1 The Prophet enjoined to warn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ ۝١

O you wrapped in a garment!

yāayyuhā l-mudathir

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ ۝٢

Stand up, then warn.

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ ۝٣

And your Lord, then magnify.

warabbaka fakabbi

وَثِیَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ ۝٤

And your garments, then purify.

wathiyābaka faṭahhi

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ ۝٥

And uncleaness, then avoid.

wal-ruj'za fa-uh'ju

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ ۝٦

And do not bestow favour desiring much.

walā tamnun tastakthir

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ ۝٧

And for your Lord then be patient.

walirabbika fa-iṣ'bi

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِی ٱلنَّاقُورِ ۝٨

And when the horn is blown in,

fa-idhā nuqira fī l-nāqūr

فَذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَوۡمٌ عَسِیرٌ ۝٩

And that, that day is a difficult day.

fadhālika yawma-idhin yawmun ʿasīru

عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ غَیۡرُ یَسِیرࣲ ۝١٠

On the disbelievers, not easy.

dharnī waman khalaqtu waḥīda

ذَرۡنِی وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِیدࣰا ۝١١

Leave Me and whom I created alone,

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰا مَّمۡدُودࣰا ۝١٢

And made for him much wealth,

wajaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūda

وَبَنِینَ شُهُودࣰا ۝١٣

And children present,

wabanīna shuhūda

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِیدࣰا ۝١٤

And I made affairs easy for him.

wamahhadttu lahu tamhīda

ثُمَّ یَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِیدَ ۝١٥

Then he desires that I should increase.

thumma yaṭmaʿu an azīd

كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَایَـٰتِنَا عَنِیدࣰا ۝١٦

Not so, indeed he was stubborn to Our signs.

kallā innahu kāna liāyātinā ʿanīda

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ۝١٧

Soon I will impose on him a difficult punishment.

sa-ur'hiquhu ṣaʿūda

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ۝١٨

Indeed, he thought and he meditated.

innahu fakkara waqaddar

فَقُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝١٩

So killed is he, how he meditated.

faqutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝٢٠

Again, killed is he, how he meditated.

thumma qutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ۝٢١

Then he looked;

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ۝٢٢

Then he frowned and frowned;

thumma ʿabasa wabasar

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ ۝٢٣

Then he turned his back, and was proud,

thumma adbara wa-is'takbar

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ یُؤۡثَرُ ۝٢٤

Then he said, 'This is not except transmitted magic.

faqāla in hādhā illā siḥ'run yu'thar

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٥

This is not except the speech of mortals.'

in hādhā illā qawlu l-bashar

سَأُصۡلِیهِ سَقَرَ ۝٢٦

Soon I will broil him in Hell.

sa-uṣ'līhi saqar

وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ۝٢٧

And what will make you know what Hell is?

wamā adrāka mā saqar

لَا تُبۡقِی وَلَا تَذَرُ ۝٢٨

It spares not and it leaves not;

lā tub'qī walā tadhar

لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٩

Scorching the skin;

lawwāḥatun lil'bashar

عَلَیۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ ۝٣٠

Over it are nineteen.

wamā jaʿalnā aṣḥāba l-nāri illā malāikatan wamā jaʿalnā ʿiddatahum illā fit'natan lilladhīna kafarū liyastayqina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wayazdāda alladhīna āmanū īmānan walā yartāba alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wal-mu'minūna waliyaqūla alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wal-kāfirūna mādhā arāda l-lahu bihādhā mathalan kadhālika yuḍillu l-lahu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu wamā yaʿlamu junūda rabbika illā huwa wamā hiya illā dhik'rā lil'bashar

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِیَسۡتَیۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَیَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَلَا یَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِیَقُولَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَاۤ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِیَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣١

And We have not made keepers of the fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve; that those who were given the Book may be certain; and that those who believe may increase in faith; and that those who were given the Book and the believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts is sickness, and the disbelievers may say, 'What does God desire with this similitude?' Thus God leads astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none know the armies of your Lord but He. And it is not except a Reminder to the mortals.

Wama jaAAalna as-haba alnnari illa mala-ikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmu/minoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

2 The Warning

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ ۝٣٢

Not so, by the moon.

kallā wal-qamar

وَٱلَّیۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ ۝٣٣

By the night when it turns back.

wa-al-layli idh adbar

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَاۤ أَسۡفَرَ ۝٣٤

By the morning when it shines.

wal-ṣub'ḥi idhā asfar

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ ۝٣٥

Indeed, it is surely one of the greatest,

innahā la-iḥ'dā l-kubar

نَذِیرࣰا لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣٦

A warning to the mortals,

nadhīran lil'bashar

لِمَن شَاۤءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن یَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ یَتَأَخَّرَ ۝٣٧

To he among you who willed that he precede or lag behind.

liman shāa minkum an yataqaddama aw yata-akhar

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِینَةٌ ۝٣٨

Every soul is pledged for what it earned,

kullu nafsin bimā kasabat rahīnatu

إِلَّاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٩

Except the fellows of the right;

illā aṣḥāba l-yamīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٤٠

In gardens they will ask one another

fī jannātin yatasāalūn

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٤١

About the sinners.

mā salakakum fī saqar

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِی سَقَرَ ۝٤٢

'What made you enter Hell?'

Ma salakakum fee saqara

قَالُوا۟ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٤٣

They said, 'We were not of those who prayed,

qālū lam naku mina l-muṣalīn

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِینَ ۝٤٤

And we did not use to feed the poor,

walam naku nuṭ'ʿimu l-mis'kīn

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَاۤىِٕضِینَ ۝٤٥

And we used to plunge into vain discourse with those who plunged into vain discourse,

wakunnā nakhūḍu maʿa l-khāiḍīn

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٤٦

And we used to say the Day of Judgment was a lie

wakunnā nukadhibu biyawmi l-dīn

حَتَّىٰۤ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٤٧

Until the certainty came to us.'

ḥattā atānā l-yaqīn

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِینَ ۝٤٨

So the intercession of the intercessors will not benefit them.

famā tanfaʿuhum shafāʿatu l-shāfiʿīn

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤٩

So what ails them from the Reminder turning away

famā lahum ʿani l-tadhkirati muʿ'riḍīn

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ ۝٥٠

As if they were frightened asses

ka-annahum ḥumurun mus'tanfiratu

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ ۝٥١

Fleeing from a lion?

farrat min qaswarati

بَلۡ یُرِیدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ ۝٥٢

Nay, every man among them desires that he be given books spread out.

bal yurīdu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yu'tā ṣuḥufan munasharata

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا یَخَافُونَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ ۝٥٣

Not so, nay they do not fear the hereafter.

kallā bal lā yakhāfūna l-ākhirat

كَلَّاۤ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ ۝٥٤

Not so, indeed, it is a Reminder.

kallā innahu tadhkiratu

فَمَن شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ۝٥٥

So he who willed remembered it;

faman shāa dhakarah

وَمَا یَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ ۝٥٦

And they will not remember except that God wills. He is worthy of the piety and worthy of the forgiveness.

wamā yadhkurūna illā an yashāa l-lahu huwa ahlu l-taqwā wa-ahlu l-maghfirat
