هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَخۡرَجَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِن دِیَـٰرِهِمۡ لِأَوَّلِ ٱلۡحَشۡرِۚ مَا ظَنَنتُمۡ أَن یَخۡرُجُوا۟ۖ وَظَنُّوۤا۟ أَنَّهُم مَّانِعَتُهُمۡ حُصُونُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ فَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَمۡ یَحۡتَسِبُوا۟ۖ وَقَذَفَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلرُّعۡبَۚ یُخۡرِبُونَ بُیُوتَهُم بِأَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَأَیۡدِی ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ فَٱعۡتَبِرُوا۟ یَـٰۤأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرِ ۝٢

John Medows Rodwell

He it is who caused the unbelievers among the people of the Book to quit their homes and join those who had EMIGRATED previously. Ye did not think that they would quit them; and they on their part thought that their fortresses would protect them against God: But God came upon them whence they looked not for Him, and cast such fear into their hearts that by their own hands as well as by the hands of the victorious believers they demolished their houses! Profit by this example ye who are men of insight

huwa alladhī akhraja alladhīna kafarū min ahli l-kitābi min diyārihim li-awwali l-ḥashri mā ẓanantum an yakhrujū waẓannū annahum māniʿatuhum ḥuṣūnuhum mina l-lahi fa-atāhumu l-lahu min ḥaythu lam yaḥtasibū waqadhafa fī qulūbihimu l-ruʿ'ba yukh'ribūna buyūtahum bi-aydīhim wa-aydī l-mu'minīna fa-iʿ'tabirū yāulī l-abṣār

59:3

وَلَوۡلَاۤ أَن كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡجَلَاۤءَ لَعَذَّبَهُمۡ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَلَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ عَذَابُ ٱلنَّارِ ۝٣

John Medows Rodwell

And were it not that God had decreed their exile, surely in this world would he have chastised them: but in the world to come the chastisement of the fire awaiteth them

walawlā an kataba l-lahu ʿalayhimu l-jalāa laʿadhabahum fī l-dun'yā walahum fī l-ākhirati ʿadhābu l-nār

59:4

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ شَاۤقُّوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ وَمَن یُشَاۤقِّ ٱللَّهَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝٤

John Medows Rodwell

This because they set them against God and his apostle; and whoso setteth him against God. . . . ! God truly is vehement in punishing

dhālika bi-annahum shāqqū l-laha warasūlahu waman yushāqqi l-laha fa-inna l-laha shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

59:5

مَا قَطَعۡتُم مِّن لِّینَةٍ أَوۡ تَرَكۡتُمُوهَا قَاۤىِٕمَةً عَلَىٰۤ أُصُولِهَا فَبِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِیُخۡزِیَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٥

John Medows Rodwell

Your cutting down some of their palm trees and sparing others was by God's permission, and to put the wicked to shame

mā qaṭaʿtum min līnatin aw taraktumūhā qāimatan ʿalā uṣūlihā fabi-idh'ni l-lahi waliyukh'ziya l-fāsiqīn

59:6

وَمَاۤ أَفَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ مِنۡهُمۡ فَمَاۤ أَوۡجَفۡتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ خَیۡلࣲ وَلَا رِكَابࣲ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُسَلِّطُ رُسُلَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٦

John Medows Rodwell

After the spoils of these Jews which God hath assigned to his apostle, ye pressed not with horse or camel. But God giveth his apostles power over what he will. God is Almighty

wamā afāa l-lahu ʿalā rasūlihi min'hum famā awjaftum ʿalayhi min khaylin walā rikābin walākinna l-laha yusalliṭu rusulahu ʿalā man yashāu wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

59:7

مَّاۤ أَفَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ فَلِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَلِذِی ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ كَیۡ لَا یَكُونَ دُولَةَۢ بَیۡنَ ٱلۡأَغۡنِیَاۤءِ مِنكُمۡۚ وَمَاۤ ءَاتَىٰكُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَىٰكُمۡ عَنۡهُ فَٱنتَهُوا۟ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝٧

John Medows Rodwell

The spoil taken from the people of the towns and assigned by God to his apostle, belongeth to God, and to the apostle, and to his kindred, and to the orphan, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer, that none of it may circulate among such of you only as are rich: What the apostle hath given you, take: What he hath refused you, refuse: And fear ye God, for God is severe in punishing

mā afāa l-lahu ʿalā rasūlihi min ahli l-qurā falillahi walilrrasūli walidhī l-qur'bā wal-yatāmā wal-masākīni wa-ib'ni l-sabīli kay lā yakūna dūlatan bayna l-aghniyāi minkum wamā ātākumu l-rasūlu fakhudhūhu wamā nahākum ʿanhu fa-intahū wa-ittaqū l-laha inna l-laha shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

59:8

لِلۡفُقَرَاۤءِ ٱلۡمُهَـٰجِرِینَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُخۡرِجُوا۟ مِن دِیَـٰرِهِمۡ وَأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ یَبۡتَغُونَ فَضۡلࣰا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضۡوَ ٰنࣰا وَیَنصُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۤۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلصَّـٰدِقُونَ ۝٨

John Medows Rodwell

To the poor refugees (Mohadjerin) also doth a part belong, who have been driven from their homes and their substance, and who seek favour from God and his goodwill, and aid God and his apostle. These are the men of genuine virtue

lil'fuqarāi l-muhājirīna alladhīna ukh'rijū min diyārihim wa-amwālihim yabtaghūna faḍlan mina l-lahi wariḍ'wānan wayanṣurūna l-laha warasūlahu ulāika humu l-ṣādiqūn

59:9

وَٱلَّذِینَ تَبَوَّءُو ٱلدَّارَ وَٱلۡإِیمَـٰنَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ یُحِبُّونَ مَنۡ هَاجَرَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا یَجِدُونَ فِی صُدُورِهِمۡ حَاجَةࣰ مِّمَّاۤ أُوتُوا۟ وَیُؤۡثِرُونَ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ وَلَوۡ كَانَ بِهِمۡ خَصَاصَةࣱۚ وَمَن یُوقَ شُحَّ نَفۡسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٩

John Medows Rodwell

They of Medina who had been in possession of their abodes and embraced the faith before them, cherish those who take refuge with them; and they find not in their breasts any desire for what hath fallen to their share: they prefer them before themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And with such as are preserved from their own covetousness shall it be well

wa-alladhīna tabawwaū l-dāra wal-īmāna min qablihim yuḥibbūna man hājara ilayhim walā yajidūna fī ṣudūrihim ḥājatan mimmā ūtū wayu'thirūna ʿalā anfusihim walaw kāna bihim khaṣāṣatun waman yūqa shuḥḥa nafsihi fa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

59:10

وَٱلَّذِینَ جَاۤءُو مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ یَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَلِإِخۡوَ ٰنِنَا ٱلَّذِینَ سَبَقُونَا بِٱلۡإِیمَـٰنِ وَلَا تَجۡعَلۡ فِی قُلُوبِنَا غِلࣰّا لِّلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّكَ رَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١٠

John Medows Rodwell

And they who have come after them into the faith say, "O our Lord! forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in the faith, and put not into our hearts ill-will against those who believe. O our Lord! thou verily art Kind, Merciful."

wa-alladhīna jāū min baʿdihim yaqūlūna rabbanā igh'fir lanā wali-ikh'wāninā alladhīna sabaqūnā bil-īmāni walā tajʿal fī qulūbinā ghillan lilladhīna āmanū rabbanā innaka raūfun raḥīmu

59:11

۞ أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ نَافَقُوا۟ یَقُولُونَ لِإِخۡوَ ٰنِهِمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَىِٕنۡ أُخۡرِجۡتُمۡ لَنَخۡرُجَنَّ مَعَكُمۡ وَلَا نُطِیعُ فِیكُمۡ أَحَدًا أَبَدࣰا وَإِن قُوتِلۡتُمۡ لَنَنصُرَنَّكُمۡ وَٱللَّهُ یَشۡهَدُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١١

John Medows Rodwell

Hast thou not observed the disaffected saying to their unbelieving brethren among the people of the Book, "If ye be driven forth, we will go forth with you; and in what concerneth you, never will we obey any one; and if ye be attacked we will certainly come to your help." But God is witness that they are liars

alam tara ilā alladhīna nāfaqū yaqūlūna li-ikh'wānihimu alladhīna kafarū min ahli l-kitābi la-in ukh'rij'tum lanakhrujanna maʿakum walā nuṭīʿu fīkum aḥadan abadan wa-in qūtil'tum lananṣurannakum wal-lahu yashhadu innahum lakādhibūn

59:12

لَىِٕنۡ أُخۡرِجُوا۟ لَا یَخۡرُجُونَ مَعَهُمۡ وَلَىِٕن قُوتِلُوا۟ لَا یَنصُرُونَهُمۡ وَلَىِٕن نَّصَرُوهُمۡ لَیُوَلُّنَّ ٱلۡأَدۡبَـٰرَ ثُمَّ لَا یُنصَرُونَ ۝١٢

John Medows Rodwell

No! if they were driven forth, they would not share their banishment; if they were attacked they would not help them, or if they help them they will surely turn their backs: then would they remain unhelped

la-in ukh'rijū lā yakhrujūna maʿahum wala-in qūtilū lā yanṣurūnahum wala-in naṣarūhum layuwallunna l-adbāra thumma lā yunṣarūn

59:13

لَأَنتُمۡ أَشَدُّ رَهۡبَةࣰ فِی صُدُورِهِم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝١٣

John Medows Rodwell

Assuredly the fear of you is more intense in their hearts than the fear of God! This because they are a people devoid of discernment

la-antum ashaddu rahbatan fī ṣudūrihim mina l-lahi dhālika bi-annahum qawmun lā yafqahūn

59:14

لَا یُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمۡ جَمِیعًا إِلَّا فِی قُرࣰى مُّحَصَّنَةٍ أَوۡ مِن وَرَاۤءِ جُدُرِۭۚ بَأۡسُهُم بَیۡنَهُمۡ شَدِیدࣱۚ تَحۡسَبُهُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا وَقُلُوبُهُمۡ شَتَّىٰۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٤

John Medows Rodwell

They (the Jews) will not fight against you in a body except in fenced towns or from behind walls. Mighty is their valour among themselves! thou thinkest them united - but their hearts are divided. This for that they are a people who understand not

lā yuqātilūnakum jamīʿan illā fī quran muḥaṣṣanatin aw min warāi judurin basuhum baynahum shadīdun taḥsabuhum jamīʿan waqulūbuhum shattā dhālika bi-annahum qawmun lā yaʿqilūn

59:15

كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ قَرِیبࣰاۖ ذَاقُوا۟ وَبَالَ أَمۡرِهِمۡ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝١٥

John Medows Rodwell

They act like those who lately preceded them, who also tasted the result of their doings; and a grievous chastisement awaiteth them

kamathali alladhīna min qablihim qarīban dhāqū wabāla amrihim walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

59:16

كَمَثَلِ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ إِذۡ قَالَ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ ٱكۡفُرۡ فَلَمَّا كَفَرَ قَالَ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّنكَ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ ٱللَّهَ رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

John Medows Rodwell

Like Satan when he saith to a man, "Be an infidel:" and when he hath become an infidel, he saith, "I share not thy guilt: verily, I fear God the Lord of the Worlds."

kamathali l-shayṭāni idh qāla lil'insāni uk'fur falammā kafara qāla innī barīon minka innī akhāfu l-laha rabba l-ʿālamīn

59:17

فَكَانَ عَـٰقِبَتَهُمَاۤ أَنَّهُمَا فِی ٱلنَّارِ خَـٰلِدَیۡنِ فِیهَاۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَ ٰۤؤُا۟ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٧

John Medows Rodwell

Of both, therefore, shall the end be that they dwell for ever in the fire: This is the recompense of the evil doers

fakāna ʿāqibatahumā annahumā fī l-nāri khālidayni fīhā wadhālika jazāu l-ẓālimīn

59:18

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلۡتَنظُرۡ نَفۡسࣱ مَّا قَدَّمَتۡ لِغَدࣲۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨

John Medows Rodwell

O ye who believe! fear God. And let every soul look well to what it sendeth on before for the morrow. And fear ye God: Verily, God is cognisant of what ye do

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū ittaqū l-laha waltanẓur nafsun mā qaddamat lighadin wa-ittaqū l-laha inna l-laha khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn

59:19

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِینَ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَأَنسَىٰهُمۡ أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ ۝١٩

John Medows Rodwell

And be ye not like those who forget God, and whom He hath therefore caused to forget their proper selves. Such men are the evil doers

walā takūnū ka-alladhīna nasū l-laha fa-ansāhum anfusahum ulāika humu l-fāsiqūn

59:20

لَا یَسۡتَوِیۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۚ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ هُمُ ٱلۡفَاۤىِٕزُونَ ۝٢٠

John Medows Rodwell

The inmates of the Fire and the inmates of Paradise are not to be held equal. The inmates of Paradise only shall be the blissful

lā yastawī aṣḥābu l-nāri wa-aṣḥābu l-janati aṣḥābu l-janati humu l-fāizūn

59:21

لَوۡ أَنزَلۡنَا هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلࣲ لَّرَأَیۡتَهُۥ خَـٰشِعࣰا مُّتَصَدِّعࣰا مِّنۡ خَشۡیَةِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَـٰلُ نَضۡرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٢١

John Medows Rodwell

Had we sent down this Koran on some mountain, thou wouldst certainly have seen it humbling itself and cleaving asunder for the fear of God. Such are the parables we propose to men in order that they may reflect

law anzalnā hādhā l-qur'āna ʿalā jabalin lara-aytahu khāshiʿan mutaṣaddiʿan min khashyati l-lahi watil'ka l-amthālu naḍribuhā lilnnāsi laʿallahum yatafakkarūn

59:22

هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِۖ هُوَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٢٢

John Medows Rodwell

He is God beside whom there is no god. He knoweth things visible and invisible: He is the Compassionate, the Merciful

huwa l-lahu alladhī lā ilāha illā huwa ʿālimu l-ghaybi wal-shahādati huwa l-raḥmānu l-raḥīm

59:23

هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡمَلِكُ ٱلۡقُدُّوسُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُ ٱلۡمُهَیۡمِنُ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡجَبَّارُ ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرُۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٢٣

John Medows Rodwell

He is God beside whom there is no god: He is the King, the Holy, the Peaceful, the Faithful, the Guardian, the Mighty, the Strong, the Most High! Far be the Glory of God from that which they unite with Him

huwa l-lahu alladhī lā ilāha illā huwa l-maliku l-qudūsu l-salāmu l-mu'minu l-muhayminu l-ʿazīzu l-jabāru l-mutakabiru sub'ḥāna l-lahi ʿammā yush'rikūn

59:24

هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقُ ٱلۡبَارِئُ ٱلۡمُصَوِّرُۖ لَهُ ٱلۡأَسۡمَاۤءُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚ یُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٢٤

John Medows Rodwell

He is God, the Producer, the Maker, the Fashioner! To Him are ascribed excellent titles. Whatever is in the Heavens and in the Earth praiseth Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise

huwa l-lahu l-khāliqu l-bāri-u l-muṣawiru lahu l-asmāu l-ḥus'nā yusabbiḥu lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm
