1 The Calamity

الْقَارِعَةُ

The striking Hour (Qari’ah, the Day of Calamity)!

مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

What is the striking Hour?

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

What will make you know what the striking Hour is?

Wama adraka ma alqariAAatu

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ

It is the Day when mankind will be like scattered moths

Yawma yakoonu alnnasu kaalfarashi almabthoothi

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ

and the mountains will be like carded wool.

Watakoonu aljibalu kaalAAihni almanfooshi

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

then as for the one whose balance (of good deeds) will be heavy,

Faamma man thaqulat mawazeenuhu

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ

he will reside in a pleasant life (Paradise).

Fahuwa fee AAeeshatin radiyatin

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

But as for the one whose balance (of good deeds) will be light,

Waamma man khaffat mawazeenuhu

فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ

he will abode in hell (Hawiyah);

Faommuhu hawiyatun

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ

and what will make you know what it (Hawiyah) is?

Wama adraka ma hiyah

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ

(It is) a blazing fire

Narun hamiyatun
