1 Opponents will perish in War

ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ أَضَلَّ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ ۝١

The Study Quran

Those who disbelieve and turn from the way of God—He has made their deeds go astray

alladhīna kafarū waṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi aḍalla aʿmālahu

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَءَامَنُوا۟ بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدࣲ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ كَفَّرَ عَنۡهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتِهِمۡ وَأَصۡلَحَ بَالَهُمۡ ۝٢

The Study Quran

And those who believe and perform righteous deeds, and believe in what has been sent down unto Muhammad—and it is the truth from their Lord—He has absolved them of their evil deeds and set their state aright

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti waāmanū bimā nuzzila ʿalā muḥammadin wahuwa l-ḥaqu min rabbihim kaffara ʿanhum sayyiātihim wa-aṣlaḥa bālahu

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلۡبَـٰطِلَ وَأَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلۡحَقَّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ أَمۡثَـٰلَهُمۡ ۝٣

The Study Quran

That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood and because those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does God set forth for mankind their likenesses

dhālika bi-anna alladhīna kafarū ittabaʿū l-bāṭila wa-anna alladhīna āmanū ittabaʿū l-ḥaqa min rabbihim kadhālika yaḍribu l-lahu lilnnāsi amthālahu

فَإِذَا لَقِیتُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَضَرۡبَ ٱلرِّقَابِ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَثۡخَنتُمُوهُمۡ فَشُدُّوا۟ ٱلۡوَثَاقَ فَإِمَّا مَنَّۢا بَعۡدُ وَإِمَّا فِدَاۤءً حَتَّىٰ تَضَعَ ٱلۡحَرۡبُ أَوۡزَارَهَاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَلَوۡ یَشَاۤءُ ٱللَّهُ لَٱنتَصَرَ مِنۡهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن لِّیَبۡلُوَا۟ بَعۡضَكُم بِبَعۡضࣲۗ وَٱلَّذِینَ قُتِلُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَن یُضِلَّ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ ۝٤

The Study Quran

When you meet those who disbelieve, strike at their necks; then, when you have overwhelmed them, tighten the bonds. Then free them graciously or hold them for ransom, till war lays down its burdens. Thus [shall it be]. And if God willed, He would take vengeance upon them, but that He may test some of you by means of others, And as for those who are slain in the way of God, He will not make their deeds go astray

fa-idhā laqītumu alladhīna kafarū faḍarba l-riqābi ḥattā idhā athkhantumūhum fashuddū l-wathāqa fa-immā mannan baʿdu wa-immā fidāan ḥattā taḍaʿa l-ḥarbu awzārahā dhālika walaw yashāu l-lahu la-intaṣara min'hum walākin liyabluwā baʿḍakum bibaʿḍin wa-alladhīna qutilū fī sabīli l-lahi falan yuḍilla aʿmālahu

سَیَهۡدِیهِمۡ وَیُصۡلِحُ بَالَهُمۡ ۝٥

The Study Quran

He will guide them and set their state aright

sayahdīhim wayuṣ'liḥu bālahu

وَیُدۡخِلُهُمُ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ عَرَّفَهَا لَهُمۡ ۝٦

The Study Quran

and cause them to enter the Garden, having made it known to them

wayud'khiluhumu l-janata ʿarrafahā lahu

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِن تَنصُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ یَنصُرۡكُمۡ وَیُثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَكُمۡ ۝٧

The Study Quran

you who believe! If you help God, He will help you and make firm your steps

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū in tanṣurū l-laha yanṣur'kum wayuthabbit aqdāmaku

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَتَعۡسࣰا لَّهُمۡ وَأَضَلَّ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ ۝٨

The Study Quran

As for those who disbelieve, wretched are they, and He has made their deeds go astray

wa-alladhīna kafarū fataʿsan lahum wa-aḍalla aʿmālahu

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَرِهُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ فَأَحۡبَطَ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ ۝٩

The Study Quran

That is because they were averse to that which God sent down, so He made their deeds come to naught

dhālika bi-annahum karihū mā anzala l-lahu fa-aḥbaṭa aʿmālahu

۞ أَفَلَمۡ یَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَیَنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۖ دَمَّرَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِمۡۖ وَلِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ أَمۡثَـٰلُهَا ۝١٠

The Study Quran

Have they not journeyed upon the earth and observed how those before them fared in the end? God destroyed them; and the disbelievers shall have the like thereof

afalam yasīrū fī l-arḍi fayanẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu alladhīna min qablihim dammara l-lahu ʿalayhim walil'kāfirīna amthāluh

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَوۡلَى ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَأَنَّ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ لَا مَوۡلَىٰ لَهُمۡ ۝١١

The Study Quran

That is because God is Master of those who believe, and because the disbelievers have no master

dhālika bi-anna l-laha mawlā alladhīna āmanū wa-anna l-kāfirīna lā mawlā lahu

2 Oppressors brought low

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُدۡخِلُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُۖ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یَتَمَتَّعُونَ وَیَأۡكُلُونَ كَمَا تَأۡكُلُ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمُ وَٱلنَّارُ مَثۡوࣰى لَّهُمۡ ۝١٢

The Study Quran

Truly God causes those who believe and perform righteous deeds to enter Gardens with rivers running below, while those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat; and the Fire shall be an abode for them

inna l-laha yud'khilu alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru wa-alladhīna kafarū yatamattaʿūna wayakulūna kamā takulu l-anʿāmu wal-nāru mathwan lahu

وَكَأَیِّن مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ هِیَ أَشَدُّ قُوَّةࣰ مِّن قَرۡیَتِكَ ٱلَّتِیۤ أَخۡرَجَتۡكَ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَلَا نَاصِرَ لَهُمۡ ۝١٣

The Study Quran

And how many a town greater in strength than thy town which cast thee out have We destroyed, having none then to help them

waka-ayyin min qaryatin hiya ashaddu quwwatan min qaryatika allatī akhrajatka ahlaknāhum falā nāṣira lahu

أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَیِّنَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ كَمَن زُیِّنَ لَهُۥ سُوۤءُ عَمَلِهِۦ وَٱتَّبَعُوۤا۟ أَهۡوَاۤءَهُم ۝١٤

The Study Quran

Is one who stands upon a clear proof from his Lord like one whose evil deeds are made to seem fair unto him and like those who follow their caprices

afaman kāna ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbihi kaman zuyyina lahu sūu ʿamalihi wa-ittabaʿū ahwāahu

مَّثَلُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِی وُعِدَ ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَۖ فِیهَاۤ أَنۡهَـٰرࣱ مِّن مَّاۤءٍ غَیۡرِ ءَاسِنࣲ وَأَنۡهَـٰرࣱ مِّن لَّبَنࣲ لَّمۡ یَتَغَیَّرۡ طَعۡمُهُۥ وَأَنۡهَـٰرࣱ مِّنۡ خَمۡرࣲ لَّذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ وَأَنۡهَـٰرࣱ مِّنۡ عَسَلࣲ مُّصَفࣰّىۖ وَلَهُمۡ فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِ وَمَغۡفِرَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ كَمَنۡ هُوَ خَـٰلِدࣱ فِی ٱلنَّارِ وَسُقُوا۟ مَاۤءً حَمِیمࣰا فَقَطَّعَ أَمۡعَاۤءَهُمۡ ۝١٥

The Study Quran

The parable of the Garden that has been promised to the reverent: therein lie rivers of water incorruptible, rivers of milk whose flavor does not change, rivers of wine delicious for those who imbibe, and rivers of purified honey. Therein they partake of every fruit and of forgiveness from their Lord. [Are they] like one who abides in the Fire and those who are made to drink a boiling liquid which then tears apart their bowels

mathalu l-janati allatī wuʿida l-mutaqūna fīhā anhārun min māin ghayri āsinin wa-anhārun min labanin lam yataghayyar ṭaʿmuhu wa-anhārun min khamrin ladhatin lilshāribīna wa-anhārun min ʿasalin muṣaffan walahum fīhā min kulli l-thamarāti wamaghfiratun min rabbihim kaman huwa khālidun fī l-nāri wasuqū māan ḥamīman faqaṭṭaʿa amʿāahu

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَسۡتَمِعُ إِلَیۡكَ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا خَرَجُوا۟ مِنۡ عِندِكَ قَالُوا۟ لِلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ مَاذَا قَالَ ءَانِفًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَٱتَّبَعُوۤا۟ أَهۡوَاۤءَهُمۡ ۝١٦

The Study Quran

Among them are those who listen unto thee. Then when they depart from thee they say to those who have been given knowledge, “What did he say?” It is they whose hearts God has sealed and who follow their caprices

wamin'hum man yastamiʿu ilayka ḥattā idhā kharajū min ʿindika qālū lilladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma mādhā qāla ānifan ulāika alladhīna ṭabaʿa l-lahu ʿalā qulūbihim wa-ittabaʿū ahwāahu

وَٱلَّذِینَ ٱهۡتَدَوۡا۟ زَادَهُمۡ هُدࣰى وَءَاتَىٰهُمۡ تَقۡوَىٰهُمۡ ۝١٧

The Study Quran

But those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and grants them their reverence

wa-alladhīna ih'tadaw zādahum hudan waātāhum taqwāhu

فَهَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰۖ فَقَدۡ جَاۤءَ أَشۡرَاطُهَاۚ فَأَنَّىٰ لَهُمۡ إِذَا جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ ذِكۡرَىٰهُمۡ ۝١٨

The Study Quran

Do they await aught but that the Hour should come upon them suddenly? Yet its portents have already come. Then when it has come upon them, what will their remembrance do for them

fahal yanẓurūna illā l-sāʿata an tatiyahum baghtatan faqad jāa ashrāṭuhā fa-annā lahum idhā jāathum dhik'rāhu

فَٱعۡلَمۡ أَنَّهُۥ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِۗ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمۡ وَمَثۡوَىٰكُمۡ ۝١٩

The Study Quran

Know, then, that there is no god but God, and ask forgiveness for thy sin and for the believing men and the believing women. God knows your coming and going, and your abode

fa-iʿ'lam annahu lā ilāha illā l-lahu wa-is'taghfir lidhanbika walil'mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti wal-lahu yaʿlamu mutaqallabakum wamathwāku

3 The Weak-hearted Ones

وَیَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَتۡ سُورَةࣱۖ فَإِذَاۤ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةࣱ مُّحۡكَمَةࣱ وَذُكِرَ فِیهَا ٱلۡقِتَالُ رَأَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَیۡكَ نَظَرَ ٱلۡمَغۡشِیِّ عَلَیۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۖ فَأَوۡلَىٰ لَهُمۡ ۝٢٠

The Study Quran

Those who believe say, “Would that a surah were sent down.” Then when a definitive surah wherein fighting is mentioned is sent down, thou seest those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee as if death had overcome them. More fitting for the

wayaqūlu alladhīna āmanū lawlā nuzzilat sūratun fa-idhā unzilat sūratun muḥ'kamatun wadhukira fīhā l-qitālu ra-ayta alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun yanẓurūna ilayka naẓara l-maghshiyi ʿalayhi mina l-mawti fa-awlā lahu

طَاعَةࣱ وَقَوۡلࣱ مَّعۡرُوفࣱۚ فَإِذَا عَزَمَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ فَلَوۡ صَدَقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَكَانَ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۡ ۝٢١

The Study Quran

would be obedience to God and honorable speech. Then, when the matter is resolved, were they true to God, it would be better for them

ṭāʿatun waqawlun maʿrūfun fa-idhā ʿazama l-amru falaw ṣadaqū l-laha lakāna khayran lahu

فَهَلۡ عَسَیۡتُمۡ إِن تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ أَن تُفۡسِدُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوۤا۟ أَرۡحَامَكُمۡ ۝٢٢

The Study Quran

Were you to turn away, would you perchance work corruption upon the earth and break your family relations

fahal ʿasaytum in tawallaytum an tuf'sidū fī l-arḍi watuqaṭṭiʿū arḥāmaku

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَأَصَمَّهُمۡ وَأَعۡمَىٰۤ أَبۡصَـٰرَهُمۡ ۝٢٣

The Study Quran

They are those whom God has cursed, making them deaf and blinding their sight

ulāika alladhīna laʿanahumu l-lahu fa-aṣammahum wa-aʿmā abṣārahu

أَفَلَا یَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ أَمۡ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقۡفَالُهَاۤ ۝٢٤

The Study Quran

Do they not contemplate the Quran? Or do hearts have their locks upon them

afalā yatadabbarūna l-qur'āna am ʿalā qulūbin aqfāluh

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱرۡتَدُّوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَدۡبَـٰرِهِم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡهُدَى ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ سَوَّلَ لَهُمۡ وَأَمۡلَىٰ لَهُمۡ ۝٢٥

The Study Quran

Truly those who turn their backs after guidance has been made clear to them—Satan has seduced them, yet He grants them respite

inna alladhīna ir'taddū ʿalā adbārihim min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahumu l-hudā l-shayṭānu sawwala lahum wa-amlā lahu

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَالُوا۟ لِلَّذِینَ كَرِهُوا۟ مَا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ سَنُطِیعُكُمۡ فِی بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَمۡرِۖ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ إِسۡرَارَهُمۡ ۝٢٦

The Study Quran

That is because they say to those who are averse to what God has sent down, “We shall obey you in some matters.” And God knows their keeping of secrets

dhālika bi-annahum qālū lilladhīna karihū mā nazzala l-lahu sanuṭīʿukum fī baʿḍi l-amri wal-lahu yaʿlamu is'rārahu

فَكَیۡفَ إِذَا تَوَفَّتۡهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ یَضۡرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمۡ وَأَدۡبَـٰرَهُمۡ ۝٢٧

The Study Quran

Then how will it be when the angels seize them, striking their faces and their backs

fakayfa idhā tawaffathumu l-malāikatu yaḍribūna wujūhahum wa-adbārahu

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَاۤ أَسۡخَطَ ٱللَّهَ وَكَرِهُوا۟ رِضۡوَ ٰنَهُۥ فَأَحۡبَطَ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ ۝٢٨

The Study Quran

That is because they followed that which angers God and were averse to His good pleasure; so He made their deeds come to naught

dhālika bi-annahumu ittabaʿū mā askhaṭa l-laha wakarihū riḍ'wānahu fa-aḥbaṭa aʿmālahu

4 An Exhortation

أَمۡ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَن لَّن یُخۡرِجَ ٱللَّهُ أَضۡغَـٰنَهُمۡ ۝٢٩

The Study Quran

Or do those in whose hearts is a disease suppose that God will not expose their rancor

am ḥasiba alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun an lan yukh'rija l-lahu aḍghānahu

وَلَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَأَرَیۡنَـٰكَهُمۡ فَلَعَرَفۡتَهُم بِسِیمَـٰهُمۡۚ وَلَتَعۡرِفَنَّهُمۡ فِی لَحۡنِ ٱلۡقَوۡلِۚ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ أَعۡمَـٰلَكُمۡ ۝٣٠

The Study Quran

And if We willed, We would show them to you so that you would know them by their mark. And you will certainly know them by their tone of speech. And God knows your deeds

walaw nashāu la-araynākahum falaʿaraftahum bisīmāhum walataʿrifannahum fī laḥni l-qawli wal-lahu yaʿlamu aʿmālaku

وَلَنَبۡلُوَنَّكُمۡ حَتَّىٰ نَعۡلَمَ ٱلۡمُجَـٰهِدِینَ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ وَنَبۡلُوَا۟ أَخۡبَارَكُمۡ ۝٣١

The Study Quran

And We shall test you until We know those among you who strive and those who are patient, and We shall test your proclamations

walanabluwannakum ḥattā naʿlama l-mujāhidīna minkum wal-ṣābirīna wanabluwā akhbāraku

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَشَاۤقُّوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ لَن یَضُرُّوا۟ ٱللَّهَ شَیۡءࣰا وَسَیُحۡبِطُ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ ۝٣٢

The Study Quran

Truly those who disbelieve and turn from the way of God, and oppose the Messenger of God after guidance has been made clear to them will not harm God in the least. And He will make their deeds come to naught

inna alladhīna kafarū waṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi washāqqū l-rasūla min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahumu l-hudā lan yaḍurrū l-laha shayan wasayuḥ'biṭu aʿmālahu

۞ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ أَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَلَا تُبۡطِلُوۤا۟ أَعۡمَـٰلَكُمۡ ۝٣٣

The Study Quran

O you who believe! Obey God and obey the Messenger and let not your deeds be in vain

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū aṭīʿū l-laha wa-aṭīʿū l-rasūla walā tub'ṭilū aʿmālaku

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ مَاتُوا۟ وَهُمۡ كُفَّارࣱ فَلَن یَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ ۝٣٤

The Study Quran

Truly those who disbelieve and turn from the way of God, then die while they are disbelievers, God will not forgive them

inna alladhīna kafarū waṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi thumma mātū wahum kuffārun falan yaghfira l-lahu lahu

فَلَا تَهِنُوا۟ وَتَدۡعُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱلسَّلۡمِ وَأَنتُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَوۡنَ وَٱللَّهُ مَعَكُمۡ وَلَن یَتِرَكُمۡ أَعۡمَـٰلَكُمۡ ۝٣٥

The Study Quran

So do not falter and call for peace while you have the upper hand. God is with you and will not deprive you of your deeds

falā tahinū watadʿū ilā l-salmi wa-antumu l-aʿlawna wal-lahu maʿakum walan yatirakum aʿmālaku

إِنَّمَا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا لَعِبࣱ وَلَهۡوࣱۚ وَإِن تُؤۡمِنُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ یُؤۡتِكُمۡ أُجُورَكُمۡ وَلَا یَسۡءَلۡكُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلَكُمۡ ۝٣٦

The Study Quran

The life of this world is but play and diversion. If you believe and are reverent, He will give you your rewards and not ask you for your wealth

innamā l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā laʿibun walahwun wa-in tu'minū watattaqū yu'tikum ujūrakum walā yasalkum amwālaku

إِن یَسۡءَلۡكُمُوهَا فَیُحۡفِكُمۡ تَبۡخَلُوا۟ وَیُخۡرِجۡ أَضۡغَـٰنَكُمۡ ۝٣٧

The Study Quran

Were He to ask you for it, then implore you, you would be miserly, and He would expose your rancor

in yasalkumūhā fayuḥ'fikum tabkhalū wayukh'rij aḍghānaku

هَـٰۤأَنتُمۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ تُدۡعَوۡنَ لِتُنفِقُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَمِنكُم مَّن یَبۡخَلُۖ وَمَن یَبۡخَلۡ فَإِنَّمَا یَبۡخَلُ عَن نَّفۡسِهِۦۚ وَٱللَّهُ ٱلۡغَنِیُّ وَأَنتُمُ ٱلۡفُقَرَاۤءُۚ وَإِن تَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ یَسۡتَبۡدِلۡ قَوۡمًا غَیۡرَكُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا یَكُونُوۤا۟ أَمۡثَـٰلَكُم ۝٣٨

The Study Quran

Behold! You are those who are called upon to spend in the way of God; yet among you some are miserly. And whosoever is miserly is only miserly toward himself. God is the Rich, and you are the poor. And if you turn away, He will cause a people other than you to take your place, and they will not be the likes of you

hāantum hāulāi tud'ʿawna litunfiqū fī sabīli l-lahi faminkum man yabkhalu waman yabkhal fa-innamā yabkhalu ʿan nafsihi wal-lahu l-ghaniyu wa-antumu l-fuqarāu wa-in tatawallaw yastabdil qawman ghayrakum thumma lā yakūnū amthālaku
