1 Denial of Revelation

تَنزِیلُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡحَكِیمِ ۝٢

The revelation knowledge of the Book, (this ‘Qur’ān’), is from Allâh, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

tanzīlu l-kitābi mina l-lahi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥakīm

إِنَّ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣

Indeed, in the heavens and on the earth are signs (of Allâh’s power & glory) for the ‘Monotheistic Believers’.

inna fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi laāyātin lil'mu'minīn

وَفِی خَلۡقِكُمۡ وَمَا یَبُثُّ مِن دَاۤبَّةٍ ءَایَـٰتࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُوقِنُونَ ۝٤

And in the creation of yourselves and what He scattered (through the earth) of moving creatures are signs (of Allâh’s power & glory) for a people who have a definite faith.

wafī khalqikum wamā yabuthu min dābbatin āyātun liqawmin yūqinūn

وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مِن رِّزۡقࣲ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَا وَتَصۡرِیفِ ٱلرِّیَـٰحِ ءَایَـٰتࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٥

And in the difference of night and day, in the provision which Allâh sends down from the sky and then resuscitates it after its death, and in the changing of the winds, are signs (of Allâh’s power & glory) for a people who are able to perceive the intended meaning of (His Signs).

wa-ikh'tilāfi al-layli wal-nahāri wamā anzala l-lahu mina l-samāi min riz'qin fa-aḥyā bihi l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā wataṣrīfi l-riyāḥi āyātun liqawmin yaʿqilūn

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِ نَتۡلُوهَا عَلَیۡكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ فَبِأَیِّ حَدِیثِۭ بَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ وَءَایَـٰتِهِۦ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٦

These are the (Holy) ‘Verses’ of Allâh, which We recite to you with truth. In which statement other than Allâh and His ‘Verses’ do they believe?

til'ka āyātu l-lahi natlūhā ʿalayka bil-ḥaqi fabi-ayyi ḥadīthin baʿda l-lahi waāyātihi yu'minūn

وَیۡلࣱ لِّكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٧

Woe unto every sinful liar,

waylun likulli affākin athīmi

یَسۡمَعُ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ ثُمَّ یُصِرُّ مُسۡتَكۡبِرࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ یَسۡمَعۡهَاۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٨

Who hears the (Holy) ‘Verses’ of Allâh being recited to him, then displays an arrogant attitude towards them as if he had not heard them. Thus, announce to him the agonizing chastisement.

yasmaʿu āyāti l-lahi tut'lā ʿalayhi thumma yuṣirru mus'takbiran ka-an lam yasmaʿhā fabashir'hu biʿadhābin alīmi

وَإِذَا عَلِمَ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا شَیۡءًا ٱتَّخَذَهَا هُزُوًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٩

When he learns something from Our (Holy) ‘Verses’, he takes them for a jest. For such there will be a humiliating chastisement.

wa-idhā ʿalima min āyātinā shayan ittakhadhahā huzuwan ulāika lahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

مِّن وَرَاۤىِٕهِمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَلَا یُغۡنِی عَنۡهُم مَّا كَسَبُوا۟ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا مَا ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمٌ ۝١٠

In front of them, there is hellfire, and that which they have earned will avail them not, nor those whom they have taken as guardians besides Allâh. And they will be subjected to a tremendous chastisement.

min warāihim jahannamu walā yugh'nī ʿanhum mā kasabū shayan walā mā ittakhadhū min dūni l-lahi awliyāa walahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

هَـٰذَا هُدࣰىۖ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مِّن رِّجۡزٍ أَلِیمٌ ۝١١

This (‘Qur’ān’) is the source of inner guidance and spiritual transformation. Those who disbelieve in the (Holy) ‘Verses’ of their Lord will be subjected to an extremely agonizing punishment.

hādhā hudan wa-alladhīna kafarū biāyāti rabbihim lahum ʿadhābun min rij'zin alīmu

2 Truth of the Revelation

۞ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ لِتَجۡرِیَ ٱلۡفُلۡكُ فِیهِ بِأَمۡرِهِۦ وَلِتَبۡتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢

Allâh is the One Who made subservient unto you the sea so that the ships may run therein by His Command, that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may show gratitude (to Him for His endless blessings) .

al-lahu alladhī sakhara lakumu l-baḥra litajriya l-ful'ku fīhi bi-amrihi walitabtaghū min faḍlihi walaʿallakum tashkurūn

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا مِّنۡهُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝١٣

He also made subservient to you all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth; it is all from Him. Indeed, there are signs (of Allâh’s power & glory) in this for a people who ruminate (on the nature of existence).

wasakhara lakum mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan min'hu inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yatafakkarūn

قُل لِّلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ یَغۡفِرُوا۟ لِلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ أَیَّامَ ٱللَّهِ لِیَجۡزِیَ قَوۡمَۢا بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝١٤

Tell those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism to forgive those who do not look for the days of Allâh , so much so that He will recompense the people for what they used to earn.

qul lilladhīna āmanū yaghfirū lilladhīna lā yarjūna ayyāma l-lahi liyajziya qawman bimā kānū yaksibūn

مَنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَنۡ أَسَاۤءَ فَعَلَیۡهَاۖ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمۡ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝١٥

Whoever does righteous good deed, it is for the benefit of himself, and whoever does evil, it is against himself. Then to your Lord, you are all destined to be brought back.

man ʿamila ṣāliḥan falinafsihi waman asāa faʿalayhā thumma ilā rabbikum tur'jaʿūn

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحُكۡمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ وَفَضَّلۡنَـٰهُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

Verily we gave the ‘Children of Israel’ the ‘Scripture’, the authority and ‘Prophethood’, provided them with wholesome good things and preferred them over all the other nations.

walaqad ātaynā banī is'rāīla l-kitāba wal-ḥuk'ma wal-nubuwata warazaqnāhum mina l-ṭayibāti wafaḍḍalnāhum ʿalā l-ʿālamīn

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُم بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِۖ فَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُوۤا۟ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُ بَغۡیَۢا بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَقۡضِی بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٧

We also gave them the knowledge of truth about (divine) matters. Thus, they did not differ until after knowledge of Truth had come to them, out of jealousy (and animosity) among themselves. Definitely, Your Lord will judge between them on the ‘Day of Resurrection’ concerning that wherein they used to differ.

waātaynāhum bayyinātin mina l-amri famā ikh'talafū illā min baʿdi mā jāahumu l-ʿil'mu baghyan baynahum inna rabbaka yaqḍī baynahum yawma l-qiyāmati fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn

ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَـٰكَ عَلَىٰ شَرِیعَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ فَٱتَّبِعۡهَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ أَهۡوَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٨

Then We put you, (‘Muhammad’), on a clear way of (Our) commandment. Therefore, follow it, and take not in the self-deceived beliefs of those who lack knowledge (of Allâh) for the epistemic.

thumma jaʿalnāka ʿalā sharīʿatin mina l-amri fa-ittabiʿ'hā walā tattabiʿ ahwāa alladhīna lā yaʿlamūn

إِنَّهُمۡ لَن یُغۡنُوا۟ عَنكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءࣰاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءُ بَعۡضࣲۖ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِیُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٩

Absolutely, they can avail you naught against (the wrath of) Allâh. It must be the case that the iniquitous are allies of one another while Allâh is a close ally of the ‘Pious’ (whose faith is unfeigned).

innahum lan yugh'nū ʿanka mina l-lahi shayan wa-inna l-ẓālimīna baʿḍuhum awliyāu baʿḍin wal-lahu waliyyu l-mutaqīn

هَـٰذَا بَصَـٰۤىِٕرُ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُوقِنُونَ ۝٢٠

This (‘Qur’ān’) is absolutely an evident enlightenment for mankind, a source of spiritual insight, and divine clemency, for a people who have a definite faith in It.

hādhā baṣāiru lilnnāsi wahudan waraḥmatun liqawmin yūqinūn

أَمۡ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱجۡتَرَحُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ أَن نَّجۡعَلَهُمۡ كَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَوَاۤءࣰ مَّحۡیَاهُمۡ وَمَمَاتُهُمۡۚ سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٢١

Or do those who commit evil deeds think that We shall make their life and death identical to those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism and do righteous good deeds (in the worldly life)? Evil is what they judge!

am ḥasiba alladhīna ij'taraḥū l-sayiāti an najʿalahum ka-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti sawāan maḥyāhum wamamātuhum sāa mā yaḥkumūn

3 Denial of Judgment

وَخَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلِتُجۡزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٢

Allâh created the heavens and earth for a specific reason. It must be the case that every ‘Human Self’ will be duly recompensed for his deeds. They will not be wronged.

wakhalaqa l-lahu l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi walituj'zā kullu nafsin bimā kasabat wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمࣲ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمۡعِهِۦ وَقَلۡبِهِۦ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِۦ غِشَـٰوَةࣰ فَمَن یَهۡدِیهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱللَّهِۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٣

Have you seen the one who has taken his own whim as his god? Thus, Allâh sends him astray purposely, seals up his hearing and his heart, and places on his insight a covering. Then who can guide him after Allâh (has condemned him)? Will you not then celebrate the praise of Allâh and declare His divine glory?

afara-ayta mani ittakhadha ilāhahu hawāhu wa-aḍallahu l-lahu ʿalā ʿil'min wakhatama ʿalā samʿihi waqalbihi wajaʿala ʿalā baṣarihi ghishāwatan faman yahdīhi min baʿdi l-lahi afalā tadhakkarūn

وَقَالُوا۟ مَا هِیَ إِلَّا حَیَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنۡیَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحۡیَا وَمَا یُهۡلِكُنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهۡرُۚ وَمَا لَهُم بِذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَظُنُّونَ ۝٢٤

They say: "We only live in this ‘worldly life’. We live and die. And nothing causes us to perish but a long course of time.” They have of that no knowledge. They are only speculating.

waqālū mā hiya illā ḥayātunā l-dun'yā namūtu wanaḥyā wamā yuh'likunā illā l-dahru wamā lahum bidhālika min ʿil'min in hum illā yaẓunnūn

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتُنَا بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ مَّا كَانَ حُجَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئۡتُوا۟ بِءَابَاۤىِٕنَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٢٥

When Our (Holy) ‘Verses’ are recited to them as revelation in the knowledge of Allâh, their only argument is that they say: "Bring back our forefathers, if you are truthful."

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhim āyātunā bayyinātin mā kāna ḥujjatahum illā an qālū i'tū biābāinā in kuntum ṣādiqīn

قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یُحۡیِیكُمۡ ثُمَّ یُمِیتُكُمۡ ثُمَّ یَجۡمَعُكُمۡ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٦

Say: "Allâh gives you life, then causes you to die, then will He bring you together to the ‘Day of Resurrection’ whereof there is no doubt. But most of the people do not posses enough knowledge (of Allâh).

quli l-lahu yuḥ'yīkum thumma yumītukum thumma yajmaʿukum ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati lā rayba fīhi walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

4 The Doom

وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَیَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَخۡسَرُ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ۝٢٧

Unto Allâh belongs the (absolute) sovereignty of the heavens and of the earth. On the day when the ‘Hour’ of (Reckoning) comes to pass, there will be a great loss to the those who used to promote falsehood.

walillahi mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wayawma taqūmu l-sāʿatu yawma-idhin yakhsaru l-mub'ṭilūn

وَتَرَىٰ كُلَّ أُمَّةࣲ جَاثِیَةࣰۚ كُلُّ أُمَّةࣲ تُدۡعَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ كِتَـٰبِهَا ٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٨

You will behold each nation kneeling down. Each nation will be called to its record. They will be told: "On this day, you are going to be requited for what you used to do."

watarā kulla ummatin jāthiyatan kullu ummatin tud'ʿā ilā kitābihā l-yawma tuj'zawna mā kuntum taʿmalūn

هَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبُنَا یَنطِقُ عَلَیۡكُم بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَسۡتَنسِخُ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٩

This is Our Book (of Deeds), speaking about you with truth. Indeed, We put everything that you used to do in writing!

hādhā kitābunā yanṭiqu ʿalaykum bil-ḥaqi innā kunnā nastansikhu mā kuntum taʿmalūn

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَیُدۡخِلُهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ فِی رَحۡمَتِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٣٠

Thus those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism and do righteous good deeds (in this ‘worldly life’), their Lord will admit them into His (divine) clemency. This is ultimate success and the supreme one.

fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti fayud'khiluhum rabbuhum fī raḥmatihi dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-mubīn

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَفَلَمۡ تَكُنۡ ءَایَـٰتِی تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرۡتُمۡ وَكُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣١

But as for those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh) , (it will be said unto them): "Were not Our ‘Verses’ recited to you? But you displayed an arrogant attitude and you were a folk of ungodly sinners."

wa-ammā alladhīna kafarū afalam takun āyātī tut'lā ʿalaykum fa-is'takbartum wakuntum qawman muj'rimīn

وَإِذَا قِیلَ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهَا قُلۡتُم مَّا نَدۡرِی مَا ٱلسَّاعَةُ إِن نَّظُنُّ إِلَّا ظَنࣰّا وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُسۡتَیۡقِنِینَ ۝٣٢

When it was said: "definitely, the promise of Allâh is true, and that the ‘Hour’ (of Reckoning) is inevitable." You said: “We do not know what the ‘Hour’ (of Reckoning) is. We think it to be nothing more than a mere speculation. Therefore, we are by no means convinced.”

wa-idhā qīla inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun wal-sāʿatu lā rayba fīhā qul'tum mā nadrī mā l-sāʿatu in naẓunnu illā ẓannan wamā naḥnu bimus'tayqinīn

وَبَدَا لَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٣٣

The evil of their deeds will appear to them, and they will be encompassed by what they used to scoff.

wabadā lahum sayyiātu mā ʿamilū waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

وَقِیلَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ نَنسَىٰكُمۡ كَمَا نَسِیتُمۡ لِقَاۤءَ یَوۡمِكُمۡ هَـٰذَا وَمَأۡوَىٰكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٣٤

It will be said: "This ‘Day’ We will forget you, just as you forgot the meeting of this day of yours. Your abode is going to be Hellfire, and there is none to help you.

waqīla l-yawma nansākum kamā nasītum liqāa yawmikum hādhā wamawākumu l-nāru wamā lakum min nāṣirīn

ذَ ٰلِكُم بِأَنَّكُمُ ٱتَّخَذۡتُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ هُزُوࣰا وَغَرَّتۡكُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ لَا یُخۡرَجُونَ مِنۡهَا وَلَا هُمۡ یُسۡتَعۡتَبُونَ ۝٣٥

That is because you made the (Holy) ‘Verses’ of Allâh a (source of) mockery, being deceived by this ‘worldly life’.” Therefore, on that day, they will not be taken out of it, nor will they be allowed to make amends.

dhālikum bi-annakumu ittakhadhtum āyāti l-lahi huzuwan wagharratkumu l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā fal-yawma lā yukh'rajūna min'hā walā hum yus'taʿtabūn

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَرَبِّ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٣٦

All the praises and gratitude belong to Allâh, the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of all the worlds!

falillahi l-ḥamdu rabbi l-samāwāti warabbi l-arḍi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

وَلَهُ ٱلۡكِبۡرِیَاۤءُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٣٧

Unto Him belongs the Majesty in the heavens and on the earth, and He is the All-Mighty, the All- Wise.

walahu l-kib'riyāu fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm
