1 Invitation to Truth

تَنزِیلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢

A revelation from the Beneficent, the Merciful

tanzīlun mina l-raḥmāni l-raḥīm

كِتَـٰبࣱ فُصِّلَتۡ ءَایَـٰتُهُۥ قُرۡءَانًا عَرَبِیࣰّا لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣

A Book (Scripture) whereof the verses are expounded, an Arabic Quran (Lecture) for a people who understand

kitābun fuṣṣilat āyātuhu qur'ānan ʿarabiyyan liqawmin yaʿlamūn

بَشِیرࣰا وَنَذِیرࣰا فَأَعۡرَضَ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٤

Giving good news and a warning, but most of them turn aside so they hear not

bashīran wanadhīran fa-aʿraḍa aktharuhum fahum lā yasmaʿūn

وَقَالُوا۟ قُلُوبُنَا فِیۤ أَكِنَّةࣲ مِّمَّا تَدۡعُونَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ وَفِیۤ ءَاذَانِنَا وَقۡرࣱ وَمِنۢ بَیۡنِنَا وَبَیۡنِكَ حِجَابࣱ فَٱعۡمَلۡ إِنَّنَا عَـٰمِلُونَ ۝٥

And they say, "Our heart are under veils from that to which you call us, and there is a deafness in our ears, and a screen hangs between us and you. So do you (as you will), we too are doing (what we will)."

waqālū qulūbunā fī akinnatin mimmā tadʿūnā ilayhi wafī ādhāninā waqrun wamin bayninā wabaynika ḥijābun fa-iʿ'mal innanā ʿāmilūn

قُلۡ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیَّ أَنَّمَاۤ إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱ فَٱسۡتَقِیمُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوهُۗ وَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٦

Say (O Muhammad), "I am only a mortal like you; it is revealed to me that your God is one Allah, therefore follow the right way to Him and ask His forgiveness". And woe unto the idolaters (those who join gods with Allah)

qul innamā anā basharun mith'lukum yūḥā ilayya annamā ilāhukum ilāhun wāḥidun fa-is'taqīmū ilayhi wa-is'taghfirūhu wawaylun lil'mush'rikīn

ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَهُم بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٧

Those who give not regular charity and who deny the Hereafter

alladhīna lā yu'tūna l-zakata wahum bil-ākhirati hum kāfirūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَیۡرُ مَمۡنُونࣲ ۝٨

Those who believe and do good, they shall surely have a reward unfailing

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lahum ajrun ghayru mamnūni

2 The Warning

۞ قُلۡ أَىِٕنَّكُمۡ لَتَكۡفُرُونَ بِٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِی یَوۡمَیۡنِ وَتَجۡعَلُونَ لَهُۥۤ أَندَادࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩

Say, "What! Do you indeed disbelieve in Him Who created the earth in two Days (periods), and do you set up rivals with Him? He (none else) is the Lord of the Worlds

qul a-innakum latakfurūna bi-alladhī khalaqa l-arḍa fī yawmayni watajʿalūna lahu andādan dhālika rabbu l-ʿālamīn

وَجَعَلَ فِیهَا رَوَ ٰسِیَ مِن فَوۡقِهَا وَبَـٰرَكَ فِیهَا وَقَدَّرَ فِیهَاۤ أَقۡوَ ٰتَهَا فِیۤ أَرۡبَعَةِ أَیَّامࣲ سَوَاۤءࣰ لِّلسَّاۤىِٕلِینَ ۝١٠

And He made in it firm mountains rising above its surface, and He blessed the earth and measured therein the sustenance for all things in four Days (periods), alike (or in accordance with their needs) for all seekers

wajaʿala fīhā rawāsiya min fawqihā wabāraka fīhā waqaddara fīhā aqwātahā fī arbaʿati ayyāmin sawāan lilssāilīn

ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰۤ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَهِیَ دُخَانࣱ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَلِلۡأَرۡضِ ٱئۡتِیَا طَوۡعًا أَوۡ كَرۡهࣰا قَالَتَاۤ أَتَیۡنَا طَاۤىِٕعِینَ ۝١١

He directed Himself to the heaven when it was smoke (or gas), so He said unto it and unto the earth, "Come you together (or both), willingly or unwillingly." They both said, " We come in willing obedience."

thumma is'tawā ilā l-samāi wahiya dukhānun faqāla lahā walil'arḍi i'tiyā ṭawʿan aw karhan qālatā ataynā ṭāiʿīn

فَقَضَىٰهُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمَـٰوَاتࣲ فِی یَوۡمَیۡنِ وَأَوۡحَىٰ فِی كُلِّ سَمَاۤءٍ أَمۡرَهَاۚ وَزَیَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا بِمَصَـٰبِیحَ وَحِفۡظࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ تَقۡدِیرُ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡعَلِیمِ ۝١٢

So He ordained them seven heavens in two periods, and revealed in every heaven its affairs (duties and functions); and We adorned the lower heaven with brilliant stars and made it inviolable (guarded); that is the decree of the Mighty, the Knower

faqaḍāhunna sabʿa samāwātin fī yawmayni wa-awḥā fī kulli samāin amrahā wazayyannā l-samāa l-dun'yā bimaṣābīḥa waḥif'ẓan dhālika taqdīru l-ʿazīzi l-ʿalīm

فَإِنۡ أَعۡرَضُوا۟ فَقُلۡ أَنذَرۡتُكُمۡ صَـٰعِقَةࣰ مِّثۡلَ صَـٰعِقَةِ عَادࣲ وَثَمُودَ ۝١٣

But if they turn aside, then say: "I have warned you of a scourge like the scourge of A´ad and Thamud."

fa-in aʿraḍū faqul andhartukum ṣāʿiqatan mith'la ṣāʿiqati ʿādin wathamūd

إِذۡ جَاۤءَتۡهُمُ ٱلرُّسُلُ مِنۢ بَیۡنِ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوۤا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۖ قَالُوا۟ لَوۡ شَاۤءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنزَلَ مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰ فَإِنَّا بِمَاۤ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝١٤

When their messengers came to them from before them and from behind them, saying, "Serve nothing but Allah", they said, "If our Lord had pleased He would certainly have sent down angels, so we are surely unbelievers in that with which you

idh jāathumu l-rusulu min bayni aydīhim wamin khalfihim allā taʿbudū illā l-laha qālū law shāa rabbunā la-anzala malāikatan fa-innā bimā ur'sil'tum bihi kāfirūn

فَأَمَّا عَادࣱ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَقَالُوا۟ مَنۡ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةًۖ أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَهُمۡ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةࣰۖ وَكَانُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا یَجۡحَدُونَ ۝١٥

Then as to A´ad, they were unjustly arrogant in the land, and they said, "Who is mightier in strength than we?" Did they not see that Allah Who created them was mightier than they in strength? But they denied Our Signs

fa-ammā ʿādun fa-is'takbarū fī l-arḍi bighayri l-ḥaqi waqālū man ashaddu minnā quwwatan awalam yaraw anna l-laha alladhī khalaqahum huwa ashaddu min'hum quwwatan wakānū biāyātinā yajḥadūn

فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ رِیحࣰا صَرۡصَرࣰا فِیۤ أَیَّامࣲ نَّحِسَاتࣲ لِّنُذِیقَهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخِزۡیِ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَخۡزَىٰۖ وَهُمۡ لَا یُنصَرُونَ ۝١٦

So We sent on them a furious wind in disastrous days, that We may make them taste the torment of abasement in the life of the world. But verily, the chastisement of the Hereafter is much more shameful, and they shall not be helped

fa-arsalnā ʿalayhim rīḥan ṣarṣaran fī ayyāmin naḥisātin linudhīqahum ʿadhāba l-khiz'yi fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā walaʿadhābu l-ākhirati akhzā wahum lā yunṣarūn

وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَٱسۡتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلۡعَمَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمۡ صَـٰعِقَةُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡهُونِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝١٧

And as to Thamud, We showed them the right way, but they chose blindness (of heart) above guidance, so there overtook them the stunning (like a bolt of lightening) punishment of humiliation for what they earned

wa-ammā thamūdu fahadaynāhum fa-is'taḥabbū l-ʿamā ʿalā l-hudā fa-akhadhathum ṣāʿiqatu l-ʿadhābi l-hūni bimā kānū yaksibūn

وَنَجَّیۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ یَتَّقُونَ ۝١٨

And We delivered those who believed and did their duty to Allah

wanajjaynā alladhīna āmanū wakānū yattaqūn

3 Man's Evidence against Himself

وَیَوۡمَ یُحۡشَرُ أَعۡدَاۤءُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَهُمۡ یُوزَعُونَ ۝١٩

And on the day that the enemies of Allah shall be gathered into the fire, they will be marched in ranks

wayawma yuḥ'sharu aʿdāu l-lahi ilā l-nāri fahum yūzaʿūn

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا مَا جَاۤءُوهَا شَهِدَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ سَمۡعُهُمۡ وَأَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ وَجُلُودُهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٠

Until when they come to it, their ears and their eyes and their skins shall bear witness against them as to what they did

ḥattā idhā mā jāūhā shahida ʿalayhim samʿuhum wa-abṣāruhum wajulūduhum bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لِجُلُودِهِمۡ لِمَ شَهِدتُّمۡ عَلَیۡنَاۖ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنطَقَنَا ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنطَقَ كُلَّ شَیۡءࣲۚ وَهُوَ خَلَقَكُمۡ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةࣲ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٢١

And they shall say to their skins, "Why have you borne witness against us?" They shall say, "Allah Who gives speech to all things has given us speech, and He Who created you at first, unto Him you are returning

waqālū lijulūdihim lima shahidttum ʿalaynā qālū anṭaqanā l-lahu alladhī anṭaqa kulla shayin wahuwa khalaqakum awwala marratin wa-ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

وَمَا كُنتُمۡ تَسۡتَتِرُونَ أَن یَشۡهَدَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ سَمۡعُكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَبۡصَـٰرُكُمۡ وَلَا جُلُودُكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن ظَنَنتُمۡ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَعۡلَمُ كَثِیرࣰا مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٢

"And you did not hide yourselves lest your ears and your eyes and your skins should bear witness against you, but you thought that Allah did not know most of what you did

wamā kuntum tastatirūna an yashhada ʿalaykum samʿukum walā abṣārukum walā julūdukum walākin ẓanantum anna l-laha lā yaʿlamu kathīran mimmā taʿmalūn

وَذَ ٰلِكُمۡ ظَنُّكُمُ ٱلَّذِی ظَنَنتُم بِرَبِّكُمۡ أَرۡدَىٰكُمۡ فَأَصۡبَحۡتُم مِّنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٢٣

"And that it was your own thought which you entertained about your Lord that have brought you to ruin (or destruction, perdition), so you find yourselves this day among the lost

wadhālikum ẓannukumu alladhī ẓanantum birabbikum ardākum fa-aṣbaḥtum mina l-khāsirīn

فَإِن یَصۡبِرُوا۟ فَٱلنَّارُ مَثۡوࣰى لَّهُمۡۖ وَإِن یَسۡتَعۡتِبُوا۟ فَمَا هُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُعۡتَبِینَ ۝٢٤

Then though they are resigned, still the fire is their abode, and if they ask for favour, yet are they not of those unto whom favour can be shown

fa-in yaṣbirū fal-nāru mathwan lahum wa-in yastaʿtibū famā hum mina l-muʿ'tabīn

۞ وَقَیَّضۡنَا لَهُمۡ قُرَنَاۤءَ فَزَیَّنُوا۟ لَهُم مَّا بَیۡنَ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَمَا خَلۡفَهُمۡ وَحَقَّ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ فِیۤ أُمَمࣲ قَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ خَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٢٥

And We have appointed for them comrades (in the world) who made fair-seeming to them what is before them and what is behind them (in their future and their past). And the sentence concerning the nations of jinn and men that have passed away before them i

waqayyaḍnā lahum quranāa fazayyanū lahum mā bayna aydīhim wamā khalfahum waḥaqqa ʿalayhimu l-qawlu fī umamin qad khalat min qablihim mina l-jini wal-insi innahum kānū khāsirīn

4 Believers strengthened

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَا تَسۡمَعُوا۟ لِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ وَٱلۡغَوۡا۟ فِیهِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَغۡلِبُونَ ۝٢٦

And those who disbelieve say, "Do not listen to this Quran and do make a noise in the midst of its reading that you may overcome it."

waqāla alladhīna kafarū lā tasmaʿū lihādhā l-qur'āni wal-ghaw fīhi laʿallakum taghlibūn

فَلَنُذِیقَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدࣰا وَلَنَجۡزِیَنَّهُمۡ أَسۡوَأَ ٱلَّذِی كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٧

Therefore, We will certainly make those who disbelieve taste a severe punishment, and We will certainly requite them for the evil deeds they used to do

falanudhīqanna alladhīna kafarū ʿadhāban shadīdan walanajziyannahum aswa-a alladhī kānū yaʿmalūn

ذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَاۤءُ أَعۡدَاۤءِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلنَّارُۖ لَهُمۡ فِیهَا دَارُ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا یَجۡحَدُونَ ۝٢٨

That is the reward of the enemies of Allah - the Fire. Therein is their eternal home; the payment for denying Our signs

dhālika jazāu aʿdāi l-lahi l-nāru lahum fīhā dāru l-khul'di jazāan bimā kānū biāyātinā yajḥadūn

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّنَاۤ أَرِنَا ٱلَّذَیۡنِ أَضَلَّانَا مِنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِ نَجۡعَلۡهُمَا تَحۡتَ أَقۡدَامِنَا لِیَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِینَ ۝٢٩

And those who disbelieve will say, "Our Lord! Show us those who led us astray from among the jinn and men that we may trample them under our feet so that they may be of the lowest."

waqāla alladhīna kafarū rabbanā arinā alladhayni aḍallānā mina l-jini wal-insi najʿalhumā taḥta aqdāminā liyakūnā mina l-asfalīn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوا۟ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَقَـٰمُوا۟ تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا۟ وَلَا تَحۡزَنُوا۟ وَأَبۡشِرُوا۟ بِٱلۡجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِی كُنتُمۡ تُوعَدُونَ ۝٣٠

As for those who say, "Our Lord is Allah", then continue steadfast in righteousness, the angels descend upon them, saying, "Fear not, nor be grieved, and receive good news of the Garden which you were promised

inna alladhīna qālū rabbunā l-lahu thumma is'taqāmū tatanazzalu ʿalayhimu l-malāikatu allā takhāfū walā taḥzanū wa-abshirū bil-janati allatī kuntum tūʿadūn

نَحۡنُ أَوۡلِیَاۤؤُكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَفِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۖ وَلَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَا تَشۡتَهِیۤ أَنفُسُكُمۡ وَلَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَا تَدَّعُونَ ۝٣١

"We are your guardians in the life of this world and in the Hereafter, and you shall have therein what your souls desire and you shall have therein all you ask for

naḥnu awliyāukum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wafī l-ākhirati walakum fīhā mā tashtahī anfusukum walakum fīhā mā taddaʿūn

نُزُلࣰا مِّنۡ غَفُورࣲ رَّحِیمࣲ ۝٣٢

"A provision from the Forgiving, the Merciful."

nuzulan min ghafūrin raḥīmi

5 Effect of Revelation

وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ قَوۡلࣰا مِّمَّن دَعَاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٣٣

And who speaks better than he who calls to Allah while he himself does good, and says, "I am of those who Surrender (in Islam)"

waman aḥsanu qawlan mimman daʿā ilā l-lahi waʿamila ṣāliḥan waqāla innanī mina l-mus'limīn

وَلَا تَسۡتَوِی ٱلۡحَسَنَةُ وَلَا ٱلسَّیِّئَةُۚ ٱدۡفَعۡ بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُ فَإِذَا ٱلَّذِی بَیۡنَكَ وَبَیۡنَهُۥ عَدَ ٰوَةࣱ كَأَنَّهُۥ وَلِیٌّ حَمِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

And not alike are the good and the evil. Repel evil with what is best, when lo! He between whom and you was enmity would be as if he were an intimate friend

walā tastawī l-ḥasanatu walā l-sayi-atu id'faʿ bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu fa-idhā alladhī baynaka wabaynahu ʿadāwatun ka-annahu waliyyun ḥamīmu

وَمَا یُلَقَّىٰهَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَمَا یُلَقَّىٰهَاۤ إِلَّا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِیمࣲ ۝٣٥

And none are granted this power but those who possess patience and self-restraint, and none are granted it but the owners of great happiness

wamā yulaqqāhā illā alladhīna ṣabarū wamā yulaqqāhā illā dhū ḥaẓẓin ʿaẓīmi

وَإِمَّا یَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ نَزۡغࣱ فَٱسۡتَعِذۡ بِٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٣٦

And if a whisper (incitement or interference) of the Satan should cause you mischief, then seek refuge in Allah; surely He is the Hearer, the Knower

wa-immā yanzaghannaka mina l-shayṭāni nazghun fa-is'taʿidh bil-lahi innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِ ٱلَّیۡلُ وَٱلنَّهَارُ وَٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُۚ لَا تَسۡجُدُوا۟ لِلشَّمۡسِ وَلَا لِلۡقَمَرِ وَ̅ٱ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅و̅ا۟̅ ̅لِ̅لَّ̅هِ̅ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَهُنَّ إِن كُنتُمۡ إِیَّاهُ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٣٧

And among His signs are the night and the day and the sun and the moon. Make not obeisance to the sun nor to the moon; but make obeisance to Allah Who created them, if Him it is that you serve

wamin āyātihi al-laylu wal-nahāru wal-shamsu wal-qamaru lā tasjudū lilshamsi walā lil'qamari wa-us'judū lillahi alladhī khalaqahunna in kuntum iyyāhu taʿbudūn

فَإِنِ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ فَٱلَّذِینَ عِندَ رَبِّكَ یُسَبِّحُونَ لَهُۥ بِٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَهُمۡ لَا یَسۡءَمُونَ ۝٣٨ ۩

But if they are too proud, yet those who are with your Lord glorify Him night and the day, and tire not

fa-ini is'takbarū fa-alladhīna ʿinda rabbika yusabbiḥūna lahu bi-al-layli wal-nahāri wahum lā yasamūn

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤ أَنَّكَ تَرَى ٱلۡأَرۡضَ خَـٰشِعَةࣰ فَإِذَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهَا ٱلۡمَاۤءَ ٱهۡتَزَّتۡ وَرَبَتۡۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَحۡیَاهَا لَمُحۡیِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرٌ ۝٣٩

And among His signs is this, that you see the earth barren and desolate, but when We send down on it the rain, it stirs to life and swells into growth: verily He Who gives it life is the Quickener of the dead; surely He has power over all things

wamin āyātihi annaka tarā l-arḍa khāshiʿatan fa-idhā anzalnā ʿalayhā l-māa ih'tazzat warabat inna alladhī aḥyāhā lamuḥ'yī l-mawtā innahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُلۡحِدُونَ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِنَا لَا یَخۡفَوۡنَ عَلَیۡنَاۤۗ أَفَمَن یُلۡقَىٰ فِی ٱلنَّارِ خَیۡرٌ أَم مَّن یَأۡتِیۤ ءَامِنࣰا یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ ٱعۡمَلُوا۟ مَا شِئۡتُمۡ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِیرٌ ۝٤٠

Surely they who distort Our revelations are not hidden from Us. What! Is he, then, who is cast into the Fire better, or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do what you like, surely He is Seer of what you do

inna alladhīna yul'ḥidūna fī āyātinā lā yakhfawna ʿalaynā afaman yul'qā fī l-nāri khayrun am man yatī āminan yawma l-qiyāmati iʿ'malū mā shi'tum innahu bimā taʿmalūna baṣīru

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱلذِّكۡرِ لَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمۡۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَكِتَـٰبٌ عَزِیزࣱ ۝٤١

Surely those who disbelieve in the Reminder when it comes to them (are losers, for most surely it is a Book of exalted power

inna alladhīna kafarū bil-dhik'ri lammā jāahum wa-innahu lakitābun ʿazīzu

لَّا یَأۡتِیهِ ٱلۡبَـٰطِلُ مِنۢ بَیۡنِ یَدَیۡهِ وَلَا مِنۡ خَلۡفِهِۦۖ تَنزِیلࣱ مِّنۡ حَكِیمٍ حَمِیدࣲ ۝٤٢

Falsehood shall not come to it from before it nor from behind it, a revelation from the Wise, the Owner of Praise

lā yatīhi l-bāṭilu min bayni yadayhi walā min khalfihi tanzīlun min ḥakīmin ḥamīdi

مَّا یُقَالُ لَكَ إِلَّا مَا قَدۡ قِیلَ لِلرُّسُلِ مِن قَبۡلِكَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُو مَغۡفِرَةࣲ وَذُو عِقَابٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٤٣

Naught is said unto you (O Muhammad) but what was said unto the messengers before you; surely your Lord is the Lord of Forgiveness and the Lord of dire Retribution

mā yuqālu laka illā mā qad qīla lilrrusuli min qablika inna rabbaka ladhū maghfiratin wadhū ʿiqābin alīmi

وَلَوۡ جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَانًا أَعۡجَمِیࣰّا لَّقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا فُصِّلَتۡ ءَایَـٰتُهُۥۤۖ ءَا۬عۡجَمِیࣱّ وَعَرَبِیࣱّۗ قُلۡ هُوَ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ هُدࣰى وَشِفَاۤءࣱۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ فِیۤ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَقۡرࣱ وَهُوَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ عَمًىۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یُنَادَوۡنَ مِن مَّكَانِۭ بَعِیدࣲ ۝٤٤

And if We had made it a Lecture (Quran) in a foreign tongue, they would certainly have said, "Why have not its verses been explained clearly? What! A foreign (tongue) and an Arab (messenger)!" Say, "It is to those who believe, a guidance a

walaw jaʿalnāhu qur'ānan aʿjamiyyan laqālū lawlā fuṣṣilat āyātuhu āʿ'jamiyyun waʿarabiyyun qul huwa lilladhīna āmanū hudan washifāon wa-alladhīna lā yu'minūna fī ādhānihim waqrun wahuwa ʿalayhim ʿaman ulāika yunādawna min makānin baʿīdi

6 Gradual Spread of Truth

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ فَٱخۡتُلِفَ فِیهِۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةࣱ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَفِی شَكࣲّ مِّنۡهُ مُرِیبࣲ ۝٤٥

And certainly We gave the Book to Moses, but dispute arose therein. Had not a word already gone forth from your Lord, judgment would certainly have been given ere now between them (the disputers); and lo! They are in hopeless doubt about it

walaqad ātaynā mūsā l-kitāba fa-ukh'tulifa fīhi walawlā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika laquḍiya baynahum wa-innahum lafī shakkin min'hu murībi

مَّنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَنۡ أَسَاۤءَ فَعَلَیۡهَاۗ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّـٰمࣲ لِّلۡعَبِیدِ ۝٤٦

Whoever does good, it is for the good his own soul, and whoever does wrong, it is against it; and your Lord is not in the least unjust (or tyrannical) to His servants

man ʿamila ṣāliḥan falinafsihi waman asāa faʿalayhā wamā rabbuka biẓallāmin lil'ʿabīd

۞ إِلَیۡهِ یُرَدُّ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِۚ وَمَا تَخۡرُجُ مِن ثَمَرَ ٰتࣲ مِّنۡ أَكۡمَامِهَا وَمَا تَحۡمِلُ مِنۡ أُنثَىٰ وَلَا تَضَعُ إِلَّا بِعِلۡمِهِۦۚ وَیَوۡمَ یُنَادِیهِمۡ أَیۡنَ شُرَكَاۤءِی قَالُوۤا۟ ءَاذَنَّـٰكَ مَامِنَّا مِن شَهِیدࣲ ۝٤٧

To Him is referred the knowledge of the Hour (of Judgment), and no fruits comes forth from their coverings, nor does a female bear or give birth, but with His knowledge. And on the Day when He shall call unto them, "Where are (those whom you called)

ilayhi yuraddu ʿil'mu l-sāʿati wamā takhruju min thamarātin min akmāmihā wamā taḥmilu min unthā walā taḍaʿu illā biʿil'mihi wayawma yunādīhim ayna shurakāī qālū ādhannāka mā minnā min shahīdi

وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَدۡعُونَ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَظَنُّوا۟ مَا لَهُم مِّن مَّحِیصࣲ ۝٤٨

And away from them shall go what they called upon before, and they shall know for certain that there is no escape for them

waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yadʿūna min qablu waẓannū mā lahum min maḥīṣi

لَّا یَسۡءَمُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ مِن دُعَاۤءِ ٱلۡخَیۡرِ وَإِن مَّسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ فَیَءُوسࣱ قَنُوطࣱ ۝٤٩

Man is never tired of praying for good, and if evil touch him, then he is despairing, hopeless

lā yasamu l-insānu min duʿāi l-khayri wa-in massahu l-sharu fayaūsun qanūṭu

وَلَىِٕنۡ أَذَقۡنَـٰهُ رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّنَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ضَرَّاۤءَ مَسَّتۡهُ لَیَقُولَنَّ هَـٰذَا لِی وَمَاۤ أَظُنُّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ قَاۤىِٕمَةࣰ وَلَىِٕن رُّجِعۡتُ إِلَىٰ رَبِّیۤ إِنَّ لِی عِندَهُۥ لَلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚ فَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَلَنُذِیقَنَّهُم مِّنۡ عَذَابٍ غَلِیظࣲ ۝٥٠

And verily, if We make him taste mercy from Us after distress that has touched him, he would say, "This is of me, and I do not think the Hour will come to pass, and if I am sent back to my Lord, I shall have with Him sure good." But We will mos

wala-in adhaqnāhu raḥmatan minnā min baʿdi ḍarrāa massathu layaqūlanna hādhā lī wamā aẓunnu l-sāʿata qāimatan wala-in rujiʿ'tu ilā rabbī inna lī ʿindahu lalḥus'nā falanunabbi-anna alladhīna kafarū bimā ʿamilū walanudhīqannahum min ʿadhābin ghalīẓi

وَإِذَاۤ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ أَعۡرَضَ وَنَءَا بِجَانِبِهِۦ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ فَذُو دُعَاۤءٍ عَرِیضࣲ ۝٥١

And when We show favour to man, he turns aside and withdraws himself; and when evil touches him, he makes lengthy supplications

wa-idhā anʿamnā ʿalā l-insāni aʿraḍa wanaā bijānibihi wa-idhā massahu l-sharu fadhū duʿāin ʿarīḍi

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ كَفَرۡتُم بِهِۦ مَنۡ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنۡ هُوَ فِی شِقَاقِۭ بَعِیدࣲ ۝٥٢

Say, "Bethink you: if it is from Allah and you reject it, who is in greater error than he who is in open feud (or schism or opposition)

qul ara-aytum in kāna min ʿindi l-lahi thumma kafartum bihi man aḍallu mimman huwa fī shiqāqin baʿīdi

سَنُرِیهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فِی ٱلۡءَافَاقِ وَفِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ حَتَّىٰ یَتَبَیَّنَ لَهُمۡ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡحَقُّۗ أَوَ لَمۡ یَكۡفِ بِرَبِّكَ أَنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ شَهِیدٌ ۝٥٣

We will soon show them Our signs on the horizons (in the Universe) and within themselves (or their own souls), until it become manifest unto them that it is the truth. Is not your Lord sufficient , since He is Witness over all things

sanurīhim āyātinā fī l-āfāqi wafī anfusihim ḥattā yatabayyana lahum annahu l-ḥaqu awalam yakfi birabbika annahu ʿalā kulli shayin shahīdu

أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُمۡ فِی مِرۡیَةࣲ مِّن لِّقَاۤءِ رَبِّهِمۡۗ أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُۥ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مُّحِیطُۢ ۝٥٤

What! Are they still in doubt about the meeting with their Lord? What! Does He not encompass (surround and penetrate) all things

alā innahum fī mir'yatin min liqāi rabbihim alā innahu bikulli shayin muḥīṭu
