1 The Hypocrites

إِذَا جَاۤءَكَ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشۡهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ یَشۡهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١

The Study Quran

When the hypocrites come unto thee, they say, “We bear witness that thou art indeed the Messenger of God.” Yet God knows that thou art indeed His Messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are surely liars

idhā jāaka l-munāfiqūna qālū nashhadu innaka larasūlu l-lahi wal-lahu yaʿlamu innaka larasūluhu wal-lahu yashhadu inna l-munāfiqīna lakādhibūn

ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةࣰ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَاۤءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢

The Study Quran

They took their oaths as a shield and thus turned from the way of God. Evil indeed is that which they used to do

ittakhadhū aymānahum junnatan faṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūn

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٣

The Study Quran

That is because they believed, and then disbelieved; so a seal was set upon their hearts such that they comprehend not

dhālika bi-annahum āmanū thumma kafarū faṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yafqahūn

۞ وَإِذَا رَأَیۡتَهُمۡ تُعۡجِبُكَ أَجۡسَامُهُمۡۖ وَإِن یَقُولُوا۟ تَسۡمَعۡ لِقَوۡلِهِمۡۖ كَأَنَّهُمۡ خُشُبࣱ مُّسَنَّدَةࣱۖ یَحۡسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَیۡحَةٍ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ هُمُ ٱلۡعَدُوُّ فَٱحۡذَرۡهُمۡۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ أَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٤

The Study Quran

And when thou seest them, their bodies impress thee, and if they speak, thou listenest to their speech. [Yet] they are like leaning timbers. They suppose that every cry is against them. They are the enemy; so be wary of them. May God curse them! How are they perverted

wa-idhā ra-aytahum tuʿ'jibuka ajsāmuhum wa-in yaqūlū tasmaʿ liqawlihim ka-annahum khushubun musannadatun yaḥsabūna kulla ṣayḥatin ʿalayhim humu l-ʿaduwu fa-iḥ'dharhum qātalahumu l-lahu annā yu'fakūn

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ یَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ لَوَّوۡا۟ رُءُوسَهُمۡ وَرَأَیۡتَهُمۡ یَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٥

The Study Quran

And when it is said unto them, “Come! The Messenger of God will ask forgiveness for you,” they twist their heads, and thou seest them turning away in arrogance

wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw yastaghfir lakum rasūlu l-lahi lawwaw ruūsahum wara-aytahum yaṣuddūna wahum mus'takbirūn

سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَسۡتَغۡفَرۡتَ لَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ لَن یَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٦

The Study Quran

It is the same for them whether thou askest forgiveness for them or thou askest forgiveness for them not; God will never forgive them. Truly God guides not iniquitous people

sawāon ʿalayhim astaghfarta lahum am lam tastaghfir lahum lan yaghfira l-lahu lahum inna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīn

هُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنۡ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ یَنفَضُّوا۟ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَاۤىِٕنُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٧

The Study Quran

They are the ones who say, “Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God, that they may disperse.” Yet to God belong the treasuries of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites comprehend not

humu alladhīna yaqūlūna lā tunfiqū ʿalā man ʿinda rasūli l-lahi ḥattā yanfaḍḍū walillahi khazāinu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yafqahūn

یَقُولُونَ لَىِٕن رَّجَعۡنَاۤ إِلَى ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ لَیُخۡرِجَنَّ ٱلۡأَعَزُّ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡأَذَلَّۚ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨

The Study Quran

They say, “If we return to Madinah, the mightier will surely expel the weaker therefrom.” Yet unto God belongs the might and unto His Messenger and the believers, but the hypocrites know not

yaqūlūna la-in rajaʿnā ilā l-madīnati layukh'rijanna l-aʿazu min'hā l-adhala walillahi l-ʿizatu walirasūlihi walil'mu'minīna walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yaʿlamūn

2 An Exhortation

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلۡهِكُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُكُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٩

The Study Quran

O you who believe! Let neither your property nor your children divert you from the remembrance of God. Whosoever does so, it is they who are the losers

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tul'hikum amwālukum walā awlādukum ʿan dhik'ri l-lahi waman yafʿal dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

وَأَنفِقُوا۟ مِن مَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَأۡتِیَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ فَیَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوۡلَاۤ أَخَّرۡتَنِیۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ قَرِیبࣲ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠

The Study Quran

And spend of that which We have provided you before death comes upon one of you and he says, “My Lord, wouldst that Thou grant me reprieve till a term nigh, that I may give charity and be among the righteous!

wa-anfiqū min mā razaqnākum min qabli an yatiya aḥadakumu l-mawtu fayaqūla rabbi lawlā akhartanī ilā ajalin qarībin fa-aṣṣaddaqa wa-akun mina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَلَن یُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهَاۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١

The Study Quran

Yet God will not grant any soul reprieve when its term has come. And God is Aware of whatsoever you do

walan yu-akhira l-lahu nafsan idhā jāa ajaluhā wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn
