1 Protection of the Faithful

The Study Quran

تَنزِیلُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡعَلِیمِ ۝٢

The Study Quran

The revelation of the Book from God, the Mighty, the Knower

tanzīlu l-kitābi mina l-lahi l-ʿazīzi l-ʿalīm

غَافِرِ ٱلذَّنۢبِ وَقَابِلِ ٱلتَّوۡبِ شَدِیدِ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ذِی ٱلطَّوۡلِۖ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ إِلَیۡهِ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝٣

The Study Quran

Forgiver of sins, Accepter of Repentance, severe in retribution, Possessed of Bounty. There is no god but He; unto Him is the journey’s end

ghāfiri l-dhanbi waqābili l-tawbi shadīdi l-ʿiqābi dhī l-ṭawli lā ilāha illā huwa ilayhi l-maṣīr

مَا یُجَـٰدِلُ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَلَا یَغۡرُرۡكَ تَقَلُّبُهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ ۝٤

The Study Quran

None but those who disbelieve dispute concerning the signs of God. So let it not delude thee that they are free to come and go in the land

mā yujādilu fī āyāti l-lahi illā alladhīna kafarū falā yaghrur'ka taqallubuhum fī l-bilād

كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحࣲ وَٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۖ وَهَمَّتۡ كُلُّ أُمَّةِۭ بِرَسُولِهِمۡ لِیَأۡخُذُوهُۖ وَجَـٰدَلُوا۟ بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ لِیُدۡحِضُوا۟ بِهِ ٱلۡحَقَّ فَأَخَذۡتُهُمۡۖ فَكَیۡفَ كَانَ عِقَابِ ۝٥

The Study Quran

The people of Noah denied before them, as did the parties after them. And every community contrived against its messenger, to take him. They disputed by means of falsehood in order to refute the truth thereby; so I seized them. How, then, was My Retribution

kadhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin wal-aḥzābu min baʿdihim wahammat kullu ummatin birasūlihim liyakhudhūhu wajādalū bil-bāṭili liyud'ḥiḍū bihi l-ḥaqa fa-akhadhtuhum fakayfa kāna ʿiqāb

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ حَقَّتۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۝٦

The Study Quran

Likewise did the Word of thy Lord come due for those who disbelieve, that they are the inhabitants of the Fire

wakadhālika ḥaqqat kalimatu rabbika ʿalā alladhīna kafarū annahum aṣḥābu l-nār

ٱلَّذِینَ یَحۡمِلُونَ ٱلۡعَرۡشَ وَمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥ یُسَبِّحُونَ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَیُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَیَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ۖ رَبَّنَا وَسِعۡتَ كُلَّ شَیۡءࣲ رَّحۡمَةࣰ وَعِلۡمࣰا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لِلَّذِینَ تَابُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ سَبِیلَكَ وَقِهِمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٧

The Study Quran

Those who bear the Throne and those who dwell nigh unto it hymn the praise of their Lord and believe in Him and seek forgiveness for those who believe: “Our Lord, Thou dost encompass all things in Mercy and Knowledge. Forgive those who repent and follow Thy way, and shield them from the punishment of Hellfire

alladhīna yaḥmilūna l-ʿarsha waman ḥawlahu yusabbiḥūna biḥamdi rabbihim wayu'minūna bihi wayastaghfirūna lilladhīna āmanū rabbanā wasiʿ'ta kulla shayin raḥmatan waʿil'man fa-igh'fir lilladhīna tābū wa-ittabaʿū sabīlaka waqihim ʿadhāba l-jaḥīm

رَبَّنَا وَأَدۡخِلۡهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتِ عَدۡنٍ ٱلَّتِی وَعَدتَّهُمۡ وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنۡ ءَابَاۤىِٕهِمۡ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجِهِمۡ وَذُرِّیَّـٰتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٨

The Study Quran

Our Lord, make them enter Gardens of Eden that Thou hast promised them and those among their fathers, their spouses, and their progeny who were righteous. Truly Thou art the Mighty, the Wise

rabbanā wa-adkhil'hum jannāti ʿadnin allatī waʿadttahum waman ṣalaḥa min ābāihim wa-azwājihim wadhurriyyātihim innaka anta l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

وَقِهِمُ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِۚ وَمَن تَقِ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فَقَدۡ رَحِمۡتَهُۥۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٩

The Study Quran

And protect them from evil deeds. Whosoever Thou shieldest from evil deeds on that Day, upon him hast Thou had mercy. And that indeed is the great triumph.

waqihimu l-sayiāti waman taqi l-sayiāti yawma-idhin faqad raḥim'tahu wadhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

2 Failure of Opponents

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یُنَادَوۡنَ لَمَقۡتُ ٱللَّهِ أَكۡبَرُ مِن مَّقۡتِكُمۡ أَنفُسَكُمۡ إِذۡ تُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلۡإِیمَـٰنِ فَتَكۡفُرُونَ ۝١٠

The Study Quran

Truly those who disbelieve shall be addressed: “God’s odium is greater than your odium for yourselves when you were called to belief, but then disbelieved.

inna alladhīna kafarū yunādawna lamaqtu l-lahi akbaru min maqtikum anfusakum idh tud'ʿawna ilā l-īmāni fatakfurūn

قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَاۤ أَمَتَّنَا ٱثۡنَتَیۡنِ وَأَحۡیَیۡتَنَا ٱثۡنَتَیۡنِ فَٱعۡتَرَفۡنَا بِذُنُوبِنَا فَهَلۡ إِلَىٰ خُرُوجࣲ مِّن سَبِیلࣲ ۝١١

The Study Quran

They will say, “Our Lord, Thou hast caused us to die twice over, and given us life twice over; so we admit our sins. Is there any way out?

qālū rabbanā amattanā ith'natayni wa-aḥyaytanā ith'natayni fa-iʿ'tarafnā bidhunūbinā fahal ilā khurūjin min sabīli

ذَ ٰلِكُم بِأَنَّهُۥۤ إِذَا دُعِیَ ٱللَّهُ وَحۡدَهُۥ كَفَرۡتُمۡ وَإِن یُشۡرَكۡ بِهِۦ تُؤۡمِنُوا۟ۚ فَٱلۡحُكۡمُ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡعَلِیِّ ٱلۡكَبِیرِ ۝١٢

The Study Quran

That is because when God was invoked as One, you disbelieved, and when partners were ascribed unto Him, you believed. Judgment lies with God, the Exalted, the Great

dhālikum bi-annahu idhā duʿiya l-lahu waḥdahu kafartum wa-in yush'rak bihi tu'minū fal-ḥuk'mu lillahi l-ʿaliyi l-kabīr

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُرِیكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ وَیُنَزِّلُ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ رِزۡقࣰاۚ وَمَا یَتَذَكَّرُ إِلَّا مَن یُنِیبُ ۝١٣

The Study Quran

He it is Who shows you His signs and sends down provision for you from Heaven. And none reflect, save those who turn in repentance

huwa alladhī yurīkum āyātihi wayunazzilu lakum mina l-samāi riz'qan wamā yatadhakkaru illā man yunīb

فَٱدۡعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝١٤

The Study Quran

So call upon God, devoting religion entirely to Him, though the disbelievers be averse

fa-id'ʿū l-laha mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna walaw kariha l-kāfirūn

رَفِیعُ ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتِ ذُو ٱلۡعَرۡشِ یُلۡقِی ٱلرُّوحَ مِنۡ أَمۡرِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ لِیُنذِرَ یَوۡمَ ٱلتَّلَاقِ ۝١٥

The Study Quran

The Raiser of degrees, the Possessor of the Throne, He casts the Spirit from His Command upon whomsoever He will among His servants to warn of the Day of the Meeting

rafīʿu l-darajāti dhū l-ʿarshi yul'qī l-rūḥa min amrihi ʿalā man yashāu min ʿibādihi liyundhira yawma l-talāq

یَوۡمَ هُم بَـٰرِزُونَۖ لَا یَخۡفَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مِنۡهُمۡ شَیۡءࣱۚ لِّمَنِ ٱلۡمُلۡكُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَۖ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡوَ ٰحِدِ ٱلۡقَهَّارِ ۝١٦

The Study Quran

the Day when they come forth with naught concerning them hidden from God. Whose is the sovereignty this Day? It is God’s, the One, the Paramount

yawma hum bārizūna lā yakhfā ʿalā l-lahi min'hum shayon limani l-mul'ku l-yawma lillahi l-wāḥidi l-qahār

ٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُجۡزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡۚ لَا ظُلۡمَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِیعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ۝١٧

The Study Quran

On that Day every soul shall be recompensed for that which it has earned. No wrong will be done that Day. Truly God is swift in reckoning

al-yawma tuj'zā kullu nafsin bimā kasabat lā ẓul'ma l-yawma inna l-laha sarīʿu l-ḥisāb

وَأَنذِرۡهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡءَازِفَةِ إِذِ ٱلۡقُلُوبُ لَدَى ٱلۡحَنَاجِرِ كَـٰظِمِینَۚ مَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِینَ مِنۡ حَمِیمࣲ وَلَا شَفِیعࣲ یُطَاعُ ۝١٨

The Study Quran

So warn them of the Day of the Imminent Event, when hearts will be in throats, choking in agony. The wrongdoers shall have no loyal friend, nor any intercessor to be obeyed

wa-andhir'hum yawma l-āzifati idhi l-qulūbu ladā l-ḥanājiri kāẓimīna mā lilẓẓālimīna min ḥamīmin walā shafīʿin yuṭāʿ

یَعۡلَمُ خَاۤىِٕنَةَ ٱلۡأَعۡیُنِ وَمَا تُخۡفِی ٱلصُّدُورُ ۝١٩

The Study Quran

He knows the treachery of eyes and that which breasts conceal

yaʿlamu khāinata l-aʿyuni wamā tukh'fī l-ṣudūr

وَٱللَّهُ یَقۡضِی بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ وَٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا یَقۡضُونَ بِشَیۡءٍۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡبَصِیرُ ۝٢٠

The Study Quran

God decrees with truth, and those upon whom they call apart from Him do not decree by means of aught. Truly God is the Hearer, the Seer

wal-lahu yaqḍī bil-ḥaqi wa-alladhīna yadʿūna min dūnihi lā yaqḍūna bishayin inna l-laha huwa l-samīʿu l-baṣīr

3 A Warning in Moses' History

۞ أَوَ لَمۡ یَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَیَنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَانُوا۟ هُمۡ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةࣰ وَءَاثَارࣰا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقࣲ ۝٢١

The Study Quran

Have they not journeyed upon the earth and observed how those before them fared in the end? They were greater than them in strength and left firmer traces upon the earth; yet God seized them for their sins, and they had none to shield them from God

awalam yasīrū fī l-arḍi fayanẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu alladhīna kānū min qablihim kānū hum ashadda min'hum quwwatan waāthāran fī l-arḍi fa-akhadhahumu l-lahu bidhunūbihim wamā kāna lahum mina l-lahi min wāqi

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَانَت تَّأۡتِیهِمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَكَفَرُوا۟ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ قَوِیࣱّ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝٢٢

The Study Quran

That is because their messengers brought them clear proofs, yet they disbelieved; so God seized them. Truly He is Strong, severe in retribution

dhālika bi-annahum kānat tatīhim rusuluhum bil-bayināti fakafarū fa-akhadhahumu l-lahu innahu qawiyyun shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَسُلۡطَـٰنࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٢٣

The Study Quran

And indeed We sent Moses with Our signs and a manifest authorit

walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā wasul'ṭānin mubīni

إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَ وَقَـٰرُونَ فَقَالُوا۟ سَـٰحِرࣱ كَذَّابࣱ ۝٢٤

The Study Quran

unto Pharaoh, Haman, and Korah. And they said, “A lying sorcerer.

ilā fir'ʿawna wahāmāna waqārūna faqālū sāḥirun kadhābu

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ مِنۡ عِندِنَا قَالُوا۟ ٱقۡتُلُوۤا۟ أَبۡنَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ وَٱسۡتَحۡیُوا۟ نِسَاۤءَهُمۡۚ وَمَا كَیۡدُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ إِلَّا فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ ۝٢٥

The Study Quran

So when he came unto them with the truth from Us, they said, “Slay the sons of those who believe with him and spare their women.” The scheming of the disbelievers is naught but astray

falammā jāahum bil-ḥaqi min ʿindinā qālū uq'tulū abnāa alladhīna āmanū maʿahu wa-is'taḥyū nisāahum wamā kaydu l-kāfirīna illā fī ḍalāli

وَقَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ذَرُونِیۤ أَقۡتُلۡ مُوسَىٰ وَلۡیَدۡعُ رَبَّهُۥۤۖ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُبَدِّلَ دِینَكُمۡ أَوۡ أَن یُظۡهِرَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ٱلۡفَسَادَ ۝٢٦

The Study Quran

And Pharaoh said, “Leave me to kill Moses, and let him call upon his Lord. Truly I fear that he will alter your religion or that he will cause corruption to appear in the land.

waqāla fir'ʿawnu dharūnī aqtul mūsā walyadʿu rabbahu innī akhāfu an yubaddila dīnakum aw an yuẓ'hira fī l-arḍi l-fasād

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنِّی عُذۡتُ بِرَبِّی وَرَبِّكُم مِّن كُلِّ مُتَكَبِّرࣲ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ۝٢٧

The Study Quran

And Moses said, “Truly I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from everyone who is arrogant and believes not in the Day of Reckoning.

waqāla mūsā innī ʿudh'tu birabbī warabbikum min kulli mutakabbirin lā yu'minu biyawmi l-ḥisāb

4 A Believer of Pharaoh's People

وَقَالَ رَجُلࣱ مُّؤۡمِنࣱ مِّنۡ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ یَكۡتُمُ إِیمَـٰنَهُۥۤ أَتَقۡتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَن یَقُولَ رَبِّیَ ٱللَّهُ وَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ وَإِن یَكُ كَـٰذِبࣰا فَعَلَیۡهِ كَذِبُهُۥۖ وَإِن یَكُ صَادِقࣰا یُصِبۡكُم بَعۡضُ ٱلَّذِی یَعِدُكُمۡۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی مَنۡ هُوَ مُسۡرِفࣱ كَذَّابࣱ ۝٢٨

The Study Quran

And a believing man from the House of Pharaoh who was concealing his belief said, “Will you kill a man for saying, ‘My Lord is God,’ though he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? If he is a liar, then his lying is to his own detriment. But if he is truthful, some of that which he promises you will befall you. Truly God guides not one who is a prodigal liar

waqāla rajulun mu'minun min āli fir'ʿawna yaktumu īmānahu ataqtulūna rajulan an yaqūla rabbiya l-lahu waqad jāakum bil-bayināti min rabbikum wa-in yaku kādhiban faʿalayhi kadhibuhu wa-in yaku ṣādiqan yuṣib'kum baʿḍu alladhī yaʿidukum inna l-laha lā yahdī man huwa mus'rifun kadhābu

یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَكُمُ ٱلۡمُلۡكُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ ظَـٰهِرِینَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَمَن یَنصُرُنَا مِنۢ بَأۡسِ ٱللَّهِ إِن جَاۤءَنَاۚ قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ مَاۤ أُرِیكُمۡ إِلَّا مَاۤ أَرَىٰ وَمَاۤ أَهۡدِیكُمۡ إِلَّا سَبِیلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ۝٢٩

The Study Quran

O my people! Sovereignty is yours this day, while you prevail over the land. But who will help us against God’s Might should it come upon us?” Pharaoh said, “I show you naught but what I see, and I guide you unto naught but the way of rectitude.

yāqawmi lakumu l-mul'ku l-yawma ẓāhirīna fī l-arḍi faman yanṣurunā min basi l-lahi in jāanā qāla fir'ʿawnu mā urīkum illā mā arā wamā ahdīkum illā sabīla l-rashād

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِیۤ ءَامَنَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُم مِّثۡلَ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ ۝٣٠

The Study Quran

And he who believed said, “O my people! Truly I fear for you [a day] like the day of the parties [of old]

waqāla alladhī āmana yāqawmi innī akhāfu ʿalaykum mith'la yawmi l-aḥzāb

مِثۡلَ دَأۡبِ قَوۡمِ نُوحࣲ وَعَادࣲ وَثَمُودَ وَٱلَّذِینَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۚ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ یُرِیدُ ظُلۡمࣰا لِّلۡعِبَادِ ۝٣١

The Study Quran

like the plight of the people of Noah, ?Ad, and Thamud, and those after them. Yet God does not desire wrong for His servants

mith'la dabi qawmi nūḥin waʿādin wathamūda wa-alladhīna min baʿdihim wamā l-lahu yurīdu ẓul'man lil'ʿibād

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلتَّنَادِ ۝٣٢

The Study Quran

O my people! Truly I fear for you the Day of Mutual Calling

wayāqawmi innī akhāfu ʿalaykum yawma l-tanād

یَوۡمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدۡبِرِینَ مَا لَكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنۡ عَاصِمࣲۗ وَمَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنۡ هَادࣲ ۝٣٣

The Study Quran

the Day you will turn away to flee, having none to protect you from God. And whomsoever God leads astray, no guide has he

yawma tuwallūna mud'birīna mā lakum mina l-lahi min ʿāṣimin waman yuḍ'lili l-lahu famā lahu min hādi

وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمۡ یُوسُفُ مِن قَبۡلُ بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا زِلۡتُمۡ فِی شَكࣲّ مِّمَّا جَاۤءَكُم بِهِۦۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا هَلَكَ قُلۡتُمۡ لَن یَبۡعَثَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ رَسُولࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَنۡ هُوَ مُسۡرِفࣱ مُّرۡتَابٌ ۝٣٤

The Study Quran

And Joseph brought you clear proofs before; yet still you were in doubt regarding that which he brought unto you, so much so that when he perished, you said, ‘God will not send a messenger after him.’ Thus does God lead astray whosoever is a prodigal doubter

walaqad jāakum yūsufu min qablu bil-bayināti famā zil'tum fī shakkin mimmā jāakum bihi ḥattā idhā halaka qul'tum lan yabʿatha l-lahu min baʿdihi rasūlan kadhālika yuḍillu l-lahu man huwa mus'rifun mur'tābu

ٱلَّذِینَ یُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَیۡرِ سُلۡطَـٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمۡۖ كَبُرَ مَقۡتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَطۡبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ قَلۡبِ مُتَكَبِّرࣲ جَبَّارࣲ ۝٣٥

The Study Quran

those who dispute concerning God’s signs without any authority having come to them, grievously odious is it in the sight of God and in the sight of those who believe. Thus does God put a seal upon the heart of every arrogant tyrant.

alladhīna yujādilūna fī āyāti l-lahi bighayri sul'ṭānin atāhum kabura maqtan ʿinda l-lahi waʿinda alladhīna āmanū kadhālika yaṭbaʿu l-lahu ʿalā kulli qalbi mutakabbirin jabbāri

وَقَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ یَـٰهَـٰمَـٰنُ ٱبۡنِ لِی صَرۡحࣰا لَّعَلِّیۤ أَبۡلُغُ ٱلۡأَسۡبَـٰبَ ۝٣٦

The Study Quran

And Pharaoh said, “O Haman! Build for me a tower, that perhaps I may attain the means

waqāla fir'ʿawnu yāhāmānu ib'ni lī ṣarḥan laʿallī ablughu l-asbāb

أَسۡبَـٰبَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ فَأَطَّلِعَ إِلَىٰۤ إِلَـٰهِ مُوسَىٰ وَإِنِّی لَأَظُنُّهُۥ كَـٰذِبࣰاۚ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ زُیِّنَ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ سُوۤءُ عَمَلِهِۦ وَصُدَّ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِۚ وَمَا كَیۡدُ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِلَّا فِی تَبَابࣲ ۝٣٧

The Study Quran

the means to reach the heavens—that I may look upon the God of Moses. Truly I deem him a liar.” Thus was the evil of his conduct made to seem fair unto Pharaoh, and he was turned from the way. Pharaoh’s scheming led to naught but ruin

asbāba l-samāwāti fa-aṭṭaliʿa ilā ilāhi mūsā wa-innī la-aẓunnuhu kādhiban wakadhālika zuyyina lifir'ʿawna sūu ʿamalihi waṣudda ʿani l-sabīli wamā kaydu fir'ʿawna illā fī tabābi

5 End of Pharaoh

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِیۤ ءَامَنَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱتَّبِعُونِ أَهۡدِكُمۡ سَبِیلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ۝٣٨

The Study Quran

And he who believed said, “O my people! Follow me; I shall guide you unto the way of rectitude

waqāla alladhī āmana yāqawmi ittabiʿūni ahdikum sabīla l-rashād

یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا مَتَـٰعࣱ وَإِنَّ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ هِیَ دَارُ ٱلۡقَرَارِ ۝٣٩

The Study Quran

O my people! The life of this world is but fleeting enjoyment, whereas the Hereafter is truly the Abode of Permanence

yāqawmi innamā hādhihi l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā matāʿun wa-inna l-ākhirata hiya dāru l-qarār

مَنۡ عَمِلَ سَیِّئَةࣰ فَلَا یُجۡزَىٰۤ إِلَّا مِثۡلَهَاۖ وَمَنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنࣱ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یَدۡخُلُونَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ یُرۡزَقُونَ فِیهَا بِغَیۡرِ حِسَابࣲ ۝٤٠

The Study Quran

Whosoever commits an evil deed will not be requited, save with the like thereof; but whosoever, whether male or female, performs a righteous deed and is a believer shall enter the Garden wherein they will be provided for without reckoning.

man ʿamila sayyi-atan falā yuj'zā illā mith'lahā waman ʿamila ṣāliḥan min dhakarin aw unthā wahuwa mu'minun fa-ulāika yadkhulūna l-janata yur'zaqūna fīhā bighayri ḥisābi

۞ وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ مَا لِیۤ أَدۡعُوكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلنَّجَوٰةِ وَتَدۡعُونَنِیۤ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ ۝٤١

The Study Quran

my people! How is it that I call you unto salvation while you call me unto the Fire

wayāqawmi mā lī adʿūkum ilā l-najati watadʿūnanī ilā l-nār

تَدۡعُونَنِی لِأَكۡفُرَ بِٱللَّهِ وَأُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦ مَا لَیۡسَ لِی بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱ وَأَنَا۠ أَدۡعُوكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡغَفَّـٰرِ ۝٤٢

The Study Quran

You call upon me to disbelieve in God and to ascribe as a partner unto Him that whereof I have no knowledge, whereas I call you unto the Mighty, the Forgiving

tadʿūnanī li-akfura bil-lahi wa-ush'rika bihi mā laysa lī bihi ʿil'mun wa-anā adʿūkum ilā l-ʿazīzi l-ghafār

لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّمَا تَدۡعُونَنِیۤ إِلَیۡهِ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ دَعۡوَةࣱ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَلَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ مَرَدَّنَاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۝٤٣

The Study Quran

There is no doubt that that unto which you call me has no call in this world or in the Hereafter, and that our return will be unto God, and that the prodigal are the inhabitants of the Fire

lā jarama annamā tadʿūnanī ilayhi laysa lahu daʿwatun fī l-dun'yā walā fī l-ākhirati wa-anna maraddanā ilā l-lahi wa-anna l-mus'rifīna hum aṣḥābu l-nār

فَسَتَذۡكُرُونَ مَاۤ أَقُولُ لَكُمۡۚ وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمۡرِیۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَصِیرُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ ۝٤٤

The Study Quran

You will soon remember what I have said to you. I entrust my affair to God. Truly God sees His servants.

fasatadhkurūna mā aqūlu lakum wa-ufawwiḍu amrī ilā l-lahi inna l-laha baṣīrun bil-ʿibād

فَوَقَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ سَیِّءَاتِ مَا مَكَرُوا۟ۖ وَحَاقَ بِءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ سُوۤءُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ۝٤٥

The Study Quran

So God shielded him from the evils of that which they had plotted, while a terrible punishment beset the House of Pharaoh

fawaqāhu l-lahu sayyiāti mā makarū waḥāqa biāli fir'ʿawna sūu l-ʿadhāb

ٱلنَّارُ یُعۡرَضُونَ عَلَیۡهَا غُدُوࣰّا وَعَشِیࣰّاۚ وَیَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدۡخِلُوۤا۟ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ أَشَدَّ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ۝٤٦

The Study Quran

the Fire, to which they are exposed morning and evening. And on the Day when the Hour is come, [it will be said], “Cause the House of Pharaoh to enter the punishment most severe!

al-nāru yuʿ'raḍūna ʿalayhā ghuduwwan waʿashiyyan wayawma taqūmu l-sāʿatu adkhilū āla fir'ʿawna ashadda l-ʿadhāb

وَإِذۡ یَتَحَاۤجُّونَ فِی ٱلنَّارِ فَیَقُولُ ٱلضُّعَفَـٰۤؤُا۟ لِلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوۤا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمۡ تَبَعࣰا فَهَلۡ أَنتُم مُّغۡنُونَ عَنَّا نَصِیبࣰا مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ ۝٤٧

The Study Quran

And when they are arguing with one another in the Fire, the weak will say to those who waxed arrogant, “Truly we were your followers; so can you avail us against any portion of the Fire?

wa-idh yataḥājjūna fī l-nāri fayaqūlu l-ḍuʿafāu lilladhīna is'takbarū innā kunnā lakum tabaʿan fahal antum mugh'nūna ʿannā naṣīban mina l-nār

قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوۤا۟ إِنَّا كُلࣱّ فِیهَاۤ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَدۡ حَكَمَ بَیۡنَ ٱلۡعِبَادِ ۝٤٨

The Study Quran

Those who waxed arrogant will say, “Truly we are all in it. God has indeed judged between His servants.

qāla alladhīna is'takbarū innā kullun fīhā inna l-laha qad ḥakama bayna l-ʿibād

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی ٱلنَّارِ لِخَزَنَةِ جَهَنَّمَ ٱدۡعُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡ یُخَفِّفۡ عَنَّا یَوۡمࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ۝٤٩

The Study Quran

And those who are in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, “Call upon your Lord to relieve us from a day of the punishment.

waqāla alladhīna fī l-nāri likhazanati jahannama id'ʿū rabbakum yukhaffif ʿannā yawman mina l-ʿadhāb

قَالُوۤا۟ أَوَ لَمۡ تَكُ تَأۡتِیكُمۡ رُسُلُكُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰۚ قَالُوا۟ فَٱدۡعُوا۟ۗ وَمَا دُعَـٰۤؤُا۟ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ إِلَّا فِی ضَلَـٰلٍ ۝٥٠

The Study Quran

They will reply, “Did not your messengers bring you clear proofs?” They will say, “Yea, indeed.” They will say, “Then make supplications!” But the supplication of the disbelievers is naught but astray

qālū awalam taku tatīkum rusulukum bil-bayināti qālū balā qālū fa-id'ʿū wamā duʿāu l-kāfirīna illā fī ḍalāli

6 Messengers Receive Divine Help

إِنَّا لَنَنصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَیَوۡمَ یَقُومُ ٱلۡأَشۡهَـٰدُ ۝٥١

The Study Quran

Truly We shall help Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses arise

innā lananṣuru rusulanā wa-alladhīna āmanū fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wayawma yaqūmu l-ashhād

یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ مَعۡذِرَتُهُمۡۖ وَلَهُمُ ٱللَّعۡنَةُ وَلَهُمۡ سُوۤءُ ٱلدَّارِ ۝٥٢

The Study Quran

the Day when the excuses of the wrongdoers will not benefit them, and theirs will be the curse, and theirs will be the evil abode

yawma lā yanfaʿu l-ẓālimīna maʿdhiratuhum walahumu l-laʿnatu walahum sūu l-dār

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ۝٥٣

The Study Quran

And indeed We gave Moses guidance, and We bequeathed the Book unto the Children of Israel

walaqad ātaynā mūsā l-hudā wa-awrathnā banī is'rāīla l-kitāb

هُدࣰى وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝٥٤

The Study Quran

as a guidance, and as a reminder for possessors of intellect

hudan wadhik'rā li-ulī l-albāb

فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلۡعَشِیِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡكَـٰرِ ۝٥٥

The Study Quran

So be patient. Surely God’s Promise is true. And ask forgiveness for thy sin, and hymn the praise of thy Lord at eventide and at dawn

fa-iṣ'bir inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun wa-is'taghfir lidhanbika wasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika bil-ʿashiyi wal-ib'kār

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَیۡرِ سُلۡطَـٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمۡ إِن فِی صُدُورِهِمۡ إِلَّا كِبۡرࣱ مَّا هُم بِبَـٰلِغِیهِۚ فَٱسۡتَعِذۡ بِٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡبَصِیرُ ۝٥٦

The Study Quran

Truly those who dispute concerning the signs of God without any authority having come to them, there is naught in their breasts but a sense of greatness that they will never attain. So seek refuge in God. Truly He is the Hearer, the Seer

inna alladhīna yujādilūna fī āyāti l-lahi bighayri sul'ṭānin atāhum in fī ṣudūrihim illā kib'run mā hum bibālighīhi fa-is'taʿidh bil-lahi innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-baṣīr

لَخَلۡقُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَكۡبَرُ مِنۡ خَلۡقِ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٧

The Study Quran

Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind. But most of mankind know not

lakhalqu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi akbaru min khalqi l-nāsi walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

وَمَا یَسۡتَوِی ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ وَٱلۡبَصِیرُ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَلَا ٱلۡمُسِیۤءُۚ قَلِیلࣰا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٥٨

The Study Quran

And the blind and the seer are not equal; nor are those who believe and perform righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you reflect

wamā yastawī l-aʿmā wal-baṣīru wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti walā l-musīu qalīlan mā tatadhakkarūn

إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِیَةࣱ لَّا رَیۡبَ فِیهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥٩

The Study Quran

Surely the Hour is coming; in it there is no doubt. But most of mankind believe not

inna l-sāʿata laātiyatun lā rayba fīhā walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yu'minūn

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدۡعُونِیۤ أَسۡتَجِبۡ لَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِی سَیَدۡخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِینَ ۝٦٠

The Study Quran

And your Lord has said, “Call upon Me, and I shall respond to you. Truly those who are too arrogant to worship Me shall enter Hell debased.

waqāla rabbukumu id'ʿūnī astajib lakum inna alladhīna yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatī sayadkhulūna jahannama dākhirīn

7 Power of Allah

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ لِتَسۡكُنُوا۟ فِیهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبۡصِرًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَذُو فَضۡلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٦١

The Study Quran

God it is Who made the night for you, that you might rest therein, and the day by which to see. Truly God is Possessed of Bounty for mankind, but most of mankind does not give thanks

al-lahu alladhī jaʿala lakumu al-layla litaskunū fīhi wal-nahāra mub'ṣiran inna l-laha ladhū faḍlin ʿalā l-nāsi walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yashkurūn

ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡ خَـٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ لَّاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٦٢

The Study Quran

That is God, your Lord, Creator of all things; there is no god but He. How, then, are you perverted

dhālikumu l-lahu rabbukum khāliqu kulli shayin lā ilāha illā huwa fa-annā tu'fakūn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُؤۡفَكُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَانُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ یَجۡحَدُونَ ۝٦٣

The Study Quran

In this way were those who used to reject the signs of God perverted

kadhālika yu'faku alladhīna kānū biāyāti l-lahi yajḥadūn

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ قَرَارࣰا وَٱلسَّمَاۤءَ بِنَاۤءࣰ وَصَوَّرَكُمۡ فَأَحۡسَنَ صُوَرَكُمۡ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡۖ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٦٤

The Study Quran

God it is Who made the earth a dwelling place for you and the sky a canopy. And He formed you and made beautiful your forms, and provided you with good things. That is God, your Lord; so blessed is God, Lord of the worlds

al-lahu alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa qarāran wal-samāa bināan waṣawwarakum fa-aḥsana ṣuwarakum warazaqakum mina l-ṭayibāti dhālikumu l-lahu rabbukum fatabāraka l-lahu rabbu l-ʿālamīn

هُوَ ٱلۡحَیُّ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱدۡعُوهُ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَۗ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٦٥

The Study Quran

He is the Living; there is no god but He. So call upon Him, devoting religion entirely to Him. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds

huwa l-ḥayu lā ilāha illā huwa fa-id'ʿūhu mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna l-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

۞ قُلۡ إِنِّی نُهِیتُ أَنۡ أَعۡبُدَ ٱلَّذِینَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَمَّا جَاۤءَنِیَ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتُ مِن رَّبِّی وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أُسۡلِمَ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٦٦

The Study Quran

Say, “I have been forbidden to worship those upon whom you call apart from God, since clear proofs have come unto me from my Lord, and I am commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds.

qul innī nuhītu an aʿbuda alladhīna tadʿūna min dūni l-lahi lammā jāaniya l-bayinātu min rabbī wa-umir'tu an us'lima lirabbi l-ʿālamīn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابࣲ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطۡفَةࣲ ثُمَّ مِنۡ عَلَقَةࣲ ثُمَّ یُخۡرِجُكُمۡ طِفۡلࣰا ثُمَّ لِتَبۡلُغُوۤا۟ أَشُدَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُوا۟ شُیُوخࣰاۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن یُتَوَفَّىٰ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَلِتَبۡلُغُوۤا۟ أَجَلࣰا مُّسَمࣰّى وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٧

The Study Quran

He it is Who created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a blood clot. Then He brings you forth as infants, that you may then reach maturity, then that you may grow old—though some of you are taken earlier—that you may reach a term appointed, and that haply you may understand

huwa alladhī khalaqakum min turābin thumma min nuṭ'fatin thumma min ʿalaqatin thumma yukh'rijukum ṭif'lan thumma litablughū ashuddakum thumma litakūnū shuyūkhan waminkum man yutawaffā min qablu walitablughū ajalan musamman walaʿallakum taʿqilūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُۖ فَإِذَا قَضَىٰۤ أَمۡرࣰا فَإِنَّمَا یَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَیَكُونُ ۝٦٨

The Study Quran

He it is Who gives life and causes death. So when He decrees a thing, He only says to it, “Be!” and it is

huwa alladhī yuḥ'yī wayumītu fa-idhā qaḍā amran fa-innamā yaqūlu lahu kun fayakūn

8 End of Opposition

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ یُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ أَنَّىٰ یُصۡرَفُونَ ۝٦٩

The Study Quran

Hast thou not considered those who dispute concerning the signs of God, how they are turned away

alam tara ilā alladhīna yujādilūna fī āyāti l-lahi annā yuṣ'rafūn

ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَبِمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا بِهِۦ رُسُلَنَاۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٠

The Study Quran

those who deny the Book, and that wherewith We have sent Our messengers? But soon they will know

alladhīna kadhabū bil-kitābi wabimā arsalnā bihi rusulanā fasawfa yaʿlamūn

إِذِ ٱلۡأَغۡلَـٰلُ فِیۤ أَعۡنَـٰقِهِمۡ وَٱلسَّلَـٰسِلُ یُسۡحَبُونَ ۝٧١

The Study Quran

since they will be dragged, with shackles and chains around their necks

idhi l-aghlālu fī aʿnāqihim wal-salāsilu yus'ḥabūn

فِی ٱلۡحَمِیمِ ثُمَّ فِی ٱلنَّارِ یُسۡجَرُونَ ۝٧٢

The Study Quran

into boiling liquid; then they will be set aflame in the Fire

fī l-ḥamīmi thumma fī l-nāri yus'jarūn

ثُمَّ قِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٧٣

The Study Quran

Then it will be said unto them, “Where are those whom you used to ascribe as partner

thumma qīla lahum ayna mā kuntum tush'rikūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۖ قَالُوا۟ ضَلُّوا۟ عَنَّا بَل لَّمۡ نَكُن نَّدۡعُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلُ شَیۡءࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٧٤

The Study Quran

apart from God?” They will reply, “They have forsaken us. Nay, but we were not calling upon aught before.” Thus does God lead astray the disbelievers

min dūni l-lahi qālū ḍallū ʿannā bal lam nakun nadʿū min qablu shayan kadhālika yuḍillu l-lahu l-kāfirīn

ذَ ٰلِكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَفۡرَحُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَمۡرَحُونَ ۝٧٥

The Study Quran

“That is because you used to exult upon the earth without right and because you were insolent

dhālikum bimā kuntum tafraḥūna fī l-arḍi bighayri l-ḥaqi wabimā kuntum tamraḥūn

ٱدۡخُلُوۤا۟ أَبۡوَ ٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ مَثۡوَى ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرِینَ ۝٧٦

The Study Quran

Enter the gates of Hell, therein to abide.” How evil is the abode of the arrogant

ud'khulū abwāba jahannama khālidīna fīhā fabi'sa mathwā l-mutakabirīn

فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّۚ فَإِمَّا نُرِیَنَّكَ بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی نَعِدُهُمۡ أَوۡ نَتَوَفَّیَنَّكَ فَإِلَیۡنَا یُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٧٧

The Study Quran

So be patient. Surely God’s Promise is true. And whether We show thee a part of that which We promise them, or We take thee, unto Us will they be returned

fa-iṣ'bir inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun fa-immā nuriyannaka baʿḍa alladhī naʿiduhum aw natawaffayannaka fa-ilaynā yur'jaʿūn

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِكَ مِنۡهُم مَّن قَصَصۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن لَّمۡ نَقۡصُصۡ عَلَیۡكَۗ وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن یَأۡتِیَ بِءَایَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ قُضِیَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ۝٧٨

The Study Quran

Indeed We have sent messengers before thee. Among them are those whom We have recounted unto thee, and among them are those whom We have not recounted unto thee. And it was not for a messenger to bring a sign, save by God’s Leave. So when God’s Command comes, judgment is passed in truth; and those who make false claims will then be losers

walaqad arsalnā rusulan min qablika min'hum man qaṣaṣnā ʿalayka wamin'hum man lam naqṣuṣ ʿalayka wamā kāna lirasūlin an yatiya biāyatin illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi fa-idhā jāa amru l-lahi quḍiya bil-ḥaqi wakhasira hunālika l-mub'ṭilūn

9 End of Opposition

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمَ لِتَرۡكَبُوا۟ مِنۡهَا وَمِنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٧٩

The Study Quran

God it is Who made cattle for you, that some of them you may ride and some of them you may eat

al-lahu alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-anʿāma litarkabū min'hā wamin'hā takulūn

وَلَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَنَـٰفِعُ وَلِتَبۡلُغُوا۟ عَلَیۡهَا حَاجَةࣰ فِی صُدُورِكُمۡ وَعَلَیۡهَا وَعَلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ تُحۡمَلُونَ ۝٨٠

The Study Quran

and there are benefits for you therein—and that through them you may attain any need that is in your breasts. And upon them and upon ships are you carried

walakum fīhā manāfiʿu walitablughū ʿalayhā ḥājatan fī ṣudūrikum waʿalayhā waʿalā l-ful'ki tuḥ'malūn

وَیُرِیكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ فَأَیَّ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُنكِرُونَ ۝٨١

The Study Quran

And He shows you His signs. So which of God’s signs do you reject

wayurīkum āyātihi fa-ayya āyāti l-lahi tunkirūn

أَفَلَمۡ یَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَیَنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَانُوۤا۟ أَكۡثَرَ مِنۡهُمۡ وَأَشَدَّ قُوَّةࣰ وَءَاثَارࣰا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٨٢

The Study Quran

Have they not journeyed upon the earth and observed how those before them fared in the end? They were more numerous than them, greater than them in strength, and left firmer traces upon the earth. But that which they used to earn availed them not

afalam yasīrū fī l-arḍi fayanẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu alladhīna min qablihim kānū akthara min'hum wa-ashadda quwwatan waāthāran fī l-arḍi famā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَا عِندَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٨٣

The Study Quran

And when their messengers brought them clear proofs, they exulted in the knowledge they possessed, and that which they used to mock beset them

falammā jāathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti fariḥū bimā ʿindahum mina l-ʿil'mi waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡا۟ بَأۡسَنَا قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَحۡدَهُۥ وَكَفَرۡنَا بِمَا كُنَّا بِهِۦ مُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٨٤

The Study Quran

Then, when they saw Our Might, they said, “We believe in God alone, and we disavow that which we used to ascribe as partners unto Him.

falammā ra-aw basanā qālū āmannā bil-lahi waḥdahu wakafarnā bimā kunnā bihi mush'rikīn

فَلَمۡ یَكُ یَنفَعُهُمۡ إِیمَـٰنُهُمۡ لَمَّا رَأَوۡا۟ بَأۡسَنَاۖ سُنَّتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِی قَدۡ خَلَتۡ فِی عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٨٥

The Study Quran

But their believing benefited them not when they saw Our Might. [That is] the wont of God which has passed among His servants; and the disbelievers were then lost

falam yaku yanfaʿuhum īmānuhum lammā ra-aw basanā sunnata l-lahi allatī qad khalat fī ʿibādihi wakhasira hunālika l-kāfirūn
