1 The Prophet enjoined to warn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ ۝١

O you (Muhammad) enveloped (in garments)!

yāayyuhā l-mudathir

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ ۝٢

Arise and warn.

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ ۝٣

Proclaim (the greatness of) your Lord (Allah),

warabbaka fakabbi

وَثِیَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ ۝٤

and purify your garments,

wathiyābaka faṭahhi

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ ۝٥

and keep away from filth (idols),

wal-ruj'za fa-uh'ju

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ ۝٦

and don’t give a thing to have more (obey Allah not as a Favor to Him)

walā tamnun tastakthir

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ ۝٧

and be patient for the sake of your Lord!

walirabbika fa-iṣ'bi

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِی ٱلنَّاقُورِ ۝٨

When the trumpet will be sounded,

fa-idhā nuqira fī l-nāqūr

فَذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَوۡمٌ عَسِیرٌ ۝٩

surely, that Day will be a hard Day,

fadhālika yawma-idhin yawmun ʿasīru

عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ غَیۡرُ یَسِیرࣲ ۝١٠

not easy for the disbelievers.

dharnī waman khalaqtu waḥīda

ذَرۡنِی وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِیدࣰا ۝١١

Leave Me alone to deal with whom I created alone (without any means, including Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah, a bitter opponent of the prophet)!

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰا مَّمۡدُودࣰا ۝١٢

and Allah granted him abundant resources,

wajaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūda

وَبَنِینَ شُهُودࣰا ۝١٣

and children by his side,

wabanīna shuhūda

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِیدࣰا ۝١٤

and made life smooth and comfortable for him.

wamahhadttu lahu tamhīda

ثُمَّ یَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِیدَ ۝١٥

Yet, he desires that I should give more.

thumma yaṭmaʿu an azīd

كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَایَـٰتِنَا عَنِیدࣰا ۝١٦

Nay! Surely, he has been stubborn and opposing to Our revelations.

kallā innahu kāna liāyātinā ʿanīda

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ۝١٧

I shall soon oblige him to face (climb a slippery mountain in the hellfire) a severe punishment,

sa-ur'hiquhu ṣaʿūda

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ۝١٨

surely, he thought and plotted.

innahu fakkara waqaddar

فَقُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝١٩

So let him be cursed, how he plotted!

faqutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝٢٠

And (again) let him be cursed, how he plotted!

thumma qutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ۝٢١

Then he thought,

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ۝٢٢

then frowned and looked in a bad tempered way,

thumma ʿabasa wabasar

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ ۝٢٣

then he turned his back and was proud

thumma adbara wa-is'takbar

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ یُؤۡثَرُ ۝٢٤

and he said: “This is nothing but a magic from the old,

faqāla in hādhā illā siḥ'run yu'thar

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٥

this is nothing but the word of a human being.”

in hādhā illā qawlu l-bashar

سَأُصۡلِیهِ سَقَرَ ۝٢٦

I will burn him in hellfire.

sa-uṣ'līhi saqar

وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ۝٢٧

And what will make you know exactly what hellfire is?

wamā adrāka mā saqar

لَا تُبۡقِی وَلَا تَذَرُ ۝٢٨

It does not spare (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything not burnt)!

lā tub'qī walā tadhar

لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٩

Fire burns the skins.

lawwāḥatun lil'bashar

عَلَیۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ ۝٣٠

Over it are 19 (angels as guardians and keepers of hell).

wamā jaʿalnā aṣḥāba l-nāri illā malāikatan wamā jaʿalnā ʿiddatahum illā fit'natan lilladhīna kafarū liyastayqina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wayazdāda alladhīna āmanū īmānan walā yartāba alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wal-mu'minūna waliyaqūla alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wal-kāfirūna mādhā arāda l-lahu bihādhā mathalan kadhālika yuḍillu l-lahu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu wamā yaʿlamu junūda rabbika illā huwa wamā hiya illā dhik'rā lil'bashar

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِیَسۡتَیۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَیَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَلَا یَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِیَقُولَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَاۤ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِیَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣١

And We have set none but angels as guardians of the fire. We have not fixed their numbers (19) except as a trial for those who disbelieve in order that those who were given the Scripture may be convinced (Qur’an is the truth as it agrees with their books i.e. number (19) is written in the Torah and the Gospel). Those who believe may increase in faith (in Qur’an). Those who were given the Scripture and believers may say to those in whose hearts there is a disease (hypocrisy) and the disbelievers say: “What Allah means by this example?” Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. No one knows the forces of your Lord but He. This (Qur’an) is nothing but a reminder to mankind.

Wama jaAAalna as-haba alnnari illa mala-ikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmu/minoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

2 The Warning

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ ۝٣٢

Nay, by the moon

kallā wal-qamar

وَٱلَّیۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ ۝٣٣

and by the night when it withdraws

wa-al-layli idh adbar

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَاۤ أَسۡفَرَ ۝٣٤

and by the dawn when it brightens,

wal-ṣub'ḥi idhā asfar

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ ۝٣٥

surely, it (hell) is one of the greatest signs,

innahā la-iḥ'dā l-kubar

نَذِیرࣰا لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣٦

and a warning to mankind,

nadhīran lil'bashar

لِمَن شَاۤءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن یَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ یَتَأَخَّرَ ۝٣٧

to any of you that chooses to go forward (by righteous deeds), or remain behind (by sins).

liman shāa minkum an yataqaddama aw yata-akhar

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِینَةٌ ۝٣٨

Every person is held in a pledge for what he has earned,

kullu nafsin bimā kasabat rahīnatu

إِلَّاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٩

except those on the right (true believers),

illā aṣḥāba l-yamīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٤٠

in gardens (Paradise) they will ask one another,

fī jannātin yatasāalūn

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٤١

about the criminals. (They will say to them):

mā salakakum fī saqar

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِی سَقَرَ ۝٤٢

“What has caused you to enter into hell?”

Ma salakakum fee saqara

قَالُوا۟ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٤٣

They will say: “We were not of those who used to offer prayers,

qālū lam naku mina l-muṣalīn

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِینَ ۝٤٤

nor we used to feed the poor,

walam naku nuṭ'ʿimu l-mis'kīn

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَاۤىِٕضِینَ ۝٤٥

we used to talk falsehood with vain talkers

wakunnā nakhūḍu maʿa l-khāiḍīn

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٤٦

and we used to deny the Day of recompense,

wakunnā nukadhibu biyawmi l-dīn

حَتَّىٰۤ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٤٧

until there came to us the certainty (death).”

ḥattā atānā l-yaqīn

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِینَ ۝٤٨

(On that Day) no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them.

famā tanfaʿuhum shafāʿatu l-shāfiʿīn

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤٩

Then what is wrong with them (disbelievers) that they turn away from receiving the admonition?

famā lahum ʿani l-tadhkirati muʿ'riḍīn

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ ۝٥٠

As if they were frightened donkeys

ka-annahum ḥumurun mus'tanfiratu

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ ۝٥١

fleeing from a hunter, or a lion, or a beast of prey.

farrat min qaswarati

بَلۡ یُرِیدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ ۝٥٢

Nay, everyone of them desires that he should be given pages spread out (writing from Allah that Islam is the right religion).

bal yurīdu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yu'tā ṣuḥufan munasharata

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا یَخَافُونَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ ۝٥٣

Nay! But they don’t fear the Hereafter (Allah’s punishment).

kallā bal lā yakhāfūna l-ākhirat

كَلَّاۤ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ ۝٥٤

Nay, surely, this (Qur’an) is an admonition.

kallā innahu tadhkiratu

فَمَن شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ۝٥٥

So whoever wills (let him read it), will reflect on it.

faman shāa dhakarah

وَمَا یَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ ۝٥٦

And they will not take heed unless Allah wills. He is the One deserves that mankind should be afraid of Him. He is the One Who forgives.

wamā yadhkurūna illā an yashāa l-lahu huwa ahlu l-taqwā wa-ahlu l-maghfirat
