1 Revelation testified by Nature

۞ أَتَىٰۤ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ فَلَا تَسۡتَعۡجِلُوهُۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١

God's judgment is coming; do not try to hurry it. May He be exalted in His Glory! He is far above anything they associate with Him.

atā amru l-lahi falā tastaʿjilūhu sub'ḥānahu wataʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

یُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ بِٱلرُّوحِ مِنۡ أَمۡرِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۤ أَنۡ أَنذِرُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُۥ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّاۤ أَنَا۠ فَٱتَّقُونِ ۝٢

He sends down the angels with the Spirit that is of His command, on any of His worshipers, He may will, [saying] "Warn all [humanity] that there is no deity other than Me. Therefore, be mindful of me!"

yunazzilu l-malāikata bil-rūḥi min amrihi ʿalā man yashāu min ʿibādihi an andhirū annahu lā ilāha illā anā fa-ittaqūn

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ تَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٣

He has created heaven and earth in Truth. He is magnificently exalted above anything they associate with Him.

khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi taʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةࣲ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِیمࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٤

He created the human being out of a fertilized ovum, and suddenly he is an open adversary.

khalaqa l-insāna min nuṭ'fatin fa-idhā huwa khaṣīmun mubīnu

وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمَ خَلَقَهَاۖ لَكُمۡ فِیهَا دِفۡءࣱ وَمَنَـٰفِعُ وَمِنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٥

And he creates livestock for you to provide warmth and other benefits and to eat.

wal-anʿāma khalaqahā lakum fīhā dif'on wamanāfiʿu wamin'hā takulūn

وَلَكُمۡ فِیهَا جَمَالٌ حِینَ تُرِیحُونَ وَحِینَ تَسۡرَحُونَ ۝٦

There is beauty in them for you, when you bring them home in the evenings and release them to pasture in the mornings.

walakum fīhā jamālun ḥīna turīḥūna waḥīna tasraḥūn

وَتَحۡمِلُ أَثۡقَالَكُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَلَدࣲ لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ بَـٰلِغِیهِ إِلَّا بِشِقِّ ٱلۡأَنفُسِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكُمۡ لَرَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٧

And they carry your cargoes to places that you would be unable to reach without great difficulties. Truly, your Lord is very compassionate, a purveyor of mercy!

wataḥmilu athqālakum ilā baladin lam takūnū bālighīhi illā bishiqqi l-anfusi inna rabbakum laraūfun raḥīmu

وَٱلۡخَیۡلَ وَٱلۡبِغَالَ وَٱلۡحَمِیرَ لِتَرۡكَبُوهَا وَزِینَةࣰۚ وَیَخۡلُقُ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨

And he creates horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and as adornment. And He will continue to create what you do not know.

wal-khayla wal-bighāla wal-ḥamīra litarkabūhā wazīnatan wayakhluqu mā lā taʿlamūn

وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ قَصۡدُ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَمِنۡهَا جَاۤىِٕرࣱۚ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ لَهَدَىٰكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٩

It rests with God alone to show you the right path. However, many will deviate from it. Had he so willed it, he would have guided you all.

waʿalā l-lahi qaṣdu l-sabīli wamin'hā jāirun walaw shāa lahadākum ajmaʿīn

2 Nature upholds Unity

هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰۖ لَّكُم مِّنۡهُ شَرَابࣱ وَمِنۡهُ شَجَرࣱ فِیهِ تُسِیمُونَ ۝١٠

It is He who sends the rains from the skies; some you drink, and from it [grows] the shrubs on which you feed your cattle

huwa alladhī anzala mina l-samāi māan lakum min'hu sharābun wamin'hu shajarun fīhi tusīmūn

یُنۢبِتُ لَكُم بِهِ ٱلزَّرۡعَ وَٱلزَّیۡتُونَ وَٱلنَّخِیلَ وَٱلۡأَعۡنَـٰبَ وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝١١

And he causes your crops to grow: olive trees, date-palm, grapes, and all other types of fruit. In that there is a message for people who think.

yunbitu lakum bihi l-zarʿa wal-zaytūna wal-nakhīla wal-aʿnāba wamin kulli l-thamarāti inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ وَٱلنُّجُومُ مُسَخَّرَ ٰتُۢ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٢

He has made the night and the day subservient to you and the sun, the moon and the stars subject to his laws. There are messages in that for people who comprehend!

wasakhara lakumu al-layla wal-nahāra wal-shamsa wal-qamara wal-nujūmu musakharātun bi-amrihi inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yaʿqilūn

وَمَا ذَرَأَ لَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُخۡتَلِفًا أَلۡوَ ٰنُهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝١٣

And all the beautiful colors that He has made for you on earth- in that, there is a message for people who consider.

wamā dhara-a lakum fī l-arḍi mukh'talifan alwānuhu inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yadhakkarūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ لِتَأۡكُلُوا۟ مِنۡهُ لَحۡمࣰا طَرِیࣰّا وَتَسۡتَخۡرِجُوا۟ مِنۡهُ حِلۡیَةࣰ تَلۡبَسُونَهَاۖ وَتَرَى ٱلۡفُلۡكَ مَوَاخِرَ فِیهِ وَلِتَبۡتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٤

And it is He who made the sea of benefit to you, so that you may eat from it fresh and tender meat and obtain ornaments which you may wear. You see ships cleaving through it, so that you may search for His abundant provision and so you may be grateful.

wahuwa alladhī sakhara l-baḥra litakulū min'hu laḥman ṭariyyan watastakhrijū min'hu ḥil'yatan talbasūnahā watarā l-ful'ka mawākhira fīhi walitabtaghū min faḍlihi walaʿallakum tashkurūn

وَأَلۡقَىٰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَوَ ٰسِیَ أَن تَمِیدَ بِكُمۡ وَأَنۡهَـٰرࣰا وَسُبُلࣰا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٥

And He has placed solid mountains on the earth, so that it does not shift with you, and rivers and pathways, so that you can find your way,

wa-alqā fī l-arḍi rawāsiya an tamīda bikum wa-anhāran wasubulan laʿallakum tahtadūn

وَعَلَـٰمَـٰتࣲۚ وَبِٱلنَّجۡمِ هُمۡ یَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٦

as well as other landmarks-- for it is by the stars that men are able to find their way.

waʿalāmātin wabil-najmi hum yahtadūn

أَفَمَن یَخۡلُقُ كَمَن لَّا یَخۡلُقُۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٧

So, then, is He who creates like one who does not create? Will you not, then, consider?

afaman yakhluqu kaman lā yakhluqu afalā tadhakkarūn

وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحۡصُوهَاۤۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٨

If you should ever try to count God's blessings, you could not count them, for God is truly forgiving and a purveyor of mercy

wa-in taʿuddū niʿ'mata l-lahi lā tuḥ'ṣūhā inna l-laha laghafūrun raḥīmu

وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تُسِرُّونَ وَمَا تُعۡلِنُونَ ۝١٩

And God knows all that you keep secret and all that you declare.

wal-lahu yaʿlamu mā tusirrūna wamā tuʿ'linūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَا یَخۡلُقُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَهُمۡ یُخۡلَقُونَ ۝٢٠

Now, those they call on beside God cannot create anything, since they themselves are created.

wa-alladhīna yadʿūna min dūni l-lahi lā yakhluqūna shayan wahum yukh'laqūn

أَمۡوَ ٰتٌ غَیۡرُ أَحۡیَاۤءࣲۖ وَمَا یَشۡعُرُونَ أَیَّانَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٢١

They are in fact dead, not living, and they do not [even] know when they will be resurrected.

amwātun ghayru aḥyāin wamā yashʿurūna ayyāna yub'ʿathūn

3 Denial due to Ignorance

إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱۚ فَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ قُلُوبُهُم مُّنكِرَةࣱ وَهُم مُّسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٢٢

Your God is the One God, but, because of their arrogance, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter refuse to admit this [truth].

ilāhukum ilāhun wāḥidun fa-alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati qulūbuhum munkiratun wahum mus'takbirūn

لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا یُسِرُّونَ وَمَا یُعۡلِنُونَۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُسۡتَكۡبِرِینَ ۝٢٣

Truly God knows all they conceal and all they declare. He does not love the arrogant.

lā jarama anna l-laha yaʿlamu mā yusirrūna wamā yuʿ'linūna innahu lā yuḥibbu l-mus'takbirīn

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُم مَّاذَاۤ أَنزَلَ رَبُّكُمۡ قَالُوۤا۟ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٤

And whenever [the arrogant] are asked, "What has your Lord sent down?" They say, "Ancient legends!"

wa-idhā qīla lahum mādhā anzala rabbukum qālū asāṭīru l-awalīn

لِیَحۡمِلُوۤا۟ أَوۡزَارَهُمۡ كَامِلَةࣰ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَمِنۡ أَوۡزَارِ ٱلَّذِینَ یُضِلُّونَهُم بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمٍۗ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَزِرُونَ ۝٢٥

So, on the Day of Resurrection they will carry the full weight of their own burdens as well as some of the burdens of those ignorant whom they have misled. How heavy will be the weight of their burden!

liyaḥmilū awzārahum kāmilatan yawma l-qiyāmati wamin awzāri alladhīna yuḍillūnahum bighayri ʿil'min alā sāa mā yazirūn

4 Wicked meet Disgrace

قَدۡ مَكَرَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ فَأَتَى ٱللَّهُ بُنۡیَـٰنَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوَاعِدِ فَخَرَّ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلسَّقۡفُ مِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٦

Those who lived before them also schemed and God destroyed their structure from its foundation and the roof fell on top of them. Suffering came at them suddenly from an unexpected source.

qad makara alladhīna min qablihim fa-atā l-lahu bun'yānahum mina l-qawāʿidi fakharra ʿalayhimu l-saqfu min fawqihim wa-atāhumu l-ʿadhābu min ḥaythu lā yashʿurūn

ثُمَّ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یُخۡزِیهِمۡ وَیَقُولُ أَیۡنَ شُرَكَاۤءِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ كُنتُمۡ تُشَـٰۤقُّونَ فِیهِمۡۚ قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ إِنَّ ٱلۡخِزۡیَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ وَٱلسُّوۤءَ عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٢٧

On the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and say, "Where are those associates, for whose sake you denied Me and became so hostile? Those given knowledge will say, "Truly, disgrace and desolation have come today on the unbelievers,

thumma yawma l-qiyāmati yukh'zīhim wayaqūlu ayna shurakāiya alladhīna kuntum tushāqqūna fīhim qāla alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma inna l-khiz'ya l-yawma wal-sūa ʿalā l-kāfirīn

ٱلَّذِینَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ ظَالِمِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡۖ فَأَلۡقَوُا۟ ٱلسَّلَمَ مَا كُنَّا نَعۡمَلُ مِن سُوۤءِۭۚ بَلَىٰۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٨

those who are wronging themselves while the angels gather them in death!" Then, the schemers will offer peace: "We did not do anything wrong!" [But they will hear an answer] "Yes you did, because God knows well what you were doing!

alladhīna tatawaffāhumu l-malāikatu ẓālimī anfusihim fa-alqawū l-salama mā kunnā naʿmalu min sūin balā inna l-laha ʿalīmun bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

فَٱدۡخُلُوۤا۟ أَبۡوَ ٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۖ فَلَبِئۡسَ مَثۡوَى ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرِینَ ۝٢٩

Now enter the gates of Hell to remain there forever! How evil, will be the abode of the arrogant."

fa-ud'khulū abwāba jahannama khālidīna fīhā falabi'sa mathwā l-mutakabirīn

۞ وَقِیلَ لِلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ مَاذَاۤ أَنزَلَ رَبُّكُمۡۚ قَالُوا۟ خَیۡرࣰاۗ لِّلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣱۚ وَلَدَارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ خَیۡرࣱۚ وَلَنِعۡمَ دَارُ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣٠

Those who are mindful of God were asked, "What has your Lord sent down?" They say, "Absolute goodness!" There is good in this word for those who do good, and the next world is even better. How wonderful is the abode of those who are ever mindful of God

waqīla lilladhīna ittaqaw mādhā anzala rabbukum qālū khayran lilladhīna aḥsanū fī hādhihi l-dun'yā ḥasanatun waladāru l-ākhirati khayrun walaniʿ'ma dāru l-mutaqīn

جَنَّـٰتُ عَدۡنࣲ یَدۡخُلُونَهَا تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُۖ لَهُمۡ فِیهَا مَا یَشَاۤءُونَۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَجۡزِی ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣١

They will enter Gardens of Eden. Running waters flow and there they will have all things they wish. This is how God will reward those who are mindful of Him.

jannātu ʿadnin yadkhulūnahā tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru lahum fīhā mā yashāūna kadhālika yajzī l-lahu l-mutaqīn

ٱلَّذِینَ تَتَوَفَّىٰهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ طَیِّبِینَ یَقُولُونَ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٢

Those who are gathered in death by the angels, being good, will be greeted with "Peace be upon you! Enter paradise by virtue of what you have done"

alladhīna tatawaffāhumu l-malāikatu ṭayyibīna yaqūlūna salāmun ʿalaykumu ud'khulū l-janata bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

هَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَ أَمۡرُ رَبِّكَۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٣٣

Are the [unbelievers] expecting that the angels will appear or that God's judgment will be manifested? Those who lived before them behaved in the same way. God did not wrong them. They wronged themselves.

hal yanẓurūna illā an tatiyahumu l-malāikatu aw yatiya amru rabbika kadhālika faʿala alladhīna min qablihim wamā ẓalamahumu l-lahu walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

فَأَصَابَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٣٤

They were struck by the consequences of the evil they had done, and they were overtaken by the very thing they used to ridicule.

fa-aṣābahum sayyiātu mā ʿamilū waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

5 Prophets raised to explain

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ لَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا عَبَدۡنَا مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَیۡءࣲ نَّحۡنُ وَلَاۤ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمۡنَا مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ فَعَلَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ فَهَلۡ عَلَى ٱلرُّسُلِ إِلَّا ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٣٥

Now the very ones who associate deities with God say, "Had God willed it so, we would have worshipped Him alone, and we would never have declared anything as forbidden unless he had commanded us to do so". This is just what those who lived before them did. Are the messengers required to do more than deliver the message clearly?

waqāla alladhīna ashrakū law shāa l-lahu mā ʿabadnā min dūnihi min shayin naḥnu walā ābāunā walā ḥarramnā min dūnihi min shayin kadhālika faʿala alladhīna min qablihim fahal ʿalā l-rusuli illā l-balāghu l-mubīn

وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِی كُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ رَّسُولًا أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُوا۟ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَۖ فَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ هَدَى ٱللَّهُ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ حَقَّتۡ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةُۚ فَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٣٦

We sent a messenger to every nation, saying: "Worship God, and shun the powers of evil!" Some of them were guided by God, but others deserved to be misguided. Travel around the world and see what happened eventually to those who denied the truth.

walaqad baʿathnā fī kulli ummatin rasūlan ani uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ij'tanibū l-ṭāghūta famin'hum man hadā l-lahu wamin'hum man ḥaqqat ʿalayhi l-ḍalālatu fasīrū fī l-arḍi fa-unẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīn

إِن تَحۡرِصۡ عَلَىٰ هُدَىٰهُمۡ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی مَن یُضِلُّۖ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٣٧

However eager you are for them to be guided, God does not confer his guidance on any whom He judges to have gone astray, and they will have none to help them.

in taḥriṣ ʿalā hudāhum fa-inna l-laha lā yahdī man yuḍillu wamā lahum min nāṣirīn

وَأَقۡسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهۡدَ أَیۡمَـٰنِهِمۡ لَا یَبۡعَثُ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَمُوتُۚ بَلَىٰ وَعۡدًا عَلَیۡهِ حَقࣰّا وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٨

And so they swear by God, vowing most solemnly, "God will never raise the dead to life again!" But He will, for it is a binding promise that He will fulfill, but most people do not know

wa-aqsamū bil-lahi jahda aymānihim lā yabʿathu l-lahu man yamūtu balā waʿdan ʿalayhi ḥaqqan walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

لِیُبَیِّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یَخۡتَلِفُونَ فِیهِ وَلِیَعۡلَمَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ كَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٣٩

[On that day] He will make clear to them the things they differed about and the unbelievers will know that they were lying.

liyubayyina lahumu alladhī yakhtalifūna fīhi waliyaʿlama alladhīna kafarū annahum kānū kādhibīn

إِنَّمَا قَوۡلُنَا لِشَیۡءٍ إِذَاۤ أَرَدۡنَـٰهُ أَن نَّقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَیَكُونُ ۝٤٠

Whenever We will anything to be, we simply say, "Be!" and it is.

innamā qawlunā lishayin idhā aradnāhu an naqūla lahu kun fayakūn

6 Opponents' Doom

وَٱلَّذِینَ هَاجَرُوا۟ فِی ٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣰۖ وَلَأَجۡرُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤١

As for those who emigrated for God's sake after being persecuted, We will bless them with good fortune in this world, but their life in the Hereafter will be even greater still, if they only knew!

wa-alladhīna hājarū fī l-lahi min baʿdi mā ẓulimū lanubawwi-annahum fī l-dun'yā ḥasanatan wala-ajru l-ākhirati akbaru law kānū yaʿlamūn

ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ ۝٤٢

They who, have been patient in hard times and placed their trust in their Lord.

alladhīna ṣabarū waʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūn

وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالࣰا نُّوحِیۤ إِلَیۡهِمۡۖ فَسۡءَلُوۤا۟ أَهۡلَ ٱلذِّكۡرِ إِن كُنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤٣

Even before your time [Prophet] we sent only men who were inspired, and if you [those in doubt] have not yet realized this, ask the followers of earlier revelation.

wamā arsalnā min qablika illā rijālan nūḥī ilayhim fasalū ahla l-dhik'ri in kuntum lā taʿlamūn

بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَٱلزُّبُرِۗ وَأَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلذِّكۡرَ لِتُبَیِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٤٤

[They brought] clear signs of the truth and books of divine wisdom. And we brought down to you this Reminder, so that you may clarify to people all that has been brought down to them that they may reflect on it.

bil-bayināti wal-zuburi wa-anzalnā ilayka l-dhik'ra litubayyina lilnnāsi mā nuzzila ilayhim walaʿallahum yatafakkarūn

أَفَأَمِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ مَكَرُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ أَن یَخۡسِفَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٤٥

Do those who conceive evil plans feel secure that God will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that suffering will not overtake them from whence they least expect it?

afa-amina alladhīna makarū l-sayiāti an yakhsifa l-lahu bihimu l-arḍa aw yatiyahumu l-ʿadhābu min ḥaythu lā yashʿurūn

أَوۡ یَأۡخُذَهُمۡ فِی تَقَلُّبِهِمۡ فَمَا هُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ ۝٤٦

Or that He will not take them suddenly while they are coming and going-they being unable to escape him--

aw yakhudhahum fī taqallubihim famā hum bimuʿ'jizīn

أَوۡ یَأۡخُذَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ تَخَوُّفࣲ فَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمۡ لَرَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝٤٧

or that He will not take them gradually? Your Sustainer is most Merciful-to-all, a purveyor of mercy!

aw yakhudhahum ʿalā takhawwufin fa-inna rabbakum laraūfun raḥīmu

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ مِن شَیۡءࣲ یَتَفَیَّؤُا۟ ظِلَـٰلُهُۥ عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ وَٱلشَّمَاۤىِٕلِ سُجَّدࣰا لِّلَّهِ وَهُمۡ دَ ٰخِرُونَ ۝٤٨

Have they not, then, ever considered the things that God has created-how even their shadows turn right or left, prostrating themselves before God, being absolutely submissive to His will?

awalam yaraw ilā mā khalaqa l-lahu min shayin yatafayya-u ẓilāluhu ʿani l-yamīni wal-shamāili sujjadan lillahi wahum dākhirūn

وَ̅لِ̅لَّ̅هِ̅ ̅یَ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِن دَاۤبَّةࣲ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ وَهُمۡ لَا یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٤٩

For all that is in the heavens and on earth prostrates itself before God- every beast, and the angels- without any arrogance

walillahi yasjudu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi min dābbatin wal-malāikatu wahum lā yastakbirūn

یَخَافُونَ رَبَّهُم مِّن فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَیَفۡعَلُونَ مَا یُؤۡمَرُونَ ۝٥٠ ۩

They fear their Lord above them and do whatever they are commanded to do.

yakhāfūna rabbahum min fawqihim wayafʿalūna mā yu'marūn

7 Human Nature revolts against Polytheism

۞ وَقَالَ ٱللَّهُ لَا تَتَّخِذُوۤا۟ إِلَـٰهَیۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِۖ إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱ فَإِیَّـٰیَ فَٱرۡهَبُونِ ۝٥١

And God said, “Do not worship two deities. There is only One god, so it is Me that you shall revere.

waqāla l-lahu lā tattakhidhū ilāhayni ith'nayni innamā huwa ilāhun wāḥidun fa-iyyāya fa-ir'habūn

وَلَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَهُ ٱلدِّینُ وَاصِبًاۚ أَفَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ تَتَّقُونَ ۝٥٢

They show their ingratitude for all that We have done for them! So, go ahead, enjoy your brief life, but eventually you will come to know [the Truth]!

walahu mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walahu l-dīnu wāṣiban afaghayra l-lahi tattaqūn

وَمَا بِكُم مِّن نِّعۡمَةࣲ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِۖ ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ ٱلضُّرُّ فَإِلَیۡهِ تَجۡءَرُونَ ۝٥٣

They assign a share in what We have two deities. There is only One God, so it is Me that you shall revere.

wamā bikum min niʿ'matin famina l-lahi thumma idhā massakumu l-ḍuru fa-ilayhi tajarūn

ثُمَّ إِذَا كَشَفَ ٱلضُّرَّ عَنكُمۡ إِذَا فَرِیقࣱ مِّنكُم بِرَبِّهِمۡ یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٥٤

And to Him belongs all that is in heaven and on earth, and to Him alone be obedient, it is His right. Why, then, will you heed anyone but God?

thumma idhā kashafa l-ḍura ʿankum idhā farīqun minkum birabbihim yush'rikūn

لِیَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ فَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٥

For all good things come to you from God and whenever harm comes upon you, you cry to Him for help,

liyakfurū bimā ātaynāhum fatamattaʿū fasawfa taʿlamūn

وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِمَا لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ نَصِیبࣰا مِّمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡۗ تَٱللَّهِ لَتُسۡءَلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنتُمۡ تَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٥٦

but as soon as He has relieved you of your hardship, somegiven them for the [idols] about which they know nothing. By God, you will be asked about your lies!

wayajʿalūna limā lā yaʿlamūna naṣīban mimmā razaqnāhum tal-lahi latus'alunna ʿammā kuntum taftarūn

وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡبَنَـٰتِ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَلَهُم مَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٥٧

They also ascribe daughters to God-- May He be exalted in His glory--and they chose for themselves whatever they desire.

wayajʿalūna lillahi l-banāti sub'ḥānahu walahum mā yashtahūn

وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ظَلَّ وَجۡهُهُۥ مُسۡوَدࣰّا وَهُوَ كَظِیمࣱ ۝٥٨

Whenever one of them is given the good news of a daughter's birth, his face darkens and he fills with bottled-up anger.

wa-idhā bushira aḥaduhum bil-unthā ẓalla wajhuhu mus'waddan wahuwa kaẓīmu

یَتَوَ ٰرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ مِن سُوۤءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِۦۤۚ أَیُمۡسِكُهُۥ عَلَىٰ هُونٍ أَمۡ یَدُسُّهُۥ فِی ٱلتُّرَابِۗ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٥٩

Ashamed, he avoids people because of the supposed bad news he has received, [and he debates with himself] should he keep her despite the disgrace [which he feels] or should he bury her in the ground? How dreadful is their judgment.

yatawārā mina l-qawmi min sūi mā bushira bihi ayum'sikuhu ʿalā hūnin am yadussuhu fī l-turābi alā sāa mā yaḥkumūn

لِلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ مَثَلُ ٱلسَّوۡءِۖ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡمَثَلُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٦٠

Those who do not believe in the Hereafter set the worst example, whereas God sets the highest example, for He alone is Almighty and Wise!

lilladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati mathalu l-sawi walillahi l-mathalu l-aʿlā wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

8 Iniquity of Deniers

وَلَوۡ یُؤَاخِذُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّاسَ بِظُلۡمِهِم مَّا تَرَكَ عَلَیۡهَا مِن دَاۤبَّةࣲ وَلَـٰكِن یُؤَخِّرُهُمۡ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّىۖ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهُمۡ لَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ سَاعَةࣰ وَلَا یَسۡتَقۡدِمُونَ ۝٦١

Now if God were to judge men immediately for all the evil they do on earth, He would not leave a single living creature alive. However, He gives them relief until a time appointed by Him, but when the end of their time approaches, they can neither delay it by a single second, nor can they hasten it.

walaw yuākhidhu l-lahu l-nāsa biẓul'mihim mā taraka ʿalayhā min dābbatin walākin yu-akhiruhum ilā ajalin musamman fa-idhā jāa ajaluhum lā yastakhirūna sāʿatan walā yastaqdimūn

وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ مَا یَكۡرَهُونَۚ وَتَصِفُ أَلۡسِنَتُهُمُ ٱلۡكَذِبَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚ لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَ وَأَنَّهُم مُّفۡرَطُونَ ۝٦٢

They attribute to God what they dislike, and [all the while] their tongues utter the lie that they deserve the best. Truly, they deserve the Fire where they will be abandoned.

wayajʿalūna lillahi mā yakrahūna wataṣifu alsinatuhumu l-kadhiba anna lahumu l-ḥus'nā lā jarama anna lahumu l-nāra wa-annahum muf'raṭūn

تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أُمَمࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَزَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ فَهُوَ وَلِیُّهُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٦٣

By God, We sent messengers unto [various] nations before your time, but Satan made their own deeds look good to them, so he is their master now as before and painful punishment awaits them.

tal-lahi laqad arsalnā ilā umamin min qablika fazayyana lahumu l-shayṭānu aʿmālahum fahuwa waliyyuhumu l-yawma walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَمَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ إِلَّا لِتُبَیِّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ فِیهِ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٦٤

We sent down the Book to you, only to make clear to them the things about which they differ, and as guidance and mercy to people who will believe.

wamā anzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba illā litubayyina lahumu alladhī ikh'talafū fīhi wahudan waraḥmatan liqawmin yu'minūn

وَٱللَّهُ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَاۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٦٥

And it is God who sends down water giving life to the earth, even after it has been lifeless. In this is a sign to those who will listen.

wal-lahu anzala mina l-samāi māan fa-aḥyā bihi l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yasmaʿūn

9 Parables showing Truth of Revelation

وَإِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ لَعِبۡرَةࣰۖ نُّسۡقِیكُم مِّمَّا فِی بُطُونِهِۦ مِنۢ بَیۡنِ فَرۡثࣲ وَدَمࣲ لَّبَنًا خَالِصࣰا سَاۤىِٕغࣰا لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ ۝٦٦

And there is a lesson for you in the grazing cattle: We give you drink from what is in their bellies -between dung and their blood- pure milk, pleasant to those who drink it.

wa-inna lakum fī l-anʿāmi laʿib'ratan nus'qīkum mimmā fī buṭūnihi min bayni farthin wadamin labanan khāliṣan sāighan lilshāribīn

وَمِن ثَمَرَ ٰتِ ٱلنَّخِیلِ وَٱلۡأَعۡنَـٰبِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنۡهُ سَكَرࣰا وَرِزۡقًا حَسَنًاۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٧

And from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you obtain intoxicant as well as good provision. In this, too, there is a sign for people who think.

wamin thamarāti l-nakhīli wal-aʿnābi tattakhidhūna min'hu sakaran wariz'qan ḥasanan inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yaʿqilūn

وَأَوۡحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلنَّحۡلِ أَنِ ٱتَّخِذِی مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا وَمِنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا یَعۡرِشُونَ ۝٦٨

[And consider how] your Lord has so inspired the bee [saying]: "Prepare for yourself dwellings in mountains and in trees, and in what people may build,

wa-awḥā rabbuka ilā l-naḥli ani ittakhidhī mina l-jibāli buyūtan wamina l-shajari wamimmā yaʿrishūn

ثُمَّ كُلِی مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِ فَٱسۡلُكِی سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلࣰاۚ یَخۡرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابࣱ مُّخۡتَلِفٌ أَلۡوَ ٰنُهُۥ فِیهِ شِفَاۤءࣱ لِّلنَّاسِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٩

then eat all kinds of fruit, and follow humbly the paths ordained for you by your Lord." From there within these bees emerges a drink, of many colors, a healing food for man. In all this is a sign for people who reflect!

thumma kulī min kulli l-thamarāti fa-us'lukī subula rabbiki dhululan yakhruju min buṭūnihā sharābun mukh'talifun alwānuhu fīhi shifāon lilnnāsi inna fī dhālika laāyatan liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ ثُمَّ یَتَوَفَّىٰكُمۡۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن یُرَدُّ إِلَىٰۤ أَرۡذَلِ ٱلۡعُمُرِ لِكَیۡ لَا یَعۡلَمَ بَعۡدَ عِلۡمࣲ شَیۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمࣱ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٧٠

And God has created you, and in time you will die, and some of you will come to an abject state in old age, ceasing to know anything that you once knew. God is All-knowing, All- Powerful!

wal-lahu khalaqakum thumma yatawaffākum waminkum man yuraddu ilā ardhali l-ʿumuri likay lā yaʿlama baʿda ʿil'min shayan inna l-laha ʿalīmun qadīru

10 Recipient of Revelation

وَٱللَّهُ فَضَّلَ بَعۡضَكُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ فِی ٱلرِّزۡقِۚ فَمَا ٱلَّذِینَ فُضِّلُوا۟ بِرَاۤدِّی رِزۡقِهِمۡ عَلَىٰ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُمۡ فَهُمۡ فِیهِ سَوَاۤءٌۚ أَفَبِنِعۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِ یَجۡحَدُونَ ۝٧١

And God has favored some of you in abundance over others. But those so favored will not share their wealth with those their right hands hold in trust, so [their dependents] will not be their equals. Will they, then, renounce God's blessings?

wal-lahu faḍḍala baʿḍakum ʿalā baʿḍin fī l-riz'qi famā alladhīna fuḍḍilū birāddī riz'qihim ʿalā mā malakat aymānuhum fahum fīhi sawāon afabiniʿ'mati l-lahi yajḥadūn

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُم بَنِینَ وَحَفَدَةࣰ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِۚ أَفَبِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ یُؤۡمِنُونَ وَبِنِعۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ هُمۡ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٧٢

And God has given you wives from among yourselves, and has given you, through your wives, children and grandchildren, and has provided for you all of the good things of life. Will they, then, continue to believe in falsehood and reject God's blessings?

wal-lahu jaʿala lakum min anfusikum azwājan wajaʿala lakum min azwājikum banīna waḥafadatan warazaqakum mina l-ṭayibāti afabil-bāṭili yu'minūna wabiniʿ'mati l-lahi hum yakfurūn

وَیَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَمۡلِكُ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٧٣

And will they worship instead of God something that has no power whatsoever to provide them any sustenance from earth or heaven and can do nothing at all?

wayaʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi mā lā yamliku lahum riz'qan mina l-samāwāti wal-arḍi shayan walā yastaṭīʿūn

فَلَا تَضۡرِبُوا۟ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡأَمۡثَالَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ وَأَنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٤

So, do not propose examples of what God is like! God knows and you do not.

falā taḍribū lillahi l-amthāla inna l-laha yaʿlamu wa-antum lā taʿlamūn

۞ ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًا عَبۡدࣰا مَّمۡلُوكࣰا لَّا یَقۡدِرُ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءࣲ وَمَن رَّزَقۡنَـٰهُ مِنَّا رِزۡقًا حَسَنࣰا فَهُوَ یُنفِقُ مِنۡهُ سِرࣰّا وَجَهۡرًاۖ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوُۥنَۚ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٥

God set forth a parable [of two men]: one is a slave, unable to do anything of his own accord, and the other a [free] man to whom We have given ample wealth, so that he can spend at will, both secretly and openly. Can these two be considered equal? All praise is due to God, but most people do not know.

ḍaraba l-lahu mathalan ʿabdan mamlūkan lā yaqdiru ʿalā shayin waman razaqnāhu minnā riz'qan ḥasanan fahuwa yunfiqu min'hu sirran wajahran hal yastawūna l-ḥamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūn

وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلࣰا رَّجُلَیۡنِ أَحَدُهُمَاۤ أَبۡكَمُ لَا یَقۡدِرُ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءࣲ وَهُوَ كَلٌّ عَلَىٰ مَوۡلَىٰهُ أَیۡنَمَا یُوَجِّههُّ لَا یَأۡتِ بِخَیۡرٍ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوِی هُوَ وَمَن یَأۡمُرُ بِٱلۡعَدۡلِ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٧٦

And God provides another parable of two [other] men. One of them is mute, unable to do anything by himself, a burden to his caretaker. Whatever task he is directed to do, he accomplishes nothing beneficial. Can such a one be considered equal to one who commands justice [in his community], and is on the straight path?

waḍaraba l-lahu mathalan rajulayni aḥaduhumā abkamu lā yaqdiru ʿalā shayin wahuwa kallun ʿalā mawlāhu aynamā yuwajjihhu lā yati bikhayrin hal yastawī huwa waman yamuru bil-ʿadli wahuwa ʿalā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

11 Punishment withheld

وَلِلَّهِ غَیۡبُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَمَاۤ أَمۡرُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ إِلَّا كَلَمۡحِ ٱلۡبَصَرِ أَوۡ هُوَ أَقۡرَبُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٧٧

It is God alone who possesses the hidden reality of the heavens and the earth. The matter of the Last Hour will be like the twinkling of an eye, or closer still, for God has the power to will anything.

walillahi ghaybu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā amru l-sāʿati illā kalamḥi l-baṣari aw huwa aqrabu inna l-laha ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

وَٱللَّهُ أَخۡرَجَكُم مِّنۢ بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ وَٱلۡأَفۡءِدَةَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٧٨

And God brought you out of your mothers' wombs - knowing nothing, and He has endowed you with hearing, and sight, and minds so that you might have cause to be grateful.

wal-lahu akhrajakum min buṭūni ummahātikum lā taʿlamūna shayan wajaʿala lakumu l-samʿa wal-abṣāra wal-afidata laʿallakum tashkurūn

أَلَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلطَّیۡرِ مُسَخَّرَ ٰتࣲ فِی جَوِّ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَا یُمۡسِكُهُنَّ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٧٩

Have they not seen the birds, enabled by God to fly in mid-air, with none but God holding them aloft? In this there are messages for people who will believe!

alam yaraw ilā l-ṭayri musakharātin fī jawwi l-samāi mā yum'sikuhunna illā l-lahu inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yu'minūn

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنۢ بُیُوتِكُمۡ سَكَنࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّن جُلُودِ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ بُیُوتࣰا تَسۡتَخِفُّونَهَا یَوۡمَ ظَعۡنِكُمۡ وَیَوۡمَ إِقَامَتِكُمۡ وَمِنۡ أَصۡوَافِهَا وَأَوۡبَارِهَا وَأَشۡعَارِهَاۤ أَثَـٰثࣰا وَمَتَـٰعًا إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝٨٠

And God made your homes places to rest and enabled you to make dwellings from cattle hides-light, and easy to carry, whether you travel or camp, and [has supplied you with] furnishings and goods from the animals' rough and soft wool and its hair [to use] for a time.

wal-lahu jaʿala lakum min buyūtikum sakanan wajaʿala lakum min julūdi l-anʿāmi buyūtan tastakhiffūnahā yawma ẓaʿnikum wayawma iqāmatikum wamin aṣwāfihā wa-awbārihā wa-ashʿārihā athāthan wamatāʿan ilā ḥīni

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّمَّا خَلَقَ ظِلَـٰلࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ أَكۡنَـٰنࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمۡ سَرَ ٰبِیلَ تَقِیكُمُ ٱلۡحَرَّ وَسَرَ ٰبِیلَ تَقِیكُم بَأۡسَكُمۡۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُتِمُّ نِعۡمَتَهُۥ عَلَیۡكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٨١

And, from what He has created, God has provided you with protection; [He has given you] shade [from the sun], places of refuge in the mountains, and gave you garments to protect you from the heat, as well as garments to protect you from your brutality towards each other. In this way He perfects His blessings on you, so that you will surrender yourselves to Him.

wal-lahu jaʿala lakum mimmā khalaqa ẓilālan wajaʿala lakum mina l-jibāli aknānan wajaʿala lakum sarābīla taqīkumu l-ḥara wasarābīla taqīkum basakum kadhālika yutimmu niʿ'matahu ʿalaykum laʿallakum tus'limūn

فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٨٢

But if you they turn away [Prophet], remember that your only responsibility is to deliver this revelation clearly.

fa-in tawallaw fa-innamā ʿalayka l-balāghu l-mubīn

یَعۡرِفُونَ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ یُنكِرُونَهَا وَأَكۡثَرُهُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٨٣

They [who turn away] are fully aware of God's grace, but they nevertheless refuse to recognize it because they are used to denying the truth.

yaʿrifūna niʿ'mata l-lahi thumma yunkirūnahā wa-aktharuhumu l-kāfirūn

12 Prophets testify

وَیَوۡمَ نَبۡعَثُ مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ شَهِیدࣰا ثُمَّ لَا یُؤۡذَنُ لِلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَلَا هُمۡ یُسۡتَعۡتَبُونَ ۝٨٤

The Day [of Judgment] will come when We will raise up a witness from every nation. On that day, the unbelievers will not be able to make excuses or to make amends.

wayawma nabʿathu min kulli ummatin shahīdan thumma lā yu'dhanu lilladhīna kafarū walā hum yus'taʿtabūn

وَإِذَا رَءَا ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ فَلَا یُخَفَّفُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یُنظَرُونَ ۝٨٥

And when those who were unjust see the suffering that awaits them, they will recognize that the severity of their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be given any relief.

wa-idhā raā alladhīna ẓalamū l-ʿadhāba falā yukhaffafu ʿanhum walā hum yunẓarūn

وَإِذَا رَءَا ٱلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ شُرَكَاۤءَهُمۡ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ شُرَكَاۤؤُنَا ٱلَّذِینَ كُنَّا نَدۡعُوا۟ مِن دُونِكَۖ فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ إِلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ إِنَّكُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٨٦

And when those who associated other beings with God see those they associated, they will say, "Our Lord these are our associates whom we used to call upon apart from You." But they will throw their words back at them: "You are liars"

wa-idhā raā alladhīna ashrakū shurakāahum qālū rabbanā hāulāi shurakāunā alladhīna kunnā nadʿū min dūnika fa-alqaw ilayhimu l-qawla innakum lakādhibūn

وَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ ٱلسَّلَمَۖ وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٨٧

and on that day they will freely submit to God, and all their idols will forsake them.

wa-alqaw ilā l-lahi yawma-idhin l-salama waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn

ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ زِدۡنَـٰهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا فَوۡقَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یُفۡسِدُونَ ۝٨٨

We will heap punishment upon punishment on all the unbelievers who turned others away from God's path, in return for the corruption they caused.

alladhīna kafarū waṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi zid'nāhum ʿadhāban fawqa l-ʿadhābi bimā kānū yuf'sidūn

وَیَوۡمَ نَبۡعَثُ فِی كُلِّ أُمَّةࣲ شَهِیدًا عَلَیۡهِم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِهِمۡۖ وَجِئۡنَا بِكَ شَهِیدًا عَلَىٰ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِۚ وَنَزَّلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ تِبۡیَـٰنࣰا لِّكُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ وَبُشۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٨٩

On that day We will raise up from within each nation a witness against them, and We will bring you [Prophet] as a witness against them. We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good news to all who would surrender themselves to God [Muslims].

wayawma nabʿathu fī kulli ummatin shahīdan ʿalayhim min anfusihim waji'nā bika shahīdan ʿalā hāulāi wanazzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba tib'yānan likulli shayin wahudan waraḥmatan wabush'rā lil'mus'limīn

13 Revelation enjoins Good

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَأۡمُرُ بِٱلۡعَدۡلِ وَٱلۡإِحۡسَـٰنِ وَإِیتَاۤىِٕ ذِی ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَیَنۡهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡفَحۡشَاۤءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱلۡبَغۡیِۚ یَعِظُكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٩٠

God orders justice, good works, and generosity to relatives and He forbids vice, evil, and oppression. He warns you so that you will keep all this in mind.

inna l-laha yamuru bil-ʿadli wal-iḥ'sāni waītāi dhī l-qur'bā wayanhā ʿani l-faḥshāi wal-munkari wal-baghyi yaʿiẓukum laʿallakum tadhakkarūn

وَأَوۡفُوا۟ بِعَهۡدِ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا عَـٰهَدتُّمۡ وَلَا تَنقُضُوا۟ ٱلۡأَیۡمَـٰنَ بَعۡدَ تَوۡكِیدِهَا وَقَدۡ جَعَلۡتُمُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ كَفِیلًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٩١

Fulfill the covenant of God whenever you commit to one. Do not break your oaths once they are confirmed, and you [will] have made God your guarantor. God knows all that you do.

wa-awfū biʿahdi l-lahi idhā ʿāhadttum walā tanquḍū l-aymāna baʿda tawkīdihā waqad jaʿaltumu l-laha ʿalaykum kafīlan inna l-laha yaʿlamu mā tafʿalūn

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّتِی نَقَضَتۡ غَزۡلَهَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ قُوَّةٍ أَنكَـٰثࣰا تَتَّخِذُونَ أَیۡمَـٰنَكُمۡ دَخَلَۢا بَیۡنَكُمۡ أَن تَكُونَ أُمَّةٌ هِیَ أَرۡبَىٰ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍۚ إِنَّمَا یَبۡلُوكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦۚ وَلَیُبَیِّنَنَّ لَكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ مَا كُنتُمۡ فِیهِ تَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝٩٢

And do not be like the woman who untwisted the thread she had firmly spun just to unravel it-do not use your oaths as means to deceive one another, because some of you are more powerful than others. God is testing you through all this, and on the Day of Resurrection He will make clear to you those things about which you disagreed.

walā takūnū ka-allatī naqaḍat ghazlahā min baʿdi quwwatin ankāthan tattakhidhūna aymānakum dakhalan baynakum an takūna ummatun hiya arbā min ummatin innamā yablūkumu l-lahu bihi walayubayyinanna lakum yawma l-qiyāmati mā kuntum fīhi takhtalifūn

وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمۡ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ وَلَـٰكِن یُضِلُّ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَلَتُسۡءَلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٣

Had God so desired, he could surely have made you all the same nation, but He lets stray those who wish to reject His messages, and He guides rightly those who wish to be guided, and all of you will be called to account for all things you have done.

walaw shāa l-lahu lajaʿalakum ummatan wāḥidatan walākin yuḍillu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu walatus'alunna ʿammā kuntum taʿmalūn

وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَكُمۡ دَخَلَۢا بَیۡنَكُمۡ فَتَزِلَّ قَدَمُۢ بَعۡدَ ثُبُوتِهَا وَتَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلسُّوۤءَ بِمَا صَدَدتُّمۡ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَكُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝٩٤

So do not use your oaths as a means of deceiving each other- or else your foot will slide after having been firmly in place, and you will then taste the miserable consequences of your having turned from God's path and incredible suffering will await you.

walā tattakhidhū aymānakum dakhalan baynakum fatazilla qadamun baʿda thubūtihā watadhūqū l-sūa bimā ṣadadttum ʿan sabīli l-lahi walakum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

وَلَا تَشۡتَرُوا۟ بِعَهۡدِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنࣰا قَلِیلًاۚ إِنَّمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٩٥

Do not exchange the covenant of God for a small price. What is with God is best for you, if you only knew.

walā tashtarū biʿahdi l-lahi thamanan qalīlan innamā ʿinda l-lahi huwa khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūn

مَا عِندَكُمۡ یَنفَدُ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ بَاقࣲۗ وَلَنَجۡزِیَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوۤا۟ أَجۡرَهُم بِأَحۡسَنِ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦

All that you currently have will come to an end, but that which God has is eternal. And We will most certainly grant to those who were patient their reward according to the best they ever did.

mā ʿindakum yanfadu wamā ʿinda l-lahi bāqin walanajziyanna alladhīna ṣabarū ajrahum bi-aḥsani mā kānū yaʿmalūn

مَنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنࣱ فَلَنُحۡیِیَنَّهُۥ حَیَوٰةࣰ طَیِّبَةࣰۖ وَلَنَجۡزِیَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡرَهُم بِأَحۡسَنِ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٧

Whoever does good deeds, whether-man or woman-and is a believer, they will live a good life and will surely receive their reward in according with the best they have done.

man ʿamila ṣāliḥan min dhakarin aw unthā wahuwa mu'minun falanuḥ'yiyannahu ḥayatan ṭayyibatan walanajziyannahum ajrahum bi-aḥsani mā kānū yaʿmalūn

فَإِذَا قَرَأۡتَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ فَٱسۡتَعِذۡ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِیمِ ۝٩٨

When you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge with God from Satan, the rebel expelled from God's mercy

fa-idhā qarata l-qur'āna fa-is'taʿidh bil-lahi mina l-shayṭāni l-rajīm

إِنَّهُۥ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ سُلۡطَـٰنٌ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ ۝٩٩

He has no power over those who believe and who rely on their Lord.

innahu laysa lahu sul'ṭānun ʿalā alladhīna āmanū waʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūn

إِنَّمَا سُلۡطَـٰنُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَوَلَّوۡنَهُۥ وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِهِۦ مُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١٠٠

He has power only over those who ally themselves with him, and those who because of him associate others with God.

innamā sul'ṭānuhu ʿalā alladhīna yatawallawnahu wa-alladhīna hum bihi mush'rikūn

14 Qur'an not a Forgery

وَإِذَا بَدَّلۡنَاۤ ءَایَةࣰ مَّكَانَ ءَایَةࣲ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا یُنَزِّلُ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مُفۡتَرِۭۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٠١

And if we replace one revelation with another- and God knows best what he confers [from heaven]- they say, "You made it all up!" Truly, most of them have no understanding.

wa-idhā baddalnā āyatan makāna āyatin wal-lahu aʿlamu bimā yunazzilu qālū innamā anta muf'tarin bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūn

قُلۡ نَزَّلَهُۥ رُوحُ ٱلۡقُدُسِ مِن رَّبِّكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِیُثَبِّتَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهُدࣰى وَبُشۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝١٠٢

Tell them, "The Holy Spirit has revealed it from your Lord in Truth, so that it might strengthen the believers, providing guidance and good news to all who have surrendered themselves to God [Muslims]."

qul nazzalahu rūḥu l-qudusi min rabbika bil-ḥaqi liyuthabbita alladhīna āmanū wahudan wabush'rā lil'mus'limīn

وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا یُعَلِّمُهُۥ بَشَرࣱۗ لِّسَانُ ٱلَّذِی یُلۡحِدُونَ إِلَیۡهِ أَعۡجَمِیࣱّ وَهَـٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِیࣱّ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٠٣

And We certainly know well what they say, "It is only a human being who is telling him what to say." The language of the one they allude to is a foreign one whereas this is in clear and lucid Arabic.

walaqad naʿlamu annahum yaqūlūna innamā yuʿallimuhu basharun lisānu alladhī yul'ḥidūna ilayhi aʿjamiyyun wahādhā lisānun ʿarabiyyun mubīnu

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَا یَهۡدِیهِمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمٌ ۝١٠٤

Truly, as for those who refuse to believe God's revelations, God does not guide them, and grievous suffering will await them.

inna alladhīna lā yu'minūna biāyāti l-lahi lā yahdīhimu l-lahu walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

إِنَّمَا یَفۡتَرِی ٱلۡكَذِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٠٥

It is only they who refuse to believe God's revelations, who speak these lies, and it is they who are lying.

innamā yaftarī l-kadhiba alladhīna lā yu'minūna biāyāti l-lahi wa-ulāika humu l-kādhibūn

مَن كَفَرَ بِٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ إِیمَـٰنِهِۦۤ إِلَّا مَنۡ أُكۡرِهَ وَقَلۡبُهُۥ مُطۡمَىِٕنُّۢ بِٱلۡإِیمَـٰنِ وَلَـٰكِن مَّن شَرَحَ بِٱلۡكُفۡرِ صَدۡرࣰا فَعَلَیۡهِمۡ غَضَبࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٠٦

Whoever denies God after having once believed, [except for anyone who is forced to deny God while his heart remains true to his faith]- he who willingly opens up his heart to disbelief will have the wrath of God upon them and a grievous punishment awaiting them.

man kafara bil-lahi min baʿdi īmānihi illā man uk'riha waqalbuhu muṭ'ma-innun bil-īmāni walākin man sharaḥa bil-kuf'ri ṣadran faʿalayhim ghaḍabun mina l-lahi walahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ ٱسۡتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا عَلَى ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٠٧

That is because they favored this worldly life over the Hereafter, and because God will not guide unbelieving people

dhālika bi-annahumu is'taḥabbū l-ḥayata l-dun'yā ʿalā l-ākhirati wa-anna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-kāfirīn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَسَمۡعِهِمۡ وَأَبۡصَـٰرِهِمۡۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰفِلُونَ ۝١٠٨

The ones whose hearts, ears and eyes are sealed by God-it is they who are the heedless.

ulāika alladhīna ṭabaʿa l-lahu ʿalā qulūbihim wasamʿihim wa-abṣārihim wa-ulāika humu l-ghāfilūn

لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝١٠٩

No doubt they will be doomed in the life to come.

lā jarama annahum fī l-ākhirati humu l-khāsirūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِینَ هَاجَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا فُتِنُوا۟ ثُمَّ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ وَصَبَرُوۤا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهَا لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١١٠

As for those who migrated after they were persecuted and who then struggled and persevered, to them your Lord is so very forgiving, a purveyor of mercy!

thumma inna rabbaka lilladhīna hājarū min baʿdi mā futinū thumma jāhadū waṣabarū inna rabbaka min baʿdihā laghafūrun raḥīmu

15 Fate of Opponents

۞ یَوۡمَ تَأۡتِی كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ تُجَـٰدِلُ عَن نَّفۡسِهَا وَتُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّا عَمِلَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝١١١

On the Day when every soul will come to plead for itself, every soul will be fully rewarded for whatever it has done, and none will be wronged.

yawma tatī kullu nafsin tujādilu ʿan nafsihā watuwaffā kullu nafsin mā ʿamilat wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلࣰا قَرۡیَةࣰ كَانَتۡ ءَامِنَةࣰ مُّطۡمَىِٕنَّةࣰ یَأۡتِیهَا رِزۡقُهَا رَغَدࣰا مِّن كُلِّ مَكَانࣲ فَكَفَرَتۡ بِأَنۡعُمِ ٱللَّهِ فَأَذَ ٰقَهَا ٱللَّهُ لِبَاسَ ٱلۡجُوعِ وَٱلۡخَوۡفِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَصۡنَعُونَ ۝١١٢

And God proposes to you this parable: [Imagine, if you will,] a town that was once safe and secure, with its provisions coming to it abundantly from all places. Then it denied God's grace. So God caused it to experience all-encompassing misery-hunger and fear as a result of what they had done.

waḍaraba l-lahu mathalan qaryatan kānat āminatan muṭ'ma-innatan yatīhā riz'quhā raghadan min kulli makānin fakafarat bi-anʿumi l-lahi fa-adhāqahā l-lahu libāsa l-jūʿi wal-khawfi bimā kānū yaṣnaʿūn

وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ وَهُمۡ ظَـٰلِمُونَ ۝١١٣

And [imagine] that there had come a messenger from among them, but they denied him; so punishment overwhelmed them as they were unjust to themselves.

walaqad jāahum rasūlun min'hum fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu wahum ẓālimūn

فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ حَلَـٰلࣰا طَیِّبࣰا وَٱشۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ إِیَّاهُ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝١١٤

Then eat of the lawful and good things that God has provided for you. And be grateful for the blessing of God, if it is Him whom you worship.

fakulū mimmā razaqakumu l-lahu ḥalālan ṭayyiban wa-ush'kurū niʿ'mata l-lahi in kuntum iyyāhu taʿbudūn

إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡمَیۡتَةَ وَٱلدَّمَ وَلَحۡمَ ٱلۡخِنزِیرِ وَمَاۤ أُهِلَّ لِغَیۡرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦۖ فَمَنِ ٱضۡطُرَّ غَیۡرَ بَاغࣲ وَلَا عَادࣲ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١١٥

He has only prohibited you from eating carrion, and blood, and the flesh of pigs, and that which has been dedicated to other than God, unless one is compelled to eat it out of necessity, [and then] neither desiring it nor feeding to excess. Truly God is Merciful-to-all, the Mercy Giver.

innamā ḥarrama ʿalaykumu l-maytata wal-dama walaḥma l-khinzīri wamā uhilla lighayri l-lahi bihi famani uḍ'ṭurra ghayra bāghin walā ʿādin fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَا تَصِفُ أَلۡسِنَتُكُمُ ٱلۡكَذِبَ هَـٰذَا حَلَـٰلࣱ وَهَـٰذَا حَرَامࣱ لِّتَفۡتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ لَا یُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١١٦

So, do not lie by letting your tongues wag: "This is lawful and this is unlawful," thereby attributing your own lies to God. They who attribute their lies to God will never succeed!

walā taqūlū limā taṣifu alsinatukumu l-kadhiba hādhā ḥalālun wahādhā ḥarāmun litaftarū ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba inna alladhīna yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba lā yuf'liḥūn

مَتَـٰعࣱ قَلِیلࣱ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝١١٧

A brief enjoyment, but grievous punishment awaits them.

matāʿun qalīlun walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمۡنَا مَا قَصَصۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١١٨

We forbade to the Jews all that We have related to you previously. We did nothing wrong to them, but they wronged themselves.

waʿalā alladhīna hādū ḥarramnā mā qaṣaṣnā ʿalayka min qablu wamā ẓalamnāhum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِینَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسُّوۤءَ بِجَهَـٰلَةࣲ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَ ٰلِكَ وَأَصۡلَحُوۤا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهَا لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١١٩

Then to those who sin in ignorance and afterwards repent and live righteously, your Lord is Merciful-to-all, a purveyor of mercy.

thumma inna rabbaka lilladhīna ʿamilū l-sūa bijahālatin thumma tābū min baʿdi dhālika wa-aṣlaḥū inna rabbaka min baʿdihā laghafūrun raḥīmu

16 Way to Greatness

إِنَّ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ كَانَ أُمَّةࣰ قَانِتࣰا لِّلَّهِ حَنِیفࣰا وَلَمۡ یَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٢٠

Truly, Abraham was equal to a community in himself; he was devoted to obeying God. He turned from all that is wrong-and he was not among those idolaters

inna ib'rāhīma kāna ummatan qānitan lillahi ḥanīfan walam yaku mina l-mush'rikīn

شَاكِرࣰا لِّأَنۡعُمِهِۚ ٱجۡتَبَىٰهُ وَهَدَىٰهُ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝١٢١

He was grateful for the grace poured out on him by God-God had chosen him and guided him along a straight path.

shākiran li-anʿumihi ij'tabāhu wahadāhu ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣰۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٢٢

And so We granted him favor in this world: truly, in the life to come he will be among the righteous.

waātaynāhu fī l-dun'yā ḥasanatan wa-innahu fī l-ākhirati lamina l-ṣāliḥīn

ثُمَّ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ أَنِ ٱتَّبِعۡ مِلَّةَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ حَنِیفࣰاۖ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٢٣

And We have given you inspiration, [Prophet]: "Follow the faith of Abraham, who turned from every false thing, and who was not among the idolaters."

thumma awḥaynā ilayka ani ittabiʿ millata ib'rāhīma ḥanīfan wamā kāna mina l-mush'rikīn

إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ ٱلسَّبۡتُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ ٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ فِیهِۚ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَیَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٢٤

The Sabbath was made obligatory only on those who differed about it. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection regarding to all matters about which they differed.

innamā juʿila l-sabtu ʿalā alladhīna ikh'talafū fīhi wa-inna rabbaka layaḥkumu baynahum yawma l-qiyāmati fīmā kānū fīhi yakhtalifūn

ٱدۡعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِیلِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلۡحِكۡمَةِ وَٱلۡمَوۡعِظَةِ ٱلۡحَسَنَةِۖ وَجَـٰدِلۡهُم بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ ۝١٢٥

Call people to the path of your Lord with wisdom and good advice and argue with them in the most courteous way, for your Lord knows best who strays from His path, and knows best who is rightly guided.

ud'ʿu ilā sabīli rabbika bil-ḥik'mati wal-mawʿiẓati l-ḥasanati wajādil'hum bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bil-muh'tadīn

وَإِنۡ عَاقَبۡتُمۡ فَعَاقِبُوا۟ بِمِثۡلِ مَا عُوقِبۡتُم بِهِۦۖ وَلَىِٕن صَبَرۡتُمۡ لَهُوَ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٢٦

If you want to retaliate to an attack make your response proportionate. But if you can be patient, it is always better to be patient.

wa-in ʿāqabtum faʿāqibū bimith'li mā ʿūqib'tum bihi wala-in ṣabartum lahuwa khayrun lilṣṣābirīn

وَٱصۡبِرۡ وَمَا صَبۡرُكَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِۚ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا تَكُ فِی ضَیۡقࣲ مِّمَّا یَمۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢٧

[Prophet], be patient: your patience comes only from God. Do not grieve over the unbelievers, nor be distressed by their scheming,

wa-iṣ'bir wamā ṣabruka illā bil-lahi walā taḥzan ʿalayhim walā taku fī ḍayqin mimmā yamkurūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّٱلَّذِینَ هُم مُّحۡسِنُونَ ۝١٢٨

for, truly, God stands with those who are mindful of Him and who do good.

inna l-laha maʿa alladhīna ittaqaw wa-alladhīna hum muḥ'sinūn
