1 Certainty of the Punishment
70:1 ›
سَأَلَ سَاۤىِٕلُۢ بِعَذَابࣲ وَاقِعࣲ ۝١
Dr. Munir Munshey
The skeptics ask about the torment that is bound to land
sa-ala sāilun biʿadhābin wāqiʿi
70:2 ›
لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعࣱ ۝٢
Dr. Munir Munshey
Upon the unbelievers! Nothing can ward it off
lil'kāfirīna laysa lahu dāfiʿu
70:3 ›
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِی ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ ۝٣
Dr. Munir Munshey
(It is) from Allah, the Lord of the means of ascent (to the heavens)
mina l-lahi dhī l-maʿārij
70:4 ›
تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَیۡهِ فِی یَوۡمࣲ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِینَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةࣲ ۝٤
Dr. Munir Munshey
The angels and the spirits rise up towards Him during a day that spans fifty thousand years
taʿruju l-malāikatu wal-rūḥu ilayhi fī yawmin kāna miq'dāruhu khamsīna alfa sanati
70:5 ›
فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرࣰا جَمِیلًا ۝٥
Dr. Munir Munshey
So endure (all adversity) with grace and patience
fa-iṣ'bir ṣabran jamīla
70:6 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ یَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِیدࣰا ۝٦
Dr. Munir Munshey
Indeed, they consider the punishment to be far in the future
innahum yarawnahu baʿīda
70:7 ›
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِیبࣰا ۝٧
Dr. Munir Munshey
While We see it close at hand
wanarāhu qarība
70:8 ›
یَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ ۝٨
Dr. Munir Munshey
The sky that day, will be like molten copper
yawma takūnu l-samāu kal-muh'l
70:9 ›
وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ ۝٩
Dr. Munir Munshey
And the mountains like the fluffy tufts of wool
watakūnu l-jibālu kal-ʿih'n
70:10 ›
وَلَا یَسۡءَلُ حَمِیمٌ حَمِیمࣰا ۝١٠
Dr. Munir Munshey
Even the closest friends would fail to inquire about (the welfare of) their close friends
walā yasalu ḥamīmun ḥamīma
70:11 ›
یُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ یَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ یَفۡتَدِی مِنۡ عَذَابِ یَوۡمِىِٕذِۭ بِبَنِیهِ ۝١١
Dr. Munir Munshey
Although, they would see each other! The criminal, that day, would like to escape punishment by offering his own son as ransom
yubaṣṣarūnahum yawaddu l-muj'rimu law yaftadī min ʿadhābi yawmi-idhin bibanīh
70:12 ›
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِیهِ ۝١٢
Dr. Munir Munshey
His wife and his brother
waṣāḥibatihi wa-akhīh
70:13 ›
وَفَصِیلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِی تُءۡوِیهِ ۝١٣
Dr. Munir Munshey
And (all) relatives _ (even those) who had sheltered him (through the years)
wafaṣīlatihi allatī tu'wīh
70:14 ›
وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا ثُمَّ یُنجِیهِ ۝١٤
Dr. Munir Munshey
In fact, (he would be ready to offer as ransom) every single soul on earth, if he could (in return) save himself
waman fī l-arḍi jamīʿan thumma yunjīh
70:15 ›
كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ ۝١٥
Dr. Munir Munshey
No! Of course not! It is a blazing inferno
kallā innahā laẓ
70:16 ›
نَزَّاعَةࣰ لِّلشَّوَىٰ ۝١٦
Dr. Munir Munshey
And it will scald away the scalps (of the unbelievers)
nazzāʿatan lilshaw
70:17 ›
تَدۡعُوا۟ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ۝١٧
Dr. Munir Munshey
It will summon (by name), all those who turned their backs and ran away (from the truth)
tadʿū man adbara watawall
70:18 ›
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰۤ ۝١٨
Dr. Munir Munshey
And amassed (wealth), and hoarded it
wajamaʿa fa-awʿ
70:19 ›
۞ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا ۝١٩
Dr. Munir Munshey
Indeed, man is created impatient (and fretful)
inna l-insāna khuliqa halūʿa
70:20 ›
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعࣰا ۝٢٠
Dr. Munir Munshey
He (frets and) panics in the face of adversity
idhā massahu l-sharu jazūʿa
70:21 ›
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَیۡرُ مَنُوعًا ۝٢١
Dr. Munir Munshey
And acts niggardly when he encounters good fortune
wa-idhā massahu l-khayru manūʿa
70:22 ›
إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ ۝٢٢
Dr. Munir Munshey
Except those who perform ´salat´
illā l-muṣalīn
70:23 ›
ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝٢٣
Dr. Munir Munshey
(Successful are) those who are steadfast (prompt, and punctual) in their ´salat´
alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim dāimūn
70:24 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ فِیۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ حَقࣱّ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٢٤
Dr. Munir Munshey
Those who accept a due share in their wealth
wa-alladhīna fī amwālihim ḥaqqun maʿlūmu
70:25 ›
لِّلسَّاۤىِٕلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ ۝٢٥
Dr. Munir Munshey
For people seeking (alms), and for the deprived
lilssāili wal-maḥrūm
70:26 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ یُصَدِّقُونَ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٦
Dr. Munir Munshey
(Successful are) those who believe in the Day of Judgment
wa-alladhīna yuṣaddiqūna biyawmi l-dīn
70:27 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ ۝٢٧
Dr. Munir Munshey
Those who were fearful of the torment inflicted by their Lord
wa-alladhīna hum min ʿadhābi rabbihim mush'fiqūn
70:28 ›
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَیۡرُ مَأۡمُونࣲ ۝٢٨
Dr. Munir Munshey
Indeed, None may feel (wholly) secure and indifferent to the torment of their Lord
inna ʿadhāba rabbihim ghayru mamūni
70:29 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَـٰفِظُونَ ۝٢٩
Dr. Munir Munshey
(Successful are) those who rein in their sexuality
wa-alladhīna hum lifurūjihim ḥāfiẓūn
70:30 ›
إِلَّا عَلَىٰۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَیۡرُ مَلُومِینَ ۝٣٠
Dr. Munir Munshey
Except with their spouses _ those whom their right hands possess; because then, they are not blameworthy
illā ʿalā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānuhum fa-innahum ghayru malūmīn
70:31 ›
فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَاۤءَ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ ۝٣١
Dr. Munir Munshey
While those seeking anything beyond that are really the transgressors
famani ib'taghā warāa dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-ʿādūn
70:32 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَ ٰعُونَ ۝٣٢
Dr. Munir Munshey
(Successful are) those who discharged their trusts faithfully, and honor their pledges
wa-alladhīna hum li-amānātihim waʿahdihim rāʿūn
70:33 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَ ٰتِهِمۡ قَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝٣٣
Dr. Munir Munshey
And when they bear witness, they stand firm (and are truthful)
wa-alladhīna hum bishahādātihim qāimūn
70:34 ›
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ یُحَافِظُونَ ۝٣٤
Dr. Munir Munshey
Those who perform their ´salat´ devotedly and diligently
wa-alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim yuḥāfiẓūn
70:35 ›
أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٣٥
Dr. Munir Munshey
Such (righteous) ones would be honored in paradise
ulāika fī jannātin muk'ramūn
2 A New Nation to be raised
70:36 ›
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِینَ ۝٣٦
Dr. Munir Munshey
So what is wrong with the unbelievers? Why do they run towards you
famāli alladhīna kafarū qibalaka muh'ṭiʿīn
70:37 ›
عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِینَ ۝٣٧
Dr. Munir Munshey
(They are ever so ready to denounce you) in groups, on the right and on the left
ayaṭmaʿu kullu im'ri-in min'hum an yud'khala jannata naʿīmi
70:38 ›
أَیَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِىࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِیمࣲ ۝٣٨
Dr. Munir Munshey
Does every man among them aspire to enter the blessings filled paradise
AyatmaAAu kullu imri-in minhum an yudkhala jannata naAAeemin
70:39 ›
كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٩
Dr. Munir Munshey
No, of course not! We have created them out of (base) matter that they know (and are familiar with)
kallā innā khalaqnāhum mimmā yaʿlamūn
70:40 ›
فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ ۝٤٠
Dr. Munir Munshey
Certainly not! I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests, that We are indeed capable
falā uq'simu birabbi l-mashāriqi wal-maghāribi innā laqādirūn
70:41 ›
عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَیۡرࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِینَ ۝٤١
Dr. Munir Munshey
Of replacing them with (other creations) better than them. We shall certainly not be surpassed
fadharhum yakhūḍū wayalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu alladhī yūʿadūn
70:42 ›
فَذَرۡهُمۡ یَخُوضُوا۟ وَیَلۡعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یُلَـٰقُوا۟ یَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یُوعَدُونَ ۝٤٢
Dr. Munir Munshey
So let them stay engrossed in their idle talks and their games, until they come to face their promised day
Fatharhum yakhoodoo wayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allathee yooAAadoona
70:43 ›
یَوۡمَ یَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعࣰا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبࣲ یُوفِضُونَ ۝٤٣
Dr. Munir Munshey
That day they would rush out of their graves fast, as if they were hurrying towards their goal
yawma yakhrujūna mina l-ajdāthi sirāʿan ka-annahum ilā nuṣubin yūfiḍūn
70:44 ›
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡیَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِی كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٤٤
Dr. Munir Munshey
Their eyes shall be down cast (with shame). Humiliation and disgrace shall overwhelm them (completely). They are being promised (just) such a day
khāshiʿatan abṣāruhum tarhaquhum dhillatun dhālika l-yawmu alladhī kānū yūʿadūn
