1 The Prophet enjoined to warn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ ۝١

O you cloaked one (who has preferred solitude)

yāayyuhā l-mudathir

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ ۝٢

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ ۝٣

And declare your Lord’s (indescribable and incomparable) greatness

warabbaka fakabbi

وَثِیَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ ۝٤

And keep your clothing clean

wathiyābaka faṭahhi

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ ۝٥

Keep away from all pollution

wal-ruj'za fa-uh'ju

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ ۝٦

Do not consider your fulfillment of these orders as a kindness (to God and people)

walā tamnun tastakthir

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ ۝٧

And for the sake of your Lord be patient (in fulfilling your duty toward God and people)

walirabbika fa-iṣ'bi

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِی ٱلنَّاقُورِ ۝٨

Then, when the Horn is sounded

fa-idhā nuqira fī l-nāqūr

فَذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَوۡمٌ عَسِیرٌ ۝٩

That Day will be a day of hardship

fadhālika yawma-idhin yawmun ʿasīru

عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ غَیۡرُ یَسِیرࣲ ۝١٠

For the unbelievers, not easy

dharnī waman khalaqtu waḥīda

ذَرۡنِی وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِیدࣰا ۝١١

Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created alone

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰا مَّمۡدُودࣰا ۝١٢

And I enabled for him abundant wealth

wajaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūda

وَبَنِینَ شُهُودࣰا ۝١٣

And children around him as means of power

wabanīna shuhūda

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِیدࣰا ۝١٤

And I have granted him all means and status for a comfortable life

wamahhadttu lahu tamhīda

ثُمَّ یَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِیدَ ۝١٥

And yet, he desires that I should give more

thumma yaṭmaʿu an azīd

كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَایَـٰتِنَا عَنِیدࣰا ۝١٦

By no means! Surely he has been in obstinate opposition to Our Revelations

kallā innahu kāna liāyātinā ʿanīda

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ۝١٧

I will oblige him to a strenuous climb

sa-ur'hiquhu ṣaʿūda

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ۝١٨

He pondered and he calculated (how he could disprove the Qur’an in people’s sight)

innahu fakkara waqaddar

فَقُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝١٩

Be away from God’s mercy, how he calculated

faqutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ۝٢٠

Yea, may God preserve him from the evil eye! how he calculated

thumma qutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ۝٢١

Then he looked around (in the manner of one who will decide on a matter about which he is asked)

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ۝٢٢

Then he frowned and scowled

thumma ʿabasa wabasar

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ ۝٢٣

Then he turned his back and (despite inwardly acknowledging the Qur’an’s Divine origin), grew in arrogance

thumma adbara wa-is'takbar

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ یُؤۡثَرُ ۝٢٤

And he said: "This is nothing but sorcery (of a sort transmitted from sorcerers) from old times

faqāla in hādhā illā siḥ'run yu'thar

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٥

"This is nothing but the word of a mortal."

in hādhā illā qawlu l-bashar

سَأُصۡلِیهِ سَقَرَ ۝٢٦

I will make him enter a pit of Hell

sa-uṣ'līhi saqar

وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ۝٢٧

What enables you to perceive what that pit is

wamā adrāka mā saqar

لَا تُبۡقِی وَلَا تَذَرُ ۝٢٨

It leaves none (but entirely burns everyone of those thrown into it), nor does it spare anyone (so that they might die and escape)

lā tub'qī walā tadhar

لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٢٩

It scorches up the skin

lawwāḥatun lil'bashar

عَلَیۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ ۝٣٠

Over it there are nineteen (keepers)

wamā jaʿalnā aṣḥāba l-nāri illā malāikatan wamā jaʿalnā ʿiddatahum illā fit'natan lilladhīna kafarū liyastayqina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wayazdāda alladhīna āmanū īmānan walā yartāba alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wal-mu'minūna waliyaqūla alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wal-kāfirūna mādhā arāda l-lahu bihādhā mathalan kadhālika yuḍillu l-lahu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu wamā yaʿlamu junūda rabbika illā huwa wamā hiya illā dhik'rā lil'bashar

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِیَسۡتَیۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَیَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَلَا یَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِیَقُولَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَاۤ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِیَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣١

We have appointed none but angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have not caused their number to be anything but a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who were granted the Book before may become certain (that Muhammad, who explains everything revealed to him without any hesitation in the face of all antagonism and derision, is God’s Messenger), and those who believe may grow more firm in faith; and that both they who were granted the Book before and the believers may feel no doubt at all; and those in whose hearts there is a sickness and the unbelievers may say: "What does God mean by this description?" Thus God leads astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. None knows your Lord’s hosts except He. All this is but a reminder to the mortals (so that they may take heed and act accordingly)

Wama jaAAalna as-haba alnnari illa mala-ikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmu/minoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

2 The Warning

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ ۝٣٢

No indeed (the Qur’an is not as the unbelievers claim)! By the moon

kallā wal-qamar

وَٱلَّیۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ ۝٣٣

And by the night when it retreats

wa-al-layli idh adbar

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَاۤ أَسۡفَرَ ۝٣٤

And by the morning when it shines forth

wal-ṣub'ḥi idhā asfar

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ ۝٣٥

Surely it (the Qur’an) is of the greatest (of God’s signs)

innahā la-iḥ'dā l-kubar

نَذِیرࣰا لِّلۡبَشَرِ ۝٣٦

A warning for humankind

nadhīran lil'bashar

لِمَن شَاۤءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن یَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ یَتَأَخَّرَ ۝٣٧

For everyone of you, whether he goes forward (by choosing faith and good deeds) or hangs back (because his choice of unbelief and sin pulls him away from the Straight Path)

liman shāa minkum an yataqaddama aw yata-akhar

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِینَةٌ ۝٣٨

Every person is held in pledge for what he earns (through his deeds)

kullu nafsin bimā kasabat rahīnatu

إِلَّاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٩

Except the people of the Right (the people of happiness and prosperity who receive their Records in their right hands. God will forgive them and reward them with much more than they earned)

illā aṣḥāba l-yamīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٤٠

Dwelling in Gardens (whose beauty cannot be perceived while in the world), they will put questions to one anothe

fī jannātin yatasāalūn

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٤١

About the disbelieving criminals, (and convey the answers they give)

mā salakakum fī saqar

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِی سَقَرَ ۝٤٢

"What has brought you into the pit?"

Ma salakakum fee saqara

قَالُوا۟ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٤٣

They will reply: "We were not of those who prayed (who turn to God in sincere worship)

qālū lam naku mina l-muṣalīn

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِینَ ۝٤٤

"Nor did we use to feed the destitute

walam naku nuṭ'ʿimu l-mis'kīn

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَاۤىِٕضِینَ ۝٤٥

"We used to plunge (in falsehood and sin) together with those who plunged (in it)

wakunnā nakhūḍu maʿa l-khāiḍīn

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٤٦

"And we used to deny the (coming of the) Day of Judgment

wakunnā nukadhibu biyawmi l-dīn

حَتَّىٰۤ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٤٧

"Until what is certain to come did come upon us."

ḥattā atānā l-yaqīn

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِینَ ۝٤٨

And so, of no benefit to them will be the intercession of any who are entitled to intercede, (even if they are allowed to intercede)

famā tanfaʿuhum shafāʿatu l-shāfiʿīn

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤٩

What, then, is the matter with them that they turn away in aversion from the Reminder (the Qur’an)

famā lahum ʿani l-tadhkirati muʿ'riḍīn

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ ۝٥٠

As though they were frightened wild donkey

ka-annahum ḥumurun mus'tanfiratu

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ ۝٥١

Fleeing from a lion

farrat min qaswarati

بَلۡ یُرِیدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ ۝٥٢

Indeed, every one of them desires that he should be given a Book (particular to him) opened out

bal yurīdu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yu'tā ṣuḥufan munasharata

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا یَخَافُونَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ ۝٥٣

By no means! Indeed, they do not (believe in and, therefore, do not) fear the Hereafter

kallā bal lā yakhāfūna l-ākhirat

كَلَّاۤ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ ۝٥٤

By no means! This (Qur’an) is a reminder and admonition (sufficient for all)

kallā innahu tadhkiratu

فَمَن شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ۝٥٥

So, whoever wills receives admonition and takes heed

faman shāa dhakarah

وَمَا یَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ ۝٥٦

Yet they will not receive admonition and take heed unless God wills; He is the Lord of righteousness and piety, and the Lord of forgiveness

wamā yadhkurūna illā an yashāa l-lahu huwa ahlu l-taqwā wa-ahlu l-maghfirat
