1 The Clot

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Read in the name of your Lord who created!

Iqra/ bi-ismi rabbika allathee khalaqa

خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

Linda "iLham" Barto

[He] created the human from a clinging mass.

Khalaqa al-insana min AAalaqin

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Read! Your Lord is Most Bountiful.

Iqra/ warabbuka al-akramu

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ

Linda "iLham" Barto

He taught by the pen.

Allathee AAallama bialqalami

عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

Linda "iLham" Barto

[He] taught the human what he/she did not know.

AAallama al-insana ma lam yaAAlam

كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Alas! The human is bound to sin.

Kalla inna al-insana layatgha

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

[Humanity] looks upon itself as independent.

An raahu istaghna

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Truly, to your Lord is the return.

Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Do you see anyone trying to prevent…

Araayta allathee yanha

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

…a servant [of Allah] from praying?

AAabdan itha salla

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Do you see whether he/she has guidance…

Araayta in kana AAala alhuda

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

…and directs righteousness?

Aw amara bialttaqwa

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Do you see if he/she rejects and turns away?

Araayta in kaththaba watawalla

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Does he/she not know that Allah sees?

Alam yaAAlam bi-anna Allaha yara

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Let him/her beware! If he/she does not desist, We will drag him/her by the frontal lobes.

Kalla la-in lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati

نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

Linda "iLham" Barto

[They are] lying, sinful frontal lobes.

Nasiyatin kathibatin khati-atin</b

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ

Linda "iLham" Barto

Then let him/her call to his/her associates.

FalyadAAu nadiyahu

سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ

Linda "iLham" Barto

We will call on the angels of punishment.

SanadAAu alzzabaniyata

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب

Linda "iLham" Barto

Beware! Do not obey him/her. Prostrate in adoration. Bring yourself closer [to Allah].

Kalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib
