1 Obedience to Allah

تَنزِیلُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡحَكِیمِ ۝١

N J Dawood 2014

THE REVELATION of the Book is from God, the Almighty, the Wise One

tanzīlu l-kitābi mina l-lahi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥakīm

إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ فَٱعۡبُدِ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصࣰا لَّهُ ٱلدِّینَ ۝٢

N J Dawood 2014

We have revealed to you the Book with the Truth: therefore worship God, consecrating your religion to Him

innā anzalnā ilayka l-kitāba bil-ḥaqi fa-uʿ'budi l-laha mukh'liṣan lahu l-dīn

أَلَا لِلَّهِ ٱلدِّینُ ٱلۡخَالِصُۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ مَا نَعۡبُدُهُمۡ إِلَّا لِیُقَرِّبُونَاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ زُلۡفَىٰۤ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَهُمۡ فِی مَا هُمۡ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی مَنۡ هُوَ كَـٰذِبࣱ كَفَّارࣱ ۝٣

Is it not to God that True Religion belongs? As for those who set up other patrons¹ besides Him, saying: ‘We serve them only that they may bring us nearer to God,‘ God Himself will resolve their differences for them. God does not guide the disbelieving liar

alā lillahi l-dīnu l-khāliṣu wa-alladhīna ittakhadhū min dūnihi awliyāa mā naʿbuduhum illā liyuqarribūnā ilā l-lahi zul'fā inna l-laha yaḥkumu baynahum fī mā hum fīhi yakhtalifūna inna l-laha lā yahdī man huwa kādhibun kaffāru

لَّوۡ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ أَن یَتَّخِذَ وَلَدࣰا لَّٱصۡطَفَىٰ مِمَّا یَخۡلُقُ مَا یَشَاۤءُۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥۖ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡوَ ٰحِدُ ٱلۡقَهَّارُ ۝٤

Had it been God‘s will to adopt a son, He would have chosen whom He pleased out of His own Creation. Exalted be He! He is God, the One, who vanquishes all

law arāda l-lahu an yattakhidha waladan la-iṣ'ṭafā mimmā yakhluqu mā yashāu sub'ḥānahu huwa l-lahu l-wāḥidu l-qahār

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ یُكَوِّرُ ٱلَّیۡلَ عَلَى ٱلنَّهَارِ وَیُكَوِّرُ ٱلنَّهَارَ عَلَى ٱلَّیۡلِۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ كُلࣱّ یَجۡرِی لِأَجَلࣲ مُّسَمًّىۗ أَلَا هُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡغَفَّـٰرُ ۝٥

It was with Truth that He created the heavens and the earth. He causes the night to succeed the day and causes the day to overtake the night. He made the sun and the moon subservient to Him, each running for an appointed term. He is surely the Almighty the Forgiving One

khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi yukawwiru al-layla ʿalā l-nahāri wayukawwiru l-nahāra ʿalā al-layli wasakhara l-shamsa wal-qamara kullun yajrī li-ajalin musamman alā huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ghafār

خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفۡسࣲ وَ ٰحِدَةࣲ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنۡهَا زَوۡجَهَا وَأَنزَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ ثَمَـٰنِیَةَ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣲۚ یَخۡلُقُكُمۡ فِی بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡ خَلۡقࣰا مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ خَلۡقࣲ فِی ظُلُمَـٰتࣲ ثَلَـٰثࣲۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡ لَهُ ٱلۡمُلۡكُۖ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُصۡرَفُونَ ۝٦

N J Dawood 2014

He created you from a single soul, then from it He created its spouse. He has sent down to you four different pairs of cattle.¹ He moulds you in your mothers‘ wombs by stages in threefold darkness. Such is God, your Lord. His is the sovereignty; there is no god but Him. How, then, can you be turned away from Him

khalaqakum min nafsin wāḥidatin thumma jaʿala min'hā zawjahā wa-anzala lakum mina l-anʿāmi thamāniyata azwājin yakhluqukum fī buṭūni ummahātikum khalqan min baʿdi khalqin fī ẓulumātin thalāthin dhālikumu l-lahu rabbukum lahu l-mul'ku lā ilāha illā huwa fa-annā tuṣ'rafūn

إِن تَكۡفُرُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِیٌّ عَنكُمۡۖ وَلَا یَرۡضَىٰ لِعِبَادِهِ ٱلۡكُفۡرَۖ وَإِن تَشۡكُرُوا۟ یَرۡضَهُ لَكُمۡۗ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةࣱ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُم مَّرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَیُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝٧

If you render Him no thanks, God does not need you; yet His servants‘ ingratitude does not please Him; if you are thankful, your thanks will please Him. No burdened soul shall bear another‘s burden. To your Lord shall you then return and He will declare to you what you have done. He well knows one‘s innermost thoughts

in takfurū fa-inna l-laha ghaniyyun ʿankum walā yarḍā liʿibādihi l-kuf'ra wa-in tashkurū yarḍahu lakum walā taziru wāziratun wiz'ra ukh'rā thumma ilā rabbikum marjiʿukum fayunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūna innahu ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

۞ وَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ ضُرࣱّ دَعَا رَبَّهُۥ مُنِیبًا إِلَیۡهِ ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلَهُۥ نِعۡمَةࣰ مِّنۡهُ نَسِیَ مَا كَانَ یَدۡعُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ مِن قَبۡلُ وَجَعَلَ لِلَّهِ أَندَادࣰا لِّیُضِلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦۚ قُلۡ تَمَتَّعۡ بِكُفۡرِكَ قَلِیلًا إِنَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلنَّارِ ۝٨

When evil befalls man, he prays to his Lord and turns to Him in penitence; yet no sooner does He bestow on him His favour than he forgets what he has prayed for and makes other deities God‘s equals, in order to lead men away from His path. Say: ‘Enjoy your unbelief awhile; but you shall be among the tenants of the Fire

wa-idhā massa l-insāna ḍurrun daʿā rabbahu munīban ilayhi thumma idhā khawwalahu niʿ'matan min'hu nasiya mā kāna yadʿū ilayhi min qablu wajaʿala lillahi andādan liyuḍilla ʿan sabīlihi qul tamattaʿ bikuf'rika qalīlan innaka min aṣḥābi l-nār

أَمَّنۡ هُوَ قَـٰنِتٌ ءَانَاۤءَ ٱلَّیۡلِ سَاجِدࣰا وَقَاۤىِٕمࣰا یَحۡذَرُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ وَیَرۡجُوا۟ رَحۡمَةَ رَبِّهِۦۗ قُلۡ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوِی ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡلَمُونَ وَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَۗ إِنَّمَا یَتَذَكَّرُ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝٩

Can he who passes the night in adoration, standing or on his knees, who bewares the life to come and hopes to earn the mercy of his Lord, . . . ?‘ Say: ‘Are they equals, those that have knowledge and those that have none?‘ Truly, none will take thought but those that are of good sense possessed

amman huwa qānitun ānāa al-layli sājidan waqāiman yaḥdharu l-ākhirata wayarjū raḥmata rabbihi qul hal yastawī alladhīna yaʿlamūna wa-alladhīna lā yaʿlamūna innamā yatadhakkaru ulū l-albāb

2 Believers and Disbelievers

قُلۡ یَـٰعِبَادِ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡۚ لِلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣱۗ وَأَرۡضُ ٱللَّهِ وَ ٰسِعَةٌۗ إِنَّمَا یُوَفَّى ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ أَجۡرَهُم بِغَیۡرِ حِسَابࣲ ۝١٠

N J Dawood 2014

Say: ‘You, My servants, that are true believers, fear your Lord. Those who do good in this life shall receive a good reward. God‘s earth is vast. But those that endure with fortitude He will recompense without reckoning.‘

qul yāʿibādi alladhīna āmanū ittaqū rabbakum lilladhīna aḥsanū fī hādhihi l-dun'yā ḥasanatun wa-arḍu l-lahi wāsiʿatun innamā yuwaffā l-ṣābirūna ajrahum bighayri ḥisābi

قُلۡ إِنِّیۤ أُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَعۡبُدَ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصࣰا لَّهُ ٱلدِّینَ ۝١١

Say; ‘I am commanded to worship God, consecrating my religion to Him

qul innī umir'tu an aʿbuda l-laha mukh'liṣan lahu l-dīn

وَأُمِرۡتُ لِأَنۡ أَكُونَ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝١٢

I am commanded to be the first of Muslims.‘

wa-umir'tu li-an akūna awwala l-mus'limīn

قُلۡ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ إِنۡ عَصَیۡتُ رَبِّی عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣

Say: ‘I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the torment of a fateful day

qul innī akhāfu in ʿaṣaytu rabbī ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قُلِ ٱللَّهَ أَعۡبُدُ مُخۡلِصࣰا لَّهُۥ دِینِی ۝١٤

Say: ‘God I worship, consecrating my religion to Him

quli l-laha aʿbudu mukh'liṣan lahu dīn

فَٱعۡبُدُوا۟ مَا شِئۡتُم مِّن دُونِهِۦۗ قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَأَهۡلِیهِمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ أَلَا ذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡخُسۡرَانُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٥

As for yourselves, worship what you will besides Him.‘ Say: ‘They shall lose much, those who will forfeit their souls and their kin on the Day of Resurrection. That will surely be the ultimate loss

fa-uʿ'budū mā shi'tum min dūnihi qul inna l-khāsirīna alladhīna khasirū anfusahum wa-ahlīhim yawma l-qiyāmati alā dhālika huwa l-khus'rānu l-mubīn

لَهُم مِّن فَوۡقِهِمۡ ظُلَلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ وَمِن تَحۡتِهِمۡ ظُلَلࣱۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ یُخَوِّفُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦ عِبَادَهُۥۚ یَـٰعِبَادِ فَٱتَّقُونِ ۝١٦

N J Dawood 2014

Above them there shall be sheets of fire, and sheets of fire shall be beneath them. By this, God puts fear into His servants‘ hearts.‘ Fear Me, then, My servants

lahum min fawqihim ẓulalun mina l-nāri wamin taḥtihim ẓulalun dhālika yukhawwifu l-lahu bihi ʿibādahu yāʿibādi fa-ittaqūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ ٱجۡتَنَبُوا۟ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ أَن یَعۡبُدُوهَا وَأَنَابُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ لَهُمُ ٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰۚ فَبَشِّرۡ عِبَادِ ۝١٧

N J Dawood 2014

But those who keep from idol-worship and turn to God in penitence shall rejoice; give joyful tidings to My servant

wa-alladhīna ij'tanabū l-ṭāghūta an yaʿbudūhā wa-anābū ilā l-lahi lahumu l-bush'rā fabashir ʿibād

ٱلَّذِینَ یَسۡتَمِعُونَ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ فَیَتَّبِعُونَ أَحۡسَنَهُۥۤۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ هَدَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمۡ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝١٨

who listen to precepts and follow what is best in them. It is these whom God has guided; it is these that are of good sense possessed

alladhīna yastamiʿūna l-qawla fayattabiʿūna aḥsanahu ulāika alladhīna hadāhumu l-lahu wa-ulāika hum ulū l-albāb

أَفَمَنۡ حَقَّ عَلَیۡهِ كَلِمَةُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ أَفَأَنتَ تُنقِذُ مَن فِی ٱلنَّارِ ۝١٩

Can you rescue from the Fire those on whom the Word of torment was pronounced

afaman ḥaqqa ʿalayhi kalimatu l-ʿadhābi afa-anta tunqidhu man fī l-nār

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ رَبَّهُمۡ لَهُمۡ غُرَفࣱ مِّن فَوۡقِهَا غُرَفࣱ مَّبۡنِیَّةࣱ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُۖ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ لَا یُخۡلِفُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمِیعَادَ ۝٢٠

As for those who truly fear their Lord, they shall be lodged in mansions towering high, set about with running brooks. Such is God‘s promise: God never fails His promise.

lākini alladhīna ittaqaw rabbahum lahum ghurafun min fawqihā ghurafun mabniyyatun tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru waʿda l-lahi lā yukh'lifu l-lahu l-mīʿād

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَسَلَكَهُۥ یَنَـٰبِیعَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ثُمَّ یُخۡرِجُ بِهِۦ زَرۡعࣰا مُّخۡتَلِفًا أَلۡوَ ٰنُهُۥ ثُمَّ یَهِیجُ فَتَرَىٰهُ مُصۡفَرࣰّا ثُمَّ یَجۡعَلُهُۥ حُطَـٰمًاۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَذِكۡرَىٰ لِأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝٢١

N J Dawood 2014

Do you not see how God sends down water from the sky which penetrates the earth and gathers in springs beneath? With it He then brings forth plants of various hues. They wither, they turn yellow, and then He turns them into dust. Surely in this there is an admonition for those that are of good sense possessed

alam tara anna l-laha anzala mina l-samāi māan fasalakahu yanābīʿa fī l-arḍi thumma yukh'riju bihi zarʿan mukh'talifan alwānuhu thumma yahīju fatarāhu muṣ'farran thumma yajʿaluhu ḥuṭāman inna fī dhālika ladhik'rā li-ulī l-albāb

3 A Perfect Guidance

أَفَمَن شَرَحَ ٱللَّهُ صَدۡرَهُۥ لِلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِ فَهُوَ عَلَىٰ نُورࣲ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۚ فَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلۡقَـٰسِیَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مِّن ذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٢٢

He whose bosom God has opened to Islām shall receive light from his Lord. But woe betide those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of God! They are in evident error

afaman sharaḥa l-lahu ṣadrahu lil'is'lāmi fahuwa ʿalā nūrin min rabbihi fawaylun lil'qāsiyati qulūbuhum min dhik'ri l-lahi ulāika fī ḍalālin mubīni

ٱللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡحَدِیثِ كِتَـٰبࣰا مُّتَشَـٰبِهࣰا مَّثَانِیَ تَقۡشَعِرُّ مِنۡهُ جُلُودُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَخۡشَوۡنَ رَبَّهُمۡ ثُمَّ تَلِینُ جُلُودُهُمۡ وَقُلُوبُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ ذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُدَى ٱللَّهِ یَهۡدِی بِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنۡ هَادٍ ۝٢٣

God has now revealed the best of Scriptures, a Book uniform in style proclaiming promises and warnings. Those who fear their Lord tremble with awe at its revelations, and their skins and hearts melt at the remembrance of God. Such is God‘s guidance: He guides whom He will. But he whom God confounds shall have none to guide him

al-lahu nazzala aḥsana l-ḥadīthi kitāban mutashābihan mathāniya taqshaʿirru min'hu julūdu alladhīna yakhshawna rabbahum thumma talīnu julūduhum waqulūbuhum ilā dhik'ri l-lahi dhālika hudā l-lahi yahdī bihi man yashāu waman yuḍ'lili l-lahu famā lahu min hādi

أَفَمَن یَتَّقِی بِوَجۡهِهِۦ سُوۤءَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ وَقِیلَ لِلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٢٤

Can he who with his face strives to ward off the terrors of the Resurrection . . . ? And wrongdoers will be told: ‘Taste the punishment which you have earned.‘

afaman yattaqī biwajhihi sūa l-ʿadhābi yawma l-qiyāmati waqīla lilẓẓālimīna dhūqū mā kuntum taksibūn

كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ فَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٥

Those who have gone before them also disbelieved, so that the scourge overtook them unawares

kadhaba alladhīna min qablihim fa-atāhumu l-ʿadhābu min ḥaythu lā yashʿurūn

فَأَذَاقَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخِزۡیَ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٦

God made them taste dishonour in this life, but the punishment of the life to come shall be more terrible, if they but knew it

fa-adhāqahumu l-lahu l-khiz'ya fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā walaʿadhābu l-ākhirati akbaru law kānū yaʿlamūn

وَلَقَدۡ ضَرَبۡنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِی هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلࣲ لَّعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٧

We have given mankind in this Koran all manner of parables, that they may take thought

walaqad ḍarabnā lilnnāsi fī hādhā l-qur'āni min kulli mathalin laʿallahum yatadhakkarūn

قُرۡءَانًا عَرَبِیًّا غَیۡرَ ذِی عِوَجࣲ لَّعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَّقُونَ ۝٢٨

a Koran in the Arabic tongue, free from any flaw, that they may fear God

qur'ānan ʿarabiyyan ghayra dhī ʿiwajin laʿallahum yattaqūn

ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلࣰا رَّجُلࣰا فِیهِ شُرَكَاۤءُ مُتَشَـٰكِسُونَ وَرَجُلࣰا سَلَمࣰا لِّرَجُلٍ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوِیَانِ مَثَلًاۚ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٩

God makes this comparison: a man who has many masters who are ever at odds among themselves; and a man devoted to one master. Are they to be held equal? God be praised! But most of them have no knowledge

ḍaraba l-lahu mathalan rajulan fīhi shurakāu mutashākisūna warajulan salaman lirajulin hal yastawiyāni mathalan l-ḥamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūn

إِنَّكَ مَیِّتࣱ وَإِنَّهُم مَّیِّتُونَ ۝٣٠

You¹ are doomed to die, and they are doomed to die

innaka mayyitun wa-innahum mayyitūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمۡ تَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٣١

Then, on the Day of Resurrection, in your Lord‘s presence you² shall still dispute

thumma innakum yawma l-qiyāmati ʿinda rabbikum takhtaṣimūn

4 Rejectors will be abased

۞ فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن كَذَبَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلصِّدۡقِ إِذۡ جَاۤءَهُۥۤۚ أَلَیۡسَ فِی جَهَنَّمَ مَثۡوࣰى لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٣٢

N J Dawood 2014

So who is more wicked than he who invents a falsehood about God and denies the Truth when it is declared to him? Is there not a home in Hell for the unbelievers

faman aẓlamu mimman kadhaba ʿalā l-lahi wakadhaba bil-ṣid'qi idh jāahu alaysa fī jahannama mathwan lil'kāfirīn

وَٱلَّذِی جَاۤءَ بِٱلصِّدۡقِ وَصَدَّقَ بِهِۦۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَ ۝٣٣

Those who proclaim the Truth, and those who give credence to it ― they surely are the God-fearing

wa-alladhī jāa bil-ṣid'qi waṣaddaqa bihi ulāika humu l-mutaqūn

لَهُم مَّا یَشَاۤءُونَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَاۤءُ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٣٤

Their Lord will give them all that they desire. Thus shall the righteous be rewarded

lahum mā yashāūna ʿinda rabbihim dhālika jazāu l-muḥ'sinīn

لِیُكَفِّرَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ أَسۡوَأَ ٱلَّذِی عَمِلُوا۟ وَیَجۡزِیَهُمۡ أَجۡرَهُم بِأَحۡسَنِ ٱلَّذِی كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٥

God will expunge their foulest deeds and reward them according to their noblest actions

liyukaffira l-lahu ʿanhum aswa-a alladhī ʿamilū wayajziyahum ajrahum bi-aḥsani alladhī kānū yaʿmalūn

أَلَیۡسَ ٱللَّهُ بِكَافٍ عَبۡدَهُۥۖ وَیُخَوِّفُونَكَ بِٱلَّذِینَ مِن دُونِهِۦۚ وَمَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنۡ هَادࣲ ۝٣٦

Is God not all-sufficient for His servant? Yet they threaten you with those they serve besides Him

alaysa l-lahu bikāfin ʿabdahu wayukhawwifūnaka bi-alladhīna min dūnihi waman yuḍ'lili l-lahu famā lahu min hādi

وَمَن یَهۡدِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن مُّضِلٍّۗ أَلَیۡسَ ٱللَّهُ بِعَزِیزࣲ ذِی ٱنتِقَامࣲ ۝٣٧

N J Dawood 2014

He whom God confounds has none to guide him; and he whom God guides none can lead astray. Is God not mighty and capable of revenge

waman yahdi l-lahu famā lahu min muḍillin alaysa l-lahu biʿazīzin dhī intiqāmi

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلۡ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِنۡ أَرَادَنِیَ ٱللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ هَلۡ هُنَّ كَـٰشِفَـٰتُ ضُرِّهِۦۤ أَوۡ أَرَادَنِی بِرَحۡمَةٍ هَلۡ هُنَّ مُمۡسِكَـٰتُ رَحۡمَتِهِۦۚ قُلۡ حَسۡبِیَ ٱللَّهُۖ عَلَیۡهِ یَتَوَكَّلُ ٱلۡمُتَوَكِّلُونَ ۝٣٨

And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely reply: ‘God.‘ Say: ‘Do you think then that, if God be pleased to afflict me, your idols could relieve my affliction; or that if He be pleased to show me mercy, they could withhold His mercy?‘ Say: ‘God is my all-sufficient patron. In Him let the trustful put their trust.‘

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa layaqūlunna l-lahu qul afara-aytum mā tadʿūna min dūni l-lahi in arādaniya l-lahu biḍurrin hal hunna kāshifātu ḍurrihi aw arādanī biraḥmatin hal hunna mum'sikātu raḥmatihi qul ḥasbiya l-lahu ʿalayhi yatawakkalu l-mutawakilūn

قُلۡ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمۡ إِنِّی عَـٰمِلࣱۖ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٩

Say: ‘My people, do as best you can and so will I. You shall lear

qul yāqawmi iʿ'malū ʿalā makānatikum innī ʿāmilun fasawfa taʿlamūn

مَن یَأۡتِیهِ عَذَابࣱ یُخۡزِیهِ وَیَحِلُّ عَلَیۡهِ عَذَابࣱ مُّقِیمٌ ۝٤٠

who will be seized by a scourge that will disgrace him, and be smitten by a scourge everlasting.‘

man yatīhi ʿadhābun yukh'zīhi wayaḥillu ʿalayhi ʿadhābun muqīmu

إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ لِلنَّاسِ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ فَمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا یَضِلُّ عَلَیۡهَاۖ وَمَاۤ أَنتَ عَلَیۡهِم بِوَكِیلٍ ۝٤١

N J Dawood 2014

We have revealed to you the Book with the Truth, for the instruction of the people. He that follows the right path shall follow it for his own good; and he that strays shall do so at his own peril. You are not their keeper

innā anzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba lilnnāsi bil-ḥaqi famani ih'tadā falinafsihi waman ḍalla fa-innamā yaḍillu ʿalayhā wamā anta ʿalayhim biwakīli

5 Punishment cannot be averted

ٱللَّهُ یَتَوَفَّى ٱلۡأَنفُسَ حِینَ مَوۡتِهَا وَٱلَّتِی لَمۡ تَمُتۡ فِی مَنَامِهَاۖ فَیُمۡسِكُ ٱلَّتِی قَضَىٰ عَلَیۡهَا ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَیُرۡسِلُ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمًّىۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٤٢

God claims back every soul upon its death, and the souls of the living when they are asleep. Those that are doomed to die He keeps, and lets the others go for a time ordained. Surely in this there are signs for people that reflect

al-lahu yatawaffā l-anfusa ḥīna mawtihā wa-allatī lam tamut fī manāmihā fayum'siku allatī qaḍā ʿalayhā l-mawta wayur'silu l-ukh'rā ilā ajalin musamman inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yatafakkarūn

أَمِ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ شُفَعَاۤءَۚ قُلۡ أَوَ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یَمۡلِكُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤٣

Have they chosen others besides God to intercede for them? Say: ‘Even though they have no power nor understanding?‘

ami ittakhadhū min dūni l-lahi shufaʿāa qul awalaw kānū lā yamlikūna shayan walā yaʿqilūn

قُل لِّلَّهِ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةُ جَمِیعࣰاۖ لَّهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٤٤

N J Dawood 2014

Say: ‘Intercession is wholly in the hands of God. His is the sovereignty over the heavens and the earth. Then to Him shall you be recalled.‘

qul lillahi l-shafāʿatu jamīʿan lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi thumma ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

وَإِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَحۡدَهُ ٱشۡمَأَزَّتۡ قُلُوبُ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۖ وَإِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ إِذَا هُمۡ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ۝٤٥

When God alone is named, the hearts of those who deny the hereafter shrink with aversion; but when their other gods are named, they are filled with joy

wa-idhā dhukira l-lahu waḥdahu ish'ma-azzat qulūbu alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati wa-idhā dhukira alladhīna min dūnihi idhā hum yastabshirūn

قُلِ ٱللَّهُمَّ فَاطِرَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ عَـٰلِمَ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ أَنتَ تَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَ عِبَادِكَ فِی مَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝٤٦

N J Dawood 2014

Say: ‘Lord, Creator of the heavens and the earth, who has knowledge of the unknown and the manifest, You alone can judge Your servants‘ differences.‘

quli l-lahuma fāṭira l-samāwāti wal-arḍi ʿālima l-ghaybi wal-shahādati anta taḥkumu bayna ʿibādika fī mā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn

وَلَوۡ أَنَّ لِلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا وَمِثۡلَهُۥ مَعَهُۥ لَٱفۡتَدَوۡا۟ بِهِۦ مِن سُوۤءِ ٱلۡعَذَابِ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ وَبَدَا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَمۡ یَكُونُوا۟ یَحۡتَسِبُونَ ۝٤٧

If the wrongdoers possessed all the treasures of the earth and as much besides, they would gladly offer it to redeem their souls from the harrowing scourge on the Day of Resurrection. For God will show them what they have never reckoned with

walaw anna lilladhīna ẓalamū mā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan wamith'lahu maʿahu la-if'tadaw bihi min sūi l-ʿadhābi yawma l-qiyāmati wabadā lahum mina l-lahi mā lam yakūnū yaḥtasibūn

وَبَدَا لَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا كَسَبُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٤٨

And the evil of their deeds will manifest itself to them, and that which they derided will encompass them

wabadā lahum sayyiātu mā kasabū waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

فَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ ضُرࣱّ دَعَانَا ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلۡنَـٰهُ نِعۡمَةࣰ مِّنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَاۤ أُوتِیتُهُۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمِۭۚ بَلۡ هِیَ فِتۡنَةࣱ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤٩

And when evil befalls man he calls out to Us; but when, instead, We vouchsafe him a favour from Ourself, he says: ‘It is my due.‘ By no means! It is but a test: yet most of them do not know it

fa-idhā massa l-insāna ḍurrun daʿānā thumma idhā khawwalnāhu niʿ'matan minnā qāla innamā ūtītuhu ʿalā ʿil'min bal hiya fit'natun walākinna aktharahum lā yaʿlamūn

قَدۡ قَالَهَا ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٥٠

The same was said by those before them: but they gained nothing from what they did, and the very evil of their deeds recoiled upon them

qad qālahā alladhīna min qablihim famā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūn

فَأَصَابَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا كَسَبُوا۟ۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ سَیُصِیبُهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا كَسَبُوا۟ وَمَا هُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ ۝٥١

And the wrongdoers among these¹ shall also have the evil of their deeds recoil upon them: nor shall they ever be immune

fa-aṣābahum sayyiātu mā kasabū wa-alladhīna ẓalamū min hāulāi sayuṣībuhum sayyiātu mā kasabū wamā hum bimuʿ'jizīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَبۡسُطُ ٱلرِّزۡقَ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَقۡدِرُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥٢

Do they not know that God gives abundantly to whom He will and sparingly also? Surely in this there are signs for true believers

awalam yaʿlamū anna l-laha yabsuṭu l-riz'qa liman yashāu wayaqdiru inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yu'minūn

6 Divine Mercy

۞ قُلۡ یَـٰعِبَادِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَسۡرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَا تَقۡنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَغۡفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِیعًاۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٥٣

N J Dawood 2014

Say: ‘You that serve Me, who have sinned against your souls, do not despair of God‘s mercy, assuredly God forgives all sins. He it is who is the Forgiving One, the Compassionate

qul yāʿibādiya alladhīna asrafū ʿalā anfusihim lā taqnaṭū min raḥmati l-lahi inna l-laha yaghfiru l-dhunūba jamīʿan innahu huwa l-ghafūru l-raḥīm

وَأَنِیبُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمۡ وَأَسۡلِمُوا۟ لَهُۥ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یَأۡتِیَكُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ ۝٥٤

N J Dawood 2014

Turn in penitence to your Lord, and submit to Him before the scourge overtakes you; for then there will be none to help you

wa-anībū ilā rabbikum wa-aslimū lahu min qabli an yatiyakumu l-ʿadhābu thumma lā tunṣarūn

وَٱتَّبِعُوۤا۟ أَحۡسَنَ مَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُم مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَأۡتِیَكُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ بَغۡتَةࣰ وَأَنتُمۡ لَا تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٥٥

Follow the best of what is revealed to you by your Lord before the scourge suddenly smites you, when you are unaware

wa-ittabiʿū aḥsana mā unzila ilaykum min rabbikum min qabli an yatiyakumu l-ʿadhābu baghtatan wa-antum lā tashʿurūn

أَن تَقُولَ نَفۡسࣱ یَـٰحَسۡرَتَىٰ عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطتُ فِی جَنۢبِ ٱللَّهِ وَإِن كُنتُ لَمِنَ ٱلسَّـٰخِرِینَ ۝٥٦

lest any soul should say: "Alas! I neglected my duty to God and scoffed with the scoffers.

an taqūla nafsun yāḥasratā ʿalā mā farraṭtu fī janbi l-lahi wa-in kuntu lamina l-sākhirīn

أَوۡ تَقُولَ لَوۡ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هَدَىٰنِی لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٥٧

Or should say: "If God had guided me I would have feared Him.

aw taqūla law anna l-laha hadānī lakuntu mina l-mutaqīn

أَوۡ تَقُولَ حِینَ تَرَى ٱلۡعَذَابَ لَوۡ أَنَّ لِی كَرَّةࣰ فَأَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٥٨

Or, should say, when it sees the scourge: "Could I but live again, I would lead a righteous life.

aw taqūla ḥīna tarā l-ʿadhāba law anna lī karratan fa-akūna mina l-muḥ'sinīn

بَلَىٰ قَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡكَ ءَایَـٰتِی فَكَذَّبۡتَ بِهَا وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرۡتَ وَكُنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٥٩

"Yes, indeed. My revelations did come to you; but you denied them. You were arrogant and a blasphemer."‘

balā qad jāatka āyātī fakadhabta bihā wa-is'takbarta wakunta mina l-kāfirīn

وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ تَرَى ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَبُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ وُجُوهُهُم مُّسۡوَدَّةٌۚ أَلَیۡسَ فِی جَهَنَّمَ مَثۡوࣰى لِّلۡمُتَكَبِّرِینَ ۝٦٠

N J Dawood 2014

And on the Day of Resurrection you shall see their faces blackened, those who uttered falsehoods about God. Is there not in Hell a resting-place for the arrogant

wayawma l-qiyāmati tarā alladhīna kadhabū ʿalā l-lahi wujūhuhum mus'waddatun alaysa fī jahannama mathwan lil'mutakabbirīn

وَیُنَجِّی ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ بِمَفَازَتِهِمۡ لَا یَمَسُّهُمُ ٱلسُّوۤءُ وَلَا هُمۡ یَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٦١

But God will deliver those who fear Him, for they have earned salvation. Evil shall not strike them, nor shall they ever grieve

wayunajjī l-lahu alladhīna ittaqaw bimafāzatihim lā yamassuhumu l-sūu walā hum yaḥzanūn

ٱللَّهُ خَـٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَكِیلࣱ ۝٦٢

God is the Creator of all things, and of all things He is the Guardian

al-lahu khāliqu kulli shayin wahuwa ʿalā kulli shayin wakīlu

لَّهُۥ مَقَالِیدُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٦٣

His are the keys of the heavens and the earth. And those that deny God‘s revelations will surely be lost

lahu maqālīdu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa-alladhīna kafarū biāyāti l-lahi ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

7 The Final Judgment

قُلۡ أَفَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ تَأۡمُرُوۤنِّیۤ أَعۡبُدُ أَیُّهَا ٱلۡجَـٰهِلُونَ ۝٦٤

Say: ‘ Would you bid me serve a deity other than God, you ignorant people?‘

qul afaghayra l-lahi tamurūnnī aʿbudu ayyuhā l-jāhilūn

وَلَقَدۡ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَ وَإِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ لَىِٕنۡ أَشۡرَكۡتَ لَیَحۡبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٦٥

You have been warned, you and those who have gone before you, that if you worship other deities besides God, your works will come to nothing and you will surely be among the lost.

walaqad ūḥiya ilayka wa-ilā alladhīna min qablika la-in ashrakta layaḥbaṭanna ʿamaluka walatakūnanna mina l-khāsirīn

بَلِ ٱللَّهَ فَٱعۡبُدۡ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝٦٦

Therefore serve God and render thanks

bali l-laha fa-uʿ'bud wakun mina l-shākirīn

وَمَا قَدَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدۡرِهِۦ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ جَمِیعࣰا قَبۡضَتُهُۥ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُ مَطۡوِیَّـٰتُۢ بِیَمِینِهِۦۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٦٧

They underrate the might of God. But on the Day of Resurrection He will hold the entire earth in His grasp and fold up the heavens in His right hand. Glory be to Him! Exalted be He above their idols

wamā qadarū l-laha ḥaqqa qadrihi wal-arḍu jamīʿan qabḍatuhu yawma l-qiyāmati wal-samāwātu maṭwiyyātun biyamīnihi sub'ḥānahu wataʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

وَنُفِخَ فِی ٱلصُّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّا مَن شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۖ ثُمَّ نُفِخَ فِیهِ أُخۡرَىٰ فَإِذَا هُمۡ قِیَامࣱ یَنظُرُونَ ۝٦٨

And the Trumpet shall be blown, and all who are in the heavens and on earth shall fall down in shock, except those that shall be spared by God. Then the Trumpet will be blown again and lo! they shall rise and gaze around them

wanufikha fī l-ṣūri faṣaʿiqa man fī l-samāwāti waman fī l-arḍi illā man shāa l-lahu thumma nufikha fīhi ukh'rā fa-idhā hum qiyāmun yanẓurūn

وَأَشۡرَقَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ بِنُورِ رَبِّهَا وَوُضِعَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ وَجِا۟یۤءَ بِٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ وَٱلشُّهَدَاۤءِ وَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٩

The earth will shine with the light of her Lord, and the Book will be laid open. The prophets and the witnesses shall be brought in, and all shall be judged with fairness: none shall be wronged

wa-ashraqati l-arḍu binūri rabbihā wawuḍiʿa l-kitābu wajīa bil-nabiyīna wal-shuhadāi waquḍiya baynahum bil-ḥaqi wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

وَوُفِّیَتۡ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّا عَمِلَتۡ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٠

Every soul shall be recompensed according to its deeds, for He best knows all that they did

wawuffiyat kullu nafsin mā ʿamilat wahuwa aʿlamu bimā yafʿalūn

8 Each Party meets its Desert

وَسِیقَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ زُمَرًاۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءُوهَا فُتِحَتۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبُهَا وَقَالَ لَهُمۡ خَزَنَتُهَاۤ أَلَمۡ یَأۡتِكُمۡ رُسُلࣱ مِّنكُمۡ یَتۡلُونَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّكُمۡ وَیُنذِرُونَكُمۡ لِقَاۤءَ یَوۡمِكُمۡ هَـٰذَاۚ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَلَـٰكِنۡ حَقَّتۡ كَلِمَةُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٧١

And in throngs the unbelievers shall be led to Hell. When they draw near, its gates will be opened, and its keepers will say to them: ‘Did there not come to you apostles of your own who proclaimed to you the revelations of your Lord and forewarned you of this day?‘ ‘Yes,‘ they will say. And thus the promised scourge will smite the unbelievers

wasīqa alladhīna kafarū ilā jahannama zumaran ḥattā idhā jāūhā futiḥat abwābuhā waqāla lahum khazanatuhā alam yatikum rusulun minkum yatlūna ʿalaykum āyāti rabbikum wayundhirūnakum liqāa yawmikum hādhā qālū balā walākin ḥaqqat kalimatu l-ʿadhābi ʿalā l-kāfirīn

قِیلَ ٱدۡخُلُوۤا۟ أَبۡوَ ٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ مَثۡوَى ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرِینَ ۝٧٢

They will be told: ‘Enter the gates of Hell and stay therein for ever.‘ Evil shall be the dwelling-place of the arrogant

qīla ud'khulū abwāba jahannama khālidīna fīhā fabi'sa mathwā l-mutakabirīn

وَسِیقَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ رَبَّهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡجَنَّةِ زُمَرًاۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءُوهَا وَفُتِحَتۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبُهَا وَقَالَ لَهُمۡ خَزَنَتُهَا سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكُمۡ طِبۡتُمۡ فَٱدۡخُلُوهَا خَـٰلِدِینَ ۝٧٣

And in throngs those who fear their Lord shall be led to Paradise. When they draw near, its gates will be opened, and its keepers will say to them: ‘Peace be to you; you have led good lives. Enter Paradise and abide therein for ever.‘

wasīqa alladhīna ittaqaw rabbahum ilā l-janati zumaran ḥattā idhā jāūhā wafutiḥat abwābuhā waqāla lahum khazanatuhā salāmun ʿalaykum ṭib'tum fa-ud'khulūhā khālidīn

وَقَالُوا۟ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِی صَدَقَنَا وَعۡدَهُۥ وَأَوۡرَثَنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ نَتَبَوَّأُ مِنَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ حَیۡثُ نَشَاۤءُۖ فَنِعۡمَ أَجۡرُ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلِینَ ۝٧٤

N J Dawood 2014

And they will say: ‘Praise be to God who has made good to us His promise and given us the earth to inherit, that we may dwell in Paradise wherever we please.‘ Blessed is the reward of the righteous

waqālū l-ḥamdu lillahi alladhī ṣadaqanā waʿdahu wa-awrathanā l-arḍa natabawwa-u mina l-janati ḥaythu nashāu faniʿ'ma ajru l-ʿāmilīn

وَتَرَى ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ حَاۤفِّینَ مِنۡ حَوۡلِ ٱلۡعَرۡشِ یُسَبِّحُونَ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّهِمۡۚ وَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ وَقِیلَ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٥

And you shall behold the angels circling about the Throne, giving glory to their Lord. They shall be judged with fairness, and all shall say: ‘Praise be to God, Lord of the Universe!‘

watarā l-malāikata ḥāffīna min ḥawli l-ʿarshi yusabbiḥūna biḥamdi rabbihim waquḍiya baynahum bil-ḥaqi waqīla l-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
