1 Foreign Believers

۞ قُلۡ أُوحِیَ إِلَیَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسۡتَمَعَ نَفَرࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ فَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعۡنَا قُرۡءَانًا عَجَبࣰا ۝١

Arthur John Arberry

Say: 'It has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn gave ear, then they said, "We have indeed heard a Koran wonderful

qul ūḥiya ilayya annahu is'tamaʿa nafarun mina l-jini faqālū innā samiʿ'nā qur'ānan ʿajaba

یَهۡدِیۤ إِلَى ٱلرُّشۡدِ فَءَامَنَّا بِهِۦۖ وَلَن نُّشۡرِكَ بِرَبِّنَاۤ أَحَدࣰا ۝٢

Arthur John Arberry

guiding to rectitude. We believe in it, and we will not associate with our Lord anyone

yahdī ilā l-rush'di faāmannā bihi walan nush'rika birabbinā aḥada

وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَـٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَـٰحِبَةࣰ وَلَا وَلَدࣰا ۝٣

Arthur John Arberry

He -- exalted be our Lord's majesty! has not taken to Himself either consort or a son

wa-annahu taʿālā jaddu rabbinā mā ittakhadha ṣāḥibatan walā walada

وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ یَقُولُ سَفِیهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطࣰا ۝٤

Arthur John Arberry

The fool among us spoke against God outrage

wa-annahu kāna yaqūlu safīhunā ʿalā l-lahi shaṭaṭa

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّاۤ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلۡإِنسُ وَٱلۡجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبࣰا ۝٥

Arthur John Arberry

and we had thought that men and jinn would never speak against God a lie

wa-annā ẓanannā an lan taqūla l-insu wal-jinu ʿalā l-lahi kadhiba

وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡإِنسِ یَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمۡ رَهَقࣰا ۝٦

Arthur John Arberry

But there were certain men of mankind who would take refuge with certain men of the jinn, and they increased them in vileness

wa-annahu kāna rijālun mina l-insi yaʿūdhūna birijālin mina l-jini fazādūhum rahaqa

وَأَنَّهُمۡ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمۡ أَن لَّن یَبۡعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدࣰا ۝٧

Arthur John Arberry

and they thought, even as you also thought, that God would never raise up anyone

wa-annahum ẓannū kamā ẓanantum an lan yabʿatha l-lahu aḥada

وَأَنَّا لَمَسۡنَا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ فَوَجَدۡنَـٰهَا مُلِئَتۡ حَرَسࣰا شَدِیدࣰا وَشُهُبࣰا ۝٨

Arthur John Arberry

And we stretched towards heaven, but we found it filled with terrible guards and meteors

wa-annā lamasnā l-samāa fawajadnāhā muli-at ḥarasan shadīdan washuhuba

وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقۡعُدُ مِنۡهَا مَقَـٰعِدَ لِلسَّمۡعِۖ فَمَن یَسۡتَمِعِ ٱلۡءَانَ یَجِدۡ لَهُۥ شِهَابࣰا رَّصَدࣰا ۝٩

Arthur John Arberry

We would sit there on seats to hear; but any listening now finds a meteor in wait for him

wa-annā kunnā naqʿudu min'hā maqāʿida lilssamʿi faman yastamiʿi l-āna yajid lahu shihāban raṣada

وَأَنَّا لَا نَدۡرِیۤ أَشَرٌّ أُرِیدَ بِمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَمۡ أَرَادَ بِهِمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ رَشَدࣰا ۝١٠

Arthur John Arberry

And so we know not whether evil is intended for those in the earth, or whether their Lord intends for them rectitude

wa-annā lā nadrī asharrun urīda biman fī l-arḍi am arāda bihim rabbuhum rashada

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَ ٰلِكَۖ كُنَّا طَرَاۤىِٕقَ قِدَدࣰا ۝١١

Arthur John Arberry

And some of us are the righteous, and some of us are otherwise; we are sects differing

wa-annā minnā l-ṣāliḥūna waminnā dūna dhālika kunnā ṭarāiqa qidada

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّاۤ أَن لَّن نُّعۡجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَن نُّعۡجِزَهُۥ هَرَبࣰا ۝١٢

Arthur John Arberry

Indeed, we thought that we should never be able to frustrate God in the earth, neither be able to frustrate Him by flight

wa-annā ẓanannā an lan nuʿ'jiza l-laha fī l-arḍi walan nuʿ'jizahu haraba

وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعۡنَا ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦۖ فَمَن یُؤۡمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا یَخَافُ بَخۡسࣰا وَلَا رَهَقࣰا ۝١٣

Arthur John Arberry

When we heard the guidance, we believed in it; and whosoever believes in his Lord, he shall fear neither paltriness nor vileness

wa-annā lammā samiʿ'nā l-hudā āmannā bihi faman yu'min birabbihi falā yakhāfu bakhsan walā rahaqa

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلۡمُسۡلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلۡقَـٰسِطُونَۖ فَمَنۡ أَسۡلَمَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ تَحَرَّوۡا۟ رَشَدࣰا ۝١٤

Arthur John Arberry

And some of us have surrendered, and some of us have deviated. Those who have surrendered sought rectitude

wa-annā minnā l-mus'limūna waminnā l-qāsiṭūna faman aslama fa-ulāika taḥarraw rashada

وَأَمَّا ٱلۡقَـٰسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا۟ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبࣰا ۝١٥

Arthur John Arberry

but as for those who have deviated, they have become firewood for Gehenna!"

wa-ammā l-qāsiṭūna fakānū lijahannama ḥaṭaba

وَأَلَّوِ ٱسۡتَقَـٰمُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلطَّرِیقَةِ لَأَسۡقَیۡنَـٰهُم مَّاۤءً غَدَقࣰا ۝١٦

Arthur John Arberry

Would they but go straight on the way, We would give them to drink of water copious

wa-allawi is'taqāmū ʿalā l-ṭarīqati la-asqaynāhum māan ghadaqa

لِّنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ فِیهِۚ وَمَن یُعۡرِضۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ رَبِّهِۦ یَسۡلُكۡهُ عَذَابࣰا صَعَدࣰا ۝١٧

Arthur John Arberry

that We might try them therein. And whosoever turns away from the Remembrance of his Lord, He will thrust him into chastisement rigorous

linaftinahum fīhi waman yuʿ'riḍ ʿan dhik'ri rabbihi yasluk'hu ʿadhāban ṣaʿada

وَأَنَّ ٱلۡمَسَـٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدۡعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدࣰا ۝١٨

Arthur John Arberry

The places of worship belong to God; so call not, along with God, upon anyone

wa-anna l-masājida lillahi falā tadʿū maʿa l-lahi aḥada

وَأَنَّهُۥ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبۡدُ ٱللَّهِ یَدۡعُوهُ كَادُوا۟ یَكُونُونَ عَلَیۡهِ لِبَدࣰا ۝١٩

Arthur John Arberry

When the servant of God stood calling on Him, they were wellnigh upon him in swarms

wa-annahu lammā qāma ʿabdu l-lahi yadʿūhu kādū yakūnūna ʿalayhi libada

2 Protection of Revelation

قُلۡ إِنَّمَاۤ أَدۡعُوا۟ رَبِّی وَلَاۤ أُشۡرِكُ بِهِۦۤ أَحَدࣰا ۝٢٠

Arthur John Arberry

Say: 'I call only upon my Lord, and I do not associate with Him anyone

qul innamā adʿū rabbī walā ush'riku bihi aḥada

قُلۡ إِنِّی لَاۤ أَمۡلِكُ لَكُمۡ ضَرࣰّا وَلَا رَشَدࣰا ۝٢١

Arthur John Arberry

Say: 'Surely I possess no power over you, either for hurt or for rectitude.

qul innī lā amliku lakum ḍarran walā rashada

قُلۡ إِنِّی لَن یُجِیرَنِی مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدࣱ وَلَنۡ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلۡتَحَدًا ۝٢٢

Arthur John Arberry

Say: 'From God shall protect me not anyone, and I shall find, apart from Him, no refuge

qul innī lan yujīranī mina l-lahi aḥadun walan ajida min dūnihi mul'taḥada

إِلَّا بَلَـٰغࣰا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦۚ وَمَن یَعۡصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ أَبَدًا ۝٢٣

Arthur John Arberry

excepting a Deliverance from God and His Messages. And whoso rebels against God and His messenger, for him there awaits the Fire of Gehenna; therein they shall dwell forever.

illā balāghan mina l-lahi warisālātihi waman yaʿṣi l-laha warasūlahu fa-inna lahu nāra jahannama khālidīna fīhā abada

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا رَأَوۡا۟ مَا یُوعَدُونَ فَسَیَعۡلَمُونَ مَنۡ أَضۡعَفُ نَاصِرࣰا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدࣰا ۝٢٤

Arthur John Arberry

Until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and fewer in numbers

ḥattā idhā ra-aw mā yūʿadūna fasayaʿlamūna man aḍʿafu nāṣiran wa-aqallu ʿadada

قُلۡ إِنۡ أَدۡرِیۤ أَقَرِیبࣱ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ أَمۡ یَجۡعَلُ لَهُۥ رَبِّیۤ أَمَدًا ۝٢٥

Arthur John Arberry

Say: 'I do not know whether that which you are promised is nigh, or whether my Lord will appoint for it a space

qul in adrī aqarībun mā tūʿadūna am yajʿalu lahu rabbī amada

عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ فَلَا یُظۡهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَیۡبِهِۦۤ أَحَدًا ۝٢٦

Arthur John Arberry

Knower He of the Unseen, and He discloses not His Unseen to anyone

illā mani ir'taḍā min rasūlin fa-innahu yasluku min bayni yadayhi wamin khalfihi raṣada

إِلَّا مَنِ ٱرۡتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولࣲ فَإِنَّهُۥ یَسۡلُكُ مِنۢ بَیۡنِ یَدَیۡهِ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِۦ رَصَدࣰا ۝٢٧

Arthur John Arberry

save only to such a Messenger as He is well-pleased with; then He despatches before him and behind him watchers

Illa mani irtada min rasoolin fa-innahu yasluku min bayni yadayhi wamin khalfihi rasadan

لِّیَعۡلَمَ أَن قَدۡ أَبۡلَغُوا۟ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَیۡهِمۡ وَأَحۡصَىٰ كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ عَدَدَۢا ۝٢٨

Arthur John Arberry

that He may know they have delivered the Messages of their Lord; and He encompasses all that is with them, and He has numbered everything in numbers.

liyaʿlama an qad ablaghū risālāti rabbihim wa-aḥāṭa bimā ladayhim wa-aḥṣā kulla shayin ʿadada
