1 The Calamity

الْقَارِعَةُ

مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

What is the striking

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

And what shall make thee to understand how terrible the striking will be

Wama adraka ma alqariAAatu

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ

On that day men shall be like moths scattered abroad

Yawma yakoonu alnnasu kaalfarashi almabthoothi

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ

and the mountains shall become like carded wool of various colours driven by the wind

Watakoonu aljibalu kaalAAihni almanfooshi

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

Moreover he whose balance shall be heavy with good works

Faamma man thaqulat mawazeenuhu

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ

shall lead a pleasing life

Fahuwa fee AAeeshatin radiyatin

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

But as to him whose balance shall be light

Waamma man khaffat mawazeenuhu

فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ

his dwelling shall be the pit of hell

Faommuhu hawiyatun

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ

What shall make thee to understand how frightful the pit of hell is

Wama adraka ma hiyah

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ

It is a burning fire

Narun hamiyatun
