1 Revelation testified by Nature

۞ أَتَىٰۤ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ فَلَا تَسۡتَعۡجِلُوهُۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١

God’s command (for the calamity to strike the unbelievers and their final destruction at the end of time) is bound to come, so (O unbelievers) do not wish it to be hastened (by asking the Messenger to bring it immediately in order only to deride and cast doubt on it). All-Glorified is He, and absolutely exalted above all that they associate with Him

atā amru l-lahi falā tastaʿjilūhu sub'ḥānahu wataʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

یُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ بِٱلرُّوحِ مِنۡ أَمۡرِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۤ أَنۡ أَنذِرُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُۥ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّاۤ أَنَا۠ فَٱتَّقُونِ ۝٢

He sends down the angels with the Spirit (the life-giving Revelation) from His (absolutely pure, immaterial realm of) command upon whom He wills of His servants (saying): "Warn people that there is no deity save Me, so keep from disobedience to Me in reverence for Me and piety."

yunazzilu l-malāikata bil-rūḥi min amrihi ʿalā man yashāu min ʿibādihi an andhirū annahu lā ilāha illā anā fa-ittaqūn

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ تَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٣

He has created the heavens and the earth in truth (meaningfully and with definite purpose, and on solid foundations of truth). Absolutely exalted is He above all that they associate (with Him)

khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi taʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةࣲ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِیمࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٤

He has created human from (so slight a beginning as) a mere drop of seminal fluid; and yet, he turns into an open, fierce adversary (selfishly disputing against the truth)

khalaqa l-insāna min nuṭ'fatin fa-idhā huwa khaṣīmun mubīnu

وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمَ خَلَقَهَاۖ لَكُمۡ فِیهَا دِفۡءࣱ وَمَنَـٰفِعُ وَمِنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٥

And the cattle He has created, from which you get warmth (of clothing) and other uses, and from them you get (food) to eat

wal-anʿāma khalaqahā lakum fīhā dif'on wamanāfiʿu wamin'hā takulūn

وَلَكُمۡ فِیهَا جَمَالٌ حِینَ تُرِیحُونَ وَحِینَ تَسۡرَحُونَ ۝٦

And in them there is beauty for you when you drive them home (in the evening) and when you take them out to pasture (in the morning)

walakum fīhā jamālun ḥīna turīḥūna waḥīna tasraḥūn

وَتَحۡمِلُ أَثۡقَالَكُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَلَدࣲ لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ بَـٰلِغِیهِ إِلَّا بِشِقِّ ٱلۡأَنفُسِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكُمۡ لَرَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٧

They carry your loads to many a land which (otherwise) you would be unable to reach except with great hardship to yourselves. Indeed your Lord is All-Pitying, All-Compassionate

wataḥmilu athqālakum ilā baladin lam takūnū bālighīhi illā bishiqqi l-anfusi inna rabbakum laraūfun raḥīmu

وَٱلۡخَیۡلَ وَٱلۡبِغَالَ وَٱلۡحَمِیرَ لِتَرۡكَبُوهَا وَزِینَةࣰۚ وَیَخۡلُقُ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨

And horses, mules and donkeys (has He created for you) to ride, as well as for ornament (the loveliness they add to your world); and (besides all that you see and know of,) He creates what you have no knowledge of

wal-khayla wal-bighāla wal-ḥamīra litarkabūhā wazīnatan wayakhluqu mā lā taʿlamūn

وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ قَصۡدُ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَمِنۡهَا جَاۤىِٕرࣱۚ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ لَهَدَىٰكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٩

With God (being your Creator) rests the goal of the way (to which He will guide and which you must follow). And some (ways) are crooked (misleading those who follow them). But if God had willed (to impose His guidance without granting people freedom of choice), He would surely have guided you all together (on His way)

waʿalā l-lahi qaṣdu l-sabīli wamin'hā jāirun walaw shāa lahadākum ajmaʿīn

2 Nature upholds Unity

هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰۖ لَّكُم مِّنۡهُ شَرَابࣱ وَمِنۡهُ شَجَرࣱ فِیهِ تُسِیمُونَ ۝١٠

He it is Who sends down from the sky water; you drink thereof, and thereof (drink) the shrubs on which you pasture your cattle

huwa alladhī anzala mina l-samāi māan lakum min'hu sharābun wamin'hu shajarun fīhi tusīmūn

یُنۢبِتُ لَكُم بِهِ ٱلزَّرۡعَ وَٱلزَّیۡتُونَ وَٱلنَّخِیلَ وَٱلۡأَعۡنَـٰبَ وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝١١

With it He causes to grow for you the crops, the olives, the date-palms, the grapes, and all (other) kinds of fruit. Surely in this is a sign (manifesting the truth) for people who reflect

yunbitu lakum bihi l-zarʿa wal-zaytūna wal-nakhīla wal-aʿnāba wamin kulli l-thamarāti inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ وَٱلنُّجُومُ مُسَخَّرَ ٰتُۢ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٢

He has made the night and the day and the sun and the moon to be of service to you, and the stars are made subservient by His command. Surely in that are signs for people who reason and understand

wasakhara lakumu al-layla wal-nahāra wal-shamsa wal-qamara wal-nujūmu musakharātun bi-amrihi inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yaʿqilūn

وَمَا ذَرَأَ لَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُخۡتَلِفًا أَلۡوَ ٰنُهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝١٣

And whatsoever He has created for you on earth of varying colors (and diverse forms and qualities): surely in that is a sign for people who reflect and are mindful

wamā dhara-a lakum fī l-arḍi mukh'talifan alwānuhu inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yadhakkarūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ لِتَأۡكُلُوا۟ مِنۡهُ لَحۡمࣰا طَرِیࣰّا وَتَسۡتَخۡرِجُوا۟ مِنۡهُ حِلۡیَةࣰ تَلۡبَسُونَهَاۖ وَتَرَى ٱلۡفُلۡكَ مَوَاخِرَ فِیهِ وَلِتَبۡتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٤

And He it is Who has made the sea to be of service (to you) so that you eat from it fresh meat, and draw out from it ornaments that you wear. And you see the ships plowing their course through it so that you may go forth in quest of His bounty and give thanks (to Him Who has created all this)

wahuwa alladhī sakhara l-baḥra litakulū min'hu laḥman ṭariyyan watastakhrijū min'hu ḥil'yatan talbasūnahā watarā l-ful'ka mawākhira fīhi walitabtaghū min faḍlihi walaʿallakum tashkurūn

وَأَلۡقَىٰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَوَ ٰسِیَ أَن تَمِیدَ بِكُمۡ وَأَنۡهَـٰرࣰا وَسُبُلࣰا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٥

And He has cast firm mountains on the earth lest it should shake with you (with its movement), and rivers, and roads, so that you may find your way

wa-alqā fī l-arḍi rawāsiya an tamīda bikum wa-anhāran wasubulan laʿallakum tahtadūn

وَعَلَـٰمَـٰتࣲۚ وَبِٱلنَّجۡمِ هُمۡ یَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٦

And (other) way-marks, and they (people) find their way by the stars

waʿalāmātin wabil-najmi hum yahtadūn

أَفَمَن یَخۡلُقُ كَمَن لَّا یَخۡلُقُۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٧

Is He then Who creates to be likened to him who does not create? Will you not reflect and be mindful

afaman yakhluqu kaman lā yakhluqu afalā tadhakkarūn

وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحۡصُوهَاۤۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٨

And should you attempt to count God’s blessings, you could not compute them. God is indeed All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate (Who continues to provide for His servants despite their sins and even their denial of Him)

wa-in taʿuddū niʿ'mata l-lahi lā tuḥ'ṣūhā inna l-laha laghafūrun raḥīmu

وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تُسِرُّونَ وَمَا تُعۡلِنُونَ ۝١٩

God knows whatever you keep concealed and whatever you disclose

wal-lahu yaʿlamu mā tusirrūna wamā tuʿ'linūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَا یَخۡلُقُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَهُمۡ یُخۡلَقُونَ ۝٢٠

But those whom they invoke, apart from God, create nothing, rather they are themselves created

wa-alladhīna yadʿūna min dūni l-lahi lā yakhluqūna shayan wahum yukh'laqūn

أَمۡوَ ٰتٌ غَیۡرُ أَحۡیَاۤءࣲۖ وَمَا یَشۡعُرُونَ أَیَّانَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٢١

Dead (they are), not living (nor can they give life, being themselves in need of it). And they do not know when they will be raised to life

amwātun ghayru aḥyāin wamā yashʿurūna ayyāna yub'ʿathūn

3 Denial due to Ignorance

إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱۚ فَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مُّنكِرَةࣱ وَهُم مُّسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٢٢

Your God is the One God, but those who disbelieve in the Hereafter – their hearts are in denial (of this most evident and essential truth, and the many other truths based on it): they are (too) arrogant (to accept dependence on the Supreme Being, and answerability to Him)

ilāhukum ilāhun wāḥidun fa-alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati qulūbuhum munkiratun wahum mus'takbirūn

لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا یُسِرُّونَ وَمَا یُعۡلِنُونَۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُسۡتَكۡبِرِینَ ۝٢٣

Without doubt, God knows whatever they keep concealed and whatever they disclose; He does not love the arrogant

lā jarama anna l-laha yaʿlamu mā yusirrūna wamā yuʿ'linūna innahu lā yuḥibbu l-mus'takbirīn

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُم مَّاذَاۤ أَنزَلَ رَبُّكُمۡ قَالُوۤا۟ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٤

When it is said to them: "What is it that your Lord (Who sustains, protects, and raises you) has sent down (on the Messenger)?" They say: "Fables of the ancients."

wa-idhā qīla lahum mādhā anzala rabbukum qālū asāṭīru l-awalīn

لِیَحۡمِلُوۤا۟ أَوۡزَارَهُمۡ كَامِلَةࣰ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَمِنۡ أَوۡزَارِ ٱلَّذِینَ یُضِلُّونَهُم بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمٍۗ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَزِرُونَ ۝٢٥

Hence, they will bear their own burdens (of sin) in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they, being ignorant, caused to go astray. Look now! How evil is the burden they load upon themselves

liyaḥmilū awzārahum kāmilatan yawma l-qiyāmati wamin awzāri alladhīna yuḍillūnahum bighayri ʿil'min alā sāa mā yazirūn

4 Wicked meet Disgrace

قَدۡ مَكَرَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ فَأَتَى ٱللَّهُ بُنۡیَـٰنَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوَاعِدِ فَخَرَّ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلسَّقۡفُ مِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٦

Those before them (like them, persistent in unbelief, wrongdoing and evil) schemed (against the Messengers and the Divine Message they brought), so God struck what they built at its foundations, and the roof fell in upon them from above, and the doom came upon them without their perceiving whence it came

qad makara alladhīna min qablihim fa-atā l-lahu bun'yānahum mina l-qawāʿidi fakharra ʿalayhimu l-saqfu min fawqihim wa-atāhumu l-ʿadhābu min ḥaythu lā yashʿurūn

ثُمَّ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یُخۡزِیهِمۡ وَیَقُولُ أَیۡنَ شُرَكَاۤءِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ كُنتُمۡ تُشَـٰۤقُّونَ فِیهِمۡۚ قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ إِنَّ ٱلۡخِزۡیَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ وَٱلسُّوۤءَ عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٢٧

Then on the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and will say: "Where are (those beings whom you claimed) as partners with Me and for whose sake you used to oppose (the believers), defying and disobeying (My guidance)?" Those who (in their lifetime) were endowed with the Knowledge declare: "Disgrace and evil are, this day, on the unbelievers:"

thumma yawma l-qiyāmati yukh'zīhim wayaqūlu ayna shurakāiya alladhīna kuntum tushāqqūna fīhim qāla alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma inna l-khiz'ya l-yawma wal-sūa ʿalā l-kāfirīn

ٱلَّذِینَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ ظَالِمِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡۖ فَأَلۡقَوُا۟ ٱلسَّلَمَ مَا كُنَّا نَعۡمَلُ مِن سُوۤءِۭۚ بَلَىٰۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٨

Those whose souls the angels take while they are still wronging themselves (by falsely associating partners with God, and committing evils). (When they see the punishment), they offer full submission, (saying in an attempt to excuse themselves): "We did not (mean to) do any evil." (But they are answered:) "No! Surely God has full knowledge of what you were doing (and your intentions therein)

alladhīna tatawaffāhumu l-malāikatu ẓālimī anfusihim fa-alqawū l-salama mā kunnā naʿmalu min sūin balā inna l-laha ʿalīmun bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

فَٱدۡخُلُوۤا۟ أَبۡوَ ٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۖ فَلَبِئۡسَ مَثۡوَى ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرِینَ ۝٢٩

"So, go in through the gates of Hell to abide therein." How evil, indeed, is the dwelling of the arrogant (those too haughty to accept God’s guidance)

fa-ud'khulū abwāba jahannama khālidīna fīhā falabi'sa mathwā l-mutakabirīn

۞ وَقِیلَ لِلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ مَاذَاۤ أَنزَلَ رَبُّكُمۡۚ قَالُوا۟ خَیۡرࣰاۗ لِّلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣱۚ وَلَدَارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ خَیۡرࣱۚ وَلَنِعۡمَ دَارُ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣٠

Whereas it is said to those who keep from disobedience to God in reverence for Him and piety: "What is it that your Lord sends down (on the Messenger)?" They answer: "That which is purely good and to our benefit (in both worlds)." For those devoted to doing good in this world, aware that God is seeing them, there is good, and the abode of the Hereafter is indeed better. How excellent, indeed, is the abode of the God-revering, pious

waqīla lilladhīna ittaqaw mādhā anzala rabbukum qālū khayran lilladhīna aḥsanū fī hādhihi l-dun'yā ḥasanatun waladāru l-ākhirati khayrun walaniʿ'ma dāru l-mutaqīn

جَنَّـٰتُ عَدۡنࣲ یَدۡخُلُونَهَا تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُۖ لَهُمۡ فِیهَا مَا یَشَاۤءُونَۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَجۡزِی ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣١

Gardens of perpetual bliss which they will enter, through which rivers flow. Therein they will have whatever they may desire. Thus does God reward the God-revering, pious –

jannātu ʿadnin yadkhulūnahā tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru lahum fīhā mā yashāūna kadhālika yajzī l-lahu l-mutaqīn

ٱلَّذِینَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ طَیِّبِینَ یَقُولُونَ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٢

Those whose souls the angels take whilst they are in a pious state (free of evil, and worshipping none but God alone), saying: "Peace be upon you! Enter Paradise for what you have been doing."

alladhīna tatawaffāhumu l-malāikatu ṭayyibīna yaqūlūna salāmun ʿalaykumu ud'khulū l-janata bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

هَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَ أَمۡرُ رَبِّكَۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٣٣

Are they (the unbelievers and/or those who associate partners with God) but waiting for the angels to come to them (to take their souls or bring them a disaster), or for your Lord’s command (to judge them and open Hell for them)? Even so did those before them. God did not wrong them but they did wrong themselves

hal yanẓurūna illā an tatiyahumu l-malāikatu aw yatiya amru rabbika kadhālika faʿala alladhīna min qablihim wamā ẓalamahumu l-lahu walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

فَأَصَابَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٣٤

Then the evil consequences of what they used to do fell upon them, and that which they were mocking overwhelmed them

fa-aṣābahum sayyiātu mā ʿamilū waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

5 Prophets raised to explain

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ لَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا عَبَدۡنَا مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَیۡءࣲ نَّحۡنُ وَلَاۤ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمۡنَا مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ فَهَلۡ عَلَى ٱلرُّسُلِ إِلَّا ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٣٥

Those who associate partners with God say: "Had God so willed, we would not have worshipped anything other than Him, neither we nor our forefathers; nor would we have declared anything unlawful without (a commandment from) Him." Even so did those who lived before them (and associated partners with God like them). But, then, is any duty laid upon the Messengers except to convey the Message clearly

waqāla alladhīna ashrakū law shāa l-lahu mā ʿabadnā min dūnihi min shayin naḥnu walā ābāunā walā ḥarramnā min dūnihi min shayin kadhālika faʿala alladhīna min qablihim fahal ʿalā l-rusuli illā l-balāghu l-mubīn

وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِی كُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ رَّسُولًا أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُوا۟ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَۖ فَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ هَدَى ٱللَّهُ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ حَقَّتۡ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةُۚ فَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٣٦

And certainly, We have raised within every community a Messenger (to convey the primordial Message): Worship God alone, and keep away from false deities and powers of evil (who institute patterns of faith and rule in defiance of God). Among them (past generations) were people whom God guided, just as there were among them those for whom straying was their just due. Go about, then, on the earth and look! How was the outcome for those who denied (God’s manifest signs and His Messengers)

walaqad baʿathnā fī kulli ummatin rasūlan ani uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ij'tanibū l-ṭāghūta famin'hum man hadā l-lahu wamin'hum man ḥaqqat ʿalayhi l-ḍalālatu fasīrū fī l-arḍi fa-unẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīn

إِن تَحۡرِصۡ عَلَىٰ هُدَىٰهُمۡ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی مَن یُضِلُّۖ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٣٧

Though you long ardently for them (all humankind) to be rightly guided, God surely does not guide those whom He has led astray (as their just due). And they have no helpers (to defend them against God)

in taḥriṣ ʿalā hudāhum fa-inna l-laha lā yahdī man yuḍillu wamā lahum min nāṣirīn

وَأَقۡسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهۡدَ أَیۡمَـٰنِهِمۡ لَا یَبۡعَثُ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَمُوتُۚ بَلَىٰ وَعۡدًا عَلَیۡهِ حَقࣰّا وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٨

And by God they swear their most solemn oaths, "God will never raise from the dead anyone who has died!" No! but it is a promise (that He has laid) upon Himself in truth, but most people do not know (being ignorant and lacking desire for knowledge of the truth)

wa-aqsamū bil-lahi jahda aymānihim lā yabʿathu l-lahu man yamūtu balā waʿdan ʿalayhi ḥaqqan walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

لِیُبَیِّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یَخۡتَلِفُونَ فِیهِ وَلِیَعۡلَمَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ كَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٣٩

(He will indeed fulfill that promise and resurrect them,) so that He will make clear to people the truth about what they differ on, and so that those who disbelieve will know that they were liars

liyubayyina lahumu alladhī yakhtalifūna fīhi waliyaʿlama alladhīna kafarū annahum kānū kādhibīn

إِنَّمَا قَوۡلُنَا لِشَیۡءٍ إِذَاۤ أَرَدۡنَـٰهُ أَن نَّقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَیَكُونُ ۝٤٠

(Raising the dead to life, like giving them life in the first place, is easy for Us:) Our word for a thing when We will it is simply Our saying to it, "Be!" and it is

innamā qawlunā lishayin idhā aradnāhu an naqūla lahu kun fayakūn

6 Opponents' Doom

وَٱلَّذِینَ هَاجَرُوا۟ فِی ٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣰۖ وَلَأَجۡرُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤١

Those who emigrate (to another land) for God’s cause after they have been oppressed on account of their faith, We will surely give them goodly residence in the world, and their reward in the Hereafter is certainly greater. If only they (all people) knew (how great that reward is)

wa-alladhīna hājarū fī l-lahi min baʿdi mā ẓulimū lanubawwi-annahum fī l-dun'yā ḥasanatan wala-ajru l-ākhirati akbaru law kānū yaʿlamūn

ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ ۝٤٢

Those (they are) who have persevered in patience (through all adversities), and it is in their Lord that they put their trust

alladhīna ṣabarū waʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūn

وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالࣰا نُّوحِیۤ إِلَیۡهِمۡۖ فَسۡءَلُوۤا۟ أَهۡلَ ٱلذِّكۡرِ إِن كُنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤٣

We did not send before you (O Muhammad) any but men to whom We revealed – and if you (O people) do not know, then ask the people of expert knowledge (those who have knowledge of the Divine Revelations) —

wamā arsalnā min qablika illā rijālan nūḥī ilayhim fasalū ahla l-dhik'ri in kuntum lā taʿlamūn

بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَٱلزُّبُرِۗ وَأَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلذِّكۡرَ لِتُبَیِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٤٤

(We sent them with) clear proofs of the truth and Scriptures. And on you We have sent down the Reminder (the Qur’an) so that you may make clear to humankind whatever is sent down to them (through you of the truth concerning their present and next life), and that they may reflect

bil-bayināti wal-zuburi wa-anzalnā ilayka l-dhik'ra litubayyina lilnnāsi mā nuzzila ilayhim walaʿallahum yatafakkarūn

أَفَأَمِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ مَكَرُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ أَن یَخۡسِفَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٤٥

Do they, who (in defiance of God’s grace) devise evil schemes, feel safe and secure that God will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the punishment will not befall them without their perceiving whence it has come

afa-amina alladhīna makarū l-sayiāti an yakhsifa l-lahu bihimu l-arḍa aw yatiyahumu l-ʿadhābu min ḥaythu lā yashʿurūn

أَوۡ یَأۡخُذَهُمۡ فِی تَقَلُّبِهِمۡ فَمَا هُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ ۝٤٦

Or that He will not seize them in the midst of their strutting about (the land in pomp and show of dominion), and they are helpless to frustrate Him

aw yakhudhahum fī taqallubihim famā hum bimuʿ'jizīn

أَوۡ یَأۡخُذَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ تَخَوُّفࣲ فَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمۡ لَرَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝٤٧

Or that He will not seize them with gradual wasting (of wealth and health giving them time to mend their ways)? For surely your Lord is All-Pitying, All-Compassionate

aw yakhudhahum ʿalā takhawwufin fa-inna rabbakum laraūfun raḥīmu

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ مِن شَیۡءࣲ یَتَفَیَّؤُا۟ ظِلَـٰلُهُۥ عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ وَٱلشَّمَاۤىِٕلِ سُجَّدࣰا لِّلَّهِ وَهُمۡ دَ ٰخِرُونَ ۝٤٨

Do they not see the things that God has created, how their shadows bend to the right and to the left, making prostration before God, and that in the humblest manner

awalam yaraw ilā mā khalaqa l-lahu min shayin yatafayya-u ẓilāluhu ʿani l-yamīni wal-shamāili sujjadan lillahi wahum dākhirūn

وَ̅لِ̅لَّ̅هِ̅ ̅یَ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِن دَاۤبَّةࣲ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ وَهُمۡ لَا یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٤٩

Before God prostrates itself whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of living creatures, and the angels (likewise, for) they are not arrogant

walillahi yasjudu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi min dābbatin wal-malāikatu wahum lā yastakbirūn

یَخَافُونَ رَبَّهُم مِّن فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَیَفۡعَلُونَ مَا یُؤۡمَرُونَ ۝٥٠ ۩

They (the angels) fear their Lord high above them (i.e., Who has absolute power over them), and they do what they are commanded

yakhāfūna rabbahum min fawqihim wayafʿalūna mā yu'marūn

7 Human Nature revolts against Polytheism

۞ وَقَالَ ٱللَّهُ لَا تَتَّخِذُوۤا۟ إِلَـٰهَیۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِۖ إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱ فَإِیَّـٰیَ فَٱرۡهَبُونِ ۝٥١

God has said: "Do not take two (or more) deities: He is but One God. So be in awe of Me and Me alone, (and be saved from other fears bringing disgrace upon you)."

waqāla l-lahu lā tattakhidhū ilāhayni ith'nayni innamā huwa ilāhun wāḥidun fa-iyyāya fa-ir'habūn

وَلَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَهُ ٱلدِّینُ وَاصِبًاۚ أَفَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ تَتَّقُونَ ۝٥٢

To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth, and to Him alone absolute obedience is always due. Will you, then, fear and obey in piety and due reverence other than God

walahu mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walahu l-dīnu wāṣiban afaghayra l-lahi tattaqūn

وَمَا بِكُم مِّن نِّعۡمَةࣲ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِۖ ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ ٱلضُّرُّ فَإِلَیۡهِ تَجۡءَرُونَ ۝٥٣

Whatever blessing you have, it is from God; and when harm touches you, it is to Him that you cry for help

wamā bikum min niʿ'matin famina l-lahi thumma idhā massakumu l-ḍuru fa-ilayhi tajarūn

ثُمَّ إِذَا كَشَفَ ٱلضُّرَّ عَنكُمۡ إِذَا فَرِیقࣱ مِّنكُم بِرَبِّهِمۡ یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٥٤

When thereafter He removes the harm from you, a party of you attribute partners to their Lord (Who alone sustains and provides for you, and saves you from misfortunes)

thumma idhā kashafa l-ḍura ʿankum idhā farīqun minkum birabbihim yush'rikūn

لِیَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ فَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٥

And so deny with ingratitude the favors God has granted them. So enjoy (O polytheists, the favors We grant you) – in time you will come to know (the truth)

liyakfurū bimā ātaynāhum fatamattaʿū fasawfa taʿlamūn

وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِمَا لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ نَصِیبࣰا مِّمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡۗ تَٱللَّهِ لَتُسۡءَلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنتُمۡ تَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٥٦

They assign, out of what We provide for them, a portion to the things (non-existent gods, misunderstood "causes," the real nature of) which they have no sure knowledge. By God, you will certainly be questioned about what you used to fabricate

wayajʿalūna limā lā yaʿlamūna naṣīban mimmā razaqnāhum tal-lahi latus'alunna ʿammā kuntum taftarūn

وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡبَنَـٰتِ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَلَهُم مَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٥٧

And they assign daughters to God – All-Glorified is He (above having children) – and to themselves sons

wayajʿalūna lillahi l-banāti sub'ḥānahu walahum mā yashtahūn

وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ظَلَّ وَجۡهُهُۥ مُسۡوَدࣰّا وَهُوَ كَظِیمࣱ ۝٥٨

When any of them is given news of the birth of a girl, his face becomes overcast, and he is (as if choking inwardly) with suppressed anger

wa-idhā bushira aḥaduhum bil-unthā ẓalla wajhuhu mus'waddan wahuwa kaẓīmu

یَتَوَ ٰرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ مِن سُوۤءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِۦۤۚ أَیُمۡسِكُهُۥ عَلَىٰ هُونٍ أَمۡ یَدُسُّهُۥ فِی ٱلتُّرَابِۗ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٥٩

He hides himself from the people because of the evil (as he wrongly supposes it) of what he has had news of. (So he debates within himself:) Shall he keep her with dishonor or bury her in earth? Look now! how evil is the judgment they make (concerning God, and how evil is the decision they debate)

yatawārā mina l-qawmi min sūi mā bushira bihi ayum'sikuhu ʿalā hūnin am yadussuhu fī l-turābi alā sāa mā yaḥkumūn

لِلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ مَثَلُ ٱلسَّوۡءِۖ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡمَثَلُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٦٠

To those who do not believe in the Hereafter applies the most evil of attributes, and to God applies the most sublime attribute, and He is the All-Glorious with irresistible might, the All-Wise

lilladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati mathalu l-sawi walillahi l-mathalu l-aʿlā wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

8 Iniquity of Deniers

وَلَوۡ یُؤَاخِذُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّاسَ بِظُلۡمِهِم مَّا تَرَكَ عَلَیۡهَا مِن دَاۤبَّةࣲ وَلَـٰكِن یُؤَخِّرُهُمۡ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّىۖ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهُمۡ لَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ سَاعَةࣰ وَلَا یَسۡتَقۡدِمُونَ ۝٦١

If God were to take people immediately to task for their wrongdoings, He would not leave on it (the earth) any living creature (as the wrongdoings of humankind would make the earth uninhabitable). But He grants them respite to a term appointed (by Him). When their term has come, they can neither delay it by a single moment, nor can they bring it forward

walaw yuākhidhu l-lahu l-nāsa biẓul'mihim mā taraka ʿalayhā min dābbatin walākin yu-akhiruhum ilā ajalin musamman fa-idhā jāa ajaluhum lā yastakhirūna sāʿatan walā yastaqdimūn

وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ مَا یَكۡرَهُونَۚ وَتَصِفُ أَلۡسِنَتُهُمُ ٱلۡكَذِبَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚ لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَ وَأَنَّهُم مُّفۡرَطُونَ ۝٦٢

They make over to God that which they dislike (for themselves); and all the while their tongues utter the falsehood that ("if there would be another life as the Messenger claims," the best reward (Paradise) would be theirs. No doubt theirs is (on the contrary, only) the Fire, and they will be hastened on into it

wayajʿalūna lillahi mā yakrahūna wataṣifu alsinatuhumu l-kadhiba anna lahumu l-ḥus'nā lā jarama anna lahumu l-nāra wa-annahum muf'raṭūn

تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أُمَمࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَزَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ فَهُوَ وَلِیُّهُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٦٣

By God, We certainly sent Messengers to the communities before you (O Messenger), but Satan decked out their deeds as appealing to (the unbelievers among) them. And this day (too, when the Qur’an is being revealed), he is their close friend, and theirs is a painful punishment

tal-lahi laqad arsalnā ilā umamin min qablika fazayyana lahumu l-shayṭānu aʿmālahum fahuwa waliyyuhumu l-yawma walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَمَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ إِلَّا لِتُبَیِّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ فِیهِ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٦٤

And We have not sent down the Book on you except that you may explain to them all (the questions of faith and law) on which they differ, and as guidance and mercy for people who will believe and who have already believed

wamā anzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba illā litubayyina lahumu alladhī ikh'talafū fīhi wahudan waraḥmatan liqawmin yu'minūn

وَٱللَّهُ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَاۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٦٥

God sends down from the sky water and therewith revives the earth after its death. Surely in that there is a sign (manifesting the truth) for people ready to hear (and understand the discourses of the "Book of Creation" and the Revelation.

wal-lahu anzala mina l-samāi māan fa-aḥyā bihi l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yasmaʿūn

9 Parables showing Truth of Revelation

وَإِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ لَعِبۡرَةࣰۖ نُّسۡقِیكُم مِّمَّا فِی بُطُونِهِۦ مِنۢ بَیۡنِ فَرۡثࣲ وَدَمࣲ لَّبَنًا خَالِصࣰا سَاۤىِٕغࣰا لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ ۝٦٦

And surely in the cattle (feeding on the pastures of the revived earth) there is a lesson for you: We give you from that which is within their bodies, (marvelously distinguished from) between the waste and blood, milk that is pure and palatable to those who drink

wa-inna lakum fī l-anʿāmi laʿib'ratan nus'qīkum mimmā fī buṭūnihi min bayni farthin wadamin labanan khāliṣan sāighan lilshāribīn

وَمِن ثَمَرَ ٰتِ ٱلنَّخِیلِ وَٱلۡأَعۡنَـٰبِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنۡهُ سَكَرࣰا وَرِزۡقًا حَسَنًاۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٧

And there are (among the produce that God brings forth as nourishment for you on the revived earth) the fruits of the date-palm, and grapes: you derive from them intoxicants and good, wholesome nourishment. Surely in this there is a sign for people who reason and understand

wamin thamarāti l-nakhīli wal-aʿnābi tattakhidhūna min'hu sakaran wariz'qan ḥasanan inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yaʿqilūn

وَأَوۡحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلنَّحۡلِ أَنِ ٱتَّخِذِی مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا وَمِنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا یَعۡرِشُونَ ۝٦٨

And your Lord inspired the (female) bee: "Take for yourself dwelling-place in the mountains, and in the trees, and in what they (human beings) may build and weave

wa-awḥā rabbuka ilā l-naḥli ani ittakhidhī mina l-jibāli buyūtan wamina l-shajari wamimmā yaʿrishūn

ثُمَّ كُلِی مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِ فَٱسۡلُكِی سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلࣰاۚ یَخۡرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابࣱ مُّخۡتَلِفٌ أَلۡوَ ٰنُهُۥ فِیهِ شِفَاۤءࣱ لِّلنَّاسِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٩

"Then eat of all the fruits, and returning with your loads follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you." There comes forth from their bellies a fluid of varying color, wherein is health for human beings. Surely in this there is a sign for people who reflect

thumma kulī min kulli l-thamarāti fa-us'lukī subula rabbiki dhululan yakhruju min buṭūnihā sharābun mukh'talifun alwānuhu fīhi shifāon lilnnāsi inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ ثُمَّ یَتَوَفَّىٰكُمۡۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن یُرَدُّ إِلَىٰۤ أَرۡذَلِ ٱلۡعُمُرِ لِكَیۡ لَا یَعۡلَمَ بَعۡدَ عِلۡمࣲ شَیۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمࣱ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٧٠

God has created you, then He causes you to die. And among you are those who are deferred to the age of senility so they do not know, of what they once knew, anything at all. Surely God is All-Knowing, All-Powerful

wal-lahu khalaqakum thumma yatawaffākum waminkum man yuraddu ilā ardhali l-ʿumuri likay lā yaʿlama baʿda ʿil'min shayan inna l-laha ʿalīmun qadīru

10 Recipient of Revelation

وَٱللَّهُ فَضَّلَ بَعۡضَكُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ فِی ٱلرِّزۡقِۚ فَمَا ٱلَّذِینَ فُضِّلُوا۟ بِرَاۤدِّی رِزۡقِهِمۡ عَلَىٰ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُمۡ فَهُمۡ فِیهِ سَوَاۤءٌۚ أَفَبِنِعۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِ یَجۡحَدُونَ ۝٧١

And God has favored some of you above others in provision. And yet, (while it is We Who provide them) those who are more favored do not consent to share their provision with those (slaves) whom their right hands possess so that they might be equal with them in this respect. How then do they deny God’s grace and bounty, (and associate partners with Him)

wal-lahu faḍḍala baʿḍakum ʿalā baʿḍin fī l-riz'qi famā alladhīna fuḍḍilū birāddī riz'qihim ʿalā mā malakat aymānuhum fahum fīhi sawāon afabiniʿ'mati l-lahi yajḥadūn

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُم بَنِینَ وَحَفَدَةࣰ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِۚ أَفَبِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ یُؤۡمِنُونَ وَبِنِعۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ هُمۡ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٧٢

God has made for you, from your selves, mates (spouses), and has made for you from your mates children and grandchildren, and has provided you with good, wholesome things. Do they, then, believe in falsehood and deny the blessings of God

wal-lahu jaʿala lakum min anfusikum azwājan wajaʿala lakum min azwājikum banīna waḥafadatan warazaqakum mina l-ṭayibāti afabil-bāṭili yu'minūna wabiniʿ'mati l-lahi hum yakfurūn

وَیَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَمۡلِكُ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٧٣

And do they worship, apart from God, what has no ownership of any provision in the heavens and the earth with which to provide for them, nor have they (whom they falsely worship) any capacity (to take on, still less, discharge such a task)

wayaʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi mā lā yamliku lahum riz'qan mina l-samāwāti wal-arḍi shayan walā yastaṭīʿūn

فَلَا تَضۡرِبُوا۟ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡأَمۡثَالَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ وَأَنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٤

So do not invent similitudes for God (do not liken Him to others to associate partners with Him, for there is nothing similar to Him). Surely God knows and you do not know (the exact truth about Him and the exact nature of things)

falā taḍribū lillahi l-amthāla inna l-laha yaʿlamu wa-antum lā taʿlamūn

۞ ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًا عَبۡدࣰا مَّمۡلُوكࣰا لَّا یَقۡدِرُ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءࣲ وَمَن رَّزَقۡنَـٰهُ مِنَّا رِزۡقًا حَسَنࣰا فَهُوَ یُنفِقُ مِنۡهُ سِرࣰّا وَجَهۡرًاۖ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوُۥنَۚ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٥

God strikes a parable (of two men so that you may understand that true freedom lies in the service of God, because it frees from servitude to all else): a man enslaved, unable to do anything of his own will, and a (free) man whom We have provided with a fair provision from Us, and he spends thereof secretly and openly. Are the two equal? All praise and gratitude are due to God (for to Him alone belongs absolute ownership and disposition of the universe); but most of them do not know

ḍaraba l-lahu mathalan ʿabdan mamlūkan lā yaqdiru ʿalā shayin waman razaqnāhu minnā riz'qan ḥasanan fahuwa yunfiqu min'hu sirran wajahran hal yastawūna l-ḥamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūn

وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلࣰا رَّجُلَیۡنِ أَحَدُهُمَاۤ أَبۡكَمُ لَا یَقۡدِرُ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءࣲ وَهُوَ كَلٌّ عَلَىٰ مَوۡلَىٰهُ أَیۡنَمَا یُوَجِّههُّ لَا یَأۡتِ بِخَیۡرٍ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوِی هُوَ وَمَن یَأۡمُرُ بِٱلۡعَدۡلِ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٧٦

And God strikes a parable of two (other) men: one of them dumb, unable to control anything (unable to answer any call, unable to decide any matter or meet any need). He is a burden upon his master; wherever he directs him, he brings no good. Is he equal with one who enjoins right and justice and is himself on a straight path

waḍaraba l-lahu mathalan rajulayni aḥaduhumā abkamu lā yaqdiru ʿalā shayin wahuwa kallun ʿalā mawlāhu aynamā yuwajjihhu lā yati bikhayrin hal yastawī huwa waman yamuru bil-ʿadli wahuwa ʿalā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

11 Punishment withheld

وَلِلَّهِ غَیۡبُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَمَاۤ أَمۡرُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ إِلَّا كَلَمۡحِ ٱلۡبَصَرِ أَوۡ هُوَ أَقۡرَبُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٧٧

And to God belongs (absolute dominion and full knowledge of) the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and the matter of the Hour (of Doom) is (in relation with the Divine Power) but the twinkling of an eye, or even quicker. Surely God has full power over everything

walillahi ghaybu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā amru l-sāʿati illā kalamḥi l-baṣari aw huwa aqrabu inna l-laha ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

وَٱللَّهُ أَخۡرَجَكُم مِّنۢ بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ وَٱلۡأَفۡءِدَةَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٧٨

God brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers when you knew nothing, and (in order that you might be perfected through learning) endowed you with hearing and eyes and hearts, that you may give thanks (from the heart and in speech, and in action by fulfilling His commandments)

wal-lahu akhrajakum min buṭūni ummahātikum lā taʿlamūna shayan wajaʿala lakumu l-samʿa wal-abṣāra wal-afidata laʿallakum tashkurūn

أَلَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلطَّیۡرِ مُسَخَّرَ ٰتࣲ فِی جَوِّ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَا یُمۡسِكُهُنَّ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٧٩

Do they not consider the birds flying in the air subservient to God’s command? None holds them but God (Who has endowed them with the power of flight). Surely in that there are signs (manifesting the truth) for people who will believe who will deepen in faith

alam yaraw ilā l-ṭayri musakharātin fī jawwi l-samāi mā yum'sikuhunna illā l-lahu inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yu'minūn

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنۢ بُیُوتِكُمۡ سَكَنࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّن جُلُودِ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ بُیُوتࣰا تَسۡتَخِفُّونَهَا یَوۡمَ ظَعۡنِكُمۡ وَیَوۡمَ إِقَامَتِكُمۡ وَمِنۡ أَصۡوَافِهَا وَأَوۡبَارِهَا وَأَشۡعَارِهَاۤ أَثَـٰثࣰا وَمَتَـٰعًا إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝٨٠

And (among His blessings on you) God has made for you of your houses places of dwelling and rest; and He has made for you, from the hides of cattle, (another kind of) dwellings that you find light when you travel and when you stop to camp; and in their wool, fur, and hair (He has provided you with means for) furnishings and enjoyable comforts for a while

wal-lahu jaʿala lakum min buyūtikum sakanan wajaʿala lakum min julūdi l-anʿāmi buyūtan tastakhiffūnahā yawma ẓaʿnikum wayawma iqāmatikum wamin aṣwāfihā wa-awbārihā wa-ashʿārihā athāthan wamatāʿan ilā ḥīni

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّمَّا خَلَقَ ظِلَـٰلࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ أَكۡنَـٰنࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمۡ سَرَ ٰبِیلَ تَقِیكُمُ ٱلۡحَرَّ وَسَرَ ٰبِیلَ تَقِیكُم بَأۡسَكُمۡۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُتِمُّ نِعۡمَتَهُۥ عَلَیۡكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٨١

And (among countless other blessings of His) He has made for you, out of the things He has created, shelter from the sun, and given you refuges in the mountains, and made (the means whereby you make) garments to protect you from heat (or cold), and garments (such as coats-of-mail) to protect you from your (mutual) violence. In this way He completes His favors on you so that you may submit to Him (and thereby receive the greatest favor of all)

wal-lahu jaʿala lakum mimmā khalaqa ẓilālan wajaʿala lakum mina l-jibāli aknānan wajaʿala lakum sarābīla taqīkumu l-ḥara wasarābīla taqīkum basakum kadhālika yutimmu niʿ'matahu ʿalaykum laʿallakum tus'limūn

فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٨٢

Then if they (despite these blessings of God and His completing His favors upon them through this Revelation) turn away, what rests with you, (O Messenger,) is only to convey the Message fully and clearly

fa-in tawallaw fa-innamā ʿalayka l-balāghu l-mubīn

یَعۡرِفُونَ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ یُنكِرُونَهَا وَأَكۡثَرُهُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٨٣

They are fully aware of God’s favors, but they refuse to acknowledge them (as such), and most of them are obstinate unbelievers (willfully and stubbornly associating partners with Him in belief and worship)

yaʿrifūna niʿ'mata l-lahi thumma yunkirūnahā wa-aktharuhumu l-kāfirūn

12 Prophets testify

وَیَوۡمَ نَبۡعَثُ مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ شَهِیدࣰا ثُمَّ لَا یُؤۡذَنُ لِلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَلَا هُمۡ یُسۡتَعۡتَبُونَ ۝٨٤

But a Day (will come) when We raise up a witness from among every community (to testify against them that God’s Religion was communicated to them), and then those who were unbelievers will not be allowed (to speak their excuses), nor will they be allowed (it then being too late) to make amends

wayawma nabʿathu min kulli ummatin shahīdan thumma lā yu'dhanu lilladhīna kafarū walā hum yus'taʿtabūn

وَإِذَا رَءَا ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ فَلَا یُخَفَّفُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یُنظَرُونَ ۝٨٥

When those who persist in wrongdoing (by associating partners with God and committing evils) see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved

wa-idhā raā alladhīna ẓalamū l-ʿadhāba falā yukhaffafu ʿanhum walā hum yunẓarūn

وَإِذَا رَءَا ٱلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ شُرَكَاۤءَهُمۡ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ شُرَكَاۤؤُنَا ٱلَّذِینَ كُنَّا نَدۡعُوا۟ مِن دُونِكَۖ فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ إِلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ إِنَّكُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٨٦

And when those who associate partners with God see their associate-deities (such as Prophets, saints, and heroes, whom they hold as partners with God in worship and absolute obedience), they will say "Our Lord! Those are our associate-deities whom we (held as partners with You, and) used to invoke apart from You. (They are the ones who led us astray.)" Whereupon (those beings) fling at them the retort: "You are indeed liars!"

wa-idhā raā alladhīna ashrakū shurakāahum qālū rabbanā hāulāi shurakāunā alladhīna kunnā nadʿū min dūnika fa-alqaw ilayhimu l-qawla innakum lakādhibūn

وَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ ٱلسَّلَمَۖ وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٨٧

On that Day they (those who associated partners with God) have offered submission to God, (which out of arrogance they used to withhold), and what they used to fabricate (by way of false deities to worship besides God) has failed them

wa-alqaw ilā l-lahi yawma-idhin l-salama waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn

ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ زِدۡنَـٰهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا فَوۡقَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یُفۡسِدُونَ ۝٨٨

Those who (themselves) disbelieved and barred (other) people from God’s way – We add punishment to their punishment because they used to cause disorder and corruption

alladhīna kafarū waṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi zid'nāhum ʿadhāban fawqa l-ʿadhābi bimā kānū yuf'sidūn

وَیَوۡمَ نَبۡعَثُ فِی كُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ شَهِیدًا عَلَیۡهِم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِهِمۡۖ وَجِئۡنَا بِكَ شَهِیدًا عَلَىٰ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِۚ وَنَزَّلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ تِبۡیَـٰنࣰا لِّكُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ وَبُشۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٨٩

And on that Day We will raise up within every community a witness from among themselves (to testify) against them (that God’s Religion was communicated to them), and We will bring you (O Messenger) as a witness against those (whom your Message has reached). We have sent down on you the Book as an exposition of everything (that pertains to guidance and error and to the knowledge of good and evil, and to happiness and misery in both worlds), and guidance and mercy and glad tidings for the Muslims (those who have submitted themselves wholly to God

wayawma nabʿathu fī kulli ummatin shahīdan ʿalayhim min anfusihim waji'nā bika shahīdan ʿalā hāulāi wanazzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba tib'yānan likulli shayin wahudan waraḥmatan wabush'rā lil'mus'limīn

13 Revelation enjoins Good

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَأۡمُرُ بِٱلۡعَدۡلِ وَٱلۡإِحۡسَـٰنِ وَإِیتَاۤىِٕ ذِی ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَیَنۡهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡفَحۡشَاۤءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱلۡبَغۡیِۚ یَعِظُكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٩٠

God enjoins justice (and right judgment in all matters), and devotion to doing good, and generosity towards relatives, and He forbids you indecency, wickedness and vile conduct (all offenses against religion, life, personal property, chastity, and health of mind and body). He exhorts you (repeatedly) so that you may reflect and be mindful

inna l-laha yamuru bil-ʿadli wal-iḥ'sāni waītāi dhī l-qur'bā wayanhā ʿani l-faḥshāi wal-munkari wal-baghyi yaʿiẓukum laʿallakum tadhakkarūn

وَأَوۡفُوا۟ بِعَهۡدِ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا عَـٰهَدتُّمۡ وَلَا تَنقُضُوا۟ ٱلۡأَیۡمَـٰنَ بَعۡدَ تَوۡكِیدِهَا وَقَدۡ جَعَلۡتُمُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ كَفِیلًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٩١

And fulfill God’s covenant when you have made the covenant (and any commitment that you made among yourselves in God’s Name), and do not break your oaths after having confirmed them; indeed you have made God your guarantor. Surely God knows all that you do

wa-awfū biʿahdi l-lahi idhā ʿāhadttum walā tanquḍū l-aymāna baʿda tawkīdihā waqad jaʿaltumu l-laha ʿalaykum kafīlan inna l-laha yaʿlamu mā tafʿalūn

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّتِی نَقَضَتۡ غَزۡلَهَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ قُوَّةٍ أَنكَـٰثࣰا تَتَّخِذُونَ أَیۡمَـٰنَكُمۡ دَخَلَۢا بَیۡنَكُمۡ أَن تَكُونَ أُمَّةٌ هِیَ أَرۡبَىٰ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍۚ إِنَّمَا یَبۡلُوكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦۚ وَلَیُبَیِّنَنَّ لَكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ مَا كُنتُمۡ فِیهِ تَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝٩٢

And do not be like her who destroys her yarn that she herself made strong, betraying (thereby her own effort) – by making your oaths a means of deception among yourselves in order that you may be a community greater in numbers (in power and other worldly things) than another community. In this God is only testing you, and on the Day of Resurrection, He will certainly make clear to you all that on which you used to differ

walā takūnū ka-allatī naqaḍat ghazlahā min baʿdi quwwatin ankāthan tattakhidhūna aymānakum dakhalan baynakum an takūna ummatun hiya arbā min ummatin innamā yablūkumu l-lahu bihi walayubayyinanna lakum yawma l-qiyāmati mā kuntum fīhi takhtalifūn

وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمۡ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ وَلَـٰكِن یُضِلُّ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَلَتُسۡءَلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٣

Had God so willed, He would have made you all one single community (with the same faith and religion), but He (has granted you free will with the result that He) leads astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills. You will certainly be called to account for what you used to do

walaw shāa l-lahu lajaʿalakum ummatan wāḥidatan walākin yuḍillu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu walatus'alunna ʿammā kuntum taʿmalūn

وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَكُمۡ دَخَلَۢا بَیۡنَكُمۡ فَتَزِلَّ قَدَمُۢ بَعۡدَ ثُبُوتِهَا وَتَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلسُّوۤءَ بِمَا صَدَدتُّمۡ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَكُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝٩٤

Do not make your oaths a means of deception and wrongdoing among yourselves, lest feet should slip (from the way of guidance) after having been firm (on it, and that others too may be misled by your misconduct); and you should taste the evil (consequences) of your barring from God’s way. And (in the Hereafter) there is a mighty punishment for you

walā tattakhidhū aymānakum dakhalan baynakum fatazilla qadamun baʿda thubūtihā watadhūqū l-sūa bimā ṣadadttum ʿan sabīli l-lahi walakum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

وَلَا تَشۡتَرُوا۟ بِعَهۡدِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنࣰا قَلِیلًاۚ إِنَّمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٩٥

And do not sell God’s covenant for a trifling price (such as status and other worldly gains). Surely what is with God is the best for you, if you but knew

walā tashtarū biʿahdi l-lahi thamanan qalīlan innamā ʿinda l-lahi huwa khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūn

مَا عِندَكُمۡ یَنفَدُ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ بَاقࣲۗ وَلَنَجۡزِیَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوۤا۟ أَجۡرَهُم بِأَحۡسَنِ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦

Whatever is with you wastes away, but that which is with God is permanent. We will most certainly pay those who are persevering and patient (in fulfilling God’s commandments, refraining from sins, and all the adversities in God’s cause) their reward in accordance with the best of what they used to do

mā ʿindakum yanfadu wamā ʿinda l-lahi bāqin walanajziyanna alladhīna ṣabarū ajrahum bi-aḥsani mā kānū yaʿmalūn

مَنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنࣱ فَلَنُحۡیِیَنَّهُۥ حَیَوٰةࣰ طَیِّبَةࣰۖ وَلَنَجۡزِیَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡرَهُم بِأَحۡسَنِ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٧

Whoever does good, righteous deeds, whether male or female, and is a believer, most certainly We will make him (or her) live a good life, and most certainly We will pay such as these their reward in accordance with the best of what they used to do

man ʿamila ṣāliḥan min dhakarin aw unthā wahuwa mu'minun falanuḥ'yiyannahu ḥayatan ṭayyibatan walanajziyannahum ajrahum bi-aḥsani mā kānū yaʿmalūn

فَإِذَا قَرَأۡتَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ فَٱسۡتَعِذۡ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِیمِ ۝٩٨

So when you recite the Qur’an (as a good, righteous deed), seek refuge in God from Satan rejected (from His Mercy, because of his evil suggestions and whisperings during the recitation)

fa-idhā qarata l-qur'āna fa-is'taʿidh bil-lahi mina l-shayṭāni l-rajīm

إِنَّهُۥ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ سُلۡطَـٰنٌ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ ۝٩٩

Surely he has no power over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord

innahu laysa lahu sul'ṭānun ʿalā alladhīna āmanū waʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūn

إِنَّمَا سُلۡطَـٰنُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَوَلَّوۡنَهُۥ وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِهِۦ مُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١٠٠

His power is only over those who make a confidant of him (seeking and heeding his advice and direction), and those who associate partners with God (in worship and obedience)

innamā sul'ṭānuhu ʿalā alladhīna yatawallawnahu wa-alladhīna hum bihi mush'rikūn

14 Qur'an not a Forgery

وَإِذَا بَدَّلۡنَاۤ ءَایَةࣰ مَّكَانَ ءَایَةࣲ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا یُنَزِّلُ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مُفۡتَرِۭۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٠١

When We put a Revelation in place of another Revelation (in the course of perfecting the Religion and completing Our favor upon you), – and God knows best what He sends down – they say: "You are but a forger!" No, rather, most of them do not know

wa-idhā baddalnā āyatan makāna āyatin wal-lahu aʿlamu bimā yunazzilu qālū innamā anta muf'tarin bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūn

قُلۡ نَزَّلَهُۥ رُوحُ ٱلۡقُدُسِ مِن رَّبِّكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِیُثَبِّتَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهُدࣰى وَبُشۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝١٠٢

Say (to them, O Messenger): "(My Lord affirms): ‘The Spirit of Holiness brings it down in parts from your Lord with truth (embodying the truth and with nothing false in it), that it may confirm those who believe (strengthening them in their faith and adherence to God’s way), and as guidance, and glad tidings for the Muslims (those who have submitted themselves wholly to God)’."

qul nazzalahu rūḥu l-qudusi min rabbika bil-ḥaqi liyuthabbita alladhīna āmanū wahudan wabush'rā lil'mus'limīn

وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا یُعَلِّمُهُۥ بَشَرࣱۗ لِّسَانُ ٱلَّذِی یُلۡحِدُونَ إِلَیۡهِ أَعۡجَمِیࣱّ وَهَـٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِیࣱّ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٠٣

Certainly We know that they say, "It is but a human being that teaches him." But the tongue of him to whom they falsely hint is outlandish, while this (Qur’an) is in clear Arabic tongue

walaqad naʿlamu annahum yaqūlūna innamā yuʿallimuhu basharun lisānu alladhī yul'ḥidūna ilayhi aʿjamiyyun wahādhā lisānun ʿarabiyyun mubīnu

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَا یَهۡدِیهِمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمٌ ۝١٠٤

Surely those who do not believe in God’s Revelations (and therefore persist in wrongdoing) – God does not guide them (to the way of true prosperity), and for them is a painful punishment

inna alladhīna lā yu'minūna biāyāti l-lahi lā yahdīhimu l-lahu walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

إِنَّمَا یَفۡتَرِی ٱلۡكَذِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٠٥

Only those fabricate lies who do not believe in God’s Revelations; and those are the liars

innamā yaftarī l-kadhiba alladhīna lā yu'minūna biāyāti l-lahi wa-ulāika humu l-kādhibūn

مَن كَفَرَ بِٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ إِیمَـٰنِهِۦۤ إِلَّا مَنۡ أُكۡرِهَ وَقَلۡبُهُۥ مُطۡمَىِٕنُّۢ بِٱلۡإِیمَـٰنِ وَلَـٰكِن مَّن شَرَحَ بِٱلۡكُفۡرِ صَدۡرࣰا فَعَلَیۡهِمۡ غَضَبࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٠٦

Whoever disbelieves in God after having believed – not him who is under duress, while his heart is firm in and content with faith, but the one who willingly opens up his heart to unbelief – upon them falls God’s anger (His condemnation of them), and for them is a mighty punishment

man kafara bil-lahi min baʿdi īmānihi illā man uk'riha waqalbuhu muṭ'ma-innun bil-īmāni walākin man sharaḥa bil-kuf'ri ṣadran faʿalayhim ghaḍabun mina l-lahi walahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ ٱسۡتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا عَلَى ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٠٧

That is because they have chosen the present, worldly life in preference to the Hereafter, and because God does not guide the people of unbelief (to the way of true prosperity and Paradise)

dhālika bi-annahumu is'taḥabbū l-ḥayata l-dun'yā ʿalā l-ākhirati wa-anna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-kāfirīn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَسَمۡعِهِمۡ وَأَبۡصَـٰرِهِمۡۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰفِلُونَ ۝١٠٨

Those are they upon whose hearts, hearing, and eyes God has set a seal, and those are they who are unmindful, heedless

ulāika alladhīna ṭabaʿa l-lahu ʿalā qulūbihim wasamʿihim wa-abṣārihim wa-ulāika humu l-ghāfilūn

لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝١٠٩

No doubt, in the Hereafter they will be the utter losers

lā jarama annahum fī l-ākhirati humu l-khāsirūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِینَ هَاجَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا فُتِنُوا۟ ثُمَّ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ وَصَبَرُوۤا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهَا لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١١٠

Yet surely your Lord turns with favor to those who emigrate after they have been subjected to persecutions (because of their faith) and thereafter exert themselves in God’s cause and endure with patience (whatever befalls them) – indeed, in return for such (good deeds) your Lord is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate

thumma inna rabbaka lilladhīna hājarū min baʿdi mā futinū thumma jāhadū waṣabarū inna rabbaka min baʿdihā laghafūrun raḥīmu

15 Fate of Opponents

۞ یَوۡمَ تَأۡتِی كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ تُجَـٰدِلُ عَن نَّفۡسِهَا وَتُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّا عَمِلَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝١١١

(Be ever mindful of) the Day when every soul will come pleading for itself, and every soul will be repaid in full for what it did, and none of them will be wronged

yawma tatī kullu nafsin tujādilu ʿan nafsihā watuwaffā kullu nafsin mā ʿamilat wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلࣰا قَرۡیَةࣰ كَانَتۡ ءَامِنَةࣰ مُّطۡمَىِٕنَّةࣰ یَأۡتِیهَا رِزۡقُهَا رَغَدࣰا مِّن كُلِّ مَكَانࣲ فَكَفَرَتۡ بِأَنۡعُمِ ٱللَّهِ فَأَذَ ٰقَهَا ٱللَّهُ لِبَاسَ ٱلۡجُوعِ وَٱلۡخَوۡفِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَصۡنَعُونَ ۝١١٢

God strikes a parable of a township which was secure and at ease, with its provision coming to it in abundance from all quarters. But it showed ingratitude to God (its people disbelieved, attributed their apparent well-being to other than God and so fell into the habit of making up partners with Him in belief and worship, and daily life); and so God caused it to taste the garment of famine and fear because of what they habitually contrived

waḍaraba l-lahu mathalan qaryatan kānat āminatan muṭ'ma-innatan yatīhā riz'quhā raghadan min kulli makānin fakafarat bi-anʿumi l-lahi fa-adhāqahā l-lahu libāsa l-jūʿi wal-khawfi bimā kānū yaṣnaʿūn

وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ وَهُمۡ ظَـٰلِمُونَ ۝١١٣

For sure a Messenger from among themselves had come to them, but they denied him, and in consequence, the punishment seized them while they were doing wrong

walaqad jāahum rasūlun min'hum fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu wahum ẓālimūn

فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ حَلَـٰلࣰا طَیِّبࣰا وَٱشۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ إِیَّاهُ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝١١٤

So (O people) partake as pure, lawful and wholesome of what God has provided you, and give thanks for His bounty, if it is indeed Him that you worship

fakulū mimmā razaqakumu l-lahu ḥalālan ṭayyiban wa-ush'kurū niʿ'mata l-lahi in kuntum iyyāhu taʿbudūn

إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡمَیۡتَةَ وَٱلدَّمَ وَلَحۡمَ ٱلۡخِنزِیرِ وَمَاۤ أُهِلَّ لِغَیۡرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦۖ فَمَنِ ٱضۡطُرَّ غَیۡرَ بَاغࣲ وَلَا عَادࣲ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١١٥

He has made unlawful to you only carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that (the animal) which is offered in the name of other than God. Yet whoever is constrained by dire necessity to eat of them, provided he does not covet (what is forbidden) and does not exceed (the bounds of necessity) – (no sin shall be on him). Surely God is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate

innamā ḥarrama ʿalaykumu l-maytata wal-dama walaḥma l-khinzīri wamā uhilla lighayri l-lahi bihi famani uḍ'ṭurra ghayra bāghin walā ʿādin fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَا تَصِفُ أَلۡسِنَتُكُمُ ٱلۡكَذِبَ هَـٰذَا حَلَـٰلࣱ وَهَـٰذَا حَرَامࣱ لِّتَفۡتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ لَا یُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١١٦

And do not pronounce for what your tongues falsely describe: "This is lawful and this is forbidden," so that you fabricate falsehood in attribution to God. Surely those who fabricate falsehood in attribution to God do not prosper

walā taqūlū limā taṣifu alsinatukumu l-kadhiba hādhā ḥalālun wahādhā ḥarāmun litaftarū ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba inna alladhīna yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba lā yuf'liḥūn

مَتَـٰعࣱ قَلِیلࣱ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝١١٧

(Their lot is) a brief enjoyment (in this world), and theirs is a painful punishment (in the Hereafter)

matāʿun qalīlun walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمۡنَا مَا قَصَصۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١١٨

And for those who are Jews We made unlawful what We have already related to you. We have never wronged them but they did habitually wrong themselves

waʿalā alladhīna hādū ḥarramnā mā qaṣaṣnā ʿalayka min qablu wamā ẓalamnāhum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِینَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسُّوۤءَ بِجَهَـٰلَةࣲ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَ ٰلِكَ وَأَصۡلَحُوۤا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهَا لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١١٩

Then indeed your Lord is – to those who do evil in ignorance (as a result of failing to counter the prompting of the evil-commanding soul), and then repent (soon as they realize what they have done is wrong) and mend their ways and conduct – indeed your Lord is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate (with special mercy toward His penitent servants)

thumma inna rabbaka lilladhīna ʿamilū l-sūa bijahālatin thumma tābū min baʿdi dhālika wa-aṣlaḥū inna rabbaka min baʿdihā laghafūrun raḥīmu

16 Way to Greatness

إِنَّ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ كَانَ أُمَّةࣰ قَانِتࣰا لِّلَّهِ حَنِیفࣰا وَلَمۡ یَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٢٠

Abraham was an exemplary leader, (whose self-dedication to the good of his community made him) as if a community, sincerely obedient to God as a man of pure faith (free from any stain of unbelief and hypocrisy), and he was not of those who associate partners with God –

inna ib'rāhīma kāna ummatan qānitan lillahi ḥanīfan walam yaku mina l-mush'rikīn

شَاكِرࣰا لِّأَنۡعُمِهِۚ ٱجۡتَبَىٰهُ وَهَدَىٰهُ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝١٢١

Always thankful for His favors. He (God) chose him, and guided him to a straight path (to follow himself and guide others)

shākiran li-anʿumihi ij'tabāhu wahadāhu ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣰۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٢٢

We granted him good in the world, and he is surely among the righteous in the Hereafter

waātaynāhu fī l-dun'yā ḥasanatan wa-innahu fī l-ākhirati lamina l-ṣāliḥīn

ثُمَّ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ أَنِ ٱتَّبِعۡ مِلَّةَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ حَنِیفࣰاۖ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٢٣

Thereafter, We have revealed to you (O Messenger): Follow the way of Abraham as one of pure faith (free from unbelief and hypocrisy), and he was never of those who associate partners with God

thumma awḥaynā ilayka ani ittabiʿ millata ib'rāhīma ḥanīfan wamā kāna mina l-mush'rikīn

إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ ٱلسَّبۡتُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ فِیهِۚ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَیَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٢٤

The Sabbath was ordained only for those who differed about it (not for all the communities that were to follow the way of Abraham). Your Lord will assuredly judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that on which they used to differ

innamā juʿila l-sabtu ʿalā alladhīna ikh'talafū fīhi wa-inna rabbaka layaḥkumu baynahum yawma l-qiyāmati fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn

ٱدۡعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِیلِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلۡحِكۡمَةِ وَٱلۡمَوۡعِظَةِ ٱلۡحَسَنَةِۖ وَجَـٰدِلۡهُم بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ ۝١٢٥

Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and fair exhortation, and argue with them in the best way possible. Your Lord surely knows best who has gone astray from His way, and He knows best who are the rightly guided

ud'ʿu ilā sabīli rabbika bil-ḥik'mati wal-mawʿiẓati l-ḥasanati wajādil'hum bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bil-muh'tadīn

وَإِنۡ عَاقَبۡتُمۡ فَعَاقِبُوا۟ بِمِثۡلِ مَا عُوقِبۡتُم بِهِۦۖ وَلَىِٕن صَبَرۡتُمۡ لَهُوَ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٢٦

If you have to respond to any wrong, respond (only) to the measure of the wrong done to you; but if you endure patiently, it is indeed better for the patient

wa-in ʿāqabtum faʿāqibū bimith'li mā ʿūqib'tum bihi wala-in ṣabartum lahuwa khayrun lilṣṣābirīn

وَٱصۡبِرۡ وَمَا صَبۡرُكَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِۚ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا تَكُ فِی ضَیۡقࣲ مِّمَّا یَمۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢٧

Endure patiently; your endurance is only for God’s sake and by His help; and do not grieve for them (because of their attitude toward your mission), nor be distressed because of what they scheme

wa-iṣ'bir wamā ṣabruka illā bil-lahi walā taḥzan ʿalayhim walā taku fī ḍayqin mimmā yamkurūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّٱلَّذِینَ هُم مُّحۡسِنُونَ ۝١٢٨

Surely God is with those who keep from disobedience to God in reverence for Him and piety and those devoted to doing good, aware that God is seeing them

inna l-laha maʿa alladhīna ittaqaw wa-alladhīna hum muḥ'sinūn
