8:1

۞ یَسۡءَلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡأَنفَالِۖ قُلِ ٱلۡأَنفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَصۡلِحُوا۟ ذَاتَ بَیۡنِكُمۡۖ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۤ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

They ask you about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to God and the Messenger. So, have fear of God and set right your internal relations. Obey God and His Messenger, if you are true believers.

yasalūnaka ʿani l-anfāli quli l-anfālu lillahi wal-rasūli fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṣliḥū dhāta baynikum wa-aṭīʿū l-laha warasūlahu in kuntum mu'minīn

8:2

إِنَّمَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِینَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَجِلَتۡ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَإِذَا تُلِیَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتُهُۥ زَادَتۡهُمۡ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ ۝٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

True believers are only those whose hearts are filled with awe whenever God is mentioned, and whose faith is strengthened whenever His revelations are recited to them. In their Lord do they place their trust.

innamā l-mu'minūna alladhīna idhā dhukira l-lahu wajilat qulūbuhum wa-idhā tuliyat ʿalayhim āyātuhu zādathum īmānan waʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūn

8:3

ٱلَّذِینَ یُقِیمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ یُنفِقُونَ ۝٣

They attend regularly to their prayers and spend on others some of what We have provided them with.

alladhīna yuqīmūna l-ṣalata wamimmā razaqnāhum yunfiqūn

8:4

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ حَقࣰّاۚ لَّهُمۡ دَرَجَـٰتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ وَمَغۡفِرَةࣱ وَرِزۡقࣱ كَرِیمࣱ ۝٤

It is those who are truly believers. They shall be given high ranks with their Lord, and forgiveness of sins and generous provisions.

ulāika humu l-mu'minūna ḥaqqan lahum darajātun ʿinda rabbihim wamaghfiratun wariz'qun karīmu

8:5

كَمَاۤ أَخۡرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ مِنۢ بَیۡتِكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَإِنَّ فَرِیقࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ لَكَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Just as your Lord brought you forth from your home for the truth, even though some of the believers were averse to it.

kamā akhrajaka rabbuka min baytika bil-ḥaqi wa-inna farīqan mina l-mu'minīna lakārihūn

8:6

یُجَـٰدِلُونَكَ فِی ٱلۡحَقِّ بَعۡدَ مَا تَبَیَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا یُسَاقُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَوۡتِ وَهُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ ۝٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

They would argue with you about the truth even after it had become manifest, just as if they were being driven to certain death and saw it with their very eyes.

yujādilūnaka fī l-ḥaqi baʿdamā 0 tabayyana ka-annamā yusāqūna ilā l-mawti wahum yanẓurūn

8:7

وَإِذۡ یَعِدُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ إِحۡدَى ٱلطَّاۤىِٕفَتَیۡنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمۡ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَیۡرَ ذَاتِ ٱلشَّوۡكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمۡ وَیُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن یُحِقَّ ٱلۡحَقَّ بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَیَقۡطَعَ دَابِرَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

God promised you that one of the two hosts would fall to you. It was your wish that the one which was not powerful to be yours, but it was God's will to establish the truth in accordance with His words and to wipe out the unbelievers.

wa-idh yaʿidukumu l-lahu iḥ'dā l-ṭāifatayni annahā lakum watawaddūna anna ghayra dhāti l-shawkati takūnu lakum wayurīdu l-lahu an yuḥiqqa l-ḥaqa bikalimātihi wayaqṭaʿa dābira l-kāfirīn

8:8

لِیُحِقَّ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَیُبۡطِلَ ٱلۡبَـٰطِلَ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Thus He would certainly establish the truth firmly and show false- hood to be false, however hateful this might be to the evildoers.

liyuḥiqqa l-ḥaqa wayub'ṭila l-bāṭila walaw kariha l-muj'rimūn

8:9

إِذۡ تَسۡتَغِیثُونَ رَبَّكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَجَابَ لَكُمۡ أَنِّی مُمِدُّكُم بِأَلۡفࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ مُرۡدِفِینَ ۝٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

When you implored your Lord for help, He answered: `I will reinforce you with a thousand angels advancing in ranks.'

idh tastaghīthūna rabbakum fa-is'tajāba lakum annī mumiddukum bi-alfin mina l-malāikati mur'difīn

8:10

وَمَا جَعَلَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بُشۡرَىٰ وَلِتَطۡمَىِٕنَّ بِهِۦ قُلُوبُكُمۡۚ وَمَا ٱلنَّصۡرُ إِلَّا مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمٌ ۝١٠

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

God made this only as good news with which to reassure your hearts, for victory comes only from God. Indeed, God is Almighty, Wise.

wamā jaʿalahu l-lahu illā bush'rā walitaṭma-inna bihi qulūbukum wamā l-naṣru illā min ʿindi l-lahi inna l-laha ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

8:11

إِذۡ یُغَشِّیكُمُ ٱلنُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةࣰ مِّنۡهُ وَیُنَزِّلُ عَلَیۡكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ لِّیُطَهِّرَكُم بِهِۦ وَیُذۡهِبَ عَنكُمۡ رِجۡزَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ وَلِیَرۡبِطَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمۡ وَیُثَبِّتَ بِهِ ٱلۡأَقۡدَامَ ۝١١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

He made slumber fall upon you, as an assurance from Him, and He sent down water from the sky to cleanse you and to remove from you Satan's filth, to strengthen your hearts and steady your footsteps.

idh yughashīkumu l-nuʿāsa amanatan min'hu wayunazzilu ʿalaykum mina l-samāi māan liyuṭahhirakum bihi wayudh'hiba ʿankum rij'za l-shayṭāni waliyarbiṭa ʿalā qulūbikum wayuthabbita bihi l-aqdām

8:12

إِذۡ یُوحِی رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ أَنِّی مَعَكُمۡ فَثَبِّتُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ۚ سَأُلۡقِی فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلرُّعۡبَ فَٱضۡرِبُوا۟ فَوۡقَ ٱلۡأَعۡنَاقِ وَٱضۡرِبُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ كُلَّ بَنَانࣲ ۝١٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Your Lord inspired the angels, saying: `I am with you. So, give courage to the believers. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Strike, then, their necks and strike off their every fingertip.'

idh yūḥī rabbuka ilā l-malāikati annī maʿakum fathabbitū alladhīna āmanū sa-ul'qī fī qulūbi alladhīna kafarū l-ruʿ'ba fa-iḍ'ribū fawqa l-aʿnāqi wa-iḍ'ribū min'hum kulla banāni

8:13

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ شَاۤقُّوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ وَمَن یُشَاقِقِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝١٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

This is because they have defied God and His Messenger. Whoever defies God and His Messenger [will find out that] God is severe in retribution.

dhālika bi-annahum shāqqū l-laha warasūlahu waman yushāqiqi l-laha warasūlahu fa-inna l-laha shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

8:14

ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ فَذُوقُوهُ وَأَنَّ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ ۝١٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

This is for you, [enemies of God]! Taste it, then. The unbelievers shall be made to suffer the torment of fire.

dhālikum fadhūqūhu wa-anna lil'kāfirīna ʿadhāba l-nār

8:15

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا لَقِیتُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ زَحۡفࣰا فَلَا تُوَلُّوهُمُ ٱلۡأَدۡبَارَ ۝١٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Believers, when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, do not turn your backs to them in flight.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā laqītumu alladhīna kafarū zaḥfan falā tuwallūhumu l-adbār

8:16

وَمَن یُوَلِّهِمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ دُبُرَهُۥۤ إِلَّا مُتَحَرِّفࣰا لِّقِتَالٍ أَوۡ مُتَحَیِّزًا إِلَىٰ فِئَةࣲ فَقَدۡ بَاۤءَ بِغَضَبࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝١٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Anyone who turns his back to them on that day, except when manoeuvring for battle or in an endeavour to join another troop, shall incur God's wrath, and hell shall be his abode: how vile a journey's end.

waman yuwallihim yawma-idhin duburahu illā mutaḥarrifan liqitālin aw mutaḥayyizan ilā fi-atin faqad bāa bighaḍabin mina l-lahi wamawāhu jahannamu wabi'sa l-maṣīr

8:17

فَلَمۡ تَقۡتُلُوهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمۡۚ وَمَا رَمَیۡتَ إِذۡ رَمَیۡتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَمَىٰ وَلِیُبۡلِیَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ مِنۡهُ بَلَاۤءً حَسَنًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝١٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

It was not you who slew them, but it was God who slew them. When you threw [a handful of dust], it was not your act, but God's, so that He might put the believers through a fair test of His own making. Indeed, God hears all and knows all.

falam taqtulūhum walākinna l-laha qatalahum wamā ramayta idh ramayta walākinna l-laha ramā waliyub'liya l-mu'minīna min'hu balāan ḥasanan inna l-laha samīʿun ʿalīmu

8:18

ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُوهِنُ كَیۡدِ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

That is so; it is God who shall make feeble the schemes of the unbelievers.

dhālikum wa-anna l-laha mūhinu kaydi l-kāfirīn

8:19

إِن تَسۡتَفۡتِحُوا۟ فَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلۡفَتۡحُۖ وَإِن تَنتَهُوا۟ فَهُوَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡۖ وَإِن تَعُودُوا۟ نَعُدۡ وَلَن تُغۡنِیَ عَنكُمۡ فِئَتُكُمۡ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَوۡ كَثُرَتۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

If you were seeking a judgement, then a judgement has come to you. If you desist, it will be best for you; and if you revert to your erring ways, We will also be back [with Our punishment]. Your host, numerous as it may be, shall avail you nothing; for God is with the believers.

in tastaftiḥū faqad jāakumu l-fatḥu wa-in tantahū fahuwa khayrun lakum wa-in taʿūdū naʿud walan tugh'niya ʿankum fi-atukum shayan walaw kathurat wa-anna l-laha maʿa l-mu'minīn

8:20

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ أَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَا تَوَلَّوۡا۟ عَنۡهُ وَأَنتُمۡ تَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٢٠

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Believers, obey God and His Messenger, and do not turn away from him now that you have heard [his message].

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū aṭīʿū l-laha warasūlahu walā tawallaw ʿanhu wa-antum tasmaʿūn

8:21

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوا۟ سَمِعۡنَا وَهُمۡ لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٢١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Do not be like those who say: `We have heard,' while they do not listen.

walā takūnū ka-alladhīna qālū samiʿ'nā wahum lā yasmaʿūn

8:22

۞ إِنَّ شَرَّ ٱلدَّوَاۤبِّ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلصُّمُّ ٱلۡبُكۡمُ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Indeed, the worst of all creatures, in God's sight, are the deaf and dumb who are devoid of reason.

inna sharra l-dawābi ʿinda l-lahi l-ṣumu l-buk'mu alladhīna lā yaʿqilūn

8:23

وَلَوۡ عَلِمَ ٱللَّهُ فِیهِمۡ خَیۡرࣰا لَّأَسۡمَعَهُمۡۖ وَلَوۡ أَسۡمَعَهُمۡ لَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٢٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

If God had known of any good in them, He would certainly have made them hear. But even if He were to make them hear, they would have turned away and refused to listen.

walaw ʿalima l-lahu fīhim khayran la-asmaʿahum walaw asmaʿahum latawallaw wahum muʿ'riḍūn

8:24

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱسۡتَجِیبُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمۡ لِمَا یُحۡیِیكُمۡۖ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَحُولُ بَیۡنَ ٱلۡمَرۡءِ وَقَلۡبِهِۦ وَأَنَّهُۥۤ إِلَیۡهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٢٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Believers, respond to the call of God and the Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life, and know that God comes in between a man and his heart, and that to Him you shall all be gathered.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū is'tajībū lillahi walilrrasūli idhā daʿākum limā yuḥ'yīkum wa-iʿ'lamū anna l-laha yaḥūlu bayna l-mari waqalbihi wa-annahu ilayhi tuḥ'sharūn

8:25

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ فِتۡنَةࣰ لَّا تُصِیبَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنكُمۡ خَاۤصَّةࣰۖ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝٢٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Beware of temptation that does not lure only those among you who are wrongdoers. Know that God is severe in retribution.

wa-ittaqū fit'natan lā tuṣībanna alladhīna ẓalamū minkum khāṣṣatan wa-iʿ'lamū anna l-laha shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

8:26

وَٱذۡكُرُوۤا۟ إِذۡ أَنتُمۡ قَلِیلࣱ مُّسۡتَضۡعَفُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ تَخَافُونَ أَن یَتَخَطَّفَكُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ فَءَاوَىٰكُمۡ وَأَیَّدَكُم بِنَصۡرِهِۦ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٢٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Remember when you were few and helpless in the land, fearful lest people do away with you: how He sheltered you, strengthened you with His support and provided you with many good things so that you might be grateful.

wa-udh'kurū idh antum qalīlun mus'taḍʿafūna fī l-arḍi takhāfūna an yatakhaṭṭafakumu l-nāsu faāwākum wa-ayyadakum binaṣrihi warazaqakum mina l-ṭayibāti laʿallakum tashkurūn

8:27

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَخُونُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَ وَتَخُونُوۤا۟ أَمَـٰنَـٰتِكُمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Believers, do not betray God and the Messenger, nor knowingly betray the trust that has been reposed in you.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā takhūnū l-laha wal-rasūla watakhūnū amānātikum wa-antum taʿlamūn

8:28

وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّمَاۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلُكُمۡ وَأَوۡلَـٰدُكُمۡ فِتۡنَةࣱ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥۤ أَجۡرٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝٢٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Know that your worldly goods and your children are but a trial, and that with God there is a great reward.

wa-iʿ'lamū annamā amwālukum wa-awlādukum fit'natun wa-anna l-laha ʿindahu ajrun ʿaẓīmu

8:29

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِن تَتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ یَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ فُرۡقَانࣰا وَیُكَفِّرۡ عَنكُمۡ سَیِّءَاتِكُمۡ وَیَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلۡفَضۡلِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٢٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Believers, if you remain God- fearing, He will give you a standard by which to discern the true from the false, and will wipe off your bad deeds, and forgive you. God's bounty is great indeed.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū in tattaqū l-laha yajʿal lakum fur'qānan wayukaffir ʿankum sayyiātikum wayaghfir lakum wal-lahu dhū l-faḍli l-ʿaẓīm

8:30

وَإِذۡ یَمۡكُرُ بِكَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِیُثۡبِتُوكَ أَوۡ یَقۡتُلُوكَ أَوۡ یُخۡرِجُوكَۚ وَیَمۡكُرُونَ وَیَمۡكُرُ ٱللَّهُۖ وَٱللَّهُ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡمَـٰكِرِینَ ۝٣٠

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Remember how the unbelievers were scheming against you, seeking to keep you in chains or have you slain or banished. Thus they plot and plan, but God also plans. God is above all schemers.

wa-idh yamkuru bika alladhīna kafarū liyuth'bitūka aw yaqtulūka aw yukh'rijūka wayamkurūna wayamkuru l-lahu wal-lahu khayru l-mākirīn

8:31

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتُنَا قَالُوا۟ قَدۡ سَمِعۡنَا لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَقُلۡنَا مِثۡلَ هَـٰذَاۤ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّاۤ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٣١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Whenever Our revelations are recited to them, they would say: 'We have heard them. If we wanted, we could certainly compose the like of this. This is nothing but fables of the ancients.'

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhim āyātunā qālū qad samiʿ'nā law nashāu laqul'nā mith'la hādhā in hādhā illā asāṭīru l-awalīn

8:32

وَإِذۡ قَالُوا۟ ٱللَّهُمَّ إِن كَانَ هَـٰذَا هُوَ ٱلۡحَقَّ مِنۡ عِندِكَ فَأَمۡطِرۡ عَلَیۡنَا حِجَارَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ أَوِ ٱئۡتِنَا بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

They would also say: 'God, if this be indeed Your revealed truth, then rain down upon us stones from the skies, or inflict grievous suffering on us.'

wa-idh qālū l-lahuma in kāna hādhā huwa l-ḥaqa min ʿindika fa-amṭir ʿalaynā ḥijāratan mina l-samāi awi i'tinā biʿadhābin alīmi

8:33

وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیُعَذِّبَهُمۡ وَأَنتَ فِیهِمۡۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمۡ وَهُمۡ یَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ ۝٣٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

But God would not punish them while you were present in their midst, nor would God punish them when they may yet ask for forgiveness.

wamā kāna l-lahu liyuʿadhibahum wa-anta fīhim wamā kāna l-lahu muʿadhibahum wahum yastaghfirūn

8:34

وَمَا لَهُمۡ أَلَّا یُعَذِّبَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَهُمۡ یَصُدُّونَ عَنِ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِ وَمَا كَانُوۤا۟ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَهُۥۤۚ إِنۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤؤُهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

What [plea] have they now that God should not punish them, when they debar other people from the Sacred Mosque, although they are not its rightful guardians? Its only guardians are those that fear God; but of this most of these [evildoers] are unaware.

wamā lahum allā yuʿadhibahumu l-lahu wahum yaṣuddūna ʿani l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi wamā kānū awliyāahu in awliyāuhu illā l-mutaqūna walākinna aktharahum lā yaʿlamūn

8:35

وَمَا كَانَ صَلَاتُهُمۡ عِندَ ٱلۡبَیۡتِ إِلَّا مُكَاۤءࣰ وَتَصۡدِیَةࣰۚ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٣٥

Their prayers at the House are nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. Taste then this punishment in consequence of your disbelief.

wamā kāna ṣalātuhum ʿinda l-bayti illā mukāan wataṣdiyatan fadhūqū l-ʿadhāba bimā kuntum takfurūn

8:36

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یُنفِقُونَ أَمۡوَ ٰلَهُمۡ لِیَصُدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ فَسَیُنفِقُونَهَا ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ حَسۡرَةࣰ ثُمَّ یُغۡلَبُونَۗ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ یُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٣٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

The unbelievers spend their riches in order to turn people away from the path of God. They will go on spending them, and then this will become a source of intense regret for them; and then they shall be defeated. The unbelievers shall into hell be driven.

inna alladhīna kafarū yunfiqūna amwālahum liyaṣuddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi fasayunfiqūnahā thumma takūnu ʿalayhim ḥasratan thumma yugh'labūna wa-alladhīna kafarū ilā jahannama yuḥ'sharūn

8:37

لِیَمِیزَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخَبِیثَ مِنَ ٱلطَّیِّبِ وَیَجۡعَلَ ٱلۡخَبِیثَ بَعۡضَهُۥ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ فَیَرۡكُمَهُۥ جَمِیعࣰا فَیَجۡعَلَهُۥ فِی جَهَنَّمَۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٣٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

God will separate the bad from the good. The bad He will place one upon another, so He may heap them all up together, and then cast them into hell. Those indeed are the losers.

liyamīza l-lahu l-khabītha mina l-ṭayibi wayajʿala l-khabītha baʿḍahu ʿalā baʿḍin fayarkumahu jamīʿan fayajʿalahu fī jahannama ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

8:38

قُل لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِن یَنتَهُوا۟ یُغۡفَرۡ لَهُم مَّا قَدۡ سَلَفَ وَإِن یَعُودُوا۟ فَقَدۡ مَضَتۡ سُنَّتُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٣٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Say to the unbelievers that if they desist, all that is past shall be forgiven them; but if they persist [in their erring ways], let them remember what happened to the like of them in former times.

qul lilladhīna kafarū in yantahū yugh'far lahum mā qad salafa wa-in yaʿūdū faqad maḍat sunnatu l-awalīn

8:39

وَقَـٰتِلُوهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتۡنَةࣱ وَیَكُونَ ٱلدِّینُ كُلُّهُۥ لِلَّهِۚ فَإِنِ ٱنتَهَوۡا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِیرࣱ ۝٣٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Fight them until there is no more oppression, and all submission is made to God alone. If they desist, God is certainly aware of all they do.

waqātilūhum ḥattā lā takūna fit'natun wayakūna l-dīnu kulluhu lillahi fa-ini intahaw fa-inna l-laha bimā yaʿmalūna baṣīru

8:40

وَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَوۡلَىٰكُمۡۚ نِعۡمَ ٱلۡمَوۡلَىٰ وَنِعۡمَ ٱلنَّصِیرُ ۝٤٠

But if they turn away, know that God is your Lord Supreme. How splendid is this Lord Supreme, and how splendid is this giver of support.

wa-in tawallaw fa-iʿ'lamū anna l-laha mawlākum niʿ'ma l-mawlā waniʿ'ma l-naṣīr

8:41

۞ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّمَا غَنِمۡتُم مِّن شَیۡءࣲ فَأَنَّ لِلَّهِ خُمُسَهُۥ وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَلِذِی ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ إِن كُنتُمۡ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ وَمَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَىٰ عَبۡدِنَا یَوۡمَ ٱلۡفُرۡقَانِ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرٌ ۝٤١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Know that one-fifth of whatever booty you may acquire in war is for God and the Messenger, and for the near of kin, the orphans, the needy and the traveller in need. [This you must observe] if you believe in God and what We revealed to Our servant on the day when the true was distinguished from the false, the day when the two hosts met in battle. God has power over all things.

wa-iʿ'lamū annamā ghanim'tum min shayin fa-anna lillahi khumusahu walilrrasūli walidhī l-qur'bā wal-yatāmā wal-masākīni wa-ib'ni l-sabīli in kuntum āmantum bil-lahi wamā anzalnā ʿalā ʿabdinā yawma l-fur'qāni yawma l-taqā l-jamʿāni wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

8:42

إِذۡ أَنتُم بِٱلۡعُدۡوَةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَهُم بِٱلۡعُدۡوَةِ ٱلۡقُصۡوَىٰ وَٱلرَّكۡبُ أَسۡفَلَ مِنكُمۡۚ وَلَوۡ تَوَاعَدتُّمۡ لَٱخۡتَلَفۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡمِیعَـٰدِ وَلَـٰكِن لِّیَقۡضِیَ ٱللَّهُ أَمۡرࣰا كَانَ مَفۡعُولࣰا لِّیَهۡلِكَ مَنۡ هَلَكَ عَنۢ بَیِّنَةࣲ وَیَحۡیَىٰ مَنۡ حَیَّ عَنۢ بَیِّنَةࣲۗ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَسَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ ۝٤٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

[Remember the day] when you were at the near end of the valley and they were at the farthest end, with the caravan down below you. If you had made prior arrangements to meet there, you would have differed on the exact timing and location. But it was all brought about so that God might accomplish something He willed to be done, and so that anyone who was destined to perish might perish in clear evidence of the truth and anyone destined to live might live in clear evidence of the truth. God certainly hears all and knows all.

idh antum bil-ʿud'wati l-dun'yā wahum bil-ʿud'wati l-quṣ'wā wal-rakbu asfala minkum walaw tawāʿadttum la-ikh'talaftum fī l-mīʿādi walākin liyaqḍiya l-lahu amran kāna mafʿūlan liyahlika man halaka ʿan bayyinatin wayaḥyā man ḥayya ʿan bayyinatin wa-inna l-laha lasamīʿun ʿalīmu

8:43

إِذۡ یُرِیكَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِی مَنَامِكَ قَلِیلࣰاۖ وَلَوۡ أَرَىٰكَهُمۡ كَثِیرࣰا لَّفَشِلۡتُمۡ وَلَتَنَـٰزَعۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَمۡرِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَلَّمَۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝٤٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

God made them appear to you in your dream as few in number. Had He shown them to you as a large force, you would have lost heart and would surely have been in dispute about what to do. But this God has spared you. He has full knowledge of what is in people's hearts.

idh yurīkahumu l-lahu fī manāmika qalīlan walaw arākahum kathīran lafashil'tum walatanāzaʿtum fī l-amri walākinna l-laha sallama innahu ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

8:44

وَإِذۡ یُرِیكُمُوهُمۡ إِذِ ٱلۡتَقَیۡتُمۡ فِیۤ أَعۡیُنِكُمۡ قَلِیلࣰا وَیُقَلِّلُكُمۡ فِیۤ أَعۡیُنِهِمۡ لِیَقۡضِیَ ٱللَّهُ أَمۡرࣰا كَانَ مَفۡعُولࣰاۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ تُرۡجَعُ ٱلۡأُمُورُ ۝٤٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

When you actually met, He made them appear few in your eyes, just as He made you appear as a small band in their eyes, so that God might accomplish something He willed to be done. To God shall all things return.

wa-idh yurīkumūhum idhi l-taqaytum fī aʿyunikum qalīlan wayuqallilukum fī aʿyunihim liyaqḍiya l-lahu amran kāna mafʿūlan wa-ilā l-lahi tur'jaʿu l-umūr

8:45

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا لَقِیتُمۡ فِئَةࣰ فَٱثۡبُتُوا۟ وَٱذۡكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٤٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Believers, when you meet an enemy force, be firm, and remember God often, so that you may be successful.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā laqītum fi-atan fa-uth'butū wa-udh'kurū l-laha kathīran laʿallakum tuf'liḥūn

8:46

وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَا تَنَـٰزَعُوا۟ فَتَفۡشَلُوا۟ وَتَذۡهَبَ رِیحُكُمۡۖ وَٱصۡبِرُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝٤٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Obey God and His Messenger and do not dispute with one another, lest you lose heart and your moral strength. Be patient in adversity, for God is with those who are patient in adversity.

wa-aṭīʿū l-laha warasūlahu walā tanāzaʿū fatafshalū watadhhaba rīḥukum wa-iṣ'birū inna l-laha maʿa l-ṣābirīn

8:47

وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِینَ خَرَجُوا۟ مِن دِیَـٰرِهِم بَطَرࣰا وَرِئَاۤءَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَیَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِیطࣱ ۝٤٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Do not be like those who left their homes full of self-conceit, seeking to be seen and praised by others. They debar others from the path of God; but God has knowledge of all that they do.

walā takūnū ka-alladhīna kharajū min diyārihim baṭaran wariāa l-nāsi wayaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi wal-lahu bimā yaʿmalūna muḥīṭu

8:48

وَإِذۡ زَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ وَقَالَ لَا غَالِبَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَإِنِّی جَارࣱ لَّكُمۡۖ فَلَمَّا تَرَاۤءَتِ ٱلۡفِئَتَانِ نَكَصَ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَیۡهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّنكُمۡ إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰ مَا لَا تَرَوۡنَ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ ٱللَّهَۚ وَٱللَّهُ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝٤٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Satan made their deeds seem fair to them, and said: 'No one can overcome you today, and I will stand firm by you.' But when the two hosts came within sight of each other, he turned on his heels and said: 'I am done with you, for I can see what you cannot. I fear God, for God is severe in retribution.'

wa-idh zayyana lahumu l-shayṭānu aʿmālahum waqāla lā ghāliba lakumu l-yawma mina l-nāsi wa-innī jārun lakum falammā tarāati l-fi-atāni nakaṣa ʿalā ʿaqibayhi waqāla innī barīon minkum innī arā mā lā tarawna innī akhāfu l-laha wal-lahu shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

8:49

إِذۡ یَقُولُ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ غَرَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ دِینُهُمۡۗ وَمَن یَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٤٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

The hypocrites and those in whose hearts there was disease said: `Their faith has deluded these people.' But he who puts his trust in God knows that God is Almighty, Wise.

idh yaqūlu l-munāfiqūna wa-alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun gharra hāulāi dīnuhum waman yatawakkal ʿalā l-lahi fa-inna l-laha ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

8:50

وَلَوۡ تَرَىٰۤ إِذۡ یَتَوَفَّى ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ یَضۡرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمۡ وَأَدۡبَـٰرَهُمۡ وَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابَ ٱلۡحَرِیقِ ۝٥٠

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

If you could but see how the angels gather up the souls of the unbelievers. They strike them on their faces and their backs and [say]: `Taste the punishment of burning,

walaw tarā idh yatawaffā alladhīna kafarū l-malāikatu yaḍribūna wujūhahum wa-adbārahum wadhūqū ʿadhāba l-ḥarīq

8:51

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَیۡدِیكُمۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَیۡسَ بِظَلَّـٰمࣲ لِّلۡعَبِیدِ ۝٥١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

in return for what your own hands have committed. Never does God do any injustice to His servants.'

dhālika bimā qaddamat aydīkum wa-anna l-laha laysa biẓallāmin lil'ʿabīd

8:52

كَدَأۡبِ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِیࣱّ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ ۝٥٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Like Pharaoh's people and those who lived before them, they denied God's revelations; so God took them to task for their sins. God is Mighty, severe in retribution.

kadabi āli fir'ʿawna wa-alladhīna min qablihim kafarū biāyāti l-lahi fa-akhadhahumu l-lahu bidhunūbihim inna l-laha qawiyyun shadīdu l-ʿiqāb

8:53

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمۡ یَكُ مُغَیِّرࣰا نِّعۡمَةً أَنۡعَمَهَا عَلَىٰ قَوۡمٍ حَتَّىٰ یُغَیِّرُوا۟ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٥٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

This is because God would never alter the favours He bestows on a community unless they change what is in their hearts. God hears all and knows all.

dhālika bi-anna l-laha lam yaku mughayyiran niʿ'matan anʿamahā ʿalā qawmin ḥattā yughayyirū mā bi-anfusihim wa-anna l-laha samīʿun ʿalīmu

8:54

كَدَأۡبِ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَأَغۡرَقۡنَاۤ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ وَكُلࣱّ كَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٥٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Like Pharaoh's people and those who lived before them, they disbelieved in their Lord's revelations; so We destroyed them for their sins, as We caused Pharaoh's people to drown. They were wrongdoers all.

kadabi āli fir'ʿawna wa-alladhīna min qablihim kadhabū biāyāti rabbihim fa-ahlaknāhum bidhunūbihim wa-aghraqnā āla fir'ʿawna wakullun kānū ẓālimīn

8:55

إِنَّ شَرَّ ٱلدَّوَاۤبِّ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَهُمۡ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Indeed, the worst of all creatures in God's sight are the ones who have denied the truth, and therefore will not believe;

inna sharra l-dawābi ʿinda l-lahi alladhīna kafarū fahum lā yu'minūn

8:56

ٱلَّذِینَ عَـٰهَدتَّ مِنۡهُمۡ ثُمَّ یَنقُضُونَ عَهۡدَهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ مَرَّةࣲ وَهُمۡ لَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝٥٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

those with whom you have concluded a treaty, and then they break their treaty at every occasion, entertaining no sense of fearing God.

alladhīna ʿāhadtta min'hum thumma yanquḍūna ʿahdahum fī kulli marratin wahum lā yattaqūn

8:57

فَإِمَّا تَثۡقَفَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَرۡبِ فَشَرِّدۡ بِهِم مَّنۡ خَلۡفَهُمۡ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝٥٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Should you meet them in battle, make of them a fearsome example for those who follow them, so that they may reflect and take it to heart.

fa-immā tathqafannahum fī l-ḥarbi fasharrid bihim man khalfahum laʿallahum yadhakkarūn

8:58

وَإِمَّا تَخَافَنَّ مِن قَوۡمٍ خِیَانَةࣰ فَٱنۢبِذۡ إِلَیۡهِمۡ عَلَىٰ سَوَاۤءٍۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡخَاۤىِٕنِینَ ۝٥٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

And if you fear treachery from any folk, cast [your treaty with them] back to them in a fair manner. God does not love the treacherous.

wa-immā takhāfanna min qawmin khiyānatan fa-inbidh ilayhim ʿalā sawāin inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu l-khāinīn

8:59

وَلَا یَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ سَبَقُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّهُمۡ لَا یُعۡجِزُونَ ۝٥٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Let not those who disbelieve reckon that they shall escape. They can never be beyond [God's] grasp.

walā yaḥsabanna alladhīna kafarū sabaqū innahum lā yuʿ'jizūn

8:60

وَأَعِدُّوا۟ لَهُم مَّا ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُم مِّن قُوَّةࣲ وَمِن رِّبَاطِ ٱلۡخَیۡلِ تُرۡهِبُونَ بِهِۦ عَدُوَّ ٱللَّهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمۡ وَءَاخَرِینَ مِن دُونِهِمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُهُمۡۚ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا۟ مِن شَیۡءࣲ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ یُوَفَّ إِلَیۡكُمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ لَا تُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٠

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Make ready against them whatever force and war mounts you can muster, so that you may strike terror into the enemies of God who are also your own enemies, and others besides them of whom you may be unaware, but of whom God is well aware. Whatever you may spend in God's cause shall be repaid to you in full, and you shall not be wronged.

wa-aʿiddū lahum mā is'taṭaʿtum min quwwatin wamin ribāṭi l-khayli tur'hibūna bihi ʿaduwwa l-lahi waʿaduwwakum waākharīna min dūnihim lā taʿlamūnahumu l-lahu yaʿlamuhum wamā tunfiqū min shayin fī sabīli l-lahi yuwaffa ilaykum wa-antum lā tuẓ'lamūn

8:61

۞ وَإِن جَنَحُوا۟ لِلسَّلۡمِ فَٱجۡنَحۡ لَهَا وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٦١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

If they incline to peace, then incline you to it as well, and place your trust in God. He alone hears all and knows all.

wa-in janaḥū lilssalmi fa-ij'naḥ lahā watawakkal ʿalā l-lahi innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

8:62

وَإِن یُرِیدُوۤا۟ أَن یَخۡدَعُوكَ فَإِنَّ حَسۡبَكَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَیَّدَكَ بِنَصۡرِهِۦ وَبِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٢

Should they seek to deceive you, God is all- sufficient for you. He it is who has strengthened you with His help and rallied the believers round you,

wa-in yurīdū an yakhdaʿūka fa-inna ḥasbaka l-lahu huwa alladhī ayyadaka binaṣrihi wabil-mu'minīn

8:63

وَأَلَّفَ بَیۡنَ قُلُوبِهِمۡۚ لَوۡ أَنفَقۡتَ مَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا مَّاۤ أَلَّفۡتَ بَیۡنَ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٦٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

uniting their hearts. If you were to spend all that is on earth you could not have so united their hearts, but God has united them. He is Mighty and Wise.

wa-allafa bayna qulūbihim law anfaqta mā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan mā allafta bayna qulūbihim walākinna l-laha allafa baynahum innahu ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

8:64

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ حَسۡبُكَ ٱللَّهُ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٤

Prophet, God is enough for you and those of the believers who follow you.

yāayyuhā l-nabiyu ḥasbuka l-lahu wamani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn

8:65

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ حَرِّضِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ عَلَى ٱلۡقِتَالِۚ إِن یَكُن مِّنكُمۡ عِشۡرُونَ صَـٰبِرُونَ یَغۡلِبُوا۟ مِا۟ئَتَیۡنِۚ وَإِن یَكُن مِّنكُم مِّا۟ئَةࣱ یَغۡلِبُوۤا۟ أَلۡفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٦٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Prophet, urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast men among you, they will overcome two hundred, and if there are a hundred of you, they will defeat a thousand of those who disbelieve, for those are devoid of understanding.

yāayyuhā l-nabiyu ḥarriḍi l-mu'minīna ʿalā l-qitāli in yakun minkum ʿish'rūna ṣābirūna yaghlibū mi-atayni wa-in yakun minkum mi-atun yaghlibū alfan mina alladhīna kafarū bi-annahum qawmun lā yafqahūn

8:66

ٱلۡءَـٰنَ خَفَّفَ ٱللَّهُ عَنكُمۡ وَعَلِمَ أَنَّ فِیكُمۡ ضَعۡفࣰاۚ فَإِن یَكُن مِّنكُم مِّا۟ئَةࣱ صَابِرَةࣱ یَغۡلِبُوا۟ مِا۟ئَتَیۡنِۚ وَإِن یَكُن مِّنكُمۡ أَلۡفࣱ یَغۡلِبُوۤا۟ أَلۡفَیۡنِ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝٦٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Now God has lightened your burden, for He knows that you are weak. So, if there are a hundred steadfast men among you, they will overcome two hundred, and if there are a thousand of you they will, by God's will, defeat two thousand. God is with those who are steadfast.

al-āna khaffafa l-lahu ʿankum waʿalima anna fīkum ḍaʿfan fa-in yakun minkum mi-atun ṣābiratun yaghlibū mi-atayni wa-in yakun minkum alfun yaghlibū alfayni bi-idh'ni l-lahi wal-lahu maʿa l-ṣābirīn

8:67

مَا كَانَ لِنَبِیٍّ أَن یَكُونَ لَهُۥۤ أَسۡرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ یُثۡخِنَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ تُرِیدُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱللَّهُ یُرِیدُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٦٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

It does not behove a Prophet to have captives unless he has battled strenuously in the land. You may desire the fleeting gains of this world, but God desires for you the good of the life to come. God is Almighty, Wise.

mā kāna linabiyyin an yakūna lahu asrā ḥattā yuth'khina fī l-arḍi turīdūna ʿaraḍa l-dun'yā wal-lahu yurīdu l-ākhirata wal-lahu ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

8:68

لَّوۡلَا كِتَـٰبࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمۡ فِیمَاۤ أَخَذۡتُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝٦٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Had it not been for a decree from God that had already gone forth, you would have been severely punished for what you have taken.

lawlā kitābun mina l-lahi sabaqa lamassakum fīmā akhadhtum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmu

8:69

فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا غَنِمۡتُمۡ حَلَـٰلࣰا طَیِّبࣰاۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٦٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Enjoy, then, what you have gained, as lawful and good, and remain God-fearing; indeed God is much Forgiving, most Merciful.

fakulū mimmā ghanim'tum ḥalālan ṭayyiban wa-ittaqū l-laha inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

8:70

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ قُل لِّمَن فِیۤ أَیۡدِیكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَسۡرَىٰۤ إِن یَعۡلَمِ ٱللَّهُ فِی قُلُوبِكُمۡ خَیۡرࣰا یُؤۡتِكُمۡ خَیۡرࣰا مِّمَّاۤ أُخِذَ مِنكُمۡ وَیَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٧٠

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Prophet, say to the captives who are in your hands: If God finds goodness in your hearts, He will give you something better than all that has been taken from you, and He will forgive you your sins. God is much Forgiving, Merciful.

yāayyuhā l-nabiyu qul liman fī aydīkum mina l-asrā in yaʿlami l-lahu fī qulūbikum khayran yu'tikum khayran mimmā ukhidha minkum wayaghfir lakum wal-lahu ghafūrun raḥīmu

8:71

وَإِن یُرِیدُوا۟ خِیَانَتَكَ فَقَدۡ خَانُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مِن قَبۡلُ فَأَمۡكَنَ مِنۡهُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمٌ ۝٧١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Should they seek to play false with you, they were previously false to God Himself, but He gave [you] mastery over them. God is All-knowing, Wise.

wa-in yurīdū khiyānataka faqad khānū l-laha min qablu fa-amkana min'hum wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

8:72

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِهِمۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَاوَوا۟ وَّنَصَرُوۤا۟ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءُ بَعۡضࣲۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَمۡ یُهَاجِرُوا۟ مَا لَكُم مِّن وَلَـٰیَتِهِم مِّن شَیۡءٍ حَتَّىٰ یُهَاجِرُوا۟ۚ وَإِنِ ٱسۡتَنصَرُوكُمۡ فِی ٱلدِّینِ فَعَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلنَّصۡرُ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ قَوۡمِۭ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَبَیۡنَهُم مِّیثَـٰقࣱۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِیرࣱ ۝٧٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Those who believe and have migrated and striven hard, with their possessions and their lives, for God's cause, as well as those who give them shelter and support â€” these are friends and protectors of one another. As for those who believe but have not migrated [to join you], you owe no duty of protection to them until they have migrated. Yet, should they appeal to you for support, on grounds of faith, it is your duty to support them, except against a people with whom you have a treaty. God sees all that you do.

inna alladhīna āmanū wahājarū wajāhadū bi-amwālihim wa-anfusihim fī sabīli l-lahi wa-alladhīna āwaw wanaṣarū ulāika baʿḍuhum awliyāu baʿḍin wa-alladhīna āmanū walam yuhājirū mā lakum min walāyatihim min shayin ḥattā yuhājirū wa-ini is'tanṣarūkum fī l-dīni faʿalaykumu l-naṣru illā ʿalā qawmin baynakum wabaynahum mīthāqun wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna baṣīru

8:73

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بَعۡضُهُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءُ بَعۡضٍۚ إِلَّا تَفۡعَلُوهُ تَكُن فِتۡنَةࣱ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَفَسَادࣱ كَبِیرࣱ ۝٧٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

The unbelievers are allies of one another. Unless you do likewise, there will be oppression on earth and much corruption.

wa-alladhīna kafarū baʿḍuhum awliyāu baʿḍin illā tafʿalūhu takun fit'natun fī l-arḍi wafasādun kabīru

8:74

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَاوَوا۟ وَّنَصَرُوۤا۟ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ حَقࣰّاۚ لَّهُم مَّغۡفِرَةࣱ وَرِزۡقࣱ كَرِیمࣱ ۝٧٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Those who believe and have migrated and striven hard for God's cause, as well as those who give them shelter and support are indeed the true believers. Forgiveness of sins, and most generous provisions await them.

wa-alladhīna āmanū wahājarū wajāhadū fī sabīli l-lahi wa-alladhīna āwaw wanaṣarū ulāika humu l-mu'minūna ḥaqqan lahum maghfiratun wariz'qun karīmu

8:75

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدُ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ مَعَكُمۡ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مِنكُمۡۚ وَأُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِ بَعۡضُهُمۡ أَوۡلَىٰ بِبَعۡضࣲ فِی كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمُۢ ۝٧٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

And those who subsequently come to believe, and migrate and strive hard with you [for God's cause] shall also belong to you. Those who are bound by ties of blood have the first claim on one another in accordance with God's decree. God has full knowledge of everything.

wa-alladhīna āmanū min baʿdu wahājarū wajāhadū maʿakum fa-ulāika minkum wa-ulū l-arḥāmi baʿḍuhum awlā bibaʿḍin fī kitābi l-lahi inna l-laha bikulli shayin ʿalīmu
