1 Rule of Interpretation

الۤمۤ ۝١

ٱللَّهُ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡحَیُّ ٱلۡقَیُّومُ ۝٢

Allah, there is no God but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal

al-lahu lā ilāha illā huwa l-ḥayu l-qayūm

نَزَّلَ عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ مُصَدِّقࣰا لِّمَا بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡهِ وَأَنزَلَ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةَ وَٱلۡإِنجِیلَ ۝٣

It is He who has sent down to you the Scripture with truth, confirming what was revealed before it, and has revealed the Torah and the Gospel before this for the guidance of mankind, and has revealed the Discrimination (Criterion)

nazzala ʿalayka l-kitāba bil-ḥaqi muṣaddiqan limā bayna yadayhi wa-anzala l-tawrāta wal-injīl

مِن قَبۡلُ هُدࣰى لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَنزَلَ ٱلۡفُرۡقَانَۗ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ شَدِیدࣱۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِیزࣱ ذُو ٱنتِقَامٍ ۝٤

Verily, those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah, for them is a severe penalty, for Allah is Mighty and Avenging

min qablu hudan lilnnāsi wa-anzala l-fur'qāna inna alladhīna kafarū biāyāti l-lahi lahum ʿadhābun shadīdun wal-lahu ʿazīzun dhū intiqāmi

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَخۡفَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ شَیۡءࣱ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ۝٥

Verily, from Allah, there is nothing hidden in the earth, nor in heaven

inna l-laha lā yakhfā ʿalayhi shayon fī l-arḍi walā fī l-samā

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُصَوِّرُكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِ كَیۡفَ یَشَاۤءُۚ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٦

He it is who fashions you in the womb as He pleases. There is no God but He, the Mighty, the Wise

huwa alladhī yuṣawwirukum fī l-arḥāmi kayfa yashāu lā ilāha illā huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلَ عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مِنۡهُ ءَایَـٰتࣱ مُّحۡكَمَـٰتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَأُخَرُ مُتَشَـٰبِهَـٰتࣱۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡ زَیۡغࣱ فَیَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَـٰبَهَ مِنۡهُ ٱبۡتِغَاۤءَ ٱلۡفِتۡنَةِ وَٱبۡتِغَاۤءَ تَأۡوِیلِهِۦۖ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ تَأۡوِیلَهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُۘ وَٱلرَّ ٰسِخُونَ فِی ٱلۡعِلۡمِ یَقُولُونَ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ كُلࣱّ مِّنۡ عِندِ رَبِّنَاۚ وَمَا یَذَّكَّرُ إِلَّاۤ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝٧

He it is who has revealed to you the Book, in which there are some verses that are Basic (decisive, or of established meaning) they are the mother (foundation) of the Book; and others are allegorical. But as for those in whose heart is perversity, they follow what is allegorical seeking discord, craving for (their own) interpretation of it; but none know the interpretation of it except Allah. And those who are well grounded in knowledge say, "We believe in it; it is all from our Lord"; but none will grasp the message save those who possess understanding. (Or: but none know the interpretation of it except Allah and those who are well grounded in knowledge. Say: "We believe in it, it is all from our Lord, but none will grasp the message save those who possess understanding.)

huwa alladhī anzala ʿalayka l-kitāba min'hu āyātun muḥ'kamātun hunna ummu l-kitābi wa-ukharu mutashābihātun fa-ammā alladhīna fī qulūbihim zayghun fayattabiʿūna mā tashābaha min'hu ib'tighāa l-fit'nati wa-ib'tighāa tawīlihi wamā yaʿlamu tawīlahu illā l-lahu wal-rāsikhūna fī l-ʿil'mi yaqūlūna āmannā bihi kullun min ʿindi rabbinā wamā yadhakkaru illā ulū l-albāb

رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغۡ قُلُوبَنَا بَعۡدَ إِذۡ هَدَیۡتَنَا وَهَبۡ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحۡمَةًۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡوَهَّابُ ۝٨

3:8 "O Lord! Pervert not our heart after Thou hast guided us, and grant us mercy from Thee, for Thou, only Thou art the Bestower (the Giver of Bounties)

rabbanā lā tuzigh qulūbanā baʿda idh hadaytanā wahab lanā min ladunka raḥmatan innaka anta l-wahāb

رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ ٱلنَّاسِ لِیَوۡمࣲ لَّا رَیۡبَ فِیهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُخۡلِفُ ٱلۡمِیعَادَ ۝٩

O Lord! It is Thou Who gathers together mankind unto the Day wherein is no doubt. Verily, Allah will not depart from His promise."

rabbanā innaka jāmiʿu l-nāsi liyawmin lā rayba fīhi inna l-laha lā yukh'lifu l-mīʿād

2 Unity — Basis of all Religions

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَن تُغۡنِیَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمۡ وَقُودُ ٱلنَّارِ ۝١٠

Verily, their wealth shall not help the faithless, nor their children, against Allah at all; they will be fuel for the fire

inna alladhīna kafarū lan tugh'niya ʿanhum amwāluhum walā awlāduhum mina l-lahi shayan wa-ulāika hum waqūdu l-nār

كَدَأۡبِ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝١١

As was the case with Pharaoh´s people and their predecessors: they said Our signs were lies, and Allah seized them for their sins, for Allah is severe in punishment

kadabi āli fir'ʿawna wa-alladhīna min qablihim kadhabū biāyātinā fa-akhadhahumu l-lahu bidhunūbihim wal-lahu shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

قُل لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ سَتُغۡلَبُونَ وَتُحۡشَرُونَ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمِهَادُ ۝١٢

Say to those who disbelieve, "Soon you shall be overcome and driven together to Hell, an evil bed will it be

qul lilladhīna kafarū satugh'labūna watuḥ'sharūna ilā jahannama wabi'sa l-mihād

قَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ ءَایَةࣱ فِی فِئَتَیۡنِ ٱلۡتَقَتَاۖ فِئَةࣱ تُقَـٰتِلُ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَأُخۡرَىٰ كَافِرَةࣱ یَرَوۡنَهُم مِّثۡلَیۡهِمۡ رَأۡیَ ٱلۡعَیۡنِۚ وَٱللَّهُ یُؤَیِّدُ بِنَصۡرِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةࣰ لِّأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرِ ۝١٣

"You already have had a sign in the two parties who met (at the battle of Badr); one party fighting in the way of Allah, the other disbelieving; these saw, with their very eyes, twice the number as themselves. Thus Allah strengthens with His help th

qad kāna lakum āyatun fī fi-atayni l-taqatā fi-atun tuqātilu fī sabīli l-lahi wa-ukh'rā kāfiratun yarawnahum mith'layhim raya l-ʿayni wal-lahu yu-ayyidu binaṣrihi man yashāu inna fī dhālika laʿib'ratan li-ulī l-abṣār

زُیِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ حُبُّ ٱلشَّهَوَ ٰتِ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ وَٱلۡبَنِینَ وَٱلۡقَنَـٰطِیرِ ٱلۡمُقَنطَرَةِ مِنَ ٱلذَّهَبِ وَٱلۡفِضَّةِ وَٱلۡخَیۡلِ ٱلۡمُسَوَّمَةِ وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ وَٱلۡحَرۡثِۗ ذَ ٰلِكَ مَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَٱللَّهُ عِندَهُۥ حُسۡنُ ٱلۡمَءَابِ ۝١٤

Beautiful unto men is the life of lust for women, and children, and heaps of hoarded gold and silver, and of horses well bred, and cattle, and well tilled land; these are the comforts for the life of this world; but Allah, with Him is the more excellent

zuyyina lilnnāsi ḥubbu l-shahawāti mina l-nisāi wal-banīna wal-qanāṭīri l-muqanṭarati mina l-dhahabi wal-fiḍati wal-khayli l-musawamati wal-anʿāmi wal-ḥarthi dhālika matāʿu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wal-lahu ʿindahu ḥus'nu l-maāb

۞ قُلۡ أَؤُنَبِّئُكُم بِخَیۡرࣲ مِّن ذَ ٰلِكُمۡۖ لِلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣱ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا وَأَزۡوَ ٰجࣱ مُّطَهَّرَةࣱ وَرِضۡوَ ٰنࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِیرُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ ۝١٥

Say, "But shall we tell you of a better thing than this?" For the righteous are Gardens with their Lord, beneath which rivers flow; they shall dwell therein for ever, and pure companions and grace from Allah; for all His servants are in Allah&a;

qul a-unabbi-ukum bikhayrin min dhālikum lilladhīna ittaqaw ʿinda rabbihim jannātun tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wa-azwājun muṭahharatun wariḍ'wānun mina l-lahi wal-lahu baṣīrun bil-ʿibād

ٱلَّذِینَ یَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّنَاۤ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ ۝١٦

Those who say, "Lord, we do, indeed, believe. Forgive you our sins and keep us from the torment of the fire,"

alladhīna yaqūlūna rabbanā innanā āmannā fa-igh'fir lanā dhunūbanā waqinā ʿadhāba l-nār

ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ وَٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ وَٱلۡقَـٰنِتِینَ وَٱلۡمُنفِقِینَ وَٱلۡمُسۡتَغۡفِرِینَ بِٱلۡأَسۡحَارِ ۝١٧

Those who show patient, firmness and self-control, the truthful in word and deed, the devout in worship, and those who spend, and pray for forgiveness at dawn

al-ṣābirīna wal-ṣādiqīna wal-qānitīna wal-munfiqīna wal-mus'taghfirīna bil-asḥār

شَهِدَ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّهُۥ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ وَأُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ قَاۤىِٕمَۢا بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۚ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝١٨

Allah, Himself, bears witness that there is no God but He, and so do the angels, and those possessed of knowledge, maintaining His creation in justice. There is no God but He, the Mighty, the Wise

shahida l-lahu annahu lā ilāha illā huwa wal-malāikatu wa-ulū l-ʿil'mi qāiman bil-qis'ṭi lā ilāha illā huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

إِنَّ ٱلدِّینَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمُۗ وَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُ بَغۡیَۢا بَیۡنَهُمۡۗ وَمَن یَكۡفُرۡ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِیعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ۝١٩

Verily, (the true) religion in Allah´s sight is The Surrender (to His will, i.e. Islam), and those to whom the Book was given formerly disagreed not until after knowledge came to them, through mutual envy. But whoever disbelieves in Allah´s r

inna l-dīna ʿinda l-lahi l-is'lāmu wamā ikh'talafa alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba illā min baʿdi mā jāahumu l-ʿil'mu baghyan baynahum waman yakfur biāyāti l-lahi fa-inna l-laha sarīʿu l-ḥisāb

فَإِنۡ حَاۤجُّوكَ فَقُلۡ أَسۡلَمۡتُ وَجۡهِیَ لِلَّهِ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِۗ وَقُل لِّلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡأُمِّیِّـۧنَ ءَأَسۡلَمۡتُمۡۚ فَإِنۡ أَسۡلَمُوا۟ فَقَدِ ٱهۡتَدَوا۟ۖ وَّإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِیرُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ ۝٢٠

And if they dispute with you, then say, "I have surrendered my whole self unto Allah, and so have those who follows me." And say to those who have been given the Book, and unto the unlearned (or unread or Gentiles), "Have ye, too, surrende

fa-in ḥājjūka faqul aslamtu wajhiya lillahi wamani ittabaʿani waqul lilladhīna ūtū l-kitāba wal-umiyīna a-aslamtum fa-in aslamū faqadi ih'tadaw wa-in tawallaw fa-innamā ʿalayka l-balāghu wal-lahu baṣīrun bil-ʿibād

3 Kingdom granted to another People

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَكۡفُرُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَقۡتُلُونَ ٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ بِغَیۡرِ حَقࣲّ وَیَقۡتُلُونَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ فَبَشِّرۡهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمٍ ۝٢١

Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah´s revelations, and kill the prophets wrongfully, and kill those from among mankind who bid what is just, promise them a grievous woe

inna alladhīna yakfurūna biāyāti l-lahi wayaqtulūna l-nabiyīna bighayri ḥaqqin wayaqtulūna alladhīna yamurūna bil-qis'ṭi mina l-nāsi fabashir'hum biʿadhābin alīmi

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ حَبِطَتۡ أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٢٢

These are they whose works are void in this world and the Hereafter, and they have no helpers

ulāika alladhīna ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum fī l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wamā lahum min nāṣirīn

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ نَصِیبࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ یُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَىٰ كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ لِیَحۡكُمَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ یَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِیقࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ وَهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٢٣

Did you not see those who have been given a portion of the Book? They called on the Book of Allah to decide disputes between them; and then a sect of them turned their backs and opposes it

alam tara ilā alladhīna ūtū naṣīban mina l-kitābi yud'ʿawna ilā kitābi l-lahi liyaḥkuma baynahum thumma yatawallā farīqun min'hum wahum muʿ'riḍūn

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَالُوا۟ لَن تَمَسَّنَا ٱلنَّارُ إِلَّاۤ أَیَّامࣰا مَّعۡدُودَ ٰتࣲۖ وَغَرَّهُمۡ فِی دِینِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٢٤

That is because they say, "The fire shall not touch us save for a certain number of days." But that which they had invented in their religion deceived them

dhālika bi-annahum qālū lan tamassanā l-nāru illā ayyāman maʿdūdātin wagharrahum fī dīnihim mā kānū yaftarūn

فَكَیۡفَ إِذَا جَمَعۡنَـٰهُمۡ لِیَوۡمࣲ لَّا رَیۡبَ فِیهِ وَوُفِّیَتۡ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّا كَسَبَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٥

How will it be when we have gathered them together on a Day whereof there is no doubt, when each soul shall be paid what it has earned in full, and they shall not be wronged

fakayfa idhā jamaʿnāhum liyawmin lā rayba fīhi wawuffiyat kullu nafsin mā kasabat wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

قُلِ ٱللَّهُمَّ مَـٰلِكَ ٱلۡمُلۡكِ تُؤۡتِی ٱلۡمُلۡكَ مَن تَشَاۤءُ وَتَنزِعُ ٱلۡمُلۡكَ مِمَّن تَشَاۤءُ وَتُعِزُّ مَن تَشَاۤءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشَاۤءُۖ بِیَدِكَ ٱلۡخَیۡرُۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٢٦

Say, "O Allah, Lord of the Kingdom! Thou givestst the kingdom (or power and authority) to whomsoever Thou pleases, and withdraws the kingdom (or power and authority) from whomsoever Thou pleases; Thou honours whom Thou pleases, and abases whom Thou

quli l-lahuma mālika l-mul'ki tu'tī l-mul'ka man tashāu watanziʿu l-mul'ka mimman tashāu watuʿizzu man tashāu watudhillu man tashāu biyadika l-khayru innaka ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

تُولِجُ ٱلَّیۡلَ فِی ٱلنَّهَارِ وَتُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِی ٱلَّیۡلِۖ وَتُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡحَیَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَیِّتِ وَتُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡمَیِّتَ مِنَ ٱلۡحَیِّۖ وَتَرۡزُقُ مَن تَشَاۤءُ بِغَیۡرِ حِسَابࣲ ۝٢٧

Thou dost turn night to day, and do turn day to night, and do bring forth the living from the dead, and Thou brings forth the dead from the living. Thou dost give sustenance for whom Thou chooses without stint."

tūliju al-layla fī l-nahāri watūliju l-nahāra fī al-layli watukh'riju l-ḥaya mina l-mayiti watukh'riju l-mayita mina l-ḥayi watarzuqu man tashāu bighayri ḥisābi

لَّا یَتَّخِذِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ مِن دُونِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۖ وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَلَیۡسَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ فِی شَیۡءٍ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَتَّقُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ تُقَىٰةࣰۗ وَیُحَذِّرُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسَهُۥۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝٢٨

Let not those who believe take disbelievers for their friends rather than believers. He who does this has no part with Allah at all, unless, indeed, you guard yourselves against them. But Allah bids you beware of only Himself, for unto Allah is your jour

lā yattakhidhi l-mu'minūna l-kāfirīna awliyāa min dūni l-mu'minīna waman yafʿal dhālika falaysa mina l-lahi fī shayin illā an tattaqū min'hum tuqātan wayuḥadhirukumu l-lahu nafsahu wa-ilā l-lahi l-maṣīr

قُلۡ إِن تُخۡفُوا۟ مَا فِی صُدُورِكُمۡ أَوۡ تُبۡدُوهُ یَعۡلَمۡهُ ٱللَّهُۗ وَیَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٢٩

Say, "If you hide that which is in your breasts, or if you show it, Allah knows it: He knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, for Allah is Able to do all things."

qul in tukh'fū mā fī ṣudūrikum aw tub'dūhu yaʿlamhu l-lahu wayaʿlamu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

یَوۡمَ تَجِدُ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّا عَمِلَتۡ مِنۡ خَیۡرࣲ مُّحۡضَرࣰا وَمَا عَمِلَتۡ مِن سُوۤءࣲ تَوَدُّ لَوۡ أَنَّ بَیۡنَهَا وَبَیۡنَهُۥۤ أَمَدَۢا بَعِیدࣰاۗ وَیُحَذِّرُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسَهُۥۗ وَٱللَّهُ رَءُوفُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ ۝٣٠

On the day when every soul shall find itself presented with what it has done of good and what it has done of evil, then it will long that there were between itself and that evil a wide distance. Allah bids you beware of Himself, but Allah is gentle with

yawma tajidu kullu nafsin mā ʿamilat min khayrin muḥ'ḍaran wamā ʿamilat min sūin tawaddu law anna baynahā wabaynahu amadan baʿīdan wayuḥadhirukumu l-lahu nafsahu wal-lahu raūfun bil-ʿibād

4 Last Members of a Chosen Race

قُلۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تُحِبُّونَ ٱللَّهَ فَٱتَّبِعُونِی یُحۡبِبۡكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَیَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ ذُنُوبَكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٣١

Say, "If you love Allah then follow me, and Allah will love you and forgive you your sins, for Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

qul in kuntum tuḥibbūna l-laha fa-ittabiʿūnī yuḥ'bib'kumu l-lahu wayaghfir lakum dhunūbakum wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmu

قُلۡ أَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَۖ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٣٢

Say, "Obey Allah and the Messenger"; but if they turn away Allah loves not disbelievers."

qul aṭīʿū l-laha wal-rasūla fa-in tawallaw fa-inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu l-kāfirīn

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰۤ ءَادَمَ وَنُوحࣰا وَءَالَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَءَالَ عِمۡرَ ٰنَ عَلَى ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٣٣

Verily, Allah has preferred Adam, and Noah, and Abraham´s family, and Imran´s family above all people

inna l-laha iṣ'ṭafā ādama wanūḥan waāla ib'rāhīma waāla ʿim'rāna ʿalā l-ʿālamīn

ذُرِّیَّةَۢ بَعۡضُهَا مِنۢ بَعۡضࣲۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ ۝٣٤

Offsprings one of the other. Allah Hears and Knows all things

dhurriyyatan baʿḍuhā min baʿḍin wal-lahu samīʿun ʿalīmu

إِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتُ عِمۡرَ ٰنَ رَبِّ إِنِّی نَذَرۡتُ لَكَ مَا فِی بَطۡنِی مُحَرَّرࣰا فَتَقَبَّلۡ مِنِّیۤۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٣٥

When Imran´s wife said, "Lord! I have vowed to dedicate unto Thee what is within my womb. Accept it then from me. Verily, you are Hearer and Knower."

idh qālati im'ra-atu ʿim'rāna rabbi innī nadhartu laka mā fī baṭnī muḥarraran fataqabbal minnī innaka anta l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

فَلَمَّا وَضَعَتۡهَا قَالَتۡ رَبِّ إِنِّی وَضَعۡتُهَاۤ أُنثَىٰ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا وَضَعَتۡ وَلَیۡسَ ٱلذَّكَرُ كَٱلۡأُنثَىٰۖ وَإِنِّی سَمَّیۡتُهَا مَرۡیَمَ وَإِنِّیۤ أُعِیذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّیَّتَهَا مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِیمِ ۝٣٦

And when she brought it forth she said, "Verily, I have brought forth a female" - Allah knew best what she brought forth; and a male is not like a female - "I have called her Mary, and I seek a refuge in Thee for her and for her seed from

falammā waḍaʿathā qālat rabbi innī waḍaʿtuhā unthā wal-lahu aʿlamu bimā waḍaʿat walaysa l-dhakaru kal-unthā wa-innī sammaytuhā maryama wa-innī uʿīdhuhā bika wadhurriyyatahā mina l-shayṭāni l-rajīm

فَتَقَبَّلَهَا رَبُّهَا بِقَبُولٍ حَسَنࣲ وَأَنۢبَتَهَا نَبَاتًا حَسَنࣰا وَكَفَّلَهَا زَكَرِیَّاۖ كُلَّمَا دَخَلَ عَلَیۡهَا زَكَرِیَّا ٱلۡمِحۡرَابَ وَجَدَ عِندَهَا رِزۡقࣰاۖ قَالَ یَـٰمَرۡیَمُ أَنَّىٰ لَكِ هَـٰذَاۖ قَالَتۡ هُوَ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَرۡزُقُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ بِغَیۡرِ حِسَابٍ ۝٣٧

And her Lord accepted fully, and gave her a goodly growth, and assigned her to Zachariah´s care. Whenever Zachariah entered her chamber he found beside her a provision, and he said, "O Mary, whence comes this to you?" She answered, "

fataqabbalahā rabbuhā biqabūlin ḥasanin wa-anbatahā nabātan ḥasanan wakaffalahā zakariyyā kullamā dakhala ʿalayhā zakariyyā l-miḥ'rāba wajada ʿindahā riz'qan qāla yāmaryamu annā laki hādhā qālat huwa min ʿindi l-lahi inna l-laha yarzuqu man yashāu bighayri ḥisābi

هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِیَّا رَبَّهُۥۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّیَّةࣰ طَیِّبَةًۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِیعُ ٱلدُّعَاۤءِ ۝٣٨

Therefore prayed Zachariah to his Lord, and said, "Lord, grant me from Thee good seed. Verily, Thou hears prayer."

hunālika daʿā zakariyyā rabbahu qāla rabbi hab lī min ladunka dhurriyyatan ṭayyibatan innaka samīʿu l-duʿā

فَنَادَتۡهُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ وَهُوَ قَاۤىِٕمࣱ یُصَلِّی فِی ٱلۡمِحۡرَابِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُبَشِّرُكَ بِیَحۡیَىٰ مُصَدِّقَۢا بِكَلِمَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَسَیِّدࣰا وَحَصُورࣰا وَنَبِیࣰّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٣٩

And an angel called out to him as he was standing praying in the chamber (and said) "Allah gives you the glad tidings of John, to confirm the Word from Allah, a noble and a chaste one, and a prophet of the righteous."

fanādathu l-malāikatu wahuwa qāimun yuṣallī fī l-miḥ'rābi anna l-laha yubashiruka biyaḥyā muṣaddiqan bikalimatin mina l-lahi wasayyidan waḥaṣūran wanabiyyan mina l-ṣāliḥīn

قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ یَكُونُ لِی غُلَـٰمࣱ وَقَدۡ بَلَغَنِیَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ وَٱمۡرَأَتِی عَاقِرࣱۖ قَالَ كَذَ ٰلِكَ ٱللَّهُ یَفۡعَلُ مَا یَشَاۤءُ ۝٤٠

He said, "My Lord, how can there be to me a boy when old age has reached me, and my wife is barren?" The angel answered, "Thus Allah does what He pleases."

qāla rabbi annā yakūnu lī ghulāmun waqad balaghaniya l-kibaru wa-im'ra-atī ʿāqirun qāla kadhālika l-lahu yafʿalu mā yashā

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَل لِّیۤ ءَایَةࣰۖ قَالَ ءَایَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَـٰثَةَ أَیَّامٍ إِلَّا رَمۡزࣰاۗ وَٱذۡكُر رَّبَّكَ كَثِیرࣰا وَسَبِّحۡ بِٱلۡعَشِیِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡكَـٰرِ ۝٤١

He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." The angel said, "The sign unto you is that you shall not speak to men for three days, save by gesture; but remember your Lord much, and celebrate His praises in the evening and the morning."

qāla rabbi ij'ʿal lī āyatan qāla āyatuka allā tukallima l-nāsa thalāthata ayyāmin illā ramzan wa-udh'kur rabbaka kathīran wasabbiḥ bil-ʿashiyi wal-ib'kār

5 Birth and Ministry of Jesus

وَإِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ یَـٰمَرۡیَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَاۤءِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٢

And when the angels said, "O Mary! Verily, Allah has chosen you, and has purified you, and has chosen you above the women of the world

wa-idh qālati l-malāikatu yāmaryamu inna l-laha iṣ'ṭafāki waṭahharaki wa-iṣ'ṭafāki ʿalā nisāi l-ʿālamīn

یَـٰمَرۡیَمُ ٱقۡنُتِی لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسۡجُدِی وَٱرۡكَعِی مَعَ ٱلرَّ ٰكِعِینَ ۝٤٣

O Mary! Be obedient unto your Lord, and adore and bow down with those who bow."

yāmaryamu uq'nutī lirabbiki wa-us'judī wa-ir'kaʿī maʿa l-rākiʿīn

ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤءِ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ نُوحِیهِ إِلَیۡكَۚ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَیۡهِمۡ إِذۡ یُلۡقُونَ أَقۡلَـٰمَهُمۡ أَیُّهُمۡ یَكۡفُلُ مَرۡیَمَ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَیۡهِمۡ إِذۡ یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٤٤

This is (one) of the declarations of the unseen world which we reveal to you (Muhammad), though you were not by them when they threw their lots as to which of them should take care of Mary, nor were you by them when they did dispute

dhālika min anbāi l-ghaybi nūḥīhi ilayka wamā kunta ladayhim idh yul'qūna aqlāmahum ayyuhum yakfulu maryama wamā kunta ladayhim idh yakhtaṣimūn

إِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ یَـٰمَرۡیَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةࣲ مِّنۡهُ ٱسۡمُهُ ٱلۡمَسِیحُ عِیسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَ وَجِیهࣰا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٥

When the angel said, "O Mary! Verily, Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word from Him; his name shall be the Messiah Jesus, the son of Mary, honoured in this world and the Hereafter and of those whose place is nigh to Allah

idh qālati l-malāikatu yāmaryamu inna l-laha yubashiruki bikalimatin min'hu us'muhu l-masīḥu ʿīsā ub'nu maryama wajīhan fī l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wamina l-muqarabīn

وَیُكَلِّمُ ٱلنَّاسَ فِی ٱلۡمَهۡدِ وَكَهۡلࣰا وَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٤٦

And he shall speak to people in his cradle and in his manhood, and shall be among the righteous."

wayukallimu l-nāsa fī l-mahdi wakahlan wamina l-ṣāliḥīn

قَالَتۡ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ یَكُونُ لِی وَلَدࣱ وَلَمۡ یَمۡسَسۡنِی بَشَرࣱۖ قَالَ كَذَ ٰلِكِ ٱللَّهُ یَخۡلُقُ مَا یَشَاۤءُۚ إِذَا قَضَىٰۤ أَمۡرࣰا فَإِنَّمَا یَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَیَكُونُ ۝٤٧

She said, "Lord! How can I have a son, when man has not yet touched me?" He said, "Thus Allah creates what He pleases. When He decrees a matter He only says: BE! And it is

qālat rabbi annā yakūnu lī waladun walam yamsasnī basharun qāla kadhāliki l-lahu yakhluqu mā yashāu idhā qaḍā amran fa-innamā yaqūlu lahu kun fayakūn

وَیُعَلِّمُهُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةَ وَٱلۡإِنجِیلَ ۝٤٨

And He will teach him the Scripture and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel

wayuʿallimuhu l-kitāba wal-ḥik'mata wal-tawrāta wal-injīl

وَرَسُولًا إِلَىٰ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ أَنِّی قَدۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِءَایَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ أَنِّیۤ أَخۡلُقُ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطِّینِ كَهَیۡءَةِ ٱلطَّیۡرِ فَأَنفُخُ فِیهِ فَیَكُونُ طَیۡرَۢا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَأُبۡرِئُ ٱلۡأَكۡمَهَ وَٱلۡأَبۡرَصَ وَأُحۡیِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا تَأۡكُلُونَ وَمَا تَدَّخِرُونَ فِی بُیُوتِكُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٤٩

And he shall be a Messenger to the people of Israel (saying), "Verily, I have come to you, with a sign from Allah, namely, that I will create for you out of clay a form of a bird, and I will blow thereon and it shall become a bird by Allah´s p

warasūlan ilā banī is'rāīla annī qad ji'tukum biāyatin min rabbikum annī akhluqu lakum mina l-ṭīni kahayati l-ṭayri fa-anfukhu fīhi fayakūnu ṭayran bi-idh'ni l-lahi wa-ub'ri-u l-akmaha wal-abraṣa wa-uḥ'yī l-mawtā bi-idh'ni l-lahi wa-unabbi-ukum bimā takulūna wamā taddakhirūna fī buyūtikum inna fī dhālika laāyatan lakum in kuntum mu'minīn

وَمُصَدِّقࣰا لِّمَا بَیۡنَ یَدَیَّ مِنَ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةِ وَلِأُحِلَّ لَكُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی حُرِّمَ عَلَیۡكُمۡۚ وَجِئۡتُكُم بِءَایَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝٥٠

And I come confirming what was before you of the Torah, and to make lawful for you some of that which was forbidden unto you. I come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear Allah and follow me

wamuṣaddiqan limā bayna yadayya mina l-tawrāti wali-uḥilla lakum baʿḍa alladhī ḥurrima ʿalaykum waji'tukum biāyatin min rabbikum fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَبِّی وَرَبُّكُمۡ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣱ ۝٥١

Allah is my Lord, and your Lord, so worship Him: - this is the straight path."

inna l-laha rabbī warabbukum fa-uʿ'budūhu hādhā ṣirāṭun mus'taqīmu

۞ فَلَمَّاۤ أَحَسَّ عِیسَىٰ مِنۡهُمُ ٱلۡكُفۡرَ قَالَ مَنۡ أَنصَارِیۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۖ قَالَ ٱلۡحَوَارِیُّونَ نَحۡنُ أَنصَارُ ٱللَّهِ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَٱشۡهَدۡ بِأَنَّا مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٥٢

And when Jesus perceived their unbelief, He said, "Who will be my helpers in the cause of Allah?" The disciples said, "We will be Allah´s helpers. We believe in Allah, so bear you witness that we have surrendered (unto Him)

falammā aḥassa ʿīsā min'humu l-kuf'ra qāla man anṣārī ilā l-lahi qāla l-ḥawāriyūna naḥnu anṣāru l-lahi āmannā bil-lahi wa-ish'had bi-annā mus'limūn

رَبَّنَاۤ ءَامَنَّا بِمَاۤ أَنزَلۡتَ وَٱتَّبَعۡنَا ٱلرَّسُولَ فَٱكۡتُبۡنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِینَ ۝٥٣

Lord, we believe in what Thou hast revealed, and we follow him whom Thou hast sent, so write us down with those who bear witness."

rabbanā āmannā bimā anzalta wa-ittabaʿnā l-rasūla fa-uk'tub'nā maʿa l-shāhidīn

وَمَكَرُوا۟ وَمَكَرَ ٱللَّهُۖ وَٱللَّهُ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡمَـٰكِرِینَ ۝٥٤

But they (the Jews or unbelievers) schemed, and Allah schemed, for Allah is the best of schemers

wamakarū wamakara l-lahu wal-lahu khayru l-mākirīn

6 Jesus Cleared of False Charges

إِذۡ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ یَـٰعِیسَىٰۤ إِنِّی مُتَوَفِّیكَ وَرَافِعُكَ إِلَیَّ وَمُطَهِّرُكَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَجَاعِلُ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّبَعُوكَ فَوۡقَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۖ ثُمَّ إِلَیَّ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَأَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَكُمۡ فِیمَا كُنتُمۡ فِیهِ تَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝٥٥

Behold! Allah said, "O Jesus! I will take you and raise you up to Myself, and will cleanse you (of the falsehoods) of those who disbelieve, and will set those who follow you above the faithless until the Day of Resurrection. Then unto Me is your ret

idh qāla l-lahu yāʿīsā innī mutawaffīka warāfiʿuka ilayya wamuṭahhiruka mina alladhīna kafarū wajāʿilu alladhīna ittabaʿūka fawqa alladhīna kafarū ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati thumma ilayya marjiʿukum fa-aḥkumu baynakum fīmā kuntum fīhi takhtalifūn

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَأُعَذِّبُهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدࣰا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٥٦

And as for those who disbelieve, I will punish them with grievous punishment in this world and the next, and they shall have none to help them."

fa-ammā alladhīna kafarū fa-uʿadhibuhum ʿadhāban shadīdan fī l-dun'yā wal-ākhirati wamā lahum min nāṣirīn

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَیُوَفِّیهِمۡ أُجُورَهُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٥٧

But as for those who believe and do good works, He will pay them their wages in full, for Allah loves not the wrongdoers (or unjust)

wa-ammā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti fayuwaffīhim ujūrahum wal-lahu lā yuḥibbu l-ẓālimīn

ذَ ٰلِكَ نَتۡلُوهُ عَلَیۡكَ مِنَ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ وَٱلذِّكۡرِ ٱلۡحَكِیمِ ۝٥٨

This which We recite unto you is of the Signs (revelations) and of the Wise Reminder (the Message of Wisdom, the Quran)

dhālika natlūhu ʿalayka mina l-āyāti wal-dhik'ri l-ḥakīm

إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِیسَىٰ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ ءَادَمَۖ خَلَقَهُۥ مِن تُرَابࣲ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُۥ كُن فَیَكُونُ ۝٥٩

Verily the likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him from earth, then He said to him: BE! And he was

inna mathala ʿīsā ʿinda l-lahi kamathali ādama khalaqahu min turābin thumma qāla lahu kun fayakūn

ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡمُمۡتَرِینَ ۝٦٠

This is the truth from your Lord, so be you not of those who are in doubt

al-ḥaqu min rabbika falā takun mina l-mum'tarīn

فَمَنۡ حَاۤجَّكَ فِیهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَاۤءَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ فَقُلۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ نَدۡعُ أَبۡنَاۤءَنَا وَأَبۡنَاۤءَكُمۡ وَنِسَاۤءَنَا وَنِسَاۤءَكُمۡ وَأَنفُسَنَا وَأَنفُسَكُمۡ ثُمَّ نَبۡتَهِلۡ فَنَجۡعَل لَّعۡنَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٦١

And whoever disputes with you after what has come to you of knowledge, say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves: then we will earnestly pray and invoke Allah´s curse on those wh

faman ḥājjaka fīhi min baʿdi mā jāaka mina l-ʿil'mi faqul taʿālaw nadʿu abnāanā wa-abnāakum wanisāanā wanisāakum wa-anfusanā wa-anfusakum thumma nabtahil fanajʿal laʿnata l-lahi ʿalā l-kādhibīn

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡقَصَصُ ٱلۡحَقُّۚ وَمَا مِنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٦٢

Verily, those are the true stories, and there is no God but Allah, and, verily, Allah He is the Mighty, the Wise

inna hādhā lahuwa l-qaṣaṣu l-ḥaqu wamā min ilāhin illā l-lahu wa-inna l-laha lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

7 Controversy with Jews and Christians

فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٦٣

But if they turn away, Allah is Aware of the evildoers (corrupters, mischief-makers)

fa-in tawallaw fa-inna l-laha ʿalīmun bil-muf'sidīn

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ تَعَالَوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ كَلِمَةࣲ سَوَاۤءِۭ بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَكُمۡ أَلَّا نَعۡبُدَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَلَا نُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُنَا بَعۡضًا أَرۡبَابࣰا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَقُولُوا۟ ٱشۡهَدُوا۟ بِأَنَّا مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٦٤

Say, "O you people of the Book, come to an agreement between us and you, that we will not serve other than Allah, nor associate aught with him, nor take others for Lords rather than Allah." But if they turn away then say, "Bear witness tha

qul yāahla l-kitābi taʿālaw ilā kalimatin sawāin baynanā wabaynakum allā naʿbuda illā l-laha walā nush'rika bihi shayan walā yattakhidha baʿḍunā baʿḍan arbāban min dūni l-lahi fa-in tawallaw faqūlū ish'hadū bi-annā mus'limūn

یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لِمَ تُحَاۤجُّونَ فِیۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَتِ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةُ وَٱلۡإِنجِیلُ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٥

O people of the Book, why do you dispute about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? What! Do you not understand

yāahla l-kitābi lima tuḥājjūna fī ib'rāhīma wamā unzilati l-tawrātu wal-injīlu illā min baʿdihi afalā taʿqilūn

هَـٰۤأَنتُمۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ حَـٰجَجۡتُمۡ فِیمَا لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱ فَلِمَ تُحَاۤجُّونَ فِیمَا لَیۡسَ لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱۚ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ وَأَنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٦

Here you are, disputing about what you have some knowledge of; why then do you dispute about what you have no knowledge? Allah knows and you know not

hāantum hāulāi ḥājajtum fīmā lakum bihi ʿil'mun falima tuḥājjūna fīmā laysa lakum bihi ʿil'mun wal-lahu yaʿlamu wa-antum lā taʿlamūn

مَا كَانَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ یَهُودِیࣰّا وَلَا نَصۡرَانِیࣰّا وَلَـٰكِن كَانَ حَنِیفࣰا مُّسۡلِمࣰا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٦٧

Abraham was not a Jew, nor yet a Christian, but he was a "Hanif" (an upright man) who had surrendered, and not of the idolaters

mā kāna ib'rāhīmu yahūdiyyan walā naṣrāniyyan walākin kāna ḥanīfan mus'liman wamā kāna mina l-mush'rikīn

إِنَّ أَوۡلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ لَلَّذِینَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ وَهَـٰذَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ۗ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِیُّ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٨

Verily, the people who have most claim to (or are nearest of kin to) Abraham are those who follow him, and this prophet, and those who believe: - Allah is the patron of the believers

inna awlā l-nāsi bi-ib'rāhīma lalladhīna ittabaʿūhu wahādhā l-nabiyu wa-alladhīna āmanū wal-lahu waliyyu l-mu'minīn

وَدَّت طَّاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَوۡ یُضِلُّونَكُمۡ وَمَا یُضِلُّونَ إِلَّاۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَمَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٦٩

A sect of the people of the Book long to lead you astray, but they only lead themselves astray, and they perceive not

waddat ṭāifatun min ahli l-kitābi law yuḍillūnakum wamā yuḍillūna illā anfusahum wamā yashʿurūn

یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لِمَ تَكۡفُرُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَنتُمۡ تَشۡهَدُونَ ۝٧٠

O people of the Book! Why disbelieve you the revelations of Allah, when you yourselves witness them

yāahla l-kitābi lima takfurūna biāyāti l-lahi wa-antum tashhadūn

یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لِمَ تَلۡبِسُونَ ٱلۡحَقَّ بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ وَتَكۡتُمُونَ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَأَنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧١

O people of the Book! Why do you clothe the truth with falsehood and knowingly hide the truth

yāahla l-kitābi lima talbisūna l-ḥaqa bil-bāṭili wataktumūna l-ḥaqa wa-antum taʿlamūn

8 Devices against Islam

وَقَالَت طَّاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱلَّذِیۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَجۡهَ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَٱكۡفُرُوۤا۟ ءَاخِرَهُۥ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٧٢

A sect of the people of the Book say, "Believe in what was revealed to those who believed at the first appearance of the day, and disbelieve it at the end thereof" - that (others) may perchance go back (from their faith)

waqālat ṭāifatun min ahli l-kitābi āminū bi-alladhī unzila ʿalā alladhīna āmanū wajha l-nahāri wa-uk'furū ākhirahu laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

وَلَا تُؤۡمِنُوۤا۟ إِلَّا لِمَن تَبِعَ دِینَكُمۡ قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ هُدَى ٱللَّهِ أَن یُؤۡتَىٰۤ أَحَدࣱ مِّثۡلَ مَاۤ أُوتِیتُمۡ أَوۡ یُحَاۤجُّوكُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّكُمۡۗ قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡفَضۡلَ بِیَدِ ٱللَّهِ یُؤۡتِیهِ مَن یَشَاۤءُۗ وَٱللَّهُ وَ ٰسِعٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٧٣

"Do not believe save one who follows your religion." Say (unto them), "Verily, the (true) guidance is the guidance of Allah (alone), that any one should be given like what you are given." Or would they dispute with you before your Lor

walā tu'minū illā liman tabiʿa dīnakum qul inna l-hudā hudā l-lahi an yu'tā aḥadun mith'la mā ūtītum aw yuḥājjūkum ʿinda rabbikum qul inna l-faḍla biyadi l-lahi yu'tīhi man yashāu wal-lahu wāsiʿun ʿalīmu

یَخۡتَصُّ بِرَحۡمَتِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلۡفَضۡلِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٤

He especially selects for His mercy whom he pleases, for Allah is Lord of Unbounded Grace

yakhtaṣṣu biraḥmatihi man yashāu wal-lahu dhū l-faḍli l-ʿaẓīm

۞ وَمِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مَنۡ إِن تَأۡمَنۡهُ بِقِنطَارࣲ یُؤَدِّهِۦۤ إِلَیۡكَ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ إِن تَأۡمَنۡهُ بِدِینَارࣲ لَّا یُؤَدِّهِۦۤ إِلَیۡكَ إِلَّا مَا دُمۡتَ عَلَیۡهِ قَاۤىِٕمࣰاۗ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَالُوا۟ لَیۡسَ عَلَیۡنَا فِی ٱلۡأُمِّیِّـۧنَ سَبِیلࣱ وَیَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٥

And among the people of the Book, there are some who, if you entrust them with a hoard of gold, will readily return it to you; and others among them, if you entrust them with a single coin, will not return it unless you keep standing over them. That is b

wamin ahli l-kitābi man in tamanhu biqinṭārin yu-addihi ilayka wamin'hum man in tamanhu bidīnārin lā yu-addihi ilayka illā mā dum'ta ʿalayhi qāiman dhālika bi-annahum qālū laysa ʿalaynā fī l-umiyīna sabīlun wayaqūlūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba wahum yaʿlamūn

بَلَىٰۚ مَنۡ أَوۡفَىٰ بِعَهۡدِهِۦ وَٱتَّقَىٰ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٧٦

Nay, whoever fulfils his covenant and acts righteously, - verily, Allah loves those who act righteously

balā man awfā biʿahdihi wa-ittaqā fa-inna l-laha yuḥibbu l-mutaqīn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَشۡتَرُونَ بِعَهۡدِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَیۡمَـٰنِهِمۡ ثَمَنࣰا قَلِیلًا أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَا خَلَـٰقَ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَلَا یُكَلِّمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَا یَنظُرُ إِلَیۡهِمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَلَا یُزَكِّیهِمۡ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٧٧

Verily, those who sell Allah´s covenant and their oaths for a small price, these have no portion in the Hereafter. Allah will not speak to them, and will not look upon them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He make them grow (spiritually); but t

inna alladhīna yashtarūna biʿahdi l-lahi wa-aymānihim thamanan qalīlan ulāika lā khalāqa lahum fī l-ākhirati walā yukallimuhumu l-lahu walā yanẓuru ilayhim yawma l-qiyāmati walā yuzakkīhim walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَإِنَّ مِنۡهُمۡ لَفَرِیقࣰا یَلۡوُۥنَ أَلۡسِنَتَهُم بِٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لِتَحۡسَبُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَمَا هُوَ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَیَقُولُونَ هُوَ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا هُوَ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٨

And, verily, amongst them is a sect who twist the Scriptures with their tongues, that you may suppose it to be from the Book, but it is not from the Book. They say, "It is from Allah," but it is not from Allah, and they tell a lie against Allah

wa-inna min'hum lafarīqan yalwūna alsinatahum bil-kitābi litaḥsabūhu mina l-kitābi wamā huwa mina l-kitābi wayaqūlūna huwa min ʿindi l-lahi wamā huwa min ʿindi l-lahi wayaqūlūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba wahum yaʿlamūn

مَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَن یُؤۡتِیَهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحُكۡمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ ثُمَّ یَقُولَ لِلنَّاسِ كُونُوا۟ عِبَادࣰا لِّی مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِن كُونُوا۟ رَبَّـٰنِیِّـۧنَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تُعَلِّمُونَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَبِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَدۡرُسُونَ ۝٧٩

It is not possible for a man to whom Allah has given the Scripture and the Wisdom and the Prophethood, that then he should say to men, "Be you servants of mine rather than of Allah;" but (what he said was) "Be you rather faithful servants

mā kāna libasharin an yu'tiyahu l-lahu l-kitāba wal-ḥuk'ma wal-nubuwata thumma yaqūla lilnnāsi kūnū ʿibādan lī min dūni l-lahi walākin kūnū rabbāniyyīna bimā kuntum tuʿallimūna l-kitāba wabimā kuntum tadrusūn

وَلَا یَأۡمُرَكُمۡ أَن تَتَّخِذُوا۟ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ وَٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ أَرۡبَابًاۗ أَیَأۡمُرُكُم بِٱلۡكُفۡرِ بَعۡدَ إِذۡ أَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ ۝٨٠

He does not command you to take the angels and the prophets for your Lords; would He bid you faithlessness after you have surrendered

walā yamurakum an tattakhidhū l-malāikata wal-nabiyīna arbāban ayamurukum bil-kuf'ri baʿda idh antum mus'limūn

9 Covenant of Prophets

وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِیثَـٰقَ ٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ لَمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡتُكُم مِّن كِتَـٰبࣲ وَحِكۡمَةࣲ ثُمَّ جَاۤءَكُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مُّصَدِّقࣱ لِّمَا مَعَكُمۡ لَتُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهِۦ وَلَتَنصُرُنَّهُۥۚ قَالَ ءَأَقۡرَرۡتُمۡ وَأَخَذۡتُمۡ عَلَىٰ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ إِصۡرِیۖ قَالُوۤا۟ أَقۡرَرۡنَاۚ قَالَ فَٱشۡهَدُوا۟ وَأَنَا۠ مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِینَ ۝٨١

When Allah made the covenant with the prophets, (He said) "Behold, what I have given you of the Book and Wisdom. Then shall come to you a Messenger confirming that which you possess. You shall believe in him and help him." And He said, "Ar

wa-idh akhadha l-lahu mīthāqa l-nabiyīna lamā ātaytukum min kitābin waḥik'matin thumma jāakum rasūlun muṣaddiqun limā maʿakum latu'minunna bihi walatanṣurunnahu qāla a-aqrartum wa-akhadhtum ʿalā dhālikum iṣ'rī qālū aqrarnā qāla fa-ish'hadū wa-anā maʿakum mina l-shāhidīn

فَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ بَعۡدَ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ ۝٨٢

But they who turns back after this, these are the miscreants."

faman tawallā baʿda dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-fāsiqūn

أَفَغَیۡرَ دِینِ ٱللَّهِ یَبۡغُونَ وَلَهُۥۤ أَسۡلَمَ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ طَوۡعࣰا وَكَرۡهࣰا وَإِلَیۡهِ یُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٨٣

Seek they other than Allah´s religion? When to Him surrenders whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and unto Him shall they return

afaghayra dīni l-lahi yabghūna walahu aslama man fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi ṭawʿan wakarhan wa-ilayhi yur'jaʿūn

قُلۡ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡنَا وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَإِسۡمَـٰعِیلَ وَإِسۡحَـٰقَ وَیَعۡقُوبَ وَٱلۡأَسۡبَاطِ وَمَاۤ أُوتِیَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِیسَىٰ وَٱلنَّبِیُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَیۡنَ أَحَدࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ وَنَحۡنُ لَهُۥ مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٨٤

Say, "We believe in Allah, and what has been revealed to you , and what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and what was given to Moses, and Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord, - we make no distinction be

qul āmannā bil-lahi wamā unzila ʿalaynā wamā unzila ʿalā ib'rāhīma wa-is'māʿīla wa-is'ḥāqa wayaʿqūba wal-asbāṭi wamā ūtiya mūsā waʿīsā wal-nabiyūna min rabbihim lā nufarriqu bayna aḥadin min'hum wanaḥnu lahu mus'limūn

وَمَن یَبۡتَغِ غَیۡرَ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِ دِینࣰا فَلَن یُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٨٥

Whoever craves a religion other than the Surrender (Islam), it shall surely not be accepted from him, and he shall be a loser in the Hereafter."

waman yabtaghi ghayra l-is'lāmi dīnan falan yuq'bala min'hu wahuwa fī l-ākhirati mina l-khāsirīn

كَیۡفَ یَهۡدِی ٱللَّهُ قَوۡمࣰا كَفَرُوا۟ بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِهِمۡ وَشَهِدُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱلرَّسُولَ حَقࣱّ وَجَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتُۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٨٦

How shall Allah guide people who have disbelieved after believing and bearing witness that the Apostle is true, and after there come to them manifest signs? Allah guides not the unjust folk

kayfa yahdī l-lahu qawman kafarū baʿda īmānihim washahidū anna l-rasūla ḥaqqun wajāahumu l-bayinātu wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ جَزَاۤؤُهُمۡ أَنَّ عَلَیۡهِمۡ لَعۡنَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٨٧

As for such their reward is that on them is the curse of Allah, and of the angels, and of all mankind (collectively)

ulāika jazāuhum anna ʿalayhim laʿnata l-lahi wal-malāikati wal-nāsi ajmaʿīn

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا لَا یُخَفَّفُ عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمۡ یُنظَرُونَ ۝٨٨

They shall dwell therein - the torment shall not be lightened from them, nor shall they have respite

khālidīna fīhā lā yukhaffafu ʿanhumu l-ʿadhābu walā hum yunẓarūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَ ٰلِكَ وَأَصۡلَحُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝٨٩

Save those who repent after that, and do right (or make amends), for verily, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

illā alladhīna tābū min baʿdi dhālika wa-aṣlaḥū fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِهِمۡ ثُمَّ ٱزۡدَادُوا۟ كُفۡرࣰا لَّن تُقۡبَلَ تَوۡبَتُهُمۡ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ۝٩٠

Verily, those who disbelieve after believing, and then increase in disbelief, their repentance shall not be accepted; these are those who are astray

inna alladhīna kafarū baʿda īmānihim thumma iz'dādū kuf'ran lan tuq'bala tawbatuhum wa-ulāika humu l-ḍālūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمۡ كُفَّارࣱ فَلَن یُقۡبَلَ مِنۡ أَحَدِهِم مِّلۡءُ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ذَهَبࣰا وَلَوِ ٱفۡتَدَىٰ بِهِۦۤۗ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٩١

Verily, those who disbelieve (or reject faith) and die in disbelief, there shall not be accepted from any one of them the earth-full of gold, though he should give it as a ransom. For them is grievous woe, and no helpers have they

inna alladhīna kafarū wamātū wahum kuffārun falan yuq'bala min aḥadihim mil'u l-arḍi dhahaban walawi if'tadā bihi ulāika lahum ʿadhābun alīmun wamā lahum min nāṣirīn

10 Ever-living testimony to Islam

لَن تَنَالُوا۟ ٱلۡبِرَّ حَتَّىٰ تُنفِقُوا۟ مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَۚ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا۟ مِن شَیۡءࣲ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِهِۦ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٩٢

You cannot attain to righteousness until you spend freely of what you love. But what you spend, of that Allah is aware

lan tanālū l-bira ḥattā tunfiqū mimmā tuḥibbūna wamā tunfiqū min shayin fa-inna l-laha bihi ʿalīmu

۞ كُلُّ ٱلطَّعَامِ كَانَ حِلࣰّا لِّبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ إِلَّا مَا حَرَّمَ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلُ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن تُنَزَّلَ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةُۚ قُلۡ فَأۡتُوا۟ بِٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةِ فَٱتۡلُوهَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٩٣

All food was lawful to the children of Israel save what Israel made unlawful to itself before the Torah was revealed. Say, "Bring the Torah and recite it, if you speak the truth."

kullu l-ṭaʿāmi kāna ḥillan libanī is'rāīla illā mā ḥarrama is'rāīlu ʿalā nafsihi min qabli an tunazzala l-tawrātu qul fatū bil-tawrāti fa-it'lūhā in kuntum ṣādiqīn

فَمَنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٩٤

But whoever invents against Allah a lie, after that, they are, indeed, the wrong-doers

famani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba min baʿdi dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-ẓālimūn

قُلۡ صَدَقَ ٱللَّهُۗ فَٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مِلَّةَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ حَنِیفࣰاۖ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٩٥

Say, "Allah speaks the truth, then follow the faith of Abraham, a "Hanif" (an upright or righteous man), who was not of the idolaters."

qul ṣadaqa l-lahu fa-ittabiʿū millata ib'rāhīma ḥanīfan wamā kāna mina l-mush'rikīn

إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَیۡتࣲ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِی بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكࣰا وَهُدࣰى لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٦

Verily, the first House founded for men was surely that at Bekkah (Mecca), a blessed place and a guidance to the worlds

inna awwala baytin wuḍiʿa lilnnāsi lalladhī bibakkata mubārakan wahudan lil'ʿālamīn

فِیهِ ءَایَـٰتُۢ بَیِّنَـٰتࣱ مَّقَامُ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَۖ وَمَن دَخَلَهُۥ كَانَ ءَامِنࣰاۗ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلۡبَیۡتِ مَنِ ٱسۡتَطَاعَ إِلَیۡهِ سَبِیلࣰاۚ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِیٌّ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٧

Therein are manifest signs - Abraham´s station, and whoever enters it is safe. It is a duty to Allah for man to make the pilgrimage unto the House, for whoever can find his way there (or can afford it). But whoever disbelieves - Allah is Independen

fīhi āyātun bayyinātun maqāmu ib'rāhīma waman dakhalahu kāna āminan walillahi ʿalā l-nāsi ḥijju l-bayti mani is'taṭāʿa ilayhi sabīlan waman kafara fa-inna l-laha ghaniyyun ʿani l-ʿālamīn

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لِمَ تَكۡفُرُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ شَهِیدٌ عَلَىٰ مَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٨

Say, "O people of the Book! Why do you disbelieve in Allah´s revelations, when Allah is witness of what you do?"

qul yāahla l-kitābi lima takfurūna biāyāti l-lahi wal-lahu shahīdun ʿalā mā taʿmalūn

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لِمَ تَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ تَبۡغُونَهَا عِوَجࣰا وَأَنتُمۡ شُهَدَاۤءُۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٩

Say, "O people of the Book! Why do you turn from the way of Allah him who believes, craving to make it crooked, when you are yourselves witnesses (of Allah´s covenant)? But Allah is not unmindful of what you do."

qul yāahla l-kitābi lima taṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi man āmana tabghūnahā ʿiwajan wa-antum shuhadāu wamā l-lahu bighāfilin ʿammā taʿmalūn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِن تُطِیعُوا۟ فَرِیقࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یَرُدُّوكُم بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِكُمۡ كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٠٠

O you who believe! If you obey the sect of those to whom the Book was brought, they will turn you from believers to unbelievers again

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū in tuṭīʿū farīqan mina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba yaruddūkum baʿda īmānikum kāfirīn

وَكَیۡفَ تَكۡفُرُونَ وَأَنتُمۡ تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِ وَفِیكُمۡ رَسُولُهُۥۗ وَمَن یَعۡتَصِم بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ هُدِیَ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

How can you disbelieve while unto you are recited the revelations of Allah, and among you is His Messenger? But whoever takes tight hold on Allah, he is guided into the Straight Way

wakayfa takfurūna wa-antum tut'lā ʿalaykum āyātu l-lahi wafīkum rasūluhu waman yaʿtaṣim bil-lahi faqad hudiya ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

11 Muslims exhorted to remain united

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِۦ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ ۝١٠٢

O you who believe! Observe your duty to (or fear or respect) Allah with the right observance (or with the fear or respect that He deserves), and die not save as those who have surrendered (in a state of Islam)

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū ittaqū l-laha ḥaqqa tuqātihi walā tamūtunna illā wa-antum mus'limūn

وَٱعۡتَصِمُوا۟ بِحَبۡلِ ٱللَّهِ جَمِیعࣰا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا۟ۚ وَٱذۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡكُمۡ إِذۡ كُنتُمۡ أَعۡدَاۤءࣰ فَأَلَّفَ بَیۡنَ قُلُوبِكُمۡ فَأَصۡبَحۡتُم بِنِعۡمَتِهِۦۤ إِخۡوَ ٰنࣰا وَكُنتُمۡ عَلَىٰ شَفَا حُفۡرَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ فَأَنقَذَكُم مِّنۡهَاۗ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٠٣

Hold fast, all together, to the cable of Allah, and do not separate (divide or part in sects); but remember the favours of Allah towards you, when you were enemies and He made friendship between your heart, and on the morrow you became brothers, by His g

wa-iʿ'taṣimū biḥabli l-lahi jamīʿan walā tafarraqū wa-udh'kurū niʿ'mata l-lahi ʿalaykum idh kuntum aʿdāan fa-allafa bayna qulūbikum fa-aṣbaḥtum biniʿ'matihi ikh'wānan wakuntum ʿalā shafā ḥuf'ratin mina l-nāri fa-anqadhakum min'hā kadhālika yubayyinu l-lahu lakum āyātihi laʿallakum tahtadūn

وَلۡتَكُن مِّنكُمۡ أُمَّةࣱ یَدۡعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡخَیۡرِ وَیَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَیَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١٠٤

And that there may spring from you a nation who invite to goodness, and bid right conduct, and forbid what is wrong (or indecent); these are the successful

waltakun minkum ummatun yadʿūna ilā l-khayri wayamurūna bil-maʿrūfi wayanhawna ʿani l-munkari wa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِینَ تَفَرَّقُوا۟ وَٱخۡتَلَفُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتُۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٠٥

Be not like those who parted in sects and disagreed after there came to them manifest signs; for them is mighty woe

walā takūnū ka-alladhīna tafarraqū wa-ikh'talafū min baʿdi mā jāahumu l-bayinātu wa-ulāika lahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

یَوۡمَ تَبۡیَضُّ وُجُوهࣱ وَتَسۡوَدُّ وُجُوهࣱۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡوَدَّتۡ وُجُوهُهُمۡ أَكَفَرۡتُم بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِكُمۡ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡفُرُونَ ۝١٠٦

On the day when faces shall be whitened and faces shall be blackened. As for those whose faces are blackened, - "Did you disbelieve after your faith, then taste the torment for your disbelief."

yawma tabyaḍḍu wujūhun wataswaddu wujūhun fa-ammā alladhīna is'waddat wujūhuhum akafartum baʿda īmānikum fadhūqū l-ʿadhāba bimā kuntum takfurūn

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ٱبۡیَضَّتۡ وُجُوهُهُمۡ فَفِی رَحۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١٠٧

But as for those whose faces are whitened, in Allah´s mercy they shall dwell forever

wa-ammā alladhīna ib'yaḍḍat wujūhuhum fafī raḥmati l-lahi hum fīhā khālidūn

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِ نَتۡلُوهَا عَلَیۡكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ یُرِیدُ ظُلۡمࣰا لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٨

These are the revelations of Allah. We recite them to you in truth, for Allah desires not injustice unto the worlds (or His creatures)

til'ka āyātu l-lahi natlūhā ʿalayka bil-ḥaqi wamā l-lahu yurīdu ẓul'man lil'ʿālamīn

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ تُرۡجَعُ ٱلۡأُمُورُ ۝١٠٩

Allah´s is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and unto Allah do all affairs return

walillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wa-ilā l-lahi tur'jaʿu l-umūr

12 Relations of Jews with Muslims

كُنتُمۡ خَیۡرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخۡرِجَتۡ لِلنَّاسِ تَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَتَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَتُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِۗ وَلَوۡ ءَامَنَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَكَانَ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۚ مِّنۡهُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ ۝١١٠

You were the best of nations brought forth unto man. You bid what is reasonable, and forbid what is inappropriate (indecent, wrong), believing in Allah. Had the people of the Book believed, it would have been better for them. There are believers among th

kuntum khayra ummatin ukh'rijat lilnnāsi tamurūna bil-maʿrūfi watanhawna ʿani l-munkari watu'minūna bil-lahi walaw āmana ahlu l-kitābi lakāna khayran lahum min'humu l-mu'minūna wa-aktharuhumu l-fāsiqūn

لَن یَضُرُّوكُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَذࣰىۖ وَإِن یُقَـٰتِلُوكُمۡ یُوَلُّوكُمُ ٱلۡأَدۡبَارَ ثُمَّ لَا یُنصَرُونَ ۝١١١

They shall surely not harm you save a trifle; and if they fight you, they shall show you their backs (flee), then they shall not be helped

lan yaḍurrūkum illā adhan wa-in yuqātilūkum yuwallūkumu l-adbāra thumma lā yunṣarūn

ضُرِبَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلذِّلَّةُ أَیۡنَ مَا ثُقِفُوۤا۟ إِلَّا بِحَبۡلࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَحَبۡلࣲ مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَبَاۤءُو بِغَضَبࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَضُرِبَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡمَسۡكَنَةُۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ یَكۡفُرُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَقۡتُلُونَ ٱلۡأَنۢبِیَاۤءَ بِغَیۡرِ حَقࣲّۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوا۟ وَّكَانُوا۟ یَعۡتَدُونَ ۝١١٢

They are smitten with abasement wherever they be found, save for the rope of Allah and the rope of man (the ties of the covenant); and they draw on themselves wrath from Allah and are smitten with wretchedness; that is because they did disbelieve in Alla

ḍuribat ʿalayhimu l-dhilatu ayna mā thuqifū illā biḥablin mina l-lahi waḥablin mina l-nāsi wabāū bighaḍabin mina l-lahi waḍuribat ʿalayhimu l-maskanatu dhālika bi-annahum kānū yakfurūna biāyāti l-lahi wayaqtulūna l-anbiyāa bighayri ḥaqqin dhālika bimā ʿaṣaw wakānū yaʿtadūn

۞ لَیۡسُوا۟ سَوَاۤءࣰۗ مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أُمَّةࣱ قَاۤىِٕمَةࣱ یَتۡلُونَ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ءَانَاۤءَ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَهُمۡ یَسۡجُدُونَ ۝١١٣

They are not all alike. Of the people of the Book there is an upright community, reciting the revelations of Allah throughout the night, falling prostrate (in Surrender)

laysū sawāan min ahli l-kitābi ummatun qāimatun yatlūna āyāti l-lahi ānāa al-layli wahum yasjudūn

یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَیَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَیَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَیُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِی ٱلۡخَیۡرَ ٰتِۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١١٤

They believe in Allah, and in the last day, and bid intelligent (or right) conduct, and forbid what is stupid (or wrong), and vie with one another in good works; these are among the righteous

yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wayamurūna bil-maʿrūfi wayanhawna ʿani l-munkari wayusāriʿūna fī l-khayrāti wa-ulāika mina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَمَا یَفۡعَلُوا۟ مِنۡ خَیۡرࣲ فَلَن یُكۡفَرُوهُۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمُۢ بِٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١١٥

What good they do, surely Allah will not deny its merit, for Allah is Aware of those who fear (or repel) evil

wamā yafʿalū min khayrin falan yuk'farūhu wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-mutaqīn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَن تُغۡنِیَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١١٦

Verily, those who disbelieve, their wealth and children are of no service to them against Allah; they are the rightful owners of the Fire, and they shall dwell therein

inna alladhīna kafarū lan tugh'niya ʿanhum amwāluhum walā awlāduhum mina l-lahi shayan wa-ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

مَثَلُ مَا یُنفِقُونَ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا كَمَثَلِ رِیحࣲ فِیهَا صِرٌّ أَصَابَتۡ حَرۡثَ قَوۡمࣲ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ فَأَهۡلَكَتۡهُۚ وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِنۡ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١١٧

The likeness of what they spend in this life of the world is as the likeness of wind wherein is a cold blast that falls upon the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves and destroys it. It is not Allah who wrongs them, but it is themselves they w

mathalu mā yunfiqūna fī hādhihi l-ḥayati l-dun'yā kamathali rīḥin fīhā ṣirrun aṣābat ḥartha qawmin ẓalamū anfusahum fa-ahlakathu wamā ẓalamahumu l-lahu walākin anfusahum yaẓlimūn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ بِطَانَةࣰ مِّن دُونِكُمۡ لَا یَأۡلُونَكُمۡ خَبَالࣰا وَدُّوا۟ مَا عَنِتُّمۡ قَدۡ بَدَتِ ٱلۡبَغۡضَاۤءُ مِنۡ أَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَمَا تُخۡفِی صُدُورُهُمۡ أَكۡبَرُۚ قَدۡ بَیَّنَّا لَكُمُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١١٨

O you who believe! Take not for intimates others than your own folk, who would not fail to ruin you; they love to obstruct you. Hatred is shown by their mouths; but what their breasts conceal is greater still. We have made manifest to you Our revelations

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū biṭānatan min dūnikum lā yalūnakum khabālan waddū mā ʿanittum qad badati l-baghḍāu min afwāhihim wamā tukh'fī ṣudūruhum akbaru qad bayyannā lakumu l-āyāti in kuntum taʿqilūn

هَـٰۤأَنتُمۡ أُو۟لَاۤءِ تُحِبُّونَهُمۡ وَلَا یُحِبُّونَكُمۡ وَتُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ كُلِّهِۦ وَإِذَا لَقُوكُمۡ قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوۡا۟ عَضُّوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡأَنَامِلَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَیۡظِۚ قُلۡ مُوتُوا۟ بِغَیۡظِكُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝١١٩

Verily, it is you who love them, but they love not you; and you believe in the whole of the Scripture. But when they meet you they say, "We believe;" and when they go aside they bite their fingertips at you through rage. Say, "Die in your

hāantum ulāi tuḥibbūnahum walā yuḥibbūnakum watu'minūna bil-kitābi kullihi wa-idhā laqūkum qālū āmannā wa-idhā khalaw ʿaḍḍū ʿalaykumu l-anāmila mina l-ghayẓi qul mūtū bighayẓikum inna l-laha ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

إِن تَمۡسَسۡكُمۡ حَسَنَةࣱ تَسُؤۡهُمۡ وَإِن تُصِبۡكُمۡ سَیِّئَةࣱ یَفۡرَحُوا۟ بِهَاۖ وَإِن تَصۡبِرُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ لَا یَضُرُّكُمۡ كَیۡدُهُمۡ شَیۡءًاۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِیطࣱ ۝١٢٠

If good luck touches you it is bad for them, but if bad luck befalls you they rejoice therein; yet if you are patient and fear, their tricks shall not harm you. Lo, Allah is surrounding what they do

in tamsaskum ḥasanatun tasu'hum wa-in tuṣib'kum sayyi-atun yafraḥū bihā wa-in taṣbirū watattaqū lā yaḍurrukum kayduhum shayan inna l-laha bimā yaʿmalūna muḥīṭu

13 Battle of Uhud

وَإِذۡ غَدَوۡتَ مِنۡ أَهۡلِكَ تُبَوِّئُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ مَقَـٰعِدَ لِلۡقِتَالِۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ ۝١٢١

When you did set forth early from your household to settle for the believers the positions for battle, Allah was Hearer and Knower

wa-idh ghadawta min ahlika tubawwi-u l-mu'minīna maqāʿida lil'qitāli wal-lahu samīʿun ʿalīmu

إِذۡ هَمَّت طَّاۤىِٕفَتَانِ مِنكُمۡ أَن تَفۡشَلَا وَٱللَّهُ وَلِیُّهُمَاۗ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٢٢

When two companies of you almost fell away in cowardice but Allah was their Guardian (or Protecting Friend), for on Allah surely do believers put their trust

idh hammat ṭāifatāni minkum an tafshalā wal-lahu waliyyuhumā waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

وَلَقَدۡ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِبَدۡرࣲ وَأَنتُمۡ أَذِلَّةࣱۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢٣

Allah gave you victory at Badr when you were in a contemptible force; so do your duty to Allah in thankfulness

walaqad naṣarakumu l-lahu bibadrin wa-antum adhillatun fa-ittaqū l-laha laʿallakum tashkurūn

إِذۡ تَقُولُ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ أَلَن یَكۡفِیَكُمۡ أَن یُمِدَّكُمۡ رَبُّكُم بِثَلَـٰثَةِ ءَالَـٰفࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ مُنزَلِینَ ۝١٢٤

When you did say unto the believers, "Is it not enough for you that your Lord supports you with three thousand of the angels sent down from on high

idh taqūlu lil'mu'minīna alan yakfiyakum an yumiddakum rabbukum bithalāthati ālāfin mina l-malāikati munzalīn

بَلَىٰۤۚ إِن تَصۡبِرُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ وَیَأۡتُوكُم مِّن فَوۡرِهِمۡ هَـٰذَا یُمۡدِدۡكُمۡ رَبُّكُم بِخَمۡسَةِ ءَالَـٰفࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ مُسَوِّمِینَ ۝١٢٥

Yea, if you persevere and avoid evil, and the enemy attacks you suddenly, your Lord will assist you with five thousand of His angels with force

balā in taṣbirū watattaqū wayatūkum min fawrihim hādhā yum'did'kum rabbukum bikhamsati ālāfin mina l-malāikati musawwimīn

وَمَا جَعَلَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بُشۡرَىٰ لَكُمۡ وَلِتَطۡمَىِٕنَّ قُلُوبُكُم بِهِۦۗ وَمَا ٱلنَّصۡرُ إِلَّا مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡحَكِیمِ ۝١٢٦

Allah ordained this only as glad tidings to comfort your heart withal, for victory comes but from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise

wamā jaʿalahu l-lahu illā bush'rā lakum walitaṭma-inna qulūbukum bihi wamā l-naṣru illā min ʿindi l-lahi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥakīm

لِیَقۡطَعَ طَرَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَوۡ یَكۡبِتَهُمۡ فَیَنقَلِبُوا۟ خَاۤىِٕبِینَ ۝١٢٧

That He may cut off some of the faithless, or overwhelm them that they may retire frustrated (from their purpose)

liyaqṭaʿa ṭarafan mina alladhīna kafarū aw yakbitahum fayanqalibū khāibīn

لَیۡسَ لَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ شَیۡءٌ أَوۡ یَتُوبَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَوۡ یُعَذِّبَهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ ظَـٰلِمُونَ ۝١٢٨

It (the concern, responsibility or decision) is not for you whether He turns towards them again or punish them; for, verily, they are evil-doers

laysa laka mina l-amri shayon aw yatūba ʿalayhim aw yuʿadhibahum fa-innahum ẓālimūn

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ یَغۡفِرُ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیُعَذِّبُ مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٢٩

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and in the earth. He forgives whom He will, and punishes whom He will. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

walillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi yaghfiru liman yashāu wayuʿadhibu man yashāu wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmu

14 Success meant for Muslims

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأۡكُلُوا۟ ٱلرِّبَوٰۤا۟ أَضۡعَـٰفࣰا مُّضَـٰعَفَةࣰۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١٣٠

O you who believe! Devour not usury doubling and redoubling, but do your duty to Allah that you may be successful

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā takulū l-riba aḍʿāfan muḍāʿafatan wa-ittaqū l-laha laʿallakum tuf'liḥūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِیۤ أُعِدَّتۡ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٣١

Avoid the fire which is prepared for the faithless

wa-ittaqū l-nāra allatī uʿiddat lil'kāfirīn

وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ ۝١٣٢

And obey Allah and His Messenger, that you may get mercy

wa-aṭīʿū l-laha wal-rasūla laʿallakum tur'ḥamūn

۞ وَسَارِعُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغۡفِرَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرۡضُهَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ أُعِدَّتۡ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٣٣

And vie with one another for pardon from your Lord, and for Paradise, the breadth of which is as the heaven and the earth, prepared for those who fear (or avoid) evil

wasāriʿū ilā maghfiratin min rabbikum wajannatin ʿarḍuhā l-samāwātu wal-arḍu uʿiddat lil'muttaqīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یُنفِقُونَ فِی ٱلسَّرَّاۤءِ وَٱلضَّرَّاۤءِ وَٱلۡكَـٰظِمِینَ ٱلۡغَیۡظَ وَٱلۡعَافِینَ عَنِ ٱلنَّاسِۗ وَٱللَّهُ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٣٤

Those who give charity, both in prosperity and in adversity, for those who control their rage, and those who are forgiving towards mankind. Allah loves the good

alladhīna yunfiqūna fī l-sarāi wal-ḍarāi wal-kāẓimīna l-ghayẓa wal-ʿāfīna ʿani l-nāsi wal-lahu yuḥibbu l-muḥ'sinīn

وَٱلَّذِینَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا۟ فَـٰحِشَةً أَوۡ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ ذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرُوا۟ لِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَمَن یَغۡفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَلَمۡ یُصِرُّوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلُوا۟ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٥

Those who when they do an evil, or wrong themselves, remember Allah, and ask forgiveness for their sins - and who forgives sins save Allah alone? - And do not knowingly repeat the wrong they did

wa-alladhīna idhā faʿalū fāḥishatan aw ẓalamū anfusahum dhakarū l-laha fa-is'taghfarū lidhunūbihim waman yaghfiru l-dhunūba illā l-lahu walam yuṣirrū ʿalā mā faʿalū wahum yaʿlamūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ جَزَاۤؤُهُم مَّغۡفِرَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡ وَجَنَّـٰتࣱ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ وَنِعۡمَ أَجۡرُ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلِینَ ۝١٣٦

The reward for such is forgiveness from their Lord, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling therein for ever - an excellent reward for those who strive

ulāika jazāuhum maghfiratun min rabbihim wajannātun tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā waniʿ'ma ajru l-ʿāmilīn

قَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ سُنَنࣱ فَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝١٣٧

Systems have passed away before your time. Do travel in the earth, and see what was the consequence of those who denied (the prophets or Allah´s guidance)

qad khalat min qablikum sunanun fasīrū fī l-arḍi fa-unẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīn

هَـٰذَا بَیَانࣱ لِّلنَّاسِ وَهُدࣰى وَمَوۡعِظَةࣱ لِّلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٣٨

This is an explanation unto men, and a guidance and a warning unto those who fear evil

hādhā bayānun lilnnāsi wahudan wamawʿiẓatun lil'muttaqīn

وَلَا تَهِنُوا۟ وَلَا تَحۡزَنُوا۟ وَأَنتُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَوۡنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩

Do not give way nor grieve, for you shall overcome them if you but be faithful

walā tahinū walā taḥzanū wa-antumu l-aʿlawna in kuntum mu'minīn

إِن یَمۡسَسۡكُمۡ قَرۡحࣱ فَقَدۡ مَسَّ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ قَرۡحࣱ مِّثۡلُهُۥۚ وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡأَیَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَیۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلِیَعۡلَمَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَیَتَّخِذَ مِنكُمۡ شُهَدَاۤءَۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٤٠

If a wound touches you, a similar wound has touched the others: these are only the vicissitudes of varying fortune which we bring in turn to mankind that Allah may know those who it is that believe, and may choose from you witnesses, for Allah loves not

in yamsaskum qarḥun faqad massa l-qawma qarḥun mith'luhu watil'ka l-ayāmu nudāwiluhā bayna l-nāsi waliyaʿlama l-lahu alladhīna āmanū wayattakhidha minkum shuhadāa wal-lahu lā yuḥibbu l-ẓālimīn

وَلِیُمَحِّصَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَیَمۡحَقَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٤١

And that Allah may prove those who believe, and blot out the disbelievers

waliyumaḥḥiṣa l-lahu alladhīna āmanū wayamḥaqa l-kāfirīn

أَمۡ حَسِبۡتُمۡ أَن تَدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ وَلَمَّا یَعۡلَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ مِنكُمۡ وَیَعۡلَمَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٤٢

Did you think that you can enter Paradise without Allah testing those of you who fight (or strive) hard, and remain steadfast

am ḥasib'tum an tadkhulū l-janata walammā yaʿlami l-lahu alladhīna jāhadū minkum wayaʿlama l-ṣābirīn

وَلَقَدۡ كُنتُمۡ تَمَنَّوۡنَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن تَلۡقَوۡهُ فَقَدۡ رَأَیۡتُمُوهُ وَأَنتُمۡ تَنظُرُونَ ۝١٤٣

Verily, you used to long for death before you met it! Now you see it (and flinch)

walaqad kuntum tamannawna l-mawta min qabli an talqawhu faqad ra-aytumūhu wa-antum tanẓurūn

15 Perseverance in Sufferings

وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولࣱ قَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِن قَبۡلِهِ ٱلرُّسُلُۚ أَفَإِی۟ن مَّاتَ أَوۡ قُتِلَ ٱنقَلَبۡتُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَعۡقَـٰبِكُمۡۚ وَمَن یَنقَلِبۡ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَیۡهِ فَلَن یَضُرَّ ٱللَّهَ شَیۡءࣰاۗ وَسَیَجۡزِی ٱللَّهُ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝١٤٤

Mohammed is but a Messenger, messengers (the like of whom) have passed away before his time. What if he die or is killed, will you retreat upon your heels? He who retreats does no harm to Allah at all; but Allah will recompense the thankful

wamā muḥammadun illā rasūlun qad khalat min qablihi l-rusulu afa-in māta aw qutila inqalabtum ʿalā aʿqābikum waman yanqalib ʿalā ʿaqibayhi falan yaḍurra l-laha shayan wasayajzī l-lahu l-shākirīn

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفۡسٍ أَن تَمُوتَ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ كِتَـٰبࣰا مُّؤَجَّلࣰاۗ وَمَن یُرِدۡ ثَوَابَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا نُؤۡتِهِۦ مِنۡهَا وَمَن یُرِدۡ ثَوَابَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ نُؤۡتِهِۦ مِنۡهَاۚ وَسَنَجۡزِی ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝١٤٥

It is not for any soul to die, save by Allah´s permission, written down for an appointed time; but he who wishes for the reward of this world We will give him of it, and he who wishes for the reward of the Hereafter We will give him of it, and We w

wamā kāna linafsin an tamūta illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi kitāban mu-ajjalan waman yurid thawāba l-dun'yā nu'tihi min'hā waman yurid thawāba l-ākhirati nu'tihi min'hā wasanajzī l-shākirīn

وَكَأَیِّن مِّن نَّبِیࣲّ قَـٰتَلَ مَعَهُۥ رِبِّیُّونَ كَثِیرࣱ فَمَا وَهَنُوا۟ لِمَاۤ أَصَابَهُمۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا ضَعُفُوا۟ وَمَا ٱسۡتَكَانُوا۟ۗ وَٱللَّهُ یُحِبُّ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٤٦

How many prophets, with them large numbers of devoted men, fought (in the cause of Allah)! They did not lose heart at what befell them in Allah´s way, nor did they weaken, nor did they demean themselves - Allah loves the steadfast

waka-ayyin min nabiyyin qātala maʿahu ribbiyyūna kathīrun famā wahanū limā aṣābahum fī sabīli l-lahi wamā ḍaʿufū wamā is'takānū wal-lahu yuḥibbu l-ṣābirīn

وَمَا كَانَ قَوۡلَهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسۡرَافَنَا فِیۤ أَمۡرِنَا وَثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٤٧

And their word was only to say, "Lord, forgive us our sins and wasted efforts; and make firm our footing, and help us against the faithless folk!"

wamā kāna qawlahum illā an qālū rabbanā igh'fir lanā dhunūbanā wa-is'rāfanā fī amrinā wathabbit aqdāmanā wa-unṣur'nā ʿalā l-qawmi l-kāfirīn

فَءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ثَوَابَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَحُسۡنَ ثَوَابِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۗ وَٱللَّهُ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٤٨

So Allah gave them the reward of this world, and also good reward in the Hereafter. Allah does love those whose deeds are good

faātāhumu l-lahu thawāba l-dun'yā waḥus'na thawābi l-ākhirati wal-lahu yuḥibbu l-muḥ'sinīn

16 Causes of Misfortune in Uhud Battle

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِن تُطِیعُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یَرُدُّوكُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَعۡقَـٰبِكُمۡ فَتَنقَلِبُوا۟ خَـٰسِرِینَ ۝١٤٩

O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back upon your heels, and you will retreat as losers

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū in tuṭīʿū alladhīna kafarū yaruddūkum ʿalā aʿqābikum fatanqalibū khāsirīn

بَلِ ٱللَّهُ مَوۡلَىٰكُمۡۖ وَهُوَ خَیۡرُ ٱلنَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝١٥٠

Nay, Allah is your Protector; He is the best of helpers

bali l-lahu mawlākum wahuwa khayru l-nāṣirīn

سَنُلۡقِی فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلرُّعۡبَ بِمَاۤ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمۡ یُنَزِّلۡ بِهِۦ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰاۖ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُۖ وَبِئۡسَ مَثۡوَى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٥١

We will throw dread into the heart of those who disbelieve, for that they associate partners unto Allah, for which He has revealed no authority; but their resort is fire, and evil is the resort of the wrong-doers

sanul'qī fī qulūbi alladhīna kafarū l-ruʿ'ba bimā ashrakū bil-lahi mā lam yunazzil bihi sul'ṭānan wamawāhumu l-nāru wabi'sa mathwā l-ẓālimīn

وَلَقَدۡ صَدَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَعۡدَهُۥۤ إِذۡ تَحُسُّونَهُم بِإِذۡنِهِۦۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا فَشِلۡتُمۡ وَتَنَـٰزَعۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَمۡرِ وَعَصَیۡتُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ مَاۤ أَرَىٰكُم مَّا تُحِبُّونَۚ مِنكُم مَّن یُرِیدُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَمِنكُم مَّن یُرِیدُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَۚ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمۡ عَنۡهُمۡ لِیَبۡتَلِیَكُمۡۖ وَلَقَدۡ عَفَا عَنكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو فَضۡلٍ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٢

Allah has truly kept His promise, when you routed them by His permission, until you showed cowardice, and wrangled, and rebelled, after He had shown you what you loved (booty). Amongst you are those who love this world, and amongst you are those who love

walaqad ṣadaqakumu l-lahu waʿdahu idh taḥussūnahum bi-idh'nihi ḥattā idhā fashil'tum watanāzaʿtum fī l-amri waʿaṣaytum min baʿdi mā arākum mā tuḥibbūna minkum man yurīdu l-dun'yā waminkum man yurīdu l-ākhirata thumma ṣarafakum ʿanhum liyabtaliyakum walaqad ʿafā ʿankum wal-lahu dhū faḍlin ʿalā l-mu'minīn

۞ إِذۡ تُصۡعِدُونَ وَلَا تَلۡوُۥنَ عَلَىٰۤ أَحَدࣲ وَٱلرَّسُولُ یَدۡعُوكُمۡ فِیۤ أُخۡرَىٰكُمۡ فَأَثَـٰبَكُمۡ غَمَّۢا بِغَمࣲّ لِّكَیۡلَا تَحۡزَنُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَاتَكُمۡ وَلَا مَاۤ أَصَـٰبَكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٥٣

And when you climbed (the hill) and looked not round upon any one, although the Messenger was calling you from your rear. Therefore did Allah reward you with trouble on trouble that you should not grieve after what you had missed, nor for what befell you

idh tuṣ'ʿidūna walā talwūna ʿalā aḥadin wal-rasūlu yadʿūkum fī ukh'rākum fa-athābakum ghamman bighammin likaylā taḥzanū ʿalā mā fātakum walā mā aṣābakum wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ عَلَیۡكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱلۡغَمِّ أَمَنَةࣰ نُّعَاسࣰا یَغۡشَىٰ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣰ مِّنكُمۡۖ وَطَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ قَدۡ أَهَمَّتۡهُمۡ أَنفُسُهُمۡ یَظُنُّونَ بِٱللَّهِ غَیۡرَ ٱلۡحَقِّ ظَنَّ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِیَّةِۖ یَقُولُونَ هَل لَّنَا مِنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ مِن شَیۡءࣲۗ قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَمۡرَ كُلَّهُۥ لِلَّهِۗ یُخۡفُونَ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِم مَّا لَا یُبۡدُونَ لَكَۖ یَقُولُونَ لَوۡ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ شَیۡءࣱ مَّا قُتِلۡنَا هَـٰهُنَاۗ قُل لَّوۡ كُنتُمۡ فِی بُیُوتِكُمۡ لَبَرَزَ ٱلَّذِینَ كُتِبَ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡقَتۡلُ إِلَىٰ مَضَاجِعِهِمۡۖ وَلِیَبۡتَلِیَ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِی صُدُورِكُمۡ وَلِیُمَحِّصَ مَا فِی قُلُوبِكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝١٥٤

Then, after grief, He sent down upon you security, as drowsiness crept over one company of you, while another company became anxious about themselves, wrongly suspicious of Allah, with the suspicion of ignorance, and saying, "Have we any part (or ch

thumma anzala ʿalaykum min baʿdi l-ghami amanatan nuʿāsan yaghshā ṭāifatan minkum waṭāifatun qad ahammathum anfusuhum yaẓunnūna bil-lahi ghayra l-ḥaqi ẓanna l-jāhiliyati yaqūlūna hal lanā mina l-amri min shayin qul inna l-amra kullahu lillahi yukh'fūna fī anfusihim mā lā yub'dūna laka yaqūlūna law kāna lanā mina l-amri shayon mā qutil'nā hāhunā qul law kuntum fī buyūtikum labaraza alladhīna kutiba ʿalayhimu l-qatlu ilā maḍājiʿihim waliyabtaliya l-lahu mā fī ṣudūrikum waliyumaḥḥiṣa mā fī qulūbikum wal-lahu ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ تَوَلَّوۡا۟ مِنكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ إِنَّمَا ٱسۡتَزَلَّهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ بِبَعۡضِ مَا كَسَبُوا۟ۖ وَلَقَدۡ عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِیمࣱ ۝١٥٥

Verily, those of you who turned your backs on that day when the two armies met, it was but Satan who made them slip because of something they had earned. But Allah has now pardoned them; verily, Allah is Forgiving and Clement

inna alladhīna tawallaw minkum yawma l-taqā l-jamʿāni innamā is'tazallahumu l-shayṭānu bibaʿḍi mā kasabū walaqad ʿafā l-lahu ʿanhum inna l-laha ghafūrun ḥalīmu

17 Uhud made a distinction

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَقَالُوا۟ لِإِخۡوَ ٰنِهِمۡ إِذَا ضَرَبُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَوۡ كَانُوا۟ غُزࣰّى لَّوۡ كَانُوا۟ عِندَنَا مَا مَاتُوا۟ وَمَا قُتِلُوا۟ لِیَجۡعَلَ ٱللَّهُ ذَ ٰلِكَ حَسۡرَةࣰ فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِیرࣱ ۝١٥٦

O you who believe! Be not like those who disbelieve, and say unto their brethren who went about in the earth, or are fighting in the field, "Had they but been with us, they would not have died or been killed." That Allah might make it a cause f

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā takūnū ka-alladhīna kafarū waqālū li-ikh'wānihim idhā ḍarabū fī l-arḍi aw kānū ghuzzan law kānū ʿindanā mā mātū wamā qutilū liyajʿala l-lahu dhālika ḥasratan fī qulūbihim wal-lahu yuḥ'yī wayumītu wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna baṣīru

وَلَىِٕن قُتِلۡتُمۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡ مُتُّمۡ لَمَغۡفِرَةࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَحۡمَةٌ خَیۡرࣱ مِّمَّا یَجۡمَعُونَ ۝١٥٧

And if, indeed, you be killed in Allah´s way or die therein, surely forgiveness from Allah and mercy is better than what you gather

wala-in qutil'tum fī sabīli l-lahi aw muttum lamaghfiratun mina l-lahi waraḥmatun khayrun mimmā yajmaʿūn

وَلَىِٕن مُّتُّمۡ أَوۡ قُتِلۡتُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ ۝١٥٨

And if you die or be killed it is to Allah that you shall be assembled

wala-in muttum aw qutil'tum la-ilā l-lahi tuḥ'sharūn

فَبِمَا رَحۡمَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمۡۖ وَلَوۡ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِیظَ ٱلۡقَلۡبِ لَٱنفَضُّوا۟ مِنۡ حَوۡلِكَۖ فَٱعۡفُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُمۡ وَشَاوِرۡهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَمۡرِۖ فَإِذَا عَزَمۡتَ فَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَوَكِّلِینَ ۝١٥٩

It was by the mercy of Allah that you did deal gently with them (O Muhammad), for had you been rough and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from around you. But pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult with them on the conduct of aff

fabimā raḥmatin mina l-lahi linta lahum walaw kunta faẓẓan ghalīẓa l-qalbi la-infaḍḍū min ḥawlika fa-uʿ'fu ʿanhum wa-is'taghfir lahum washāwir'hum fī l-amri fa-idhā ʿazamta fatawakkal ʿalā l-lahi inna l-laha yuḥibbu l-mutawakilīn

إِن یَنصُرۡكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَلَا غَالِبَ لَكُمۡۖ وَإِن یَخۡذُلۡكُمۡ فَمَن ذَا ٱلَّذِی یَنصُرُكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦۗ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٦٠

If Allah help you, there is none that can overcome you; but if He withdraws his help, who is there that can help you? Upon Allah then let believers rely

in yanṣur'kumu l-lahu falā ghāliba lakum wa-in yakhdhul'kum faman dhā alladhī yanṣurukum min baʿdihi waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِیٍّ أَن یَغُلَّۚ وَمَن یَغۡلُلۡ یَأۡتِ بِمَا غَلَّ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ مَّا كَسَبَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝١٦١

It is not for the Prophet to deceive; and he who deceives shall bring his deceit with him on the Day of Resurrection. Then shall each soul be paid what it has earned, and they shall not be wronged

wamā kāna linabiyyin an yaghulla waman yaghlul yati bimā ghalla yawma l-qiyāmati thumma tuwaffā kullu nafsin mā kasabat wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

أَفَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ رِضۡوَ ٰنَ ٱللَّهِ كَمَنۢ بَاۤءَ بِسَخَطࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝١٦٢

Is he who follows the pleasure of Allah, like him who has drawn on himself anger from Allah, whose resort is the Fire? An evil journey´s end

afamani ittabaʿa riḍ'wāna l-lahi kaman bāa bisakhaṭin mina l-lahi wamawāhu jahannamu wabi'sa l-maṣīr

هُمۡ دَرَجَـٰتٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِیرُۢ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٣

There are degrees with Allah, and Allah sees what you do

hum darajātun ʿinda l-lahi wal-lahu baṣīrun bimā yaʿmalūn

لَقَدۡ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ إِذۡ بَعَثَ فِیهِمۡ رَسُولࣰا مِّنۡ أَنفُسِهِمۡ یَتۡلُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ وَیُزَكِّیهِمۡ وَیُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَإِن كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلُ لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝١٦٤

Allah was surely very gracious to the believers, when He sent amongst them a Messenger from among themselves (or of their own), who recite to them His revelations, and causes them to grow (or be purified), and teaches them the Scripture and wisdom, altho

laqad manna l-lahu ʿalā l-mu'minīna idh baʿatha fīhim rasūlan min anfusihim yatlū ʿalayhim āyātihi wayuzakkīhim wayuʿallimuhumu l-kitāba wal-ḥik'mata wa-in kānū min qablu lafī ḍalālin mubīni

أَوَ لَمَّاۤ أَصَـٰبَتۡكُم مُّصِیبَةࣱ قَدۡ أَصَبۡتُم مِّثۡلَیۡهَا قُلۡتُمۡ أَنَّىٰ هَـٰذَاۖ قُلۡ هُوَ مِنۡ عِندِ أَنفُسِكُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝١٦٥

What! When a small disaster befalls you, though you have smitten them with twice as much, do you say, "How is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves. Verily, Allah has Power over all things."

awalammā aṣābatkum muṣībatun qad aṣabtum mith'layhā qul'tum annā hādhā qul huwa min ʿindi anfusikum inna l-laha ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

وَمَاۤ أَصَـٰبَكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ فَبِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِیَعۡلَمَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٦٦

And what befell you the day when the two armies met, it was by Allah´s permission; that He might know the true believers

wamā aṣābakum yawma l-taqā l-jamʿāni fabi-idh'ni l-lahi waliyaʿlama l-mu'minīn

وَلِیَعۡلَمَ ٱلَّذِینَ نَافَقُوا۟ۚ وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ قَـٰتِلُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوِ ٱدۡفَعُوا۟ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَوۡ نَعۡلَمُ قِتَالࣰا لَّٱتَّبَعۡنَـٰكُمۡۗ هُمۡ لِلۡكُفۡرِ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ أَقۡرَبُ مِنۡهُمۡ لِلۡإِیمَـٰنِۚ یَقُولُونَ بِأَفۡوَ ٰهِهِم مَّا لَیۡسَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا یَكۡتُمُونَ ۝١٦٧

And He might know those who are hypocrites; for it was said to them, "Come, fight in Allah´s way," or "Repel (the foe)" But they said, "If we knew how to fight we would surely follow you." They were that day far nearer

waliyaʿlama alladhīna nāfaqū waqīla lahum taʿālaw qātilū fī sabīli l-lahi awi id'faʿū qālū law naʿlamu qitālan la-ittabaʿnākum hum lil'kuf'ri yawma-idhin aqrabu min'hum lil'īmāni yaqūlūna bi-afwāhihim mā laysa fī qulūbihim wal-lahu aʿlamu bimā yaktumūn

ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوا۟ لِإِخۡوَ ٰنِهِمۡ وَقَعَدُوا۟ لَوۡ أَطَاعُونَا مَا قُتِلُوا۟ۗ قُلۡ فَٱدۡرَءُوا۟ عَنۡ أَنفُسِكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٦٨

Those who said of their brethren, whilst they themselves stayed at home, "Had they been guided by us they would not have been killed." Say (unto them), "Then repel from yourselves death, if you are truthful."

alladhīna qālū li-ikh'wānihim waqaʿadū law aṭāʿūnā mā qutilū qul fa-id'raū ʿan anfusikumu l-mawta in kuntum ṣādiqīn

وَلَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ قُتِلُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ أَمۡوَ ٰتَۢاۚ بَلۡ أَحۡیَاۤءٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ یُرۡزَقُونَ ۝١٦٩

Think not those who are slain in the way of Allah as dead. Nay, they are living; with their Lord they have sustenance

walā taḥsabanna alladhīna qutilū fī sabīli l-lahi amwātan bal aḥyāon ʿinda rabbihim yur'zaqūn

فَرِحِینَ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَیَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ بِٱلَّذِینَ لَمۡ یَلۡحَقُوا۟ بِهِم مِّنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ أَلَّا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یَحۡزَنُونَ ۝١٧٠

Rejoicing in what Allah has brought them of His Bounty, glad for those who have not reached them yet, those left behind; there is no fear for them, and they shall not grieve

fariḥīna bimā ātāhumu l-lahu min faḍlihi wayastabshirūna bi-alladhīna lam yalḥaqū bihim min khalfihim allā khawfun ʿalayhim walā hum yaḥzanūn

۞ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ بِنِعۡمَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَفَضۡلࣲ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُضِیعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧١

They rejoice at the favour from Allah and grace, and that Allah wastes not the wages of the believers

yastabshirūna biniʿ'matin mina l-lahi wafaḍlin wa-anna l-laha lā yuḍīʿu ajra l-mu'minīn

18 No Gain to Enemy

ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَجَابُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَاۤ أَصَابَهُمُ ٱلۡقَرۡحُۚ لِلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ وَٱتَّقَوۡا۟ أَجۡرٌ عَظِیمٌ ۝١٧٢

Whoever answered to the call of Allah and of His Prophet after sorrow had befallen them, for those, if they do good and fear evil, there is a great reward

alladhīna is'tajābū lillahi wal-rasūli min baʿdi mā aṣābahumu l-qarḥu lilladhīna aḥsanū min'hum wa-ittaqaw ajrun ʿaẓīmu

ٱلَّذِینَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدۡ جَمَعُوا۟ لَكُمۡ فَٱخۡشَوۡهُمۡ فَزَادَهُمۡ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَقَالُوا۟ حَسۡبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡوَكِیلُ ۝١٧٣

Those unto whom men said, "Verily, men have gathered against you, therefore, fear them," but it only increased their faith, and they say, "Allah is enough for us. He is the Most Excellent Disposer of affairs."

alladhīna qāla lahumu l-nāsu inna l-nāsa qad jamaʿū lakum fa-ikh'shawhum fazādahum īmānan waqālū ḥasbunā l-lahu waniʿ'ma l-wakīl

فَٱنقَلَبُوا۟ بِنِعۡمَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَفَضۡلࣲ لَّمۡ یَمۡسَسۡهُمۡ سُوۤءࣱ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ رِضۡوَ ٰنَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو فَضۡلٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٧٤

Then they returned with the favour and grace from Allah; no evil touched them; for they followed the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is Lord of infinite Bounty

fa-inqalabū biniʿ'matin mina l-lahi wafaḍlin lam yamsashum sūon wa-ittabaʿū riḍ'wāna l-lahi wal-lahu dhū faḍlin ʿaẓīmi

إِنَّمَا ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ یُخَوِّفُ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَهُۥ فَلَا تَخَافُوهُمۡ وَخَافُونِ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٥

It is only Satan who frightens his friends. Fear them not, but fear Me, if you be true believers

innamā dhālikumu l-shayṭānu yukhawwifu awliyāahu falā takhāfūhum wakhāfūni in kuntum mu'minīn

وَلَا یَحۡزُنكَ ٱلَّذِینَ یُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِی ٱلۡكُفۡرِۚ إِنَّهُمۡ لَن یَضُرُّوا۟ ٱللَّهَ شَیۡءࣰاۗ یُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ أَلَّا یَجۡعَلَ لَهُمۡ حَظࣰّا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمٌ ۝١٧٦

Let not their conduct grieve you, those who vie with each other in disbelief. Verily, they cannot hurt Allah at all. Allah wills not to give them a portion in the Hereafter; but for them is an awful doom

walā yaḥzunka alladhīna yusāriʿūna fī l-kuf'ri innahum lan yaḍurrū l-laha shayan yurīdu l-lahu allā yajʿala lahum ḥaẓẓan fī l-ākhirati walahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱشۡتَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡكُفۡرَ بِٱلۡإِیمَـٰنِ لَن یَضُرُّوا۟ ٱللَّهَ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝١٧٧

Verily, those who purchase disbelief for faith, they do not hurt Allah at all, and for them is grievous woe

inna alladhīna ish'tarawū l-kuf'ra bil-īmāni lan yaḍurrū l-laha shayan walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَلَا یَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَنَّمَا نُمۡلِی لَهُمۡ خَیۡرࣱ لِّأَنفُسِهِمۡۚ إِنَّمَا نُمۡلِی لَهُمۡ لِیَزۡدَادُوۤا۟ إِثۡمࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝١٧٨

Let not those who disbelieve imagine that the respite they have is good for themselves. We only let them have their rein that they may increase in sin. And for them is shameful woe

walā yaḥsabanna alladhīna kafarū annamā num'lī lahum khayrun li-anfusihim innamā num'lī lahum liyazdādū ith'man walahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

مَّا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیَذَرَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ عَلَىٰ مَاۤ أَنتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ حَتَّىٰ یَمِیزَ ٱلۡخَبِیثَ مِنَ ٱلطَّیِّبِۗ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیُطۡلِعَكُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَجۡتَبِی مِن رُّسُلِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُۖ فَءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦۚ وَإِن تُؤۡمِنُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ فَلَكُمۡ أَجۡرٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٧٩

Allah will not leave the faithful in your present state until He separates the vile from the good. And Allah will not inform you of the unseen, but Allah chooses of His Apostles whom He pleases. So believe you in Allah and His Messenger; and if you belie

mā kāna l-lahu liyadhara l-mu'minīna ʿalā mā antum ʿalayhi ḥattā yamīza l-khabītha mina l-ṭayibi wamā kāna l-lahu liyuṭ'liʿakum ʿalā l-ghaybi walākinna l-laha yajtabī min rusulihi man yashāu faāminū bil-lahi warusulihi wa-in tu'minū watattaqū falakum ajrun ʿaẓīmu

وَلَا یَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَبۡخَلُونَ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ هُوَ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۖ بَلۡ هُوَ شَرࣱّ لَّهُمۡۖ سَیُطَوَّقُونَ مَا بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ وَلِلَّهِ مِیرَ ٰثُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝١٨٠

And let not those who hoard what Allah has given them of His Bounty think that it is best for them; nay, it is worse for them. What they hoard will be a collar round their necks on the Day of Resurrection. Allah´s is the heritage of the heavens and

walā yaḥsabanna alladhīna yabkhalūna bimā ātāhumu l-lahu min faḍlihi huwa khayran lahum bal huwa sharrun lahum sayuṭawwaqūna mā bakhilū bihi yawma l-qiyāmati walillahi mīrāthu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

19 Carpings of People of Book

لَّقَدۡ سَمِعَ ٱللَّهُ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ فَقِیرࣱ وَنَحۡنُ أَغۡنِیَاۤءُۘ سَنَكۡتُبُ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَقَتۡلَهُمُ ٱلۡأَنۢبِیَاۤءَ بِغَیۡرِ حَقࣲّ وَنَقُولُ ذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابَ ٱلۡحَرِیقِ ۝١٨١

Verily Allah heard the speech of those who said, "Verily, Allah is poor and we are rich." We will write down what they said, and how they killed the prophets undeservedly and say, "Taste you the torment of burning;"

laqad samiʿa l-lahu qawla alladhīna qālū inna l-laha faqīrun wanaḥnu aghniyāu sanaktubu mā qālū waqatlahumu l-anbiyāa bighayri ḥaqqin wanaqūlu dhūqū ʿadhāba l-ḥarīq

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَیۡدِیكُمۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَیۡسَ بِظَلَّامࣲ لِّلۡعَبِیدِ ۝١٨٢

This shall they suffer for what their hands have sent on before: - for verily, Allah is no oppressor to His servants

dhālika bimā qaddamat aydīkum wa-anna l-laha laysa biẓallāmin lil'ʿabīd

ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَهِدَ إِلَیۡنَاۤ أَلَّا نُؤۡمِنَ لِرَسُولٍ حَتَّىٰ یَأۡتِیَنَا بِقُرۡبَانࣲ تَأۡكُلُهُ ٱلنَّارُۗ قُلۡ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمۡ رُسُلࣱ مِّن قَبۡلِی بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَبِٱلَّذِی قُلۡتُمۡ فَلِمَ قَتَلۡتُمُوهُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٣

Who say, "Verily, Allah has covenanted with us that we should not believe in a Messenger until he brings us a sacrifice which fire devours." Say, "There have come to you Messengers before me with manifest signs, and with the very thing you

alladhīna qālū inna l-laha ʿahida ilaynā allā nu'mina lirasūlin ḥattā yatiyanā biqur'bānin takuluhu l-nāru qul qad jāakum rusulun min qablī bil-bayināti wabi-alladhī qul'tum falima qataltumūhum in kuntum ṣādiqīn

فَإِن كَذَّبُوكَ فَقَدۡ كُذِّبَ رُسُلࣱ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ جَاۤءُو بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَٱلزُّبُرِ وَٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُنِیرِ ۝١٨٤

And if they deny you, even so did they deny Messengers before you, who came with manifest signs, and with the Psalms, and with the illuminating Scriptures

fa-in kadhabūka faqad kudhiba rusulun min qablika jāū bil-bayināti wal-zuburi wal-kitābi l-munīr

كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ ذَاۤىِٕقَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوۡنَ أُجُورَكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۖ فَمَن زُحۡزِحَ عَنِ ٱلنَّارِ وَأُدۡخِلَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ فَقَدۡ فَازَۗ وَمَا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۤ إِلَّا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡغُرُورِ ۝١٨٥

Every soul must taste of death; and you shall only be paid what you have earned on the Day of Resurrection. But he who is forced away from the Fire and brought into Paradise is indeed triumphant; but the life of this world is but a possession of illusion

kullu nafsin dhāiqatu l-mawti wa-innamā tuwaffawna ujūrakum yawma l-qiyāmati faman zuḥ'ziḥa ʿani l-nāri wa-ud'khila l-janata faqad fāza wamā l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā illā matāʿu l-ghurūr

۞ لَتُبۡلَوُنَّ فِیۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَأَنفُسِكُمۡ وَلَتَسۡمَعُنَّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوۤا۟ أَذࣰى كَثِیرࣰاۚ وَإِن تَصۡبِرُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عَزۡمِ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ۝١٨٦

You shall surely be tried in your wealth, and in your persons, and you shall surely hear much wrong from those who have had the Scripture before you, and from the idolaters. But if you be patient and fear evil, verily, that is the determining heart of af

latub'lawunna fī amwālikum wa-anfusikum walatasmaʿunna mina alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba min qablikum wamina alladhīna ashrakū adhan kathīran wa-in taṣbirū watattaqū fa-inna dhālika min ʿazmi l-umūr

وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِیثَـٰقَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ لَتُبَیِّنُنَّهُۥ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَكۡتُمُونَهُۥ فَنَبَذُوهُ وَرَاۤءَ ظُهُورِهِمۡ وَٱشۡتَرَوۡا۟ بِهِۦ ثَمَنࣰا قَلِیلࣰاۖ فَبِئۡسَ مَا یَشۡتَرُونَ ۝١٨٧

When Allah took the covenant from those who have received the Scripture, (and said), "You shall of a surety manifest it unto men, and not hide it", they cast it behind their backs, and bought therewith a little gain, but evil is what they buy t

wa-idh akhadha l-lahu mīthāqa alladhīna ūtū l-kitāba latubayyinunnahu lilnnāsi walā taktumūnahu fanabadhūhu warāa ẓuhūrihim wa-ish'taraw bihi thamanan qalīlan fabi'sa mā yashtarūn

لَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَفۡرَحُونَ بِمَاۤ أَتَوا۟ وَّیُحِبُّونَ أَن یُحۡمَدُوا۟ بِمَا لَمۡ یَفۡعَلُوا۟ فَلَا تَحۡسَبَنَّهُم بِمَفَازَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝١٨٨

Think not that those who rejoice in what they have given, and love to be praised for what they have not done, - think not that they are in safety from woe - for them is painful woe

lā taḥsabanna alladhīna yafraḥūna bimā ataw wayuḥibbūna an yuḥ'madū bimā lam yafʿalū falā taḥsabannahum bimafāzatin mina l-ʿadhābi walahum ʿadhābun alīmu

وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرٌ ۝١٨٩

Allah´s is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Mighty over all things

walillahi mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

20 Ultimate Triumph of Faithful

إِنَّ فِی خَلۡقِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ ۝١٩٠

Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the succession of night and day, are signs for those who possess understanding

inna fī khalqi l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa-ikh'tilāfi al-layli wal-nahāri laāyātin li-ulī l-albāb

ٱلَّذِینَ یَذۡكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ قِیَـٰمࣰا وَقُعُودࣰا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمۡ وَیَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِی خَلۡقِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقۡتَ هَـٰذَا بَـٰطِلࣰا سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ ۝١٩١

Such as remember Allah standing and sitting or reclining, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say) "O Lord! Thou hast not created this in vain. Glory be to Thee; preserve us from the torment of the fire

alladhīna yadhkurūna l-laha qiyāman waquʿūdan waʿalā junūbihim wayatafakkarūna fī khalqi l-samāwāti wal-arḍi rabbanā mā khalaqta hādhā bāṭilan sub'ḥānaka faqinā ʿadhāba l-nār

رَبَّنَاۤ إِنَّكَ مَن تُدۡخِلِ ٱلنَّارَ فَقَدۡ أَخۡزَیۡتَهُۥۖ وَمَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِینَ مِنۡ أَنصَارࣲ ۝١٩٢

"Our Lord! Verily, whomsoever Thou hast made to enter the fire, him, indeed, Thou hast disgraced; and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers

rabbanā innaka man tud'khili l-nāra faqad akhzaytahu wamā lilẓẓālimīna min anṣāri

رَّبَّنَاۤ إِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِیࣰا یُنَادِی لِلۡإِیمَـٰنِ أَنۡ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَءَامَنَّاۚ رَبَّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرۡ عَنَّا سَیِّءَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ ۝١٩٣

"Our Lord! Verily, we heard a crier calling to the faith, ´Believe you in your Lord,´ and we did believe. Lord! Therefore, forgive us our sins and remit from us our offences, and let us die the death of the righteous

rabbanā innanā samiʿ'nā munādiyan yunādī lil'īmāni an āminū birabbikum faāmannā rabbanā fa-igh'fir lanā dhunūbanā wakaffir ʿannā sayyiātinā watawaffanā maʿa l-abrār

رَبَّنَا وَءَاتِنَا مَا وَعَدتَّنَا عَلَىٰ رُسُلِكَ وَلَا تُخۡزِنَا یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۖ إِنَّكَ لَا تُخۡلِفُ ٱلۡمِیعَادَ ۝١٩٤

"Our Lord! Bring us what Thou hast promised us by Thy Messengers, and disgrace us not upon the Day of Resurrection; for, verily, Thou dost not break Thy promises!"

rabbanā waātinā mā waʿadttanā ʿalā rusulika walā tukh'zinā yawma l-qiyāmati innaka lā tukh'lifu l-mīʿād

فَٱسۡتَجَابَ لَهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ أَنِّی لَاۤ أُضِیعُ عَمَلَ عَـٰمِلࣲ مِّنكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰۖ بَعۡضُكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡضࣲۖ فَٱلَّذِینَ هَاجَرُوا۟ وَأُخۡرِجُوا۟ مِن دِیَـٰرِهِمۡ وَأُوذُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِی وَقَـٰتَلُوا۟ وَقُتِلُوا۟ لَأُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنۡهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتِهِمۡ وَلَأُدۡخِلَنَّهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ ثَوَابࣰا مِّنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَٱللَّهُ عِندَهُۥ حُسۡنُ ٱلثَّوَابِ ۝١٩٥

And the Lord shall answer them, "I waste not the works of a worker amongst you, be it male or female, - you proceed one from the other. So those who fled, and were turned out of their houses, and were harmed in My cause, and who fought and were kill

fa-is'tajāba lahum rabbuhum annī lā uḍīʿu ʿamala ʿāmilin minkum min dhakarin aw unthā baʿḍukum min baʿḍin fa-alladhīna hājarū wa-ukh'rijū min diyārihim waūdhū fī sabīlī waqātalū waqutilū la-ukaffiranna ʿanhum sayyiātihim wala-ud'khilannahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru thawāban min ʿindi l-lahi wal-lahu ʿindahu ḥus'nu l-thawāb

لَا یَغُرَّنَّكَ تَقَلُّبُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ ۝١٩٦

Let not the vicissitudes of the faithless deceive you

lā yaghurrannaka taqallubu alladhīna kafarū fī l-bilād

مَتَـٰعࣱ قَلِیلࣱ ثُمَّ مَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمِهَادُ ۝١٩٧

It is but a brief comfort, and then their resort is Hell; an evil couch shall it be

matāʿun qalīlun thumma mawāhum jahannamu wabi'sa l-mihād

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ رَبَّهُمۡ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣱ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا نُزُلࣰا مِّنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۗ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلۡأَبۡرَارِ ۝١٩٨

But those who keep their duty to their Lord, for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow, and they shall dwell therein for ever - a welcoming gift from Allah. That which Allah has is best for the righteous

lākini alladhīna ittaqaw rabbahum lahum jannātun tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā nuzulan min ʿindi l-lahi wamā ʿinda l-lahi khayrun lil'abrār

وَإِنَّ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَمَن یُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ خَـٰشِعِینَ لِلَّهِ لَا یَشۡتَرُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنࣰا قَلِیلًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِیعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ۝١٩٩

Verily, of the people of the Book are some who do believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to you, and what was revealed to them, humbling themselves before Allah. They purchase not a small gain for the revelations of Allah. These shall have their

wa-inna min ahli l-kitābi laman yu'minu bil-lahi wamā unzila ilaykum wamā unzila ilayhim khāshiʿīna lillahi lā yashtarūna biāyāti l-lahi thamanan qalīlan ulāika lahum ajruhum ʿinda rabbihim inna l-laha sarīʿu l-ḥisāb

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱصۡبِرُوا۟ وَصَابِرُوا۟ وَرَابِطُوا۟ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٢٠٠

O you who believe! Endure and vie with one another in endurance, and be on the alert, and fear Allah, in order that you may succeed

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū iṣ'birū waṣābirū warābiṭū wa-ittaqū l-laha laʿallakum tuf'liḥūn
