Mutual Disillusion, Haggling, The Cheating — John Medows Rodwell Translation

He knoweth all that passeth in the Heavens and in the Earth; and He knoweth what ye hide and what ye bring to light; and God knoweth the very secrets of men's breasts

yaʿlamu mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wayaʿlamu mā tusirrūna wamā tuʿ'linūna wal-lahu ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

64:5

أَلَمۡ یَأۡتِكُمۡ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلُ فَذَاقُوا۟ وَبَالَ أَمۡرِهِمۡ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٥

John Medows Rodwell

Hath not the story reached you of those who disbelieved of yore, and therefore tasted the evil consequences of their doings? And a sore punishment doth await them

alam yatikum naba-u alladhīna kafarū min qablu fadhāqū wabāla amrihim walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

64:6

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُۥ كَانَت تَّأۡتِیهِمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَقَالُوۤا۟ أَبَشَرࣱ یَهۡدُونَنَا فَكَفَرُوا۟ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ۖ وَّٱسۡتَغۡنَى ٱللَّهُۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَنِیٌّ حَمِیدࣱ ۝٦

John Medows Rodwell

This, for that when their apostles came to them with the clear tokens, they said, "What! shall men be our guides?" And they believed not and turned their backs. But God can dispense with them; for God is the Rich, the Praiseworthy

dhālika bi-annahu kānat tatīhim rusuluhum bil-bayināti faqālū abasharun yahdūnanā fakafarū watawallaw wa-is'taghnā l-lahu wal-lahu ghaniyyun ḥamīdu

64:7

زَعَمَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَن لَّن یُبۡعَثُوا۟ۚ قُلۡ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّی لَتُبۡعَثُنَّ ثُمَّ لَتُنَبَّؤُنَّ بِمَا عَمِلۡتُمۡۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ یَسِیرࣱ ۝٧

John Medows Rodwell

The infidels pretend that they shall not be raised from the dead. SAY: Yea, by my Lord, ye shall surely be raised; then shall ye surely be told of your deeds! And easy is this for God

zaʿama alladhīna kafarū an lan yub'ʿathū qul balā warabbī latub'ʿathunna thumma latunabba-unna bimā ʿamil'tum wadhālika ʿalā l-lahi yasīru

64:8

فَءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَٱلنُّورِ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلۡنَاۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝٨

John Medows Rodwell

Believe then in God and his apostle and in the light which we have sent down; for God is fully aware of all ye do

faāminū bil-lahi warasūlihi wal-nūri alladhī anzalnā wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

64:9

یَوۡمَ یَجۡمَعُكُمۡ لِیَوۡمِ ٱلۡجَمۡعِۖ ذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمُ ٱلتَّغَابُنِۗ وَمَن یُؤۡمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ وَیَعۡمَلۡ صَـٰلِحࣰا یُكَفِّرۡ عَنۡهُ سَیِّءَاتِهِۦ وَیُدۡخِلۡهُ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٩

John Medows Rodwell

The day when He shall gather you together for the day of mutual gathering, will be the day of MUTUAL DECEIT, and whoso shall have believed in God and done what is right, for him will He cancel his deeds of evil; and He will bring him into the gardens beneath whose shades the rivers flow, to abide therein for evermore. This will be the great bliss

yawma yajmaʿukum liyawmi l-jamʿi dhālika yawmu l-taghābuni waman yu'min bil-lahi wayaʿmal ṣāliḥan yukaffir ʿanhu sayyiātihi wayud'khil'hu jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadan dhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

64:10

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝١٠

John Medows Rodwell

But the unbelieving - those who gave the lie to our signs - shall be the inmates of the fire, wherein they shall remain for ever. And a wretched passage thither

wa-alladhīna kafarū wakadhabū biāyātinā ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri khālidīna fīhā wabi'sa l-maṣīr

64:11

مَاۤ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِیبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۗ وَمَن یُؤۡمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ یَهۡدِ قَلۡبَهُۥۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمࣱ ۝١١

John Medows Rodwell

No mischance chanceth but by God's permission; and whoso believeth in God, that man's heart will he guide: and God knoweth all things

mā aṣāba min muṣībatin illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi waman yu'min bil-lahi yahdi qalbahu wal-lahu bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

64:12

وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَىٰ رَسُولِنَا ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٢

John Medows Rodwell

Obey God then and obey the apostle: but if ye turn away, our apostle is not to blame, for he is only charged with plain preaching

wa-aṭīʿū l-laha wa-aṭīʿū l-rasūla fa-in tawallaytum fa-innamā ʿalā rasūlinā l-balāghu l-mubīn

64:13

ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٣

John Medows Rodwell

God! there is no God but He! On God, then, let the faithful trust

al-lahu lā ilāha illā huwa waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

64:14

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِنَّ مِنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۡ وَأَوۡلَـٰدِكُمۡ عَدُوࣰّا لَّكُمۡ فَٱحۡذَرُوهُمۡۚ وَإِن تَعۡفُوا۟ وَتَصۡفَحُوا۟ وَتَغۡفِرُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١٤

John Medows Rodwell

O ye who believe! Verily, in your wives and your children ye have an enemy: wherefore beware of them. But if ye pass it over and pardon, and are lenient, then God too is Lenient, Merciful

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū inna min azwājikum wa-awlādikum ʿaduwwan lakum fa-iḥ'dharūhum wa-in taʿfū wataṣfaḥū wataghfirū fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

64:15

إِنَّمَاۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلُكُمۡ وَأَوۡلَـٰدُكُمۡ فِتۡنَةࣱۚ وَٱللَّهُ عِندَهُۥۤ أَجۡرٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٥

John Medows Rodwell

Your wealth and your children are only a source of trial! but God! with Him is the great recompense

innamā amwālukum wa-awlādukum fit'natun wal-lahu ʿindahu ajrun ʿaẓīmu

64:16

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُمۡ وَٱسۡمَعُوا۟ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ وَأَنفِقُوا۟ خَیۡرࣰا لِّأَنفُسِكُمۡۗ وَمَن یُوقَ شُحَّ نَفۡسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١٦

John Medows Rodwell

Fear God, then, with all your might, and hear and obey: and give alms for your own weal; for such as are saved from their own greed, shall prosper

fa-ittaqū l-laha mā is'taṭaʿtum wa-is'maʿū wa-aṭīʿū wa-anfiqū khayran li-anfusikum waman yūqa shuḥḥa nafsihi fa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

64:17

إِن تُقۡرِضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنࣰا یُضَـٰعِفۡهُ لَكُمۡ وَیَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ شَكُورٌ حَلِیمٌ ۝١٧

John Medows Rodwell

If ye lend God a generous loan, He will double it to you and will forgive you, for God is Grateful, Long-suffering

in tuq'riḍū l-laha qarḍan ḥasanan yuḍāʿif'hu lakum wayaghfir lakum wal-lahu shakūrun ḥalīmu

64:18

عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝١٨

John Medows Rodwell

He knoweth alike the Hidden and the Manifest: the Mighty, the Wise
