1 The Prophet enjoined to warn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ ۝١

Oh you wrapped up,

yāayyuhā l-mudathir

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ ۝٢

Get up and warn,

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ ۝٣

And exalt your Lord,

warabbaka fakabbi

وَثِیَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ ۝٤

And keep clean,

wathiyābaka faṭahhi

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ ۝٥

And shun filth,

wal-ruj'za fa-uh'ju

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ ۝٦

And do not grant just to get more,

walā tamnun tastakthir

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ ۝٧

And have patience for your Lord,

walirabbika fa-iṣ'bi

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِی ٱلنَّاقُورِ ۝٨

Then when the horn is blown,

fa-idhā nuqira fī l-nāqūr

فَذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَوۡمٌ عَسِیرٌ ۝٩

That will be a difficult day,

fadhālika yawma-idhin yawmun ʿasīru

عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ غَیۡرُ یَسِیرࣲ ۝١٠

Not easy for those who reject (the truth),

dharnī waman khalaqtu waḥīda

ذَرۡنِی وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِیدࣰا ۝١١

Leave Me and whom I alone created,

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰا مَّمۡدُودࣰا ۝١٢

And gave him wealth in abundance,

wajaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūda

وَبَنِینَ شُهُودࣰا ۝١٣

And children as witnesses,

wabanīna shuhūda

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِیدࣰا ۝١٤

And gave him comfort,

wamahhadttu lahu tamhīda

ثُمَّ یَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِیدَ ۝١٥

Then he hopes for more.

thumma yaṭmaʿu an azīd

كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَایَـٰتِنَا عَنِیدࣰا ۝١٦

But no, he resisted Our signs.

kallā innahu kāna liāyātinā ʿanīda

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ۝١٧

I will make him suffer hardship.

sa-ur'hiquhu ṣaʿūda

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ۝١٨

He pondered and evaluated,

innahu fakkara waqaddar

فَقُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝١٩

But how badly he evaluated,

faqutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝٢٠

Again, how badly he evaluated,

thumma qutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ۝٢١

Then he looked,

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ۝٢٢

Then he frowned and showed displeasure,

thumma ʿabasa wabasar

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ ۝٢٣

Then he turned away and became arrogant,

thumma adbara wa-is'takbar

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ یُؤۡثَرُ ۝٢٤

And said: this is only handed down magic,

faqāla in hādhā illā siḥ'run yu'thar

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٥

It is only the speech of a human.

in hādhā illā qawlu l-bashar

سَأُصۡلِیهِ سَقَرَ ۝٢٦

We will enter him into a fire.

sa-uṣ'līhi saqar

وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ۝٢٧

And how do you know what fire it is?

wamā adrāka mā saqar

لَا تُبۡقِی وَلَا تَذَرُ ۝٢٨

It does not leave anything nor desist.

lā tub'qī walā tadhar

لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٩

It disfigures humans.

lawwāḥatun lil'bashar

عَلَیۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ ۝٣٠

Nineteen are set over it.

wamā jaʿalnā aṣḥāba l-nāri illā malāikatan wamā jaʿalnā ʿiddatahum illā fit'natan lilladhīna kafarū liyastayqina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wayazdāda alladhīna āmanū īmānan walā yartāba alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wal-mu'minūna waliyaqūla alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wal-kāfirūna mādhā arāda l-lahu bihādhā mathalan kadhālika yuḍillu l-lahu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu wamā yaʿlamu junūda rabbika illā huwa wamā hiya illā dhik'rā lil'bashar

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِیَسۡتَیۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَیَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَلَا یَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِیَقُولَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَاۤ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِیَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣١

And We only appointed angels as wardens of the fire, and We only made their number a test for those who reject (the truth), so that those who were given the book would be certain and the believers would increase in faith and those who were given the book and the believers would not doubt, but those with a disease in their hearts and those who reject (the truth) would say: what does Allah want by this similitude? This is how We let go astray whom We please and guide whom We please, and nobody knows the forces of your Lord but He, and it is only a reminder for mankind.

Wama jaAAalna as-haba alnnari illa mala-ikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmu/minoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

2 The Warning

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ ۝٣٢

But no, by the moon,

kallā wal-qamar

وَٱلَّیۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ ۝٣٣

And the night when it recedes,

wa-al-layli idh adbar

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَاۤ أَسۡفَرَ ۝٣٤

And the morning when it turns bright,

wal-ṣub'ḥi idhā asfar

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ ۝٣٥

It is one of the great signs,

innahā la-iḥ'dā l-kubar

نَذِیرࣰا لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣٦

A warning to mankind,

nadhīran lil'bashar

لِمَن شَاۤءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن یَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ یَتَأَخَّرَ ۝٣٧

For whoever of you wants to go ahead or stay behind,

liman shāa minkum an yataqaddama aw yata-akhar

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِینَةٌ ۝٣٨

Every soul is liable for what it commits,

kullu nafsin bimā kasabat rahīnatu

إِلَّاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٩

Except for the companions of the right,

illā aṣḥāba l-yamīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٤٠

They ask each other in gardens,

fī jannātin yatasāalūn

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٤١

About the sinful,

mā salakakum fī saqar

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِی سَقَرَ ۝٤٢

What lead you to the fire?

Ma salakakum fee saqara

قَالُوا۟ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٤٣

They will say: we were not of those who pray,

qālū lam naku mina l-muṣalīn

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِینَ ۝٤٤

And we did not feed the poor,

walam naku nuṭ'ʿimu l-mis'kīn

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَاۤىِٕضِینَ ۝٤٥

And we joked with those who joked,

wakunnā nakhūḍu maʿa l-khāiḍīn

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٤٦

And we denied the day of repayment,

wakunnā nukadhibu biyawmi l-dīn

حَتَّىٰۤ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٤٧

Until certainty reached us.

ḥattā atānā l-yaqīn

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِینَ ۝٤٨

So the intercession of those who intercede will not benefit them.

famā tanfaʿuhum shafāʿatu l-shāfiʿīn

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤٩

So what is the matter with them that they turn away from the reminder?

famā lahum ʿani l-tadhkirati muʿ'riḍīn

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ ۝٥٠

As if they were frightened donkeys,

ka-annahum ḥumurun mus'tanfiratu

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ ۝٥١

Running away from the whip,

farrat min qaswarati

بَلۡ یُرِیدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ ۝٥٢

But each man amongst them wants to be given his own scripture.

bal yurīdu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yu'tā ṣuḥufan munasharata

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا یَخَافُونَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ ۝٥٣

But no, they do not fear the hereafter.

kallā bal lā yakhāfūna l-ākhirat

كَلَّاۤ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ ۝٥٤

No, it is a reminder.

kallā innahu tadhkiratu

فَمَن شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ۝٥٥

So whoever pleases can remember it.

faman shāa dhakarah

وَمَا یَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ ۝٥٦

And they will only remember it if Allah pleases, He is in charge of awareness and of forgiveness.

wamā yadhkurūna illā an yashāa l-lahu huwa ahlu l-taqwā wa-ahlu l-maghfirat
