rabbunā alladhī aʿṭā kulla shayin khalqahu thumma had

قَالَ فَمَا بَالُ ٱلۡقُرُونِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٥١

[Pharaoh] said, "Then what about the former generations?"

qāla famā bālu l-qurūni l-ūl

قَالَ عِلۡمُهَا عِندَ رَبِّی فِی كِتَـٰبࣲۖ لَّا یَضِلُّ رَبِّی وَلَا یَنسَى ۝٥٢

He said, "Their knowledge is with my Lord in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets."

qāla ʿil'muhā ʿinda rabbī fī kitābin lā yaḍillu rabbī walā yans

ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَهۡدࣰا وَسَلَكَ لَكُمۡ فِیهَا سُبُلࣰا وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا مِّن نَّبَاتࣲ شَتَّىٰ ۝٥٣

It is He who has made the earth as a cradle for you and traced pathways for you through it and sent down rain from the sky, with which We bring forth various kinds of plants

alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa mahdan wasalaka lakum fīhā subulan wa-anzala mina l-samāi māan fa-akhrajnā bihi azwājan min nabātin shatt

كُلُوا۟ وَٱرۡعَوۡا۟ أَنۡعَـٰمَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّأُو۟لِی ٱلنُّهَىٰ ۝٥٤

to eat as well as pasture for your cattle. In this there are signs for intelligent beings.

kulū wa-ir'ʿaw anʿāmakum inna fī dhālika laāyātin li-ulī l-nuh

3 Moses and Enchanters

۞ مِنۡهَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ وَفِیهَا نُعِیدُكُمۡ وَمِنۡهَا نُخۡرِجُكُمۡ تَارَةً أُخۡرَىٰ ۝٥٥

From earth We created you, and to it We will return you, and from it We will bring you forth once again.

min'hā khalaqnākum wafīhā nuʿīdukum wamin'hā nukh'rijukum tāratan ukh'r

وَلَقَدۡ أَرَیۡنَـٰهُ ءَایَـٰتِنَا كُلَّهَا فَكَذَّبَ وَأَبَىٰ ۝٥٦

We certainly showed Pharaoh all of Our signs, but he denied [them] and refused [to believe].

walaqad araynāhu āyātinā kullahā fakadhaba wa-ab

قَالَ أَجِئۡتَنَا لِتُخۡرِجَنَا مِنۡ أَرۡضِنَا بِسِحۡرِكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٥٧

[Pharaoh] said, "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic, Moses?

qāla aji'tanā litukh'rijanā min arḍinā bisiḥ'rika yāmūs

فَلَنَأۡتِیَنَّكَ بِسِحۡرࣲ مِّثۡلِهِۦ فَٱجۡعَلۡ بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَكَ مَوۡعِدࣰا لَّا نُخۡلِفُهُۥ نَحۡنُ وَلَاۤ أَنتَ مَكَانࣰا سُوࣰى ۝٥٨

Then we will surely bring you magic like it. So let's set a time that neither [of us] will fail to keep in a mutually agreed-upon place."

falanatiyannaka bisiḥ'rin mith'lihi fa-ij'ʿal baynanā wabaynaka mawʿidan lā nukh'lifuhu naḥnu walā anta makānan suwa

قَالَ مَوۡعِدُكُمۡ یَوۡمُ ٱلزِّینَةِ وَأَن یُحۡشَرَ ٱلنَّاسُ ضُحࣰى ۝٥٩

[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival, when the people assemble at mid-morning."

qāla mawʿidukum yawmu l-zīnati wa-an yuḥ'shara l-nāsu ḍuḥa

فَتَوَلَّىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فَجَمَعَ كَیۡدَهُۥ ثُمَّ أَتَىٰ ۝٦٠

So Pharaoh turned away, decided on his scheme, and then he returned.

fatawallā fir'ʿawnu fajamaʿa kaydahu thumma at

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰ وَیۡلَكُمۡ لَا تَفۡتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبࣰا فَیُسۡحِتَكُم بِعَذَابࣲۖ وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ ۝٦١

Moses said to the magicians summoned by Pharaoh, "Beware! Do not invent lies against God or He will afflict you with a grievous punishment. He who lies shall fail."

qāla lahum mūsā waylakum lā taftarū ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban fayus'ḥitakum biʿadhābin waqad khāba mani if'tar

فَتَنَـٰزَعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَهُم بَیۡنَهُمۡ وَأَسَرُّوا۟ ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ ۝٦٢

So [the magicians] argued among themselves over their plan but kept their conversation secret.

fatanāzaʿū amrahum baynahum wa-asarrū l-najw

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَ ٰنِ لَسَـٰحِرَ ٰنِ یُرِیدَانِ أَن یُخۡرِجَاكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِمَا وَیَذۡهَبَا بِطَرِیقَتِكُمُ ٱلۡمُثۡلَىٰ ۝٦٣

They said, "these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and to abolish your most exemplary way of life.

qālū in hādhāni lasāḥirāni yurīdāni an yukh'rijākum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihimā wayadhhabā biṭarīqatikumu l-muth'l

فَأَجۡمِعُوا۟ كَیۡدَكُمۡ ثُمَّ ٱئۡتُوا۟ صَفࣰّاۚ وَقَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مَنِ ٱسۡتَعۡلَىٰ ۝٦٤

So gather your resources and line up for the contest. And whoever succeeds today will prosper."

fa-ajmiʿū kaydakum thumma i'tū ṣaffan waqad aflaḥa l-yawma mani is'taʿl

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ إِمَّاۤ أَن تُلۡقِیَ وَإِمَّاۤ أَن نَّكُونَ أَوَّلَ مَنۡ أَلۡقَىٰ ۝٦٥

They said, "Moses, either you throw, or we will be the first to throw."

qālū yāmūsā immā an tul'qiya wa-immā an nakūna awwala man alq

قَالَ بَلۡ أَلۡقُوا۟ۖ فَإِذَا حِبَالُهُمۡ وَعِصِیُّهُمۡ یُخَیَّلُ إِلَیۡهِ مِن سِحۡرِهِمۡ أَنَّهَا تَسۡعَىٰ ۝٦٦

He said, "No, you throw." And, behold! Their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their sorcery to move [like snakes].

qāla bal alqū fa-idhā ḥibāluhum waʿiṣiyyuhum yukhayyalu ilayhi min siḥ'rihim annahā tasʿ

فَأَوۡجَسَ فِی نَفۡسِهِۦ خِیفَةࣰ مُّوسَىٰ ۝٦٧

Moses felt fear within himself

fa-awjasa fī nafsihi khīfatan mūs

قُلۡنَا لَا تَخَفۡ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ ۝٦٨

but, God said, "Have no fear. You will have the upper hand.

qul'nā lā takhaf innaka anta l-aʿl

وَأَلۡقِ مَا فِی یَمِینِكَ تَلۡقَفۡ مَا صَنَعُوۤا۟ۖ إِنَّمَا صَنَعُوا۟ كَیۡدُ سَـٰحِرࣲۖ وَلَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلسَّاحِرُ حَیۡثُ أَتَىٰ ۝٦٩

And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted, for what they have crafted is a magician's trick, and the magician will not succeed in whatever he tries."

wa-alqi mā fī yamīnika talqaf mā ṣanaʿū innamā ṣanaʿū kaydu sāḥirin walā yuf'liḥu l-sāḥiru ḥaythu at

فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سُجَّدࣰا قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ هَـٰرُونَ وَمُوسَىٰ ۝٧٠

[So it was, and] the magicians, fell down in prostration. They said, "We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."

fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sujjadan qālū āmannā birabbi hārūna wamūs

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَۖ فَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ فِی جُذُوعِ ٱلنَّخۡلِ وَلَتَعۡلَمُنَّ أَیُّنَاۤ أَشَدُّ عَذَابࣰا وَأَبۡقَىٰ ۝٧١

[Pharaoh] said, "How dare you believe him before I gave you permission? He must be your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in punishment and more enduring."

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra fala-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum fī judhūʿi l-nakhli walataʿlamunna ayyunā ashaddu ʿadhāban wa-abq

قَالُوا۟ لَن نُّؤۡثِرَكَ عَلَىٰ مَا جَاۤءَنَا مِنَ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِی فَطَرَنَاۖ فَٱقۡضِ مَاۤ أَنتَ قَاضٍۖ إِنَّمَا تَقۡضِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۤ ۝٧٢

They said, "Never will we prefer you over the clear proof that has come to us as nor [over] Him who created us. So, decree whatever you will. You can decree only for this worldly life.

qālū lan nu'thiraka ʿalā mā jāanā mina l-bayināti wa-alladhī faṭaranā fa-iq'ḍi mā anta qāḍin innamā taqḍī hādhihi l-ḥayata l-dun'y

إِنَّاۤ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّنَا لِیَغۡفِرَ لَنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَا وَمَاۤ أَكۡرَهۡتَنَا عَلَیۡهِ مِنَ ٱلسِّحۡرِۗ وَٱللَّهُ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰۤ ۝٧٣

We have believed in our Lord, so that He may forgive us our sins and the magic that you forced us to perform. God is better and more enduring."

innā āmannā birabbinā liyaghfira lanā khaṭāyānā wamā akrahtanā ʿalayhi mina l-siḥ'ri wal-lahu khayrun wa-abq

إِنَّهُۥ مَن یَأۡتِ رَبَّهُۥ مُجۡرِمࣰا فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ جَهَنَّمَ لَا یَمُوتُ فِیهَا وَلَا یَحۡیَىٰ ۝٧٤

Whoever comes to his Lord as an evildoer is destined for Hell where he will neither die nor live.

innahu man yati rabbahu muj'riman fa-inna lahu jahannama lā yamūtu fīhā walā yaḥy

وَمَن یَأۡتِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنࣰا قَدۡ عَمِلَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمُ ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتُ ٱلۡعُلَىٰ ۝٧٥

But whoever comes to Him as a believer, having done righteous deeds will be the highest ranks and

waman yatihi mu'minan qad ʿamila l-ṣāliḥāti fa-ulāika lahumu l-darajātu l-ʿul

جَنَّـٰتُ عَدۡنࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَاۤءُ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ ۝٧٦

Gardens of Eden beneath which rivers flow, where they will dwell eternally. And that is the reward for one who purifies himself.

jannātu ʿadnin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wadhālika jazāu man tazakk

4 Israelites worship Calf

وَلَقَدۡ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِی فَٱضۡرِبۡ لَهُمۡ طَرِیقࣰا فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ یَبَسࣰا لَّا تَخَـٰفُ دَرَكࣰا وَلَا تَخۡشَىٰ ۝٧٧

We revealed to Moses, "Travel by night with My worshipers and strike a dry path through the sea for them, and do not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] or fear [drowning]."

walaqad awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī fa-iḍ'rib lahum ṭarīqan fī l-baḥri yabasan lā takhāfu darakan walā takhsh

فَأَتۡبَعَهُمۡ فِرۡعَوۡنُ بِجُنُودِهِۦ فَغَشِیَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡیَمِّ مَا غَشِیَهُمۡ ۝٧٨

So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and they were utterly overwhelmed by the sea

fa-atbaʿahum fir'ʿawnu bijunūdihi faghashiyahum mina l-yami mā ghashiyahu

وَأَضَلَّ فِرۡعَوۡنُ قَوۡمَهُۥ وَمَا هَدَىٰ ۝٧٩

Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].

wa-aḍalla fir'ʿawnu qawmahu wamā had

یَـٰبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ قَدۡ أَنجَیۡنَـٰكُم مِّنۡ عَدُوِّكُمۡ وَوَ ٰعَدۡنَـٰكُمۡ جَانِبَ ٱلطُّورِ ٱلۡأَیۡمَنَ وَنَزَّلۡنَا عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلۡوَىٰ ۝٨٠

O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a covenant with you on the right side of the mountain, and We repeatedly sent down manna and quail to you,

yābanī is'rāīla qad anjaynākum min ʿaduwwikum wawāʿadnākum jāniba l-ṭūri l-aymana wanazzalnā ʿalaykumu l-mana wal-salw

كُلُوا۟ مِن طَیِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ وَلَا تَطۡغَوۡا۟ فِیهِ فَیَحِلَّ عَلَیۡكُمۡ غَضَبِیۖ وَمَن یَحۡلِلۡ عَلَیۡهِ غَضَبِی فَقَدۡ هَوَىٰ ۝٨١

[saying], "Eat from the good things which We have provided you, but do not abuse them or I will be angry with you. And he with whom I am angry will certainly fall."

kulū min ṭayyibāti mā razaqnākum walā taṭghaw fīhi fayaḥilla ʿalaykum ghaḍabī waman yaḥlil ʿalayhi ghaḍabī faqad haw

وَإِنِّی لَغَفَّارࣱ لِّمَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا ثُمَّ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ ۝٨٢

Yet I am most forgiving towards those who repent, believe, do righteous deeds, and stay on the right path.

wa-innī laghaffārun liman tāba waāmana waʿamila ṣāliḥan thumma ih'tad

۞ وَمَاۤ أَعۡجَلَكَ عَن قَوۡمِكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٨٣

[God] said, "Moses, what made you come in such haste ahead of your people?"

wamā aʿjalaka ʿan qawmika yāmūs

قَالَ هُمۡ أُو۟لَاۤءِ عَلَىٰۤ أَثَرِی وَعَجِلۡتُ إِلَیۡكَ رَبِّ لِتَرۡضَىٰ ۝٨٤

He said, "They are following closely upon my heels, and I rushed to You, my Lord, so that You might be pleased."

qāla hum ulāi ʿalā atharī waʿajil'tu ilayka rabbi litarḍ

قَالَ فَإِنَّا قَدۡ فَتَنَّا قَوۡمَكَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِكَ وَأَضَلَّهُمُ ٱلسَّامِرِیُّ ۝٨٥

[God] said, "But We have tested your people after you [departed], and the Samaritan has led them astray."

qāla fa-innā qad fatannā qawmaka min baʿdika wa-aḍallahumu l-sāmiriy

فَرَجَعَ مُوسَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ غَضۡبَـٰنَ أَسِفࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَلَمۡ یَعِدۡكُمۡ رَبُّكُمۡ وَعۡدًا حَسَنًاۚ أَفَطَالَ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡعَهۡدُ أَمۡ أَرَدتُّمۡ أَن یَحِلَّ عَلَیۡكُمۡ غَضَبࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ فَأَخۡلَفۡتُم مَّوۡعِدِی ۝٨٦

So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "My people, did not your Lord make you a gracious promise? Did the fulfillment [of the covenant] seem too long to you, or did you want the anger of the Lord to fall on you, so you broke your promise to me?"

farajaʿa mūsā ilā qawmihi ghaḍbāna asifan qāla yāqawmi alam yaʿid'kum rabbukum waʿdan ḥasanan afaṭāla ʿalaykumu l-ʿahdu am aradttum an yaḥilla ʿalaykum ghaḍabun min rabbikum fa-akhlaftum mawʿid

قَالُوا۟ مَاۤ أَخۡلَفۡنَا مَوۡعِدَكَ بِمَلۡكِنَا وَلَـٰكِنَّا حُمِّلۡنَاۤ أَوۡزَارࣰا مِّن زِینَةِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ فَقَذَفۡنَـٰهَا فَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَلۡقَى ٱلسَّامِرِیُّ ۝٨٧

They said, "We did not break our promise to you deliberately, but we were weighed down with the heavy burden of the people's jewelry so we threw them [into the fire], following what the Samaritan did."

qālū mā akhlafnā mawʿidaka bimalkinā walākinnā ḥummil'nā awzāran min zīnati l-qawmi faqadhafnāhā fakadhālika alqā l-sāmiriy

فَأَخۡرَجَ لَهُمۡ عِجۡلࣰا جَسَدࣰا لَّهُۥ خُوَارࣱ فَقَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ وَإِلَـٰهُ مُوسَىٰ فَنَسِیَ ۝٨٨

The Samaritan made them [a statue of] a calf, which had a lowing sound, so they said [to each other) , "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he has forgotten [his past]."

fa-akhraja lahum ʿij'lan jasadan lahu khuwārun faqālū hādhā ilāhukum wa-ilāhu mūsā fanasiy

أَفَلَا یَرَوۡنَ أَلَّا یَرۡجِعُ إِلَیۡهِمۡ قَوۡلࣰا وَلَا یَمۡلِكُ لَهُمۡ ضَرࣰّا وَلَا نَفۡعࣰا ۝٨٩

Did they not see that it did not respond to them and that it had no power to either harm or benefit them?

afalā yarawna allā yarjiʿu ilayhim qawlan walā yamliku lahum ḍarran walā nafʿa

5 End of Calf-worship

وَلَقَدۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ هَـٰرُونُ مِن قَبۡلُ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا فُتِنتُم بِهِۦۖ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ فَٱتَّبِعُونِی وَأَطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرِی ۝٩٠

Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "My people, you are only being tested by it, and your Lord is the Merciful-to-all, so follow me and obey my order."

walaqad qāla lahum hārūnu min qablu yāqawmi innamā futintum bihi wa-inna rabbakumu l-raḥmānu fa-ittabiʿūnī wa-aṭīʿū amr

قَالُوا۟ لَن نَّبۡرَحَ عَلَیۡهِ عَـٰكِفِینَ حَتَّىٰ یَرۡجِعَ إِلَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ ۝٩١

They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us."

qālū lan nabraḥa ʿalayhi ʿākifīna ḥattā yarjiʿa ilaynā mūs

قَالَ یَـٰهَـٰرُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذۡ رَأَیۡتَهُمۡ ضَلُّوۤا۟ ۝٩٢

[Moses] said, "Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,

qāla yāhārūnu mā manaʿaka idh ra-aytahum ḍall

أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِۖ أَفَعَصَیۡتَ أَمۡرِی ۝٩٣

from following me? Have you then disobeyed my order?"

allā tattabiʿani afaʿaṣayta amr

قَالَ یَبۡنَؤُمَّ لَا تَأۡخُذۡ بِلِحۡیَتِی وَلَا بِرَأۡسِیۤۖ إِنِّی خَشِیتُ أَن تَقُولَ فَرَّقۡتَ بَیۡنَ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ وَلَمۡ تَرۡقُبۡ قَوۡلِی ۝٩٤

[Aaron] said, "Son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. I feared that you would say, You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not remember my words.' "

qāla yabna-umma lā takhudh biliḥ'yatī walā birasī innī khashītu an taqūla farraqta bayna banī is'rāīla walam tarqub qawl

قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكَ یَـٰسَـٰمِرِیُّ ۝٩٥

[Moses] said, "And what is the matter with you Samaritan?"

qāla famā khaṭbuka yāsāmiriyy

قَالَ بَصُرۡتُ بِمَا لَمۡ یَبۡصُرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَقَبَضۡتُ قَبۡضَةࣰ مِّنۡ أَثَرِ ٱلرَّسُولِ فَنَبَذۡتُهَا وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ سَوَّلَتۡ لِی نَفۡسِی ۝٩٦

He said, "I gained insight into what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the messenger's track and threw it in. This is what my soul tempted me to do."

qāla baṣur'tu bimā lam yabṣurū bihi faqabaḍtu qabḍatan min athari l-rasūli fanabadhtuhā wakadhālika sawwalat lī nafs

قَالَ فَٱذۡهَبۡ فَإِنَّ لَكَ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ أَن تَقُولَ لَا مِسَاسَۖ وَإِنَّ لَكَ مَوۡعِدࣰا لَّن تُخۡلَفَهُۥۖ وَٱنظُرۡ إِلَىٰۤ إِلَـٰهِكَ ٱلَّذِی ظَلۡتَ عَلَیۡهِ عَاكِفࣰاۖ لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُۥ ثُمَّ لَنَنسِفَنَّهُۥ فِی ٱلۡیَمِّ نَسۡفًا ۝٩٧

[Moses] said, "Get out of here. All that you can ask for in this life is not to be physically harmed. But you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. Look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will burn it up and we will scatter its dust into the sea.

qāla fa-idh'hab fa-inna laka fī l-ḥayati an taqūla lā misāsa wa-inna laka mawʿidan lan tukh'lafahu wa-unẓur ilā ilāhika alladhī ẓalta ʿalayhi ʿākifan lanuḥarriqannahu thumma lanansifannahu fī l-yami nasfa

إِنَّمَاۤ إِلَـٰهُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ عِلۡمࣰا ۝٩٨

[People] your true god is God; there is no god but Him. His knowledge encompasses all things. "

innamā ilāhukumu l-lahu alladhī lā ilāha illā huwa wasiʿa kulla shayin ʿil'ma

كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَیۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤءِ مَا قَدۡ سَبَقَۚ وَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰكَ مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكۡرࣰا ۝٩٩

In this way We tell you [Prophet] the news of what has happened before, and We have given you a Reminder directly from Us.

kadhālika naquṣṣu ʿalayka min anbāi mā qad sabaqa waqad ātaynāka min ladunnā dhik'ra

مَّنۡ أَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهُ فَإِنَّهُۥ یَحۡمِلُ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وِزۡرًا ۝١٠٠

Whoever turns away from it will bear a heavy burden on the Day of Resurrection,

man aʿraḍa ʿanhu fa-innahu yaḥmilu yawma l-qiyāmati wiz'ra

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهِۖ وَسَاۤءَ لَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ حِمۡلࣰا ۝١٠١

carrying it eternally. What a terrible burden to carry on the Day of Resurrection.

khālidīna fīhi wasāa lahum yawma l-qiyāmati ḥim'la

یَوۡمَ یُنفَخُ فِی ٱلصُّورِۚ وَنَحۡشُرُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ زُرۡقࣰا ۝١٠٢

On that Day the Horn will be blown and We will gather those who force others to reject Our messages, blinded [with terror].

yawma yunfakhu fī l-ṣūri wanaḥshuru l-muj'rimīna yawma-idhin zur'qa

یَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا عَشۡرࣰا ۝١٠٣

and they will whisper to each other, "You have spent only ten [days]."

yatakhāfatūna baynahum in labith'tum illā ʿashra

نَّحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا یَقُولُونَ إِذۡ یَقُولُ أَمۡثَلُهُمۡ طَرِیقَةً إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا یَوۡمࣰا ۝١٠٤

We know best what they will say when the most perceptive [among them] will say, "[In fact] you have spent only one day."

naḥnu aʿlamu bimā yaqūlūna idh yaqūlu amthaluhum ṭarīqatan in labith'tum illā yawma

6 The Prophet's Opponents

وَیَسۡءَلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡجِبَالِ فَقُلۡ یَنسِفُهَا رَبِّی نَسۡفࣰا ۝١٠٥

And [should] they ask you [Prophet] about the mountains, say, "My Lord will blow them away into dust

wayasalūnaka ʿani l-jibāli faqul yansifuhā rabbī nasfa

فَیَذَرُهَا قَاعࣰا صَفۡصَفࣰا ۝١٠٦

and He will level them into empty plains;

fayadharuhā qāʿan ṣafṣafa

لَّا تَرَىٰ فِیهَا عِوَجࣰا وَلَاۤ أَمۡتࣰا ۝١٠٧

where you will not see a dip or an elevation."

lā tarā fīhā ʿiwajan walā amta

یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلدَّاعِیَ لَا عِوَجَ لَهُۥۖ وَخَشَعَتِ ٱلۡأَصۡوَاتُ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ فَلَا تَسۡمَعُ إِلَّا هَمۡسࣰا ۝١٠٨

On that Day, everyone will follow the Caller from whom there is no escape. Then, all voices will be quieted before the Merciful-to-all and only whispers will be heard.

yawma-idhin yattabiʿūna l-dāʿiya lā ʿiwaja lahu wakhashaʿati l-aṣwātu lilrraḥmāni falā tasmaʿu illā hamsa

یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لَّا تَنفَعُ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ إِلَّا مَنۡ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ وَرَضِیَ لَهُۥ قَوۡلࣰا ۝١٠٩

On that Day, no intercession will be of value except from one to whom the Merciful-to-all has given permission and was pleased with his speech.

yawma-idhin lā tanfaʿu l-shafāʿatu illā man adhina lahu l-raḥmānu waraḍiya lahu qawla

یَعۡلَمُ مَا بَیۡنَ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَمَا خَلۡفَهُمۡ وَلَا یُحِیطُونَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣰا ۝١١٠

God knows what is before them and what will be after them, but they cannot contain Him with their knowledge.

yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wamā khalfahum walā yuḥīṭūna bihi ʿil'ma

۞ وَعَنَتِ ٱلۡوُجُوهُ لِلۡحَیِّ ٱلۡقَیُّومِۖ وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنۡ حَمَلَ ظُلۡمࣰا ۝١١١

And [on that day all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he who bears injustice will despair.

waʿanati l-wujūhu lil'ḥayyi l-qayūmi waqad khāba man ḥamala ẓul'ma

وَمَن یَعۡمَلۡ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنࣱ فَلَا یَخَافُ ظُلۡمࣰا وَلَا هَضۡمࣰا ۝١١٢

But he who does righteous deeds while he is a believer he will fear neither injustice nor deprivation.

waman yaʿmal mina l-ṣāliḥāti wahuwa mu'minun falā yakhāfu ẓul'man walā haḍma

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَانًا عَرَبِیࣰّا وَصَرَّفۡنَا فِیهِ مِنَ ٱلۡوَعِیدِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَّقُونَ أَوۡ یُحۡدِثُ لَهُمۡ ذِكۡرࣰا ۝١١٣

And thus We have sent down [this revelation] as a perfect Arabic Qur'an and have given warnings that perhaps they will remain mindful of Us, or that it might give them a new awareness.

wakadhālika anzalnāhu qur'ānan ʿarabiyyan waṣarrafnā fīhi mina l-waʿīdi laʿallahum yattaqūna aw yuḥ'dithu lahum dhik'ra

فَتَعَـٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمَلِكُ ٱلۡحَقُّۗ وَلَا تَعۡجَلۡ بِٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یُقۡضَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكَ وَحۡیُهُۥۖ وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدۡنِی عِلۡمࣰا ۝١١٤

Know then, that God, the Ultimate Sovereign, the Ultimate Truth is So exalted. [Prophet] do not rush ahead with the Qur'an before its revelation to you is complete, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."

fataʿālā l-lahu l-maliku l-ḥaqu walā taʿjal bil-qur'āni min qabli an yuq'ḍā ilayka waḥyuhu waqul rabbi zid'nī ʿil'ma

وَلَقَدۡ عَهِدۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ ءَادَمَ مِن قَبۡلُ فَنَسِیَ وَلَمۡ نَجِدۡ لَهُۥ عَزۡمࣰا ۝١١٥

And We had already made a covenant with Adam, but he forgot [it]; and We found him lacking in steadfastness.

walaqad ʿahid'nā ilā ādama min qablu fanasiya walam najid lahu ʿazma

7 The Spiritual Resurrection

وَإِذۡ قُلۡنَا لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ ٱسۡجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ أَبَىٰ ۝١١٦

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Bow down before Adam," and they bowed, except Iblis; he refused.

wa-idh qul'nā lil'malāikati us'judū liādama fasajadū illā ib'līsa ab

فَقُلۡنَا یَـٰۤءَادَمُ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا عَدُوࣱّ لَّكَ وَلِزَوۡجِكَ فَلَا یُخۡرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ فَتَشۡقَىٰۤ ۝١١٧

So We said, "O Adam, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Do not let him drive you out of the Garden and make you suffer.

faqul'nā yāādamu inna hādhā ʿaduwwun laka walizawjika falā yukh'rijannakumā mina l-janati fatashq

إِنَّ لَكَ أَلَّا تَجُوعَ فِیهَا وَلَا تَعۡرَىٰ ۝١١٨

In the Garden you will never go hungry or go naked,

inna laka allā tajūʿa fīhā walā taʿr

وَأَنَّكَ لَا تَظۡمَؤُا۟ فِیهَا وَلَا تَضۡحَىٰ ۝١١٩

nor will you go thirsty or suffer the heat of the sun."

wa-annaka lā taẓma-u fīhā walā taḍḥ

فَوَسۡوَسَ إِلَیۡهِ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ قَالَ یَـٰۤءَادَمُ هَلۡ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ وَمُلۡكࣲ لَّا یَبۡلَىٰ ۝١٢٠

Then Satan whispered to him, saying, "Adam, shall I show you the tree of immortality and a kingdom that will never decay?"

fawaswasa ilayhi l-shayṭānu qāla yāādamu hal adulluka ʿalā shajarati l-khul'di wamul'kin lā yabl

فَأَكَلَا مِنۡهَا فَبَدَتۡ لَهُمَا سَوۡءَ ٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا یَخۡصِفَانِ عَلَیۡهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۚ وَعَصَىٰۤ ءَادَمُ رَبَّهُۥ فَغَوَىٰ ۝١٢١

And they both ate from it, so that their nakedness became apparent to them, and they began to cover themselves with the leaves from the Garden. Adam disobeyed his Lord and was led astray.

fa-akalā min'hā fabadat lahumā sawātuhumā waṭafiqā yakhṣifāni ʿalayhimā min waraqi l-janati waʿaṣā ādamu rabbahu faghaw

ثُمَّ ٱجۡتَبَـٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَتَابَ عَلَیۡهِ وَهَدَىٰ ۝١٢٢

But later, his Lord chose to bring him closer, accepted his repentance, and guided him.

thumma ij'tabāhu rabbuhu fatāba ʿalayhi wahad

قَالَ ٱهۡبِطَا مِنۡهَا جَمِیعَۢاۖ بَعۡضُكُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوࣱّۖ فَإِمَّا یَأۡتِیَنَّكُم مِّنِّی هُدࣰى فَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هُدَایَ فَلَا یَضِلُّ وَلَا یَشۡقَىٰ ۝١٢٣

[God] said, "Go down from it, all of you, as enemies to one another. But when guidance comes to you from Me, then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in this world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].

qāla ih'biṭā min'hā jamīʿan baʿḍukum libaʿḍin ʿaduwwun fa-immā yatiyannakum minnī hudan famani ittabaʿa hudāya falā yaḍillu walā yashq

وَمَنۡ أَعۡرَضَ عَن ذِكۡرِی فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِیشَةࣰ ضَنكࣰا وَنَحۡشُرُهُۥ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ أَعۡمَىٰ ۝١٢٤

But whoever turns away from remembering Me, he will have a life of great hardship, and We will raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection."

waman aʿraḍa ʿan dhik'rī fa-inna lahu maʿīshatan ḍankan wanaḥshuruhu yawma l-qiyāmati aʿm

قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرۡتَنِیۤ أَعۡمَىٰ وَقَدۡ كُنتُ بَصِیرࣰا ۝١٢٥

He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind whereas I was able to see before?"

qāla rabbi lima ḥashartanī aʿmā waqad kuntu baṣīra

قَالَ كَذَ ٰلِكَ أَتَتۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُنَا فَنَسِیتَهَاۖ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُنسَىٰ ۝١٢٦

[God] will say, "Just as Our Signs came to you and you forgot them, in the same way, you too will this Day will be forgotten."

qāla kadhālika atatka āyātunā fanasītahā wakadhālika l-yawma tuns

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی مَنۡ أَسۡرَفَ وَلَمۡ یُؤۡمِنۢ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِۦۚ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَشَدُّ وَأَبۡقَىٰۤ ۝١٢٧

This is how We repay him who goes too far and does not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.

wakadhālika najzī man asrafa walam yu'min biāyāti rabbihi walaʿadhābu l-ākhirati ashaddu wa-abq

أَفَلَمۡ یَهۡدِ لَهُمۡ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ یَمۡشُونَ فِی مَسَـٰكِنِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّأُو۟لِی ٱلنُّهَىٰ ۝١٢٨

Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose ruined dwellings they now walk? There are signs in this for those with understanding.

afalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknā qablahum mina l-qurūni yamshūna fī masākinihim inna fī dhālika laāyātin li-ulī l-nuh

8 Passing away of Opposition

وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةࣱ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَكَانَ لِزَامࣰا وَأَجَلࣱ مُّسَمࣰّى ۝١٢٩

And were it not for a prior word from your Lord, setting an appointed term, [their punishment] would necessarily have come immediately.

walawlā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika lakāna lizāman wa-ajalun musamma

فَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا یَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ قَبۡلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمۡسِ وَقَبۡلَ غُرُوبِهَاۖ وَمِنۡ ءَانَاۤىِٕ ٱلَّیۡلِ فَسَبِّحۡ وَأَطۡرَافَ ٱلنَّهَارِ لَعَلَّكَ تَرۡضَىٰ ۝١٣٠

So [Prophet] be patient with what they say and exalt your Lord's limitless glory and praise Him before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and exalt His limitless glory during periods of the night and the day, so that you may be content.

fa-iṣ'bir ʿalā mā yaqūlūna wasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika qabla ṭulūʿi l-shamsi waqabla ghurūbihā wamin ānāi al-layli fasabbiḥ wa-aṭrāfa l-nahāri laʿallaka tarḍ

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَیۡنَیۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ زَهۡرَةَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا لِنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ فِیهِۚ وَرِزۡقُ رَبِّكَ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰ ۝١٣١

And do not gaze longingly toward what We have given some of them to enjoy, [it is merely] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them, but the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.

walā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ilā mā mattaʿnā bihi azwājan min'hum zahrata l-ḥayati l-dun'yā linaftinahum fīhi wariz'qu rabbika khayrun wa-abq

وَأۡمُرۡ أَهۡلَكَ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱصۡطَبِرۡ عَلَیۡهَاۖ لَا نَسۡءَلُكَ رِزۡقࣰاۖ نَّحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكَۗ وَٱلۡعَـٰقِبَةُ لِلتَّقۡوَىٰ ۝١٣٢

Order your people to pray and be steadfast yourself. We are not asking you for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] end [comes through] being mindful of God.

wamur ahlaka bil-ṣalati wa-iṣ'ṭabir ʿalayhā lā nasaluka riz'qan naḥnu narzuquka wal-ʿāqibatu lilttaqw

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا یَأۡتِینَا بِءَایَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۤۚ أَوَ لَمۡ تَأۡتِهِم بَیِّنَةُ مَا فِی ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝١٣٣

And they say, "If he would only bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has not clear evidence come to them in the earlier texts?

waqālū lawlā yatīnā biāyatin min rabbihi awalam tatihim bayyinatu mā fī l-ṣuḥufi l-ūl

وَلَوۡ أَنَّاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم بِعَذَابࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ لَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَوۡلَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡتَ إِلَیۡنَا رَسُولࣰا فَنَتَّبِعَ ءَایَـٰتِكَ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن نَّذِلَّ وَنَخۡزَىٰ ۝١٣٤

And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before this, they would have said, "Our Lord, if You had only sent us a messenger, we could have followed Your signs before we were humiliated and disgraced."

walaw annā ahlaknāhum biʿadhābin min qablihi laqālū rabbanā lawlā arsalta ilaynā rasūlan fanattabiʿa āyātika min qabli an nadhilla wanakhz

قُلۡ كُلࣱّ مُّتَرَبِّصࣱ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ۖ فَسَتَعۡلَمُونَ مَنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلصِّرَ ٰطِ ٱلسَّوِیِّ وَمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ ۝١٣٥

Say, "Each is expectantly waiting; so wait with your expectations. For you will eventually know who is on the path of equity and who is rightly guided."

qul kullun mutarabbiṣun fatarabbaṣū fasataʿlamūna man aṣḥābu l-ṣirāṭi l-sawiyi wamani ih'tad
