1 Truth of Revelation

الۤمۤرۚ تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِۗ وَٱلَّذِیۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١

N J Dawood 2014

ALIF lām mīm rā‘. These are the revelations of the Book: and that which has been revealed to you from your Lord is Truth, yet most do not believe

alif-lam-meem-ra til'ka āyātu l-kitābi wa-alladhī unzila ilayka min rabbika l-ḥaqu walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yu'minūn

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی رَفَعَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ بِغَیۡرِ عَمَدࣲ تَرَوۡنَهَاۖ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ كُلࣱّ یَجۡرِی لِأَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّىۚ یُدَبِّرُ ٱلۡأَمۡرَ یُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُم بِلِقَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمۡ تُوقِنُونَ ۝٢

It was God who raised the heavens without visible pillars. He then ascended the throne and pressed the sun and the moon into service, each pursuing an appointed course. He ordains all things: He makes plain His revelations, so that you may firmly believe in meeting your Lord

al-lahu alladhī rafaʿa l-samāwāti bighayri ʿamadin tarawnahā thumma is'tawā ʿalā l-ʿarshi wasakhara l-shamsa wal-qamara kullun yajrī li-ajalin musamman yudabbiru l-amra yufaṣṣilu l-āyāti laʿallakum biliqāi rabbikum tūqinūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی مَدَّ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَجَعَلَ فِیهَا رَوَ ٰسِیَ وَأَنۡهَـٰرࣰاۖ وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِ جَعَلَ فِیهَا زَوۡجَیۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِۖ یُغۡشِی ٱلَّیۡلَ ٱلنَّهَارَۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٣

It was He who spread out the earth and placed upon it mountains and rivers. He gave all plants their male and female parts and drew the veil of night over the day. Surely in these there are signs for people who reflect

wahuwa alladhī madda l-arḍa wajaʿala fīhā rawāsiya wa-anhāran wamin kulli l-thamarāti jaʿala fīhā zawjayni ith'nayni yugh'shī al-layla l-nahāra inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَفِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ قِطَعࣱ مُّتَجَـٰوِرَ ٰتࣱ وَجَنَّـٰتࣱ مِّنۡ أَعۡنَـٰبࣲ وَزَرۡعࣱ وَنَخِیلࣱ صِنۡوَانࣱ وَغَیۡرُ صِنۡوَانࣲ یُسۡقَىٰ بِمَاۤءࣲ وَ ٰحِدࣲ وَنُفَضِّلُ بَعۡضَهَا عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ فِی ٱلۡأُكُلِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤

And in the land there are adjoining plots: vineyards and cornfields and groves of palm, the single and the clustered. Their fruits are nourished by the same water: yet We make the taste of some more favoured than the taste of others. Surely in this there are signs for people who understand

wafī l-arḍi qiṭaʿun mutajāwirātun wajannātun min aʿnābin wazarʿun wanakhīlun ṣin'wānun waghayru ṣin'wānin yus'qā bimāin wāḥidin wanufaḍḍilu baʿḍahā ʿalā baʿḍin fī l-ukuli inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yaʿqilūn

۞ وَإِن تَعۡجَبۡ فَعَجَبࣱ قَوۡلُهُمۡ أَءِذَا كُنَّا تُرَ ٰبًا أَءِنَّا لَفِی خَلۡقࣲ جَدِیدٍۗ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلۡأَغۡلَـٰلُ فِیۤ أَعۡنَاقِهِمۡۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٥

If anything could make you marvel, then you should surely marvel at those who say: ‘When we are dust, shall we be restored in a new creation?‘ Such are those who deny their Lord. Their necks shall be bound with chains. Those are the tenants of the Fire, wherein shall they abide for ever

wa-in taʿjab faʿajabun qawluhum a-idhā kunnā turāban a-innā lafī khalqin jadīdin ulāika alladhīna kafarū birabbihim wa-ulāika l-aghlālu fī aʿnāqihim wa-ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

وَیَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَكَ بِٱلسَّیِّئَةِ قَبۡلَ ٱلۡحَسَنَةِ وَقَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِن قَبۡلِهِمُ ٱلۡمَثُلَـٰتُۗ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُو مَغۡفِرَةࣲ لِّلنَّاسِ عَلَىٰ ظُلۡمِهِمۡۖ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَشَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝٦

N J Dawood 2014

And they bid you hasten evil rather than good. Yet many were those who were punished before them. Your Lord is forgiving to people, despite their wrongdoing: yet stern is your Lord in retribution

wayastaʿjilūnaka bil-sayi-ati qabla l-ḥasanati waqad khalat min qablihimu l-mathulātu wa-inna rabbaka ladhū maghfiratin lilnnāsi ʿalā ẓul'mihim wa-inna rabbaka lashadīdu l-ʿiqāb

وَیَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۤۗ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مُنذِرࣱۖ وَلِكُلِّ قَوۡمٍ هَادٍ ۝٧

And the unbelievers say: ‘Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?‘ But you are only to give warning: every nation has its mentor

wayaqūlu alladhīna kafarū lawlā unzila ʿalayhi āyatun min rabbihi innamā anta mundhirun walikulli qawmin hādi

2 Fall and Rise of Nations

ٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تَحۡمِلُ كُلُّ أُنثَىٰ وَمَا تَغِیضُ ٱلۡأَرۡحَامُ وَمَا تَزۡدَادُۚ وَكُلُّ شَیۡءٍ عِندَهُۥ بِمِقۡدَارٍ ۝٨

God knows what every female bears: He knows the wombs whose term falls short, and those that signify increase. For everything He has a finite measure

al-lahu yaʿlamu mā taḥmilu kullu unthā wamā taghīḍu l-arḥāmu wamā tazdādu wakullu shayin ʿindahu bimiq'dāri

عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ ٱلۡكَبِیرُ ٱلۡمُتَعَالِ ۝٩

He knows the unknown and the manifest: the Supreme One, the Most High

sawāon minkum man asarra l-qawla waman jahara bihi waman huwa mus'takhfin bi-al-layli wasāribun bil-nahār

سَوَاۤءࣱ مِّنكُم مَّنۡ أَسَرَّ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ وَمَن جَهَرَ بِهِۦ وَمَنۡ هُوَ مُسۡتَخۡفِۭ بِٱلَّیۡلِ وَسَارِبُۢ بِٱلنَّهَارِ ۝١٠

It is the same whether you converse in secret or aloud, whether you hide under the cloak of night or walk about in the light of day

Sawaon minkum man asarra alqawla waman jahara bihi waman huwa mustakhfin biallayli wasaribun bialnnahari

لَهُۥ مُعَقِّبَـٰتࣱ مِّنۢ بَیۡنِ یَدَیۡهِ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِۦ یَحۡفَظُونَهُۥ مِنۡ أَمۡرِ ٱللَّهِۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُغَیِّرُ مَا بِقَوۡمٍ حَتَّىٰ یُغَیِّرُوا۟ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمۡۗ وَإِذَاۤ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِقَوۡمࣲ سُوۤءࣰا فَلَا مَرَدَّ لَهُۥۚ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِۦ مِن وَالٍ ۝١١

Each has guardian angels before him and behind him, who preserve him by God‘s command. God does not change a people‘s lot unless they change what is in their hearts. If God seeks to afflict them with a misfortune, none can ward it off. Besides Him, they have no protector

lahu muʿaqqibātun min bayni yadayhi wamin khalfihi yaḥfaẓūnahu min amri l-lahi inna l-laha lā yughayyiru mā biqawmin ḥattā yughayyirū mā bi-anfusihim wa-idhā arāda l-lahu biqawmin sūan falā maradda lahu wamā lahum min dūnihi min wāli

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُرِیكُمُ ٱلۡبَرۡقَ خَوۡفࣰا وَطَمَعࣰا وَیُنشِئُ ٱلسَّحَابَ ٱلثِّقَالَ ۝١٢

He it is who makes the lightning flash upon you, inspiring you with fear and hope, and gathers up the heavy clouds

huwa alladhī yurīkumu l-barqa khawfan waṭamaʿan wayunshi-u l-saḥāba l-thiqāl

وَیُسَبِّحُ ٱلرَّعۡدُ بِحَمۡدِهِۦ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ مِنۡ خِیفَتِهِۦ وَیُرۡسِلُ ٱلصَّوَ ٰعِقَ فَیُصِیبُ بِهَا مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَهُمۡ یُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِی ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡمِحَالِ ۝١٣

The thunder sounds His praises, and the angels, too, in awe of Him. He hurls His thunderbolts at whom He pleases. Yet they wrangle about God; and stern is His might

wayusabbiḥu l-raʿdu biḥamdihi wal-malāikatu min khīfatihi wayur'silu l-ṣawāʿiqa fayuṣību bihā man yashāu wahum yujādilūna fī l-lahi wahuwa shadīdu l-miḥāl

لَهُۥ دَعۡوَةُ ٱلۡحَقِّۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا یَسۡتَجِیبُونَ لَهُم بِشَیۡءٍ إِلَّا كَبَـٰسِطِ كَفَّیۡهِ إِلَى ٱلۡمَاۤءِ لِیَبۡلُغَ فَاهُ وَمَا هُوَ بِبَـٰلِغِهِۦۚ وَمَا دُعَاۤءُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ إِلَّا فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ ۝١٤

To Him is the prayer of Truth. The idols to which they pray give them no answer. They are like a man who stretches out his hands to the water and bids it rise to his mouth: it cannot reach it. Vain are the prayers of the unbelievers

lahu daʿwatu l-ḥaqi wa-alladhīna yadʿūna min dūnihi lā yastajībūna lahum bishayin illā kabāsiṭi kaffayhi ilā l-māi liyablugha fāhu wamā huwa bibālighihi wamā duʿāu l-kāfirīna illā fī ḍalāli

وَ̅لِ̅لَّ̅هِ̅ ̅یَ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ طَوۡعࣰا وَكَرۡهࣰا وَظِلَـٰلُهُم بِٱلۡغُدُوِّ وَٱلۡءَاصَالِ ۝١٥ ۩

All who dwell in the heavens and on the earth shall prostrate themselves before God: some willingly, some perforce; and their very shadows, morning and evening

walillahi yasjudu man fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi ṭawʿan wakarhan waẓilāluhum bil-ghuduwi wal-āṣāl

قُلۡ مَن رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ قُلِ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلۡ أَفَٱتَّخَذۡتُم مِّن دُونِهِۦۤ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ لَا یَمۡلِكُونَ لِأَنفُسِهِمۡ نَفۡعࣰا وَلَا ضَرࣰّاۚ قُلۡ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوِی ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ وَٱلۡبَصِیرُ أَمۡ هَلۡ تَسۡتَوِی ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتُ وَٱلنُّورُۗ أَمۡ جَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَاۤءَ خَلَقُوا۟ كَخَلۡقِهِۦ فَتَشَـٰبَهَ ٱلۡخَلۡقُ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ خَـٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَهُوَ ٱلۡوَ ٰحِدُ ٱلۡقَهَّـٰرُ ۝١٦

Say: ‘Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth?‘ Say: ‘God.‘ Say: ‘Why then have you chosen other gods besides Him, who, even to themselves, can do neither good nor harm?‘ Say: ‘Are the blind and the seeing equal? Is darkness equal to the light?‘ Or have their idols brought into being a creation like His, so that both creations appear to them alike? Say: ‘God is the Creator of all things. He is the One who conquers all.‘

qul man rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi quli l-lahu qul afa-ittakhadhtum min dūnihi awliyāa lā yamlikūna li-anfusihim nafʿan walā ḍarran qul hal yastawī l-aʿmā wal-baṣīru am hal tastawī l-ẓulumātu wal-nūru am jaʿalū lillahi shurakāa khalaqū kakhalqihi fatashābaha l-khalqu ʿalayhim quli l-lahu khāliqu kulli shayin wahuwa l-wāḥidu l-qahār

أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَسَالَتۡ أَوۡدِیَةُۢ بِقَدَرِهَا فَٱحۡتَمَلَ ٱلسَّیۡلُ زَبَدࣰا رَّابِیࣰاۖ وَمِمَّا یُوقِدُونَ عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلنَّارِ ٱبۡتِغَاۤءَ حِلۡیَةٍ أَوۡ مَتَـٰعࣲ زَبَدࣱ مِّثۡلُهُۥۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَٱلۡبَـٰطِلَۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلزَّبَدُ فَیَذۡهَبُ جُفَاۤءࣰۖ وَأَمَّا مَا یَنفَعُ ٱلنَّاسَ فَیَمۡكُثُ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡأَمۡثَالَ ۝١٧

He sends down water from the sky which fills the riverbeds to overflowing, so that the torrent bears a swelling foam, akin to that which rises from smelted ore when men make ornaments and tools. Thus God depicts Truth and falsehood. The scum is cast away, but that which is of use to man remains behind. Even thus God speaks in parables

anzala mina l-samāi māan fasālat awdiyatun biqadarihā fa-iḥ'tamala l-saylu zabadan rābiyan wamimmā yūqidūna ʿalayhi fī l-nāri ib'tighāa ḥil'yatin aw matāʿin zabadun mith'luhu kadhālika yaḍribu l-lahu l-ḥaqa wal-bāṭila fa-ammā l-zabadu fayadhhabu jufāan wa-ammā mā yanfaʿu l-nāsa fayamkuthu fī l-arḍi kadhālika yaḍribu l-lahu l-amthāl

لِلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَجَابُوا۟ لِرَبِّهِمُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ لَمۡ یَسۡتَجِیبُوا۟ لَهُۥ لَوۡ أَنَّ لَهُم مَّا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا وَمِثۡلَهُۥ مَعَهُۥ لَٱفۡتَدَوۡا۟ بِهِۦۤۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ سُوۤءُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمِهَادُ ۝١٨

Rich is the recompense of those that obey their Lord. But those that disobey Him ― if they possessed all that the earth contains, and as much besides, they would gladly offer it for their ransom. Theirs shall be a baleful reckoning. Hell shall be their home, an evil resting-place

lilladhīna is'tajābū lirabbihimu l-ḥus'nā wa-alladhīna lam yastajībū lahu law anna lahum mā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan wamith'lahu maʿahu la-if'tadaw bihi ulāika lahum sūu l-ḥisābi wamawāhum jahannamu wabi'sa l-mihād

3 Good and Evil bear Reward

۞ أَفَمَن یَعۡلَمُ أَنَّمَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ٱلۡحَقُّ كَمَنۡ هُوَ أَعۡمَىٰۤۚ إِنَّمَا یَتَذَكَّرُ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝١٩

Is then he who knows that the Truth has been revealed to you from your Lord like him who is blind? Truly, none will remember but those that are of good sense possessed

afaman yaʿlamu annamā unzila ilayka min rabbika l-ḥaqu kaman huwa aʿmā innamā yatadhakkaru ulū l-albāb

ٱلَّذِینَ یُوفُونَ بِعَهۡدِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا یَنقُضُونَ ٱلۡمِیثَـٰقَ ۝٢٠

those who keep faith with God and do not break their pledge

alladhīna yūfūna biʿahdi l-lahi walā yanquḍūna l-mīthāq

وَٱلَّذِینَ یَصِلُونَ مَاۤ أَمَرَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦۤ أَن یُوصَلَ وَیَخۡشَوۡنَ رَبَّهُمۡ وَیَخَافُونَ سُوۤءَ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ۝٢١

who join together what God has bidden to be united; who fear their Lord and dread a baleful reckoning

wa-alladhīna yaṣilūna mā amara l-lahu bihi an yūṣala wayakhshawna rabbahum wayakhāfūna sūa l-ḥisāb

وَٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ ٱبۡتِغَاۤءَ وَجۡهِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأَنفَقُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِرࣰّا وَعَلَانِیَةࣰ وَیَدۡرَءُونَ بِٱلۡحَسَنَةِ ٱلسَّیِّئَةَ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عُقۡبَى ٱلدَّارِ ۝٢٢

who for the sake of God endure with fortitude, attend to their prayers, and from what We gave them give in private and in public; and who ward off evil with good. These shall have the recompense of Paradise

wa-alladhīna ṣabarū ib'tighāa wajhi rabbihim wa-aqāmū l-ṣalata wa-anfaqū mimmā razaqnāhum sirran waʿalāniyatan wayadraūna bil-ḥasanati l-sayi-ata ulāika lahum ʿuq'bā l-dār

جَنَّـٰتُ عَدۡنࣲ یَدۡخُلُونَهَا وَمَن صَلَحَ مِنۡ ءَابَاۤىِٕهِمۡ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجِهِمۡ وَذُرِّیَّـٰتِهِمۡۖ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ یَدۡخُلُونَ عَلَیۡهِم مِّن كُلِّ بَابࣲ ۝٢٣

They shall enter the Gardens of Eden, together with the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants. From every gate the angels will come in to them, saying

jannātu ʿadnin yadkhulūnahā waman ṣalaḥa min ābāihim wa-azwājihim wadhurriyyātihim wal-malāikatu yadkhulūna ʿalayhim min kulli bābi

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكُم بِمَا صَبَرۡتُمۡۚ فَنِعۡمَ عُقۡبَى ٱلدَّارِ ۝٢٤

Peace be to you for all that you have steadfastly endured; blessed is the recompense of Paradise.‘

salāmun ʿalaykum bimā ṣabartum faniʿ'ma ʿuq'bā l-dār

وَٱلَّذِینَ یَنقُضُونَ عَهۡدَ ٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مِیثَـٰقِهِۦ وَیَقۡطَعُونَ مَاۤ أَمَرَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦۤ أَن یُوصَلَ وَیُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمُ ٱللَّعۡنَةُ وَلَهُمۡ سُوۤءُ ٱلدَّارِ ۝٢٥

As for those who break God‘s covenant after confirming it, who put asunder what God has bidden to be united and perpetrate corruption in the land, the curse shall light on them; the scourge of Hell awaits them

wa-alladhīna yanquḍūna ʿahda l-lahi min baʿdi mīthāqihi wayaqṭaʿūna mā amara l-lahu bihi an yūṣala wayuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi ulāika lahumu l-laʿnatu walahum sūu l-dār

ٱللَّهُ یَبۡسُطُ ٱلرِّزۡقَ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَقۡدِرُۚ وَفَرِحُوا۟ بِٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَمَا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ إِلَّا مَتَـٰعࣱ ۝٢٦

God gives abundantly to whom He will and sparingly likewise. They rejoice in the life of this world: yet the life of this world is but a brief diversion compared with the life to come

al-lahu yabsuṭu l-riz'qa liman yashāu wayaqdiru wafariḥū bil-ḥayati l-dun'yā wamā l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā fī l-ākhirati illā matāʿu

4 Revolution to be brought about by Qur'an

وَیَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۚ قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُضِلُّ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِیۤ إِلَیۡهِ مَنۡ أَنَابَ ۝٢٧

The unbelievers say: ‘Why has no sign been sent down to him by his Lord?‘ Say ‘God leaves in error whom he will, and guides to Himself those who repent

wayaqūlu alladhīna kafarū lawlā unzila ʿalayhi āyatun min rabbihi qul inna l-laha yuḍillu man yashāu wayahdī ilayhi man anāb

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَطۡمَىِٕنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِۗ أَلَا بِذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطۡمَىِٕنُّ ٱلۡقُلُوبُ ۝٢٨

and have faith; whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of God

alladhīna āmanū wataṭma-innu qulūbuhum bidhik'ri l-lahi alā bidhik'ri l-lahi taṭma-innu l-qulūb

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ طُوبَىٰ لَهُمۡ وَحُسۡنُ مَءَابࣲ ۝٢٩

Surely in the remembrance of God all hearts are comforted. Blessed are those who believe and do good works; blissful is their final abode

alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti ṭūbā lahum waḥus'nu maābi

كَذَ ٰلِكَ أَرۡسَلۡنَـٰكَ فِیۤ أُمَّةࣲ قَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِن قَبۡلِهَاۤ أُمَمࣱ لِّتَتۡلُوَا۟ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ وَهُمۡ یَكۡفُرُونَ بِٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِۚ قُلۡ هُوَ رَبِّی لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَلَیۡهِ تَوَكَّلۡتُ وَإِلَیۡهِ مَتَابِ ۝٣٠

Thus have We sent you forth to a community before whom other communities had passed away, that you may recite to them that with which We have inspired you. Yet they deny the Lord of Mercy. Say: ‘He is my Lord. There is no god but Him. In Him I have put my trust, and to Him I shall return.‘

kadhālika arsalnāka fī ummatin qad khalat min qablihā umamun litatluwā ʿalayhimu alladhī awḥaynā ilayka wahum yakfurūna bil-raḥmāni qul huwa rabbī lā ilāha illā huwa ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-ilayhi matāb

وَلَوۡ أَنَّ قُرۡءَانࣰا سُیِّرَتۡ بِهِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ أَوۡ قُطِّعَتۡ بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ أَوۡ كُلِّمَ بِهِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰۗ بَل لِّلَّهِ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ جَمِیعًاۗ أَفَلَمۡ یَا۟یۡءَسِ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ أَن لَّوۡ یَشَاۤءُ ٱللَّهُ لَهَدَى ٱلنَّاسَ جَمِیعࣰاۗ وَلَا یَزَالُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ تُصِیبُهُم بِمَا صَنَعُوا۟ قَارِعَةٌ أَوۡ تَحُلُّ قَرِیبࣰا مِّن دَارِهِمۡ حَتَّىٰ یَأۡتِیَ وَعۡدُ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُخۡلِفُ ٱلۡمِیعَادَ ۝٣١

And even if there be a Koran whereby the mountains could be set in motion, the earth rent asunder, and the dead communed with, surely all things are subject to God‘s will. Are the faithful unaware that, had God pleased, He could have guided all mankind? As for the unbelievers, because of their misdeeds disaster shall not cease to afflict them or to crouch at their very doorstep until God‘s promise be fulfilled. God will not fail the appointed time

walaw anna qur'ānan suyyirat bihi l-jibālu aw quṭṭiʿat bihi l-arḍu aw kullima bihi l-mawtā bal lillahi l-amru jamīʿan afalam yāy'asi alladhīna āmanū an law yashāu l-lahu lahadā l-nāsa jamīʿan walā yazālu alladhīna kafarū tuṣībuhum bimā ṣanaʿū qāriʿatun aw taḥullu qarīban min dārihim ḥattā yatiya waʿdu l-lahi inna l-laha lā yukh'lifu l-mīʿād

5 Opposition will fail

وَلَقَدِ ٱسۡتُهۡزِئَ بِرُسُلࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَأَمۡلَیۡتُ لِلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثُمَّ أَخَذۡتُهُمۡۖ فَكَیۡفَ كَانَ عِقَابِ ۝٣٢

Apostles were mocked before you: but, though I bore with the unbelievers, My scourge at length took them; and how terrible was My scourge

walaqadi us'tuh'zi-a birusulin min qablika fa-amlaytu lilladhīna kafarū thumma akhadhtuhum fakayfa kāna ʿiqāb

أَفَمَنۡ هُوَ قَاۤىِٕمٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡۗ وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَاۤءَ قُلۡ سَمُّوهُمۡۚ أَمۡ تُنَبِّءُونَهُۥ بِمَا لَا یَعۡلَمُ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَم بِظَـٰهِرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِۗ بَلۡ زُیِّنَ لِلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مَكۡرُهُمۡ وَصُدُّوا۟ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِۗ وَمَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنۡ هَادࣲ ۝٣٣

Who is it that watches every soul and all its actions? Yet they set up other deities besides God. Say: ‘Name them. Would you tell Him of that which is unknown to Him on the earth? Or are they merely empty words?‘ Indeed, their foul devices seem fair to the unbelievers, for they are debarred from the right path. They have no guide, those whom God has led astray

afaman huwa qāimun ʿalā kulli nafsin bimā kasabat wajaʿalū lillahi shurakāa qul sammūhum am tunabbiūnahu bimā lā yaʿlamu fī l-arḍi am biẓāhirin mina l-qawli bal zuyyina lilladhīna kafarū makruhum waṣuddū ʿani l-sabīli waman yuḍ'lili l-lahu famā lahu min hādi

لَّهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَشَقُّۖ وَمَا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقࣲ ۝٣٤

Torment awaits them in this nether life: but more grievous is the torment of the life to come. From God they will have no protector

lahum ʿadhābun fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā walaʿadhābu l-ākhirati ashaqqu wamā lahum mina l-lahi min wāqi

۞ مَّثَلُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِی وُعِدَ ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَۖ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُۖ أُكُلُهَا دَاۤىِٕمࣱ وَظِلُّهَاۚ تِلۡكَ عُقۡبَى ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ۚ وَّعُقۡبَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ٱلنَّارُ ۝٣٥

Such is the Paradise the righteous have been promised: it is watered by running brooks: eternal is its fruit, and eternal is its shade. Such shall be the end of the righteous; and the Fire shall be the fate of the unbelievers

mathalu l-janati allatī wuʿida l-mutaqūna tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru ukuluhā dāimun waẓilluhā til'ka ʿuq'bā alladhīna ittaqaw waʿuq'bā l-kāfirīna l-nār

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یَفۡرَحُونَ بِمَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكَۖ وَمِنَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ مَن یُنكِرُ بَعۡضَهُۥۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَاۤ أُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَعۡبُدَ ٱللَّهَ وَلَاۤ أُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦۤۚ إِلَیۡهِ أَدۡعُوا۟ وَإِلَیۡهِ مَءَابِ ۝٣٦

Those to whom We gave the Book rejoice in what is revealed to you, while some factions deny a part of it. Say: ‘I am only commanded to serve God and to associate none with Him. To Him I pray, and to Him I shall return.‘

wa-alladhīna ātaynāhumu l-kitāba yafraḥūna bimā unzila ilayka wamina l-aḥzābi man yunkiru baʿḍahu qul innamā umir'tu an aʿbuda l-laha walā ush'rika bihi ilayhi adʿū wa-ilayhi maāb

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ حُكۡمًا عَرَبِیࣰّاۚ وَلَىِٕنِ ٱتَّبَعۡتَ أَهۡوَاۤءَهُم بَعۡدَ مَا جَاۤءَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ مَا لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِیࣲّ وَلَا وَاقࣲ ۝٣٧

Thus have We revealed it, a code of judgements in the Arabic tongue. If you succumb to their desires after the knowledge you have been given, from God you shall have no guardian or protector

wakadhālika anzalnāhu ḥuk'man ʿarabiyyan wala-ini ittabaʿta ahwāahum baʿdamā jāaka mina l-ʿil'mi mā laka mina l-lahi min waliyyin walā wāqi

6 Steady Progress of Truth

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِكَ وَجَعَلۡنَا لَهُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا وَذُرِّیَّةࣰۚ وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن یَأۡتِیَ بِءَایَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۗ لِكُلِّ أَجَلࣲ كِتَابࣱ ۝٣٨

We sent forth apostles before you and gave them wives and descendants. Yet no apostle could work a miracle except by God‘s leave. Every age has a term decreed

walaqad arsalnā rusulan min qablika wajaʿalnā lahum azwājan wadhurriyyatan wamā kāna lirasūlin an yatiya biāyatin illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi likulli ajalin kitābu

یَمۡحُوا۟ ٱللَّهُ مَا یَشَاۤءُ وَیُثۡبِتُۖ وَعِندَهُۥۤ أُمُّ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ۝٣٩

God abrogates and confirms what He pleases. His is the Decree Eternal

yamḥū l-lahu mā yashāu wayuth'bitu waʿindahu ummu l-kitāb

وَإِن مَّا نُرِیَنَّكَ بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی نَعِدُهُمۡ أَوۡ نَتَوَفَّیَنَّكَ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ وَعَلَیۡنَا ٱلۡحِسَابُ ۝٤٠

Whether We let you glimpse in some measure the scourge We promise them, or claim you back to Us, your mission is only to give warning: it is for Us to do the reckoning

wa-in mā nuriyannaka baʿḍa alladhī naʿiduhum aw natawaffayannaka fa-innamā ʿalayka l-balāghu waʿalaynā l-ḥisāb

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّا نَأۡتِی ٱلۡأَرۡضَ نَنقُصُهَا مِنۡ أَطۡرَافِهَاۚ وَٱللَّهُ یَحۡكُمُ لَا مُعَقِّبَ لِحُكۡمِهِۦۚ وَهُوَ سَرِیعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ۝٤١

Do they not see how We invade their land and diminish its borders? If God decrees a thing, none can reverse it. And swift is His reckoning

awalam yaraw annā natī l-arḍa nanquṣuhā min aṭrāfihā wal-lahu yaḥkumu lā muʿaqqiba liḥuk'mihi wahuwa sarīʿu l-ḥisāb

وَقَدۡ مَكَرَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡمَكۡرُ جَمِیعࣰاۖ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تَكۡسِبُ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡكُفَّـٰرُ لِمَنۡ عُقۡبَى ٱلدَّارِ ۝٤٢

Those who have gone before them also schemed, but God is the master of all scheming: He knows what every soul has done. And the unbelievers will then learn for whom the blissful end is destined

waqad makara alladhīna min qablihim falillahi l-makru jamīʿan yaʿlamu mā taksibu kullu nafsin wasayaʿlamu l-kufāru liman ʿuq'bā l-dār

وَیَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَسۡتَ مُرۡسَلࣰاۚ قُلۡ كَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِیدَۢا بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكُمۡ وَمَنۡ عِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ۝٤٣

And the unbelievers say: ‘You are not sent.‘ Say: ‘Sufficient is God as my witness and your witness, and so are those who know the Book.‘

wayaqūlu alladhīna kafarū lasta mur'salan qul kafā bil-lahi shahīdan baynī wabaynakum waman ʿindahu ʿil'mu l-kitāb
