The Hypocrites — Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Translation

63:1

إِذَا جَاۤءَكَ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشۡهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ یَشۡهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

When the ones who are hypocrites drew near thee. They said: We bear witness that thou art, truly, the Messenger of God. And God knows that thou art, truly, His Messenger and God bears witness that the ones who are hypocrites are ones who lie.

idhā jāaka l-munāfiqūna qālū nashhadu innaka larasūlu l-lahi wal-lahu yaʿlamu innaka larasūluhu wal-lahu yashhadu inna l-munāfiqīna lakādhibūn

63:2

ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةࣰ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَاۤءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They took their oaths to themselves as a pretext. Then, they barred from the way of God. Truly, they, how evil is what they had been doing!

ittakhadhū aymānahum junnatan faṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūn

63:3

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

That is because they believed and, again, disbelieved, so a seal was set on their hearts so they understand not.

dhālika bi-annahum āmanū thumma kafarū faṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yafqahūn

63:4

۞ وَإِذَا رَأَیۡتَهُمۡ تُعۡجِبُكَ أَجۡسَامُهُمۡۖ وَإِن یَقُولُوا۟ تَسۡمَعۡ لِقَوۡلِهِمۡۖ كَأَنَّهُمۡ خُشُبࣱ مُّسَنَّدَةࣱۖ یَحۡسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَیۡحَةٍ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ هُمُ ٱلۡعَدُوُّ فَٱحۡذَرۡهُمۡۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ أَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

When thou hast seen them, their physiques impress thee. And when they speak, thou hast heard their saying. It is as if they had been propped up timber. They assume that every Cry is against them. They are the enemy so beware of them. God took the offensive. How they are misled!

wa-idhā ra-aytahum tuʿ'jibuka ajsāmuhum wa-in yaqūlū tasmaʿ liqawlihim ka-annahum khushubun musannadatun yaḥsabūna kulla ṣayḥatin ʿalayhim humu l-ʿaduwu fa-iḥ'dharhum qātalahumu l-lahu annā yu'fakūn

63:5

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ یَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ لَوَّوۡا۟ رُءُوسَهُمۡ وَرَأَیۡتَهُمۡ یَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when it was said to them: Approach now. The Messenger of God asks forgiveness for you. They twist their heads and thou hadst seen them dissuading while they are ones who grow arrogant.

wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw yastaghfir lakum rasūlu l-lahi lawwaw ruūsahum wara-aytahum yaṣuddūna wahum mus'takbirūn

63:6

سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَسۡتَغۡفَرۡتَ لَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ لَن یَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

It is the same to them whether thou hadst asked for forgiveness for them or thou hadst not asked for forgiveness for them. God will never forgive them. Truly, God guides not the folk, the ones who disobey.

sawāon ʿalayhim astaghfarta lahum am lam tastaghfir lahum lan yaghfira l-lahu lahum inna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīn

63:7

هُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنۡ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ یَنفَضُّوا۟ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَاۤىِٕنُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They are those who say: Spend not on such ones who are with the Messenger of God until they break away. And to God belongs the treasures of the heavens and the earth but the ones who are hypocrites understand not.

humu alladhīna yaqūlūna lā tunfiqū ʿalā man ʿinda rasūli l-lahi ḥattā yanfaḍḍū walillahi khazāinu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yafqahūn

63:8

یَقُولُونَ لَىِٕن رَّجَعۡنَاۤ إِلَى ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ لَیُخۡرِجَنَّ ٱلۡأَعَزُّ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡأَذَلَّۚ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They say: If we returned to the city, certainly, would drive out the more mighty, the ones humble spirited from it. Yet to God belongs the great glory and to His Messenger and to the ones who believe. But the ones who are hypocrites know not.

yaqūlūna la-in rajaʿnā ilā l-madīnati layukh'rijanna l-aʿazu min'hā l-adhala walillahi l-ʿizatu walirasūlihi walil'mu'minīna walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yaʿlamūn

63:9

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلۡهِكُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُكُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

O those who believed! Let not your wealth divert you nor your children from the Remembrance of God. And whoever accomplishes that, then, those, they are the ones who are losers.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tul'hikum amwālukum walā awlādukum ʿan dhik'ri l-lahi waman yafʿal dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

63:10

وَأَنفِقُوا۟ مِن مَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَأۡتِیَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ فَیَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوۡلَاۤ أَخَّرۡتَنِیۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ قَرِیبࣲ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And spend of what We provided you before approaches death to any of you. Then, he will say: My Lord! If only Thou wouldst postpone it for a little term then, I would be charitable and be among the ones in accord with morality.

wa-anfiqū min mā razaqnākum min qabli an yatiya aḥadakumu l-mawtu fayaqūla rabbi lawlā akhartanī ilā ajalin qarībin fa-aṣṣaddaqa wa-akun mina l-ṣāliḥīn

63:11

وَلَن یُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهَاۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But God never postpones it for a soul when its term drew near. And God is Aware of what you do.

walan yu-akhira l-lahu nafsan idhā jāa ajaluhā wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn
