1 Revelation dispels darkness

الۤرۚ كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَیۡكَ لِتُخۡرِجَ ٱلنَّاسَ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهِمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطِ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡحَمِیدِ ۝١

Alif Laam Raa. A book which We have sent down to you so that, by the permission of their Fosterer, you may bring out mankind from the darkness (and lead them) towards the light, towards the path of the Mighty, the Praised.

alif-lam-ra kitābun anzalnāhu ilayka litukh'rija l-nāsa mina l-ẓulumāti ilā l-nūri bi-idh'ni rabbihim ilā ṣirāṭi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥamīd

ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِی لَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ مِنۡ عَذَابࣲ شَدِیدٍ ۝٢

Allah is He, Whose is whatsoever is in the skies and whatsoever is in the earth; and sorrowful will be the state of the infidels due to a severe punishment.

al-lahi alladhī lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wawaylun lil'kāfirīna min ʿadhābin shadīdi

ٱلَّذِینَ یَسۡتَحِبُّونَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا عَلَى ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَیَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَبۡغُونَهَا عِوَجًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی ضَلَـٰلِۭ بَعِیدࣲ ۝٣

Those who love the life of this world more than the hereafter and turn away (people) from Allah’s way and seek crookedness in it, they are far astray.

alladhīna yastaḥibbūna l-ḥayata l-dun'yā ʿalā l-ākhirati wayaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi wayabghūnahā ʿiwajan ulāika fī ḍalālin baʿīdi

وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا بِلِسَانِ قَوۡمِهِۦ لِیُبَیِّنَ لَهُمۡۖ فَیُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٤

And We did not send any messenger (with a message) but in the language of his people that he might make (things) clear to them. Then Allah leaves in error whom He wills and guides whom He wills and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

wamā arsalnā min rasūlin illā bilisāni qawmihi liyubayyina lahum fayuḍillu l-lahu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ أَنۡ أَخۡرِجۡ قَوۡمَكَ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ وَذَكِّرۡهُم بِأَیَّىٰمِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارࣲ شَكُورࣲ ۝٥

And We had sent Musa with Our signs (saying) that, “Bring out your people from the darkness towards the light and remind them of the days (favours) of Allah, certainly in that there are signs for every patient, grateful one.”

walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā an akhrij qawmaka mina l-ẓulumāti ilā l-nūri wadhakkir'hum bi-ayyāmi l-lahi inna fī dhālika laāyātin likulli ṣabbārin shakūri

وَإِذۡ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوۡمِهِ ٱذۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنجَىٰكُم مِّنۡ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ یَسُومُونَكُمۡ سُوۤءَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ وَیُذَبِّحُونَ أَبۡنَاۤءَكُمۡ وَیَسۡتَحۡیُونَ نِسَاۤءَكُمۡۚ وَفِی ذَ ٰلِكُم بَلَاۤءࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ عَظِیمࣱ ۝٦

And when Musa said to his people, “Remember Allah’s favour on you when He delivered you from the people of Firawn who subjected you to severe punishment, when they killed your sons and let your women live, and in that there was a great trial from your Fosterer.

wa-idh qāla mūsā liqawmihi udh'kurū niʿ'mata l-lahi ʿalaykum idh anjākum min āli fir'ʿawna yasūmūnakum sūa l-ʿadhābi wayudhabbiḥūna abnāakum wayastaḥyūna nisāakum wafī dhālikum balāon min rabbikum ʿaẓīmu

2 Truth is rejected first

وَإِذۡ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمۡ لَىِٕن شَكَرۡتُمۡ لَأَزِیدَنَّكُمۡۖ وَلَىِٕن كَفَرۡتُمۡ إِنَّ عَذَابِی لَشَدِیدࣱ ۝٧

And when your Fosterer announced: If you are grateful I will definitely give you more, but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is certainly severe.”

wa-idh ta-adhana rabbukum la-in shakartum la-azīdannakum wala-in kafartum inna ʿadhābī lashadīdu

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰۤ إِن تَكۡفُرُوۤا۟ أَنتُمۡ وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَنِیٌّ حَمِیدٌ ۝٨

And Musa said, “If you are ungrateful, you and all in the earth together, (even) then Allah is certainly Independent, Praised.”

waqāla mūsā in takfurū antum waman fī l-arḍi jamīʿan fa-inna l-laha laghaniyyun ḥamīdu

أَلَمۡ یَأۡتِكُمۡ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ قَوۡمِ نُوحࣲ وَعَادࣲ وَثَمُودَ وَٱلَّذِینَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُهُمۡ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُۚ جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَرَدُّوۤا۟ أَیۡدِیَهُمۡ فِیۤ أَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا كَفَرۡنَا بِمَاۤ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ وَإِنَّا لَفِی شَكࣲّ مِّمَّا تَدۡعُونَنَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ مُرِیبࣲ ۝٩

Has the news of those before you not come to you: people of Nuh and Aad and Samood and those after them? They do not know them but Allah (knows). Their messengers came to them with clear proofs but they thrust their hands in their mouths and said, “We certainly do not believe in that which you are sent with, and we are certainly in doubt causing restlessness, about that which you call us to.”

alam yatikum naba-u alladhīna min qablikum qawmi nūḥin waʿādin wathamūda wa-alladhīna min baʿdihim lā yaʿlamuhum illā l-lahu jāathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti faraddū aydiyahum fī afwāhihim waqālū innā kafarnā bimā ur'sil'tum bihi wa-innā lafī shakkin mimmā tadʿūnanā ilayhi murībi

۞ قَالَتۡ رُسُلُهُمۡ أَفِی ٱللَّهِ شَكࣱّ فَاطِرِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ یَدۡعُوكُمۡ لِیَغۡفِرَ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمۡ وَیُؤَخِّرَكُمۡ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّىۚ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ أَنتُمۡ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا تُرِیدُونَ أَن تَصُدُّونَا عَمَّا كَانَ یَعۡبُدُ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا فَأۡتُونَا بِسُلۡطَـٰنࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٠

Their messengers said, “Is there a doubt about Allah, the Initiator of the creation of the skies and the earth? He invites you to protectively forgive you your sins and to give you time till an appointed term.” They said, “You are nothing but men like us, you intend to turn us away from that which our fathers used to serve (worship), so bring to us some clear authority.” othing but men like us, you intend to turn us away from that which our fathers used to serve (worship), so bring to us some clear authority.”

qālat rusuluhum afī l-lahi shakkun fāṭiri l-samāwāti wal-arḍi yadʿūkum liyaghfira lakum min dhunūbikum wayu-akhirakum ilā ajalin musamman qālū in antum illā basharun mith'lunā turīdūna an taṣuddūnā ʿammā kāna yaʿbudu ābāunā fatūnā bisul'ṭānin mubīni

قَالَتۡ لَهُمۡ رُسُلُهُمۡ إِن نَّحۡنُ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَمُنُّ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَمَا كَانَ لَنَاۤ أَن نَّأۡتِیَكُم بِسُلۡطَـٰنٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١١

Their messengers said to them, “We are (of course) nothing but men like you but Allah bestows (his) favour on whom He wills of His servants, and it is not possible for us to come to you with an authority without the permission of Allah, and therefore, let the believers put their trust in Allah.

qālat lahum rusuluhum in naḥnu illā basharun mith'lukum walākinna l-laha yamunnu ʿalā man yashāu min ʿibādihi wamā kāna lanā an natiyakum bisul'ṭānin illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

وَمَا لَنَاۤ أَلَّا نَتَوَكَّلَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ وَقَدۡ هَدَىٰنَا سُبُلَنَاۚ وَلَنَصۡبِرَنَّ عَلَىٰ مَاۤ ءَاذَیۡتُمُونَاۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُتَوَكِّلُونَ ۝١٢

And what (reason) have we that we should not put our trust in Allah when He has guided us to our ways? And we will definitely be patient on the harm which you do to us, and therefore, let those who trust, put their trust in Allah.”

wamā lanā allā natawakkala ʿalā l-lahi waqad hadānā subulanā walanaṣbiranna ʿalā mā ādhaytumūnā waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mutawakilūn

3 Opposition is at last destroyed

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِرُسُلِهِمۡ لَنُخۡرِجَنَّكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِنَاۤ أَوۡ لَتَعُودُنَّ فِی مِلَّتِنَاۖ فَأَوۡحَىٰۤ إِلَیۡهِمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ لَنُهۡلِكَنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٣

And those who did not believe said to their messengers, “We will definitely drive you out from our land or else you should return to our religious dictates.” So their Fosterer communicated to them, “We will definitely destroy the unjust,

waqāla alladhīna kafarū lirusulihim lanukh'rijannakum min arḍinā aw lataʿūdunna fī millatinā fa-awḥā ilayhim rabbuhum lanuh'likanna l-ẓālimīn

وَلَنُسۡكِنَنَّكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ لِمَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامِی وَخَافَ وَعِیدِ ۝١٤

and We will definitely make you dwell in the land after them.” That’s for him who fears standing before Me and fears My threat.

walanus'kinannakumu l-arḍa min baʿdihim dhālika liman khāfa maqāmī wakhāfa waʿīd

وَٱسۡتَفۡتَحُوا۟ وَخَابَ كُلُّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِیدࣲ ۝١٥

And the (messengers) sought for victory, so every compelling opponent was defeated.

wa-is'taftaḥū wakhāba kullu jabbārin ʿanīdi

مِّن وَرَاۤىِٕهِۦ جَهَنَّمُ وَیُسۡقَىٰ مِن مَّاۤءࣲ صَدِیدࣲ ۝١٦

Hell is before him and he will be made to drink from boiling water.

min warāihi jahannamu wayus'qā min māin ṣadīdi

یَتَجَرَّعُهُۥ وَلَا یَكَادُ یُسِیغُهُۥ وَیَأۡتِیهِ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ مِن كُلِّ مَكَانࣲ وَمَا هُوَ بِمَیِّتࣲۖ وَمِن وَرَاۤىِٕهِۦ عَذَابٌ غَلِیظࣱ ۝١٧

He will drink it little by little but he will not be able to swallow it, and death will come to him from every place yet he will not die, and before him there will be a harsh punishment.

yatajarraʿuhu walā yakādu yusīghuhu wayatīhi l-mawtu min kulli makānin wamā huwa bimayyitin wamin warāihi ʿadhābun ghalīẓu

مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمۡۖ أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡ كَرَمَادٍ ٱشۡتَدَّتۡ بِهِ ٱلرِّیحُ فِی یَوۡمٍ عَاصِفࣲۖ لَّا یَقۡدِرُونَ مِمَّا كَسَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءࣲۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلضَّلَـٰلُ ٱلۡبَعِیدُ ۝١٨

The likeness of those who do not believe in their Fosterer (is like those) whose works will be like ashes on which the wind blows hard on a stormy day. They will not have power on anything of that which they earned. That (in fact), will be going far astray (from success).

mathalu alladhīna kafarū birabbihim aʿmāluhum karamādin ish'taddat bihi l-rīḥu fī yawmin ʿāṣifin lā yaqdirūna mimmā kasabū ʿalā shayin dhālika huwa l-ḍalālu l-baʿīd

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ إِن یَشَأۡ یُذۡهِبۡكُمۡ وَیَأۡتِ بِخَلۡقࣲ جَدِیدࣲ ۝١٩

Do you not see that Allah created the skies and the earth in reality? * If He wills He can remove you and bring in a new creation, * The universe is real, not an illusion.

alam tara anna l-laha khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi in yasha yudh'hib'kum wayati bikhalqin jadīdi

وَمَا ذَ ٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ بِعَزِیزࣲ ۝٢٠

and that is not mighty for Allah.

wamā dhālika ʿalā l-lahi biʿazīzi

وَبَرَزُوا۟ لِلَّهِ جَمِیعࣰا فَقَالَ ٱلضُّعَفَـٰۤؤُا۟ لِلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوۤا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمۡ تَبَعࣰا فَهَلۡ أَنتُم مُّغۡنُونَ عَنَّا مِنۡ عَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ قَالُوا۟ لَوۡ هَدَىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ لَهَدَیۡنَـٰكُمۡۖ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَجَزِعۡنَاۤ أَمۡ صَبَرۡنَا مَا لَنَا مِن مَّحِیصࣲ ۝٢١

And they will all appear before Allah. Then the weak will say to those who were considered great, “We were your followers, so can you keep us safe from anything of Allah’s punishment?” They will say, “Had Allah guided us we would have guided you, (now) it is the same to us whether we are impatient or patient, there is no way of escape for us.”

wabarazū lillahi jamīʿan faqāla l-ḍuʿafāu lilladhīna is'takbarū innā kunnā lakum tabaʿan fahal antum mugh'nūna ʿannā min ʿadhābi l-lahi min shayin qālū law hadānā l-lahu lahadaynākum sawāon ʿalaynā ajaziʿ'nā am ṣabarnā mā lanā min maḥīṣi

4 Truth is Confirmed

وَقَالَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ لَمَّا قُضِیَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَعَدَكُمۡ وَعۡدَ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَوَعَدتُّكُمۡ فَأَخۡلَفۡتُكُمۡۖ وَمَا كَانَ لِیَ عَلَیۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنٍ إِلَّاۤ أَن دَعَوۡتُكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَجَبۡتُمۡ لِیۖ فَلَا تَلُومُونِی وَلُومُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمۖ مَّاۤ أَنَا۠ بِمُصۡرِخِكُمۡ وَمَاۤ أَنتُم بِمُصۡرِخِیَّ إِنِّی كَفَرۡتُ بِمَاۤ أَشۡرَكۡتُمُونِ مِن قَبۡلُۗ إِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٢

And the devil will say after the affair is decided, “Allah certainly promised you the promise of truth and I promised you but went against (my promise to ) you, and I had no authority over you except that I invited you and you responded to me, so do not blame me but blame yourselves. I cannot help you (on your cries for help) nor can you help me I certainly rejected that (act of yours) in which you earlier associated me as a partner (with Allah). Those who are unjust, for them there is certainly a painful punishment.”

waqāla l-shayṭānu lammā quḍiya l-amru inna l-laha waʿadakum waʿda l-ḥaqi wawaʿadttukum fa-akhlaftukum wamā kāna liya ʿalaykum min sul'ṭānin illā an daʿawtukum fa-is'tajabtum lī falā talūmūnī walūmū anfusakum mā anā bimuṣ'rikhikum wamā antum bimuṣ'rikhiyya innī kafartu bimā ashraktumūni min qablu inna l-ẓālimīna lahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَأُدۡخِلَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهِمۡۖ تَحِیَّتُهُمۡ فِیهَا سَلَـٰمٌ ۝٢٣

And those who believed and did righteous works will be made to enter the gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will stay therein by the permission of their Fosterer. Their greeting therein will be ‘Peace’.

wa-ud'khila alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā bi-idh'ni rabbihim taḥiyyatuhum fīhā salāmu

أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَیۡفَ ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلࣰا كَلِمَةࣰ طَیِّبَةࣰ كَشَجَرَةࣲ طَیِّبَةٍ أَصۡلُهَا ثَابِتࣱ وَفَرۡعُهَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ۝٢٤

Did you not consider how Allah sets forth a similitude? A good statement is like a good tree, the root of which is firm and the branches of which are in the sky.

alam tara kayfa ḍaraba l-lahu mathalan kalimatan ṭayyibatan kashajaratin ṭayyibatin aṣluhā thābitun wafarʿuhā fī l-samā

تُؤۡتِیۤ أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِینِۭ بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهَاۗ وَیَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡأَمۡثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٥

It gives its fruit in every season by the permission of its Fosterer, and Allah sets forth similitude’s for mankind, that they may be mindful.

tu'tī ukulahā kulla ḥīnin bi-idh'ni rabbihā wayaḍribu l-lahu l-amthāla lilnnāsi laʿallahum yatadhakkarūn

وَمَثَلُ كَلِمَةٍ خَبِیثَةࣲ كَشَجَرَةٍ خَبِیثَةٍ ٱجۡتُثَّتۡ مِن فَوۡقِ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مَا لَهَا مِن قَرَارࣲ ۝٢٦

And (another) similitude: A bad statement is like a bad tree (which can be easily) uprooted from the earth’s surface, it has no stability.

wamathalu kalimatin khabīthatin kashajaratin khabīthatin uj'tuthat min fawqi l-arḍi mā lahā min qarāri

یُثَبِّتُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقَوۡلِ ٱلثَّابِتِ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَفِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۖ وَیُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَۚ وَیَفۡعَلُ ٱللَّهُ مَا یَشَاۤءُ ۝٢٧

Through the confirmed statement Allah establishes those who believe, (both) in the life of this world and in the hereafter, and Allah leaves the unjust in error and Allah does what He wills.

yuthabbitu l-lahu alladhīna āmanū bil-qawli l-thābiti fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wafī l-ākhirati wayuḍillu l-lahu l-ẓālimīna wayafʿalu l-lahu mā yashā

5 Man's injustice in rejecting Truth

۞ أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ بَدَّلُوا۟ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ كُفۡرࣰا وَأَحَلُّوا۟ قَوۡمَهُمۡ دَارَ ٱلۡبَوَارِ ۝٢٨

Did you not see those who exhibit ingratitude in exchange for Allah’s favours and make their people alight into the home of loss,

alam tara ilā alladhīna baddalū niʿ'mata l-lahi kuf'ran wa-aḥallū qawmahum dāra l-bawār

جَهَنَّمَ یَصۡلَوۡنَهَاۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡقَرَارُ ۝٢٩

hell, they will enter it and it is an evil place (and time for) staying.

jahannama yaṣlawnahā wabi'sa l-qarār

وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ أَندَادࣰا لِّیُضِلُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦۗ قُلۡ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ فَإِنَّ مَصِیرَكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ ۝٣٠

And they set up equals with Allah that they may mislead (people) from His way. Say, “Enjoy yourselves, but you are certainly destined for hell.”

wajaʿalū lillahi andādan liyuḍillū ʿan sabīlihi qul tamattaʿū fa-inna maṣīrakum ilā l-nār

قُل لِّعِبَادِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ یُقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَیُنفِقُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِرࣰّا وَعَلَانِیَةࣰ مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَأۡتِیَ یَوۡمࣱ لَّا بَیۡعࣱ فِیهِ وَلَا خِلَـٰلٌ ۝٣١

Say to My servants who believe, that they should establish worship (salat) and spend from that which We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before the coming of a day in which there will be neither (mutual) trade nor friendship.

qul liʿibādiya alladhīna āmanū yuqīmū l-ṣalata wayunfiqū mimmā razaqnāhum sirran waʿalāniyatan min qabli an yatiya yawmun lā bayʿun fīhi walā khilālu

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَخۡرَجَ بِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِ رِزۡقࣰا لَّكُمۡۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ لِتَجۡرِیَ فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرَ ۝٣٢

Allah is He Who created the skies and the earth and sent down water from the sky, then through it He brought forth (many varieties) of fruits (as) provision for you. And He compelled the ships (to follow His laws) and thereby sail in the sea by His command for your (service), and He compelled the rivers (to follow His laws) for your (service).

al-lahu alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wa-anzala mina l-samāi māan fa-akhraja bihi mina l-thamarāti riz'qan lakum wasakhara lakumu l-ful'ka litajriya fī l-baḥri bi-amrihi wasakhara lakumu l-anhār

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ دَاۤىِٕبَیۡنِۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ۝٣٣

And He compelled the sun and the moon (to follow His laws) constantly for your (service) and compelled the night and the day (to follow His laws) for your service .

wasakhara lakumu l-shamsa wal-qamara dāibayni wasakhara lakumu al-layla wal-nahār

وَءَاتَىٰكُم مِّن كُلِّ مَا سَأَلۡتُمُوهُۚ وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحۡصُوهَاۤۗ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَظَلُومࣱ كَفَّارࣱ ۝٣٤

And He gives you everything which you ask from Him and if you count Allah’s favours you will not be able to compute them. Man is certainly unjust, ungrateful.

waātākum min kulli mā sa-altumūhu wa-in taʿuddū niʿ'mata l-lahi lā tuḥ'ṣūhā inna l-insāna laẓalūmun kaffāru

6 Abraham's prayer

وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدَ ءَامِنࣰا وَٱجۡنُبۡنِی وَبَنِیَّ أَن نَّعۡبُدَ ٱلۡأَصۡنَامَ ۝٣٥

And when Ibrahim said, “My Fosterer ! make this city secure and save me and my sons from worshipping idols.

wa-idh qāla ib'rāhīmu rabbi ij'ʿal hādhā l-balada āminan wa-uj'nub'nī wabaniyya an naʿbuda l-aṣnām

رَبِّ إِنَّهُنَّ أَضۡلَلۡنَ كَثِیرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِۖ فَمَن تَبِعَنِی فَإِنَّهُۥ مِنِّیۖ وَمَنۡ عَصَانِی فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٣٦

My Fosterer ! they have misled many of the mankind, so whoever follows me is of me and whoever disobeys me, then certainly You are Protectively Forgiving, Merciful.

rabbi innahunna aḍlalna kathīran mina l-nāsi faman tabiʿanī fa-innahu minnī waman ʿaṣānī fa-innaka ghafūrun raḥīmu

رَّبَّنَاۤ إِنِّیۤ أَسۡكَنتُ مِن ذُرِّیَّتِی بِوَادٍ غَیۡرِ ذِی زَرۡعٍ عِندَ بَیۡتِكَ ٱلۡمُحَرَّمِ رَبَّنَا لِیُقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَٱجۡعَلۡ أَفۡءِدَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ تَهۡوِیۤ إِلَیۡهِمۡ وَٱرۡزُقۡهُم مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٣٧

Our Fosterer ! I have settled (some) of my off-spring in a valley without cultivation, near Your Sacred House, our Fosterer ! that they may establish worship (salat), so make the hearts of mankind to incline towards them, and provide them with fruits that they may be grateful.

rabbanā innī askantu min dhurriyyatī biwādin ghayri dhī zarʿin ʿinda baytika l-muḥarami rabbanā liyuqīmū l-ṣalata fa-ij'ʿal afidatan mina l-nāsi tahwī ilayhim wa-ur'zuq'hum mina l-thamarāti laʿallahum yashkurūn

رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّكَ تَعۡلَمُ مَا نُخۡفِی وَمَا نُعۡلِنُۗ وَمَا یَخۡفَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مِن شَیۡءࣲ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ۝٣٨

Our Fosterer ! You certainly know that which we hide and that which we make public and nothing is hidden from Allah (whether) in the earth or in the sky.

rabbanā innaka taʿlamu mā nukh'fī wamā nuʿ'linu wamā yakhfā ʿalā l-lahi min shayin fī l-arḍi walā fī l-samā

ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِی وَهَبَ لِی عَلَى ٱلۡكِبَرِ إِسۡمَـٰعِیلَ وَإِسۡحَـٰقَۚ إِنَّ رَبِّی لَسَمِیعُ ٱلدُّعَاۤءِ ۝٣٩

Praise is due only for Allah Who has granted me in old age, Ismael and Ishaq, my Fosterer is certainly the Hearer of prayer.

al-ḥamdu lillahi alladhī wahaba lī ʿalā l-kibari is'māʿīla wa-is'ḥāqa inna rabbī lasamīʿu l-duʿā

رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡنِی مُقِیمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّتِیۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلۡ دُعَاۤءِ ۝٤٠

My Fosterer ! make me one who establishes worship (salat) and (also) from my offspring. Our Fosterer ! and accept my prayer.

rabbi ij'ʿalnī muqīma l-ṣalati wamin dhurriyyatī rabbanā wataqabbal duʿā

رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لِی وَلِوَ ٰلِدَیَّ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ یَوۡمَ یَقُومُ ٱلۡحِسَابُ ۝٤١

Our Fosterer ! protectively forgive me and my parents and the believers on the day the account (of deeds) will be established.”

rabbanā igh'fir lī waliwālidayya walil'mu'minīna yawma yaqūmu l-ḥisāb

7 End of Opposition

وَلَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَـٰفِلًا عَمَّا یَعۡمَلُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَۚ إِنَّمَا یُؤَخِّرُهُمۡ لِیَوۡمࣲ تَشۡخَصُ فِیهِ ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرُ ۝٤٢

And do not think that Allah is unaware of that which the unjust do. He only gives them time till the day on which the eyes will stare (in horror),

walā taḥsabanna l-laha ghāfilan ʿammā yaʿmalu l-ẓālimūna innamā yu-akhiruhum liyawmin tashkhaṣu fīhi l-abṣār

مُهۡطِعِینَ مُقۡنِعِی رُءُوسِهِمۡ لَا یَرۡتَدُّ إِلَیۡهِمۡ طَرۡفُهُمۡۖ وَأَفۡءِدَتُهُمۡ هَوَاۤءࣱ ۝٤٣

(they will be) running with their heads raised without blinking their eyes and their hearts (will be) vacant.

muh'ṭiʿīna muq'niʿī ruūsihim lā yartaddu ilayhim ṭarfuhum wa-afidatuhum hawāo

وَأَنذِرِ ٱلنَّاسَ یَوۡمَ یَأۡتِیهِمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ فَیَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ رَبَّنَاۤ أَخِّرۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ قَرِیبࣲ نُّجِبۡ دَعۡوَتَكَ وَنَتَّبِعِ ٱلرُّسُلَۗ أَوَ لَمۡ تَكُونُوۤا۟ أَقۡسَمۡتُم مِّن قَبۡلُ مَا لَكُم مِّن زَوَالࣲ ۝٤٤

And warn mankind of the day when the punishment will come upon them, then those who were unjust would say, “Our Fosterer ! give us time till a near term, we will respond to your invitation and we will follow the messengers.” (They will be answered), “Did you not swear before, that there will be no decline for you?

wa-andhiri l-nāsa yawma yatīhimu l-ʿadhābu fayaqūlu alladhīna ẓalamū rabbanā akhir'nā ilā ajalin qarībin nujib daʿwataka wanattabiʿi l-rusula awalam takūnū aqsamtum min qablu mā lakum min zawāli

وَسَكَنتُمۡ فِی مَسَـٰكِنِ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَتَبَیَّنَ لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ فَعَلۡنَا بِهِمۡ وَضَرَبۡنَا لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَمۡثَالَ ۝٤٥

And you dwelt in the dwellings of those who were unjust to themselves and it was made clear to you how We dealt with them and We had set forth similitude’s for you.”

wasakantum fī masākini alladhīna ẓalamū anfusahum watabayyana lakum kayfa faʿalnā bihim waḍarabnā lakumu l-amthāl

وَقَدۡ مَكَرُوا۟ مَكۡرَهُمۡ وَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ مَكۡرُهُمۡ وَإِن كَانَ مَكۡرُهُمۡ لِتَزُولَ مِنۡهُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ ۝٤٦

And they had planned their plan, and their plan is with Allah, and if their plan was implemented (it would have been sufficient) for moving away mountains thereby.

waqad makarū makrahum waʿinda l-lahi makruhum wa-in kāna makruhum litazūla min'hu l-jibāl

فَلَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِفَ وَعۡدِهِۦ رُسُلَهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِیزࣱ ذُو ٱنتِقَامࣲ ۝٤٧

So do not think that Allah will go against His promise to His messengers, Allah is certainly Mighty, Capable of retribution.

falā taḥsabanna l-laha mukh'lifa waʿdihi rusulahu inna l-laha ʿazīzun dhū intiqāmi

یَوۡمَ تُبَدَّلُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ غَیۡرَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُۖ وَبَرَزُوا۟ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡوَ ٰحِدِ ٱلۡقَهَّارِ ۝٤٨

The day on which the earth will be changed to other than the (present) earth and the skies (too), and they will appear before Allah, the One, the Omnipotent.

yawma tubaddalu l-arḍu ghayra l-arḍi wal-samāwātu wabarazū lillahi l-wāḥidi l-qahār

وَتَرَى ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ مُّقَرَّنِینَ فِی ٱلۡأَصۡفَادِ ۝٤٩

And on that day you will see the criminals linked together in chains,

watarā l-muj'rimīna yawma-idhin muqarranīna fī l-aṣfād

سَرَابِیلُهُم مِّن قَطِرَانࣲ وَتَغۡشَىٰ وُجُوهَهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ ۝٥٠

their shirts made of pitch and the fire covering their faces,

sarābīluhum min qaṭirānin wataghshā wujūhahumu l-nār

لِیَجۡزِیَ ٱللَّهُ كُلَّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّا كَسَبَتۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِیعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ۝٥١

that Allah may reward every soul (according to) that which it earned. Allah is certainly Quick (at settling) the account.

liyajziya l-lahu kulla nafsin mā kasabat inna l-laha sarīʿu l-ḥisāb

هَـٰذَا بَلَـٰغࣱ لِّلنَّاسِ وَلِیُنذَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَلِیَعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱ وَلِیَذَّكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝٥٢

This is a message for mankind that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is certainly one God, and that men of understanding may be mindful.

hādhā balāghun lilnnāsi waliyundharū bihi waliyaʿlamū annamā huwa ilāhun wāḥidun waliyadhakkara ulū l-albāb
