1 Revelation is a Divine Favour

وَٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢

(God) swear by this book which explains its subject matter so clearly

wal-kitābi l-mubīn

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَ ٰنًا عَرَبِیࣰّا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣

This Qur’an is revealed in Arabic to you [who were expecting it in another language as a sign of miracle] so that you read it in your own maternal language and understand it

innā jaʿalnāhu qur'ānan ʿarabiyyan laʿallakum taʿqilūn

وَإِنَّهُۥ فِیۤ أُمِّ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَدَیۡنَا لَعَلِیٌّ حَكِیمٌ ۝٤

This book, which is preserved in the heaven by God almighty Himself, is the source of all the scriptures and God revealed literatures; it is the most honorable book and full of wisdom

wa-innahu fī ummi l-kitābi ladaynā laʿaliyyun ḥakīmu

أَفَنَضۡرِبُ عَنكُمُ ٱلذِّكۡرَ صَفۡحًا أَن كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا مُّسۡرِفِینَ ۝٥

You, the sinners, definitely do not deserve to receive this book. It is only in account of God’s mercy that this message is sent to you

afanaḍribu ʿankumu l-dhik'ra ṣafḥan an kuntum qawman mus'rifīn

وَكَمۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن نَّبِیࣲّ فِی ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٦

Before Mohammad, God sent many prophets to their own people. …

wakam arsalnā min nabiyyin fī l-awalīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن نَّبِیٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٧

They were all mocked at

wamā yatīhim min nabiyyin illā kānū bihi yastahziūn

فَأَهۡلَكۡنَاۤ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشࣰا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٨

Beware; I (God) severely punished those people and they were much stronger than you to set an example

fa-ahlaknā ashadda min'hum baṭshan wamaḍā mathalu l-awalīn

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَیَقُولُنَّ خَلَقَهُنَّ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٩

If you asked them [the Arabs], “Who has created the heavens and the earth?”, they will reply, “The Almighty, the One Who knows everything.”

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa layaqūlunna khalaqahunna l-ʿazīzu l-ʿalīm

ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَهۡدࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمۡ فِیهَا سُبُلࣰا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٠

God is the One Who made this planet hospitable for you with paths in it to lead you to your destination

alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa mahdan wajaʿala lakum fīhā subulan laʿallakum tahtadūn

وَٱلَّذِی نَزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءَۢ بِقَدَرࣲ فَأَنشَرۡنَا بِهِۦ بَلۡدَةࣰ مَّیۡتࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ تُخۡرَجُونَ ۝١١

God is the One Who sends down water from the sky in right amount to bring life to dead lands. For the same token that the dead land is resurrected [in front of your eyes], you too will be resurrected

wa-alladhī nazzala mina l-samāi māan biqadarin fa-ansharnā bihi baldatan maytan kadhālika tukh'rajūn

وَٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَزۡوَ ٰجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ مَا تَرۡكَبُونَ ۝١٢

God is the One Who created every living species in pairs. He has created ships [by giving creative ability to you] and has made some animals subservient to you so that you may roam the earth

wa-alladhī khalaqa l-azwāja kullahā wajaʿala lakum mina l-ful'ki wal-anʿāmi mā tarkabūn

لِتَسۡتَوُۥا۟ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِۦ ثُمَّ تَذۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ رَبِّكُمۡ إِذَا ٱسۡتَوَیۡتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ وَتَقُولُوا۟ سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقۡرِنِینَ ۝١٣

As you use your vehicles, you should express your gratitude by saying: “Glory to the Lord Who subjected them to us; otherwise, we could not have controlled them ourselves.”

litastawū ʿalā ẓuhūrihi thumma tadhkurū niʿ'mata rabbikum idhā is'tawaytum ʿalayhi wataqūlū sub'ḥāna alladhī sakhara lanā hādhā wamā kunnā lahu muq'rinīn

وَإِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ ۝١٤

[then continue saying:] “Indeed one Day we will be returned to meet our Lord.”

wa-innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn

وَجَعَلُوا۟ لَهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ جُزۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَكَفُورࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥

[In spit of knowing and recognizing all these favors,] they dare to raise God’s own creation [hand made idols, the prophets, angles, etc.] to heaven and deify it. Indeed man is the most unappreciative

wajaʿalū lahu min ʿibādihi juz'an inna l-insāna lakafūrun mubīnu

2 Polytheism condemned

أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ مِمَّا یَخۡلُقُ بَنَاتࣲ وَأَصۡفَىٰكُم بِٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٦

[They say] God has chosen females (whom He has created at first place) as His daughters while bless them with sons [as they consider having a female child is a matter of sham!]

ami ittakhadha mimmā yakhluqu banātin wa-aṣfākum bil-banīn

وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مَثَلࣰا ظَلَّ وَجۡهُهُۥ مُسۡوَدࣰّا وَهُوَ كَظِیمٌ ۝١٧

When any of them is given the news of being blessed by a daughter, his face turns black in grief

wa-idhā bushira aḥaduhum bimā ḍaraba lilrraḥmāni mathalan ẓalla wajhuhu mus'waddan wahuwa kaẓīmu

أَوَ مَن یُنَشَّؤُا۟ فِی ٱلۡحِلۡیَةِ وَهُوَ فِی ٱلۡخِصَامِ غَیۡرُ مُبِینࣲ ۝١٨

How dare they to assign a baby girl, wrapped up in ornaments and unable even to talk, as God’s daughter

awaman yunasha-u fī l-ḥil'yati wahuwa fī l-khiṣāmi ghayru mubīni

وَجَعَلُوا۟ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عِبَـٰدُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ إِنَـٰثًاۚ أَشَهِدُوا۟ خَلۡقَهُمۡۚ سَتُكۡتَبُ شَهَـٰدَتُهُمۡ وَیُسۡءَلُونَ ۝١٩

The disbelievers say that the Angles (who are created by and are the servants of the Most Gracious) are female! Have their witnessed their creation [for committing such a blasphemy]? Know that their saying is recorded and will be used against them

wajaʿalū l-malāikata alladhīna hum ʿibādu l-raḥmāni ināthan ashahidū khalqahum satuk'tabu shahādatuhum wayus'alūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ مَا عَبَدۡنَـٰهُمۗ مَّا لَهُم بِذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَخۡرُصُونَ ۝٢٠

The disbelievers say: “If the Most Merciful (God) had not willed, we would have never been able to worship them (the angles)! These are baseless arguments. They do not know what they are talking about [otherwise every crime can be justified according to this argument.]

waqālū law shāa l-raḥmānu mā ʿabadnāhum mā lahum bidhālika min ʿil'min in hum illā yakhruṣūn

أَمۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ كِتَـٰبࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ فَهُم بِهِۦ مُسۡتَمۡسِكُونَ ۝٢١

If they have a book of mine [source of reference] to justify their acts, let them bring it up [This indicates that morality of each society depends on its book of laws and what book of laws superior than the one of God]

am ātaynāhum kitāban min qablihi fahum bihi mus'tamsikūn

بَلۡ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا عَلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٢٢

Their only argument is, “We follow the footsteps of our forefathers [even if they are wrong.]”

bal qālū innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muh'tadūn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ مَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِی قَرۡیَةࣲ مِّن نَّذِیرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَاۤ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا عَلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم مُّقۡتَدُونَ ۝٢٣

In the past too, whenever I (God) sent a Warner to a nation their leaders [whose income depended upon the existing unjust order] would say: “We follow the footsteps of our forefathers.”

wakadhālika mā arsalnā min qablika fī qaryatin min nadhīrin illā qāla mut'rafūhā innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muq'tadūn

۞ قَـٰلَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِأَهۡدَىٰ مِمَّا وَجَدتُّمۡ عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَكُمۡۖ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا بِمَاۤ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٢٤

Every Prophet would ask, “What if I guide you to a better path than the footsteps of your forefathers?” They would simply reply: “We do not care about your way!”

qāla awalaw ji'tukum bi-ahdā mimmā wajadttum ʿalayhi ābāakum qālū innā bimā ur'sil'tum bihi kāfirūn

فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٢٥

In consequence, I took vengeance on them. See what the destiny of the rejecters of the Truth was

fa-intaqamnā min'hum fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīn

3 Allah's Choice of a Prophet

وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنَّنِی بَرَاۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٦

As to Abraham, he said to his father and his people: “I do not have anything to do with what you worship.”

wa-idh qāla ib'rāhīmu li-abīhi waqawmihi innanī barāon mimmā taʿbudūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِی فَطَرَنِی فَإِنَّهُۥ سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٢٧

“I worship only the One Who created me as He is the One Who can guide me.”

illā alladhī faṭaranī fa-innahu sayahdīn

وَجَعَلَهَا كَلِمَةَۢ بَاقِیَةࣰ فِی عَقِبِهِۦ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٢٨

Abraham left a slogan [only God is worthy of worship] behind so that the generations to come may find guidance by following it

wajaʿalahā kalimatan bāqiyatan fī ʿaqibihi laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

بَلۡ مَتَّعۡتُ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ وَءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَرَسُولࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٢٩

Although these people [in Arabian Peninsula] turned away from Abraham’s path, and followed their forefathers, I (God) sustained them until I sent them the Truth through a clarifying messenger (Mohammad)

bal mattaʿtu hāulāi waābāahum ḥattā jāahumu l-ḥaqu warasūlun mubīnu

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحۡرࣱ وَإِنَّا بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٣٠

But when the Truth was revealed to them they said: “This is sorcery and we reject it.”

walammā jāahumu l-ḥaqu qālū hādhā siḥ'run wa-innā bihi kāfirūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡقَرۡیَتَیۡنِ عَظِیمٍ ۝٣١

Their objection was: “Why this Qur’an is not revealed to a “great” man of our two main cities?”

waqālū lawlā nuzzila hādhā l-qur'ānu ʿalā rajulin mina l-qaryatayni ʿaẓīmi

أَهُمۡ یَقۡسِمُونَ رَحۡمَتَ رَبِّكَۚ نَحۡنُ قَسَمۡنَا بَیۡنَهُم مَّعِیشَتَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَرَفَعۡنَا بَعۡضَهُمۡ فَوۡقَ بَعۡضࣲ دَرَجَـٰتࣲ لِّیَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُهُم بَعۡضࣰا سُخۡرِیࣰّاۗ وَرَحۡمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَیۡرࣱ مِّمَّا یَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٣٢

Since when do they decide whom shall God assign as His Prophet? Do they not know that it is God Who has distributed among them whatever they own, giving some superiority in rank so that they themselves help each other? Know that your Lord’s mercy (prophet hood) worth much more than the wealth of your leaders [which have made them so “great” in your eyes.]

ahum yaqsimūna raḥmata rabbika naḥnu qasamnā baynahum maʿīshatahum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā warafaʿnā baʿḍahum fawqa baʿḍin darajātin liyattakhidha baʿḍuhum baʿḍan sukh'riyyan waraḥmatu rabbika khayrun mimmā yajmaʿūn

وَلَوۡلَاۤ أَن یَكُونَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ لَّجَعَلۡنَا لِمَن یَكۡفُرُ بِٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ لِبُیُوتِهِمۡ سُقُفࣰا مِّن فِضَّةࣲ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَیۡهَا یَظۡهَرُونَ ۝٣٣

Had there been no danger of all human beings inclined toward unbelief, I (God) would have given every disbeliever a house with roofs of silver and gold and stairways by which they go to upper levels

walawlā an yakūna l-nāsu ummatan wāḥidatan lajaʿalnā liman yakfuru bil-raḥmāni libuyūtihim suqufan min fiḍḍatin wamaʿārija ʿalayhā yaẓharūn

وَلِبُیُوتِهِمۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبࣰا وَسُرُرًا عَلَیۡهَا یَتَّكِءُونَ ۝٣٤

Their mansions would have had golden doors and luxurious furnishings

walibuyūtihim abwāban wasururan ʿalayhā yattakiūn

وَزُخۡرُفࣰاۚ وَإِن كُلُّ ذَ ٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣٥

I would have also given them adornments of precious metals and stones. But all these [that man considers as the supreme achievement in life] are temporary materials of this lowly world life. Whatever is in reserve for the righteous ones, Hereafter, is much better [than the ultimate achievement in materialistic life.]

wazukh'rufan wa-in kullu dhālika lammā matāʿu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wal-ākhiratu ʿinda rabbika lil'muttaqīn

4 Opposition to Truth is punished

وَمَن یَعۡشُ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ نُقَیِّضۡ لَهُۥ شَیۡطَـٰنࣰا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِینࣱ ۝٣٦

*Whoever disregards the message of God, I (God) will assign a Satan to be his companion

waman yaʿshu ʿan dhik'ri l-raḥmāni nuqayyiḍ lahu shayṭānan fahuwa lahu qarīnu

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَیَصُدُّونَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٣٧

These satanic companions will take them further away from the Lord’s Guidance while giving them the impression that only they are right

wa-innahum layaṣuddūnahum ʿani l-sabīli wayaḥsabūna annahum muh'tadūn

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَنَا قَالَ یَـٰلَیۡتَ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكَ بُعۡدَ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقَیۡنِ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡقَرِینُ ۝٣٨

When such a person would find himself in My (God’s) presence, he would say to his companion: “I wish you were half the world far away from me. What an evil companion you were to me.”

ḥattā idhā jāanā qāla yālayta baynī wabaynaka buʿ'da l-mashriqayni fabi'sa l-qarīn

وَلَن یَنفَعَكُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ إِذ ظَّلَمۡتُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٩

It will not be a consolation to you on that day to see that your satanic companion is being sent to Hell as you too will end up there

walan yanfaʿakumu l-yawma idh ẓalamtum annakum fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn

أَفَأَنتَ تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ أَوۡ تَهۡدِی ٱلۡعُمۡیَ وَمَن كَانَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٤٠

Can you make the deaf to listen to the guidance? Ca you show the way to the blind or those who are totally lost? [so do not waste your time on them.]

afa-anta tus'miʿu l-ṣuma aw tahdī l-ʿum'ya waman kāna fī ḍalālin mubīni

فَإِمَّا نَذۡهَبَنَّ بِكَ فَإِنَّا مِنۡهُم مُّنتَقِمُونَ ۝٤١

Whether you (Mohammad) live long enough to see it or not [as the disbelievers were planning to kill Mohammad], I (God) will surely punish them

fa-immā nadhhabanna bika fa-innā min'hum muntaqimūn

أَوۡ نُرِیَنَّكَ ٱلَّذِی وَعَدۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَإِنَّا عَلَیۡهِم مُّقۡتَدِرُونَ ۝٤٢

I may let you see [if I decide to let you live,] the infliction of the punishment that I have promised for them. Indeed I have full control over the disbelievers

aw nuriyannaka alladhī waʿadnāhum fa-innā ʿalayhim muq'tadirūn

فَٱسۡتَمۡسِكۡ بِٱلَّذِیۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٤٣

Therefore, stick with the book (Qur’an) and go on doing your mission; [for you this pleasure is enough that] You are on the right path

fa-is'tamsik bi-alladhī ūḥiya ilayka innaka ʿalā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذِكۡرࣱ لَّكَ وَلِقَوۡمِكَۖ وَسَوۡفَ تُسۡءَلُونَ ۝٤٤

The fact of the matter is that you (Mohammad) and your nation are chosen to be honored with the revelation of this book. Know that you will be judged by this book (Qur’an)

wa-innahu ladhik'run laka waliqawmika wasawfa tus'alūn

وَسۡءَلۡ مَنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَاۤ أَجَعَلۡنَا مِن دُونِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ءَالِهَةࣰ یُعۡبَدُونَ ۝٤٥

Refer to the previous Prophet’s teachings: Did anyone of them teach that an entity apart from the Lord should be worshipped

wasal man arsalnā min qablika min rusulinā ajaʿalnā min dūni l-raḥmāni ālihatan yuʿ'badūn

5 Pharaoh's Opposition to Moses

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ فَقَالَ إِنِّی رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٦

[As an example of the previous Prophet’s teaching] I (God) went Moses with great miracles [as a proof of his Prophet hood] to Pharaoh and his chiefs saying: “I am a Prophet from the One Who has created the worlds.”

walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi faqāla innī rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُم بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِذَا هُم مِّنۡهَا یَضۡحَكُونَ ۝٤٧

When Moses introduced God’s miracles, they simply laughed

falammā jāahum biāyātinā idhā hum min'hā yaḍḥakūn

وَمَا نُرِیهِم مِّنۡ ءَایَةٍ إِلَّا هِیَ أَكۡبَرُ مِنۡ أُخۡتِهَاۖ وَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٤٨

The miracles were more and more majestic in nature till I sent them the plagues so that they may [come into their senses and] seek refuge in God

wamā nurīhim min āyatin illā hiya akbaru min ukh'tihā wa-akhadhnāhum bil-ʿadhābi laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَ ٱلسَّاحِرُ ٱدۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ إِنَّنَا لَمُهۡتَدُونَ ۝٤٩

They said: “Mr. “magician” ask “your” God , as you have an understanding with him, to remove this plague; we will then follow the right way.”

waqālū yāayyuha l-sāḥiru ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka bimā ʿahida ʿindaka innanā lamuh'tadūn

فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِذَا هُمۡ یَنكُثُونَ ۝٥٠

However, when I removed the plagues, they denied their promises [of following the right path.]

falammā kashafnā ʿanhumu l-ʿadhāba idhā hum yankuthūn

وَنَادَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی قَوۡمِهِۦ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَلَیۡسَ لِی مُلۡكُ مِصۡرَ وَهَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِیۤۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٥١

One day Pharaoh proclaimed: “Do not you see that the kingdom of Egypt with all its rivers belong to me?”

wanādā fir'ʿawnu fī qawmihi qāla yāqawmi alaysa lī mul'ku miṣ'ra wahādhihi l-anhāru tajrī min taḥtī afalā tub'ṣirūn

أَمۡ أَنَا۠ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِی هُوَ مَهِینࣱ وَلَا یَكَادُ یُبِینُ ۝٥٢

“See for yourself who is better; I or this lowly (Moses) one who can not even speak fluently!”

am anā khayrun min hādhā alladhī huwa mahīnun walā yakādu yubīn

فَلَوۡلَاۤ أُلۡقِیَ عَلَیۡهِ أَسۡوِرَةࣱ مِّن ذَهَبٍ أَوۡ جَاۤءَ مَعَهُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ مُقۡتَرِنِینَ ۝٥٣

“How come he does not own the golden bracelet of nobility or an army of angles as his bodyguards?”

falawlā ul'qiya ʿalayhi aswiratun min dhahabin aw jāa maʿahu l-malāikatu muq'tarinīn

فَٱسۡتَخَفَّ قَوۡمَهُۥ فَأَطَاعُوهُۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَوۡمࣰا فَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٥٤

Pharaoh degraded his people and they accepted it as they were not noble people

fa-is'takhaffa qawmahu fa-aṭāʿūhu innahum kānū qawman fāsiqīn

فَلَمَّاۤ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَأَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٥٥

When they persisted in wrongdoing, I punished them by drowning them all

falammā āsafūnā intaqamnā min'hum fa-aghraqnāhum ajmaʿīn

فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ سَلَفࣰا وَمَثَلࣰا لِّلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٥٦

May this be a precedent [for those who never learn from the history] and a lesson [for those who are intelligent enough to learn a lesson.]

fajaʿalnāhum salafan wamathalan lil'ākhirīn

6 Jesus as a Prophet

۞ وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوۡمُكَ مِنۡهُ یَصِدُّونَ ۝٥٧

[As another example of the previous prophet’s teachings,] When the case of Jesus was mentioned, the disbelievers made a mockery saying

walammā ḍuriba ub'nu maryama mathalan idhā qawmuka min'hu yaṣiddūn

وَقَالُوۤا۟ ءَأَ ٰلِهَتُنَا خَیۡرٌ أَمۡ هُوَۚ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلَۢاۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٌ خَصِمُونَ ۝٥٨

“Who is better to worship, our gods or Jesus?” They said this in the spirit of dispute [and not a sincere discussion.] They are indeed nothing but a bunch of argumentative people

waqālū aālihatunā khayrun am huwa mā ḍarabūhu laka illā jadalan bal hum qawmun khaṣimūn

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا عَبۡدٌ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ مَثَلࣰا لِّبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

Jesus was no more than a servant of God whom I favored and sent as a prophet to the Jews

in huwa illā ʿabdun anʿamnā ʿalayhi wajaʿalnāhu mathalan libanī is'rāīl

وَلَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلۡنَا مِنكُم مَّلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَخۡلُفُونَ ۝٦٠

If it pleases to me, I can turn some of you into Angles [in nature] and let you reproduce and take over the earth

walaw nashāu lajaʿalnā minkum malāikatan fī l-arḍi yakhlufūn

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَعِلۡمࣱ لِّلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمۡتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَٱتَّبِعُونِۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣱ ۝٦١

His birth [most probably the second coming (birth) of Christ] is the sign for upcoming Day of resurrection. Therefore do not have any doubt about it [Jesus or Resurrection] and follow Me (God) as this is the straight path

wa-innahu laʿil'mun lilssāʿati falā tamtarunna bihā wa-ittabiʿūni hādhā ṣirāṭun mus'taqīmu

وَلَا یَصُدَّنَّكُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٦٢

Do not let the Satan talk you into denying it [the resurrection]; Satan is your true enemy

walā yaṣuddannakumu l-shayṭānu innahu lakum ʿaduwwun mubīnu

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ عِیسَىٰ بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ قَالَ قَدۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِٱلۡحِكۡمَةِ وَلِأُبَیِّنَ لَكُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی تَخۡتَلِفُونَ فِیهِۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝٦٣

[Another example of the previous Prophets teachings is Jesus] When Jesus came with undeniable miracles, he said: “I have brought wisdom to you. I have come to make clear what you are differing in; respect God’s law and follow me.”

walammā jāa ʿīsā bil-bayināti qāla qad ji'tukum bil-ḥik'mati wali-ubayyina lakum baʿḍa alladhī takhtalifūna fīhi fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ رَبِّی وَرَبُّكُمۡ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣱ ۝٦٤

“The fact is that God is my Teacher and your Teacher; Worship Him alone [see Mathew 4-10]; this is the Straight Way.”

inna l-laha huwa rabbī warabbukum fa-uʿ'budūhu hādhā ṣirāṭun mus'taqīmu

فَٱخۡتَلَفَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ مِنۢ بَیۡنِهِمۡۖ فَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنۡ عَذَابِ یَوۡمٍ أَلِیمٍ ۝٦٥

But in spite of his clear teachings [about worshipping none but God], his followers disagreed among themselves. What a punishment awaits for those who initiated these disagreements on the Day of Judgment

fa-ikh'talafa l-aḥzābu min baynihim fawaylun lilladhīna ẓalamū min ʿadhābi yawmin alīmi

هَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٦٦

What are the disbelievers waiting for [what are they wasting their time on]? Are they waiting [wasting their lives in vain] for the Day [of resurrection] which will overtake them unexpectedly

hal yanẓurūna illā l-sāʿata an tatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

ٱلۡأَخِلَّاۤءُ یَوۡمَىِٕذِۭ بَعۡضُهُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٦٧

On that Day the friends will turn into enemies, save the righteous ones

al-akhilāu yawma-idhin baʿḍuhum libaʿḍin ʿaduwwun illā l-mutaqīn

7 The Two Parties

یَـٰعِبَادِ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ وَلَاۤ أَنتُمۡ تَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٦٨

The believers will be assured: “My servants, do not have any fear and grief today.”

yāʿibādi lā khawfun ʿalaykumu l-yawma walā antum taḥzanūn

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ مُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٦٩

“You believed in My revelations and submitted yourselves to my laws.”

alladhīna āmanū biāyātinā wakānū mus'limīn

ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ أَنتُمۡ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجُكُمۡ تُحۡبَرُونَ ۝٧٠

“You and your [believing] spouses enter to paradise and find happiness there.”

ud'khulū l-janata antum wa-azwājukum tuḥ'barūn

یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِصِحَافࣲ مِّن ذَهَبࣲ وَأَكۡوَابࣲۖ وَفِیهَا مَا تَشۡتَهِیهِ ٱلۡأَنفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ ٱلۡأَعۡیُنُۖ وَأَنتُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٧١

“You will be served drinks in golden cups passing around in golden trays. You will find everything your heart desires and your eyes pleases. You will live therein forever.”

yuṭāfu ʿalayhim biṣiḥāfin min dhahabin wa-akwābin wafīhā mā tashtahīhi l-anfusu wataladhu l-aʿyunu wa-antum fīhā khālidūn

وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِیۤ أُورِثۡتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٧٢

“Such is the Paradise that you inherit as a reward for your good deeds.”

watil'ka l-janatu allatī ūrith'tumūhā bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

لَكُمۡ فِیهَا فَـٰكِهَةࣱ كَثِیرَةࣱ مِّنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٧٣

“There, you will find any kind of fruit that you may eat.”

lakum fīhā fākihatun kathīratun min'hā takulūn

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ فِی عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٧٤

As for the disbelievers, they will be tortured in the Hell forever

inna l-muj'rimīna fī ʿadhābi jahannama khālidūn

لَا یُفَتَّرُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَهُمۡ فِیهِ مُبۡلِسُونَ ۝٧٥

Their punishment will never be reduced and they will live there in despair

lā yufattaru ʿanhum wahum fīhi mub'lisūn

وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٧٦

I (God) was not unjust to them, they themselves were unjust

wamā ẓalamnāhum walākin kānū humu l-ẓālimīn

وَنَادَوۡا۟ یَـٰمَـٰلِكُ لِیَقۡضِ عَلَیۡنَا رَبُّكَۖ قَالَ إِنَّكُم مَّـٰكِثُونَ ۝٧٧

They will beg: “O Keeper of the Hell, ask God to finish us off.” He will reply: “No, you are condemned to suffer forever.”

wanādaw yāmāliku liyaqḍi ʿalaynā rabbuka qāla innakum mākithūn

لَقَدۡ جِئۡنَـٰكُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَكُمۡ لِلۡحَقِّ كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٧٨

We offered you the truth but most of you resented the truth

laqad ji'nākum bil-ḥaqi walākinna aktharakum lil'ḥaqqi kārihūn

أَمۡ أَبۡرَمُوۤا۟ أَمۡرࣰا فَإِنَّا مُبۡرِمُونَ ۝٧٩

They came with a plan [against Mohammad], I (God), too came with My plan

am abramū amran fa-innā mub'rimūn

أَمۡ یَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّا لَا نَسۡمَعُ سِرَّهُمۡ وَنَجۡوَىٰهُمۚ بَلَىٰ وَرُسُلُنَا لَدَیۡهِمۡ یَكۡتُبُونَ ۝٨٠

Do they think that I do not hear their secret talks and their whisperings? I hear everything and my angels at their sides record everything

am yaḥsabūna annā lā nasmaʿu sirrahum wanajwāhum balā warusulunā ladayhim yaktubūn

قُلۡ إِن كَانَ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ وَلَدࣱ فَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡعَـٰبِدِینَ ۝٨١

Say: “If the Most Gracious had a son, I [am not stubborn and] would be the first to worship him.”

qul in kāna lilrraḥmāni waladun fa-anā awwalu l-ʿābidīn

سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَرۡشِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝٨٢

Glorified is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. The Lord of the Dominion is far superior than what they attribute to

sub'ḥāna rabbi l-samāwāti wal-arḍi rabbi l-ʿarshi ʿammā yaṣifūn

فَذَرۡهُمۡ یَخُوضُوا۟ وَیَلۡعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یُلَـٰقُوا۟ یَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یُوعَدُونَ ۝٨٣

Let them be amused by their fabrications till they see the Day which is waiting them

fadharhum yakhūḍū wayalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu alladhī yūʿadūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَفِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَـٰهࣱۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٨٤

He is the Lord in the Heavens. He is the Lord on the earth. He is the Most Wise, the Most knowledgeable

wahuwa alladhī fī l-samāi ilāhun wafī l-arḍi ilāhun wahuwa l-ḥakīmu l-ʿalīm

وَتَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِی لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٨٥

Highly blessed is He to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything between them. He is the only One Who knows when the Resurrection will take place; and to Him you will all return

watabāraka alladhī lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā waʿindahu ʿil'mu l-sāʿati wa-ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

وَلَا یَمۡلِكُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَن شَهِدَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٦

None of those whom they idolize will ask God for mercy; on the contrary, they will testify for the truth [against them.]

walā yamliku alladhīna yadʿūna min dūnihi l-shafāʿata illā man shahida bil-ḥaqi wahum yaʿlamūn

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَهُمۡ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٨٧

When you ask they who created them, they will say God. What is their problem then

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqahum layaqūlunna l-lahu fa-annā yu'fakūn

وَقِیلِهِۦ یَـٰرَبِّ إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٨٨

God hears His Prophet’s voice when he says: “By Lord, these people will never submit.”

waqīlihi yārabbi inna hāulāi qawmun lā yu'minūn

فَٱصۡفَحۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَقُلۡ سَلَـٰمࣱۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٩

[Do not confront them then.] Whenever you encounter them just wish them peace; soon they will surely find out

fa-iṣ'faḥ ʿanhum waqul salāmun fasawfa yaʿlamūn
