1 Truth of Revelation

الۤرۚ تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡحَكِیمِ ۝١

A.L.R. These are the signs of the wise book

alif-lam-ra til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-ḥakīm

أَكَانَ لِلنَّاسِ عَجَبًا أَنۡ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَنۡ أَنذِرِ ٱلنَّاسَ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ أَنَّ لَهُمۡ قَدَمَ صِدۡقٍ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡۗ قَالَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝٢

Is it a strange thing unto the men of Mecca, that We have revealed our will unto a man from among them, saying, denounce threats unto men if they believe not; and bear good tidings unto those who believe, that on the merit of their sincerity they have an interest with their Lord? The unbelievers say, this is manifest sorcery

akāna lilnnāsi ʿajaban an awḥaynā ilā rajulin min'hum an andhiri l-nāsa wabashiri alladhīna āmanū anna lahum qadama ṣid'qin ʿinda rabbihim qāla l-kāfirūna inna hādhā lasāḥirun mubīnu

إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامࣲ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِۖ یُدَبِّرُ ٱلۡأَمۡرَۖ مَا مِن شَفِیعٍ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ إِذۡنِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٣

Verily your Lord is God, who hath created the heavens and the earth in six days; and then ascended his throne, to take on himself the government of all things. There is no intercessor, but by his permission. This is God, your Lord; therefore serve him. Will ye not consider

inna rabbakumu l-lahu alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa fī sittati ayyāmin thumma is'tawā ʿalā l-ʿarshi yudabbiru l-amra mā min shafīʿin illā min baʿdi idh'nihi dhālikumu l-lahu rabbukum fa-uʿ'budūhu afalā tadhakkarūn

إِلَیۡهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ جَمِیعࣰاۖ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقًّاۚ إِنَّهُۥ یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥ لِیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَهُمۡ شَرَابࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ وَعَذَابٌ أَلِیمُۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٤

Unto Him shall ye all return, according to the certain promise of God: For He produceth a creature, and then causeth it to return again; that He may reward those who believe and do that which is right, with equity. But as for the unbelievers, they shall drink boiling water, and they shall suffer a grievous punishment, for that they have disbelieved

ilayhi marjiʿukum jamīʿan waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqan innahu yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu liyajziya alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti bil-qis'ṭi wa-alladhīna kafarū lahum sharābun min ḥamīmin waʿadhābun alīmun bimā kānū yakfurūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ ضِیَاۤءࣰ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ نُورࣰا وَقَدَّرَهُۥ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعۡلَمُوا۟ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِینَ وَٱلۡحِسَابَۚ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَ ٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ یُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥

It is He who hath ordained the sun to shine by day, and the moon for a light by night; and hath appointed her stations, that ye might know the number of years, and the computation of time. God hath not created this, but with truth. He explaineth his signs unto people who understand

huwa alladhī jaʿala l-shamsa ḍiyāan wal-qamara nūran waqaddarahu manāzila litaʿlamū ʿadada l-sinīna wal-ḥisāba mā khalaqa l-lahu dhālika illā bil-ḥaqi yufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yaʿlamūn

إِنَّ فِی ٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَّقُونَ ۝٦

Moreover in the vicissitude of night and day, and whatever God hath created in heaven and earth, are surely signs unto men who fear Him

inna fī ikh'tilāfi al-layli wal-nahāri wamā khalaqa l-lahu fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi laāyātin liqawmin yattaqūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ لِقَاۤءَنَا وَرَضُوا۟ بِٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱطۡمَأَنُّوا۟ بِهَا وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا غَـٰفِلُونَ ۝٧

Verily they who hope not to meet Us at the last day, and delight in this present life, and rest securely in the same, and who are negligent of our signs

inna alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā waraḍū bil-ḥayati l-dun'yā wa-iṭ'ma-annū bihā wa-alladhīna hum ʿan āyātinā ghāfilūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَأۡوَىٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٨

their dwelling shall be hell fire, for that which they have deserved

ulāika mawāhumu l-nāru bimā kānū yaksibūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ یَهۡدِیهِمۡ رَبُّهُم بِإِیمَـٰنِهِمۡۖ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٩

But as to those who believe, and work righteousness, their Lord will direct them because of their faith; they shall have rivers flowing through gardens of pleasure

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti yahdīhim rabbuhum biīmānihim tajrī min taḥtihimu l-anhāru fī jannāti l-naʿīm

دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ فِیهَا سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ ٱللَّهُمَّ وَتَحِیَّتُهُمۡ فِیهَا سَلَـٰمࣱۚ وَءَاخِرُ دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ أَنِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠

Their prayer therein shall be, praise be unto thee, O God! And their salutation therein shall be, peace! And the end of their prayer shall be, praise be unto God, the Lord of all creatures

daʿwāhum fīhā sub'ḥānaka l-lahuma wataḥiyyatuhum fīhā salāmun waākhiru daʿwāhum ani l-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

2 Punishment of Rejection

۞ وَلَوۡ یُعَجِّلُ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ ٱلشَّرَّ ٱسۡتِعۡجَالَهُم بِٱلۡخَیۡرِ لَقُضِیَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ أَجَلُهُمۡۖ فَنَذَرُ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ لِقَاۤءَنَا فِی طُغۡیَـٰنِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝١١

If God should cause evil to hasten unto men, according to their desire of hastening good, verily their end had been decreed. Wherefore We suffer those who hope not to meet Us at the resurrection, to wander amazedly in their error

walaw yuʿajjilu l-lahu lilnnāsi l-shara is'tiʿ'jālahum bil-khayri laquḍiya ilayhim ajaluhum fanadharu alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā fī ṭugh'yānihim yaʿmahūn

وَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ ٱلضُّرُّ دَعَانَا لِجَنۢبِهِۦۤ أَوۡ قَاعِدًا أَوۡ قَاۤىِٕمࣰا فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُ ضُرَّهُۥ مَرَّ كَأَن لَّمۡ یَدۡعُنَاۤ إِلَىٰ ضُرࣲّ مَّسَّهُۥۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ زُیِّنَ لِلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢

When evil befalleth a man; he prayeth unto Us lying on his side, or sitting, or standing: But when We deliver him from his affliction, he continueth his former course of life, as though he had not called upon Us to defend him against the evil which had befallen him. Thus was that which the transgressors committed prepared for them

wa-idhā massa l-insāna l-ḍuru daʿānā lijanbihi aw qāʿidan aw qāiman falammā kashafnā ʿanhu ḍurrahu marra ka-an lam yadʿunā ilā ḍurrin massahu kadhālika zuyyina lil'mus'rifīna mā kānū yaʿmalūn

وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡقُرُونَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِیُؤۡمِنُوا۟ۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٣

We have formerly destroyed the generations who were before you, O men of Mecca, when they had acted unjustly, and our apostles had come unto them with evident miracles and they would not believe. Thus do We reward the wicked people

walaqad ahlaknā l-qurūna min qablikum lammā ẓalamū wajāathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti wamā kānū liyu'minū kadhālika najzī l-qawma l-muj'rimīn

ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَـٰكُمۡ خَلَـٰۤىِٕفَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ لِنَنظُرَ كَیۡفَ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٤

Afterwards did We cause you to succeed them in the earth; that We might see how ye would act

thumma jaʿalnākum khalāifa fī l-arḍi min baʿdihim linanẓura kayfa taʿmalūn

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَاتُنَا بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ لِقَاۤءَنَا ٱئۡتِ بِقُرۡءَانٍ غَیۡرِ هَـٰذَاۤ أَوۡ بَدِّلۡهُۚ قُلۡ مَا یَكُونُ لِیۤ أَنۡ أُبَدِّلَهُۥ مِن تِلۡقَاۤىِٕ نَفۡسِیۤۖ إِنۡ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیَّۖ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ إِنۡ عَصَیۡتُ رَبِّی عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥

When our evident signs are recited unto them, they who hope not to meet us at the resurrection, say, bring a different Koran from this; or make some change therein. Answer, it is not fit for me, that I should change it at my pleasure: I follow that only which is revealed unto me. Verily I fear, if I should be disobedient unto my Lord, the punishment of the great day

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhim āyātunā bayyinātin qāla alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā i'ti biqur'ānin ghayri hādhā aw baddil'hu qul mā yakūnu lī an ubaddilahu min til'qāi nafsī in attabiʿu illā mā yūḥā ilayya innī akhāfu in ʿaṣaytu rabbī ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قُل لَّوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا تَلَوۡتُهُۥ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكُم بِهِۦۖ فَقَدۡ لَبِثۡتُ فِیكُمۡ عُمُرࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٦

Say, if God had so pleased, I had not read it unto you, neither had I taught you the same. I have already dwelt among you to the age of forty years, before I received it. Do ye not therefore understand

qul law shāa l-lahu mā talawtuhu ʿalaykum walā adrākum bihi faqad labith'tu fīkum ʿumuran min qablihi afalā taʿqilūn

فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ كَذَّبَ بِءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝١٧

And who is more unjust than he who deviseth a lie against God, or accuseth his signs of falsehood? Surely the wicked shall not prosper

faman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw kadhaba biāyātihi innahu lā yuf'liḥu l-muj'rimūn

وَیَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَضُرُّهُمۡ وَلَا یَنفَعُهُمۡ وَیَقُولُونَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ شُفَعَـٰۤؤُنَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِۚ قُلۡ أَتُنَبِّءُونَ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا لَا یَعۡلَمُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَلَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١٨

They worship besides God, that which can neither hurt them nor profit them, and they say, these are our intercessors with God. Answer, will ye tell God that which He knoweth not, neither in heaven nor in earth? Praise be unto Him! And far be that from Him, which they associate with Him

wayaʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi mā lā yaḍurruhum walā yanfaʿuhum wayaqūlūna hāulāi shufaʿāunā ʿinda l-lahi qul atunabbiūna l-laha bimā lā yaʿlamu fī l-samāwāti walā fī l-arḍi sub'ḥānahu wataʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

وَمَا كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ إِلَّاۤ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ فَٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةࣱ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ فِیمَا فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٩

Men were professors of one religion only, but they dissented therefrom; and if a decree had not previously issued from thy Lord, deferring their punishment, verily the matter had been decided between them, concerning which they disagreed

wamā kāna l-nāsu illā ummatan wāḥidatan fa-ikh'talafū walawlā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika laquḍiya baynahum fīmā fīhi yakhtalifūn

وَیَقُولُونَ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۖ فَقُلۡ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡغَیۡبُ لِلَّهِ فَٱنتَظِرُوۤا۟ إِنِّی مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُنتَظِرِینَ ۝٢٠

They say, unless a sign be sent down unto him from his Lord, we will not believe. Answer, verily that which is hidden is known only unto God: Wait therefore the pleasure of God; and I also will wait with you

wayaqūlūna lawlā unzila ʿalayhi āyatun min rabbihi faqul innamā l-ghaybu lillahi fa-intaẓirū innī maʿakum mina l-muntaẓirīn

3 Merciful Dealing

وَإِذَاۤ أَذَقۡنَا ٱلنَّاسَ رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ ضَرَّاۤءَ مَسَّتۡهُمۡ إِذَا لَهُم مَّكۡرࣱ فِیۤ ءَایَاتِنَاۚ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ أَسۡرَعُ مَكۡرًاۚ إِنَّ رُسُلَنَا یَكۡتُبُونَ مَا تَمۡكُرُونَ ۝٢١

And when We caused the men of Mecca to taste mercy, after an affliction which had befallen them, behold, they devised a stratagem against our signs. Say unto them, God is more swift in executing a stratagem, than ye. Verily our messengers write down that which ye deceitfully devise

wa-idhā adhaqnā l-nāsa raḥmatan min baʿdi ḍarrāa massathum idhā lahum makrun fī āyātinā quli l-lahu asraʿu makran inna rusulanā yaktubūna mā tamkurūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُسَیِّرُكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا كُنتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَجَرَیۡنَ بِهِم بِرِیحࣲ طَیِّبَةࣲ وَفَرِحُوا۟ بِهَا جَاۤءَتۡهَا رِیحٌ عَاصِفࣱ وَجَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡجُ مِن كُلِّ مَكَانࣲ وَظَنُّوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ أُحِیطَ بِهِمۡ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَ لَىِٕنۡ أَنجَیۡتَنَا مِنۡ هَـٰذِهِۦ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝٢٢

It is He who hath given you conveniencies for travelling by land and by sea; so that ye be in ships, which sail with them, with a favourable wind, and they rejoice therein. And when a tempestuous wind overtaketh them, and waves come upon them from every side, and they think themselves to be encompassed with inevitable dangers; they call upon God, exhibiting the pure religion unto Him, and saying, verily if Thou deliver us from this peril, we will be of those who give thanks

huwa alladhī yusayyirukum fī l-bari wal-baḥri ḥattā idhā kuntum fī l-ful'ki wajarayna bihim birīḥin ṭayyibatin wafariḥū bihā jāathā rīḥun ʿāṣifun wajāahumu l-mawju min kulli makānin waẓannū annahum uḥīṭa bihim daʿawū l-laha mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna la-in anjaytanā min hādhihi lanakūnanna mina l-shākirīn

فَلَمَّاۤ أَنجَىٰهُمۡ إِذَا هُمۡ یَبۡغُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّۗ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّمَا بَغۡیُكُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِكُمۖ مَّتَـٰعَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَنُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٣

But when He had delivered them, behold, they behaved themselves insolently in the earth, without justice. O men, verily the violence which ye commit against your own souls, is for the enjoyment of this present life only; afterwards unto Us shall ye return, and We will declare unto you that which ye have done

falammā anjāhum idhā hum yabghūna fī l-arḍi bighayri l-ḥaqi yāayyuhā l-nāsu innamā baghyukum ʿalā anfusikum matāʿa l-ḥayati l-dun'yā thumma ilaynā marjiʿukum fanunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا كَمَاۤءٍ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَٱخۡتَلَطَ بِهِۦ نَبَاتُ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِمَّا یَأۡكُلُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمُ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَخَذَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ زُخۡرُفَهَا وَٱزَّیَّنَتۡ وَظَنَّ أَهۡلُهَاۤ أَنَّهُمۡ قَـٰدِرُونَ عَلَیۡهَاۤ أَتَىٰهَاۤ أَمۡرُنَا لَیۡلًا أَوۡ نَهَارࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهَا حَصِیدࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ تَغۡنَ بِٱلۡأَمۡسِۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٤

Verily the likeness of this present life is no other than as water, which We send down from heaven, and wherewith the productions of the earth are mixed, of which men eat, and cattle also, until the earth receive its vesture, and be adorned with various plants: The inhabitants thereof imagine that they have power over the same; but our command cometh unto it by night, or by day, and we render it as though it had been mown, as though it had not yesterday abounded with fruits. Thus do We explain our signs unto people who consider

innamā mathalu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā kamāin anzalnāhu mina l-samāi fa-ikh'talaṭa bihi nabātu l-arḍi mimmā yakulu l-nāsu wal-anʿāmu ḥattā idhā akhadhati l-arḍu zukh'rufahā wa-izzayyanat waẓanna ahluhā annahum qādirūna ʿalayhā atāhā amrunā laylan aw nahāran fajaʿalnāhā ḥaṣīdan ka-an lam taghna bil-amsi kadhālika nufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَٱللَّهُ یَدۡعُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ دَارِ ٱلسَّلَـٰمِ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٢٥

God inviteth unto the dwelling of peace, and directeth whom He pleaseth into the right way

wal-lahu yadʿū ilā dāri l-salāmi wayahdī man yashāu ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

۞ لِّلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ وَزِیَادَةࣱۖ وَلَا یَرۡهَقُ وُجُوهَهُمۡ قَتَرࣱ وَلَا ذِلَّةٌۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٢٦

They who do right shall receive a most excellent reward, and a superabundant addition; neither blackness nor shame shall cover their faces. These shall be the inhabitants of paradise; they shall continue therein for ever

lilladhīna aḥsanū l-ḥus'nā waziyādatun walā yarhaqu wujūhahum qatarun walā dhillatun ulāika aṣḥābu l-janati hum fīhā khālidūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَسَبُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ جَزَاۤءُ سَیِّئَةِۭ بِمِثۡلِهَا وَتَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۖ مَّا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنۡ عَاصِمࣲۖ كَأَنَّمَاۤ أُغۡشِیَتۡ وُجُوهُهُمۡ قِطَعࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ مُظۡلِمًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٢٧

But they who commit evil shall receive the reward of evil, equal thereunto, and they shall be covered with shame, -- for they shall have no protector against God; -- as though their faces were covered with the profound darkness of the night. These shall be the inhabitants of hell fire; they shall remain therein for ever

wa-alladhīna kasabū l-sayiāti jazāu sayyi-atin bimith'lihā watarhaquhum dhillatun mā lahum mina l-lahi min ʿāṣimin ka-annamā ugh'shiyat wujūhuhum qiṭaʿan mina al-layli muẓ'liman ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

وَیَوۡمَ نَحۡشُرُهُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ مَكَانَكُمۡ أَنتُمۡ وَشُرَكَاۤؤُكُمۡۚ فَزَیَّلۡنَا بَیۡنَهُمۡۖ وَقَالَ شُرَكَاۤؤُهُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ إِیَّانَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٨

On the day of the resurrection We will gather them altogether; then will We say unto the idolaters, get ye to your place, ye and your companions: And We will separate them from one another; and their companions shall say unto them, ye did not worship us

wayawma naḥshuruhum jamīʿan thumma naqūlu lilladhīna ashrakū makānakum antum washurakāukum fazayyalnā baynahum waqāla shurakāuhum mā kuntum iyyānā taʿbudūn

فَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِیدَۢا بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَكُمۡ إِن كُنَّا عَنۡ عِبَادَتِكُمۡ لَغَـٰفِلِینَ ۝٢٩

and God is a sufficient witness between us and you; neither did we mind your worshipping of us

fakafā bil-lahi shahīdan baynanā wabaynakum in kunnā ʿan ʿibādatikum laghāfilīn

هُنَالِكَ تَبۡلُوا۟ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّاۤ أَسۡلَفَتۡۚ وَرُدُّوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَوۡلَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡحَقِّۖ وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٣٠

There shall every soul experince that which it shall have sent before it; and they shall be brought before God, their true Lord; and the false deities which they vainly imagined, shall disappear from before them

hunālika tablū kullu nafsin mā aslafat waruddū ilā l-lahi mawlāhumu l-ḥaqi waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn

4 Uniqueness of Divine Gifts

قُلۡ مَن یَرۡزُقُكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَمَّن یَمۡلِكُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ وَمَن یُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡحَیَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَیِّتِ وَیُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡمَیِّتَ مِنَ ٱلۡحَیِّ وَمَن یُدَبِّرُ ٱلۡأَمۡرَۚ فَسَیَقُولُونَ ٱللَّهُۚ فَقُلۡ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝٣١

Say, who provideth you food from heaven and earth? Or who hath the absolute power over the hearing and the sight? And who bringeth forth the living from the dead, and bringeth forth the dead from the living? And who governeth all things? They will surely answer, God. Say, will ye not therefore fear Him

qul man yarzuqukum mina l-samāi wal-arḍi amman yamliku l-samʿa wal-abṣāra waman yukh'riju l-ḥaya mina l-mayiti wayukh'riju l-mayita mina l-ḥayi waman yudabbiru l-amra fasayaqūlūna l-lahu faqul afalā tattaqūn

فَذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّۖ فَمَاذَا بَعۡدَ ٱلۡحَقِّ إِلَّا ٱلضَّلَـٰلُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُصۡرَفُونَ ۝٣٢

This is therefore God, your true Lord: And what remaineth there after truth, except error? How therefore are ye turned aside from the truth

fadhālikumu l-lahu rabbukumu l-ḥaqu famādhā baʿda l-ḥaqi illā l-ḍalālu fa-annā tuṣ'rafūn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ حَقَّتۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ فَسَقُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٣٣

Thus is the word of thy Lord verified upon them who do wickedly, that they believe not

kadhālika ḥaqqat kalimatu rabbika ʿalā alladhīna fasaqū annahum lā yu'minūn

قُلۡ هَلۡ مِن شُرَكَاۤىِٕكُم مَّن یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥۚ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٣٤

Say, is there any of your companions who produceth a creature, and then causeth it to return unto Himself? Say, God produceth a creature, and then causeth it to return unto Himself. How therefore are ye turned aside from his worship

qul hal min shurakāikum man yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu quli l-lahu yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu fa-annā tu'fakūn

قُلۡ هَلۡ مِن شُرَكَاۤىِٕكُم مَّن یَهۡدِیۤ إِلَى ٱلۡحَقِّۚ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یَهۡدِی لِلۡحَقِّۗ أَفَمَن یَهۡدِیۤ إِلَى ٱلۡحَقِّ أَحَقُّ أَن یُتَّبَعَ أَمَّن لَّا یَهِدِّیۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن یُهۡدَىٰۖ فَمَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٣٥

Say, is there any of your companions who directeth unto the truth? Say, God directeth unto the truth. Whether is he therefore, who directeth unto the truth, more worthy to be followed; or he who directeth not, unless he be directed? What aileth you therefore, that ye judge as ye do

qul hal min shurakāikum man yahdī ilā l-ḥaqi quli l-lahu yahdī lil'ḥaqqi afaman yahdī ilā l-ḥaqi aḥaqqu an yuttabaʿa amman lā yahiddī illā an yuh'dā famā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn

وَمَا یَتَّبِعُ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ إِلَّا ظَنًّاۚ إِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا یُغۡنِی مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَیۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِمَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٣٦

And the greater part of them follow an uncertain opinion only; but a mere opinion attaineth not unto any truth. Verily God knoweth that which they do

wamā yattabiʿu aktharuhum illā ẓannan inna l-ẓana lā yugh'nī mina l-ḥaqi shayan inna l-laha ʿalīmun bimā yafʿalūn

وَمَا كَانَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ أَن یُفۡتَرَىٰ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِن تَصۡدِیقَ ٱلَّذِی بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡهِ وَتَفۡصِیلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهِ مِن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٣٧

This Koran could not have been composed by any except God; but it is a confirmation of that which was revealed before it, and an explanation of the scripture; there is no doubt thereof; sent down from the Lord of all creatures

wamā kāna hādhā l-qur'ānu an yuf'tarā min dūni l-lahi walākin taṣdīqa alladhī bayna yadayhi watafṣīla l-kitābi lā rayba fīhi min rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۖ قُلۡ فَأۡتُوا۟ بِسُورَةࣲ مِّثۡلِهِۦ وَٱدۡعُوا۟ مَنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣٨

Will they say, Mohammed hath forged it? Answer, bring therefore a chapter like unto it; and call whom ye may to your assistance, besides God, if ye speak truth

am yaqūlūna if'tarāhu qul fatū bisūratin mith'lihi wa-id'ʿū mani is'taṭaʿtum min dūni l-lahi in kuntum ṣādiqīn

بَلۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِمَا لَمۡ یُحِیطُوا۟ بِعِلۡمِهِۦ وَلَمَّا یَأۡتِهِمۡ تَأۡوِیلُهُۥۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٣٩

But they have charged that with falsehood, the knowledge whereof they do not comprehend, neither hath the interpretation thereof come unto them. In the same manner did those who were before them, accuse their prophets of imposture; but behold, what was the end of the unjust

bal kadhabū bimā lam yuḥīṭū biʿil'mihi walammā yatihim tawīluhu kadhālika kadhaba alladhīna min qablihim fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-ẓālimīn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یُؤۡمِنُ بِهِۦ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن لَّا یُؤۡمِنُ بِهِۦۚ وَرَبُّكَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٤٠

There are some of them who believe therein; and there are some of them who believe not therein: And thy Lord well knoweth the corrupt doers

wamin'hum man yu'minu bihi wamin'hum man lā yu'minu bihi warabbuka aʿlamu bil-muf'sidīn

5 Reprobates' Punishment

وَإِن كَذَّبُوكَ فَقُل لِّی عَمَلِی وَلَكُمۡ عَمَلُكُمۡۖ أَنتُم بَرِیۤءُونَ مِمَّاۤ أَعۡمَلُ وَأَنَا۠ بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٤١

If they accuse thee of imposture, say, I have my work, and ye have your work; ye shall be clear of that which I do, and I will be clear of that which ye do

wa-in kadhabūka faqul lī ʿamalī walakum ʿamalukum antum barīūna mimmā aʿmalu wa-anā barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَسۡتَمِعُونَ إِلَیۡكَۚ أَفَأَنتَ تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ وَلَوۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤٢

There are some of them who hearken unto thee; but wilt thou make the deaf to hear, although they do not understand

wamin'hum man yastamiʿūna ilayka afa-anta tus'miʿu l-ṣuma walaw kānū lā yaʿqilūn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَنظُرُ إِلَیۡكَۚ أَفَأَنتَ تَهۡدِی ٱلۡعُمۡیَ وَلَوۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٤٣

And there are some of them who look at thee; but wilt thou direct the blind, although they see not

wamin'hum man yanẓuru ilayka afa-anta tahdī l-ʿum'ya walaw kānū lā yub'ṣirūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَظۡلِمُ ٱلنَّاسَ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٤٤

Verily God will not deal unjustly with men in any respect: But men deal unjustly with their own souls

inna l-laha lā yaẓlimu l-nāsa shayan walākinna l-nāsa anfusahum yaẓlimūn

وَیَوۡمَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡ كَأَن لَّمۡ یَلۡبَثُوۤا۟ إِلَّا سَاعَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلنَّهَارِ یَتَعَارَفُونَ بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ قَدۡ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَاۤءِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهۡتَدِینَ ۝٤٥

On a certain day He will gather them together, as though they had not tarried above an hour of a day: They shall know one another. Then shall they perish who have denied the meeting of God; and were not rightly directed

wayawma yaḥshuruhum ka-an lam yalbathū illā sāʿatan mina l-nahāri yataʿārafūna baynahum qad khasira alladhīna kadhabū biliqāi l-lahi wamā kānū muh'tadīn

وَإِمَّا نُرِیَنَّكَ بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی نَعِدُهُمۡ أَوۡ نَتَوَفَّیَنَّكَ فَإِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ ثُمَّ ٱللَّهُ شَهِیدٌ عَلَىٰ مَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٤٦

Whether We cause thee to see a part of the punishment wherewith We have threatened them, or whether We cause thee to die before thou see it; unto Us shall they return: Then shall God be witness of that which they do

wa-immā nuriyannaka baʿḍa alladhī naʿiduhum aw natawaffayannaka fa-ilaynā marjiʿuhum thumma l-lahu shahīdun ʿalā mā yafʿalūn

وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ رَّسُولࣱۖ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ رَسُولُهُمۡ قُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُم بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٤٧

Unto every nation hath an apostle been sent: And when their apostle came, the matter was decided between them with equity; and they were not treated unjustly

walikulli ummatin rasūlun fa-idhā jāa rasūluhum quḍiya baynahum bil-qis'ṭi wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

وَیَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡوَعۡدُ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٤٨

The unbelievers say, when will this threatening be made good, if ye speak truth

wayaqūlūna matā hādhā l-waʿdu in kuntum ṣādiqīn

قُل لَّاۤ أَمۡلِكُ لِنَفۡسِی ضَرࣰّا وَلَا نَفۡعًا إِلَّا مَا شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۗ لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌۚ إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهُمۡ فَلَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ سَاعَةࣰ وَلَا یَسۡتَقۡدِمُونَ ۝٤٩

Answer, I am able neither to procure advantage unto my self, nor to avert mischief from me, but as God pleaseth. Unto every nation is a fixed term decreed; when their term therefore is expired, they shall not have respite for an hour, neither shall their punishment be anticipated

qul lā amliku linafsī ḍarran walā nafʿan illā mā shāa l-lahu likulli ummatin ajalun idhā jāa ajaluhum falā yastakhirūna sāʿatan walā yastaqdimūn

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِنۡ أَتَىٰكُمۡ عَذَابُهُۥ بَیَـٰتًا أَوۡ نَهَارࣰا مَّاذَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُ مِنۡهُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٥٠

Say, tell me; if the punishment of God overtake you by night, or by day, what part thereof will the ungodly wish to be hastened

qul ara-aytum in atākum ʿadhābuhu bayātan aw nahāran mādhā yastaʿjilu min'hu l-muj'rimūn

أَثُمَّ إِذَا مَا وَقَعَ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦۤۚ ءَاۤلۡءَـٰنَ وَقَدۡ كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٥١

When it falleth on you, do ye then believe it? Now do ye believe, and wish it far from you, when ye formerly desired it should be hastened

athumma idhā mā waqaʿa āmantum bihi āl'āna waqad kuntum bihi tastaʿjilūn

ثُمَّ قِیلَ لِلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ هَلۡ تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٥٢

Then shall it be said unto the wicked, taste ye the punishment of eternity: Would ye receive other than the reward of that which ye have wrought

thumma qīla lilladhīna ẓalamū dhūqū ʿadhāba l-khul'di hal tuj'zawna illā bimā kuntum taksibūn

۞ وَیَسۡتَنۢبِءُونَكَ أَحَقٌّ هُوَۖ قُلۡ إِی وَرَبِّیۤ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقࣱّۖ وَمَاۤ أَنتُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ ۝٥٣

They will desire to know of thee, whether this be true. Answer, yea, by my Lord, it is certainly true; neither shall ye weaken God's power, so as to escape it

wayastanbiūnaka aḥaqqun huwa qul ī warabbī innahu laḥaqqun wamā antum bimuʿ'jizīn

6 Mercy takes Precedence of Punishment

وَلَوۡ أَنَّ لِكُلِّ نَفۡسࣲ ظَلَمَتۡ مَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَٱفۡتَدَتۡ بِهِۦۗ وَأَسَرُّوا۟ ٱلنَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَأَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَۖ وَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُم بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٤

Verily, if every soul which hath acted wickedly had whatever is on the earth, it would willingly redeem it self therewith at the last day. Yet they will conceal their repentance, after they shall have seen the punishment: And the matter shall be decided between them with equity; and they shall not be unjustly treated

walaw anna likulli nafsin ẓalamat mā fī l-arḍi la-if'tadat bihi wa-asarrū l-nadāmata lammā ra-awū l-ʿadhāba waquḍiya baynahum bil-qis'ṭi wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

أَلَاۤ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٥

Doth not whatsoever is in heaven and on earth belong unto God? Is not the promise of God true? But the greater part of them know it not

alā inna lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi alā inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun walākinna aktharahum lā yaʿlamūn

هُوَ یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٥٦

He giveth life, and He causeth to die; and unto Him shall ye all return

huwa yuḥ'yī wayumītu wa-ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡكُم مَّوۡعِظَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَشِفَاۤءࣱ لِّمَا فِی ٱلصُّدُورِ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣱ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥٧

O men, now hath an admonition come unto you from your Lord, and a remedy for the doubts which are in your breasts; and a direction, and mercy unto the true believers

yāayyuhā l-nāsu qad jāatkum mawʿiẓatun min rabbikum washifāon limā fī l-ṣudūri wahudan waraḥmatun lil'mu'minīn

قُلۡ بِفَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِرَحۡمَتِهِۦ فَبِذَ ٰلِكَ فَلۡیَفۡرَحُوا۟ هُوَ خَیۡرࣱ مِّمَّا یَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٥٨

Say, through the grace of God, and his mercy: Therein therefore let them rejoice; this will be better than what they heap together of worldly riches

qul bifaḍli l-lahi wabiraḥmatihi fabidhālika falyafraḥū huwa khayrun mimmā yajmaʿūn

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُم مَّاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُم مِّن رِّزۡقࣲ فَجَعَلۡتُم مِّنۡهُ حَرَامࣰا وَحَلَـٰلࣰا قُلۡ ءَاۤللَّهُ أَذِنَ لَكُمۡۖ أَمۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٥٩

Say, tell me; of that which God hath sent down unto you for food, have ye declared part to be lawful, and other part to be unlawful? Say, hath God permitted you to make this distinction? Or do ye devise a lie concerning God

qul ara-aytum mā anzala l-lahu lakum min riz'qin fajaʿaltum min'hu ḥarāman waḥalālan qul āllahu adhina lakum am ʿalā l-lahi taftarūn

وَمَا ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَذُو فَضۡلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٦٠

But what will be the opinion of those who devise a lie concerning God, on the day of the resurrection? Verily God is indued with beneficence towards mankind; but the greater part of them do not give thanks

wamā ẓannu alladhīna yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba yawma l-qiyāmati inna l-laha ladhū faḍlin ʿalā l-nāsi walākinna aktharahum lā yashkurūn

7 Good News for Faithful

وَمَا تَكُونُ فِی شَأۡنࣲ وَمَا تَتۡلُوا۟ مِنۡهُ مِن قُرۡءَانࣲ وَلَا تَعۡمَلُونَ مِنۡ عَمَلٍ إِلَّا كُنَّا عَلَیۡكُمۡ شُهُودًا إِذۡ تُفِیضُونَ فِیهِۚ وَمَا یَعۡزُبُ عَن رَّبِّكَ مِن مِّثۡقَالِ ذَرَّةࣲ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَلَاۤ أَصۡغَرَ مِن ذَ ٰلِكَ وَلَاۤ أَكۡبَرَ إِلَّا فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٦١

Thou shalt be engaged in no business, neither shalt thou be employed in meditating on any passage of the Koran; nor shall ye do any action, but We will be witnesses over you, when ye are employed therein. Nor is so much as the weight of an ant hidden from thy Lord, in earth or in heaven: Neither is there any thing lesser than that, or greater, but it is written in the perspicuous book

wamā takūnu fī shanin wamā tatlū min'hu min qur'ānin walā taʿmalūna min ʿamalin illā kunnā ʿalaykum shuhūdan idh tufīḍūna fīhi wamā yaʿzubu ʿan rabbika min mith'qāli dharratin fī l-arḍi walā fī l-samāi walā aṣghara min dhālika walā akbara illā fī kitābin mubīni

أَلَاۤ إِنَّ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ ٱللَّهِ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٦٢

Are not the friends of God the persons, on whom no fear shall come, and who shall not be grieved

alā inna awliyāa l-lahi lā khawfun ʿalayhim walā hum yaḥzanūn

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ یَتَّقُونَ ۝٦٣

They who believe and fear God

alladhīna āmanū wakānū yattaqūn

لَهُمُ ٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَفِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ لَا تَبۡدِیلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٤

shall receive good tidings in this life, and in that which is to come. There is no change in the words of God. This shall be great felicity

lahumu l-bush'rā fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wafī l-ākhirati lā tabdīla likalimāti l-lahi dhālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

وَلَا یَحۡزُنكَ قَوۡلُهُمۡۘ إِنَّ ٱلۡعِزَّةَ لِلَّهِ جَمِیعًاۚ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٦٥

Let not their discourse grieve thee; for all might belongeth unto God: He both heareth and knoweth

walā yaḥzunka qawluhum inna l-ʿizata lillahi jamīʿan huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

أَلَاۤ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَمَا یَتَّبِعُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ شُرَكَاۤءَۚ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَخۡرُصُونَ ۝٦٦

Is not whoever dwelleth in heaven and on earth, subject unto God? What therefore do they follow, who invoke idols, besides God? They follow nothing but a vain opinion; and they only utter lies

alā inna lillahi man fī l-samāwāti waman fī l-arḍi wamā yattabiʿu alladhīna yadʿūna min dūni l-lahi shurakāa in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wa-in hum illā yakhruṣūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ لِتَسۡكُنُوا۟ فِیهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبۡصِرًاۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٦٧

It is He who hath ordained the night for you, that ye may take your rest therein, and the clear day for labour: Verily herein are signs unto people who hearken

huwa alladhī jaʿala lakumu al-layla litaskunū fīhi wal-nahāra mub'ṣiran inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yasmaʿūn

قَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدࣰاۗ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥۖ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِیُّۖ لَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنۡ عِندَكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭ بِهَـٰذَاۤۚ أَتَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٨

They say, God hath begotten children: God forbid! He is self-sufficient. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in heaven and on earth: Ye have no demonstrative proof of this. Do ye speak of God that which ye know not

qālū ittakhadha l-lahu waladan sub'ḥānahu huwa l-ghaniyu lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi in ʿindakum min sul'ṭānin bihādhā ataqūlūna ʿalā l-lahi mā lā taʿlamūn

قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ لَا یُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٦٩

Say, verily they who imagine a lie concerning God, shall not prosper

qul inna alladhīna yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba lā yuf'liḥūn

مَتَـٰعࣱ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا ثُمَّ إِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ ثُمَّ نُذِیقُهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلشَّدِیدَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٧٠

They may enjoy a provision in this world; but afterwards unto Us shall they return, and We will then cause them to taste a grievous punishment, for that they were unbelievers

matāʿun fī l-dun'yā thumma ilaynā marjiʿuhum thumma nudhīquhumu l-ʿadhāba l-shadīda bimā kānū yakfurūn

8 Noah and Moses

۞ وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ نُوحٍ إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَیۡكُم مَّقَامِی وَتَذۡكِیرِی بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلۡتُ فَأَجۡمِعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَكُمۡ وَشُرَكَاۤءَكُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا یَكُنۡ أَمۡرُكُمۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡ غُمَّةࣰ ثُمَّ ٱقۡضُوۤا۟ إِلَیَّ وَلَا تُنظِرُونِ ۝٧١

Rehearse unto them the history of Noah: When he said unto his people, O my people, if my standing forth among you, and my warning you of the signs of God, be grievous unto you; in God do I put my trust. Therefore lay your design against me, and assemble your false gods; but let not your design be carried on by you in the dark: Then come forth against me, and delay not

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a nūḥin idh qāla liqawmihi yāqawmi in kāna kabura ʿalaykum maqāmī watadhkīrī biāyāti l-lahi faʿalā l-lahi tawakkaltu fa-ajmiʿū amrakum washurakāakum thumma lā yakun amrukum ʿalaykum ghummatan thumma iq'ḍū ilayya walā tunẓirūn

فَإِن تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ فَمَا سَأَلۡتُكُم مِّنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِۖ وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٧٢

And if ye turn aside from my admonition, I ask not any reward of you for the same; I expect my reward from God alone, and I am commanded to be one of those who are resigned unto Him

fa-in tawallaytum famā sa-altukum min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā l-lahi wa-umir'tu an akūna mina l-mus'limīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ خَلَـٰۤىِٕفَ وَأَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝٧٣

But they accused him of imposture; wherefore We delivered him, and those who were with him in the ark, and We caused them to survive the flood, but We drowned those who charged our signs with falsehood. Behold therefore, what was the end of those who were warned by Noah

fakadhabūhu fanajjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki wajaʿalnāhum khalāifa wa-aghraqnā alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mundharīn

ثُمَّ بَعَثۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ رُسُلًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِمۡ فَجَاۤءُوهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِیُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِمَا كَذَّبُوا۟ بِهِۦ مِن قَبۡلُۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَطۡبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدِینَ ۝٧٤

Then did We send, after him, apostles unto their respective people, and they came unto them with evident demonstrations: Yet they were not disposed to believe in that which they had before rejected as false. Thus do We seal up the hearts of the transgressors

thumma baʿathnā min baʿdihi rusulan ilā qawmihim fajāūhum bil-bayināti famā kānū liyu'minū bimā kadhabū bihi min qablu kadhālika naṭbaʿu ʿalā qulūbi l-muʿ'tadīn

ثُمَّ بَعَثۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِم مُّوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوۡمࣰا مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٧٥

Then did we send, after them, Moses and Aaron unto Pharaoh and his princes with our signs: But they behaved proudly, and were a wicked people

thumma baʿathnā min baʿdihim mūsā wahārūna ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi biāyātinā fa-is'takbarū wakānū qawman muj'rimīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِنۡ عِندِنَا قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٧٦

And when the truth from Us had come unto them, they said, verily this is manifest sorcery

falammā jāahumu l-ḥaqu min ʿindinā qālū inna hādhā lasiḥ'run mubīnu

قَالَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَتَقُولُونَ لِلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاۤءَكُمۡۖ أَسِحۡرٌ هَـٰذَا وَلَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلسَّـٰحِرُونَ ۝٧٧

Moses said unto them, do ye speak this of the truth, after it hath come unto you? Is this sorcery? But sorcerers shall not prosper

qāla mūsā ataqūlūna lil'ḥaqqi lammā jāakum asiḥ'run hādhā walā yuf'liḥu l-sāḥirūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَجِئۡتَنَا لِتَلۡفِتَنَا عَمَّا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَنَا وَتَكُونَ لَكُمَا ٱلۡكِبۡرِیَاۤءُ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا نَحۡنُ لَكُمَا بِمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٧٨

They said, art thou come unto us to turn us aside from that religion, which we found our fathers practise; and that ye two may have the command in the land? But we do not believe you

qālū aji'tanā litalfitanā ʿammā wajadnā ʿalayhi ābāanā watakūna lakumā l-kib'riyāu fī l-arḍi wamā naḥnu lakumā bimu'minīn

وَقَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ٱئۡتُونِی بِكُلِّ سَـٰحِرٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٧٩

And Pharaoh said, bring unto me every expert magician

waqāla fir'ʿawnu i'tūnī bikulli sāḥirin ʿalīmi

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٨٠

And when the magicians were come, Moses said unto them, cast down that which ye are about to cast down

falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn

فَلَمَّاۤ أَلۡقَوۡا۟ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ مَا جِئۡتُم بِهِ ٱلسِّحۡرُۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَیُبۡطِلُهُۥۤ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُصۡلِحُ عَمَلَ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٨١

And when they had cast down their rods and cords, Moses said unto them, the enchantment which ye have performed, shall God surely render vain; for God prospereth not the work of the wicked doers

falammā alqaw qāla mūsā mā ji'tum bihi l-siḥ'ru inna l-laha sayub'ṭiluhu inna l-laha lā yuṣ'liḥu ʿamala l-muf'sidīn

وَیُحِقُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡحَقَّ بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٨٢

And God will verify the truth of his words, although the wicked be averse thereto

wayuḥiqqu l-lahu l-ḥaqa bikalimātihi walaw kariha l-muj'rimūn

9 End of Opposition to Moses

فَمَاۤ ءَامَنَ لِمُوسَىٰۤ إِلَّا ذُرِّیَّةࣱ مِّن قَوۡمِهِۦ عَلَىٰ خَوۡفࣲ مِّن فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِمۡ أَن یَفۡتِنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّ فِرۡعَوۡنَ لَعَالࣲ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝٨٣

And there believed not any on Moses, except a generation of his people, for fear of Pharaoh and of his princes, lest he should afflict them. And Pharaoh was lifted up with pride in the earth, and was surely one of the transgressors

famā āmana limūsā illā dhurriyyatun min qawmihi ʿalā khawfin min fir'ʿawna wamala-ihim an yaftinahum wa-inna fir'ʿawna laʿālin fī l-arḍi wa-innahu lamina l-mus'rifīn

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كُنتُمۡ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ فَعَلَیۡهِ تَوَكَّلُوۤا۟ إِن كُنتُم مُّسۡلِمِینَ ۝٨٤

And Moses said, O my people, if ye believe in God, put your trust in Him, if ye be resigned to his will

waqāla mūsā yāqawmi in kuntum āmantum bil-lahi faʿalayhi tawakkalū in kuntum mus'limīn

فَقَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلۡنَا رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٨٥

They answered, we put our trust in God: O Lord, suffer us not to be afflicted by unjust people

faqālū ʿalā l-lahi tawakkalnā rabbanā lā tajʿalnā fit'natan lil'qawmi l-ẓālimīn

وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحۡمَتِكَ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٨٦

but deliver us, through thy mercy, from the unbelieving people

wanajjinā biraḥmatika mina l-qawmi l-kāfirīn

وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَأَخِیهِ أَن تَبَوَّءَا لِقَوۡمِكُمَا بِمِصۡرَ بُیُوتࣰا وَٱجۡعَلُوا۟ بُیُوتَكُمۡ قِبۡلَةࣰ وَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨٧

And We spake by inspiration unto Moses and his brother, saying, provide habitations for your people in Egypt, and make your houses a place of worship, and be constant at prayer; and bear good news unto the true believers

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā wa-akhīhi an tabawwaā liqawmikumā bimiṣ'ra buyūtan wa-ij'ʿalū buyūtakum qib'latan wa-aqīmū l-ṣalata wabashiri l-mu'minīn

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّكَ ءَاتَیۡتَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَأَهُۥ زِینَةࣰ وَأَمۡوَ ٰلࣰا فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا رَبَّنَا لِیُضِلُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِكَۖ رَبَّنَا ٱطۡمِسۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَٱشۡدُدۡ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَلَا یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٨٨

And Moses said, O Lord, verily Thou hast given unto Pharaoh and his people pompous ornaments, and riches in this present life, O Lord, that they may be seduced from thy way: O Lord, bring their riches to nought, and harden their hearts; that they may not believe, until they see their grievous punishment

waqāla mūsā rabbanā innaka ātayta fir'ʿawna wamala-ahu zīnatan wa-amwālan fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā rabbanā liyuḍillū ʿan sabīlika rabbanā iṭ'mis ʿalā amwālihim wa-ush'dud ʿalā qulūbihim falā yu'minū ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

قَالَ قَدۡ أُجِیبَت دَّعۡوَتُكُمَا فَٱسۡتَقِیمَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعَاۤنِّ سَبِیلَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٩

God said, your petition is heard: Be ye upright therefore, and follow not the way of those who are ignorant

qāla qad ujībat daʿwatukumā fa-is'taqīmā walā tattabiʿānni sabīla alladhīna lā yaʿlamūn

۞ وَجَـٰوَزۡنَا بِبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُمۡ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَجُنُودُهُۥ بَغۡیࣰا وَعَدۡوًاۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَدۡرَكَهُ ٱلۡغَرَقُ قَالَ ءَامَنتُ أَنَّهُۥ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِیۤ ءَامَنَتۡ بِهِۦ بَنُوۤا۟ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٩٠

And we caused the children of Israel to pass through the sea; and Pharaoh and his army followed them in a violent and hostile manner; until, when he was drowning, he said, I believe that there is no God but He, on whom the children of Israel believe; and I am one of the resigned

wajāwaznā bibanī is'rāīla l-baḥra fa-atbaʿahum fir'ʿawnu wajunūduhu baghyan waʿadwan ḥattā idhā adrakahu l-gharaqu qāla āmantu annahu lā ilāha illā alladhī āmanat bihi banū is'rāīla wa-anā mina l-mus'limīn

ءَاۤلۡءَـٰنَ وَقَدۡ عَصَیۡتَ قَبۡلُ وَكُنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٩١

Now dost thou believe; when thou hast been hitherto rebellious, and one of the wicked doers

āl'āna waqad ʿaṣayta qablu wakunta mina l-muf'sidīn

فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ نُنَجِّیكَ بِبَدَنِكَ لِتَكُونَ لِمَنۡ خَلۡفَكَ ءَایَةࣰۚ وَإِنَّ كَثِیرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا لَغَـٰفِلُونَ ۝٩٢

This day will We raise thy body from the bottom of the sea, that thou mayest be a sign unto those who shall be after thee; and verily a great number of men are negligent of our signs

fal-yawma nunajjīka bibadanika litakūna liman khalfaka āyatan wa-inna kathīran mina l-nāsi ʿan āyātinā laghāfilūn

10 Warning benefits the Heedful

وَلَقَدۡ بَوَّأۡنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ مُبَوَّأَ صِدۡقࣲ وَرَزَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ فَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَقۡضِی بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝٩٣

And We prepared for the children of Israel an established dwelling in the land of Canaan, and We provided good things for their sustenance: And they differed not in point of religion, until knowledge had come unto them; verily thy Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection, concerning that wherein they disagreed

walaqad bawwanā banī is'rāīla mubawwa-a ṣid'qin warazaqnāhum mina l-ṭayibāti famā ikh'talafū ḥattā jāahumu l-ʿil'mu inna rabbaka yaqḍī baynahum yawma l-qiyāmati fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn

فَإِن كُنتَ فِی شَكࣲّ مِّمَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ فَسۡءَلِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَقۡرَءُونَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبۡلِكَۚ لَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكَ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُمۡتَرِینَ ۝٩٤

If thou art in a doubt concerning any part of that which We have sent down unto thee, ask them who have read the book of the law before thee. Now hath the truth come unto thee from thy Lord; be not therefore one of those who doubt

fa-in kunta fī shakkin mimmā anzalnā ilayka fasali alladhīna yaqraūna l-kitāba min qablika laqad jāaka l-ḥaqu min rabbika falā takūnanna mina l-mum'tarīn

وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٩٥

Neither be thou one of those who charge the signs of God with falsehood, lest thou become one of those who perish

walā takūnanna mina alladhīna kadhabū biāyāti l-lahi fatakūna mina l-khāsirīn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ حَقَّتۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٩٦

Verily those against whom the word of thy Lord is decreed, shall not believe

inna alladhīna ḥaqqat ʿalayhim kalimatu rabbika lā yu'minūn

وَلَوۡ جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ كُلُّ ءَایَةٍ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٩٧

although there come unto them every kind of miracle; until they see the grievous punishment prepared for them

walaw jāathum kullu āyatin ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

فَلَوۡلَا كَانَتۡ قَرۡیَةٌ ءَامَنَتۡ فَنَفَعَهَاۤ إِیمَـٰنُهَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡمَ یُونُسَ لَمَّاۤ ءَامَنُوا۟ كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخِزۡیِ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَمَتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝٩٨

And if it were not so, some city, among the many which have been destroyed, would have believed; and the faith of its inhabitants would have been of advantage unto them: But none of them believed, before the execution of their sentence, except the people of Jonas. When they believed, We delivered them from the punishment of shame in this world, and suffered them to enjoy their lives and possessions for a time

falawlā kānat qaryatun āmanat fanafaʿahā īmānuhā illā qawma yūnusa lammā āmanū kashafnā ʿanhum ʿadhāba l-khiz'yi fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wamattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīni

وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ رَبُّكَ لَءَامَنَ مَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كُلُّهُمۡ جَمِیعًاۚ أَفَأَنتَ تُكۡرِهُ ٱلنَّاسَ حَتَّىٰ یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٩٩

But if they Lord had pleased, verily all who are in the earth would have believed in general. Wilt thou therefore forcibly compel men to be true believers

walaw shāa rabbuka laāmana man fī l-arḍi kulluhum jamīʿan afa-anta tuk'rihu l-nāsa ḥattā yakūnū mu'minīn

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفۡسٍ أَن تُؤۡمِنَ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَیَجۡعَلُ ٱلرِّجۡسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠٠

No soul can believe, but by the permission of God: And He shall pour out his indignation on those who will not understand

wamā kāna linafsin an tu'mina illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi wayajʿalu l-rij'sa ʿalā alladhīna lā yaʿqilūn

قُلِ ٱنظُرُوا۟ مَاذَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَمَا تُغۡنِی ٱلۡءَایَـٰتُ وَٱلنُّذُرُ عَن قَوۡمࣲ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٠١

Say, consider whatever is in heaven and on earth: But signs are of no avail, neither preachers, unto people who will not believe

quli unẓurū mādhā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā tugh'nī l-āyātu wal-nudhuru ʿan qawmin lā yu'minūn

فَهَلۡ یَنتَظِرُونَ إِلَّا مِثۡلَ أَیَّامِ ٱلَّذِینَ خَلَوۡا۟ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ قُلۡ فَٱنتَظِرُوۤا۟ إِنِّی مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُنتَظِرِینَ ۝١٠٢

Do they therefore expect any other than some terrible judgment, like unto the judgments which have fallen on those who have gone before them? Say, wait ye the issue; and I also will wait with you

fahal yantaẓirūna illā mith'la ayyāmi alladhīna khalaw min qablihim qul fa-intaẓirū innī maʿakum mina l-muntaẓirīn

ثُمَّ نُنَجِّی رُسُلَنَا وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ حَقًّا عَلَیۡنَا نُنجِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

Then will We deliver our apostles and those who believe. Thus is it a justice due from Us, that We should deliver the true believers

thumma nunajjī rusulanā wa-alladhīna āmanū kadhālika ḥaqqan ʿalaynā nunji l-mu'minīn

11 Divine Judgment

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِن كُنتُمۡ فِی شَكࣲّ مِّن دِینِی فَلَاۤ أَعۡبُدُ ٱلَّذِینَ تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنۡ أَعۡبُدُ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِی یَتَوَفَّىٰكُمۡۖ وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٤

Say, O men of Mecca, if ye be in doubt concerning my religion, verily I worship not the idols which ye worship, besides God; but I worship God, who will cause you to die: And I am commanded to be one of the true believers

qul yāayyuhā l-nāsu in kuntum fī shakkin min dīnī falā aʿbudu alladhīna taʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi walākin aʿbudu l-laha alladhī yatawaffākum wa-umir'tu an akūna mina l-mu'minīn

وَأَنۡ أَقِمۡ وَجۡهَكَ لِلدِّینِ حَنِیفࣰا وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٠٥

And it was said unto me, set thy face towards the true religion, and be orthodox; and by no means be one of those who attribute companions unto God

wa-an aqim wajhaka lilddīni ḥanīfan walā takūnanna mina l-mush'rikīn

وَلَا تَدۡعُ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَنفَعُكَ وَلَا یَضُرُّكَۖ فَإِن فَعَلۡتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذࣰا مِّنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠٦

neither invoke, besides God, that which can neither profit thee nor hurt thee: For if thou do, thou wilt then certainly become one of the unjust

walā tadʿu min dūni l-lahi mā lā yanfaʿuka walā yaḍurruka fa-in faʿalta fa-innaka idhan mina l-ẓālimīn

وَإِن یَمۡسَسۡكَ ٱللَّهُ بِضُرࣲّ فَلَا كَاشِفَ لَهُۥۤ إِلَّا هُوَۖ وَإِن یُرِدۡكَ بِخَیۡرࣲ فَلَا رَاۤدَّ لِفَضۡلِهِۦۚ یُصِیبُ بِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٧

If God afflict thee with hurt, there is none who can relieve thee from it, except He; and if He willeth thee any good, there is none who can keep back his bounty: He will confer it on such of his servants as He pleaseth; and He is gracious and merciful

wa-in yamsaska l-lahu biḍurrin falā kāshifa lahu illā huwa wa-in yurid'ka bikhayrin falā rādda lifaḍlihi yuṣību bihi man yashāu min ʿibādihi wahuwa l-ghafūru l-raḥīm

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ فَمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ فَإِنَّمَا یَهۡتَدِی لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا یَضِلُّ عَلَیۡهَاۖ وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ عَلَیۡكُم بِوَكِیلࣲ ۝١٠٨

Say, O men, now hath the truth come unto you from your Lord. He therefore who shall be directed, will be directed to the advantage of his own soul: But he who shall err, will err only against the same. I am no guardian over you

qul yāayyuhā l-nāsu qad jāakumu l-ḥaqu min rabbikum famani ih'tadā fa-innamā yahtadī linafsihi waman ḍalla fa-innamā yaḍillu ʿalayhā wamā anā ʿalaykum biwakīli

وَٱتَّبِعۡ مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكَ وَٱصۡبِرۡ حَتَّىٰ یَحۡكُمَ ٱللَّهُۚ وَهُوَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡحَـٰكِمِینَ ۝١٠٩

Do thou, O prophet, follow that which is revealed unto thee: And persevere with patience, until God shall judge; for He is the best judge

wa-ittabiʿ mā yūḥā ilayka wa-iṣ'bir ḥattā yaḥkuma l-lahu wahuwa khayru l-ḥākimīn
