1 Orphans' Guardians

۞ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفۡسࣲ وَ ٰحِدَةࣲ وَخَلَقَ مِنۡهَا زَوۡجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنۡهُمَا رِجَالࣰا كَثِیرࣰا وَنِسَاۤءࣰۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِی تَسَاۤءَلُونَ بِهِۦ وَٱلۡأَرۡحَامَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ رَقِیبࣰا ۝١

O men, fear your Lord, who hath created you out of one man, and out of him created his wife, and from them two hath multiplied many men, and women: And fear God by whom ye beseech one another; and respect women who have born you, for God is watching over you

yāayyuhā l-nāsu ittaqū rabbakumu alladhī khalaqakum min nafsin wāḥidatin wakhalaqa min'hā zawjahā wabatha min'humā rijālan kathīran wanisāan wa-ittaqū l-laha alladhī tasāalūna bihi wal-arḥāma inna l-laha kāna ʿalaykum raqība

وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلَهُمۡۖ وَلَا تَتَبَدَّلُوا۟ ٱلۡخَبِیثَ بِٱلطَّیِّبِۖ وَلَا تَأۡكُلُوۤا۟ أَمۡوَ ٰلَهُمۡ إِلَىٰۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِكُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ حُوبࣰا كَبِیرࣰا ۝٢

And give the orphans when they come to age their substance; and render them not in exchange bad for good: And devour not their substance, by adding it to your own substance; for this is a great sin

waātū l-yatāmā amwālahum walā tatabaddalū l-khabītha bil-ṭayibi walā takulū amwālahum ilā amwālikum innahu kāna ḥūban kabīra

وَإِنۡ خِفۡتُمۡ أَلَّا تُقۡسِطُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ فَٱنكِحُوا۟ مَا طَابَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ مَثۡنَىٰ وَثُلَـٰثَ وَرُبَـٰعَۖ فَإِنۡ خِفۡتُمۡ أَلَّا تَعۡدِلُوا۟ فَوَ ٰحِدَةً أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُمۡۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ أَدۡنَىٰۤ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا۟ ۝٣

And if ye fear that ye shall not act with equity towards orphans of the female sex, take in marriage of such other women as please you, two, or three, or four, and not more. But if ye fear that ye cannot act equitably towards so many, marry one only, or the slaves which ye shall have acquired. This will be easier, that ye swerve not from righteousness

wa-in khif'tum allā tuq'siṭū fī l-yatāmā fa-inkiḥū mā ṭāba lakum mina l-nisāi mathnā wathulātha warubāʿa fa-in khif'tum allā taʿdilū fawāḥidatan aw mā malakat aymānukum dhālika adnā allā taʿūl

وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلنِّسَاۤءَ صَدُقَـٰتِهِنَّ نِحۡلَةࣰۚ فَإِن طِبۡنَ لَكُمۡ عَن شَیۡءࣲ مِّنۡهُ نَفۡسࣰا فَكُلُوهُ هَنِیۤءࣰا مَّرِیۤءࣰا ۝٤

And give women their dowry freely; but if they voluntarily remit unto you any part of it, enjoy it with satisfaction and advantage

waātū l-nisāa ṣaduqātihinna niḥ'latan fa-in ṭib'na lakum ʿan shayin min'hu nafsan fakulūhu hanīan marīa

وَلَا تُؤۡتُوا۟ ٱلسُّفَهَاۤءَ أَمۡوَ ٰلَكُمُ ٱلَّتِی جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ قِیَـٰمࣰا وَٱرۡزُقُوهُمۡ فِیهَا وَٱكۡسُوهُمۡ وَقُولُوا۟ لَهُمۡ قَوۡلࣰا مَّعۡرُوفࣰا ۝٥

And give not unto those who are weak of understanding, the substance which God hath appointed you to preserve for them; but maintain them thereout, and clothe them, and speak kindly unto them

walā tu'tū l-sufahāa amwālakumu allatī jaʿala l-lahu lakum qiyāman wa-ur'zuqūhum fīhā wa-ik'sūhum waqūlū lahum qawlan maʿrūfa

وَٱبۡتَلُوا۟ ٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا بَلَغُوا۟ ٱلنِّكَاحَ فَإِنۡ ءَانَسۡتُم مِّنۡهُمۡ رُشۡدࣰا فَٱدۡفَعُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلَهُمۡۖ وَلَا تَأۡكُلُوهَاۤ إِسۡرَافࣰا وَبِدَارًا أَن یَكۡبَرُوا۟ۚ وَمَن كَانَ غَنِیࣰّا فَلۡیَسۡتَعۡفِفۡۖ وَمَن كَانَ فَقِیرࣰا فَلۡیَأۡكُلۡ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِۚ فَإِذَا دَفَعۡتُمۡ إِلَیۡهِمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلَهُمۡ فَأَشۡهِدُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ حَسِیبࣰا ۝٦

And examine the orphans until they attain the age of marriage: But if ye perceive they are able to manage their affairs well, deliver their substance unto them; and waste it not extravagantly, or hastily, because they grow up. Let him who is rich abstain entirely from the orphans estates; and let him who is poor take thereof according to what shall be reasonable. And when ye deliver their substance unto them, call witnesses thereof in their presence: God taketh sufficient account of your actions

wa-ib'talū l-yatāmā ḥattā idhā balaghū l-nikāḥa fa-in ānastum min'hum rush'dan fa-id'faʿū ilayhim amwālahum walā takulūhā is'rāfan wabidāran an yakbarū waman kāna ghaniyyan falyastaʿfif waman kāna faqīran falyakul bil-maʿrūfi fa-idhā dafaʿtum ilayhim amwālahum fa-ashhidū ʿalayhim wakafā bil-lahi ḥasība

لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِیبࣱ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَانِ وَٱلۡأَقۡرَبُونَ وَلِلنِّسَاۤءِ نَصِیبࣱ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَانِ وَٱلۡأَقۡرَبُونَ مِمَّا قَلَّ مِنۡهُ أَوۡ كَثُرَۚ نَصِیبࣰا مَّفۡرُوضࣰا ۝٧

Men ought to have a part of what their parents and kindred leave behind them when they die: And women also ought to have a part of what their parents and kindred leave, whether it be little, or whether it be much; a determinate part is due to them

lilrrijāli naṣībun mimmā taraka l-wālidāni wal-aqrabūna walilnnisāi naṣībun mimmā taraka l-wālidāni wal-aqrabūna mimmā qalla min'hu aw kathura naṣīban mafrūḍa

وَإِذَا حَضَرَ ٱلۡقِسۡمَةَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینُ فَٱرۡزُقُوهُم مِّنۡهُ وَقُولُوا۟ لَهُمۡ قَوۡلࣰا مَّعۡرُوفࣰا ۝٨

And when they who are of kin are present at the dividing of what is left, and also the orphans, and the poor; distribute unto them some part thereof; and if the estate be too small, at least speak comfortably unto them

wa-idhā ḥaḍara l-qis'mata ulū l-qur'bā wal-yatāmā wal-masākīnu fa-ur'zuqūhum min'hu waqūlū lahum qawlan maʿrūfa

وَلۡیَخۡشَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَوۡ تَرَكُوا۟ مِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ ذُرِّیَّةࣰ ضِعَـٰفًا خَافُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِمۡ فَلۡیَتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلۡیَقُولُوا۟ قَوۡلࣰا سَدِیدًا ۝٩

And let those fear to abuse orphans, who if they leave behind them a weak off-spring, are sollicitous for them: let them therefore fear God, and speak that which is convenient

walyakhsha alladhīna law tarakū min khalfihim dhurriyyatan ḍiʿāfan khāfū ʿalayhim falyattaqū l-laha walyaqūlū qawlan sadīda

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَأۡكُلُونَ أَمۡوَ ٰلَ ٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ ظُلۡمًا إِنَّمَا یَأۡكُلُونَ فِی بُطُونِهِمۡ نَارࣰاۖ وَسَیَصۡلَوۡنَ سَعِیرࣰا ۝١٠

Surely they who devour the possessions of orphans unjustly, shall swallow down nothing but fire into their bellies, and shall broil in raging flames

inna alladhīna yakulūna amwāla l-yatāmā ẓul'man innamā yakulūna fī buṭūnihim nāran wasayaṣlawna saʿīra

2 Law of Inheritance

یُوصِیكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِیۤ أَوۡلَـٰدِكُمۡۖ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثۡلُ حَظِّ ٱلۡأُنثَیَیۡنِۚ فَإِن كُنَّ نِسَاۤءࣰ فَوۡقَ ٱثۡنَتَیۡنِ فَلَهُنَّ ثُلُثَا مَا تَرَكَۖ وَإِن كَانَتۡ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ فَلَهَا ٱلنِّصۡفُۚ وَلِأَبَوَیۡهِ لِكُلِّ وَ ٰحِدࣲ مِّنۡهُمَا ٱلسُّدُسُ مِمَّا تَرَكَ إِن كَانَ لَهُۥ وَلَدࣱۚ فَإِن لَّمۡ یَكُن لَّهُۥ وَلَدࣱ وَوَرِثَهُۥۤ أَبَوَاهُ فَلِأُمِّهِ ٱلثُّلُثُۚ فَإِن كَانَ لَهُۥۤ إِخۡوَةࣱ فَلِأُمِّهِ ٱلسُّدُسُۚ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ وَصِیَّةࣲ یُوصِی بِهَاۤ أَوۡ دَیۡنٍۗ ءَابَاۤؤُكُمۡ وَأَبۡنَاۤؤُكُمۡ لَا تَدۡرُونَ أَیُّهُمۡ أَقۡرَبُ لَكُمۡ نَفۡعࣰاۚ فَرِیضَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝١١

God hath thus commanded you concerning your children. A male shall have as much as the share of two females: But if they be females only, and above two in number, they shall have two third parts of what the deceased shall leave; and if there be but one, she shall have the half. And the parents of the deceased shall have each of them a sixth part of what he shall leave, if he have a child: But if he have no child, and his parents be his heirs, then his mother shall have the third part. And if he have brethren, his mother shall have a sixth part, after the legacies which he shall bequeath, and his debts be paid. Ye know not whether your parents or your children be of greater use unto you. This is an ordinance from God, and God is knowing and wise

yūṣīkumu l-lahu fī awlādikum lildhakari mith'lu ḥaẓẓi l-unthayayni fa-in kunna nisāan fawqa ith'natayni falahunna thuluthā mā taraka wa-in kānat wāḥidatan falahā l-niṣ'fu wali-abawayhi likulli wāḥidin min'humā l-sudusu mimmā taraka in kāna lahu waladun fa-in lam yakun lahu waladun wawarithahu abawāhu fali-ummihi l-thuluthu fa-in kāna lahu ikh'watun fali-ummihi l-sudusu min baʿdi waṣiyyatin yūṣī bihā aw daynin ābāukum wa-abnāukum lā tadrūna ayyuhum aqrabu lakum nafʿan farīḍatan mina l-lahi inna l-laha kāna ʿalīman ḥakīma

۞ وَلَكُمۡ نِصۡفُ مَا تَرَكَ أَزۡوَ ٰجُكُمۡ إِن لَّمۡ یَكُن لَّهُنَّ وَلَدࣱۚ فَإِن كَانَ لَهُنَّ وَلَدࣱ فَلَكُمُ ٱلرُّبُعُ مِمَّا تَرَكۡنَۚ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ وَصِیَّةࣲ یُوصِینَ بِهَاۤ أَوۡ دَیۡنࣲۚ وَلَهُنَّ ٱلرُّبُعُ مِمَّا تَرَكۡتُمۡ إِن لَّمۡ یَكُن لَّكُمۡ وَلَدࣱۚ فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمۡ وَلَدࣱ فَلَهُنَّ ٱلثُّمُنُ مِمَّا تَرَكۡتُمۚ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ وَصِیَّةࣲ تُوصُونَ بِهَاۤ أَوۡ دَیۡنࣲۗ وَإِن كَانَ رَجُلࣱ یُورَثُ كَلَـٰلَةً أَوِ ٱمۡرَأَةࣱ وَلَهُۥۤ أَخٌ أَوۡ أُخۡتࣱ فَلِكُلِّ وَ ٰحِدࣲ مِّنۡهُمَا ٱلسُّدُسُۚ فَإِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَكۡثَرَ مِن ذَ ٰلِكَ فَهُمۡ شُرَكَاۤءُ فِی ٱلثُّلُثِۚ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ وَصِیَّةࣲ یُوصَىٰ بِهَاۤ أَوۡ دَیۡنٍ غَیۡرَ مُضَاۤرࣲّۚ وَصِیَّةࣰ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَلِیمࣱ ۝١٢

Moreover ye may claim half of what your wives shall leave, if they have no issue; but if they have issue, then ye shall have the fourth part of what they shall leave, after the legacies which they shall bequeath, and the debts be paid. They also shall have the fourth part of what ye shall leave, in case ye have no issue; but if ye have issue, then they shall have the eighth part of what ye shall leave, after the legacies which ye shall bequeath, and your debts be paid. And if a man or woman's substance be inherited by a distant relation, and he or she have a brother or sister; each of them two shall have a sixth part of the estate. But if there be more than this number, they shall be equal sharers in a third part, after payment of the legacies which shall be bequeathed, and the debts, without prejudice to the heirs. This is an ordinance from God: And God is knowing and gracious

walakum niṣ'fu mā taraka azwājukum in lam yakun lahunna waladun fa-in kāna lahunna waladun falakumu l-rubuʿu mimmā tarakna min baʿdi waṣiyyatin yūṣīna bihā aw daynin walahunna l-rubuʿu mimmā taraktum in lam yakun lakum waladun fa-in kāna lakum waladun falahunna l-thumunu mimmā taraktum min baʿdi waṣiyyatin tūṣūna bihā aw daynin wa-in kāna rajulun yūrathu kalālatan awi im'ra-atun walahu akhun aw ukh'tun falikulli wāḥidin min'humā l-sudusu fa-in kānū akthara min dhālika fahum shurakāu fī l-thuluthi min baʿdi waṣiyyatin yūṣā bihā aw daynin ghayra muḍārrin waṣiyyatan mina l-lahi wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥalīmu

تِلۡكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَن یُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ یُدۡخِلۡهُ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝١٣

These are the statutes of God. And whoso obeyeth God and his apostle, God shall lead him into gardens wherein rivers flow, they shall continue therein for ever; and this shall be great happiness

til'ka ḥudūdu l-lahi waman yuṭiʿi l-laha warasūlahu yud'khil'hu jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wadhālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

وَمَن یَعۡصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَیَتَعَدَّ حُدُودَهُۥ یُدۡخِلۡهُ نَارًا خَـٰلِدࣰا فِیهَا وَلَهُۥ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝١٤

But whoso disobeyeth God, and his apostle, and transgresseth his statutes, God shall cast him into hell fire; he shall remain therein for ever, and he shall suffer a shameful punishment

waman yaʿṣi l-laha warasūlahu wayataʿadda ḥudūdahu yud'khil'hu nāran khālidan fīhā walahu ʿadhābun muhīnu

3 Treatment of Women

وَٱلَّـٰتِی یَأۡتِینَ ٱلۡفَـٰحِشَةَ مِن نِّسَاۤىِٕكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَشۡهِدُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِنَّ أَرۡبَعَةࣰ مِّنكُمۡۖ فَإِن شَهِدُوا۟ فَأَمۡسِكُوهُنَّ فِی ٱلۡبُیُوتِ حَتَّىٰ یَتَوَفَّىٰهُنَّ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ أَوۡ یَجۡعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُنَّ سَبِیلࣰا ۝١٥

If any of your women be guilty of whoredom, produce four witnesses from among you against them, and if they bear witness against them, imprison them in separate apartments until death release them, or God affordeth them a way to escape

wa-allātī yatīna l-fāḥishata min nisāikum fa-is'tashhidū ʿalayhinna arbaʿatan minkum fa-in shahidū fa-amsikūhunna fī l-buyūti ḥattā yatawaffāhunna l-mawtu aw yajʿala l-lahu lahunna sabīla

وَٱلَّذَانِ یَأۡتِیَـٰنِهَا مِنكُمۡ فَءَاذُوهُمَاۖ فَإِن تَابَا وَأَصۡلَحَا فَأَعۡرِضُوا۟ عَنۡهُمَاۤۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ تَوَّابࣰا رَّحِیمًا ۝١٦

And if two of you commit the like wickedness, punish them both: But if they repent and amend, let them both alone; for God is easy to be reconciled and merciful

wa-alladhāni yatiyānihā minkum faādhūhumā fa-in tābā wa-aṣlaḥā fa-aʿriḍū ʿanhumā inna l-laha kāna tawwāban raḥīma

إِنَّمَا ٱلتَّوۡبَةُ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ لِلَّذِینَ یَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلسُّوۤءَ بِجَهَـٰلَةࣲ ثُمَّ یَتُوبُونَ مِن قَرِیبࣲ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِمۡۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝١٧

Verily repentance will be accepted with God, from those who do evil ignorantly, and then repent speedily; unto them will God be turned: For God is knowing and wise

innamā l-tawbatu ʿalā l-lahi lilladhīna yaʿmalūna l-sūa bijahālatin thumma yatūbūna min qarībin fa-ulāika yatūbu l-lahu ʿalayhim wakāna l-lahu ʿalīman ḥakīma

وَلَیۡسَتِ ٱلتَّوۡبَةُ لِلَّذِینَ یَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَهُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ قَالَ إِنِّی تُبۡتُ ٱلۡءَـٰنَ وَلَا ٱلَّذِینَ یَمُوتُونَ وَهُمۡ كُفَّارٌۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَعۡتَدۡنَا لَهُمۡ عَذَابًا أَلِیمࣰا ۝١٨

But no repentance shall be accepted from those who do evil until the time when death presenteth it self unto one of them, and he saith, verily I repent now; nor unto those who die unbelievers: For them have we prepared a grievous punishment

walaysati l-tawbatu lilladhīna yaʿmalūna l-sayiāti ḥattā idhā ḥaḍara aḥadahumu l-mawtu qāla innī tub'tu l-āna walā alladhīna yamūtūna wahum kuffārun ulāika aʿtadnā lahum ʿadhāban alīma

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا یَحِلُّ لَكُمۡ أَن تَرِثُوا۟ ٱلنِّسَاۤءَ كَرۡهࣰاۖ وَلَا تَعۡضُلُوهُنَّ لِتَذۡهَبُوا۟ بِبَعۡضِ مَاۤ ءَاتَیۡتُمُوهُنَّ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَأۡتِینَ بِفَـٰحِشَةࣲ مُّبَیِّنَةࣲۚ وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِۚ فَإِن كَرِهۡتُمُوهُنَّ فَعَسَىٰۤ أَن تَكۡرَهُوا۟ شَیۡءࣰا وَیَجۡعَلَ ٱللَّهُ فِیهِ خَیۡرࣰا كَثِیرࣰا ۝١٩

O true believers, it is not lawful for you to be heirs of women against their will, nor to hinder them from marrying others, that ye may take away part of what ye have given them in dowry; unless they have been guilty of a manifest crime: But converse kindly with them. And if ye hate them, it may happen that ye may hate a thing wherein God hath placed much good

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā yaḥillu lakum an tarithū l-nisāa karhan walā taʿḍulūhunna litadhhabū bibaʿḍi mā ātaytumūhunna illā an yatīna bifāḥishatin mubayyinatin waʿāshirūhunna bil-maʿrūfi fa-in karih'tumūhunna faʿasā an takrahū shayan wayajʿala l-lahu fīhi khayran kathīra

وَإِنۡ أَرَدتُّمُ ٱسۡتِبۡدَالَ زَوۡجࣲ مَّكَانَ زَوۡجࣲ وَءَاتَیۡتُمۡ إِحۡدَىٰهُنَّ قِنطَارࣰا فَلَا تَأۡخُذُوا۟ مِنۡهُ شَیۡءًاۚ أَتَأۡخُذُونَهُۥ بُهۡتَـٰنࣰا وَإِثۡمࣰا مُّبِینࣰا ۝٢٠

If ye be desirous to exchange a wife for another wife, and ye have already given one of them a talent; take not away any thing therefrom; Will ye take it by slandering her, and doing her manifest unjustice

wa-in aradttumu is'tib'dāla zawjin makāna zawjin waātaytum iḥ'dāhunna qinṭāran falā takhudhū min'hu shayan atakhudhūnahu buh'tānan wa-ith'man mubīna

وَكَیۡفَ تَأۡخُذُونَهُۥ وَقَدۡ أَفۡضَىٰ بَعۡضُكُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ وَأَخَذۡنَ مِنكُم مِّیثَـٰقًا غَلِیظࣰا ۝٢١

And how can ye take it, since the one of you hath gone in unto the other, and they have received from you a firm covenant

wakayfa takhudhūnahu waqad afḍā baʿḍukum ilā baʿḍin wa-akhadhna minkum mīthāqan ghalīẓa

وَلَا تَنكِحُوا۟ مَا نَكَحَ ءَابَاۤؤُكُم مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ إِلَّا مَا قَدۡ سَلَفَۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَـٰحِشَةࣰ وَمَقۡتࣰا وَسَاۤءَ سَبِیلًا ۝٢٢

Marry not women, whom your fathers have had to wife; -- except what is already past: -- For this is uncleanness, and an abomination, and an evil way

walā tankiḥū mā nakaḥa ābāukum mina l-nisāi illā mā qad salafa innahu kāna fāḥishatan wamaqtan wasāa sabīla

4 Women who may be married

حُرِّمَتۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أُمَّهَـٰتُكُمۡ وَبَنَاتُكُمۡ وَأَخَوَ ٰتُكُمۡ وَعَمَّـٰتُكُمۡ وَخَـٰلَـٰتُكُمۡ وَبَنَاتُ ٱلۡأَخِ وَبَنَاتُ ٱلۡأُخۡتِ وَأُمَّهَـٰتُكُمُ ٱلَّـٰتِیۤ أَرۡضَعۡنَكُمۡ وَأَخَوَ ٰتُكُم مِّنَ ٱلرَّضَـٰعَةِ وَأُمَّهَـٰتُ نِسَاۤىِٕكُمۡ وَرَبَـٰۤىِٕبُكُمُ ٱلَّـٰتِی فِی حُجُورِكُم مِّن نِّسَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلَّـٰتِی دَخَلۡتُم بِهِنَّ فَإِن لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ دَخَلۡتُم بِهِنَّ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَحَلَـٰۤىِٕلُ أَبۡنَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ مِنۡ أَصۡلَـٰبِكُمۡ وَأَن تَجۡمَعُوا۟ بَیۡنَ ٱلۡأُخۡتَیۡنِ إِلَّا مَا قَدۡ سَلَفَۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝٢٣

Ye are forbidden to marry your mothers, and your daughters, and your sisters, and your aunts both on the fathers and on the mothers side, and your brothers daughters, and your sisters daughters, and your mothers who have given you suck, and your foster-sisters, and your wives mothers, and your daughters-in-law which are under your tuition, born of your wives unto whom ye have gone in, -- but if ye have not gone in unto them, it shall be no sin in you to marry them, -- and the wives of your sons who proceed out of your loins; and ye are also forbidden to take to wife two sisters; except what is already past: For God is gracious and merciful

ḥurrimat ʿalaykum ummahātukum wabanātukum wa-akhawātukum waʿammātukum wakhālātukum wabanātu l-akhi wabanātu l-ukh'ti wa-ummahātukumu allātī arḍaʿnakum wa-akhawātukum mina l-raḍāʿati wa-ummahātu nisāikum warabāibukumu allātī fī ḥujūrikum min nisāikumu allātī dakhaltum bihinna fa-in lam takūnū dakhaltum bihinna falā junāḥa ʿalaykum waḥalāilu abnāikumu alladhīna min aṣlābikum wa-an tajmaʿū bayna l-ukh'tayni illā mā qad salafa inna l-laha kāna ghafūran raḥīma

۞ وَٱلۡمُحۡصَنَـٰتُ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ إِلَّا مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُمۡۖ كِتَـٰبَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡكُمۡۚ وَأُحِلَّ لَكُم مَّا وَرَاۤءَ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ أَن تَبۡتَغُوا۟ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِكُم مُّحۡصِنِینَ غَیۡرَ مُسَـٰفِحِینَۚ فَمَا ٱسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُم بِهِۦ مِنۡهُنَّ فَءَاتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ فَرِیضَةࣰۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فِیمَا تَرَ ٰضَیۡتُم بِهِۦ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱلۡفَرِیضَةِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝٢٤

Ye are also forbidden to take to wife free women who are married, except those women whom your right hands shall possess as slaves. This is ordained you from God. Whatever is beside this, is allowed you; that ye may with your substance provide wives for your selves, acting that which is right, and avoiding whoredom. And for the advantage which ye receive from them, give them their reward, according to what is ordained: But it shall be no crime in you to make any other agreement among your selves, after the ordinance shall be complied with; for God is knowing and wise

wal-muḥ'ṣanātu mina l-nisāi illā mā malakat aymānukum kitāba l-lahi ʿalaykum wa-uḥilla lakum mā warāa dhālikum an tabtaghū bi-amwālikum muḥ'ṣinīna ghayra musāfiḥīna famā is'tamtaʿtum bihi min'hunna faātūhunna ujūrahunna farīḍatan walā junāḥa ʿalaykum fīmā tarāḍaytum bihi min baʿdi l-farīḍati inna l-laha kāna ʿalīman ḥakīma

وَمَن لَّمۡ یَسۡتَطِعۡ مِنكُمۡ طَوۡلًا أَن یَنكِحَ ٱلۡمُحۡصَنَـٰتِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِ فَمِن مَّا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُم مِّن فَتَیَـٰتِكُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِۚ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِإِیمَـٰنِكُمۚ بَعۡضُكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡضࣲۚ فَٱنكِحُوهُنَّ بِإِذۡنِ أَهۡلِهِنَّ وَءَاتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ مُحۡصَنَـٰتٍ غَیۡرَ مُسَـٰفِحَـٰتࣲ وَلَا مُتَّخِذَ ٰتِ أَخۡدَانࣲۚ فَإِذَاۤ أُحۡصِنَّ فَإِنۡ أَتَیۡنَ بِفَـٰحِشَةࣲ فَعَلَیۡهِنَّ نِصۡفُ مَا عَلَى ٱلۡمُحۡصَنَـٰتِ مِنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ لِمَنۡ خَشِیَ ٱلۡعَنَتَ مِنكُمۡۚ وَأَن تَصۡبِرُوا۟ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٢٥

Whoso among you hath not means sufficient that he may marry free women, who are believers, let him marry with such of your maid-servants whom your right hands possess, as are true believers; for God well knoweth your faith. Ye are the one from the other: Therefore marry them with the consent of their masters; and give them their dower according to justice; such as are modest, not guilty of whoredom, nor entertaining lovers. And when they are married, if they be guilty of adultery, they shall suffer half the punishment which is appointed for the free women. This is allowed unto him among you, who feareth to sin by marrying free women; but if ye abstain from marrying slaves, it will be better for you; God is gracious and merciful

waman lam yastaṭiʿ minkum ṭawlan an yankiḥa l-muḥ'ṣanāti l-mu'mināti famin mā malakat aymānukum min fatayātikumu l-mu'mināti wal-lahu aʿlamu biīmānikum baʿḍukum min baʿḍin fa-inkiḥūhunna bi-idh'ni ahlihinna waātūhunna ujūrahunna bil-maʿrūfi muḥ'ṣanātin ghayra musāfiḥātin walā muttakhidhāti akhdānin fa-idhā uḥ'ṣinna fa-in atayna bifāḥishatin faʿalayhinna niṣ'fu mā ʿalā l-muḥ'ṣanāti mina l-ʿadhābi dhālika liman khashiya l-ʿanata minkum wa-an taṣbirū khayrun lakum wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmu

5 Women's Rights over their Earnings

یُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ لِیُبَیِّنَ لَكُمۡ وَیَهۡدِیَكُمۡ سُنَنَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ وَیَتُوبَ عَلَیۡكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٢٦

God is willing to declare these things unto you and to direct you according to the ordinances of those who have gone before you, and to be merciful unto you. God is knowing and wise

yurīdu l-lahu liyubayyina lakum wayahdiyakum sunana alladhīna min qablikum wayatūba ʿalaykum wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

وَٱللَّهُ یُرِیدُ أَن یَتُوبَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَیُرِیدُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلشَّهَوَ ٰتِ أَن تَمِیلُوا۟ مَیۡلًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٢٧

God desireth to be gracious unto you; but they who follow their lusts, desire that ye should turn aside from the truth with great deviation

wal-lahu yurīdu an yatūba ʿalaykum wayurīdu alladhīna yattabiʿūna l-shahawāti an tamīlū maylan ʿaẓīma

یُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن یُخَفِّفَ عَنكُمۡۚ وَخُلِقَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ ضَعِیفࣰا ۝٢٨

God is minded to make His religion light unto you: For man was created weak

yurīdu l-lahu an yukhaffifa ʿankum wakhuliqa l-insānu ḍaʿīfa

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأۡكُلُوۤا۟ أَمۡوَ ٰلَكُم بَیۡنَكُم بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَكُونَ تِجَـٰرَةً عَن تَرَاضࣲ مِّنكُمۡۚ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمۡ رَحِیمࣰا ۝٢٩

O true believers, consume not your wealth among your selves in vanity; unless there be merchandizing among you by mutual consent: neither slay your selves; for God is merciful towards you

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā takulū amwālakum baynakum bil-bāṭili illā an takūna tijāratan ʿan tarāḍin minkum walā taqtulū anfusakum inna l-laha kāna bikum raḥīma

وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡ ذَ ٰلِكَ عُدۡوَ ٰنࣰا وَظُلۡمࣰا فَسَوۡفَ نُصۡلِیهِ نَارࣰاۚ وَكَانَ ذَ ٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ یَسِیرًا ۝٣٠

And whoever doth this maliciously and wickedly, he will surely cast him to be broiled in hell fire; and this is easy with God

waman yafʿal dhālika ʿud'wānan waẓul'man fasawfa nuṣ'līhi nāran wakāna dhālika ʿalā l-lahi yasīra

إِن تَجۡتَنِبُوا۟ كَبَاۤىِٕرَ مَا تُنۡهَوۡنَ عَنۡهُ نُكَفِّرۡ عَنكُمۡ سَیِّءَاتِكُمۡ وَنُدۡخِلۡكُم مُّدۡخَلࣰا كَرِیمࣰا ۝٣١

If ye turn aside from the grievous sins, of those which ye are forbidden to commit, we will cleanse you from your smaller faults; and will introduce you into paradise with an honourable entry

in tajtanibū kabāira mā tun'hawna ʿanhu nukaffir ʿankum sayyiātikum wanud'khil'kum mud'khalan karīma

وَلَا تَتَمَنَّوۡا۟ مَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦ بَعۡضَكُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲۚ لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِیبࣱ مِّمَّا ٱكۡتَسَبُوا۟ۖ وَلِلنِّسَاۤءِ نَصِیبࣱ مِّمَّا ٱكۡتَسَبۡنَۚ وَسۡءَلُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمࣰا ۝٣٢

Covet not that which God hath bestowed on some of you preferably to others. Unto the men shall be given a portion, of what they shall have gained, and unto the women shall be given a portion, of what they shall have gained: Therefore ask God of his bounty; for God is omniscient

walā tatamannaw mā faḍḍala l-lahu bihi baʿḍakum ʿalā baʿḍin lilrrijāli naṣībun mimmā ik'tasabū walilnnisāi naṣībun mimmā ik'tasabna wasalū l-laha min faḍlihi inna l-laha kāna bikulli shayin ʿalīma

وَلِكُلࣲّ جَعَلۡنَا مَوَ ٰلِیَ مِمَّا تَرَكَ ٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَانِ وَٱلۡأَقۡرَبُونَۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ عَقَدَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُمۡ فَءَاتُوهُمۡ نَصِیبَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ شَهِیدًا ۝٣٣

We have appointed unto every one kindred, to inherit part of what their parents and relations shall leave at their deaths. And unto those with whom your right hands have made an alliance, give their part of the inheritance; for God is witness of all things

walikullin jaʿalnā mawāliya mimmā taraka l-wālidāni wal-aqrabūna wa-alladhīna ʿaqadat aymānukum faātūhum naṣībahum inna l-laha kāna ʿalā kulli shayin shahīda

6 Disagreement of Husband and Wife

ٱلرِّجَالُ قَوَّ ٰمُونَ عَلَى ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بَعۡضَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ وَبِمَاۤ أَنفَقُوا۟ مِنۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡۚ فَٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ قَـٰنِتَـٰتٌ حَـٰفِظَـٰتࣱ لِّلۡغَیۡبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ ٱللَّهُۚ وَٱلَّـٰتِی تَخَافُونَ نُشُوزَهُنَّ فَعِظُوهُنَّ وَٱهۡجُرُوهُنَّ فِی ٱلۡمَضَاجِعِ وَٱضۡرِبُوهُنَّۖ فَإِنۡ أَطَعۡنَكُمۡ فَلَا تَبۡغُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِنَّ سَبِیلًاۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِیࣰّا كَبِیرࣰا ۝٣٤

Men shall have the pre-eminence above women, because of those advantages wherein God hath caused the one of them to excel the other, and for that which they expend of their substance in maintaining their wives. The honest women are obedient, careful in the absence of their husbands, for that God preserveth them, by committing them to the care and protection of the men. But those, whose perverseness ye shall be apprehensive of, rebuke; and remove them into separate apartments, and chastise them. But if they shall be obedient unto you, seek not an occasion of quarrel against them; for God is high and great

al-rijālu qawwāmūna ʿalā l-nisāi bimā faḍḍala l-lahu baʿḍahum ʿalā baʿḍin wabimā anfaqū min amwālihim fal-ṣāliḥātu qānitātun ḥāfiẓātun lil'ghaybi bimā ḥafiẓa l-lahu wa-allātī takhāfūna nushūzahunna faʿiẓūhunna wa-uh'jurūhunna fī l-maḍājiʿi wa-iḍ'ribūhunna fa-in aṭaʿnakum falā tabghū ʿalayhinna sabīlan inna l-laha kāna ʿaliyyan kabīra

وَإِنۡ خِفۡتُمۡ شِقَاقَ بَیۡنِهِمَا فَٱبۡعَثُوا۟ حَكَمࣰا مِّنۡ أَهۡلِهِۦ وَحَكَمࣰا مِّنۡ أَهۡلِهَاۤ إِن یُرِیدَاۤ إِصۡلَـٰحࣰا یُوَفِّقِ ٱللَّهُ بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِیمًا خَبِیرࣰا ۝٣٥

And if ye fear a breach between the husband and wife, send a judge out of his family, and a judge out of her family: If they shall desire a reconciliation, God will cause them to agree; for God is knowing and wise

wa-in khif'tum shiqāqa baynihimā fa-ib'ʿathū ḥakaman min ahlihi waḥakaman min ahlihā in yurīdā iṣ'lāḥan yuwaffiqi l-lahu baynahumā inna l-laha kāna ʿalīman khabīra

۞ وَٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُشۡرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَبِٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَیۡنِ إِحۡسَـٰنࣰا وَبِذِی ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ وَٱلۡجَارِ ذِی ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَٱلۡجَارِ ٱلۡجُنُبِ وَٱلصَّاحِبِ بِٱلۡجَنۢبِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَمَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ مُخۡتَالࣰا فَخُورًا ۝٣٦

Serve God, and associate no creature with him; and shew kindness unto parents, and relations, and orphans, and the poor, and your neighbour who is of kin to you, and also your neighbour who is a stranger, and to your familiar companion, and the traveller, and the captives whom your right hands shall possess

wa-uʿ'budū l-laha walā tush'rikū bihi shayan wabil-wālidayni iḥ'sānan wabidhī l-qur'bā wal-yatāmā wal-masākīni wal-jāri dhī l-qur'bā wal-jāri l-junubi wal-ṣāḥibi bil-janbi wa-ib'ni l-sabīli wamā malakat aymānukum inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu man kāna mukh'tālan fakhūra

ٱلَّذِینَ یَبۡخَلُونَ وَیَأۡمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلۡبُخۡلِ وَیَكۡتُمُونَ مَاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦۗ وَأَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابࣰا مُّهِینࣰا ۝٣٧

for God loveth not the proud or vainglorious, who are covetous, and recommend covetousness unto men, and conceal that which God of his bounty hath given them, -- we have prepared a shameful punishment for the unbelievers;

alladhīna yabkhalūna wayamurūna l-nāsa bil-bukh'li wayaktumūna mā ātāhumu l-lahu min faḍlihi wa-aʿtadnā lil'kāfirīna ʿadhāban muhīna

وَٱلَّذِینَ یُنفِقُونَ أَمۡوَ ٰلَهُمۡ رِئَاۤءَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِۗ وَمَن یَكُنِ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ لَهُۥ قَرِینࣰا فَسَاۤءَ قَرِینࣰا ۝٣٨

and who bestow their wealth in charity to be observed of men, and believe not in God, nor in the last day; and whoever hath Satan for a companion, an evil companion hath he

wa-alladhīna yunfiqūna amwālahum riāa l-nāsi walā yu'minūna bil-lahi walā bil-yawmi l-ākhiri waman yakuni l-shayṭānu lahu qarīnan fasāa qarīna

وَمَاذَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ لَوۡ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَأَنفَقُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِمۡ عَلِیمًا ۝٣٩

And what harm would befall them if they should believe in God, and the last day, and give alms out of that which God hath bestowed on them? Since God knoweth them who do this

wamādhā ʿalayhim law āmanū bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wa-anfaqū mimmā razaqahumu l-lahu wakāna l-lahu bihim ʿalīma

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَظۡلِمُ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةࣲۖ وَإِن تَكُ حَسَنَةࣰ یُضَـٰعِفۡهَا وَیُؤۡتِ مِن لَّدُنۡهُ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٤٠

Verily God will not wrong any one even the weight of an ant: And if it be a good action, he will double it, and will recompense it in his sight with a great reward

inna l-laha lā yaẓlimu mith'qāla dharratin wa-in taku ḥasanatan yuḍāʿif'hā wayu'ti min ladun'hu ajran ʿaẓīma

فَكَیۡفَ إِذَا جِئۡنَا مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةِۭ بِشَهِیدࣲ وَجِئۡنَا بِكَ عَلَىٰ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ شَهِیدࣰا ۝٤١

How will it be with the unbelievers, when we shall bring a witness out of each nation against itself, and shall bring thee, O Mohammed, a witness against these people

fakayfa idhā ji'nā min kulli ummatin bishahīdin waji'nā bika ʿalā hāulāi shahīda

یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَعَصَوُا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ لَوۡ تُسَوَّىٰ بِهِمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَلَا یَكۡتُمُونَ ٱللَّهَ حَدِیثࣰا ۝٤٢

In that day they who have not believed, and have rebelled against the apostle of God, shall wish the earth was levelled with them; and they shall not be able to hide any matter from God

yawma-idhin yawaddu alladhīna kafarū waʿaṣawū l-rasūla law tusawwā bihimu l-arḍu walā yaktumūna l-laha ḥadītha

7 Purification of Soul

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقۡرَبُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأَنتُمۡ سُكَـٰرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَعۡلَمُوا۟ مَا تَقُولُونَ وَلَا جُنُبًا إِلَّا عَابِرِی سَبِیلٍ حَتَّىٰ تَغۡتَسِلُوا۟ۚ وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرۡضَىٰۤ أَوۡ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ أَوۡ جَاۤءَ أَحَدࣱ مِّنكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡغَاۤىِٕطِ أَوۡ لَـٰمَسۡتُمُ ٱلنِّسَاۤءَ فَلَمۡ تَجِدُوا۟ مَاۤءࣰ فَتَیَمَّمُوا۟ صَعِیدࣰا طَیِّبࣰا فَٱمۡسَحُوا۟ بِوُجُوهِكُمۡ وَأَیۡدِیكُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوًّا غَفُورًا ۝٤٣

O true believer , come not to prayer when ye are drunk, until ye understand what ye say; nor when ye are polluted by emission of seed, unless ye be travelling on the road, until ye wash yourselves. But if ye be sick, or on a journey, or any of you come from easing nature, or have touched women, and find no water; take fine clean sand and rub your faces and your hands therewith; for God is merciful and inclined to forgive

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā taqrabū l-ṣalata wa-antum sukārā ḥattā taʿlamū mā taqūlūna walā junuban illā ʿābirī sabīlin ḥattā taghtasilū wa-in kuntum marḍā aw ʿalā safarin aw jāa aḥadun minkum mina l-ghāiṭi aw lāmastumu l-nisāa falam tajidū māan fatayammamū ṣaʿīdan ṭayyiban fa-im'saḥū biwujūhikum wa-aydīkum inna l-laha kāna ʿafuwwan ghafūra

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ نَصِیبࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ یَشۡتَرُونَ ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةَ وَیُرِیدُونَ أَن تَضِلُّوا۟ ٱلسَّبِیلَ ۝٤٤

Hast thou not observed those unto whom part of the scripture was delivered? They sell error, and desire that ye may wander from the right way

alam tara ilā alladhīna ūtū naṣīban mina l-kitābi yashtarūna l-ḍalālata wayurīdūna an taḍillū l-sabīl

وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِأَعۡدَاۤىِٕكُمۡۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَلِیࣰّا وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ نَصِیرࣰا ۝٤٥

but God well knoweth your enemies. God is a sufficient patron, and God is a sufficient helper

wal-lahu aʿlamu bi-aʿdāikum wakafā bil-lahi waliyyan wakafā bil-lahi naṣīra

مِّنَ ٱلَّذِینَ هَادُوا۟ یُحَرِّفُونَ ٱلۡكَلِمَ عَن مَّوَاضِعِهِۦ وَیَقُولُونَ سَمِعۡنَا وَعَصَیۡنَا وَٱسۡمَعۡ غَیۡرَ مُسۡمَعࣲ وَرَ ٰعِنَا لَیَّۢا بِأَلۡسِنَتِهِمۡ وَطَعۡنࣰا فِی ٱلدِّینِۚ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ قَالُوا۟ سَمِعۡنَا وَأَطَعۡنَا وَٱسۡمَعۡ وَٱنظُرۡنَا لَكَانَ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۡ وَأَقۡوَمَ وَلَـٰكِن لَّعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُفۡرِهِمۡ فَلَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا ۝٤٦

Of the Jews there are some who pervert words from their places; and say, we have heard, and have disobeyed; and do thou hear without understanding our meaning, and look upon us: Perplexing with their tongues, and reviling the true religion. But if they had said, we have heard, and do obey; and do thou hear, and regard us: Certainly it were better for them, and more right. But God hath cursed them by reason of their infidelity; therefore a few of them only shall believe

mina alladhīna hādū yuḥarrifūna l-kalima ʿan mawāḍiʿihi wayaqūlūna samiʿ'nā waʿaṣaynā wa-is'maʿ ghayra mus'maʿin warāʿinā layyan bi-alsinatihim waṭaʿnan fī l-dīni walaw annahum qālū samiʿ'nā wa-aṭaʿnā wa-is'maʿ wa-unẓur'nā lakāna khayran lahum wa-aqwama walākin laʿanahumu l-lahu bikuf'rihim falā yu'minūna illā qalīla

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِمَا نَزَّلۡنَا مُصَدِّقࣰا لِّمَا مَعَكُم مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن نَّطۡمِسَ وُجُوهࣰا فَنَرُدَّهَا عَلَىٰۤ أَدۡبَارِهَاۤ أَوۡ نَلۡعَنَهُمۡ كَمَا لَعَنَّاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلسَّبۡتِۚ وَكَانَ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ مَفۡعُولًا ۝٤٧

O ye to whom the scriptures have been given, believe in the revelation which we have sent down, confirming that which is with you; before we deface your countenances, and render them as the back parts thereof; or curse them, as we cursed those who transgressed on the sabbath day; and the command of God was fulfilled

yāayyuhā alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba āminū bimā nazzalnā muṣaddiqan limā maʿakum min qabli an naṭmisa wujūhan fanaruddahā ʿalā adbārihā aw nalʿanahum kamā laʿannā aṣḥāba l-sabti wakāna amru l-lahi mafʿūla

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَغۡفِرُ أَن یُشۡرَكَ بِهِۦ وَیَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَ ٰلِكَ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَن یُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰۤ إِثۡمًا عَظِیمًا ۝٤٨

Surely God will not pardon the giving Him an equal; but will pardon any other sin, except that, to whom He pleaseth: And whoso giveth a companion unto God, hath devised a great wickedness

inna l-laha lā yaghfiru an yush'raka bihi wayaghfiru mā dūna dhālika liman yashāu waman yush'rik bil-lahi faqadi if'tarā ith'man ʿaẓīma

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ یُزَكُّونَ أَنفُسَهُمۚ بَلِ ٱللَّهُ یُزَكِّی مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَلَا یُظۡلَمُونَ فَتِیلًا ۝٤٩

Hast thou not observed those who justify themselves? But God justifieth whomsoever He pleaseth, nor shall they be wronged a hair

alam tara ilā alladhīna yuzakkūna anfusahum bali l-lahu yuzakkī man yashāu walā yuẓ'lamūna fatīla

ٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَۖ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦۤ إِثۡمࣰا مُّبِینًا ۝٥٠

Behold, how they imagine a lie against God; and therein is iniquity sufficiently manifest

unẓur kayfa yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba wakafā bihi ith'man mubīna

8 Kingdom for Abraham's Descendants

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ نَصِیبࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡجِبۡتِ وَٱلطَّـٰغُوتِ وَیَقُولُونَ لِلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ أَهۡدَىٰ مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ سَبِیلًا ۝٥١

Hast thou not considered those to whom part of the scripture hath been given? They believe in false gods and idols, and say of those who believe not, these are more rightly directed in the way of truth, than they who believe on Mohammed

alam tara ilā alladhīna ūtū naṣīban mina l-kitābi yu'minūna bil-jib'ti wal-ṭāghūti wayaqūlūna lilladhīna kafarū hāulāi ahdā mina alladhīna āmanū sabīla

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ وَمَن یَلۡعَنِ ٱللَّهُ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُۥ نَصِیرًا ۝٥٢

Those are the men whom God hath cursed; and unto him whom God shall curse, thou shalt surely find no helper

ulāika alladhīna laʿanahumu l-lahu waman yalʿani l-lahu falan tajida lahu naṣīra

أَمۡ لَهُمۡ نَصِیبࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُلۡكِ فَإِذࣰا لَّا یُؤۡتُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ نَقِیرًا ۝٥٣

Shall they have a part of the kingdom, since even then they would not bestow the smallest matter on men

am lahum naṣībun mina l-mul'ki fa-idhan lā yu'tūna l-nāsa naqīra

أَمۡ یَحۡسُدُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ عَلَىٰ مَاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦۖ فَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَاۤ ءَالَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُم مُّلۡكًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٥٤

Do they envy other men that which God of his bounty hath given them? We formerly gave unto the family of Abraham a book of revelations and wisdom; and we gave them a great kingdom

am yaḥsudūna l-nāsa ʿalā mā ātāhumu l-lahu min faḍlihi faqad ātaynā āla ib'rāhīma l-kitāba wal-ḥik'mata waātaynāhum mul'kan ʿaẓīma

فَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ ءَامَنَ بِهِۦ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن صَدَّ عَنۡهُۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِجَهَنَّمَ سَعِیرًا ۝٥٥

There is of them who believeth on Him; and there is of them who turneth aside from Him: But the raging fire of hell is a sufficient punishment

famin'hum man āmana bihi wamin'hum man ṣadda ʿanhu wakafā bijahannama saʿīra

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا سَوۡفَ نُصۡلِیهِمۡ نَارࣰا كُلَّمَا نَضِجَتۡ جُلُودُهُم بَدَّلۡنَـٰهُمۡ جُلُودًا غَیۡرَهَا لِیَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَزِیزًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝٥٦

Verily those who disbelieve our signs, we will surely cast to be broiled in hell fire; so often as their skins shall be well burned, we will give them other skins in exchange, that they may taste the sharper torment; for God is mighty and wise

inna alladhīna kafarū biāyātinā sawfa nuṣ'līhim nāran kullamā naḍijat julūduhum baddalnāhum julūdan ghayrahā liyadhūqū l-ʿadhāba inna l-laha kāna ʿazīzan ḥakīma

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَنُدۡخِلُهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدࣰاۖ لَّهُمۡ فِیهَاۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣱ مُّطَهَّرَةࣱۖ وَنُدۡخِلُهُمۡ ظِلࣰّا ظَلِیلًا ۝٥٧

But those who believe and do that which is right, we will bring into gardens watered by rivers, therein shall they remain for ever, and there shall they enjoy wives free from all impurity; and we will lead them into perpetual shades

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti sanud'khiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadan lahum fīhā azwājun muṭahharatun wanud'khiluhum ẓillan ẓalīla

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَأۡمُرُكُمۡ أَن تُؤَدُّوا۟ ٱلۡأَمَـٰنَـٰتِ إِلَىٰۤ أَهۡلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمۡتُم بَیۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ أَن تَحۡكُمُوا۟ بِٱلۡعَدۡلِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ نِعِمَّا یَعِظُكُم بِهِۦۤۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِیعَۢا بَصِیرࣰا ۝٥٨

Moreover God commandeth you to restore what ye are trusted with, to the owners; and when ye judge between men, that ye judge according to equity: And surely an excellent virtue it is to which God exhorteth you; for God both heareth and seeth

inna l-laha yamurukum an tu-addū l-amānāti ilā ahlihā wa-idhā ḥakamtum bayna l-nāsi an taḥkumū bil-ʿadli inna l-laha niʿimmā yaʿiẓukum bihi inna l-laha kāna samīʿan baṣīra

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ أَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَمۡرِ مِنكُمۡۖ فَإِن تَنَـٰزَعۡتُمۡ فِی شَیۡءࣲ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ إِن كُنتُمۡ تُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَحۡسَنُ تَأۡوِیلًا ۝٥٩

O true believers, obey God, and obey the apostle, and those who are in authority among you, and if ye differ in any thing, refer it unto God and the apostle, if ye believe in God, and the last day: This is better, and a fairer method of determination

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū aṭīʿū l-laha wa-aṭīʿū l-rasūla wa-ulī l-amri minkum fa-in tanāzaʿtum fī shayin faruddūhu ilā l-lahi wal-rasūli in kuntum tu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri dhālika khayrun wa-aḥsanu tawīla

9 Prophet must be obeyed

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ یَزۡعُمُونَ أَنَّهُمۡ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِمَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكَ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ یُرِیدُونَ أَن یَتَحَاكَمُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱلطَّـٰغُوتِ وَقَدۡ أُمِرُوۤا۟ أَن یَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِهِۦۖ وَیُرِیدُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ أَن یُضِلَّهُمۡ ضَلَـٰلَۢا بَعِیدࣰا ۝٦٠

Hast thou not observed those who pretend they believe in what hath been revealed unto thee, and what been revealed before thee? They desire to go to judgment before Taghut, although they have been commanded not to believe in him; and Satan desireth to seduce them into a wide error

alam tara ilā alladhīna yazʿumūna annahum āmanū bimā unzila ilayka wamā unzila min qablika yurīdūna an yataḥākamū ilā l-ṭāghūti waqad umirū an yakfurū bihi wayurīdu l-shayṭānu an yuḍillahum ḍalālan baʿīda

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ رَأَیۡتَ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ یَصُدُّونَ عَنكَ صُدُودࣰا ۝٦١

And when it is said unto them, come unto the book which God hath sent down, and to the apostle; thou seest the ungodly turn aside from thee, with great aversion

wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw ilā mā anzala l-lahu wa-ilā l-rasūli ra-ayta l-munāfiqīna yaṣuddūna ʿanka ṣudūda

فَكَیۡفَ إِذَاۤ أَصَـٰبَتۡهُم مُّصِیبَةُۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ ثُمَّ جَاۤءُوكَ یَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنۡ أَرَدۡنَاۤ إِلَّاۤ إِحۡسَـٰنࣰا وَتَوۡفِیقًا ۝٦٢

But how will they behave when a misfortune shall befall them, for that which their hands have sent before them? Then will they come unto thee, and swear by God, saying, if we intended any other, than to do good, and to reconcile the parties

fakayfa idhā aṣābathum muṣībatun bimā qaddamat aydīhim thumma jāūka yaḥlifūna bil-lahi in aradnā illā iḥ'sānan watawfīqa

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡلَمُ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَعِظۡهُمۡ وَقُل لَّهُمۡ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ قَوۡلَۢا بَلِیغࣰا ۝٦٣

God knoweth what is in the hearts of these men; therefore let them alone, and admonish them, and speak unto them a word which may affect their souls

ulāika alladhīna yaʿlamu l-lahu mā fī qulūbihim fa-aʿriḍ ʿanhum waʿiẓ'hum waqul lahum fī anfusihim qawlan balīgha

وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِیُطَاعَ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ إِذ ظَّلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ جَاۤءُوكَ فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱسۡتَغۡفَرَ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝٦٤

We have not sent any apostle, but that he might be obeyed by the permission of God: But if they, after they have injured their own souls, come unto thee, and ask pardon of God, and the apostle ask pardon for them, they shall surely find God easy to be reconciled and merciful

wamā arsalnā min rasūlin illā liyuṭāʿa bi-idh'ni l-lahi walaw annahum idh ẓalamū anfusahum jāūka fa-is'taghfarū l-laha wa-is'taghfara lahumu l-rasūlu lawajadū l-laha tawwāban raḥīma

فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ حَتَّىٰ یُحَكِّمُوكَ فِیمَا شَجَرَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا یَجِدُوا۟ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ حَرَجࣰا مِّمَّا قَضَیۡتَ وَیُسَلِّمُوا۟ تَسۡلِیمࣰا ۝٦٥

And by thy Lord they will not perfectly believe, until they make thee judge of their controversies; and shall not afterwards find in their own minds any hardship in what thou shalt determine, but shall acquiesce therein with entire submission

falā warabbika lā yu'minūna ḥattā yuḥakkimūka fīmā shajara baynahum thumma lā yajidū fī anfusihim ḥarajan mimmā qaḍayta wayusallimū taslīma

وَلَوۡ أَنَّا كَتَبۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَنِ ٱقۡتُلُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمۡ أَوِ ٱخۡرُجُوا۟ مِن دِیَـٰرِكُم مَّا فَعَلُوهُ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡۖ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ فَعَلُوا۟ مَا یُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ لَكَانَ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۡ وَأَشَدَّ تَثۡبِیتࣰا ۝٦٦

And if we had commanded them, saying, slay your selves, or depart from your houses; they would not have done it, except a few of them. And if they had done what they were admonished, it would certainly have been better for them, and more efficacious for confirming their faith

walaw annā katabnā ʿalayhim ani uq'tulū anfusakum awi ukh'rujū min diyārikum mā faʿalūhu illā qalīlun min'hum walaw annahum faʿalū mā yūʿaẓūna bihi lakāna khayran lahum wa-ashadda tathbīta

وَإِذࣰا لَّءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُم مِّن لَّدُنَّاۤ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٦٧

and we should then have surely given them in our sight an exceeding great reward

wa-idhan laātaynāhum min ladunnā ajran ʿaẓīma

وَلَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ صِرَ ٰطࣰا مُّسۡتَقِیمࣰا ۝٦٨

and we should have directed them in the right way

walahadaynāhum ṣirāṭan mus'taqīma

وَمَن یُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَنۡعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ وَٱلصِّدِّیقِینَ وَٱلشُّهَدَاۤءِ وَٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَۚ وَحَسُنَ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ رَفِیقࣰا ۝٦٩

Whoever obeyeth God and the apostle, they shall be with those unto whom God hath been gracious, of the prophets, and the sincere, and the martyrs, and the righteous; and these are the most excellent company

waman yuṭiʿi l-laha wal-rasūla fa-ulāika maʿa alladhīna anʿama l-lahu ʿalayhim mina l-nabiyīna wal-ṣidīqīna wal-shuhadāi wal-ṣāliḥīna waḥasuna ulāika rafīqa

ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَضۡلُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ عَلِیمࣰا ۝٧٠

This is bounty from God; and God is sufficiently knowing

dhālika l-faḍlu mina l-lahi wakafā bil-lahi ʿalīma

10 Believers must defend

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ خُذُوا۟ حِذۡرَكُمۡ فَٱنفِرُوا۟ ثُبَاتٍ أَوِ ٱنفِرُوا۟ جَمِیعࣰا ۝٧١

O true believers, take your necessary precaution against your enemies, and either go forth to war in separate parties, or go forth all together in a body

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū khudhū ḥidh'rakum fa-infirū thubātin awi infirū jamīʿa

وَإِنَّ مِنكُمۡ لَمَن لَّیُبَطِّئَنَّ فَإِنۡ أَصَـٰبَتۡكُم مُّصِیبَةࣱ قَالَ قَدۡ أَنۡعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیَّ إِذۡ لَمۡ أَكُن مَّعَهُمۡ شَهِیدࣰا ۝٧٢

There is of you who tarrieth behind; and if a misfortune befall you, he saith, verily God hath been gracious unto me, that I was not present with them

wa-inna minkum laman layubaṭṭi-anna fa-in aṣābatkum muṣībatun qāla qad anʿama l-lahu ʿalayya idh lam akun maʿahum shahīda

وَلَىِٕنۡ أَصَـٰبَكُمۡ فَضۡلࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَیَقُولَنَّ كَأَن لَّمۡ تَكُنۢ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَبَیۡنَهُۥ مَوَدَّةࣱ یَـٰلَیۡتَنِی كُنتُ مَعَهُمۡ فَأَفُوزَ فَوۡزًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٧٣

But if success attend you from God, he will say, -- as if there was no friendship between you and him, -- would to God I had been with them, for I should have acquired great merit

wala-in aṣābakum faḍlun mina l-lahi layaqūlanna ka-an lam takun baynakum wabaynahu mawaddatun yālaytanī kuntu maʿahum fa-afūza fawzan ʿaẓīma

۞ فَلۡیُقَـٰتِلۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَشۡرُونَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ وَمَن یُقَـٰتِلۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَیُقۡتَلۡ أَوۡ یَغۡلِبۡ فَسَوۡفَ نُؤۡتِیهِ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٧٤

Let them therefore fight for the religion of God, who part with the present life in exchange for that which is to come; for whosoever fighteth for the religion of God, whether he be slain, or be victorious, we will surely give him a great reward

falyuqātil fī sabīli l-lahi alladhīna yashrūna l-ḥayata l-dun'yā bil-ākhirati waman yuqātil fī sabīli l-lahi fayuq'tal aw yaghlib fasawfa nu'tīhi ajran ʿaẓīma

وَمَا لَكُمۡ لَا تُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡمُسۡتَضۡعَفِینَ مِنَ ٱلرِّجَالِ وَٱلنِّسَاۤءِ وَٱلۡوِلۡدَ ٰنِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَاۤ أَخۡرِجۡنَا مِنۡ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِ ٱلظَّالِمِ أَهۡلُهَا وَٱجۡعَل لَّنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِیࣰّا وَٱجۡعَل لَّنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ نَصِیرًا ۝٧٥

And what ails you, that ye fight not for God's true religion, and in defence of the weak among men, women, and children, who say, O Lord, bring us forth from this city, whose inhabitants are wicked; grant us from before thee a protector, and grant us from before thee a defender

wamā lakum lā tuqātilūna fī sabīli l-lahi wal-mus'taḍʿafīna mina l-rijāli wal-nisāi wal-wil'dāni alladhīna yaqūlūna rabbanā akhrij'nā min hādhihi l-qaryati l-ẓālimi ahluhā wa-ij'ʿal lanā min ladunka waliyyan wa-ij'ʿal lanā min ladunka naṣīra

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ یُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتِ فَقَـٰتِلُوۤا۟ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِۖ إِنَّ كَیۡدَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ كَانَ ضَعِیفًا ۝٧٦

They who believe fight for the religion of God; but they who believe not fight for the religion of Taghut. Fight therefore against the friends of Satan, for the stratagem of Satan is weak

alladhīna āmanū yuqātilūna fī sabīli l-lahi wa-alladhīna kafarū yuqātilūna fī sabīli l-ṭāghūti faqātilū awliyāa l-shayṭāni inna kayda l-shayṭāni kāna ḍaʿīfa

11 Hypocrites' Attitude

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ قِیلَ لَهُمۡ كُفُّوۤا۟ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡقِتَالُ إِذَا فَرِیقࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ یَخۡشَوۡنَ ٱلنَّاسَ كَخَشۡیَةِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡ أَشَدَّ خَشۡیَةࣰۚ وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لِمَ كَتَبۡتَ عَلَیۡنَا ٱلۡقِتَالَ لَوۡلَاۤ أَخَّرۡتَنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ قَرِیبࣲۗ قُلۡ مَتَـٰعُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا قَلِیلࣱ وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ خَیۡرࣱ لِّمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰ وَلَا تُظۡلَمُونَ فَتِیلًا ۝٧٧

Hast thou not observed those unto whom it was said, withhold your hands from war, and be constant at prayers, and pay the legal alms? But when war is commanded them, behold, a part of them fear men as they should fear God, or with a greater fear, and say, O Lord, wherefore hast thou commanded us to go to war, and hast not suffered us to wait our approaching end? Say unto them, The provision of this life is but small; but the future shall be better for him who feareth God; and ye shall not be in the least injured at the day of judgment

alam tara ilā alladhīna qīla lahum kuffū aydiyakum wa-aqīmū l-ṣalata waātū l-zakata falammā kutiba ʿalayhimu l-qitālu idhā farīqun min'hum yakhshawna l-nāsa kakhashyati l-lahi aw ashadda khashyatan waqālū rabbanā lima katabta ʿalaynā l-qitāla lawlā akhartanā ilā ajalin qarībin qul matāʿu l-dun'yā qalīlun wal-ākhiratu khayrun limani ittaqā walā tuẓ'lamūna fatīla

أَیۡنَمَا تَكُونُوا۟ یُدۡرِككُّمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ وَلَوۡ كُنتُمۡ فِی بُرُوجࣲ مُّشَیَّدَةࣲۗ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ حَسَنَةࣱ یَقُولُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِۦ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَیِّئَةࣱ یَقُولُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِۦ مِنۡ عِندِكَۚ قُلۡ كُلࣱّ مِّنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۖ فَمَالِ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ لَا یَكَادُونَ یَفۡقَهُونَ حَدِیثࣰا ۝٧٨

Wheresoever ye be, death will overtake you, although ye be in lofty towers. If good befall them, they say, this is from God; but if evil befall them, they say, this is from thee, O Mohammed: Say, all is from God; and what aileth these people, that they are so far from understanding what is said unto them

aynamā takūnū yud'rikkumu l-mawtu walaw kuntum fī burūjin mushayyadatin wa-in tuṣib'hum ḥasanatun yaqūlū hādhihi min ʿindi l-lahi wa-in tuṣib'hum sayyi-atun yaqūlū hādhihi min ʿindika qul kullun min ʿindi l-lahi famāli hāulāi l-qawmi lā yakādūna yafqahūna ḥadītha

مَّاۤ أَصَابَكَ مِنۡ حَسَنَةࣲ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِۖ وَمَاۤ أَصَابَكَ مِن سَیِّئَةࣲ فَمِن نَّفۡسِكَۚ وَأَرۡسَلۡنَـٰكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولࣰاۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِیدࣰا ۝٧٩

Whatever good befalleth thee, O man it is from God; and whatever evil befalleth thee, it is from thy self. We have sent thee an apostle unto men, and God is a sufficient witness thereof

mā aṣābaka min ḥasanatin famina l-lahi wamā aṣābaka min sayyi-atin famin nafsika wa-arsalnāka lilnnāsi rasūlan wakafā bil-lahi shahīda

مَّن یُطِعِ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدۡ أَطَاعَ ٱللَّهَۖ وَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ فَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَـٰكَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ حَفِیظࣰا ۝٨٠

Whoever obeyeth the apostle, obeyeth God; and whoever turneth back, we have not sent thee to be a keeper over them

man yuṭiʿi l-rasūla faqad aṭāʿa l-laha waman tawallā famā arsalnāka ʿalayhim ḥafīẓa

وَیَقُولُونَ طَاعَةࣱ فَإِذَا بَرَزُوا۟ مِنۡ عِندِكَ بَیَّتَ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ غَیۡرَ ٱلَّذِی تَقُولُۖ وَٱللَّهُ یَكۡتُبُ مَا یُبَیِّتُونَۖ فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَكِیلًا ۝٨١

They say, obedience: Yet when they go forth from thee, part of them meditate by night a matter different from what thou speakest; but God shall write down what they meditate by night: Therefore let them alone, and trust in God, for God is a sufficient protector

wayaqūlūna ṭāʿatun fa-idhā barazū min ʿindika bayyata ṭāifatun min'hum ghayra alladhī taqūlu wal-lahu yaktubu mā yubayyitūna fa-aʿriḍ ʿanhum watawakkal ʿalā l-lahi wakafā bil-lahi wakīla

أَفَلَا یَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَۚ وَلَوۡ كَانَ مِنۡ عِندِ غَیۡرِ ٱللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا۟ فِیهِ ٱخۡتِلَـٰفࣰا كَثِیرࣰا ۝٨٢

Do they not attentively consider the Koran? If it had been from any besides God, they would certainly have found therein many contradictions

afalā yatadabbarūna l-qur'āna walaw kāna min ʿindi ghayri l-lahi lawajadū fīhi ikh'tilāfan kathīra

وَإِذَا جَاۤءَهُمۡ أَمۡرࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡنِ أَوِ ٱلۡخَوۡفِ أَذَاعُوا۟ بِهِۦۖ وَلَوۡ رَدُّوهُ إِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ وَإِلَىٰۤ أُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَمۡرِ مِنۡهُمۡ لَعَلِمَهُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَسۡتَنۢبِطُونَهُۥ مِنۡهُمۡۗ وَلَوۡلَا فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَرَحۡمَتُهُۥ لَٱتَّبَعۡتُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنَ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا ۝٨٣

When any news cometh unto them, either of security or fear, they immediately divulge it; but if they told it to the apostle and to those who are in authority among them, such of them would understand the truth of the matter, as inform themselves thereof from the apostle and his chiefs. And if the favour of God and his mercy had not been upon you, ye had followed the devil, except a few of you

wa-idhā jāahum amrun mina l-amni awi l-khawfi adhāʿū bihi walaw raddūhu ilā l-rasūli wa-ilā ulī l-amri min'hum laʿalimahu alladhīna yastanbiṭūnahu min'hum walawlā faḍlu l-lahi ʿalaykum waraḥmatuhu la-ittabaʿtumu l-shayṭāna illā qalīla

فَقَـٰتِلۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُكَلَّفُ إِلَّا نَفۡسَكَۚ وَحَرِّضِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۖ عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن یَكُفَّ بَأۡسَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ۚ وَٱللَّهُ أَشَدُّ بَأۡسࣰا وَأَشَدُّ تَنكِیلࣰا ۝٨٤

Fight therefore for the religion of God, and oblige not any to what is difficult, except thy self; however excite the faithful to war, perhaps God will restrain the courage of the unbelievers; for God is stronger than they, and more able to punish

faqātil fī sabīli l-lahi lā tukallafu illā nafsaka waḥarriḍi l-mu'minīna ʿasā l-lahu an yakuffa basa alladhīna kafarū wal-lahu ashaddu basan wa-ashaddu tankīla

مَّن یَشۡفَعۡ شَفَـٰعَةً حَسَنَةࣰ یَكُن لَّهُۥ نَصِیبࣱ مِّنۡهَاۖ وَمَن یَشۡفَعۡ شَفَـٰعَةࣰ سَیِّئَةࣰ یَكُن لَّهُۥ كِفۡلࣱ مِّنۡهَاۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مُّقِیتࣰا ۝٨٥

He who intercedeth between men with a good intercession shall have a portion thereof; and he who intercedeth with an evil intercession shall have a portion thereof; for God overlooketh all things

man yashfaʿ shafāʿatan ḥasanatan yakun lahu naṣībun min'hā waman yashfaʿ shafāʿatan sayyi-atan yakun lahu kif'lun min'hā wakāna l-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin muqīta

وَإِذَا حُیِّیتُم بِتَحِیَّةࣲ فَحَیُّوا۟ بِأَحۡسَنَ مِنۡهَاۤ أَوۡ رُدُّوهَاۤۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءٍ حَسِیبًا ۝٨٦

When ye are saluted with a salutation, salute the person with a better salutation, or at least return the same; for God taketh an account of all things

wa-idhā ḥuyyītum bitaḥiyyatin faḥayyū bi-aḥsana min'hā aw ruddūhā inna l-laha kāna ʿalā kulli shayin ḥasība

ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ لَیَجۡمَعَنَّكُمۡ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهِۗ وَمَنۡ أَصۡدَقُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ حَدِیثࣰا ۝٨٧

God! There is no God but He; He will surely gather you together on the day of resurrection; there is no doubt of it: And who is more true than God in what he saith

al-lahu lā ilāha illā huwa layajmaʿannakum ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati lā rayba fīhi waman aṣdaqu mina l-lahi ḥadītha

12 How to deal with Hypocrites

۞ فَمَا لَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ فِئَتَیۡنِ وَٱللَّهُ أَرۡكَسَهُم بِمَا كَسَبُوۤا۟ۚ أَتُرِیدُونَ أَن تَهۡدُوا۟ مَنۡ أَضَلَّ ٱللَّهُۖ وَمَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُۥ سَبِیلࣰا ۝٨٨

Why are ye divided concerning the ungodly into two parties; since God hath overturned them for what they have committed? Will ye direct him whom God hath led astray; since for him whom God shall lead astray, thou shalt find no true path

famā lakum fī l-munāfiqīna fi-atayni wal-lahu arkasahum bimā kasabū aturīdūna an tahdū man aḍalla l-lahu waman yuḍ'lili l-lahu falan tajida lahu sabīla

وَدُّوا۟ لَوۡ تَكۡفُرُونَ كَمَا كَفَرُوا۟ فَتَكُونُونَ سَوَاۤءࣰۖ فَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ حَتَّىٰ یُهَاجِرُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَخُذُوهُمۡ وَٱقۡتُلُوهُمۡ حَیۡثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمۡۖ وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ وَلِیࣰّا وَلَا نَصِیرًا ۝٨٩

They desire that ye should become infidels, as they are infidels, and that ye should be equally wicked with themselves. Therefore take not friends from among them, until they fly their country for the religion of God; and if they turn back from the faith, take them, and kill them where-ever ye find them; and take no friend from among them, nor any helper

waddū law takfurūna kamā kafarū fatakūnūna sawāan falā tattakhidhū min'hum awliyāa ḥattā yuhājirū fī sabīli l-lahi fa-in tawallaw fakhudhūhum wa-uq'tulūhum ḥaythu wajadttumūhum walā tattakhidhū min'hum waliyyan walā naṣīra

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ یَصِلُونَ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِۭ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَبَیۡنَهُم مِّیثَـٰقٌ أَوۡ جَاۤءُوكُمۡ حَصِرَتۡ صُدُورُهُمۡ أَن یُقَـٰتِلُوكُمۡ أَوۡ یُقَـٰتِلُوا۟ قَوۡمَهُمۡۚ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ لَسَلَّطَهُمۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَلَقَـٰتَلُوكُمۡۚ فَإِنِ ٱعۡتَزَلُوكُمۡ فَلَمۡ یُقَـٰتِلُوكُمۡ وَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ إِلَیۡكُمُ ٱلسَّلَمَ فَمَا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ سَبِیلࣰا ۝٩٠

except those who go unto a people who are in alliance with you, or those who come unto you, their hearts forbidding them either to fight against you, or to fight against their own people. And if God pleased He would have permitted them to have prevailed against you, and they would have fought against you. But if they depart from you, and fight not against you, and offer you peace, God doth not allow you to take or kill of them

illā alladhīna yaṣilūna ilā qawmin baynakum wabaynahum mīthāqun aw jāūkum ḥaṣirat ṣudūruhum an yuqātilūkum aw yuqātilū qawmahum walaw shāa l-lahu lasallaṭahum ʿalaykum falaqātalūkum fa-ini iʿ'tazalūkum falam yuqātilūkum wa-alqaw ilaykumu l-salama famā jaʿala l-lahu lakum ʿalayhim sabīla

سَتَجِدُونَ ءَاخَرِینَ یُرِیدُونَ أَن یَأۡمَنُوكُمۡ وَیَأۡمَنُوا۟ قَوۡمَهُمۡ كُلَّ مَا رُدُّوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡفِتۡنَةِ أُرۡكِسُوا۟ فِیهَاۚ فَإِن لَّمۡ یَعۡتَزِلُوكُمۡ وَیُلۡقُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡكُمُ ٱلسَّلَمَ وَیَكُفُّوۤا۟ أَیۡدِیَهُمۡ فَخُذُوهُمۡ وَٱقۡتُلُوهُمۡ حَیۡثُ ثَقِفۡتُمُوهُمۡۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكُمۡ جَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰا مُّبِینࣰا ۝٩١

Ye shall find others who are desirous to enter into a confidence with you, and at the same time to preserve a confidence with their own people: So often as they return to sedition, they shall be subverted therein; and if they depart not from you, and offer you peace, and restrain their hands from warring against you, take them and kill them wheresoever ye find them; over these have we granted you a manifest power

satajidūna ākharīna yurīdūna an yamanūkum wayamanū qawmahum kulla mā ruddū ilā l-fit'nati ur'kisū fīhā fa-in lam yaʿtazilūkum wayul'qū ilaykumu l-salama wayakuffū aydiyahum fakhudhūhum wa-uq'tulūhum ḥaythu thaqif'tumūhum wa-ulāikum jaʿalnā lakum ʿalayhim sul'ṭānan mubīna

13 Murderess of a Muslim

وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤۡمِنٍ أَن یَقۡتُلَ مُؤۡمِنًا إِلَّا خَطَءࣰاۚ وَمَن قَتَلَ مُؤۡمِنًا خَطَءࣰا فَتَحۡرِیرُ رَقَبَةࣲ مُّؤۡمِنَةࣲ وَدِیَةࣱ مُّسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَىٰۤ أَهۡلِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَصَّدَّقُوا۟ۚ فَإِن كَانَ مِن قَوۡمٍ عَدُوࣲّ لَّكُمۡ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنࣱ فَتَحۡرِیرُ رَقَبَةࣲ مُّؤۡمِنَةࣲۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِن قَوۡمِۭ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَبَیۡنَهُم مِّیثَـٰقࣱ فَدِیَةࣱ مُّسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَىٰۤ أَهۡلِهِۦ وَتَحۡرِیرُ رَقَبَةࣲ مُّؤۡمِنَةࣲۖ فَمَن لَّمۡ یَجِدۡ فَصِیَامُ شَهۡرَیۡنِ مُتَتَابِعَیۡنِ تَوۡبَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝٩٢

It is not lawful for a believer to kill a believer, unless it happen by mistake; and whoso killeth a believer by mistake, the penalty shall be the freeing of a believer from slavery, and a fine to be paid to the family of the deceased, unless they remit it as alms: And if the slain person be of a people at enmity with you, and be a true believer, the penalty shall be the freeing of a believer; but if he be of a people in confederacy with you, a fine to be paid to his family, and the freeing of a believer. And he who findeth not wherewith to do this, shall fast two months consecutively, as a penance enjoined from God; and God is knowing and wise

wamā kāna limu'minin an yaqtula mu'minan illā khaṭa-an waman qatala mu'minan khaṭa-an fataḥrīru raqabatin mu'minatin wadiyatun musallamatun ilā ahlihi illā an yaṣṣaddaqū fa-in kāna min qawmin ʿaduwwin lakum wahuwa mu'minun fataḥrīru raqabatin mu'minatin wa-in kāna min qawmin baynakum wabaynahum mīthāqun fadiyatun musallamatun ilā ahlihi wataḥrīru raqabatin mu'minatin faman lam yajid faṣiyāmu shahrayni mutatābiʿayni tawbatan mina l-lahi wakāna l-lahu ʿalīman ḥakīma

وَمَن یَقۡتُلۡ مُؤۡمِنࣰا مُّتَعَمِّدࣰا فَجَزَاۤؤُهُۥ جَهَنَّمُ خَـٰلِدࣰا فِیهَا وَغَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِ وَلَعَنَهُۥ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُۥ عَذَابًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٩٣

But whoso killeth a believer designedly, his reward shall be hell; he shall remain therein for ever; and God shall be angry with him; and shall curse him, and shall prepare for him a great punishment

waman yaqtul mu'minan mutaʿammidan fajazāuhu jahannamu khālidan fīhā waghaḍiba l-lahu ʿalayhi walaʿanahu wa-aʿadda lahu ʿadhāban ʿaẓīma

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَتَبَیَّنُوا۟ وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَنۡ أَلۡقَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكُمُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمَ لَسۡتَ مُؤۡمِنࣰا تَبۡتَغُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا فَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِیرَةࣱۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ كُنتُم مِّن قَبۡلُ فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَتَبَیَّنُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣰا ۝٩٤

O true believers, when ye are on a march in defence of the true religion, justly discern such as ye shall happen to meet, and say not unto him who saluteth you, thou art not a true believer; seeking the accidental goods of the present life; for with God is much spoil: Such have ye formerly been; but God hath been gracious unto you; therefore make a just discernment, for God is well acquainted with that which ye do

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā ḍarabtum fī sabīli l-lahi fatabayyanū walā taqūlū liman alqā ilaykumu l-salāma lasta mu'minan tabtaghūna ʿaraḍa l-ḥayati l-dun'yā faʿinda l-lahi maghānimu kathīratun kadhālika kuntum min qablu famanna l-lahu ʿalaykum fatabayyanū inna l-laha kāna bimā taʿmalūna khabīra

لَّا یَسۡتَوِی ٱلۡقَـٰعِدُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ غَیۡرُ أُو۟لِی ٱلضَّرَرِ وَٱلۡمُجَـٰهِدُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِهِمۡۚ فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُجَـٰهِدِینَ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِهِمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡقَـٰعِدِینَ دَرَجَةࣰۚ وَكُلࣰّا وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚ وَفَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُجَـٰهِدِینَ عَلَى ٱلۡقَـٰعِدِینَ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٩٥

Those believers who sit still at home, not having any hurt, and those who employ their fortunes and their persons for the religion of God, shall not be held equal. God hath preferred those who employ their fortunes and their persons in that cause, to a degree of honour above those who sit at home: God hath indeed promised every one paradise, but God hath preferred those who fight for the faith before those who sit still

lā yastawī l-qāʿidūna mina l-mu'minīna ghayru ulī l-ḍarari wal-mujāhidūna fī sabīli l-lahi bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim faḍḍala l-lahu l-mujāhidīna bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim ʿalā l-qāʿidīna darajatan wakullan waʿada l-lahu l-ḥus'nā wafaḍḍala l-lahu l-mujāhidīna ʿalā l-qāʿidīna ajran ʿaẓīma

دَرَجَـٰتࣲ مِّنۡهُ وَمَغۡفِرَةࣰ وَرَحۡمَةࣰۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمًا ۝٩٦

by adding unto them a great reward, by degrees of honour conferred on them from him, and by granting them forgiveness, and mercy; for God is indulgent and merciful

darajātin min'hu wamaghfiratan waraḥmatan wakāna l-lahu ghafūran raḥīma

14 Muslims against enemy

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ تَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ ظَالِمِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ قَالُوا۟ فِیمَ كُنتُمۡۖ قَالُوا۟ كُنَّا مُسۡتَضۡعَفِینَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ قَالُوۤا۟ أَلَمۡ تَكُنۡ أَرۡضُ ٱللَّهِ وَ ٰسِعَةࣰ فَتُهَاجِرُوا۟ فِیهَاۚ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَسَاۤءَتۡ مَصِیرًا ۝٩٧

Moreover unto those whom the angels put to death, having injured their own souls, the angels said, of what religion were ye? They answered, we were weak in the earth. The angels replied, was not God's earth wide enough, that ye might fly therein to a place of refuge? Therefore their habitation shall be hell; and an evil journey shall it be thither

inna alladhīna tawaffāhumu l-malāikatu ẓālimī anfusihim qālū fīma kuntum qālū kunnā mus'taḍʿafīna fī l-arḍi qālū alam takun arḍu l-lahi wāsiʿatan fatuhājirū fīhā fa-ulāika mawāhum jahannamu wasāat maṣīra

إِلَّا ٱلۡمُسۡتَضۡعَفِینَ مِنَ ٱلرِّجَالِ وَٱلنِّسَاۤءِ وَٱلۡوِلۡدَ ٰنِ لَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ حِیلَةࣰ وَلَا یَهۡتَدُونَ سَبِیلࣰا ۝٩٨

Except the weak among men, and women, and children, who were not able to find means, and were not directed in the way

illā l-mus'taḍʿafīna mina l-rijāli wal-nisāi wal-wil'dāni lā yastaṭīʿūna ḥīlatan walā yahtadūna sabīla

فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن یَعۡفُوَ عَنۡهُمۡۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَفُوًّا غَفُورࣰا ۝٩٩

these peradventure God will pardon, for God is ready to forgive and gracious

fa-ulāika ʿasā l-lahu an yaʿfuwa ʿanhum wakāna l-lahu ʿafuwwan ghafūra

۞ وَمَن یُهَاجِرۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ یَجِدۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُرَ ٰغَمࣰا كَثِیرࣰا وَسَعَةࣰۚ وَمَن یَخۡرُجۡ مِنۢ بَیۡتِهِۦ مُهَاجِرًا إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ثُمَّ یُدۡرِكۡهُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ فَقَدۡ وَقَعَ أَجۡرُهُۥ عَلَى ٱللَّهِۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝١٠٠

Whosoever flieth from his country for the sake of God's true religion, shall find in the earth many forced to do the same, and plenty of provisions. And whoever departeth from his house, and flieth unto God and his apostle, if death overtake him in the way, God will be obliged to reward him, for God is gracious and merciful

waman yuhājir fī sabīli l-lahi yajid fī l-arḍi murāghaman kathīran wasaʿatan waman yakhruj min baytihi muhājiran ilā l-lahi warasūlihi thumma yud'rik'hu l-mawtu faqad waqaʿa ajruhu ʿalā l-lahi wakāna l-lahu ghafūran raḥīma

15 Prayer when Fighting

وَإِذَا ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَلَیۡسَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَقۡصُرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ إِنۡ خِفۡتُمۡ أَن یَفۡتِنَكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ كَانُوا۟ لَكُمۡ عَدُوࣰّا مُّبِینࣰا ۝١٠١

When ye march to war in the earth, it shall be no crime in you if ye shorten your prayers, in case ye fear the infidels may attack you; for the infidels are your open enemy

wa-idhā ḍarabtum fī l-arḍi falaysa ʿalaykum junāḥun an taqṣurū mina l-ṣalati in khif'tum an yaftinakumu alladhīna kafarū inna l-kāfirīna kānū lakum ʿaduwwan mubīna

وَإِذَا كُنتَ فِیهِمۡ فَأَقَمۡتَ لَهُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَلۡتَقُمۡ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۡهُم مَّعَكَ وَلۡیَأۡخُذُوۤا۟ أَسۡلِحَتَهُمۡۖ فَإِذَا سَجَدُوا۟ فَلۡیَكُونُوا۟ مِن وَرَاۤىِٕكُمۡ وَلۡتَأۡتِ طَاۤىِٕفَةٌ أُخۡرَىٰ لَمۡ یُصَلُّوا۟ فَلۡیُصَلُّوا۟ مَعَكَ وَلۡیَأۡخُذُوا۟ حِذۡرَهُمۡ وَأَسۡلِحَتَهُمۡۗ وَدَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡ تَغۡفُلُونَ عَنۡ أَسۡلِحَتِكُمۡ وَأَمۡتِعَتِكُمۡ فَیَمِیلُونَ عَلَیۡكُم مَّیۡلَةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ إِن كَانَ بِكُمۡ أَذࣰى مِّن مَّطَرٍ أَوۡ كُنتُم مَّرۡضَىٰۤ أَن تَضَعُوۤا۟ أَسۡلِحَتَكُمۡۖ وَخُذُوا۟ حِذۡرَكُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ أَعَدَّ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابࣰا مُّهِینࣰا ۝١٠٢

But when thou, O prophet, shalt be among them, and shalt pray with them, let a party of them arise to prayer with thee, and let them take their arms; and when they shall have worshipped, let them stand behind you, and let another party come that hath not prayed, and let them pray with thee, and let them be cautious and take their arms. The unbelievers would that ye should neglect your arms and your baggage while ye pray, that they might turn upon you at once. It shall be no crime in you, if ye be incommoded by rain, or be sick, that ye lay down your arms; but take your necessary precaution: God hath prepared for the unbelievers an ignominious punishment

wa-idhā kunta fīhim fa-aqamta lahumu l-ṣalata faltaqum ṭāifatun min'hum maʿaka walyakhudhū asliḥatahum fa-idhā sajadū falyakūnū min warāikum waltati ṭāifatun ukh'rā lam yuṣallū falyuṣallū maʿaka walyakhudhū ḥidh'rahum wa-asliḥatahum wadda alladhīna kafarū law taghfulūna ʿan asliḥatikum wa-amtiʿatikum fayamīlūna ʿalaykum maylatan wāḥidatan walā junāḥa ʿalaykum in kāna bikum adhan min maṭarin aw kuntum marḍā an taḍaʿū asliḥatakum wakhudhū ḥidh'rakum inna l-laha aʿadda lil'kāfirīna ʿadhāban muhīna

فَإِذَا قَضَیۡتُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَٱذۡكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قِیَـٰمࣰا وَقُعُودࣰا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِكُمۡۚ فَإِذَا ٱطۡمَأۡنَنتُمۡ فَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۚ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتۡ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ كِتَـٰبࣰا مَّوۡقُوتࣰا ۝١٠٣

And when ye shall have ended your prayer, remember God, standing, and sitting, and lying on your sides. But when ye are secure from danger, complete your prayer; for prayer is commanded the faithful, and appointed to be said at the stated times

fa-idhā qaḍaytumu l-ṣalata fa-udh'kurū l-laha qiyāman waquʿūdan waʿalā junūbikum fa-idhā iṭ'manantum fa-aqīmū l-ṣalata inna l-ṣalata kānat ʿalā l-mu'minīna kitāban mawqūta

وَلَا تَهِنُوا۟ فِی ٱبۡتِغَاۤءِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِۖ إِن تَكُونُوا۟ تَأۡلَمُونَ فَإِنَّهُمۡ یَأۡلَمُونَ كَمَا تَأۡلَمُونَۖ وَتَرۡجُونَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَرۡجُونَۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمًا ۝١٠٤

Be not negligent in seeking out the unbelieving people, though ye suffer some inconvenience; for they also shall suffer, as ye suffer, and ye hope for a reward from God which they cannot hope for; and God is knowing and wise

walā tahinū fī ib'tighāi l-qawmi in takūnū talamūna fa-innahum yalamūna kamā talamūna watarjūna mina l-lahi mā lā yarjūna wakāna l-lahu ʿalīman ḥakīma

16 Hypocrites are Dishonest

إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِتَحۡكُمَ بَیۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِمَاۤ أَرَىٰكَ ٱللَّهُۚ وَلَا تَكُن لِّلۡخَاۤىِٕنِینَ خَصِیمࣰا ۝١٠٥

We have sent down unto thee the book of the Koran with truth; that thou mayest judge between men through that wisdom which God sheweth thee therein; and be not an advocate for the fraudulent

innā anzalnā ilayka l-kitāba bil-ḥaqi litaḥkuma bayna l-nāsi bimā arāka l-lahu walā takun lil'khāinīna khaṣīma

وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرِ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝١٠٦

but ask pardon of God for thy wrong intention, since God is indulgent and merciful

wa-is'taghfiri l-laha inna l-laha kāna ghafūran raḥīma

وَلَا تُجَـٰدِلۡ عَنِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَخۡتَانُونَ أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ خَوَّانًا أَثِیمࣰا ۝١٠٧

Dispute not for those who deceive one another, for God loveth not him who is a deceiver or unjust

walā tujādil ʿani alladhīna yakhtānūna anfusahum inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu man kāna khawwānan athīma

یَسۡتَخۡفُونَ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَا یَسۡتَخۡفُونَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مَعَهُمۡ إِذۡ یُبَیِّتُونَ مَا لَا یَرۡضَىٰ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِیطًا ۝١٠٨

Such conceal themselves from men, but they conceal not themselves from God; for He is with them when they imagine by night a saying which pleaseth Him not, and God comprehendeth what they do

yastakhfūna mina l-nāsi walā yastakhfūna mina l-lahi wahuwa maʿahum idh yubayyitūna mā lā yarḍā mina l-qawli wakāna l-lahu bimā yaʿmalūna muḥīṭa

هَـٰۤأَنتُمۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ جَـٰدَلۡتُمۡ عَنۡهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا فَمَن یُجَـٰدِلُ ٱللَّهَ عَنۡهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ أَم مَّن یَكُونُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَكِیلࣰا ۝١٠٩

Behold, ye are they who have disputed for them in this present life; but who shall dispute with God for them on the day of resurrection, or who will become their patron

hāantum hāulāi jādaltum ʿanhum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā faman yujādilu l-laha ʿanhum yawma l-qiyāmati am man yakūnu ʿalayhim wakīla

وَمَن یَعۡمَلۡ سُوۤءًا أَوۡ یَظۡلِمۡ نَفۡسَهُۥ ثُمَّ یَسۡتَغۡفِرِ ٱللَّهَ یَجِدِ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝١١٠

Yet he who doth evil, or injureth his own soul, and afterwards asketh pardon of God, shall find God gracious and merciful

waman yaʿmal sūan aw yaẓlim nafsahu thumma yastaghfiri l-laha yajidi l-laha ghafūran raḥīma

وَمَن یَكۡسِبۡ إِثۡمࣰا فَإِنَّمَا یَكۡسِبُهُۥ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝١١١

Whoso committeth wickedness, committeth it against his own soul: God is knowing and wise

waman yaksib ith'man fa-innamā yaksibuhu ʿalā nafsihi wakāna l-lahu ʿalīman ḥakīma

وَمَن یَكۡسِبۡ خَطِیۤءَةً أَوۡ إِثۡمࣰا ثُمَّ یَرۡمِ بِهِۦ بَرِیۤءࣰا فَقَدِ ٱحۡتَمَلَ بُهۡتَـٰنࣰا وَإِثۡمࣰا مُّبِینࣰا ۝١١٢

And whoso committeth a sin or iniquity, and afterwards layeth it on the innocent, he shall surely bear the guilt of calumny and manifest injustice

waman yaksib khaṭīatan aw ith'man thumma yarmi bihi barīan faqadi iḥ'tamala buh'tānan wa-ith'man mubīna

17 Secret Counsels of Hypocrites

وَلَوۡلَا فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡكَ وَرَحۡمَتُهُۥ لَهَمَّت طَّاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُضِلُّوكَ وَمَا یُضِلُّونَ إِلَّاۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡۖ وَمَا یَضُرُّونَكَ مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ وَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَعَلَّمَكَ مَا لَمۡ تَكُن تَعۡلَمُۚ وَكَانَ فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡكَ عَظِیمࣰا ۝١١٣

If the indulgence and mercy of God had not been upon thee, surely a part of them had studied to seduce thee; but they shall seduce themselves only, and shall not hurt thee at all. God hath sent down unto thee the book of the Koran and wisdom, and hath taught thee that which thou knewest not; for the favour of God hath been great towards thee

walawlā faḍlu l-lahi ʿalayka waraḥmatuhu lahammat ṭāifatun min'hum an yuḍillūka wamā yuḍillūna illā anfusahum wamā yaḍurrūnaka min shayin wa-anzala l-lahu ʿalayka l-kitāba wal-ḥik'mata waʿallamaka mā lam takun taʿlamu wakāna faḍlu l-lahi ʿalayka ʿaẓīma

۞ لَّا خَیۡرَ فِی كَثِیرࣲ مِّن نَّجۡوَىٰهُمۡ إِلَّا مَنۡ أَمَرَ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَوۡ مَعۡرُوفٍ أَوۡ إِصۡلَـٰحِۭ بَیۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِۚ وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱبۡتِغَاۤءَ مَرۡضَاتِ ٱللَّهِ فَسَوۡفَ نُؤۡتِیهِ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝١١٤

There is no good in the multitude of their private discourses, unless in the discourse of him who recommendeth alms, or that which is right, or agreement amongst men: Whoever doth this out of a desire to please God, We will surely give him a great reward

lā khayra fī kathīrin min najwāhum illā man amara biṣadaqatin aw maʿrūfin aw iṣ'lāḥin bayna l-nāsi waman yafʿal dhālika ib'tighāa marḍāti l-lahi fasawfa nu'tīhi ajran ʿaẓīma

وَمَن یُشَاقِقِ ٱلرَّسُولَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَیَّنَ لَهُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَیَتَّبِعۡ غَیۡرَ سَبِیلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ نُوَلِّهِۦ مَا تَوَلَّىٰ وَنُصۡلِهِۦ جَهَنَّمَۖ وَسَاۤءَتۡ مَصِیرًا ۝١١٥

But whoso separateth himself from the apostle, after true direction hath been manifested unto him, and followeth any other way, than that of the true believers, we will cause him to obtain that to which he is inclined, and will cast him to be burned in hell; and an unhappy journey shall it be thither

waman yushāqiqi l-rasūla min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahu l-hudā wayattabiʿ ghayra sabīli l-mu'minīna nuwallihi mā tawallā wanuṣ'lihi jahannama wasāat maṣīra

18 Idolatry condemned

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَغۡفِرُ أَن یُشۡرَكَ بِهِۦ وَیَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَ ٰلِكَ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَن یُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ ضَلَّ ضَلَـٰلَۢا بَعِیدًا ۝١١٦

Verily God will not pardon the giving Him a companion, but He will pardon any crime besides that, unto whom He pleaseth: And he who giveth a companion unto God, is surely led aside into a wide mistake

inna l-laha lā yaghfiru an yush'raka bihi wayaghfiru mā dūna dhālika liman yashāu waman yush'rik bil-lahi faqad ḍalla ḍalālan baʿīda

إِن یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ إِنَـٰثࣰا وَإِن یَدۡعُونَ إِلَّا شَیۡطَـٰنࣰا مَّرِیدࣰا ۝١١٧

The infidels invoke beside Him only female deities; and only invoke rebellious Satan

in yadʿūna min dūnihi illā ināthan wa-in yadʿūna illā shayṭānan marīda

لَّعَنَهُ ٱللَّهُۘ وَقَالَ لَأَتَّخِذَنَّ مِنۡ عِبَادِكَ نَصِیبࣰا مَّفۡرُوضࣰا ۝١١٨

God cursed him; and he said, verily I will take of thy servants a part cut off from the rest

laʿanahu l-lahu waqāla la-attakhidhanna min ʿibādika naṣīban mafrūḍa

وَلَأُضِلَّنَّهُمۡ وَلَأُمَنِّیَنَّهُمۡ وَلَءَامُرَنَّهُمۡ فَلَیُبَتِّكُنَّ ءَاذَانَ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ وَلَءَامُرَنَّهُمۡ فَلَیُغَیِّرُنَّ خَلۡقَ ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَن یَتَّخِذِ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنَ وَلِیࣰّا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ خَسِرَ خُسۡرَانࣰا مُّبِینࣰا ۝١١٩

and I will seduce them, and will insinuate vain desires into them, and I will command them and they shall cut off the ears of cattle; and I will command them and they shall change God's creature. But whoever taketh Satan for his patron, besides God, shall surely perish with a manifest destruction

wala-uḍillannahum wala-umanniyannahum walaāmurannahum falayubattikunna ādhāna l-anʿāmi walaāmurannahum falayughayyirunna khalqa l-lahi waman yattakhidhi l-shayṭāna waliyyan min dūni l-lahi faqad khasira khus'rānan mubīna

یَعِدُهُمۡ وَیُمَنِّیهِمۡۖ وَمَا یَعِدُهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا ۝١٢٠

He maketh them promises, and insinuateth into them vain desires; yet Satan maketh them only deceitful promises

yaʿiduhum wayumannīhim wamā yaʿiduhumu l-shayṭānu illā ghurūra

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ وَلَا یَجِدُونَ عَنۡهَا مَحِیصࣰا ۝١٢١

The receptacle of these shall be hell, they shall find no refuge from it

ulāika mawāhum jahannamu walā yajidūna ʿanhā maḥīṣa

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَنُدۡخِلُهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدࣰاۖ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣰّاۚ وَمَنۡ أَصۡدَقُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ قِیلࣰا ۝١٢٢

But they who believe, and do good works, We will surely lead them into gardens, through which rivers flow, they shall continue therein for ever, according to the true promise of God; and who is more true than God in what He saith

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti sanud'khiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadan waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqan waman aṣdaqu mina l-lahi qīla

لَّیۡسَ بِأَمَانِیِّكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَمَانِیِّ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِۗ مَن یَعۡمَلۡ سُوۤءࣰا یُجۡزَ بِهِۦ وَلَا یَجِدۡ لَهُۥ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِیࣰّا وَلَا نَصِیرࣰا ۝١٢٣

It shall not be according to your desires, nor according to the desires of those who have received the scriptures. Whoso doth evil, shall be rewarded for it; and shall not find any patron or helper, beside God

laysa bi-amāniyyikum walā amāniyyi ahli l-kitābi man yaʿmal sūan yuj'za bihi walā yajid lahu min dūni l-lahi waliyyan walā naṣīra

وَمَن یَعۡمَلۡ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ مِن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنࣱ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یَدۡخُلُونَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ وَلَا یُظۡلَمُونَ نَقِیرࣰا ۝١٢٤

but whoso doth good works, whether he be male or female, and is a true believer; they shall be admitted into paradise, and shall not in the least be unjustly dealt with

waman yaʿmal mina l-ṣāliḥāti min dhakarin aw unthā wahuwa mu'minun fa-ulāika yadkhulūna l-janata walā yuẓ'lamūna naqīra

وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ دِینࣰا مِّمَّنۡ أَسۡلَمَ وَجۡهَهُۥ لِلَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنࣱ وَٱتَّبَعَ مِلَّةَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ حَنِیفࣰاۗ وَٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ خَلِیلࣰا ۝١٢٥

Who is better in point of religion, than he who resigneth himself unto God, and is a worker of righteousness, and followeth the law of Abraham the orhodox? Since God took Abraham for his friend

waman aḥsanu dīnan mimman aslama wajhahu lillahi wahuwa muḥ'sinun wa-ittabaʿa millata ib'rāhīma ḥanīfan wa-ittakhadha l-lahu ib'rāhīma khalīla

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مُّحِیطࣰا ۝١٢٦

And to God belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth; God comprehendeth all things

walillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wakāna l-lahu bikulli shayin muḥīṭa

19 Equitable Dealings

وَیَسۡتَفۡتُونَكَ فِی ٱلنِّسَاۤءِۖ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یُفۡتِیكُمۡ فِیهِنَّ وَمَا یُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ فِی یَتَـٰمَى ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ ٱلَّـٰتِی لَا تُؤۡتُونَهُنَّ مَا كُتِبَ لَهُنَّ وَتَرۡغَبُونَ أَن تَنكِحُوهُنَّ وَٱلۡمُسۡتَضۡعَفِینَ مِنَ ٱلۡوِلۡدَ ٰنِ وَأَن تَقُومُوا۟ لِلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۚ وَمَا تَفۡعَلُوا۟ مِنۡ خَیۡرࣲ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِهِۦ عَلِیمࣰا ۝١٢٧

They will consult thee concerning women; answer, God instructeth you concerning them, and that which is read unto you in the book of the Koran concerning female orphans, to whom ye give not that which is ordained them, neither will ye marry them, and concerning weak infants, and that ye observe justice towards orphans: Whatever good ye do, God knoweth it

wayastaftūnaka fī l-nisāi quli l-lahu yuf'tīkum fīhinna wamā yut'lā ʿalaykum fī l-kitābi fī yatāmā l-nisāi allātī lā tu'tūnahunna mā kutiba lahunna watarghabūna an tankiḥūhunna wal-mus'taḍʿafīna mina l-wil'dāni wa-an taqūmū lil'yatāmā bil-qis'ṭi wamā tafʿalū min khayrin fa-inna l-laha kāna bihi ʿalīma

وَإِنِ ٱمۡرَأَةٌ خَافَتۡ مِنۢ بَعۡلِهَا نُشُوزًا أَوۡ إِعۡرَاضࣰا فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡهِمَاۤ أَن یُصۡلِحَا بَیۡنَهُمَا صُلۡحࣰاۚ وَٱلصُّلۡحُ خَیۡرࣱۗ وَأُحۡضِرَتِ ٱلۡأَنفُسُ ٱلشُّحَّۚ وَإِن تُحۡسِنُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣰا ۝١٢٨

If a woman fear ill usage, or aversion from her husband, it shall be no crime in them if they agree the matter amicably between themselves; for a reconciliation is better than a separation. Mens souls are naturally inclined to covetousness: But if ye be kind towards women, and fear to wrong them, God is well acquainted with what ye do

wa-ini im'ra-atun khāfat min baʿlihā nushūzan aw iʿ'rāḍan falā junāḥa ʿalayhimā an yuṣ'liḥā baynahumā ṣul'ḥan wal-ṣul'ḥu khayrun wa-uḥ'ḍirati l-anfusu l-shuḥa wa-in tuḥ'sinū watattaqū fa-inna l-laha kāna bimā taʿmalūna khabīra

وَلَن تَسۡتَطِیعُوۤا۟ أَن تَعۡدِلُوا۟ بَیۡنَ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ وَلَوۡ حَرَصۡتُمۡۖ فَلَا تَمِیلُوا۟ كُلَّ ٱلۡمَیۡلِ فَتَذَرُوهَا كَٱلۡمُعَلَّقَةِۚ وَإِن تُصۡلِحُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝١٢٩

Ye can by no means carry your selves equally between women in all respects, although ye study to do it; Therefore turn not from a wife with all manner of aversion, nor leave her like one in suspense: If ye agree, and fear to abuse your wives, God is gracious and merciful

walan tastaṭīʿū an taʿdilū bayna l-nisāi walaw ḥaraṣtum falā tamīlū kulla l-mayli fatadharūhā kal-muʿalaqati wa-in tuṣ'liḥū watattaqū fa-inna l-laha kāna ghafūran raḥīma

وَإِن یَتَفَرَّقَا یُغۡنِ ٱللَّهُ كُلࣰّا مِّن سَعَتِهِۦۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ وَ ٰسِعًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝١٣٠

but if they separate, God will satisfy them both of His abundance; for God is extensive and wise

wa-in yatafarraqā yugh'ni l-lahu kullan min saʿatihi wakāna l-lahu wāsiʿan ḥakīma

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَلَقَدۡ وَصَّیۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ وَإِیَّاكُمۡ أَنِ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَۚ وَإِن تَكۡفُرُوا۟ فَإِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَنِیًّا حَمِیدࣰا ۝١٣١

and unto God belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth. We have already commanded those unto whom the scriptures were given before you, and we command you also, saying, fear God; but if ye disbelieve, unto God belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth; and God is self-sufficient, and to be praised

walillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi walaqad waṣṣaynā alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba min qablikum wa-iyyākum ani ittaqū l-laha wa-in takfurū fa-inna lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wakāna l-lahu ghaniyyan ḥamīda

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَكِیلًا ۝١٣٢

for unto God belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth, and God is a sufficient protector

walillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wakafā bil-lahi wakīla

إِن یَشَأۡ یُذۡهِبۡكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَیَأۡتِ بِءَاخَرِینَۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ ذَ ٰلِكَ قَدِیرࣰا ۝١٣٣

If He pleaseth He will take you away, O men, and will produce others in your stead; for God is able to do this

in yasha yudh'hib'kum ayyuhā l-nāsu wayati biākharīna wakāna l-lahu ʿalā dhālika qadīra

مَّن كَانَ یُرِیدُ ثَوَابَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا فَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ ثَوَابُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ سَمِیعَۢا بَصِیرࣰا ۝١٣٤

Whoso desireth the reward of this world, verily with God is the reward of this world, and also of that which is to come; God both heareth and seeth

man kāna yurīdu thawāba l-dun'yā faʿinda l-lahi thawābu l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wakāna l-lahu samīʿan baṣīra

20 Hypocrisy Condemned

۞ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُونُوا۟ قَوَّ ٰمِینَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ شُهَدَاۤءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَوِ ٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَیۡنِ وَٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَۚ إِن یَكُنۡ غَنِیًّا أَوۡ فَقِیرࣰا فَٱللَّهُ أَوۡلَىٰ بِهِمَاۖ فَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ ٱلۡهَوَىٰۤ أَن تَعۡدِلُوا۟ۚ وَإِن تَلۡوُۥۤا۟ أَوۡ تُعۡرِضُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣰا ۝١٣٥

O true believers, observe justice when ye bear witness before God, although it be against your selves, or your parents, or relations; whether the party be rich, or whether he be poor; for God is more worthy than them both: Therefore follow not your own lust in bearing testimony, so that ye swerve from justice. And whether ye wrest your evidence, or decline giving it, God is well acquainted with that which ye do

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū kūnū qawwāmīna bil-qis'ṭi shuhadāa lillahi walaw ʿalā anfusikum awi l-wālidayni wal-aqrabīna in yakun ghaniyyan aw faqīran fal-lahu awlā bihimā falā tattabiʿū l-hawā an taʿdilū wa-in talwū aw tuʿ'riḍū fa-inna l-laha kāna bimā taʿmalūna khabīra

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلَّذِی نَزَّلَ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلَ مِن قَبۡلُۚ وَمَن یَكۡفُرۡ بِٱللَّهِ وَمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَتِهِۦ وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ فَقَدۡ ضَلَّ ضَلَـٰلَۢا بَعِیدًا ۝١٣٦

O true believers, believe in God and his apostle, and the book which he hath caused to descend unto his apostle, and the book which He hath formerly sent down. And whosoever believeth not in God, and his angels, and his scriptures, and his apostles, and the last day, he surely erreth in a wide mistake

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū āminū bil-lahi warasūlihi wal-kitābi alladhī nazzala ʿalā rasūlihi wal-kitābi alladhī anzala min qablu waman yakfur bil-lahi wamalāikatihi wakutubihi warusulihi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri faqad ḍalla ḍalālan baʿīda

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ ثُمَّ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ ثُمَّ ٱزۡدَادُوا۟ كُفۡرࣰا لَّمۡ یَكُنِ ٱللَّهُ لِیَغۡفِرَ لَهُمۡ وَلَا لِیَهۡدِیَهُمۡ سَبِیلَۢا ۝١٣٧

Moreover they who believed, and afterwards became infidels, and then believed again, and after that disbelieved, and increased in infidelity, God will by no means forgive them, nor direct them into the right way

inna alladhīna āmanū thumma kafarū thumma āmanū thumma kafarū thumma iz'dādū kuf'ran lam yakuni l-lahu liyaghfira lahum walā liyahdiyahum sabīla

بَشِّرِ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ بِأَنَّ لَهُمۡ عَذَابًا أَلِیمًا ۝١٣٨

Declare unto the ungodly that they shall suffer a painful punishment

bashiri l-munāfiqīna bi-anna lahum ʿadhāban alīma

ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَّخِذُونَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ مِن دُونِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۚ أَیَبۡتَغُونَ عِندَهُمُ ٱلۡعِزَّةَ فَإِنَّ ٱلۡعِزَّةَ لِلَّهِ جَمِیعࣰا ۝١٣٩

They who take the unbelievers for their protectors, besides the faithful, do they seek for power with them? Since all power belongeth unto God

alladhīna yattakhidhūna l-kāfirīna awliyāa min dūni l-mu'minīna ayabtaghūna ʿindahumu l-ʿizata fa-inna l-ʿizata lillahi jamīʿa

وَقَدۡ نَزَّلَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أَنۡ إِذَا سَمِعۡتُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ یُكۡفَرُ بِهَا وَیُسۡتَهۡزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقۡعُدُوا۟ مَعَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ یَخُوضُوا۟ فِی حَدِیثٍ غَیۡرِهِۦۤ إِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا مِّثۡلُهُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ جَامِعُ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ وَٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ فِی جَهَنَّمَ جَمِیعًا ۝١٤٠

And he hath already revealed unto you, in the book of the Koran, the following passage, when ye shall hear the signs of God, they shall not be believed, but they shall be laughed to scorn. Therefore sit not with them who believe not, until they engage in different discourse; for if ye do ye will certainly become like unto them. God will surely gather the ungodly and the unbelievers together in hell

waqad nazzala ʿalaykum fī l-kitābi an idhā samiʿ'tum āyāti l-lahi yuk'faru bihā wayus'tahza-u bihā falā taqʿudū maʿahum ḥattā yakhūḍū fī ḥadīthin ghayrihi innakum idhan mith'luhum inna l-laha jāmiʿu l-munāfiqīna wal-kāfirīna fī jahannama jamīʿa

ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَرَبَّصُونَ بِكُمۡ فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمۡ فَتۡحࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ قَالُوۤا۟ أَلَمۡ نَكُن مَّعَكُمۡ وَإِن كَانَ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ نَصِیبࣱ قَالُوۤا۟ أَلَمۡ نَسۡتَحۡوِذۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَنَمۡنَعۡكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۚ فَٱللَّهُ یَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ وَلَن یَجۡعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ سَبِیلًا ۝١٤١

They who wait to observe what befalleth you, if victory be granted you from God, say, were we not with you? But if any advantage happen to the infidels, they say unto them, were we not superior to you, and have we not defended you against the believers? God shall judge between you on the day of resurrection; and God will not grant the unbelievers means to prevail over the faithful

alladhīna yatarabbaṣūna bikum fa-in kāna lakum fatḥun mina l-lahi qālū alam nakun maʿakum wa-in kāna lil'kāfirīna naṣībun qālū alam nastaḥwidh ʿalaykum wanamnaʿkum mina l-mu'minīna fal-lahu yaḥkumu baynakum yawma l-qiyāmati walan yajʿala l-lahu lil'kāfirīna ʿalā l-mu'minīna sabīla

21 End of Hypocrites

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ یُخَـٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَهُوَ خَـٰدِعُهُمۡ وَإِذَا قَامُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ قَامُوا۟ كُسَالَىٰ یُرَاۤءُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ وَلَا یَذۡكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا ۝١٤٢

The hypocrites act deceitfully with God, but he will deceive them; and when they stand up to pray, they stand carelesly, affecting to be seen of men, and remember not God, unless a little

inna l-munāfiqīna yukhādiʿūna l-laha wahuwa khādiʿuhum wa-idhā qāmū ilā l-ṣalati qāmū kusālā yurāūna l-nāsa walā yadhkurūna l-laha illā qalīla

مُّذَبۡذَبِینَ بَیۡنَ ذَ ٰلِكَ لَاۤ إِلَىٰ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ وَلَاۤ إِلَىٰ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِۚ وَمَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُۥ سَبِیلࣰا ۝١٤٣

wavering between faith and infidelity, and adhering neither unto these nor unto those: And for him whom God shall lead astray, thou shalt find no true path

mudhabdhabīna bayna dhālika lā ilā hāulāi walā ilā hāulāi waman yuḍ'lili l-lahu falan tajida lahu sabīla

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ مِن دُونِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۚ أَتُرِیدُونَ أَن تَجۡعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ عَلَیۡكُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰا مُّبِینًا ۝١٤٤

O true believers, take not the unbelievers for your protectors, besides the faithful. Will ye furnish God with an evident argument of impiety against you

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū l-kāfirīna awliyāa min dūni l-mu'minīna aturīdūna an tajʿalū lillahi ʿalaykum sul'ṭānan mubīna

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ فِی ٱلدَّرۡكِ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ وَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُمۡ نَصِیرًا ۝١٤٥

Moreover the hypocrites shall be in the lowest bottom of hell fire, and thou shalt not find any to help them thence

inna l-munāfiqīna fī l-darki l-asfali mina l-nāri walan tajida lahum naṣīra

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ تَابُوا۟ وَأَصۡلَحُوا۟ وَٱعۡتَصَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَأَخۡلَصُوا۟ دِینَهُمۡ لِلَّهِ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَعَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۖ وَسَوۡفَ یُؤۡتِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝١٤٦

But they who repent and amend, and adhere firmly unto God, and approve the sincerity of their religion to God, they shall be numbered with the faithful; and God will surely give the faithful a great reward

illā alladhīna tābū wa-aṣlaḥū wa-iʿ'taṣamū bil-lahi wa-akhlaṣū dīnahum lillahi fa-ulāika maʿa l-mu'minīna wasawfa yu'ti l-lahu l-mu'minīna ajran ʿaẓīma

مَّا یَفۡعَلُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابِكُمۡ إِن شَكَرۡتُمۡ وَءَامَنتُمۡۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ شَاكِرًا عَلِیمࣰا ۝١٤٧

And how should God go about to punisth you, if ye be thankful and believe? For God is grateful and wise

mā yafʿalu l-lahu biʿadhābikum in shakartum waāmantum wakāna l-lahu shākiran ʿalīma

۞ لَّا یُحِبُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡجَهۡرَ بِٱلسُّوۤءِ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ إِلَّا مَن ظُلِمَۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ سَمِیعًا عَلِیمًا ۝١٤٨

God loveth not the speaking ill of any one in public, unless he who is injured call for assistance; and God heareth and knoweth

lā yuḥibbu l-lahu l-jahra bil-sūi mina l-qawli illā man ẓulima wakāna l-lahu samīʿan ʿalīma

إِن تُبۡدُوا۟ خَیۡرًا أَوۡ تُخۡفُوهُ أَوۡ تَعۡفُوا۟ عَن سُوۤءࣲ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوࣰّا قَدِیرًا ۝١٤٩

Whether ye publish a good action, or conceal it, or forgive evil, verily God is gracious and powerful

in tub'dū khayran aw tukh'fūhu aw taʿfū ʿan sūin fa-inna l-laha kāna ʿafuwwan qadīra

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَكۡفُرُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَیُرِیدُونَ أَن یُفَرِّقُوا۟ بَیۡنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَیَقُولُونَ نُؤۡمِنُ بِبَعۡضࣲ وَنَكۡفُرُ بِبَعۡضࣲ وَیُرِیدُونَ أَن یَتَّخِذُوا۟ بَیۡنَ ذَ ٰلِكَ سَبِیلًا ۝١٥٠

They who believe not in God, and his apostles, and would make a distinction between God and his apostles, and say, we believe in some of the prophets and reject others of them, and seek to take a middle way in this matter

inna alladhīna yakfurūna bil-lahi warusulihi wayurīdūna an yufarriqū bayna l-lahi warusulihi wayaqūlūna nu'minu bibaʿḍin wanakfuru bibaʿḍin wayurīdūna an yattakhidhū bayna dhālika sabīla

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ حَقࣰّاۚ وَأَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابࣰا مُّهِینࣰا ۝١٥١

these are really unbelievers: And we have prepared for the unbelievers an ignominious punishment

ulāika humu l-kāfirūna ḥaqqan wa-aʿtadnā lil'kāfirīna ʿadhāban muhīna

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَلَمۡ یُفَرِّقُوا۟ بَیۡنَ أَحَدࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ سَوۡفَ یُؤۡتِیهِمۡ أُجُورَهُمۡۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝١٥٢

But they who believe in God and his apostles, and make no distinction between any of them, unto those will we surely give their reward; and God is gracious and merciful

wa-alladhīna āmanū bil-lahi warusulihi walam yufarriqū bayna aḥadin min'hum ulāika sawfa yu'tīhim ujūrahum wakāna l-lahu ghafūran raḥīma

22 The Transgressions of the Jews

یَسۡءَلُكَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أَن تُنَزِّلَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ كِتَـٰبࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِۚ فَقَدۡ سَأَلُوا۟ مُوسَىٰۤ أَكۡبَرَ مِن ذَ ٰلِكَ فَقَالُوۤا۟ أَرِنَا ٱللَّهَ جَهۡرَةࣰ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ بِظُلۡمِهِمۡۚ ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلۡعِجۡلَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَاۤءَتۡهُمُ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتُ فَعَفَوۡنَا عَن ذَ ٰلِكَۚ وَءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰا مُّبِینࣰا ۝١٥٣

They who have received the scriptures will demand of thee, that thou cause a book to descend unto them from heaven: They formerly asked of Moses a greater thing than this; for they said, shew us God visibly. Wherefore a storm of fire from heaven destroyed them, because of their iniquity. Then they took the calf for their God, after that evident proofs of the divine unity had come unto them: But we forgave them that, and gave Moses a manifest power to punish them

yasaluka ahlu l-kitābi an tunazzila ʿalayhim kitāban mina l-samāi faqad sa-alū mūsā akbara min dhālika faqālū arinā l-laha jahratan fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣāʿiqatu biẓul'mihim thumma ittakhadhū l-ʿij'la min baʿdi mā jāathumu l-bayinātu faʿafawnā ʿan dhālika waātaynā mūsā sul'ṭānan mubīna

وَرَفَعۡنَا فَوۡقَهُمُ ٱلطُّورَ بِمِیثَـٰقِهِمۡ وَقُلۡنَا لَهُمُ ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡبَابَ سُجَّدࣰا وَقُلۡنَا لَهُمۡ لَا تَعۡدُوا۟ فِی ٱلسَّبۡتِ وَأَخَذۡنَا مِنۡهُم مِّیثَـٰقًا غَلِیظࣰا ۝١٥٤

And we lifted the mountain of Sinai over them, when we exacted from them their covenant; and said unto them, enter the gate of the city worshipping. We also said unto them, transgress not on the sabbath day. And we received from them a firm covenant, that they would observe these things

warafaʿnā fawqahumu l-ṭūra bimīthāqihim waqul'nā lahumu ud'khulū l-bāba sujjadan waqul'nā lahum lā taʿdū fī l-sabti wa-akhadhnā min'hum mīthāqan ghalīẓa

فَبِمَا نَقۡضِهِم مِّیثَـٰقَهُمۡ وَكُفۡرِهِم بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَتۡلِهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۢبِیَاۤءَ بِغَیۡرِ حَقࣲّ وَقَوۡلِهِمۡ قُلُوبُنَا غُلۡفُۢۚ بَلۡ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهَا بِكُفۡرِهِمۡ فَلَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا ۝١٥٥

Therefore for that they have made void their covenant, and have not believed in the signs of God, and have slain the prophets unjustly, and have said, our hearts are uncircumcised; -- but God hath sealed them up, because of their unbelief; therefore they shall not believe, except a few of them:

fabimā naqḍihim mīthāqahum wakuf'rihim biāyāti l-lahi waqatlihimu l-anbiyāa bighayri ḥaqqin waqawlihim qulūbunā ghul'fun bal ṭabaʿa l-lahu ʿalayhā bikuf'rihim falā yu'minūna illā qalīla

وَبِكُفۡرِهِمۡ وَقَوۡلِهِمۡ عَلَىٰ مَرۡیَمَ بُهۡتَـٰنًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝١٥٦

And for that they have not believed on Jesus, and have spoken against Mary a grievous calumny

wabikuf'rihim waqawlihim ʿalā maryama buh'tānan ʿaẓīma

وَقَوۡلِهِمۡ إِنَّا قَتَلۡنَا ٱلۡمَسِیحَ عِیسَى ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَـٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ فِیهِ لَفِی شَكࣲّ مِّنۡهُۚ مَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍ إِلَّا ٱتِّبَاعَ ٱلظَّنِّۚ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ یَقِینَۢا ۝١٥٧

and have said, verily we have slain Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the apostle of God; yet they slew him not, neither crucified him, but he was represented by one in his likeness; and verily they who disagreed concerning him, were in a doubt as to this matter, and had no sure knowledge thereof, but followed only an uncertain opinion. They did not really kill him

waqawlihim innā qatalnā l-masīḥa ʿīsā ib'na maryama rasūla l-lahi wamā qatalūhu wamā ṣalabūhu walākin shubbiha lahum wa-inna alladhīna ikh'talafū fīhi lafī shakkin min'hu mā lahum bihi min ʿil'min illā ittibāʿa l-ẓani wamā qatalūhu yaqīna

بَل رَّفَعَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَیۡهِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَزِیزًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝١٥٨

but God took him up unto Himself: And God is mighty and wise

bal rafaʿahu l-lahu ilayhi wakāna l-lahu ʿazīzan ḥakīma

وَإِن مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِلَّا لَیُؤۡمِنَنَّ بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ مَوۡتِهِۦۖ وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یَكُونُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ شَهِیدࣰا ۝١٥٩

And there shall not be one of those who have received the scriptures, who shall not believe in him, before his death; and on the day of resurrection he shall be a witness against them

wa-in min ahli l-kitābi illā layu'minanna bihi qabla mawtihi wayawma l-qiyāmati yakūnu ʿalayhim shahīda

فَبِظُلۡمࣲ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِینَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ طَیِّبَـٰتٍ أُحِلَّتۡ لَهُمۡ وَبِصَدِّهِمۡ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ كَثِیرࣰا ۝١٦٠

Because of the iniquity of those who judaize, we have forbidden them good things, which had been formerly allowed them; and because they shut out many from the way of God

fabiẓul'min mina alladhīna hādū ḥarramnā ʿalayhim ṭayyibātin uḥillat lahum wabiṣaddihim ʿan sabīli l-lahi kathīra

وَأَخۡذِهِمُ ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟ وَقَدۡ نُهُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَأَكۡلِهِمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِۚ وَأَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ مِنۡهُمۡ عَذَابًا أَلِیمࣰا ۝١٦١

and have taken usury, which was forbidden them by the law, and devoured men's substance vainly: We have prepared for such of them as are unbelievers a painful punishment

wa-akhdhihimu l-riba waqad nuhū ʿanhu wa-aklihim amwāla l-nāsi bil-bāṭili wa-aʿtadnā lil'kāfirīna min'hum ʿadhāban alīma

لَّـٰكِنِ ٱلرَّ ٰسِخُونَ فِی ٱلۡعِلۡمِ مِنۡهُمۡ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِمَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكَ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَۚ وَٱلۡمُقِیمِینَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۚ وَٱلۡمُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ سَنُؤۡتِیهِمۡ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمًا ۝١٦٢

But those among them who are well grounded in knowledge, and the faithful, who believe in that which hath been sent down unto thee, and that which hath been sent down unto the prophets before thee, and who observe the stated times of prayer, and give alms, and believe in God and the last day; unto these will we give a great reward

lākini l-rāsikhūna fī l-ʿil'mi min'hum wal-mu'minūna yu'minūna bimā unzila ilayka wamā unzila min qablika wal-muqīmīna l-ṣalata wal-mu'tūna l-zakata wal-mu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri ulāika sanu'tīhim ajran ʿaẓīma

23 Previous Revelations Attest Qur'an

۞ إِنَّاۤ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ كَمَاۤ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ نُوحࣲ وَٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦۚ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَإِسۡمَـٰعِیلَ وَإِسۡحَـٰقَ وَیَعۡقُوبَ وَٱلۡأَسۡبَاطِ وَعِیسَىٰ وَأَیُّوبَ وَیُونُسَ وَهَـٰرُونَ وَسُلَیۡمَـٰنَۚ وَءَاتَیۡنَا دَاوُۥدَ زَبُورࣰا ۝١٦٣

Verily We have revealed our will unto thee, as We have revealed it unto Noah and the prophets who succeeded him; and as we revealed it unto Abraham, and Ismael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and unto Jesus, and Job, and Jonas, and Aaron, and Solomon; and We have given thee the Koran, as We gave the psalms unto David

innā awḥaynā ilayka kamā awḥaynā ilā nūḥin wal-nabiyīna min baʿdihi wa-awḥaynā ilā ib'rāhīma wa-is'māʿīla wa-is'ḥāqa wayaʿqūba wal-asbāṭi waʿīsā wa-ayyūba wayūnusa wahārūna wasulaymāna waātaynā dāwūda zabūra

وَرُسُلࣰا قَدۡ قَصَصۡنَـٰهُمۡ عَلَیۡكَ مِن قَبۡلُ وَرُسُلࣰا لَّمۡ نَقۡصُصۡهُمۡ عَلَیۡكَۚ وَكَلَّمَ ٱللَّهُ مُوسَىٰ تَكۡلِیمࣰا ۝١٦٤

Some apostles have We sent, whom We have formerly mentioned unto thee, and other apostles have We sent, whom We have not mentioned unto thee; and God spake unto Moses, discoursing with him

warusulan qad qaṣaṣnāhum ʿalayka min qablu warusulan lam naqṣuṣ'hum ʿalayka wakallama l-lahu mūsā taklīma

رُّسُلࣰا مُّبَشِّرِینَ وَمُنذِرِینَ لِئَلَّا یَكُونَ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ حُجَّةُۢ بَعۡدَ ٱلرُّسُلِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَزِیزًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝١٦٥

apostles declaring good tidings, and denouncing threats, lest men should have an argument of excuse against God, after the apostles had been sent unto them; God is mighty and wise

rusulan mubashirīna wamundhirīna li-allā yakūna lilnnāsi ʿalā l-lahi ḥujjatun baʿda l-rusuli wakāna l-lahu ʿazīzan ḥakīma

لَّـٰكِنِ ٱللَّهُ یَشۡهَدُ بِمَاۤ أَنزَلَ إِلَیۡكَۖ أَنزَلَهُۥ بِعِلۡمِهِۦۖ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ یَشۡهَدُونَۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِیدًا ۝١٦٦

God is witness of that revelation which He hath sent down unto thee; He sent it down with his special knowledge: The angels also are witnesses thereof; but God is a sufficient witness

lākini l-lahu yashhadu bimā anzala ilayka anzalahu biʿil'mihi wal-malāikatu yashhadūna wakafā bil-lahi shahīda

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ قَدۡ ضَلُّوا۟ ضَلَـٰلَۢا بَعِیدًا ۝١٦٧

They who believe not, and turn aside others from the way of God, have erred in a wide mistake

inna alladhīna kafarū waṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi qad ḍallū ḍalālan baʿīda

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَظَلَمُوا۟ لَمۡ یَكُنِ ٱللَّهُ لِیَغۡفِرَ لَهُمۡ وَلَا لِیَهۡدِیَهُمۡ طَرِیقًا ۝١٦٨

Verily those who believe not, and act unjustly, God will by no means forgive, neither will He direct them into any other way

inna alladhīna kafarū waẓalamū lam yakuni l-lahu liyaghfira lahum walā liyahdiyahum ṭarīqa

إِلَّا طَرِیقَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدࣰاۚ وَكَانَ ذَ ٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ یَسِیرࣰا ۝١٦٩

than the way of hell; they shall remain therein for ever: And this is easy with God

illā ṭarīqa jahannama khālidīna fīhā abadan wakāna dhālika ʿalā l-lahi yasīra

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ بِٱلۡحَقِّ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡ فَءَامِنُوا۟ خَیۡرࣰا لَّكُمۡۚ وَإِن تَكۡفُرُوا۟ فَإِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمࣰا ۝١٧٠

O men, now is the apostle come unto you, with truth from your Lord; believe therefore, it will be better for you. But if ye disbelieve, verily unto God belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth; and God is knowing and wise

yāayyuhā l-nāsu qad jāakumu l-rasūlu bil-ḥaqi min rabbikum faāminū khayran lakum wa-in takfurū fa-inna lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wakāna l-lahu ʿalīman ḥakīma

یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَا تَغۡلُوا۟ فِی دِینِكُمۡ وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَقَّۚ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡمَسِیحُ عِیسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُۥۤ أَلۡقَىٰهَاۤ إِلَىٰ مَرۡیَمَ وَرُوحࣱ مِّنۡهُۖ فَءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦۖ وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ ثَلَـٰثَةٌۚ ٱنتَهُوا۟ خَیۡرࣰا لَّكُمۡۚ إِنَّمَا ٱللَّهُ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱۖ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥۤ أَن یَكُونَ لَهُۥ وَلَدࣱۘ لَّهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَكِیلࣰا ۝١٧١

O ye who have received the scriptures, exceed not the just bounds in your religion, neither say of God any other than the truth. Verily Christ Jesus the son of Mary is the apostle of God, and his word, which he conveyed into Mary, and a spirit proceeding from him. Believe therefore in God, and his apostles, and say not, there are three Gods; forbear this; it will be better for you. God is but one God. Far be it from Him that He should have a son! Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth; and God is a sufficient protector

yāahla l-kitābi lā taghlū fī dīnikum walā taqūlū ʿalā l-lahi illā l-ḥaqa innamā l-masīḥu ʿīsā ub'nu maryama rasūlu l-lahi wakalimatuhu alqāhā ilā maryama warūḥun min'hu faāminū bil-lahi warusulihi walā taqūlū thalāthatun intahū khayran lakum innamā l-lahu ilāhun wāḥidun sub'ḥānahu an yakūna lahu waladun lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wakafā bil-lahi wakīla

24 Prophethood of Jesus

لَّن یَسۡتَنكِفَ ٱلۡمَسِیحُ أَن یَكُونَ عَبۡدࣰا لِّلَّهِ وَلَا ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَۚ وَمَن یَسۡتَنكِفۡ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِهِۦ وَیَسۡتَكۡبِرۡ فَسَیَحۡشُرُهُمۡ إِلَیۡهِ جَمِیعࣰا ۝١٧٢

Christ doth not proudly disdain to be a servant unto God; neither the angles who approach near to his presence: And whoso disdaineth his service, and is puffed up with pride, God will gather them all to Himself, on the last day

lan yastankifa l-masīḥu an yakūna ʿabdan lillahi walā l-malāikatu l-muqarabūna waman yastankif ʿan ʿibādatihi wayastakbir fasayaḥshuruhum ilayhi jamīʿa

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَیُوَفِّیهِمۡ أُجُورَهُمۡ وَیَزِیدُهُم مِّن فَضۡلِهِۦۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَنكَفُوا۟ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ فَیُعَذِّبُهُمۡ عَذَابًا أَلِیمࣰا وَلَا یَجِدُونَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِیࣰّا وَلَا نَصِیرࣰا ۝١٧٣

Unto those who believe, and do that which is right, He shall give their rewards, and shall superabundantly add unto them of his liberality: But those who are disdainful and proud, He will punish with a grievous punishment; and they shall not find any to protect or to help them, besides God

fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti fayuwaffīhim ujūrahum wayazīduhum min faḍlihi wa-ammā alladhīna is'tankafū wa-is'takbarū fayuʿadhibuhum ʿadhāban alīman walā yajidūna lahum min dūni l-lahi waliyyan walā naṣīra

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُم بُرۡهَـٰنࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَأَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكُمۡ نُورࣰا مُّبِینࣰا ۝١٧٤

O men, now is an evident proof come unto you from your Lord, and We have sent down unto you manifest light

yāayyuhā l-nāsu qad jāakum bur'hānun min rabbikum wa-anzalnā ilaykum nūran mubīna

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱعۡتَصَمُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَسَیُدۡخِلُهُمۡ فِی رَحۡمَةࣲ مِّنۡهُ وَفَضۡلࣲ وَیَهۡدِیهِمۡ إِلَیۡهِ صِرَ ٰطࣰا مُّسۡتَقِیمࣰا ۝١٧٥

They who believe in God and firmly adhere to him, He will lead them into mercy from him, and abundance; and He will direct them in the right way to himself

fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū bil-lahi wa-iʿ'taṣamū bihi fasayud'khiluhum fī raḥmatin min'hu wafaḍlin wayahdīhim ilayhi ṣirāṭan mus'taqīma

یَسۡتَفۡتُونَكَ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یُفۡتِیكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡكَلَـٰلَةِۚ إِنِ ٱمۡرُؤٌا۟ هَلَكَ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ وَلَدࣱ وَلَهُۥۤ أُخۡتࣱ فَلَهَا نِصۡفُ مَا تَرَكَۚ وَهُوَ یَرِثُهَاۤ إِن لَّمۡ یَكُن لَّهَا وَلَدࣱۚ فَإِن كَانَتَا ٱثۡنَتَیۡنِ فَلَهُمَا ٱلثُّلُثَانِ مِمَّا تَرَكَۚ وَإِن كَانُوۤا۟ إِخۡوَةࣰ رِّجَالࣰا وَنِسَاۤءࣰ فَلِلذَّكَرِ مِثۡلُ حَظِّ ٱلۡأُنثَیَیۡنِۗ یُبَیِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ أَن تَضِلُّوا۟ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمُۢ ۝١٧٦

They will consult thee for thy decision in certain cases; say unto them, God giveth you these determinations, concerning the more remote degrees of kindred. If a man die without issue, and have a sister; she shall have the half of what he shall leave: And he shall be heir to her, in case she have no issue. But if there be two sisters, they shall have between them two third parts of what he shall leave; and of there be several, both brothers and sisters, a male shall have as much as the portion of two females. God declareth unto you these precepts, lest ye err: And God knoweth all things

yastaftūnaka quli l-lahu yuf'tīkum fī l-kalālati ini im'ru-on halaka laysa lahu waladun walahu ukh'tun falahā niṣ'fu mā taraka wahuwa yarithuhā in lam yakun lahā waladun fa-in kānatā ith'natayni falahumā l-thuluthāni mimmā taraka wa-in kānū ikh'watan rijālan wanisāan falildhakari mith'lu ḥaẓẓi l-unthayayni yubayyinu l-lahu lakum an taḍillū wal-lahu bikulli shayin ʿalīmu
