1 The Calamity

الْقَارِعَةُ

The ‘Calamity’!

مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

What is the ‘Calamity’?

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

What would make you aware of what the ‘Calamity’ might be?

Wama adraka ma alqariAAatu

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ

It is the day when the people will be like scattered moths

Yawma yakoonu alnnasu kaalfarashi almabthoothi

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ

And the mountains like fluffed wool.

Watakoonu aljibalu kaalAAihni almanfooshi

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

As for the one whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales

Faamma man thaqulat mawazeenuhu

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ

Will have pleasant living.

Fahuwa fee AAeeshatin radiyatin

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

But the one whose deeds weigh light in the scales,

Waamma man khaffat mawazeenuhu

فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ

‘Abyss’ will be his eternal home.

Faommuhu hawiyatun

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ

What would make you aware of what ‘Abyss’ might be?

Wama adraka ma hiyah

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ

It is Raging Fire!
