The Hypocrites — Bilal Muhammad 2018 Translation

63:1

إِذَا جَاۤءَكَ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشۡهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ یَشۡهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١

When the hypocrites come to you they say, “We bear witness that you are indeed the messenger of God.” Yes, God knows that you are indeed His messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are indeed liars

idhā jāaka l-munāfiqūna qālū nashhadu innaka larasūlu l-lahi wal-lahu yaʿlamu innaka larasūluhu wal-lahu yashhadu inna l-munāfiqīna lakādhibūn

63:2

ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةࣰ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَاۤءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢

They have made their promises a screen, and they obstruct the people from the path of God. Truly harmful are their deeds

ittakhadhū aymānahum junnatan faṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūn

63:3

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٣

Because they believed, then they rejected faith, a seal was set on their hearts, therefore they do not understand

dhālika bi-annahum āmanū thumma kafarū faṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yafqahūn

63:4

۞ وَإِذَا رَأَیۡتَهُمۡ تُعۡجِبُكَ أَجۡسَامُهُمۡۖ وَإِن یَقُولُوا۟ تَسۡمَعۡ لِقَوۡلِهِمۡۖ كَأَنَّهُمۡ خُشُبࣱ مُّسَنَّدَةࣱۖ یَحۡسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَیۡحَةٍ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ هُمُ ٱلۡعَدُوُّ فَٱحۡذَرۡهُمۡۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ أَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٤

When you look at them, their appearance pleases you, and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as pieces of timber propped up, unable to stand on their own. They think that every complaint is against them. They are enemies, so beware of them. The curse of God is on them, and indeed they are deluded

wa-idhā ra-aytahum tuʿ'jibuka ajsāmuhum wa-in yaqūlū tasmaʿ liqawlihim ka-annahum khushubun musannadatun yaḥsabūna kulla ṣayḥatin ʿalayhim humu l-ʿaduwu fa-iḥ'dharhum qātalahumu l-lahu annā yu'fakūn

63:5

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ یَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ لَوَّوۡا۟ رُءُوسَهُمۡ وَرَأَیۡتَهُمۡ یَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٥

And when it is said to them, “Come, the messenger of God will pray for your forgiveness,” they turn their heads away, and you will see them turning away their faces in arrogance

wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw yastaghfir lakum rasūlu l-lahi lawwaw ruūsahum wara-aytahum yaṣuddūna wahum mus'takbirūn

63:6

سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَسۡتَغۡفَرۡتَ لَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ لَن یَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٦

It is the same for them whether you pray for their forgiveness or not, God will not forgive them. Truly God does not guide rebellious transgressors

sawāon ʿalayhim astaghfarta lahum am lam tastaghfir lahum lan yaghfira l-lahu lahum inna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīn

63:7

هُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنۡ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ یَنفَضُّوا۟ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَاۤىِٕنُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٧

They are the ones who say, “Give nothing to those who are with God's messenger until they disband.” But to God belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites understand not

humu alladhīna yaqūlūna lā tunfiqū ʿalā man ʿinda rasūli l-lahi ḥattā yanfaḍḍū walillahi khazāinu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yafqahūn

63:8

یَقُولُونَ لَىِٕن رَّجَعۡنَاۤ إِلَى ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ لَیُخۡرِجَنَّ ٱلۡأَعَزُّ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡأَذَلَّۚ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨

They say, “If we return to Medina, surely the elites will expel the meek from there.” But honor belongs to God and His messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not

yaqūlūna la-in rajaʿnā ilā l-madīnati layukh'rijanna l-aʿazu min'hā l-adhala walillahi l-ʿizatu walirasūlihi walil'mu'minīna walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yaʿlamūn

63:9

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلۡهِكُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُكُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٩

Bilal Muhammad 2018

O you who believe, do not let your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of God. If any does so, the loss is their own

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tul'hikum amwālukum walā awlādukum ʿan dhik'ri l-lahi waman yafʿal dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

63:10

وَأَنفِقُوا۟ مِن مَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَأۡتِیَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ فَیَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوۡلَاۤ أَخَّرۡتَنِیۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ قَرِیبࣲ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠

Bilal Muhammad 2018

And give something in charity out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on you before death comes to any of you and he will say, “O my Lord, why did You not give me respite for a little while? I would then have given in charity, and I would have been one of the doers of good.

wa-anfiqū min mā razaqnākum min qabli an yatiya aḥadakumu l-mawtu fayaqūla rabbi lawlā akhartanī ilā ajalin qarībin fa-aṣṣaddaqa wa-akun mina l-ṣāliḥīn

63:11

وَلَن یُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهَاۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١

But to no soul will God grant respite when the time appointed has come, and God is well acquainted with all that you do

walan yu-akhira l-lahu nafsan idhā jāa ajaluhā wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn
