The Ascending Stairways, The Ladders — Dr Mohammad Tahir Ul Qadri Translation

70:1

سَأَلَ سَاۤىِٕلُۢ بِعَذَابࣲ وَاقِعࣲ ۝١

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

A questioner asked for the torment which is sure to come about

sa-ala sāilun biʿadhābin wāqiʿi

70:2

لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعࣱ ۝٢

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Upon the disbelievers, which no one can repel

lil'kāfirīna laysa lahu dāfiʿu

70:3

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِی ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ ۝٣

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

(That will befall) from Allah, Who is the Lord of the Ascending Steps to Heaven (and of the higher ranks and grades of spiritual hierarchy)

mina l-lahi dhī l-maʿārij

70:4

تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَیۡهِ فِی یَوۡمࣲ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِینَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةࣲ ۝٤

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

The angels and al-Ruh al-Amin (the Spirit) rise towards His (Throne) in a Day which measures fifty thousand years (according to the worldly scale).

taʿruju l-malāikatu wal-rūḥu ilayhi fī yawmin kāna miq'dāruhu khamsīna alfa sanati

70:5

فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرࣰا جَمِیلًا ۝٥

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

So, (O Beloved,) observe patience (on the assertions of the disbelievers) without regrets

fa-iṣ'bir ṣabran jamīla

70:6

إِنَّهُمۡ یَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِیدࣰا ۝٦

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Surely, they imagine that (Day) to be far off

innahum yarawnahu baʿīda

70:7

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِیبࣰا ۝٧

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

But We see it very near

wanarāhu qarība

70:8

یَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ ۝٨

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

On that Day the sky will become like molten copper

yawma takūnu l-samāu kal-muh'l

70:9

وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ ۝٩

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And the mountains like (flakes of) coloured wool

watakūnu l-jibālu kal-ʿih'n

70:10

وَلَا یَسۡءَلُ حَمِیمٌ حَمِیمࣰا ۝١٠

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And no friend will enquire after his friend

walā yasalu ḥamīmun ḥamīma

70:11

یُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ یَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ یَفۡتَدِی مِنۡ عَذَابِ یَوۡمِىِٕذِۭ بِبَنِیهِ ۝١١

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

(Though) they will be shown (to one another). The sinner would desire to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children

yubaṣṣarūnahum yawaddu l-muj'rimu law yaftadī min ʿadhābi yawmi-idhin bibanīh

70:12

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِیهِ ۝١٢

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And (by giving) his wife and his brother

waṣāḥibatihi wa-akhīh

70:13

وَفَصِیلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِی تُءۡوِیهِ ۝١٣

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And (all) his family who used to provide him shelter

wafaṣīlatihi allatī tu'wīh

70:14

وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا ثُمَّ یُنجِیهِ ۝١٤

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And all the people on earth (as recompense for himself), so that this (atonement) may save him from (Allah’s torment)

waman fī l-arḍi jamīʿan thumma yunjīh

70:15

كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ ۝١٥

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

But no! By no means! Surely, that is a Flaming Fire

kallā innahā laẓ

70:16

نَزَّاعَةࣰ لِّلشَّوَىٰ ۝١٦

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Stripping off the skin of all the limbs and the scalp

nazzāʿatan lilshaw

70:17

تَدۡعُوا۟ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ۝١٧

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

It is calling him who turned his back (on the truth) and turned away

tadʿū man adbara watawall

70:18

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰۤ ۝١٨

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And (he who) accumulated wealth and then held it (from distribution)

wajamaʿa fa-awʿ

70:19

۞ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا ۝١٩

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Surely, man has been created impatient and greedy

inna l-insāna khuliqa halūʿa

70:20

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعࣰا ۝٢٠

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

He gets upset and worried when some hardship (or financial loss) afflicts him

idhā massahu l-sharu jazūʿa

70:21

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَیۡرُ مَنُوعًا ۝٢١

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

But becomes miserly when he receives good fortune (or affluence)

wa-idhā massahu l-khayru manūʿa

70:22

إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٢٢

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Except for those who offer Prayer

illā l-muṣalīn

70:23

ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝٢٣

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And are constant in their Prayer

alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim dāimūn

70:24

وَٱلَّذِینَ فِیۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ حَقࣱّ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٢٤

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And those (who are committed to sacrifice and) in whose wealth there is a fixed share

wa-alladhīna fī amwālihim ḥaqqun maʿlūmu

70:25

لِّلسَّاۤىِٕلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ ۝٢٥

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Of one who begs and of one who is needy but does not beg

lilssāili wal-maḥrūm

70:26

وَٱلَّذِینَ یُصَدِّقُونَ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٦

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And those who affirm the Day of Requital

wa-alladhīna yuṣaddiqūna biyawmi l-dīn

70:27

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ ۝٢٧

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And those who fear the torment of their Lord

wa-alladhīna hum min ʿadhābi rabbihim mush'fiqūn

70:28

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَیۡرُ مَأۡمُونࣲ ۝٢٨

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Surely, the torment of their Lord is not a thing which should not be feared

inna ʿadhāba rabbihim ghayru mamūni

70:29

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَـٰفِظُونَ ۝٢٩

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And those who safeguard their private parts

wa-alladhīna hum lifurūjihim ḥāfiẓūn

70:30

إِلَّا عَلَىٰۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَیۡرُ مَلُومِینَ ۝٣٠

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Except from their wives or the female slaves they possess. So (in this) there is no blame on them

illā ʿalā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānuhum fa-innahum ghayru malūmīn

70:31

فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَاۤءَ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ ۝٣١

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

But he who looks for more than that, then it is they who transgress the limits

famani ib'taghā warāa dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-ʿādūn

70:32

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَ ٰعُونَ ۝٣٢

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And those who safeguard their trusts and promises

wa-alladhīna hum li-amānātihim waʿahdihim rāʿūn

70:33

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَ ٰتِهِمۡ قَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝٣٣

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And those who stand firm on their testimonies

wa-alladhīna hum bishahādātihim qāimūn

70:34

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ یُحَافِظُونَ ۝٣٤

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

And those who safeguard their Prayers

wa-alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim yuḥāfiẓūn

70:35

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٣٥

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

It is they who will enjoy great honour and respect in the Gardens

ulāika fī jannātin muk'ramūn

70:36

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِینَ ۝٣٦

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

So what is the matter with the disbelievers that they are coming towards you running

famāli alladhīna kafarū qibalaka muh'ṭiʿīn

70:37

عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِینَ ۝٣٧

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

From the right as well as the left, in groups

ayaṭmaʿu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yud'khala jannata naʿīmi

70:38

أَیَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِیمࣲ ۝٣٨

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Does every one of them hope that he may be admitted to the Garden of Bliss (without faith and deeds)

AyatmaAAu kullu imri-in minhum an yudkhala jannata naAAeemin

70:39

كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٩

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Certainly not! Surely, We have created them from a substance which they (also) know

kallā innā khalaqnāhum mimmā yaʿlamūn

70:40

فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ ۝٤٠

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

So I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that surely We have Absolute Power

falā uq'simu birabbi l-mashāriqi wal-maghāribi innā laqādirūn

70:41

عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَیۡرࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِینَ ۝٤١

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

To replace them with people better than them and We are not at all incapable (of doing it)

fadharhum yakhūḍū wayalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu alladhī yūʿadūn

70:42

فَذَرۡهُمۡ یَخُوضُوا۟ وَیَلۡعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یُلَـٰقُوا۟ یَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یُوعَدُونَ ۝٤٢

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

So leave them occupied with their absurd talk and pastime until they meet that Day of theirs which they have been promised

Fatharhum yakhoodoo wayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allathee yooAAadoona

70:43

یَوۡمَ یَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعࣰا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبࣲ یُوفِضُونَ ۝٤٣

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

The Day when they will come forth from their graves in haste as if they are running towards the temples of their idols

yawma yakhrujūna mina l-ajdāthi sirāʿan ka-annahum ilā nuṣubin yūfiḍūn

70:44

خَـٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡیَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِی كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٤٤

Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

(Their plight) will be that their eyes will be cast down (with shame and fear) and disgrace enveloping them. It is this Day which they were promised

khāshiʿatan abṣāruhum tarhaquhum dhillatun dhālika l-yawmu alladhī kānū yūʿadūn
