1 The Calamity

الْقَارِعَةُ

The loud thunder strike.

مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

What is the loud thunder strike?

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

And what do you know about what the loud thunder strike is?

Wama adraka ma alqariAAatu

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ

The day when the humankind will be like the moths all scattered.

Yawma yakoonu alnnasu kaalfarashi almabthoothi

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ

And the mountains will be like the tufts of fluffy wool.

Watakoonu aljibalu kaalAAihni almanfooshi

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

Then as for him whose balance [of good deeds] will get heavy,

Faamma man thaqulat mawazeenuhu

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ

he therefore will be in a life well pleasing.

Fahuwa fee AAeeshatin radiyatin

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

But as for him whose balance [of deeds] will get light,

Waamma man khaffat mawazeenuhu

فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ

so his mother will be the bottomless pit.

Faommuhu hawiyatun

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ

And what do you know about what she is?

Wama adraka ma hiyah

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ

It is a fire most incandescent.

Narun hamiyatun
