Verse 26:42 in Context

38 فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨ fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi The sorcerers were [to be] assembled at the appointed time on a certain da 39 وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩ waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn and the people were asked 40 لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠ laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn ‘Are you all coming? We may follow the sorcerers if they win!’ 41 فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١ falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn When the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, ‘Shall we be rewarded if we win?’
42 قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢ qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn and he said, ‘Yes, and you will join my inner court.’
43 قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣ qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn Moses said to them, ‘Throw down whatever you will.’ 44 فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤ fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn They threw their ropes and staffs, saying, ‘By Pharaoh’s might, we shall be victorious.’ 45 فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥ fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn But Moses threw his staff and- lo and behold!- it swallowed up their tricker 46 فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦ fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn and the sorcerers fell down on their knees
