1 The Prophet enjoined to warn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ ۝١

O you (who are) covered with cloth !

yāayyuhā l-mudathir

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ ۝٢

Rise, then warn

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ ۝٣

and then (declare) the greatness of your Fosterer,

warabbaka fakabbi

وَثِیَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ ۝٤

and then keep your clothes clean,

wathiyābaka faṭahhi

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ ۝٥

and then forsake uncleanliness,

wal-ruj'za fa-uh'ju

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ ۝٦

and do not bestow favour (with the intention of) receiving more (in return)

walā tamnun tastakthir

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ ۝٧

and then be patient for (the sake of) your Fosterer.

walirabbika fa-iṣ'bi

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِی ٱلنَّاقُورِ ۝٨

So (the day) when the trumpet will be sounded,

fa-idhā nuqira fī l-nāqūr

فَذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَوۡمٌ عَسِیرٌ ۝٩

then that day will be the day of difficulty,

fadhālika yawma-idhin yawmun ʿasīru

عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ غَیۡرُ یَسِیرࣲ ۝١٠

it will not be easy for the infidels.

dharnī waman khalaqtu waḥīda

ذَرۡنِی وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِیدࣰا ۝١١

Leave Me and him whom I created alone

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰا مَّمۡدُودࣰا ۝١٢

and assigned to him extensive wealth

wajaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūda

وَبَنِینَ شُهُودࣰا ۝١٣

and sons who are witnessed (being always present before him)

wabanīna shuhūda

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِیدࣰا ۝١٤

and made habitable for him (his) habitation.

wamahhadttu lahu tamhīda

ثُمَّ یَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِیدَ ۝١٥

(Even) then he hopes that I would give him more !

thumma yaṭmaʿu an azīd

كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَایَـٰتِنَا عَنِیدࣰا ۝١٦

By no means ! he offers opposition to Our signs.

kallā innahu kāna liāyātinā ʿanīda

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ۝١٧

I will involve him in a severe punishment.

sa-ur'hiquhu ṣaʿūda

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ۝١٨

He reflected and made a programme.

innahu fakkara waqaddar

فَقُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝١٩

So be he killed, how he made a programme,

faqutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝٢٠

again be he killed, how he made a programme.

thumma qutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ۝٢١

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ۝٢٢

then he frowned and made a face,

thumma ʿabasa wabasar

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ ۝٢٣

then he turned away considering himself great,

thumma adbara wa-is'takbar

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ یُؤۡثَرُ ۝٢٤

then said, “This is nothing but magic derived from the ancient,

faqāla in hādhā illā siḥ'run yu'thar

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٥

this is nothing but the statement of man.”

in hādhā illā qawlu l-bashar

سَأُصۡلِیهِ سَقَرَ ۝٢٦

I will make him enter hell.

sa-uṣ'līhi saqar

وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ۝٢٧

And what will make you realize what hell is?

wamā adrāka mā saqar

لَا تُبۡقِی وَلَا تَذَرُ ۝٢٨

It does not let (anything) to remain nor does it spare.

lā tub'qī walā tadhar

لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٩

It will burn and darken the skin (of man).

lawwāḥatun lil'bashar

عَلَیۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ ۝٣٠

Over it are nineteen.

wamā jaʿalnā aṣḥāba l-nāri illā malāikatan wamā jaʿalnā ʿiddatahum illā fit'natan lilladhīna kafarū liyastayqina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wayazdāda alladhīna āmanū īmānan walā yartāba alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wal-mu'minūna waliyaqūla alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wal-kāfirūna mādhā arāda l-lahu bihādhā mathalan kadhālika yuḍillu l-lahu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu wamā yaʿlamu junūda rabbika illā huwa wamā hiya illā dhik'rā lil'bashar

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِیَسۡتَیۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَیَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَلَا یَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِیَقُولَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَاۤ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِیَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣١

And We have not appointed the guardians of hell, other than the angels, and We have not fixed their number but for the affliction of those who do not believe. So that those who are given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in belief and those who were given the book and the believers may not be doubtful. And those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say, “What does Allah intend by this similitude?” Thus Allah leaves to stray whom He wills and He guides whom He wills and no one knows the forces of your Fosterer except He Himself and this is nothing but a reminder to man.

Wama jaAAalna as-haba alnnari illa mala-ikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmu/minoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

2 The Warning

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ ۝٣٢

No, by the moon,

kallā wal-qamar

وَٱلَّیۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ ۝٣٣

and the night when it retreats,

wa-al-layli idh adbar

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَاۤ أَسۡفَرَ ۝٣٤

and the day when it shines,

wal-ṣub'ḥi idhā asfar

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ ۝٣٥

it (the news of hell) is certainly a great

innahā la-iḥ'dā l-kubar

نَذِیرࣰا لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣٦

warning to man,

nadhīran lil'bashar

لِمَن شَاۤءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن یَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ یَتَأَخَّرَ ۝٣٧

to him among you who wills to advance or remain behind.

liman shāa minkum an yataqaddama aw yata-akhar

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِینَةٌ ۝٣٨

Every soul is held in pledge (security) for that which it earned

kullu nafsin bimā kasabat rahīnatu

إِلَّاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٩

except the companions of the right hand,

illā aṣḥāba l-yamīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٤٠

in gardens, asking each other,

fī jannātin yatasāalūn

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٤١

about the criminals,

mā salakakum fī saqar

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِی سَقَرَ ۝٤٢

“What has brought you into the hell?”

Ma salakakum fee saqara

قَالُوا۟ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٤٣

They will say, “We were not of those who offered worship (salat)

qālū lam naku mina l-muṣalīn

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِینَ ۝٤٤

and we did not feed the poor

walam naku nuṭ'ʿimu l-mis'kīn

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَاۤىِٕضِینَ ۝٤٥

and we used to involve ourselves in idle talk with those involved in idle talk,

wakunnā nakhūḍu maʿa l-khāiḍīn

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٤٦

and we used to deny the day of judgment

wakunnā nukadhibu biyawmi l-dīn

حَتَّىٰۤ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٤٧

till (death) which is certain came to us.”

ḥattā atānā l-yaqīn

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِینَ ۝٤٨

So the mediation of mediators will not be of benefit to them.

famā tanfaʿuhum shafāʿatu l-shāfiʿīn

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤٩

So what is (wrong) with them that they turn away from the reminder,

famā lahum ʿani l-tadhkirati muʿ'riḍīn

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ ۝٥٠

as if they are frightened asses,

ka-annahum ḥumurun mus'tanfiratu

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ ۝٥١

fleeing from a lion?

farrat min qaswarati

بَلۡ یُرِیدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ ۝٥٢

No, every man from among them desires that he should be given open pages.

bal yurīdu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yu'tā ṣuḥufan munasharata

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا یَخَافُونَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ ۝٥٣

No, they do not fear the hereafter.

kallā bal lā yakhāfūna l-ākhirat

كَلَّاۤ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ ۝٥٤

No, it is certainly a reminder,

kallā innahu tadhkiratu

فَمَن شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ۝٥٥

so whoever wills may mind it,

faman shāa dhakarah

وَمَا یَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ ۝٥٦

and they do not mind unless Allah wills, He is worthy to be feared and capable to be Protectively Forgiving.

wamā yadhkurūna illā an yashāa l-lahu huwa ahlu l-taqwā wa-ahlu l-maghfirat
