1 Certainty of the Punishment
70:1 ›
سَأَلَ سَاۤىِٕلُۢ بِعَذَابࣲ وَاقِعࣲ ۝١
Amatul Rahman Omar
A solicitor solicited the punishment which is bound to befall
sa-ala sāilun biʿadhābin wāqiʿi
70:2 ›
لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعࣱ ۝٢
Amatul Rahman Omar
(Let him know) there will be none to ward it off from the disbelievers
lil'kāfirīna laysa lahu dāfiʿu
70:3 ›
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِی ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ ۝٣
Amatul Rahman Omar
(It shall come) from Allah the Master of the ways of ascent; (which even enable a person to rise higher and higher, so why not solicit His grace?
mina l-lahi dhī l-maʿārij
70:4 ›
تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَیۡهِ فِی یَوۡمࣲ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِینَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةࣲ ۝٤
Amatul Rahman Omar
The angels and the Spirit (of the faithful) ascend to Him in a day the measure of which is (equal to) fifty thousand years (a day of spiritual advancement of the faithful is equivalent to fifty thousand years of material advancement, thus the development and progress of the human soul knows no end)
taʿruju l-malāikatu wal-rūḥu ilayhi fī yawmin kāna miq'dāruhu khamsīna alfa sanati
70:5 ›
فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرࣰا جَمِیلًا ۝٥

So (while waiting) patiently persevere, an admirable and graceful persevering
fa-iṣ'bir ṣabran jamīla
70:6 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ یَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِیدࣰا ۝٦
Amatul Rahman Omar
They think it (- the Day of Judgment) to be far off
innahum yarawnahu baʿīda
70:7 ›
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِیبࣰا ۝٧
Amatul Rahman Omar
But We know it to be near (at hand)
wanarāhu qarība
70:8 ›
یَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ ۝٨
Amatul Rahman Omar
The day (it befalls), the heaven shall become (red) like molten copper
yawma takūnu l-samāu kal-muh'l
70:9 ›
وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ ۝٩
Amatul Rahman Omar
And the mountains shall become like flakes of multicoloured wool
watakūnu l-jibālu kal-ʿih'n
70:10 ›
وَلَا یَسۡءَلُ حَمِیمٌ حَمِیمࣰا ۝١٠
Amatul Rahman Omar
No warm friend will inquire after a warm friend
walā yasalu ḥamīmun ḥamīma
70:11 ›
یُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ یَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ یَفۡتَدِی مِنۡ عَذَابِ یَوۡمِىِٕذِۭ بِبَنِیهِ ۝١١
Amatul Rahman Omar
(Though) they will be placed in sight of one another. The guilty person would wish to redeem himself from the punishment of that day (even) by (offering) his children (as ransom)
yubaṣṣarūnahum yawaddu l-muj'rimu law yaftadī min ʿadhābi yawmi-idhin bibanīh
70:12 ›
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِیهِ ۝١٢
Amatul Rahman Omar
(The guilty will gladly sacrifice) his wife and his brother (to redeem himself)
waṣāḥibatihi wa-akhīh
70:13 ›
وَفَصِیلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِی تُءۡوِیهِ ۝١٣
Amatul Rahman Omar
And even his kinsfolk who gave him shelter (in time of distress
wafaṣīlatihi allatī tu'wīh
70:14 ›
وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا ثُمَّ یُنجِیهِ ۝١٤
Amatul Rahman Omar
And (by offering) all that is on the earth put together, (thinking) if only thus he might deliver himself (from the punishment)
waman fī l-arḍi jamīʿan thumma yunjīh
70:15 ›
كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ ۝١٥
Amatul Rahman Omar
By no means! (He can never be redeemed). Surely, it (- the punishment you are warned against) is a blazing Fire
kallā innahā laẓ
70:16 ›
نَزَّاعَةࣰ لِّلشَّوَىٰ ۝١٦
Amatul Rahman Omar
Stripping off the skin even to the extremities (of the human body)
nazzāʿatan lilshaw
70:17 ›
تَدۡعُوا۟ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ۝١٧
Amatul Rahman Omar
It will claim the person (for consumption) who drew back (from accepting the truth) and turned away (refusing to obey)
tadʿū man adbara watawall
70:18 ›
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰۤ ۝١٨
Amatul Rahman Omar
(It will claim) him who amassed (wealth) and withheld (it)
wajamaʿa fa-awʿ
70:19 ›
۞ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا ۝١٩
Amatul Rahman Omar
Verily, such a person is impatient and miserly by nature
inna l-insāna khuliqa halūʿa
70:20 ›
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعࣰا ۝٢٠
Amatul Rahman Omar
He loses heart and becomes fretful when evil afflicts him
idhā massahu l-sharu jazūʿa
70:21 ›
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَیۡرُ مَنُوعًا ۝٢١
Amatul Rahman Omar
But is niggardly when good falls to his lot
wa-idhā massahu l-khayru manūʿa
70:22 ›
إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٢٢
Amatul Rahman Omar
Different however is the case of those devoted to Prayers
illā l-muṣalīn
70:23 ›
ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝٢٣
Amatul Rahman Omar
Those persons who remain constant and steadfast in their Prayers
alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim dāimūn
70:24 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ فِیۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ حَقࣱّ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٢٤
Amatul Rahman Omar
And those in whose wealth there is a recognised right (- a fixed share)
wa-alladhīna fī amwālihim ḥaqqun maʿlūmu
70:25 ›
لِّلسَّاۤىِٕلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ ۝٢٥
Amatul Rahman Omar
(Set apart) for one who asks (for help) and also (for one) who is prevented (even from asking for one reason or the other)
lilssāili wal-maḥrūm
70:26 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ یُصَدِّقُونَ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٦
Amatul Rahman Omar
(Different also is the case of) those who accepted the truth of the Day of Requital
wa-alladhīna yuṣaddiqūna biyawmi l-dīn
70:27 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ ۝٢٧
Amatul Rahman Omar
And those who are fearful of the punishment from their Lord
wa-alladhīna hum min ʿadhābi rabbihim mush'fiqūn
70:28 ›
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَیۡرُ مَأۡمُونࣲ ۝٢٨
Amatul Rahman Omar
The fact is that the punishment of their Lord is not (a thing) to be felt secure from
inna ʿadhāba rabbihim ghayru mamūni
70:29 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَـٰفِظُونَ ۝٢٩
Amatul Rahman Omar
(Different as well is the case of) those who guard their private parts (by restraining their passions)
wa-alladhīna hum lifurūjihim ḥāfiẓūn
70:30 ›
إِلَّا عَلَىٰۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَیۡرُ مَلُومِینَ ۝٣٠
Amatul Rahman Omar
Except from their (free) wives or those (wives of theirs) whom their right hands own (- slave wives), for which they are not to blame
illā ʿalā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānuhum fa-innahum ghayru malūmīn
70:31 ›
فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَاۤءَ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ ۝٣١
Amatul Rahman Omar
But it is those who seek (to satisfy their lust) in any other way excepting that (of marriage) that are the transgressors
famani ib'taghā warāa dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-ʿādūn
70:32 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَ ٰعُونَ ۝٣٢
Amatul Rahman Omar
And (different also is the case of) those persons who are watchful of their trusts and their covenants
wa-alladhīna hum li-amānātihim waʿahdihim rāʿūn
70:33 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَ ٰتِهِمۡ قَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝٣٣
Amatul Rahman Omar
And those who are upright in their evidences (and bear true testimony)
wa-alladhīna hum bishahādātihim qāimūn
70:34 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ یُحَافِظُونَ ۝٣٤
Amatul Rahman Omar
And those persons who are strict in the observance of their Prayers
wa-alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim yuḥāfiẓūn
70:35 ›
أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٣٥
Amatul Rahman Omar
All these (mentioned above) shall be dwelling in Gardens, honoured and treated generously
ulāika fī jannātin muk'ramūn
2 A New Nation to be raised
70:36 ›
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِینَ ۝٣٦
Amatul Rahman Omar
What is wrong with those who disbelieve that they come running headlong towards you
famāli alladhīna kafarū qibalaka muh'ṭiʿīn
70:37 ›
عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِینَ ۝٣٧
Amatul Rahman Omar
From the right hand and from the left (- from all directions) in various parties
ayaṭmaʿu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yud'khala jannata naʿīmi
70:38 ›
أَیَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِیمࣲ ۝٣٨
Amatul Rahman Omar
Does each and every one of them covet to be admitted to the Garden of Bliss
AyatmaAAu kullu imri-in minhum an yudkhala jannata naAAeemin
70:39 ›
كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٩
Amatul Rahman Omar
No (never shall they enter it). We have created them for that substantial purpose (the worth of) which they know (- to discharge their obligations to God and mankind and to themselves)
kallā innā khalaqnāhum mimmā yaʿlamūn
70:40 ›
فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ ۝٤٠
Amatul Rahman Omar
But nay! I call to witness the Lord of the easts and the wests. We are certainly Powerfu
falā uq'simu birabbi l-mashāriqi wal-maghāribi innā laqādirūn
70:41 ›
عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَیۡرࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِینَ ۝٤١
Amatul Rahman Omar
To change (them into) better beings than they are and that We can never be frustrated (in Our purpose)
fadharhum yakhūḍū wayalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu alladhī yūʿadūn
70:42 ›
فَذَرۡهُمۡ یَخُوضُوا۟ وَیَلۡعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یُلَـٰقُوا۟ یَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یُوعَدُونَ ۝٤٢
Amatul Rahman Omar
Therefore, leave them alone to indulge in unimportant conversation and to amuse themselves (in idle pursuits) until they meet that day of theirs that they are warned of
Fatharhum yakhoodoo wayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allathee yooAAadoona
70:43 ›
یَوۡمَ یَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعࣰا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبࣲ یُوفِضُونَ ۝٤٣
Amatul Rahman Omar
The day when they (having risen to life) will come out hastily from their graves as though they were racing to a target (which they must meet)
yawma yakhrujūna mina l-ajdāthi sirāʿan ka-annahum ilā nuṣubin yūfiḍūn
70:44 ›
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡیَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِی كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٤٤
Amatul Rahman Omar
Their eyes will be downcast and shameful; humiliation will be overwhelming them. Such shall be the punishment of the day with which they are being threatened
khāshiʿatan abṣāruhum tarhaquhum dhillatun dhālika l-yawmu alladhī kānū yūʿadūn
