1 The Clot

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

Read, in the name of thy Lord, Who hath created all things

Iqra/ bi-ismi rabbika allathee khalaqa

خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

who hath created man of congealed blood

Khalaqa al-insana min AAalaqin

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ

Read, by thy most beneficent Lord

Iqra/ warabbuka al-akramu

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ

Who taught the use of the pen

Allathee AAallama bialqalami

عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

Who teacheth man that which he knoweth not

AAallama al-insana ma lam yaAAlam

كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ

Assuredly. Verily man becometh insolent

Kalla inna al-insana layatgha

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

because he seeth himself abound in riches

An raahu istaghna

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ

Verily unto thy Lord shall be the return of all

Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَىٰ

What thinkest thou as to hi

Araayta allathee yanha

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰ

who forbiddeth our servant, when he prayeth

AAabdan itha salla

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ

What thinkest thou; if he follow the right direction

Araayta in kana AAala alhuda

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَىٰ

or command piety

Aw amara bialttaqwa

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

What thinkest thou; if he accuse the divine revelations of falsehood, and turn his back

Araayta in kaththaba watawalla

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

Doth he not know that God seeth

Alam yaAAlam bi-anna Allaha yara

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ

Assuredly. Verily, if he forbear not, We will drag him by the forelock

Kalla la-in lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati

نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

the lying, sinful forelock

Nasiyatin kathibatin khati-atin</b

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ

And let him call his council to his assistance

FalyadAAu nadiyahu

سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ

We also will call the infernal guards to cast him into hell

SanadAAu alzzabaniyata

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب

Assuredly. Obey him not: But continue to adore God; and draw nigh unto Him

Kalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib
