Among the Signs of Allah
Allah says:
وَمِنْ ءَايَـتِهِ
(And among His signs) -- which speak of His might and power, is the fact that He created your father Adam out of dust.
ثُمَّ إِذَآ أَنتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ
(and then -- behold you are human beings scattered!) So man's origins lie in dust, then in a despised liquid, then he is formed and becomes a clot, then a lump of flesh, then bones in the form of a human being. Then Allah clothes the bones with flesh. Then the soul is breathed into him and he can hear and see. Then he comes forth from his mother's womb, small and weak, but the longer he lives, the stronger he becomes, until he reaches the age where he can build cities and strongholds, and he travels to different lands and across the seas, earning a living and amassing wealth, and he is smart and intelligent and crafty, with ideas and opinions of his own, and each one is able to achieve great things in this world and in the Hereafter according to his individual means. Glory be to the One Who has enabled them and made it easy for them to learn all kinds of skills for earning a living, and has caused them to vary in their levels of knowledge and intellectual ability, and in how handsome or ugly, rich or poor they are, and in whether they are blessed and doomed. Allah says:
وَمِنْ ءَايَـتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِّن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ إِذَآ أَنتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ
(And among His signs is this that He created you from dust, and then -- behold you are human beings scattered!) Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Musa said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
«إِنَّ اللهَ خَلَقَ آدَمَ مِنْ قَبْضَةٍ قَبَضَهَا مِنْ جَمِيع الْأَرْضِ، فَجَاءَ بَنُو آدَمَ عَلَى قَدْرِ الْأَرْضِ، جَاءَ مِنْهُمُ الْأَبْيَضُ وَالْأَحْمَرُ وَالْأَسْوَدُ وَبَيْنَ ذَلِكَ، وَالْخَبِيثُ وَالطَّيِّبُ، وَالسَّهْلُ وَالْحَزْنُ وَبَيْنَ ذَلِك»
(Allah created Adam from a handful taken from throughout the earth. Hence the sons of Adam vary as the earth varies, so they are white and red and black and colors in between, evil and good, easy-going or difficult -- or something in between.)" This was also recorded by Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi, who said, "This Hadith is Hasan Sahih." Allah said:
وَمِنْ ءايَـتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَجاً
(And among His signs is this that He created for you wives from among yourselves,) meaning, `He created females of your own kind, to be wives for you.'
لِّتَسْكُنُواْ إِلَيْهَا
(that you may find repose in them,) This is like the Ayah,
هُوَ الَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا
(It is He Who has created you from a single person, and He has created from him his wife, in order that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her) (7:189). This refers to Hawwa'. Allah created her from Adam, from the short rib on his left. If Allah had made all of Adam's progeny male, and created the females from another kind, such as from Jinn or animals, there would never have been harmony between them and their spouses. There would have been revulsion if the spouses had been from a different kind. Out of Allah's perfect mercy He made their wives from their own kind, and created love and kindness between them. For a man stays with a woman because he loves her, or because he feels compassion towards her if they have a child together, or because she needs him to take care of her, etc.
إِنَّ فِى ذلِكَ لآيَـتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
(Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.)
And of His signs exalted be He indicating His power is that He created you in other words your origin Adam of dust then lo! you are human beings of flesh and blood spreading across the earth.
And of His signs is that He created you of dust, and then you were mortal man, spreading about. O child of Adam! If you want to know the signs and banners of God's Unity and recognize the marks of His Solitariness, open the eye of heedfulness, open up the insight of intellect, roam the world of your own soul, and gaze on the root of your own creation. You were a handful of dust, a dark makeup stuck in the darkness of your own unknowing, bewildered by the darkness of attri- butes. Then the rain of lights began to fall from the heaven of mysteries: “Then He sprinkled them with some of His light.” The dust turned into jasmine and the stone became pearls. The dense makeup became exalted by this subtle link. The dust became pure, the darkness became light. “Yes, it is We who adorn and paint. We adorn whom We will with Our light. We adorn the Garden with Our friends, We adorn Our friends with the heart, and We adorn the heart with Our light. We do this so that if they do not reach the pavilions of Our exaltedness through the carcass of their misery, they will reach Us through the ray of the prosperity of Our majesty's light.” A pir was asked, “What is the mark of that light?” He replied, “Its mark is that with that light the servant recognizes God without finding Him, loves Him without seeing Him, and turns away from his own work and the remembrance of himself toward His work and remembering Him. His ease and settledness are in His street, his secrets and joy with His friends. By day he is in the religion's work, by night in the drunkenness of certainty's tidings. ومن آيات الله الدالة على عظمته وكمال قدرته أن خلق أباكم آدم من تراب، ثم أنتم بشر تتناسلون منتشرين في الأرض، تبتغون من فضل الله.
قوله تعالى "ومن آياته أن خلق لكم من أنفسكم أزواجا" أي خلق لكم من جنسكم إناثا تكون لكم أزواجا "لتسكنوا إليها" كما قال تعالى "هو الذي خلقكم من نفس واحدة وجعل منها زوجها ليسكن إليها" يعني بذلك حواء خلقها الله من آدم من ضلعه الأقصر الأيسر. ولو أنه تعالى جعل بني آدم كلهم ذكورا وجعل إناثهم من جنس آخر من غيرهم إما من جان أو حيوان لما حصل هذا الائتلاف بينهم وبين الأزواج بل كانت تحصل نفره لو كانت الأزواج من غير الجنس ثم من تمام رحمته ببني آدم أن جعل أزواجهم من جنسهم وجعل بينهم وبينهن مودة وهي المحبة ورحمة وهي الرأفة فإن الرجل يمسك المرأة إما لمحبته لها أو لرحمة بها بأن يكون لها منه ولد أو محتاجة إليه في الإنفاق أو للألفة بينهما وغير ذلك "إن في ذلك لآيات لقوم يتفكرون".
ثم أورد - سبحانه - بعد ذلك أنواعا من الأدلة على قدرته التى لا يعجزها شئ ، فقال - تعالى - ( وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِّن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ إِذَآ أَنتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ ) .والآيات : جمع آية ، وتطلق على الآية القرآنية ، وعلى الشئ العجيب ، كما فى قوله - تعالى - : ( وَجَعَلْنَا ابن مَرْيَمَ وَأُمَّهُ آيَةً ) والمراد بها هنا : الأدلة الواضحة ، والبراهين الساطعة ، الدالة على وحدانية الله - تعالى - وقدرته .والمعنى : ومن آياته - سبحانه - الدالة على عظمته ، وعلى كمال قدرته ، أنه خلقكم من تراب ، أى : خلق أباكم آدم من تراب ، وأنتم فروع عنه .و " إذ " فى قوله : ( ثُمَّ إِذَآ أَنتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ ) هى الفجائية .أى : خلقكم بتلك الصورة البديعة من مادة التراب التى لا يرى فيها رائحة للحياة ، ثم صرتم بعد خَلْقِنا إياكم فى أطوار متعددة ، بشرا تنتشرون فى الأرض ، وتمشون فى مناكبها ، وتتقلبون فيها تارة عن طريق الزراعة ، وتارة عن طريق التجارة ، وتارة عن طريق الأسفار . . كل ذلك طلبا للرزق ، ولجمع الأموال .وعبر - سبحانه - بثم المفيدة للتراخى ، لأن انتشارهم فى الأرض لا يتأتى إلا بعد مرورهم بأطوار متعددة ، منها أطوار خلقهم فى بطون أمهاتهم ، وأطوار طفولتهم وصباهم ، إلى أن يبلغوا سن الرشد .قال الشوكانى : وإذا الفجائية وإن كانت أكثر ما تقع بعد الفاء لكنها وقعت هنا بعد ثم ، بالنسبة إلى ما يليق بهذه الحالة الخاصة ، وهى أطوار الإِنسان ، كما حكاها الله - تعالى - فى مواضع ، من كونه نطفة ، ثم مضغة ، ثم عظمها مكسوها لحما .
القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنْتَشِرُونَ (20)يقول تعالى ذكره: ومن حُججه على أنه القادر على ما يشاء أيها الناس من إنشاء وإفناء، وإيجاد وإعدام، وأن كل موجود فخلقه خلقة أبيكم من تراب، يعني بذلك خلق آدم من تراب، فوصفهم بأنه خلقهم من تراب، إذ كان ذلك فعله بأبيهم آدم كنحو الذي قد بيَّنا فيما مضى من خطاب العرب من خاطبت بما فعلت بسلفه من قولهم: فعلنا بكم وفعلنا.وقوله: (ثُمَّ إِذَا أنتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ) يقول: ثم إذا أنتم معشر ذرّية من خلقناه من تراب (بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ)، يقول: تتصرفون.وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل.* ذكر من قال ذلك:حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قَتادة (وَمِنْ آياتِهِ أنْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ) خلق آدم عليه السلام من تراب (ثُمَّ إِذَا أَنتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ) يعني: ذرّيته.
( ومن آياته أن خلقكم من تراب ) أي : خلق أصلكم يعني آدم من تراب ( ثم إذا أنتم بشر تنتشرون ) تنبسطون في الأرض .
وَمِنْ آَيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنْتَشِرُونَ (20)لما كان الاستدلال على البعث متضمناً آيات على تفرده تعالى بالتصرف ودلالته على الوحدانية انتقل من ذلك الاستدلال إلى آيات على ذلك التصرف العظيم غير ما فيه إثبات البعث تثبيتاً للمؤمنين وإعذاراً لمن أشركوا في الإلهية . وقد سبقت ست آيات على الوحدانية ، وابتدئت بكلمة { ومن آياته } تنبيهاً على اتحاد غرضها ، فهذه هي الآية الأولى ولها شبه بالاستدلال على البعث لأن خلق الناس من تراب وبث الحياة والانتشار فيهم هو ضرب من ضروب إخراج الحي من الميت ، فلذلك كانت هي الأولى في الذكر لمناسبتها لما قبلها فجعلت تخلصاً من دلائل البعث إلى دلائل عظيم القدرة . وهذه الآية كائنة في خلق جوهر الإنسان وتقويم بشريته .وتقدم كيف كان الخلق من تراب عند قوله تعالى { ولقد خلقنا الإنسان من سلالة من طين ثم جعلناه نطفة في قرار مكين } في سورة المؤمنين ( 12 ، 13 ) .فضمير النصب في خَلَقَكم } عائد إلى جميع الناس وهذا في معنى قوله تعالى في سورة الحج ( 5 ) { فإنّا خلقناكم من تراب ثم من نطفة ثم من علقة } الآية .وهذا استدلال للناس بأنفسهم لأنهم أشعرُ بها مما سواها ، والناس يعلمون أن النطف أصل الخلقة ، وهم إذا تأملوا علموا أن النطفة تتكون من الغذاء ، وأن الغذاء يتكون من نبات الأرض ، وأن نبات الأرض مشتمل على الأجزاء الترابية التي أنبتته فعلموا أنهم مخلوقون من تراب ، فبذلك استقام جعل التكوين من التراب آية للناس أي علامة على عظيم القدرة مع كونه أمراً خفياً . على أنه يمكن أن يكون الاستدلال مبنياً على ما هو شائع بين البشر أن أصل الإنسان تراب حسبما أنبأت به الأديان كلها . وبهذا التأويل يصح أيضاً أن يكون معنى { خلقكم من تراب } خلق أصلكم وهو آدم ، وأول الوجوه أظهرها . فالتراب موات لا حياة فيه وطبعه مناففٍ لطبع الحياة لأن التراب بارد يابس وذلك طبع الموت ، والحياةُ تقتضي حرارة ورطوبة فمن ذلك البارد اليابس ينشأ المخلوق الحي المدرك . وقد أشير إلى الحياة والإدراك بقوله { إذا أنتم بشر } ، وإلى التصرف والحركة بقوله { تنتشرون } ، ولما كان تمام البشرية ينشأ عن تطور التراب إلى نبات ثم إلى نطفة ثم إلى أطوار التخلق في أزمنة متتالية عطفت الجملة بحرف المهلة الدال على تراخي الزمن مع تراخي الرتبة الذي هو الأصل في عطف الجمل بحرف { ثم } .وصدرت الجملة بحرف المفاجأة لأن الكون بشراً يظهر للناس فجأة بوضع الأجنة أو خروج الفراخ من البيض ، وما بين ذلك من الأطوار التي اقتضاها حرف المهلة هي أطوار خفية غير مشاهدة؛ فكان الجمع بين حرف المهلة وحرف المفاجأة تنبيهاً على ذلك التطور العجيب . وحصل من المقارنة بين حرف المهلة وحرف المفاجأة شبه الطباق وإن كان مرجع كل من الحرفين غير مرجع الآخر .والانتشار : الظهور على الأرض والتباعد بين الناس في الأعمال قال تعالى { فانتشروا في الأرض } [ الجمعة : 10 ] .
هذا شروع في تعداد آياته الدالة على انفراده بالإلهية وكمال عظمته، ونفوذ مشيئته وقوة اقتداره وجميل صنعه وسعة رحمته وإحسانه فقال: { وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ } وذلك بخلق أصل النسل آدم عليه السلام { ثُمَّ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ بَشَرٌ تَنْتَشِرُونَ } [أي: الذي خلقكم من أصل واحد ومادة واحدة] وبثكم في أقطار الأرض [وأرجائها ففي ذلك آيات على أن الذي أنشأكم من هذا الأصل وبثكم في أقطار الأرض] هو الرب المعبود الملك المحمود والرحيم الودود الذي سيعيدكم بالبعث بعد الموت.
قوله تعالى : ومن آياته أن خلقكم من تراب أي من علامات ربوبيته ووحدانيته أن خلقكم من تراب ; أي خلق أباكم منه والفرع كالأصل ، وقد مضى بيان هذا في ( الأنعام ) . وأن في موضع رفع بالابتداء وكذا أن خلق لكم من أنفسكم أزواجا .ثم إذا أنتم بشر تنتشرون ثم أنتم عقلاء ناطقون تتصرفون فيما هو قوام معايشكم ، [ ص: 17 ] فلم يكن ليخلقكم عبثا ; ومن قدر على هذا فهو أهل للعبادة والتسبيح .
A wonderful miracle of the present world is growth and development. Here, one finds an inert, non-growing material turning into a material which is capable of growing and increasing. Here, lifeless earth, in other words, earth’s elements, undergo a change and take the shape of moving and talking human beings. On account of this, human civilization has survived for thousands of years now. This change, and that too a well-organized, proportionate and harmonious change, would not be at all possible unless it were the work of an all-powerful God. The fact is that if a man gives deep consideration to God’s creations, he will feel that the presence of God is reflected in everything.
Commentary
After narrating the incident of the war between Rum and Persia in the beginning of Surah Ar-Rum, it was declared that the cause of the misguidance of the infidels and their heedlessness towards the truth was their excessive love for material life and paying no heed to the Hereafter. After that, any possible misgiving regarding resurrection on the Dooms Day and about the rewards and punishment after reckoning was clarified from different angles. Then it was suggested that one should, at the first place, look and ponder within his Self, and then should look around and note what had happened to the people who had lived before, and what was their end. After that Allah's exclusive Omnipotence was described, in which no one is His partner. The obvious conclusion of all these facts and reasoning is that no one else but Allah is entitled to being worshipped, and what He has conveyed through His prophets about the Dooms Day, resurrection, reckoning, Paradise and Hell in the Hereafter should be believed in its totality. In the above verses six manifestations of His Omnipotence together with all-encompassing wisdom are described which are the signs of His incomparable power and wisdom. These realities are termed in these verses as "signs" which in the present context mean "signs of the divine omnipotence"
First sign of divine omnipotence
Man, the most distinguished among all creatures who is the ruler of the universe, is created from earth, which is the most inferior element among all the constituting elements of nature. Among the four well-known elements, that is water, fire, air and earth, the last named does not have the slightest sense, sensation or movement. All other elements have at least some movement, but the earth is devoid of that as well. However, this element is selected by Allah Ta’ ala for the creation of humans. Iblis (Shaitan) was misled by his arrogance as he regarded himself superior to man, since he is made of fire. What he failed to understand was that greatness and superiority is awarded by Allah Ta’ ala. He is free to award it to any one He chooses.
Creation of man from earth is obvious with reference to ‘Adam (علیہ السلام) who is the father of all mankind. Since he was created from clay, the entire mankind, being his progeny, is created indirectly from clay. Every man's creation from earth may also be explained by saying that every man or woman is created from human sperm which is constituted by different ingredients. The origin of most of these ingredients is nothing but earth.
(And of His signs) of the signs of His divine Oneness, power and prophethood of His Messenger (is this: He created you of dust) He created you of Adam and Adam is from dust, and you are his progeny, (and behold you human beings) living beings, (ranging widely) enjoying comfort on the face of the earth!
