The Criterion, The Standard — Verse 6

What the Disbelievers said about the Qur'an Allah tells us about the foolishness of the disbelievers' ignorant minds, when they said about the Qur'an: إِنْ هَـذَا إِلاَّ إِفْكٌ (This is nothing but a lie), meaning an untruth. افْتَرَاهُ (that he has invented,) meaning the Prophet . وَأَعَانَهُ عَلَيْهِ قَوْمٌ ءَاخَرُونَ (and others have helped him in it.) means, he asked other people to help him compile it. So Allah said: فَقَدْ جَآءُوا ظُلْماً وَزُوراً (In fact, they have produced an unjust wrong and a lie.) meaning, they are the ones who are telling a lie, and they know that it is false, for their own souls know that what they are claiming is not true. وَقَالُواْ أَسَـطِيرُ الاٌّوَّلِينَ اكْتَتَبَهَا (And they say: "Tales of the ancients which he has written down...") meaning, the ancients wrote them down, and he has copied it. فَهِىَ تُمْلَى عَلَيْهِ (and they are dictated to him) means, they are read or recited to him. بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً (morning and afternoon. ) at the beginning and end of the day. Because this idea is so foolish and is so patently false, everyone knows that it is not true. It is known through Mutawatir reports and is a common fact that Muhammad ﷺ the Messenger of Allah never learned to read or write, either at the beginning or the end of his life. He grew up among them for approximately forty years, from the time he was born until the time when his mission began. They knew all about him, and about his honest and sound character and how he would never lie or do anything immoral or bad. They even used to call him Al-Amin (the Trustworthy One) from a young age, until his mission began, because they saw how truthful and honest he was. When Allah honored him with that which He honored him, they declared their enmity towards him and came up with all these accusations which any reasonable person would know he was innocent of. They were not sure what to accuse him of. Sometimes they said that he was a sorcerer, at other times they would say he was a poet, or crazy, or a liar. So Allah said: انْظُرْ كَيْفَ ضَرَبُواْ لَكَ الاٌّمْثَالَ فَضَلُّواْ فَلاَ يَسْتَطِيعْونَ سَبِيلاً (See what examples they have put forward for you. So they have gone astray, and never can they find a way.) (17:48) In response to their stubbornness, Allah says here: قُلْ أَنزَلَهُ الَّذِى يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ (Say: "It has been sent down by Him Who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth".) meaning, He has revealed the Qur'an which includes true information about the earlier and later generations, information which concurs with the realities of the past and future. الَّذِى يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ (Who knows the secret) means, Allah is the One Who knows the unseen in the heavens and on the earth; He knows their secrets just as He knows what is visible therein. إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفُوراً رَّحِيماً (Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.) This is an invitation to them to repent and turn back to Allah, telling them that His mercy is vast and His patience is immense. Whoever repents to Him, He accepts his repentance. Despite all their lies, immorality, falsehood, disbelief and stubbornness, and saying what they said about the Messenger and the Qur'an, He still invites them to repent and give up their sin, and to come to Islam and true guidance. This is like the Ayat: لَّقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِينَ قَالُواْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ثَـلِثُ ثَلَـثَةٍ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَـهٍ إِلاَّ إِلَـهٌ وَحِدٌ وَإِن لَّمْ يَنتَهُواْ عَمَّا يَقُولُونَ لَيَمَسَّنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ - أَفَلاَ يَتُوبُونَ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَهُ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (Surely, disbelievers are those who said: "Allah is the third of the three." But there is no god but One God. And if they cease not from what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall on the disbelievers among them. Will they not turn with repentance to Allah and ask His forgiveness For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.) (5:73-74) إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَتَنُواْ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَـتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُواْ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ الْحَرِيقِ (Verily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women, and then do not turn in repentance, then they will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the burning Fire.) (85:10) Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: "Look at this kindness and generosity! They killed His friends and He is calling them to repentance and mercy."

Say ‘It has been revealed by Him Who knows the secret the Unseen of the heavens and the earth. Truly He is ever Forgiving of believers Merciful’ to them.

قل - أيها الرسول - لهؤلاء الكفار: إن الذي أنزل القرآن هو الله الذي أحاط علمه بما في السموات والأرض، إنه كان غفورًا لمن تاب من الذنوب والمعاصي، رحيمًا بهم حيث لم يعاجلهم بالعقوبة.

وقال تعالى في جواب ما عاندوا ههنا وافتروا "قل أنزله الذي يعلم السر في السموات والأرض" الآية أي أنزل القرآن المشتمل على أخبار الأولين والآخرين إخبارا حقا صدقا مطابقا للواقع في الخارج ماضيا ومستقبلا "الذي يعلم السر" أي الله الذي يعلم غيب السموات والأرض ويعلم السرائر كعلمه بالظواهر وقوله تعالى "إنه كان غفورا رحيما" دعاء لهم إلى التوبة والإنابة وإخبار لهم بأن رحمته واسعة وأن حلمه عظيم مع أن من تاب إليه تاب عليه فهؤلاء مع كذبهم وافترائهم وفجورهم وبهتانهم وكفرهم وعنادهم وقولهم عن الرسول والقرآن ما قالوا يدعوهم إلى التوبة والإقلاع عما هم فيه إلى الإسلام والهدى كما قال تعالى "لقد كفر الذين قالوا إن الله ثالث ثلاثة وما من إله إلا إله واحد وإن لم ينتهوا عما يقولون ليمسن الذين كفروا منهم عذاب أليم أفلا يتوبون إلى الله ويستغفرونه والله غفور رحيم" وقال تعالى "إن الذين فتنوا المؤمنين والمؤمنات ثم لم يتوبوا فلهم عذاب جهنم ولهم عذاب الحريق" قال الحسن البصري: انظروا إلى هذا الكرم والجود قتلوا أولياءه وهو يدعوهم إلى التوبة والرحمة.

وقد أمر الله - تعالى - رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالرد عليهم بما يخرس ألسنتهم فقال : ( قُلْ أَنزَلَهُ الذي يَعْلَمُ السر فِي السماوات والأرض . . ) .أى : قل - أيها الرسول الكريم - لهؤلاء الذين زعموا أن القرآن أساطير الأولين ، وأنك افتريته من عند نفسك ، وأعانك على هذا الافتراء قوم آخرون . . . . قل لهم : كذبتم أشنع الكذب وأقبحه ، فأنتم أول من يعلم بأن هذاب القرآن له من الحلاوة والطلاوة ، وله من حسن التأثير ما يجعله - باعتراف - زعمائكم ليس من كلام البشر وإنما الذى أنزله علىَّ هو الله - تعالى - الذى يعلم السر فى السموات والأرض ، أى : يعلم ما خفى فيها ويعلم الأسرار جميعها فضلا عن الظواهر .قال الآلوسى : " قل " لهم ردا عليهم وتحقيقا للحق : أنزله الله - تعالى - الذى لا يعزب عن علمه شىء من الأشياء ، وأودع فيه فنون الحكم والأسرار على وجه بديع ، لا تحوم حوله الأفهام ، حيث أعجزكم قاطبة بفصاحته وبلاغته ، وأخبركم بمغيبات مستقبلة ، وأمور مكنونة ، لا يهتدى إليها ولا يوقف - إلا بتوفيق الله - تعالى - العليم الخبير عليها . . .ثم ختم - سبحانه - الآية بما يفتح باب التوبة للتائبين ، وبما يحرضهم على الإيمان والطاعة لله رب العالمين فقال - تعالى - : ( إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفُوراً رَّحِيماً ) .أى : إنه - سبحانه - واسع المغفرة والرحمة ، لمن ترك الكفر وعاد إلى الإيمان ، وترك العصيان وعاد إلى الطاعة .قال الإمام ابن كثير : وقوله : ( إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفُوراً رَّحِيماً ) دعاء لهم إلى التوبة والإنابة ، وإخبار بأن رحمته واسعة ، وأن حلمه عظيم وأن من تاب إليه تاب عليه ، فهؤلاء مع كذبهم . وافترائهم . وفجورهم . وبهتهم . وقولهم عن الرسول والقرآن ما قالوا ، يدعوهم - سبحانه - إلى التوبة والإقلاع عما هم عليه من كفر إلى الإسلام والهدى . كما قال - تعالى - : ( لَّقَدْ كَفَرَ الذين قالوا إِنَّ الله ثَالِثُ ثَلاَثَةٍ وَمَا مِنْ إله إِلاَّ إله وَاحِدٌ وَإِن لَّمْ يَنتَهُواْ عَمَّا يَقُولُونَ لَيَمَسَّنَّ الذين كَفَرُواْ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ أَفَلاَ يَتُوبُونَ إلى الله وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَهُ والله غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ) قال الحسن البصرى : انظروا إلى هذا الكرم والجود . قتلوا أولياءه وهو يدعوهم إلى التوبة .

وقوله: ( قُلْ أَنـزلَهُ الَّذِي يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضِ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: قل يا محمد لهؤلاء المكذّبين بآيات الله من مشركي قومك: ما الأمر كما تقولون من أن هذا القرآن أساطير الأولين، وأن محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم افتراه وأعانه عليه قوم آخرون, بل هو الحقّ, أنـزله الربّ الذي يعلم سرّ من في السماوات ومن في الأرض, ولا يخفى عليه شيء, ومحصي ذلك على خلقه, ومجازيهم بما عزمت عليه قلوبهم، وأضمروه في نفوسهم ( إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا ) يقول: إنه لم يزل يصفح عن خلقه ويرحمهم, فيتفضل عليهم بعفوه, يقول: فلأن ذلك من عادته في خلقه, يمهلكم أيها القائلون ما قلتم من الإفك، والفاعلون ما فعلتم من الكفر.وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل.* ذكر من قال ذلك:حدثنا القاسم, قال: ثنا الحسين, قال: ثني حجاج, عن ابن جُرَيج ( قُلْ أَنـزلَهُ الَّذِي يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضِ ) قال: ما يسرّ أهل الأرض وأهل السماء.

قال الله - عز وجل - ردا عليهم : ( قل أنزله ) يعني القرآن ، ( الذي يعلم السر ) يعني الغيب ، ( في السماوات والأرض إنه كان غفورا رحيما )

قُلْ أَنْزَلَهُ الَّذِي يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا (6)لقن الله رسوله الجواب لرد بهتان القائلين إن هذا القرآن إلا إفك ، وإنه أساطير الأولين ، بأنه أنزله الله على رسوله .وعبر عن منزل القرآن بطريق الموصول لما تقتضيه الصلة من استشهاد الرسول الله على ما في سره لأن الله يعلم كل سر في كل مكان .فجملة الصلة مستعملة في لازم الفائدة وهو كون المتكلم ، أي الرسول ، عالماً بذلك . وفي ذلك كناية عن مراقبته الله فيما يبلغه عنه . وفي ذلك إيقاظ لهم بأن يتدبروا في هذا الذي زعموه إفكاً أو أساطير الأولين ليظهر لهم اشتماله على الحقائق الناصعة التي لا يحيط بها إلا الله الذي يعلم السر ، فيُوقِنُوا أن القرآن لا يكون إلا من إنزاله ، وليعلموا براءة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم من الاستعانة بمن زعموهم يعينونه .والتعريف في { السر } تعريف الجنس يستغرق كل سر ، ومنه إسرار الطاعنين في القرآن عن مكابرة وبهتان ، أي يعلم أنهم يقولون في القرآن ما لا يعتقدونه ظلماً وزوراً منهم ، وبهذا يعلم موقع جملة : { إنه كان غفوراً رحيماً } ترغيباً لهم في الإقلاع عن هذه المكابرة وفي اتباع دين الحق ليغفر الله لهم ويرحمهم ، وذلك تعريض بأنهم إن لم يقلعوا ويتوبوا حَق عليهم الغضب والنقمة .

فلذلك رد عليهم ذلك بقوله: { قُلْ أَنْزَلَهُ الَّذِي يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ْ} أي: أنزله من أحاط علمه بما في السماوات وما في الأرض، من الغيب والشهادة والجهر والسر كقوله: { وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنْزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ عَلَى قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنْذِرِينَ ْ} ووجه إقامة الحجة عليهم أن الذي أنزله، هو المحيط علمه بكل شيء، فيستحيل ويمتنع أن يقول مخلوق ويتقول عليه هذا القرآن، ويقول: هو من عند الله وما هو من عنده ويستحل دماء من خالفه وأموالهم، ويزعم أن الله قال له ذلك، والله يعلم كل شيء ومع ذلك فهو يؤيده وينصره على أعدائه، ويمكنه من رقابهم وبلادهم فلا يمكن أحدا أن ينكر هذا القرآن، إلا بعد إنكار علم الله، وهذا لا تقول به طائفة من بني آدم سوى الفلاسفة الدهرية. وأيضا فإن ذكر علمه تعالى العام ينبههم: ويحضهم على تدبر القرآن، وأنهم لو تدبروا لرأوا فيه من علمه وأحكامه ما يدل دلالة قاطعة على أنه لا يكون إلا من عالم الغيب والشهادة، ومع إنكارهم للتوحيد والرسالة من لطف الله بهم، أنه لم يدعهم وظلمهم بل دعاهم إلى التوبة والإنابة إليه ووعدهم بالمغفرة والرحمة، إن هم تابوا ورجعوا فقال: { إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفُورًا ْ} أي: وصفه المغفرة لأهل الجرائم والذنوب، إذا فعلوا أسباب المغفرة وهي الرجوع عن معاصيه والتوبة منها. { رَحِيمًا ْ} بهم حيث لم يعاجلهم بالعقوبة وقد فعلوا مقتضاها، وحيث قبل توبتهم بعد المعاصي وحيث محا ما سلف من سيئاتهم وحيث قبل حسناتهم وحيث أعاد الراجع إليه بعد شروده والمقبل عليه بعد إعراضه إلى حالة المطيعين المنيبين إليه.

قوله تعالى : قل أنزله الذي يعلم السر في السماوات والأرض أي قل يا محمد أنزل هذا القرآن الذي يعلم السر ، فهو عالم الغيب ، فلا يحتاج إلى معلم . وذكر السر دون الجهر ; لأنه من علم السر فهو في الجهر أعلم . ولو كان القرآن مأخوذا من أهل الكتاب وغيرهم [ ص: 6 ] لما زاد عليها ، وقد جاء بفنون تخرج عنها ، فليس مأخوذا منها . وأيضا ولو كان مأخوذا من هؤلاء لتمكن المشركون منه أيضا كما تمكن محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ; فهلا عارضوه ؟ فبطل اعتراضهم من كل وجه . إنه كان غفورا رحيما يريد غفورا لأوليائه رحيما بهم .

Those who denied the truth used to denigrate the Quran as a false testament, but in fact the target of their allegation was the Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet appeared to them as an ordinary man. They were unable to understand how an ordinary man could be the possessor of an extraordinary Book. The Quran touches upon various topics of a historical, psychological and social nature, etc., but no factual error has ever been pointed out in it. This proves that the Quran was authored by a Being who is aware of the secrets of the universe to the fullest extent. Had it not been so, the Quran also would have been full of mistakes—as are found in other man-made books. This fact in itself is the greatest argument in favour of the Quran being a Book of God. Those who make baseless statements against the Quran, are indulging in undue bravado. Such people will definitely be seized upon by God. However, if they come back to the right path, it is not God’s way to take revenge after their repentance. God looks at the individual’s present and not his past.

Commentary From this point onward the objections raised by infidels and polytheists against the Holy Qur'an and the prophethood of the Holy Prophet ﷺ are related together with the answers to those objections. The first objection was that the Qur'an was not a revealed book from Allah Ta’ ala, but has been compiled from the old stories and narrations by the Jews and Christians which have been reduced into writing by the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ ، since he himself was illiterate and could not write. And because he could not read or write, he would get them read out to him day and night, so that he could remember them by heart, then he would repeat them before people and claim that he had received that revelation from Allah Ta’ ala. The answer to this objection was given by the Holy Qur’ an قُلْ أَنزَلَهُ الَّذِي يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ‌ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْ‌ضِ , that is (Say, "It is sent down by the One who knows the secret in the heavens and the earth - 25:6). The essence of this answer is that the Qur'an itself is an evidence to the fact that it is the Divine message from Him who is Omniscient and who knows fully well all the secrets of the Heavens and the earth. This is why Qur'an is a miraculous Message, and the whole world is challenged to bring out a Surah or even a verse to match it, if its divine origin is refused. This was a challenge to a people - the Arabs - who were well known for their literary proficiency and art of expression, and for whom composition of a piece of literature was not a problem. But they too did not dare to attempt to compose something similar to Qur’ an. Although they were willing to sacrifice all their material wealth for opposing the Holy Prophet ﷺ in his mission, so much so that they were willing to sacrifice even their children and their own lives to counter the Holy Prophet ﷺ mission and message, but they dared not attempt to compose a passage similar to a Surah of the Qur'an. This is a clear proof of the fact that it is not a work of a human being. Otherwise other people could also have composed passages similar to Qur'an. Therefore, it is definitely the revelation from Allah Ta ala. Apart from the beauty of expression and language, the Book also excels in its meanings. The multifarious subjects it covers can only be dealt by One who knows everything whether hidden or exposed. This subject has been dealt with in detail in the first volume of Ma’ ariful Qur'an.

(Say) to them, O Muhammad: (He Who knoweth the secret of the heavens and the earth has revealed it) i.e. He sent Gabriel with the Qur'an. (Lo! He ever is Forgiving) He forgives those who repent among them, (Merciful) He shows mercy towards those who die in a state of repentance.
