1 Truth of Revelation

الۤرۚ تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡحَكِیمِ ۝١

Alif. Lam. Ra. These are the Revelations included in the Book full of wisdom

alif-lam-ra til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-ḥakīm

أَكَانَ لِلنَّاسِ عَجَبًا أَنۡ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَنۡ أَنذِرِ ٱلنَّاسَ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ أَنَّ لَهُمۡ قَدَمَ صِدۡقٍ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡۗ قَالَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝٢

Does it seem strange to people that We reveal to a man from among them, saying: "Warn all humankind (of the consequences of the way they follow), and give those who believe the glad tidings that they have a sure footing with their Lord (on account of their belief, faithfulness, and righteous deeds)." (Is it because of this that) the unbelievers say: "This (man) is clearly a sorcerer?"

akāna lilnnāsi ʿajaban an awḥaynā ilā rajulin min'hum an andhiri l-nāsa wabashiri alladhīna āmanū anna lahum qadama ṣid'qin ʿinda rabbihim qāla l-kāfirūna inna hādhā lasāḥirun mubīnu

إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامࣲ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِۖ یُدَبِّرُ ٱلۡأَمۡرَۖ مَا مِن شَفِیعٍ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ إِذۡنِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٣

Surely your Lord is God, Who has created the heavens and the earth in six days, then He established Himself on the Supreme Throne, directing all affairs (as the sole Ruler of creation). There is none to intercede with God unless after He grants leave. That is God, Your Lord, so worship Him. Will you still not reflect (on this fundamental truth) and be mindful

inna rabbakumu l-lahu alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa fī sittati ayyāmin thumma is'tawā ʿalā l-ʿarshi yudabbiru l-amra mā min shafīʿin illā min baʿdi idh'nihi dhālikumu l-lahu rabbukum fa-uʿ'budūhu afalā tadhakkarūn

إِلَیۡهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ جَمِیعࣰاۖ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقًّاۚ إِنَّهُۥ یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥ لِیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَهُمۡ شَرَابࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ وَعَذَابٌ أَلِیمُۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٤

To Him you are all bound to return: a promise from God in truth (therefore certain to happen). He originates creation, then He brings it forth anew (in another world) to the end that He may reward with equity those who believe and do good, righteous deeds. Whereas, for those who disbelieve (and die as unbelievers) there is a drink of boiling water and a painful punishment because they persistently disbelieve

ilayhi marjiʿukum jamīʿan waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqan innahu yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu liyajziya alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti bil-qis'ṭi wa-alladhīna kafarū lahum sharābun min ḥamīmin waʿadhābun alīmun bimā kānū yakfurūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ ضِیَاۤءࣰ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ نُورࣰا وَقَدَّرَهُۥ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعۡلَمُوا۟ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِینَ وَٱلۡحِسَابَۚ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَ ٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ یُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥

He it is Who has made the sun a radiant, illuminating light, and the moon a light reflected, and has determined for it stations, that you might know (how to compute) the number of the years and to measure (time). God has not created that but with truth (for a definite purpose and meaningfully). He sets out in detail the signs (and proofs of the truth) for a people seeking knowledge

huwa alladhī jaʿala l-shamsa ḍiyāan wal-qamara nūran waqaddarahu manāzila litaʿlamū ʿadada l-sinīna wal-ḥisāba mā khalaqa l-lahu dhālika illā bil-ḥaqi yufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yaʿlamūn

إِنَّ فِی ٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَّقُونَ ۝٦

In the alternation of night and day (with their periods shortening and lengthening), and all that He has created in the heavens and the earth, surely there are signs (manifesting truth) for a people who keep from disobedience to Him in reverence for Him

inna fī ikh'tilāfi al-layli wal-nahāri wamā khalaqa l-lahu fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi laāyātin liqawmin yattaqūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ لِقَاۤءَنَا وَرَضُوا۟ بِٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱطۡمَأَنُّوا۟ بِهَا وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا غَـٰفِلُونَ ۝٧

Those who have no expectations to meet Us and are well-pleased with the present, worldly life and (neither looking nor seeing beyond it) are content with it, and those who are heedless of Our Revelations and Our signs (manifested to them in their inner worlds and in the outer world)

inna alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā waraḍū bil-ḥayati l-dun'yā wa-iṭ'ma-annū bihā wa-alladhīna hum ʿan āyātinā ghāfilūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَأۡوَىٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٨

Those are they whose final refuge is the Fire because of what they have been earning

ulāika mawāhumu l-nāru bimā kānū yaksibūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ یَهۡدِیهِمۡ رَبُّهُم بِإِیمَـٰنِهِمۡۖ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٩

Surely for those who believe and do good, righteous deeds, their Lord will guide them by virtue of their belief to a happy end: rivers will flow at their feet in the Gardens of bounty and blessing

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti yahdīhim rabbuhum biīmānihim tajrī min taḥtihimu l-anhāru fī jannāti l-naʿīm

دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ فِیهَا سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ ٱللَّهُمَّ وَتَحِیَّتُهُمۡ فِیهَا سَلَـٰمࣱۚ وَءَاخِرُ دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ أَنِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠

Therein their invocation will be: "All-Glorified You are, O God! (You are absolutely exalted above having any defects and doing anything wrong.)" And their greeting (to each other and from God and the angels) will be: "Peace!" And their invocation will close with "All praise and gratitude are for God, the Lord of the worlds!"

daʿwāhum fīhā sub'ḥānaka l-lahuma wataḥiyyatuhum fīhā salāmun waākhiru daʿwāhum ani l-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

2 Punishment of Rejection

۞ وَلَوۡ یُعَجِّلُ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ ٱلشَّرَّ ٱسۡتِعۡجَالَهُم بِٱلۡخَیۡرِ لَقُضِیَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ أَجَلُهُمۡۖ فَنَذَرُ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ لِقَاۤءَنَا فِی طُغۡیَـٰنِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝١١

If God were to hasten for human beings the ill (which they have earned) in the same manner as they hasten (the coming to them of what they consider to be) the good, their term would indeed have been decreed over for them. But We leave those who do not expect to encounter Us in their rebellion blindly wandering

walaw yuʿajjilu l-lahu lilnnāsi l-shara is'tiʿ'jālahum bil-khayri laquḍiya ilayhim ajaluhum fanadharu alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā fī ṭugh'yānihim yaʿmahūn

وَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ ٱلضُّرُّ دَعَانَا لِجَنۢبِهِۦۤ أَوۡ قَاعِدًا أَوۡ قَاۤىِٕمࣰا فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُ ضُرَّهُۥ مَرَّ كَأَن لَّمۡ یَدۡعُنَاۤ إِلَىٰ ضُرࣲّ مَّسَّهُۥۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ زُیِّنَ لِلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢

When affliction befalls (such) a person, he invokes Us (in every situation), lying down on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove his affliction from him, he goes his way as if he had never invoked us for an affliction that befell him. So to those wasteful ones (who have wasted their God-given faculties and committed excesses) are the things they have been doing decked out to be appealing

wa-idhā massa l-insāna l-ḍuru daʿānā lijanbihi aw qāʿidan aw qāiman falammā kashafnā ʿanhu ḍurrahu marra ka-an lam yadʿunā ilā ḍurrin massahu kadhālika zuyyina lil'mus'rifīna mā kānū yaʿmalūn

وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡقُرُونَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِیُؤۡمِنُوا۟ۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٣

Assuredly We destroyed many generations before you when they committed wrongs (in their deeds, in their measures and judgments, and in their response to the truth): the Messengers raised from among them came to them with the clear proofs of the truth, but it was plain that they would not believe. Thus do We recompense the guilty people committed to accumulating sin

walaqad ahlaknā l-qurūna min qablikum lammā ẓalamū wajāathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti wamā kānū liyu'minū kadhālika najzī l-qawma l-muj'rimīn

ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَـٰكُمۡ خَلَـٰۤىِٕفَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ لِنَنظُرَ كَیۡفَ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٤

Then We made you successors after them on the earth, so that We might behold how you act

thumma jaʿalnākum khalāifa fī l-arḍi min baʿdihim linanẓura kayfa taʿmalūn

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَاتُنَا بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ لِقَاۤءَنَا ٱئۡتِ بِقُرۡءَانٍ غَیۡرِ هَـٰذَاۤ أَوۡ بَدِّلۡهُۚ قُلۡ مَا یَكُونُ لِیۤ أَنۡ أُبَدِّلَهُۥ مِن تِلۡقَاۤىِٕ نَفۡسِیۤۖ إِنۡ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیَّۖ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ إِنۡ عَصَیۡتُ رَبِّی عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥

When Our Revelations, clear as evidence and in meaning are recited (and conveyed) to them, those who have no expectations to meet Us say (in response to Our Messenger): "Either bring a Qur’an other than this or alter it." Say: "It is not for me to alter it of my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. Indeed I fear, if I should rebel against my Lord, the punishment of an Awful Day."

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhim āyātunā bayyinātin qāla alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā i'ti biqur'ānin ghayri hādhā aw baddil'hu qul mā yakūnu lī an ubaddilahu min til'qāi nafsī in attabiʿu illā mā yūḥā ilayya innī akhāfu in ʿaṣaytu rabbī ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قُل لَّوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا تَلَوۡتُهُۥ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكُم بِهِۦۖ فَقَدۡ لَبِثۡتُ فِیكُمۡ عُمُرࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٦

Say (also): "If God had so willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have brought it to your knowledge. I lived among you a whole lifetime before it (began to be revealed to me). Will you not reason and understand?"

qul law shāa l-lahu mā talawtuhu ʿalaykum walā adrākum bihi faqad labith'tu fīkum ʿumuran min qablihi afalā taʿqilūn

فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ كَذَّبَ بِءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝١٧

Who is more in the wrong than he who fabricates falsehood in attribution to God or denies His Revelations and His signs (in the universe and in their own selves). Surely the disbelieving criminals will not prosper

faman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw kadhaba biāyātihi innahu lā yuf'liḥu l-muj'rimūn

وَیَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَضُرُّهُمۡ وَلَا یَنفَعُهُمۡ وَیَقُولُونَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ شُفَعَـٰۤؤُنَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِۚ قُلۡ أَتُنَبِّءُونَ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا لَا یَعۡلَمُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَلَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١٨

They worship, apart from God, things or beings that can neither harm nor benefit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with God." Say: "Would you inform God of something in the heavens or the earth that He does not know? All-Glorified is He, and absolutely exalted above all that they associate with Him."

wayaʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi mā lā yaḍurruhum walā yanfaʿuhum wayaqūlūna hāulāi shufaʿāunā ʿinda l-lahi qul atunabbiūna l-laha bimā lā yaʿlamu fī l-samāwāti walā fī l-arḍi sub'ḥānahu wataʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

وَمَا كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ إِلَّاۤ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ فَٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةࣱ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ فِیمَا فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٩

Humankind (in the beginning) were but one community following one single way but later they differed and began following different ways. Had it not been for a decree already issued by your Lord (postponing the final, decisive judgment until an appointed term), it would indeed have been judged between them in respect of all that they differ on

wamā kāna l-nāsu illā ummatan wāḥidatan fa-ikh'talafū walawlā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika laquḍiya baynahum fīmā fīhi yakhtalifūn

وَیَقُولُونَ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۖ فَقُلۡ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡغَیۡبُ لِلَّهِ فَٱنتَظِرُوۤا۟ إِنِّی مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُنتَظِرِینَ ۝٢٠

They say: "Why isn’t a miraculous sign (of a different sort) sent down on him from his Lord?" Say, then: "The Unseen belongs to God alone (He does whatever He wills and only He knows what the future will bring): therefore, wait and see, indeed I too am with you among those who wait."

wayaqūlūna lawlā unzila ʿalayhi āyatun min rabbihi faqul innamā l-ghaybu lillahi fa-intaẓirū innī maʿakum mina l-muntaẓirīn

3 Merciful Dealing

وَإِذَاۤ أَذَقۡنَا ٱلنَّاسَ رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ ضَرَّاۤءَ مَسَّتۡهُمۡ إِذَا لَهُم مَّكۡرࣱ فِیۤ ءَایَاتِنَاۚ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ أَسۡرَعُ مَكۡرًاۚ إِنَّ رُسُلَنَا یَكۡتُبُونَ مَا تَمۡكُرُونَ ۝٢١

Whenever We let the (unbelieving) people taste an act of grace after a hardship which has visited them, they at once contrive some plot against Our Revelations. Say: "God is more swift in enforcing His will (and making any plot rebound on those who conceived it)." Surely Our (heavenly) envoys (angels) are recording what they are devising

wa-idhā adhaqnā l-nāsa raḥmatan min baʿdi ḍarrāa massathum idhā lahum makrun fī āyātinā quli l-lahu asraʿu makran inna rusulanā yaktubūna mā tamkurūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُسَیِّرُكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا كُنتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَجَرَیۡنَ بِهِم بِرِیحࣲ طَیِّبَةࣲ وَفَرِحُوا۟ بِهَا جَاۤءَتۡهَا رِیحٌ عَاصِفࣱ وَجَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡجُ مِن كُلِّ مَكَانࣲ وَظَنُّوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ أُحِیطَ بِهِمۡ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَ لَىِٕنۡ أَنجَیۡتَنَا مِنۡ هَـٰذِهِۦ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝٢٢

He it is Who conveys you on the land and the sea. And when you are in the ship, and the ships run with their voyagers with a fair breeze, and they rejoice in it, there comes upon them a tempest, and waves surge towards them from all sides, so that they are sure that they are encompassed (by death with no way out), they call upon God, sincerely believing in Him alone (as the only Deity, Lord, and Sovereign): "If You save us from this, we will most certainly be among the thankful."

huwa alladhī yusayyirukum fī l-bari wal-baḥri ḥattā idhā kuntum fī l-ful'ki wajarayna bihim birīḥin ṭayyibatin wafariḥū bihā jāathā rīḥun ʿāṣifun wajāahumu l-mawju min kulli makānin waẓannū annahum uḥīṭa bihim daʿawū l-laha mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna la-in anjaytanā min hādhihi lanakūnanna mina l-shākirīn

فَلَمَّاۤ أَنجَىٰهُمۡ إِذَا هُمۡ یَبۡغُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّۗ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّمَا بَغۡیُكُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِكُمۖ مَّتَـٰعَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَنُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٣

But when He has saved them, they behave rebelliously on earth, offending against all right. O humankind! Your rebellion is only against yourselves. (What you seek and get by all your offenses is only) the enjoyment of the present, worldly life, thereafter to Us is your return, then We will make you understand what you were doing (and call you to account)

falammā anjāhum idhā hum yabghūna fī l-arḍi bighayri l-ḥaqi yāayyuhā l-nāsu innamā baghyukum ʿalā anfusikum matāʿa l-ḥayati l-dun'yā thumma ilaynā marjiʿukum fanunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا كَمَاۤءٍ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَٱخۡتَلَطَ بِهِۦ نَبَاتُ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِمَّا یَأۡكُلُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمُ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَخَذَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ زُخۡرُفَهَا وَٱزَّیَّنَتۡ وَظَنَّ أَهۡلُهَاۤ أَنَّهُمۡ قَـٰدِرُونَ عَلَیۡهَاۤ أَتَىٰهَاۤ أَمۡرُنَا لَیۡلًا أَوۡ نَهَارࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهَا حَصِیدࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ تَغۡنَ بِٱلۡأَمۡسِۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٤

The present, worldly life is like this: We send down water from the sky, and the earth’s vegetation, of which humans and animals eat, mingles with it, until, when the earth has taken on her ornaments and has been embellished, and its inhabitants suppose that they are its masters with a free hand over the earth, Our command comes upon it by night or day unexpectedly, and We cause it to become like a field mown down, as if it had not flourished the previous day. Thus We set out in detail the signs (the signposts of Our way and the relevant commands and guidance included in the Qur’an) for a people who reflect (on them and draw the necessary lesson)

innamā mathalu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā kamāin anzalnāhu mina l-samāi fa-ikh'talaṭa bihi nabātu l-arḍi mimmā yakulu l-nāsu wal-anʿāmu ḥattā idhā akhadhati l-arḍu zukh'rufahā wa-izzayyanat waẓanna ahluhā annahum qādirūna ʿalayhā atāhā amrunā laylan aw nahāran fajaʿalnāhā ḥaṣīdan ka-an lam taghna bil-amsi kadhālika nufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَٱللَّهُ یَدۡعُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ دَارِ ٱلسَّلَـٰمِ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٢٥

And God invites to the Abode of Peace (where they will enjoy perfect bliss, peace, and safety,) and He guides whomever He wills to a Straight Path

wal-lahu yadʿū ilā dāri l-salāmi wayahdī man yashāu ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

۞ لِّلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ وَزِیَادَةࣱۖ وَلَا یَرۡهَقُ وُجُوهَهُمۡ قَتَرࣱ وَلَا ذِلَّةٌۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٢٦

For those who do good, aware that God is seeing them is the best (of the rewards that God has promised for good deeds), and still more. Neither stain nor ignominy will cover their faces. They are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein

lilladhīna aḥsanū l-ḥus'nā waziyādatun walā yarhaqu wujūhahum qatarun walā dhillatun ulāika aṣḥābu l-janati hum fīhā khālidūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَسَبُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ جَزَاۤءُ سَیِّئَةِۭ بِمِثۡلِهَا وَتَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۖ مَّا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنۡ عَاصِمࣲۖ كَأَنَّمَاۤ أُغۡشِیَتۡ وُجُوهُهُمۡ قِطَعࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ مُظۡلِمًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٢٧

And for those who have earned evil deeds, the recompense of an evil deed will be the like of it; and ignominy will cover them – nor will they have anyone to defend them against God – it is as though their faces were veiled with patches of darkest night. Those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein

wa-alladhīna kasabū l-sayiāti jazāu sayyi-atin bimith'lihā watarhaquhum dhillatun mā lahum mina l-lahi min ʿāṣimin ka-annamā ugh'shiyat wujūhuhum qiṭaʿan mina al-layli muẓ'liman ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

وَیَوۡمَ نَحۡشُرُهُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ مَكَانَكُمۡ أَنتُمۡ وَشُرَكَاۤؤُكُمۡۚ فَزَیَّلۡنَا بَیۡنَهُمۡۖ وَقَالَ شُرَكَاۤؤُهُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ إِیَّانَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٨

On that Day We will raise them all to life and gather them all together, and then We will order those who associated partners with God: "Get to your place, you and your (so-called) associates (of God)!" So did We distinguish between them and the believers, and separate them from their associates. Their associates say to them: "It was not us that you worshipped

wayawma naḥshuruhum jamīʿan thumma naqūlu lilladhīna ashrakū makānakum antum washurakāukum fazayyalnā baynahum waqāla shurakāuhum mā kuntum iyyānā taʿbudūn

فَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِیدَۢا بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَكُمۡ إِن كُنَّا عَنۡ عِبَادَتِكُمۡ لَغَـٰفِلِینَ ۝٢٩

"God is sufficient as a witness between us and you: we were certainly unaware of your worshipping (us)."

fakafā bil-lahi shahīdan baynanā wabaynakum in kunnā ʿan ʿibādatikum laghāfilīn

هُنَالِكَ تَبۡلُوا۟ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّاۤ أَسۡلَفَتۡۚ وَرُدُّوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَوۡلَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡحَقِّۖ وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٣٠

There every soul will experience what it did before (in the world). They have been returned to God, their true Owner and Master; and those that they fabricated to worship besides God have failed them

hunālika tablū kullu nafsin mā aslafat waruddū ilā l-lahi mawlāhumu l-ḥaqi waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn

4 Uniqueness of Divine Gifts

قُلۡ مَن یَرۡزُقُكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَمَّن یَمۡلِكُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ وَمَن یُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡحَیَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَیِّتِ وَیُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡمَیِّتَ مِنَ ٱلۡحَیِّ وَمَن یُدَبِّرُ ٱلۡأَمۡرَۚ فَسَیَقُولُونَ ٱللَّهُۚ فَقُلۡ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝٣١

Say: "Who is it that provides for you from heaven and earth, or Who is it that possesses full power over (your) hearing and eyes, or Who is it that brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living, and Who directs the whole affair (the universe)?" They will say, "It is God." Then, say: "Will you not then keep your duty to him in reverence for Him and in fear of His punishment?"

qul man yarzuqukum mina l-samāi wal-arḍi amman yamliku l-samʿa wal-abṣāra waman yukh'riju l-ḥaya mina l-mayiti wayukh'riju l-mayita mina l-ḥayi waman yudabbiru l-amra fasayaqūlūna l-lahu faqul afalā tattaqūn

فَذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّۖ فَمَاذَا بَعۡدَ ٱلۡحَقِّ إِلَّا ٱلضَّلَـٰلُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُصۡرَفُونَ ۝٣٢

That is God (Who does all these), Your rightful Lord, the Absolute Truth and Ever-Constant. What is there, after the truth, but error? Then, how are you turned about (to different ways, removed from the Straight Path)

fadhālikumu l-lahu rabbukumu l-ḥaqu famādhā baʿda l-ḥaqi illā l-ḍalālu fa-annā tuṣ'rafūn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ حَقَّتۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ فَسَقُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٣٣

Thus has the word of your Lord proved true with regard to those who transgress: that they will not believe

kadhālika ḥaqqat kalimatu rabbika ʿalā alladhīna fasaqū annahum lā yu'minūn

قُلۡ هَلۡ مِن شُرَكَاۤىِٕكُم مَّن یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥۚ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٣٤

Say: "Is there any of your (so-called) associates (of God) who originates creation and then reproduces it, and will bring it forth anew (in another world)?" Say: "God originates creation and then reproduces it, and He will bring it forth anew. How then are you turned away from the truth and make false claims

qul hal min shurakāikum man yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu quli l-lahu yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu fa-annā tu'fakūn

قُلۡ هَلۡ مِن شُرَكَاۤىِٕكُم مَّن یَهۡدِیۤ إِلَى ٱلۡحَقِّۚ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یَهۡدِی لِلۡحَقِّۗ أَفَمَن یَهۡدِیۤ إِلَى ٱلۡحَقِّ أَحَقُّ أَن یُتَّبَعَ أَمَّن لَّا یَهِدِّیۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن یُهۡدَىٰۖ فَمَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٣٥

Say: "Is there any of your (so-called) associates (of God) who guides to the truth?" Say: "God alone guides to the truth. Which, then, is worthy to be followed: He Who guides to the truth or he who cannot find the true way unless he is guided? What, then, is the matter with you, and how do you judge (so wrongly)?"

qul hal min shurakāikum man yahdī ilā l-ḥaqi quli l-lahu yahdī lil'ḥaqqi afaman yahdī ilā l-ḥaqi aḥaqqu an yuttabaʿa amman lā yahiddī illā an yuh'dā famā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn

وَمَا یَتَّبِعُ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ إِلَّا ظَنًّاۚ إِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا یُغۡنِی مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَیۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِمَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٣٦

Most of them follow only conjecture. Surely conjecture can never substitute for anything of the truth. God surely has full knowledge of all that they do

wamā yattabiʿu aktharuhum illā ẓannan inna l-ẓana lā yugh'nī mina l-ḥaqi shayan inna l-laha ʿalīmun bimā yafʿalūn

وَمَا كَانَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ أَن یُفۡتَرَىٰ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِن تَصۡدِیقَ ٱلَّذِی بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡهِ وَتَفۡصِیلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهِ مِن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٣٧

And this Qur’an is not such that it could possibly be fabricated by one in attribution to God, but it is a (Divine Book) confirming (the Divine origin of and the truths that are still contained by) the Revelations prior to it, and an explanation of the Essence of all Divine Books – wherein there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds

wamā kāna hādhā l-qur'ānu an yuf'tarā min dūni l-lahi walākin taṣdīqa alladhī bayna yadayhi watafṣīla l-kitābi lā rayba fīhi min rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۖ قُلۡ فَأۡتُوا۟ بِسُورَةࣲ مِّثۡلِهِۦ وَٱدۡعُوا۟ مَنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣٨

Or do they say that he (the Messenger) has fabricated it? Say: "(If it is possible for a mortal to fabricate it) then produce a surah like it and call for help on anyone you can, apart from God, if you are truthful (in your doubt and the claim you base upon it)."

am yaqūlūna if'tarāhu qul fatū bisūratin mith'lihi wa-id'ʿū mani is'taṭaʿtum min dūni l-lahi in kuntum ṣādiqīn

بَلۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِمَا لَمۡ یُحِیطُوا۟ بِعِلۡمِهِۦ وَلَمَّا یَأۡتِهِمۡ تَأۡوِیلُهُۥۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٣٩

No (they are not truthful in their doubt and claim), but they have denied a thing (the Qur’an) whose knowledge they could not encompass and whose exposition (through the fulfillment of its promises and threats) has not reached them. Even so did those who were before them deny (the Books sent to them). So look! how was the outcome for the wrong-doers (who judged and acted wrongly)

bal kadhabū bimā lam yuḥīṭū biʿil'mihi walammā yatihim tawīluhu kadhālika kadhaba alladhīna min qablihim fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-ẓālimīn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یُؤۡمِنُ بِهِۦ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن لَّا یُؤۡمِنُ بِهِۦۚ وَرَبُّكَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٤٠

Among them (the people of Makkah) there are such as have believed and will believe in it, just as among them there are such as have not believed and will not believe in it. Your Lord has full knowledge of those who provoke disorder and corruption

wamin'hum man yu'minu bihi wamin'hum man lā yu'minu bihi warabbuka aʿlamu bil-muf'sidīn

5 Reprobates' Punishment

وَإِن كَذَّبُوكَ فَقُل لِّی عَمَلِی وَلَكُمۡ عَمَلُكُمۡۖ أَنتُم بَرِیۤءُونَ مِمَّاۤ أَعۡمَلُ وَأَنَا۠ بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٤١

If (O Messenger) they continue to deny you (regarding the Message you bring), say: "To me are accounted my deeds, and to you, your deeds. You are quit of all that I do, and I am quit of all that you do."

wa-in kadhabūka faqul lī ʿamalī walakum ʿamalukum antum barīūna mimmā aʿmalu wa-anā barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَسۡتَمِعُونَ إِلَیۡكَۚ أَفَأَنتَ تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ وَلَوۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤٢

Among them are such as come to listen to you, but how can you make the deaf hear, if they do not use their reason (to make sense of it)

wamin'hum man yastamiʿūna ilayka afa-anta tus'miʿu l-ṣuma walaw kānū lā yaʿqilūn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَنظُرُ إِلَیۡكَۚ أَفَأَنتَ تَهۡدِی ٱلۡعُمۡیَ وَلَوۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٤٣

Among them are such as look towards you, but how can you guide the blind (to the right way), if they are lacking the power of (in)sight

wamin'hum man yanẓuru ilayka afa-anta tahdī l-ʿum'ya walaw kānū lā yub'ṣirūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَظۡلِمُ ٱلنَّاسَ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٤٤

Surely God does not wrong humankind in anything, but humankind wrong their own selves

inna l-laha lā yaẓlimu l-nāsa shayan walākinna l-nāsa anfusahum yaẓlimūn

وَیَوۡمَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡ كَأَن لَّمۡ یَلۡبَثُوۤا۟ إِلَّا سَاعَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلنَّهَارِ یَتَعَارَفُونَ بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ قَدۡ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَاۤءِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهۡتَدِینَ ۝٤٥

On the Day when God will raise to life and gather them together, it will seem to them that they had not tarried in the world but a short while of the day, knowing one another. Assuredly, those who deny (the truth) that they must encounter God have ruined themselves and have never been guided

wayawma yaḥshuruhum ka-an lam yalbathū illā sāʿatan mina l-nahāri yataʿārafūna baynahum qad khasira alladhīna kadhabū biliqāi l-lahi wamā kānū muh'tadīn

وَإِمَّا نُرِیَنَّكَ بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی نَعِدُهُمۡ أَوۡ نَتَوَفَّیَنَّكَ فَإِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ ثُمَّ ٱللَّهُ شَهِیدٌ عَلَىٰ مَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٤٦

Whether We let you (O Messenger) witness the fulfillment of some of what We have promised them, or We cause you to die (before it befalls them), still to Us is their return. And God is witness to all that they do

wa-immā nuriyannaka baʿḍa alladhī naʿiduhum aw natawaffayannaka fa-ilaynā marjiʿuhum thumma l-lahu shahīdun ʿalā mā yafʿalūn

وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ رَّسُولࣱۖ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ رَسُولُهُمۡ قُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُم بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٤٧

Every community has its Messenger: when their Messenger comes, (some believe in him and the others not) and it is judged between them with absolute justice, and they are not wronged

walikulli ummatin rasūlun fa-idhā jāa rasūluhum quḍiya baynahum bil-qis'ṭi wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

وَیَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡوَعۡدُ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٤٨

And they say: "When will this promise be fulfilled if you (O believers) are truthful?"

wayaqūlūna matā hādhā l-waʿdu in kuntum ṣādiqīn

قُل لَّاۤ أَمۡلِكُ لِنَفۡسِی ضَرࣰّا وَلَا نَفۡعًا إِلَّا مَا شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۗ لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌۚ إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهُمۡ فَلَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ سَاعَةࣰ وَلَا یَسۡتَقۡدِمُونَ ۝٤٩

Say (O Messenger): "I have no power to harm or benefit myself, except by God’s will. For every community there is an appointed term; and when the end of the term falls in, they can neither delay it by any period of time, however short, nor can they hasten it."

qul lā amliku linafsī ḍarran walā nafʿan illā mā shāa l-lahu likulli ummatin ajalun idhā jāa ajaluhum falā yastakhirūna sāʿatan walā yastaqdimūn

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِنۡ أَتَىٰكُمۡ عَذَابُهُۥ بَیَـٰتًا أَوۡ نَهَارࣰا مَّاذَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُ مِنۡهُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٥٠

Say: "Have you ever considered: what (could you do) if God’s punishment should come to you by night (unexpectedly) or by day (and you saw it come)? What do the disbelieving criminals have in prospect that they wish it to be hastened?"

qul ara-aytum in atākum ʿadhābuhu bayātan aw nahāran mādhā yastaʿjilu min'hu l-muj'rimūn

أَثُمَّ إِذَا مَا وَقَعَ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦۤۚ ءَاۤلۡءَـٰنَ وَقَدۡ كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٥١

What! Is it only when it has come to pass that you will believe in it? (That day it will be said to you:) "What? (Do you believe in it) now, after you had (in your contemptuous unbelief) wished it to be hastened?"

athumma idhā mā waqaʿa āmantum bihi āl'āna waqad kuntum bihi tastaʿjilūn

ثُمَّ قِیلَ لِلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ هَلۡ تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٥٢

Then it will be said to those who wronged (themselves through unbelief and wrong judgments): "Taste the punishment everlasting! Are you recompensed for anything other than what you used to earn?"

thumma qīla lilladhīna ẓalamū dhūqū ʿadhāba l-khul'di hal tuj'zawna illā bimā kuntum taksibūn

۞ وَیَسۡتَنۢبِءُونَكَ أَحَقٌّ هُوَۖ قُلۡ إِی وَرَبِّیۤ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقࣱّۖ وَمَاۤ أَنتُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ ۝٥٣

They ask you, "Is it true?" Say: "Yes, by my Lord, it is surely true; and you cannot evade it."

wayastanbiūnaka aḥaqqun huwa qul ī warabbī innahu laḥaqqun wamā antum bimuʿ'jizīn

6 Mercy takes Precedence of Punishment

وَلَوۡ أَنَّ لِكُلِّ نَفۡسࣲ ظَلَمَتۡ مَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَٱفۡتَدَتۡ بِهِۦۗ وَأَسَرُّوا۟ ٱلنَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَأَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَۖ وَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُم بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٤

If every soul that has committed wrong (through unbelief and thereby wronged itself) possessed all that is on the earth, it would surely offer that as ransom (to be saved from the punishment); and when they see the punishment, they will even be unable to express their remorse. It is judged between them in equity, and they are not wronged

walaw anna likulli nafsin ẓalamat mā fī l-arḍi la-if'tadat bihi wa-asarrū l-nadāmata lammā ra-awū l-ʿadhāba waquḍiya baynahum bil-qis'ṭi wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

أَلَاۤ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٥

Know well that to God belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth. Know well that God’s promise is surely true, but most of them do not know

alā inna lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi alā inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun walākinna aktharahum lā yaʿlamūn

هُوَ یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٥٦

He gives life and causes to die, and you are on the way to return to Him

huwa yuḥ'yī wayumītu wa-ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡكُم مَّوۡعِظَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَشِفَاۤءࣱ لِّمَا فِی ٱلصُّدُورِ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣱ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥٧

O humankind! There has come to you an instruction from your Lord, and a cure for what (of sickness or doubt) is in the breasts, and guidance and mercy for the believers

yāayyuhā l-nāsu qad jāatkum mawʿiẓatun min rabbikum washifāon limā fī l-ṣudūri wahudan waraḥmatun lil'mu'minīn

قُلۡ بِفَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِرَحۡمَتِهِۦ فَبِذَ ٰلِكَ فَلۡیَفۡرَحُوا۟ هُوَ خَیۡرࣱ مِّمَّا یَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٥٨

Say: "In the grace and bounty of God and in His mercy – in this, then, let them rejoice. That is better than what they amass (of worldly goods and riches)."

qul bifaḍli l-lahi wabiraḥmatihi fabidhālika falyafraḥū huwa khayrun mimmā yajmaʿūn

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُم مَّاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُم مِّن رِّزۡقࣲ فَجَعَلۡتُم مِّنۡهُ حَرَامࣰا وَحَلَـٰلࣰا قُلۡ ءَاۤللَّهُ أَذِنَ لَكُمۡۖ أَمۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٥٩

Say: "Have you considered the provision God has sent down on you, and you have (of your own accord, at your own whim) made some of it lawful and some of it unlawful?" Say: "Has God given you leave, or do you (make laws of your own accord and) attribute to God falsely

qul ara-aytum mā anzala l-lahu lakum min riz'qin fajaʿaltum min'hu ḥarāman waḥalālan qul āllahu adhina lakum am ʿalā l-lahi taftarūn

وَمَا ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَذُو فَضۡلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٦٠

What do those who falsely attribute (their own inventions) to God think will be (their situation) on the Day of Resurrection? Indeed God has grace and bounty for humankind, but most of them do not give thanks

wamā ẓannu alladhīna yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba yawma l-qiyāmati inna l-laha ladhū faḍlin ʿalā l-nāsi walākinna aktharahum lā yashkurūn

7 Good News for Faithful

وَمَا تَكُونُ فِی شَأۡنࣲ وَمَا تَتۡلُوا۟ مِنۡهُ مِن قُرۡءَانࣲ وَلَا تَعۡمَلُونَ مِنۡ عَمَلٍ إِلَّا كُنَّا عَلَیۡكُمۡ شُهُودًا إِذۡ تُفِیضُونَ فِیهِۚ وَمَا یَعۡزُبُ عَن رَّبِّكَ مِن مِّثۡقَالِ ذَرَّةࣲ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَلَاۤ أَصۡغَرَ مِن ذَ ٰلِكَ وَلَاۤ أَكۡبَرَ إِلَّا فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٦١

Whatever your preoccupation (O Messenger), and whatever discourse from Him in this (Qur’an) you may be reciting, and whatever work you (O people) may be doing, We are certainly witness over you while you are engaged in it. Not an atom’s weight of whatever there is in the earth or in the heaven escapes your Lord, nor is there anything smaller than that, or greater, but it is (recorded) in a Manifest Book

wamā takūnu fī shanin wamā tatlū min'hu min qur'ānin walā taʿmalūna min ʿamalin illā kunnā ʿalaykum shuhūdan idh tufīḍūna fīhi wamā yaʿzubu ʿan rabbika min mith'qāli dharratin fī l-arḍi walā fī l-samāi walā aṣghara min dhālika walā akbara illā fī kitābin mubīni

أَلَاۤ إِنَّ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ ٱللَّهِ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٦٢

Know well that the friends (saintly servants) of God – they will have no fear (both in this world and the next, for they will always find My help and support with them), nor will they grieve

alā inna awliyāa l-lahi lā khawfun ʿalayhim walā hum yaḥzanūn

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ یَتَّقُونَ ۝٦٣

They are those who believe and keep from disobedience to God in reverence for Him and piety

alladhīna āmanū wakānū yattaqūn

لَهُمُ ٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَفِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ لَا تَبۡدِیلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٤

For them is the glad tiding (of prosperity) in the life of this world and in the Hereafter. No change can there be in God’s decrees. That indeed is the supreme triumph

lahumu l-bush'rā fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wafī l-ākhirati lā tabdīla likalimāti l-lahi dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

وَلَا یَحۡزُنكَ قَوۡلُهُمۡۘ إِنَّ ٱلۡعِزَّةَ لِلَّهِ جَمِیعًاۚ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٦٥

Do not let their sayings grieve you (O Messenger). Might and glory belong to God entirely. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing

walā yaḥzunka qawluhum inna l-ʿizata lillahi jamīʿan huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

أَلَاۤ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَمَا یَتَّبِعُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ شُرَكَاۤءَۚ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَخۡرُصُونَ ۝٦٦

Know well that to God belongs whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth (His creatures and servants). Those who invoke, apart from God, (do not do so because they really have found deities and lords that can be partners with God in His Divinity and Lordship, and so) follow those partners. They do but follow only conjecture (not authoritative knowledge), and they do nothing except making up suppositions

alā inna lillahi man fī l-samāwāti waman fī l-arḍi wamā yattabiʿu alladhīna yadʿūna min dūni l-lahi shurakāa in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wa-in hum illā yakhruṣūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ لِتَسۡكُنُوا۟ فِیهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبۡصِرًاۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٦٧

It is He Who has made for you the night so that you may rest in it, and the day, sight-giving (for you to work in). Surely in this are signs (manifesting the truth) for people who hear and pay heed (to God’s Revelations, and view things and events in their light)

huwa alladhī jaʿala lakumu al-layla litaskunū fīhi wal-nahāra mub'ṣiran inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yasmaʿūn

قَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدࣰاۗ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥۖ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِیُّۖ لَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنۡ عِندَكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭ بِهَـٰذَاۤۚ أَتَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٨

They (the polytheists) assert that God has taken to Himself a child. All-Glorified is He; He is Self-Sufficient (beyond any need of anything). To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. You have no authority, nor evidence, for this (assertion). Are you, then, saying things about God that you do not know (anything about)

qālū ittakhadha l-lahu waladan sub'ḥānahu huwa l-ghaniyu lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi in ʿindakum min sul'ṭānin bihādhā ataqūlūna ʿalā l-lahi mā lā taʿlamūn

قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ لَا یُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٦٩

Say: "Surely those who fabricate falsehood in attribution to God will never prosper."

qul inna alladhīna yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba lā yuf'liḥūn

مَتَـٰعࣱ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا ثُمَّ إِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ ثُمَّ نُذِیقُهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلشَّدِیدَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٧٠

A brief enjoyment in the world; then to Us is their return, and then We will make them taste the severe punishment because they habitually disbelieved (in whatever truth was conveyed to them in God’s Name)

matāʿun fī l-dun'yā thumma ilaynā marjiʿuhum thumma nudhīquhumu l-ʿadhāba l-shadīda bimā kānū yakfurūn

8 Noah and Moses

۞ وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ نُوحٍ إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَیۡكُم مَّقَامِی وَتَذۡكِیرِی بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلۡتُ فَأَجۡمِعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَكُمۡ وَشُرَكَاۤءَكُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا یَكُنۡ أَمۡرُكُمۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡ غُمَّةࣰ ثُمَّ ٱقۡضُوۤا۟ إِلَیَّ وَلَا تُنظِرُونِ ۝٧١

Relate to them the exemplary history of Noah when he said to his people: "O my people! If my presence (among you) and my reminding (you) by God’s Revelations are offensive to you – well, in God have I put my trust. So, coming together, decide upon your course of action, and (call to your aid) your (so-called) associates of God, then let not your affair be a worry to you, and then carry out against me (whatever you have decided), and give me no respite

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a nūḥin idh qāla liqawmihi yāqawmi in kāna kabura ʿalaykum maqāmī watadhkīrī biāyāti l-lahi faʿalā l-lahi tawakkaltu fa-ajmiʿū amrakum washurakāakum thumma lā yakun amrukum ʿalaykum ghummatan thumma iq'ḍū ilayya walā tunẓirūn

فَإِن تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ فَمَا سَأَلۡتُكُم مِّنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِۖ وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٧٢

"Then if you turn away (from the Message that I convey to you), then (know that it will cause me no loss, just as your accepting it will gain me nothing) I ask you for no wage; my wage is only due from God, and I have been commanded to be of the Muslims (those who have submitted to Him)."

fa-in tawallaytum famā sa-altukum min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā l-lahi wa-umir'tu an akūna mina l-mus'limīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ خَلَـٰۤىِٕفَ وَأَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝٧٣

And yet they denied him, and so We saved him and all who were with him in the Ark, and made them successors (to inherit the earth), while We caused to drown those who denied Our Revelations and all other signs (pointing to Our Existence and Unity).Look, then, how was the outcome for those who were warned (but never paid heed)

fakadhabūhu fanajjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki wajaʿalnāhum khalāifa wa-aghraqnā alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mundharīn

ثُمَّ بَعَثۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ رُسُلًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِمۡ فَجَاۤءُوهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِیُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِمَا كَذَّبُوا۟ بِهِۦ مِن قَبۡلُۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَطۡبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدِینَ ۝٧٤

Then, after him, We sent forth Messengers to their people; and they came to them with the clear signs of the truth but they would not believe in that which they used to deny before. Thus do We impress a seal on the hearts of those who exceed the bounds

thumma baʿathnā min baʿdihi rusulan ilā qawmihim fajāūhum bil-bayināti famā kānū liyu'minū bimā kadhabū bihi min qablu kadhālika naṭbaʿu ʿalā qulūbi l-muʿ'tadīn

ثُمَّ بَعَثۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِم مُّوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوۡمࣰا مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٧٥

Then, after them, We sent forth Moses and Aaron to the Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our signs (miracles to support them), but they grew arrogant (in the face of those signs), and (demonstrated that) they were a guilty people committed to accumulating sins

thumma baʿathnā min baʿdihim mūsā wahārūna ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi biāyātinā fa-is'takbarū wakānū qawman muj'rimīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِنۡ عِندِنَا قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٧٦

When the truth came to them from Us, they said: "Surely this is clearly nothing but sorcery."

falammā jāahumu l-ḥaqu min ʿindinā qālū inna hādhā lasiḥ'run mubīnu

قَالَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَتَقُولُونَ لِلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاۤءَكُمۡۖ أَسِحۡرٌ هَـٰذَا وَلَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلسَّـٰحِرُونَ ۝٧٧

Moses said: "Do you speak of the truth like this when it has come to you? Is this sorcery? But sorcerers do not prosper."

qāla mūsā ataqūlūna lil'ḥaqqi lammā jāakum asiḥ'run hādhā walā yuf'liḥu l-sāḥirūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَجِئۡتَنَا لِتَلۡفِتَنَا عَمَّا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَنَا وَتَكُونَ لَكُمَا ٱلۡكِبۡرِیَاۤءُ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا نَحۡنُ لَكُمَا بِمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٧٨

They said: "Have you come to us to turn us away from what we found our forefathers following, and that high authority in this land may belong to you two? Never will we believe in you two!"

qālū aji'tanā litalfitanā ʿammā wajadnā ʿalayhi ābāanā watakūna lakumā l-kib'riyāu fī l-arḍi wamā naḥnu lakumā bimu'minīn

وَقَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ٱئۡتُونِی بِكُلِّ سَـٰحِرٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٧٩

And the Pharaoh said: "Bring me every learned, skillful sorcerer!"

waqāla fir'ʿawnu i'tūnī bikulli sāḥirin ʿalīmi

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٨٠

When the sorcerers came, Moses said to them: "Throw down what you will throw."

falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn

فَلَمَّاۤ أَلۡقَوۡا۟ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ مَا جِئۡتُم بِهِ ٱلسِّحۡرُۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَیُبۡطِلُهُۥۤ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُصۡلِحُ عَمَلَ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٨١

When they had thrown (whatever they had in their hands and produced a mighty sorcery), Moses said: "What you have brought is but sorcery. Surely God will bring it to nothing and prove it false. God never validates and sets right the work of those who cause disorder and corruption

falammā alqaw qāla mūsā mā ji'tum bihi l-siḥ'ru inna l-laha sayub'ṭiluhu inna l-laha lā yuṣ'liḥu ʿamala l-muf'sidīn

وَیُحِقُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡحَقَّ بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٨٢

"And God proves by His decrees the truth to be true and makes it triumph, however hateful this is to the criminals."

wayuḥiqqu l-lahu l-ḥaqa bikalimātihi walaw kariha l-muj'rimūn

9 End of Opposition to Moses

فَمَاۤ ءَامَنَ لِمُوسَىٰۤ إِلَّا ذُرِّیَّةࣱ مِّن قَوۡمِهِۦ عَلَىٰ خَوۡفࣲ مِّن فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِمۡ أَن یَفۡتِنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّ فِرۡعَوۡنَ لَعَالࣲ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝٨٣

None save a young generation among his people believed in Moses for (they were in) fear that the Pharaoh and the chiefs among them (who collaborated with the Pharaoh in order not to lose their wealth) would subject them to persecutions. The Pharaoh was indeed a haughty tyrant in the land and he was indeed one of those who commit excesses

famā āmana limūsā illā dhurriyyatun min qawmihi ʿalā khawfin min fir'ʿawna wamala-ihim an yaftinahum wa-inna fir'ʿawna laʿālin fī l-arḍi wa-innahu lamina l-mus'rifīn

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كُنتُمۡ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ فَعَلَیۡهِ تَوَكَّلُوۤا۟ إِن كُنتُم مُّسۡلِمِینَ ۝٨٤

And Moses said (in earnest advice to his people): "If you believe in God, then put your trust in Him, if you are Muslims (who have wholly submitted themselves to Him)."

waqāla mūsā yāqawmi in kuntum āmantum bil-lahi faʿalayhi tawakkalū in kuntum mus'limīn

فَقَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلۡنَا رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٨٥

They invoked (verbally and by their actions): "In God we put our trust. Our Lord! Do not make us a target of persecution for the wrongdoing people

faqālū ʿalā l-lahi tawakkalnā rabbanā lā tajʿalnā fit'natan lil'qawmi l-ẓālimīn

وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحۡمَتِكَ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٨٦

"And save us through Your mercy from those unbelieving people!"

wanajjinā biraḥmatika mina l-qawmi l-kāfirīn

وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَأَخِیهِ أَن تَبَوَّءَا لِقَوۡمِكُمَا بِمِصۡرَ بُیُوتࣰا وَٱجۡعَلُوا۟ بُیُوتَكُمۡ قِبۡلَةࣰ وَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨٧

We revealed to Moses and his brother: "Appoint houses for your people in Egypt (as places of refuge and coming together in God’s cause), and (as a whole community) make your homes places to turn to God, and establish the Prescribed Prayer in conformity with its conditions. And (O Moses,) give glad tidings to the believers!"

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā wa-akhīhi an tabawwaā liqawmikumā bimiṣ'ra buyūtan wa-ij'ʿalū buyūtakum qib'latan wa-aqīmū l-ṣalata wabashiri l-mu'minīn

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّكَ ءَاتَیۡتَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَأَهُۥ زِینَةࣰ وَأَمۡوَ ٰلࣰا فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا رَبَّنَا لِیُضِلُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِكَۖ رَبَّنَا ٱطۡمِسۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَٱشۡدُدۡ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَلَا یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٨٨

Moses prayed to God: "Our Lord! Surely You have granted the Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and riches in the life of this world, and so, our Lord, they lead people astray from Your way. Our Lord! Destroy their riches, and press upon their hearts, for they do not believe until they see the painful punishment."

waqāla mūsā rabbanā innaka ātayta fir'ʿawna wamala-ahu zīnatan wa-amwālan fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā rabbanā liyuḍillū ʿan sabīlika rabbanā iṭ'mis ʿalā amwālihim wa-ush'dud ʿalā qulūbihim falā yu'minū ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

قَالَ قَدۡ أُجِیبَت دَّعۡوَتُكُمَا فَٱسۡتَقِیمَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعَاۤنِّ سَبِیلَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٩

God said: "The prayer of you two (O Moses and Aaron) has indeed been answered; so, (since the realization of your goals is dependent upon your way of conduct,) continue steadfastly on the Straight Path, and do not follow the way of those who have no knowledge (of right and wrong) and act in ignorance."

qāla qad ujībat daʿwatukumā fa-is'taqīmā walā tattabiʿānni sabīla alladhīna lā yaʿlamūn

۞ وَجَـٰوَزۡنَا بِبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُمۡ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَجُنُودُهُۥ بَغۡیࣰا وَعَدۡوًاۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَدۡرَكَهُ ٱلۡغَرَقُ قَالَ ءَامَنتُ أَنَّهُۥ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِیۤ ءَامَنَتۡ بِهِۦ بَنُوۤا۟ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٩٠

And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and the Pharaoh and his hosts pursued them with vehement insolence and hostility, until (they were overwhelmed by the waters of the sea opened for Moses and his people to cross,) and when the drowning overtook the Pharaoh, he exclaimed: "I have come to believe that there is no deity save Him in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims (those who have submitted themselves wholly to Him)."

wajāwaznā bibanī is'rāīla l-baḥra fa-atbaʿahum fir'ʿawnu wajunūduhu baghyan waʿadwan ḥattā idhā adrakahu l-gharaqu qāla āmantu annahu lā ilāha illā alladhī āmanat bihi banū is'rāīla wa-anā mina l-mus'limīn

ءَاۤلۡءَـٰنَ وَقَدۡ عَصَیۡتَ قَبۡلُ وَكُنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٩١

Now? – (You surrender now) when before this you always rebelled and were of those engaged in causing disorder and corruption

āl'āna waqad ʿaṣayta qablu wakunta mina l-muf'sidīn

فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ نُنَجِّیكَ بِبَدَنِكَ لِتَكُونَ لِمَنۡ خَلۡفَكَ ءَایَةࣰۚ وَإِنَّ كَثِیرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا لَغَـٰفِلُونَ ۝٩٢

So this day (as a recompense for your belief in the state of despair which will be of no avail to you in the Hereafter), We will save only your body, that you may be a sign for those to come after you. Surely, a good many people among humankind are heedless of Our signs (full of clear warning and lessons)

fal-yawma nunajjīka bibadanika litakūna liman khalfaka āyatan wa-inna kathīran mina l-nāsi ʿan āyātinā laghāfilūn

10 Warning benefits the Heedful

وَلَقَدۡ بَوَّأۡنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ مُبَوَّأَ صِدۡقࣲ وَرَزَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ فَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَقۡضِی بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝٩٣

And indeed We settled the Children of Israel in a proper place of dwelling, and provided them with pure, wholesome things. They did not suffer discord until after the knowledge came to them (of the way they would have to follow and of what they would meet as a result of what they did). Your Lord will surely judge among them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that on which they used to differ

walaqad bawwanā banī is'rāīla mubawwa-a ṣid'qin warazaqnāhum mina l-ṭayibāti famā ikh'talafū ḥattā jāahumu l-ʿil'mu inna rabbaka yaqḍī baynahum yawma l-qiyāmati fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn

فَإِن كُنتَ فِی شَكࣲّ مِّمَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ فَسۡءَلِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَقۡرَءُونَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبۡلِكَۚ لَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكَ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُمۡتَرِینَ ۝٩٤

If you are in doubt about the truth of what We have sent down on you (concerning what happened between Moses and the Pharaoh), then ask those who have been reading the Book (which was given to them) before you. Surely the truth has come to you from your Lord, so be not among those who feel doubt

fa-in kunta fī shakkin mimmā anzalnā ilayka fasali alladhīna yaqraūna l-kitāba min qablika laqad jāaka l-ḥaqu min rabbika falā takūnanna mina l-mum'tarīn

وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٩٥

And neither be among those who deny God’s signs and Revelations, for then you will be among the losers

walā takūnanna mina alladhīna kadhabū biāyāti l-lahi fatakūna mina l-khāsirīn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ حَقَّتۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٩٦

Those for whom the truth of your Lord’s decree (that they will die unbelievers and go to Hell) has been confirmed – they will not believe

inna alladhīna ḥaqqat ʿalayhim kalimatu rabbika lā yu'minūn

وَلَوۡ جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ كُلُّ ءَایَةٍ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٩٧

Even though every proof should come to them, until they see the painful punishment

walaw jāathum kullu āyatin ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

فَلَوۡلَا كَانَتۡ قَرۡیَةٌ ءَامَنَتۡ فَنَفَعَهَاۤ إِیمَـٰنُهَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡمَ یُونُسَ لَمَّاۤ ءَامَنُوا۟ كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخِزۡیِ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَمَتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝٩٨

If only there had been a community that believed (just when God’s decree of punishment was issued) and profited by their belief – there was none except the people of Jonah. When they came to believe We withdrew from them the punishment of disgrace in the life of this world, and We allowed them to enjoy life for a term

falawlā kānat qaryatun āmanat fanafaʿahā īmānuhā illā qawma yūnusa lammā āmanū kashafnā ʿanhum ʿadhāba l-khiz'yi fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wamattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīni

وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ رَبُّكَ لَءَامَنَ مَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كُلُّهُمۡ جَمِیعًاۚ أَفَأَنتَ تُكۡرِهُ ٱلنَّاسَ حَتَّىٰ یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٩٩

If your Lord had so willed (and, denying them free will, compelled humankind to believe), all who are on the earth would surely have believed, all of them. Would you, then, force people until they become believers

walaw shāa rabbuka laāmana man fī l-arḍi kulluhum jamīʿan afa-anta tuk'rihu l-nāsa ḥattā yakūnū mu'minīn

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفۡسٍ أَن تُؤۡمِنَ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَیَجۡعَلُ ٱلرِّجۡسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠٠

It is not for any person to believe save by God’s leave. God sets those who do not use their reason in a mire of uncleanness

wamā kāna linafsin an tu'mina illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi wayajʿalu l-rij'sa ʿalā alladhīna lā yaʿqilūn

قُلِ ٱنظُرُوا۟ مَاذَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَمَا تُغۡنِی ٱلۡءَایَـٰتُ وَٱلنُّذُرُ عَن قَوۡمࣲ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٠١

Say: "Consider what there is (and what happens) in the heavens and on the earth." But all such signs (of the truth of the essentials of faith) and the warnings cannot avail a people who will not believe

quli unẓurū mādhā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā tugh'nī l-āyātu wal-nudhuru ʿan qawmin lā yu'minūn

فَهَلۡ یَنتَظِرُونَ إِلَّا مِثۡلَ أَیَّامِ ٱلَّذِینَ خَلَوۡا۟ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ قُلۡ فَٱنتَظِرُوۤا۟ إِنِّی مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُنتَظِرِینَ ۝١٠٢

For what do they watch and wait but the like of the days of punishment which befell those (unbelievers) who passed away before them? Say: "Then watch and wait, and I will be with you watching and waiting."

fahal yantaẓirūna illā mith'la ayyāmi alladhīna khalaw min qablihim qul fa-intaẓirū innī maʿakum mina l-muntaẓirīn

ثُمَّ نُنَجِّی رُسُلَنَا وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ حَقًّا عَلَیۡنَا نُنجِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

Then We save Our Messengers and those who believe (as We always did before). We have bound Ourselves to save the believers

thumma nunajjī rusulanā wa-alladhīna āmanū kadhālika ḥaqqan ʿalaynā nunji l-mu'minīn

11 Divine Judgment

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِن كُنتُمۡ فِی شَكࣲّ مِّن دِینِی فَلَاۤ أَعۡبُدُ ٱلَّذِینَ تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنۡ أَعۡبُدُ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِی یَتَوَفَّىٰكُمۡۖ وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٤

Say: "O humankind! If you are in doubt about my religion, then (know that) I do not worship those whom you worship apart from God, but I worship God alone, Who causes you all to die. I have been commanded to be of the believers

qul yāayyuhā l-nāsu in kuntum fī shakkin min dīnī falā aʿbudu alladhīna taʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi walākin aʿbudu l-laha alladhī yatawaffākum wa-umir'tu an akūna mina l-mu'minīn

وَأَنۡ أَقِمۡ وَجۡهَكَ لِلدِّینِ حَنِیفࣰا وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٠٥

"(I have also been commanded:) Set all your being exclusively to the true religion as one with pure faith (free from unbelief and hypocrisy), and never be among those who associate partners with God

wa-an aqim wajhaka lilddīni ḥanīfan walā takūnanna mina l-mush'rikīn

وَلَا تَدۡعُ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَنفَعُكَ وَلَا یَضُرُّكَۖ فَإِن فَعَلۡتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذࣰا مِّنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠٦

And do not invoke, apart from God, that which can neither benefit you nor harm you; if you did so, then you would be of the wrongdoers (who wrong themselves by committing the greatest wrong of associating partners with God)

walā tadʿu min dūni l-lahi mā lā yanfaʿuka walā yaḍurruka fa-in faʿalta fa-innaka idhan mina l-ẓālimīn

وَإِن یَمۡسَسۡكَ ٱللَّهُ بِضُرࣲّ فَلَا كَاشِفَ لَهُۥۤ إِلَّا هُوَۖ وَإِن یُرِدۡكَ بِخَیۡرࣲ فَلَا رَاۤدَّ لِفَضۡلِهِۦۚ یُصِیبُ بِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٧

If God touches you with affliction, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He wills any good for you, then there is none who can hold back His bounty. He causes it to reach whomever He wills of His servants. He is the All-Forgiving, the All-Compassionate."

wa-in yamsaska l-lahu biḍurrin falā kāshifa lahu illā huwa wa-in yurid'ka bikhayrin falā rādda lifaḍlihi yuṣību bihi man yashāu min ʿibādihi wahuwa l-ghafūru l-raḥīm

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ فَمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ فَإِنَّمَا یَهۡتَدِی لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا یَضِلُّ عَلَیۡهَاۖ وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ عَلَیۡكُم بِوَكِیلࣲ ۝١٠٨

Say: "O humankind! Assuredly there has come to you the truth from your Lord. Whoever, therefore, chooses the right way, follows it but for his own good; and whoever chooses to go astray, goes astray but to his own harm. I am not one appointed as a guardian over you to assume your responsibility."

qul yāayyuhā l-nāsu qad jāakumu l-ḥaqu min rabbikum famani ih'tadā fa-innamā yahtadī linafsihi waman ḍalla fa-innamā yaḍillu ʿalayhā wamā anā ʿalaykum biwakīli

وَٱتَّبِعۡ مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكَ وَٱصۡبِرۡ حَتَّىٰ یَحۡكُمَ ٱللَّهُۚ وَهُوَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡحَـٰكِمِینَ ۝١٠٩

And follow what is revealed to you, and remain patient and steadfast in your way until God gives His judgment. And He is the best in giving judgment

wa-ittabiʿ mā yūḥā ilayka wa-iṣ'bir ḥattā yaḥkuma l-lahu wahuwa khayru l-ḥākimīn
