1 The Clot

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

Read in the name of your Lord Who has created you

Iqra/ bi-ismi rabbika allathee khalaqa

خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

God is the One Who created you from a small piece of thick blood (tiny embryo)

Khalaqa al-insana min AAalaqin

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ

Read and praise your Lord Who…

Iqra/ warabbuka al-akramu

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ

.. taught you how to use the pen [and in this way separated you from other animals who cannot use the pen]

Allathee AAallama bialqalami

عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

[Be grateful to your] Lord Who taught man what he did not know before

AAallama al-insana ma lam yaAAlam

كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ

What a shame that mankind is ungrateful and…

Kalla inna al-insana layatgha

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

… thinks that he is not in need of his Lord and that he has power to do everything

An raahu istaghna

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ

Beware mankind that one day you have to meet your creator

Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَىٰ

Have you seen the one who…

Araayta allathee yanha

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰ

… prevents his subordinates to worship the Lord? [Like those who do not let people pray at schools or at work place]

AAabdan itha salla

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ

Does it not make sense to such a person…

Araayta in kana AAala alhuda

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَىٰ

… to be on the right path and advocate righteousness

Aw amara bialttaqwa

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

How dare he to turn his back to the truth (Qur’an)

Araayta in kaththaba watawalla

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

Does not such a person know that God is watching

Alam yaAAlam bi-anna Allaha yara

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ

Let him [Abu Jahl the most persistent enemy of Islam] know that…

Kalla la-in lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati

نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

… if he continues his animosity toward Islam, I (God) will grab him by his lying, sinful forehead to the fire

Nasiyatin kathibatin khati-atin</b

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ

While he is being dragged to fire,…

FalyadAAu nadiyahu

سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ

… let him call upon his supporters to meet God’s supporters (angles of punishment)

SanadAAu alzzabaniyata

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب

Do not follow the enemies of Islam; follow your Lord and fall down prostrate in adoration and draw yourself in this way closer and closer to your Lor

Kalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib
