Verse 26:139 in Context

135 إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥ innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi for I truly fear that the torment of a grievous day will overtake you.’ 136 قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦ qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn They replied, ‘It makes no difference to us whether you warn us or not 137 إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧ in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn for we only do what our forefathers used to do 138 وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨ wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn we shall not be punished.’
139 فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩ fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn They denounced him as a liar, and so We destroyed them. There truly is a sign in this, though most of them do not believe
140 وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠ wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm your Lord alone is the Almighty, the Merciful 141 كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١ kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn The people of Thamud, too, called the messengers liars 142 إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢ idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn Their brother Salih said to them, ‘Will you not be mindful of God 143 إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣ innī lakum rasūlun amīnu I am a faithful messenger to you
