The Kneeling, Crouching — Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Translation

وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مِن رِّزۡقࣲ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَا وَتَصۡرِیفِ ٱلرِّیَـٰحِ ءَایَـٰتࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

the alternation of the nighttime and the daytime and what God caused to descend from the heaven of provision. He gave life with it to the earth after its death and the diversifying of the winds—signs for a folk who are reasonable.

wa-ikh'tilāfi al-layli wal-nahāri wamā anzala l-lahu mina l-samāi min riz'qin fa-aḥyā bihi l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā wataṣrīfi l-riyāḥi āyātun liqawmin yaʿqilūn

45:6

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِ نَتۡلُوهَا عَلَیۡكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ فَبِأَیِّ حَدِیثِۭ بَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ وَءَایَـٰتِهِۦ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

These are the signs of God We recount to thee with The Truth. Then, in which discourse, after God and His signs, will they believe?

til'ka āyātu l-lahi natlūhā ʿalayka bil-ḥaqi fabi-ayyi ḥadīthin baʿda l-lahi waāyātihi yu'minūn

45:7

وَیۡلࣱ لِّكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Woe to every false, sinful one!

waylun likulli affākin athīmi

45:8

یَسۡمَعُ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ ثُمَّ یُصِرُّ مُسۡتَكۡبِرࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ یَسۡمَعۡهَاۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He hears the signs of God being recounted to him. Again, he persists as one who grows arrogant as if he hears them not. So give him good tidings of a painful punishment!

yasmaʿu āyāti l-lahi tut'lā ʿalayhi thumma yuṣirru mus'takbiran ka-an lam yasmaʿhā fabashir'hu biʿadhābin alīmi

45:9

وَإِذَا عَلِمَ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا شَیۡءًا ٱتَّخَذَهَا هُزُوًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And if he knew anything about Our signs, he took them to himself in mockery. Those, for them is a despised punishment.

wa-idhā ʿalima min āyātinā shayan ittakhadhahā huzuwan ulāika lahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

45:10

مِّن وَرَاۤىِٕهِمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَلَا یُغۡنِی عَنۡهُم مَّا كَسَبُوا۟ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا مَا ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمٌ ۝١٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Behind them there is hell. What they earned will avail them not at all nor whatever they took to themselves other than God as protectors. And for them will be a tremendous punishment.

min warāihim jahannamu walā yugh'nī ʿanhum mā kasabū shayan walā mā ittakhadhū min dūni l-lahi awliyāa walahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

45:11

هَـٰذَا هُدࣰىۖ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مِّن رِّجۡزٍ أَلِیمٌ ۝١١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

This is a guidance. Those who were ungrateful for the signs of their Lord, for them there is a punishment of painful wrath.

hādhā hudan wa-alladhīna kafarū biāyāti rabbihim lahum ʿadhābun min rij'zin alīmu

45:12

۞ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ لِتَجۡرِیَ ٱلۡفُلۡكُ فِیهِ بِأَمۡرِهِۦ وَلِتَبۡتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

God! It is He Who caused the sea to be subservient to you that the boats may run through it by His command and so that you be looking for His grace and so that perhaps you will give thanks.

al-lahu alladhī sakhara lakumu l-baḥra litajriya l-ful'ku fīhi bi-amrihi walitabtaghū min faḍlihi walaʿallakum tashkurūn

45:13

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا مِّنۡهُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝١٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And He caused to be subservient to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in and on the earth. All is from Him. Truly, in that are signs for a folk who reflect.

wasakhara lakum mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan min'hu inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yatafakkarūn

45:14

قُل لِّلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ یَغۡفِرُوا۟ لِلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ أَیَّامَ ٱللَّهِ لِیَجۡزِیَ قَوۡمَۢا بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝١٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Say to those who believed: Forgive those who hope not for the Days of God that He give recompense to a folk according to what they had been earning.

qul lilladhīna āmanū yaghfirū lilladhīna lā yarjūna ayyāma l-lahi liyajziya qawman bimā kānū yaksibūn

45:15

مَنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَنۡ أَسَاۤءَ فَعَلَیۡهَاۖ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمۡ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝١٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Whoever did as one in accord with morality, it is for himself and whoever did evil, it is against himself. Again, to your Lord you will be returned.

man ʿamila ṣāliḥan falinafsihi waman asāa faʿalayhā thumma ilā rabbikum tur'jaʿūn

45:16

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحُكۡمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ وَفَضَّلۡنَـٰهُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly, We gave the Children of Israel the Book, the critical judgment and the prophethood and We provided them from what is good and We gave them advantage over the worlds

walaqad ātaynā banī is'rāīla l-kitāba wal-ḥuk'ma wal-nubuwata warazaqnāhum mina l-ṭayibāti wafaḍḍalnāhum ʿalā l-ʿālamīn

45:17

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُم بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِۖ فَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُوۤا۟ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُ بَغۡیَۢا بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَقۡضِی بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and We gave them clear portents of the command. And they are not at variance until after the knowledge drew near them through insolence among themselves. Truly, thy Lord will decree between them on the Day of Resurrection about what they had been at variance in it.

waātaynāhum bayyinātin mina l-amri famā ikh'talafū illā min baʿdi mā jāahumu l-ʿil'mu baghyan baynahum inna rabbaka yaqḍī baynahum yawma l-qiyāmati fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn

45:18

ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَـٰكَ عَلَىٰ شَرِیعَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ فَٱتَّبِعۡهَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ أَهۡوَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, We assigned thee an open way of the command so follow it and follow not the desires of those who know not.

thumma jaʿalnāka ʿalā sharīʿatin mina l-amri fa-ittabiʿ'hā walā tattabiʿ ahwāa alladhīna lā yaʿlamūn

45:19

إِنَّهُمۡ لَن یُغۡنُوا۟ عَنكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءࣰاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءُ بَعۡضࣲۖ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِیُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, they will never avail thee against God at all. And, truly, the ones who are unjust, some of them are protectors of some others. But God is Protector of the ones who are Godfearing.

innahum lan yugh'nū ʿanka mina l-lahi shayan wa-inna l-ẓālimīna baʿḍuhum awliyāu baʿḍin wal-lahu waliyyu l-mutaqīn

45:20

هَـٰذَا بَصَـٰۤىِٕرُ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُوقِنُونَ ۝٢٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

This is a clear evidence for humanity and a guidance and a mercy for a folk who are certain.

hādhā baṣāiru lilnnāsi wahudan waraḥmatun liqawmin yūqinūn

45:21

أَمۡ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱجۡتَرَحُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ أَن نَّجۡعَلَهُمۡ كَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَوَاۤءࣰ مَّحۡیَاهُمۡ وَمَمَاتُهُمۡۚ سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٢١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Assumed those who sought to do evil deeds that We will make them equal with those who believed and did as the ones in accord with morality? Are their living and dying equal? How evil is the judgment they give!

am ḥasiba alladhīna ij'taraḥū l-sayiāti an najʿalahum ka-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti sawāan maḥyāhum wamamātuhum sāa mā yaḥkumūn

45:22

وَخَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلِتُجۡزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And God created the heavens and the earth with The Truth so that every soul would be given recompense for what it earned and they, they will not be wronged.

wakhalaqa l-lahu l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi walituj'zā kullu nafsin bimā kasabat wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

45:23

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمࣲ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمۡعِهِۦ وَقَلۡبِهِۦ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِۦ غِشَـٰوَةࣰ فَمَن یَهۡدِیهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱللَّهِۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Hadst thou considered he who took to himself his own desire as his god and whom God caused to go astray out of a knowledge, sealed over his having the ability to hear and his heart and laid a blindfold on his sight? Who, then, will guide him after God? Will you not, then, recollect?

afara-ayta mani ittakhadha ilāhahu hawāhu wa-aḍallahu l-lahu ʿalā ʿil'min wakhatama ʿalā samʿihi waqalbihi wajaʿala ʿalā baṣarihi ghishāwatan faman yahdīhi min baʿdi l-lahi afalā tadhakkarūn

45:24

وَقَالُوا۟ مَا هِیَ إِلَّا حَیَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنۡیَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحۡیَا وَمَا یُهۡلِكُنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهۡرُۚ وَمَا لَهُم بِذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَظُنُّونَ ۝٢٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they said: There is nothing, but this present life of ours. We die and we live and nothing causes us to perish but a long course of time. And there is for them not any knowledge. Truly, they are but surmising.

waqālū mā hiya illā ḥayātunā l-dun'yā namūtu wanaḥyā wamā yuh'likunā illā l-dahru wamā lahum bidhālika min ʿil'min in hum illā yaẓunnūn

45:25

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتُنَا بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ مَّا كَانَ حُجَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئۡتُوا۟ بِءَابَاۤىِٕنَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٢٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when are recounted to them Our signs, clear portents, then, disputation had not been but that they said: Bring our fathers if you had been ones who are sincere.

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhim āyātunā bayyinātin mā kāna ḥujjatahum illā an qālū i'tū biābāinā in kuntum ṣādiqīn

45:26

قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یُحۡیِیكُمۡ ثُمَّ یُمِیتُكُمۡ ثُمَّ یَجۡمَعُكُمۡ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Say: God gives you life. Again, He causes you to die. Again, He will gather you on the Day of Resurrection in which there is no doubt but most of humanity knows not.

quli l-lahu yuḥ'yīkum thumma yumītukum thumma yajmaʿukum ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati lā rayba fīhi walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

45:27

وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَیَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَخۡسَرُ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ۝٢٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And on a Day that the Hour will be secure, on that Day the ones who deal in falsehood will lose.

walillahi mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wayawma taqūmu l-sāʿatu yawma-idhin yakhsaru l-mub'ṭilūn

45:28

وَتَرَىٰ كُلَّ أُمَّةࣲ جَاثِیَةࣰۚ كُلُّ أُمَّةࣲ تُدۡعَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ كِتَـٰبِهَا ٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Thou wilt see each community one who crawls on its knees. Each community will be called to its book: This Day you will be given recompense for what you had been doing.

watarā kulla ummatin jāthiyatan kullu ummatin tud'ʿā ilā kitābihā l-yawma tuj'zawna mā kuntum taʿmalūn

45:29

هَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبُنَا یَنطِقُ عَلَیۡكُم بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَسۡتَنسِخُ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

This is Our Book that speaks for itself against you with The Truth. Truly, We registered what you had been doing.

hādhā kitābunā yanṭiqu ʿalaykum bil-ḥaqi innā kunnā nastansikhu mā kuntum taʿmalūn

45:30

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَیُدۡخِلُهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ فِی رَحۡمَتِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٣٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, as for those who believed and did as the ones in accord with morality, their Lord will cause them to enter in His mercy. That will be the winning the clear triumph.

fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti fayud'khiluhum rabbuhum fī raḥmatihi dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-mubīn

45:31

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَفَلَمۡ تَكُنۡ ءَایَـٰتِی تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرۡتُمۡ وَكُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But as for those who were ungrateful: Be not My signs recounted to you? Then, you grew arrogant and you had been a folk, ones who sin!

wa-ammā alladhīna kafarū afalam takun āyātī tut'lā ʿalaykum fa-is'takbartum wakuntum qawman muj'rimīn

45:32

وَإِذَا قِیلَ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهَا قُلۡتُم مَّا نَدۡرِی مَا ٱلسَّاعَةُ إِن نَّظُنُّ إِلَّا ظَنࣰّا وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُسۡتَیۡقِنِینَ ۝٣٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when it was said: Truly, the promise of God is true and the Hour, there is no doubt about it. You said: We are not informed about the Hour. Truly, We think it but an opinion and we are not ones who ascertain it.

wa-idhā qīla inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun wal-sāʿatu lā rayba fīhā qul'tum mā nadrī mā l-sāʿatu in naẓunnu illā ẓannan wamā naḥnu bimus'tayqinīn

45:33

وَبَدَا لَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٣٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And shown to themselves will be the evil deeds they did. They will be surrounded by what they had been ridiculing.

wabadā lahum sayyiātu mā ʿamilū waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

45:34

وَقِیلَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ نَنسَىٰكُمۡ كَمَا نَسِیتُمۡ لِقَاۤءَ یَوۡمِكُمۡ هَـٰذَا وَمَأۡوَىٰكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٣٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

It would be said: This Day We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this your Day. Your place of shelter will be the fire and there is not for you any one who helps.

waqīla l-yawma nansākum kamā nasītum liqāa yawmikum hādhā wamawākumu l-nāru wamā lakum min nāṣirīn

45:35

ذَ ٰلِكُم بِأَنَّكُمُ ٱتَّخَذۡتُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ هُزُوࣰا وَغَرَّتۡكُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ لَا یُخۡرَجُونَ مِنۡهَا وَلَا هُمۡ یُسۡتَعۡتَبُونَ ۝٣٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

This is because you took to yourselves the signs of God in mockery and this present life deluded you. So this Day they will not be brought out from there nor will they ask to be favored.

dhālikum bi-annakumu ittakhadhtum āyāti l-lahi huzuwan wagharratkumu l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā fal-yawma lā yukh'rajūna min'hā walā hum yus'taʿtabūn

45:36

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَرَبِّ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٣٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So The Praise belongs to God, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of the worlds.

falillahi l-ḥamdu rabbi l-samāwāti warabbi l-arḍi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

45:37

وَلَهُ ٱلۡكِبۡرِیَاۤءُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٣٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And His is the domination of the heavens and the earth. And He is The Almighty, The Wise.

walahu l-kib'riyāu fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm
