وَٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢

N J Dawood 2014

By the veritable Book

wal-kitābi l-mubīn

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَ ٰنًا عَرَبِیࣰّا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣

N J Dawood 2014

We have revealed it an Arabic Koran, that perchance you may understand it

innā jaʿalnāhu qur'ānan ʿarabiyyan laʿallakum taʿqilūn

وَإِنَّهُۥ فِیۤ أُمِّ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَدَیۡنَا لَعَلِیٌّ حَكِیمٌ ۝٤

It is a transcript of the Eternal Book in Our keeping, sublime, and full of wisdom

wa-innahu fī ummi l-kitābi ladaynā laʿaliyyun ḥakīmu

أَفَنَضۡرِبُ عَنكُمُ ٱلذِّكۡرَ صَفۡحًا أَن كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا مُّسۡرِفِینَ ۝٥

Should We hold back the Admonition from you simply because you are a prodigal people

afanaḍribu ʿankumu l-dhik'ra ṣafḥan an kuntum qawman mus'rifīn

وَكَمۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن نَّبِیࣲّ فِی ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٦

Many a prophet did We send forth to the ancients

wakam arsalnā min nabiyyin fī l-awalīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن نَّبِیٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٧

but no prophet did arise among them that they did not mock

wamā yatīhim min nabiyyin illā kānū bihi yastahziūn

فَأَهۡلَكۡنَاۤ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشࣰا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٨

We obliterated them, though they were mightier than these.¹ Such then, was the example of the ancients

fa-ahlaknā ashadda min'hum baṭshan wamaḍā mathalu l-awalīn

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَیَقُولُنَّ خَلَقَهُنَّ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٩

Yet, if you ask them¹ who created the heavens and the earth, they are bound to say: ‘The Almighty, the All-knowing, created them.‘

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa layaqūlunna khalaqahunna l-ʿazīzu l-ʿalīm

ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَهۡدࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمۡ فِیهَا سُبُلࣰا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٠

He it is who has made the earth a cradle for you and traced out routes upon it that you may find your way

alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa mahdan wajaʿala lakum fīhā subulan laʿallakum tahtadūn

وَٱلَّذِی نَزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءَۢ بِقَدَرࣲ فَأَنشَرۡنَا بِهِۦ بَلۡدَةࣰ مَّیۡتࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ تُخۡرَجُونَ ۝١١

who sends down water from the sky in due measure and thereby We resurrect a dead land: even thus shall you be raised to life

wa-alladhī nazzala mina l-samāi māan biqadarin fa-ansharnā bihi baldatan maytan kadhālika tukh'rajūn

وَٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَزۡوَ ٰجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ مَا تَرۡكَبُونَ ۝١٢

who has created all living things in pairs and made for you the ships and beasts on which you ride

wa-alladhī khalaqa l-azwāja kullahā wajaʿala lakum mina l-ful'ki wal-anʿāmi mā tarkabūn

لِتَسۡتَوُۥا۟ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِۦ ثُمَّ تَذۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ رَبِّكُمۡ إِذَا ٱسۡتَوَیۡتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ وَتَقُولُوا۟ سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقۡرِنِینَ ۝١٣

so that, as you rest upon their backs, you may recall the goodness of your Lord and say: ‘Glory to Him who has subjected these to us. But for Him we could not be their masters

litastawū ʿalā ẓuhūrihi thumma tadhkurū niʿ'mata rabbikum idhā is'tawaytum ʿalayhi wataqūlū sub'ḥāna alladhī sakhara lanā hādhā wamā kunnā lahu muq'rinīn

وَإِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ ۝١٤

To our Lord we shall surely return.‘

wa-innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn

وَجَعَلُوا۟ لَهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ جُزۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَكَفُورࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥

Yet they¹ assign to Him some from among His servants. Surely man is monstrously ungrateful

wajaʿalū lahu min ʿibādihi juz'an inna l-insāna lakafūrun mubīnu

2 Polytheism condemned

أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ مِمَّا یَخۡلُقُ بَنَاتࣲ وَأَصۡفَىٰكُم بِٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٦

Would God choose daughters for Himself from what He created and favour you with sons?²

ami ittakhadha mimmā yakhluqu banātin wa-aṣfākum bil-banīn

وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مَثَلࣰا ظَلَّ وَجۡهُهُۥ مُسۡوَدࣰّا وَهُوَ كَظِیمٌ ۝١٧

And yet when the birth of a female is announced to any of them his countenance darkens and he is grievously vexed

wa-idhā bushira aḥaduhum bimā ḍaraba lilrraḥmāni mathalan ẓalla wajhuhu mus'waddan wahuwa kaẓīmu

أَوَ مَن یُنَشَّؤُا۟ فِی ٱلۡحِلۡیَةِ وَهُوَ فِی ٱلۡخِصَامِ غَیۡرُ مُبِینࣲ ۝١٨

Or would they ascribe to God females who adorn themselves with trinkets and are powerless in disputation

awaman yunasha-u fī l-ḥil'yati wahuwa fī l-khiṣāmi ghayru mubīni

وَجَعَلُوا۟ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عِبَـٰدُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ إِنَـٰثًاۚ أَشَهِدُوا۟ خَلۡقَهُمۡۚ سَتُكۡتَبُ شَهَـٰدَتُهُمۡ وَیُسۡءَلُونَ ۝١٩

They make females the angels who are the Merciful‘s servants: did they witness their creation? Their testimony shall be noted down; and they shall be closely questioned

wajaʿalū l-malāikata alladhīna hum ʿibādu l-raḥmāni ināthan ashahidū khalqahum satuk'tabu shahādatuhum wayus'alūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ مَا عَبَدۡنَـٰهُمۗ مَّا لَهُم بِذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَخۡرُصُونَ ۝٢٠

They say: ‘Had it been the will of the Merciful, we should never have worshipped them.‘ Surely of this they have no knowledge: they are only lying

waqālū law shāa l-raḥmānu mā ʿabadnāhum mā lahum bidhālika min ʿil'min in hum illā yakhruṣūn

أَمۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ كِتَـٰبࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ فَهُم بِهِۦ مُسۡتَمۡسِكُونَ ۝٢١

Or have We given them a scripture before this, so that they should hold fast to it

am ātaynāhum kitāban min qablihi fahum bihi mus'tamsikūn

بَلۡ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا عَلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٢٢

Indeed, they say: ‘This was the faith our fathers practised; and we are merely guided by their footsteps.‘

bal qālū innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muh'tadūn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ مَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِی قَرۡیَةࣲ مِّن نَّذِیرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَاۤ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا عَلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم مُّقۡتَدُونَ ۝٢٣

Thus, never did We sent forth before you to a city one to give warning, but those who lived therein in opulence said: ‘This was the faith our fathers practised; and we are merely following in their footsteps.‘

wakadhālika mā arsalnā min qablika fī qaryatin min nadhīrin illā qāla mut'rafūhā innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muq'tadūn

۞ قَـٰلَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِأَهۡدَىٰ مِمَّا وَجَدتُّمۡ عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَكُمۡۖ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا بِمَاۤ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٢٤

N J Dawood 2014

Each of them said: ‘What if I bring you a faith more enlightened than your fathers‘?‘ But they said: ‘We reject the message you have been sent with.‘

qāla awalaw ji'tukum bi-ahdā mimmā wajadttum ʿalayhi ābāakum qālū innā bimā ur'sil'tum bihi kāfirūn

فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٢٥

N J Dawood 2014

So We took vengeance on them; and consider the fate of those who disbelieved

fa-intaqamnā min'hum fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīn

3 Allah's Choice of a Prophet

وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنَّنِی بَرَاۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٦

N J Dawood 2014

And tell of Abraham, who said to his father and to his people: ‘I renounce the gods you worship,

wa-idh qāla ib'rāhīmu li-abīhi waqawmihi innanī barāon mimmā taʿbudūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِی فَطَرَنِی فَإِنَّهُۥ سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٢٧

N J Dawood 2014

except Him who created me, for He will rightly guide me.‘

illā alladhī faṭaranī fa-innahu sayahdīn

وَجَعَلَهَا كَلِمَةَۢ بَاقِیَةࣰ فِی عَقِبِهِۦ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٢٨

He made this an abiding precept among his descendants, that they might for ever turn to Him

wajaʿalahā kalimatan bāqiyatan fī ʿaqibihi laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

بَلۡ مَتَّعۡتُ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ وَءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَرَسُولࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٢٩

N J Dawood 2014

Indeed, I made things pleasant for these and for their fathers until there came to them the Truth and an undoubted Apostle

bal mattaʿtu hāulāi waābāahum ḥattā jāahumu l-ḥaqu warasūlun mubīnu

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحۡرࣱ وَإِنَّا بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٣٠

But now that the Truth has come to them, they say: ‘This is sorcery. We utterly reject it.‘

walammā jāahumu l-ḥaqu qālū hādhā siḥ'run wa-innā bihi kāfirūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡقَرۡیَتَیۡنِ عَظِیمٍ ۝٣١

N J Dawood 2014

They also say: ‘Why has this Koran not been revealed to some important man from the two cities?‘¹

waqālū lawlā nuzzila hādhā l-qur'ānu ʿalā rajulin mina l-qaryatayni ʿaẓīmi

أَهُمۡ یَقۡسِمُونَ رَحۡمَتَ رَبِّكَۚ نَحۡنُ قَسَمۡنَا بَیۡنَهُم مَّعِیشَتَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَرَفَعۡنَا بَعۡضَهُمۡ فَوۡقَ بَعۡضࣲ دَرَجَـٰتࣲ لِّیَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُهُم بَعۡضࣰا سُخۡرِیࣰّاۗ وَرَحۡمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَیۡرࣱ مِّمَّا یَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٣٢

N J Dawood 2014

Is it they who apportion your Lord‘s blessings? It is We who deal out to them their livelihood in this world, exalting some in rank above others, so that the one may take the other into his service. Better is your Lord‘s mercy than all their hoarded treasures

ahum yaqsimūna raḥmata rabbika naḥnu qasamnā baynahum maʿīshatahum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā warafaʿnā baʿḍahum fawqa baʿḍin darajātin liyattakhidha baʿḍuhum baʿḍan sukh'riyyan waraḥmatu rabbika khayrun mimmā yajmaʿūn

وَلَوۡلَاۤ أَن یَكُونَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ لَّجَعَلۡنَا لِمَن یَكۡفُرُ بِٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ لِبُیُوتِهِمۡ سُقُفࣰا مِّن فِضَّةࣲ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَیۡهَا یَظۡهَرُونَ ۝٣٣

But for the chance that all humankind might have become one race of unbelievers, We would have given those who denied the Lord of Mercy mansions with silver roofs, and stairs to ascend to; mansions with silver gate

walawlā an yakūna l-nāsu ummatan wāḥidatan lajaʿalnā liman yakfuru bil-raḥmāni libuyūtihim suqufan min fiḍḍatin wamaʿārija ʿalayhā yaẓharūn

وَلِبُیُوتِهِمۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبࣰا وَسُرُرًا عَلَیۡهَا یَتَّكِءُونَ ۝٣٤

and silver couches to recline on;

walibuyūtihim abwāban wasururan ʿalayhā yattakiūn

وَزُخۡرُفࣰاۚ وَإِن كُلُّ ذَ ٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣٥

N J Dawood 2014

and ornaments of gold: for all these are but the baubles of this life. It is the life to come that your Lord reserves for those who fear Him

wazukh'rufan wa-in kullu dhālika lammā matāʿu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wal-ākhiratu ʿinda rabbika lil'muttaqīn

4 Opposition to Truth is punished

وَمَن یَعۡشُ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ نُقَیِّضۡ لَهُۥ شَیۡطَـٰنࣰا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِینࣱ ۝٣٦

He that does not observe the remembrance of the Merciful shall have a demon for his companion

waman yaʿshu ʿan dhik'ri l-raḥmāni nuqayyiḍ lahu shayṭānan fahuwa lahu qarīnu

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَیَصُدُّونَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٣٧

they turn people away from the right path, though they may think themselves rightly guided

wa-innahum layaṣuddūnahum ʿani l-sabīli wayaḥsabūna annahum muh'tadūn

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَنَا قَالَ یَـٰلَیۡتَ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكَ بُعۡدَ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقَیۡنِ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡقَرِینُ ۝٣٨

N J Dawood 2014

And when he comes before Us, he shall say:² ‘Would that we were as far apart as the East is from the West.‘ Evil indeed is that companion

ḥattā idhā jāanā qāla yālayta baynī wabaynaka buʿ'da l-mashriqayni fabi'sa l-qarīn

وَلَن یَنفَعَكُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ إِذ ظَّلَمۡتُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٩

But on that day, because you have done wrong, the thought that you will share the scourge with others will not console you

walan yanfaʿakumu l-yawma idh ẓalamtum annakum fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn

أَفَأَنتَ تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ أَوۡ تَهۡدِی ٱلۡعُمۡیَ وَمَن كَانَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٤٠

Can you make the deaf hear, or guide the blind or those in grievous error

afa-anta tus'miʿu l-ṣuma aw tahdī l-ʿum'ya waman kāna fī ḍalālin mubīni

فَإِمَّا نَذۡهَبَنَّ بِكَ فَإِنَّا مِنۡهُم مُّنتَقِمُونَ ۝٤١

Whether We take you hence or let you live to see Our promises fulfilled, of them We shall surely be avenged

fa-immā nadhhabanna bika fa-innā min'hum muntaqimūn

أَوۡ نُرِیَنَّكَ ٱلَّذِی وَعَدۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَإِنَّا عَلَیۡهِم مُّقۡتَدِرُونَ ۝٤٢

for We have power absolute over them

aw nuriyannaka alladhī waʿadnāhum fa-innā ʿalayhim muq'tadirūn

فَٱسۡتَمۡسِكۡ بِٱلَّذِیۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٤٣

Therefore hold fast to that which was revealed to you: you are surely on a straight path

fa-is'tamsik bi-alladhī ūḥiya ilayka innaka ʿalā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذِكۡرࣱ لَّكَ وَلِقَوۡمِكَۖ وَسَوۡفَ تُسۡءَلُونَ ۝٤٤

It is an Admonition to you and to your people: and you shall be questioned all

wa-innahu ladhik'run laka waliqawmika wasawfa tus'alūn

وَسۡءَلۡ مَنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَاۤ أَجَعَلۡنَا مِن دُونِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ءَالِهَةࣰ یُعۡبَدُونَ ۝٤٥

Ask those of Our apostles whom We sent before you if We ever appointed gods besides the Merciful to be worshipped

wasal man arsalnā min qablika min rusulinā ajaʿalnā min dūni l-raḥmāni ālihatan yuʿ'badūn

5 Pharaoh's Opposition to Moses

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ فَقَالَ إِنِّی رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٦

N J Dawood 2014

We sent forth Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: ‘I am the apostle of the Lord of the Universe.‘

walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi faqāla innī rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُم بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِذَا هُم مِّنۡهَا یَضۡحَكُونَ ۝٤٧

But when he came to them with Our signs they laughed at them;

falammā jāahum biāyātinā idhā hum min'hā yaḍḥakūn

وَمَا نُرِیهِم مِّنۡ ءَایَةٍ إِلَّا هِیَ أَكۡبَرُ مِنۡ أُخۡتِهَاۖ وَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٤٨

N J Dawood 2014

yet each fresh sign We revealed to them was more powerful than the one that came before it. We therefore smote them with the scourge, so that they might return to the right path

wamā nurīhim min āyatin illā hiya akbaru min ukh'tihā wa-akhadhnāhum bil-ʿadhābi laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَ ٱلسَّاحِرُ ٱدۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ إِنَّنَا لَمُهۡتَدُونَ ۝٤٩

You, sorcerer,‘ they said, ‘pray for us to your Lord and invoke the promise He has made you. We will accept your guidance.‘

waqālū yāayyuha l-sāḥiru ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka bimā ʿahida ʿindaka innanā lamuh'tadūn

فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِذَا هُمۡ یَنكُثُونَ ۝٥٠

But when We removed the scourge from them, they broke their pledge

falammā kashafnā ʿanhumu l-ʿadhāba idhā hum yankuthūn

وَنَادَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی قَوۡمِهِۦ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَلَیۡسَ لِی مُلۡكُ مِصۡرَ وَهَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِیۤۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٥١

And Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people. ‘My people,‘ said he, ‘is the kingdom of Egypt not mine, and are these rivers which flow at my feet not mine also? Can you not see

wanādā fir'ʿawnu fī qawmihi qāla yāqawmi alaysa lī mul'ku miṣ'ra wahādhihi l-anhāru tajrī min taḥtī afalā tub'ṣirūn

أَمۡ أَنَا۠ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِی هُوَ مَهِینࣱ وَلَا یَكَادُ یُبِینُ ۝٥٢

Am I not better than this despicable wretch, who can scarcely make his utterance clear

am anā khayrun min hādhā alladhī huwa mahīnun walā yakādu yubīn

فَلَوۡلَاۤ أُلۡقِیَ عَلَیۡهِ أَسۡوِرَةࣱ مِّن ذَهَبٍ أَوۡ جَاۤءَ مَعَهُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ مُقۡتَرِنِینَ ۝٥٣

Why have no bracelets of gold been given him, or angels sent down to accompany him?‘

falawlā ul'qiya ʿalayhi aswiratun min dhahabin aw jāa maʿahu l-malāikatu muq'tarinīn

فَٱسۡتَخَفَّ قَوۡمَهُۥ فَأَطَاعُوهُۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَوۡمࣰا فَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٥٤

Thus did he incite his people: and they obeyed him, for they were degenerate people

fa-is'takhaffa qawmahu fa-aṭāʿūhu innahum kānū qawman fāsiqīn

فَلَمَّاۤ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَأَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٥٥

And when they provoked Us, We took vengeance on them and drowned them all

falammā āsafūnā intaqamnā min'hum fa-aghraqnāhum ajmaʿīn

فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ سَلَفࣰا وَمَثَلࣰا لِّلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٥٦

as a precedent and an example to those who succeeded them

fajaʿalnāhum salafan wamathalan lil'ākhirīn

6 Jesus as a Prophet

۞ وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوۡمُكَ مِنۡهُ یَصِدُّونَ ۝٥٧

And when Mary‘s son is cited as an example, your people turn awa

walammā ḍuriba ub'nu maryama mathalan idhā qawmuka min'hu yaṣiddūn

وَقَالُوۤا۟ ءَأَ ٰلِهَتُنَا خَیۡرٌ أَمۡ هُوَۚ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلَۢاۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٌ خَصِمُونَ ۝٥٨

N J Dawood 2014

and say: ‘Who is better, he or our gods?‘ They cite him to you merely to provoke you. They are indeed a contentious people

waqālū aālihatunā khayrun am huwa mā ḍarabūhu laka illā jadalan bal hum qawmun khaṣimūn

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا عَبۡدٌ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ مَثَلࣰا لِّبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

He was but a mortal whom We favoured and made an example to the Israelites

in huwa illā ʿabdun anʿamnā ʿalayhi wajaʿalnāhu mathalan libanī is'rāīl

وَلَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلۡنَا مِنكُم مَّلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَخۡلُفُونَ ۝٦٠

Had it been Our will, We could have turned you into angels, your successors on the earth

walaw nashāu lajaʿalnā minkum malāikatan fī l-arḍi yakhlufūn

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَعِلۡمࣱ لِّلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمۡتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَٱتَّبِعُونِۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣱ ۝٦١

He is a portent of the Hour: have no doubt about its coming and follow Me

wa-innahu laʿil'mun lilssāʿati falā tamtarunna bihā wa-ittabiʿūni hādhā ṣirāṭun mus'taqīmu

وَلَا یَصُدَّنَّكُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٦٢

This is a straight path: let not Satan debar you, for he is your veritable foe

walā yaṣuddannakumu l-shayṭānu innahu lakum ʿaduwwun mubīnu

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ عِیسَىٰ بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ قَالَ قَدۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِٱلۡحِكۡمَةِ وَلِأُبَیِّنَ لَكُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی تَخۡتَلِفُونَ فِیهِۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝٦٣

N J Dawood 2014

And when Jesus came with evident signs, he said: ‘I have come to give you wisdom, and to make plain to you some of the things you differ about. Fear God and follow me

walammā jāa ʿīsā bil-bayināti qāla qad ji'tukum bil-ḥik'mati wali-ubayyina lakum baʿḍa alladhī takhtalifūna fīhi fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ رَبِّی وَرَبُّكُمۡ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣱ ۝٦٤

N J Dawood 2014

God is my Lord and your Lord: therefore serve Him. That is a straight path.‘

inna l-laha huwa rabbī warabbukum fa-uʿ'budūhu hādhā ṣirāṭun mus'taqīmu

فَٱخۡتَلَفَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ مِنۢ بَیۡنِهِمۡۖ فَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنۡ عَذَابِ یَوۡمٍ أَلِیمٍ ۝٦٥

Yet the factions disagreed among themselves. But woe betide the wrongdoers, for they shall suffer the anguish of a woeful day

fa-ikh'talafa l-aḥzābu min baynihim fawaylun lilladhīna ẓalamū min ʿadhābi yawmin alīmi

هَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٦٦

Are they only waiting for the Hour to overtake them suddenly when they are unaware

hal yanẓurūna illā l-sāʿata an tatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

ٱلۡأَخِلَّاۤءُ یَوۡمَىِٕذِۭ بَعۡضُهُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٦٧

Friends shall on that day become enemies to one another, except the God-fearing

al-akhilāu yawma-idhin baʿḍuhum libaʿḍin ʿaduwwun illā l-mutaqīn

7 The Two Parties

یَـٰعِبَادِ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ وَلَاۤ أَنتُمۡ تَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٦٨

But you, My servants, who have believed in Our revelation

yāʿibādi lā khawfun ʿalaykumu l-yawma walā antum taḥzanūn

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ مُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٦٩

and are become Muslims, shall on that day have nothing to fear or to regret

alladhīna āmanū biāyātinā wakānū mus'limīn

ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ أَنتُمۡ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجُكُمۡ تُحۡبَرُونَ ۝٧٠

Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, rejoicing

ud'khulū l-janata antum wa-azwājukum tuḥ'barūn

یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِصِحَافࣲ مِّن ذَهَبࣲ وَأَكۡوَابࣲۖ وَفِیهَا مَا تَشۡتَهِیهِ ٱلۡأَنفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ ٱلۡأَعۡیُنُۖ وَأَنتُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٧١

N J Dawood 2014

You shall be served around with golden dishes and golden goblets. Therein shall abound what every soul desires and every eye delights in; and therein shall you abide for ever

yuṭāfu ʿalayhim biṣiḥāfin min dhahabin wa-akwābin wafīhā mā tashtahīhi l-anfusu wataladhu l-aʿyunu wa-antum fīhā khālidūn

وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِیۤ أُورِثۡتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٧٢

And such is the Paradise you shall inherit by virtue of your good deeds

watil'ka l-janatu allatī ūrith'tumūhā bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

لَكُمۡ فِیهَا فَـٰكِهَةࣱ كَثِیرَةࣱ مِّنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٧٣

Therein your sustenance shall be abundant fruit

lakum fīhā fākihatun kathīratun min'hā takulūn

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ فِی عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٧٤

But the transgressors shall endure for ever the torment of Hell

inna l-muj'rimīna fī ʿadhābi jahannama khālidūn

لَا یُفَتَّرُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَهُمۡ فِیهِ مُبۡلِسُونَ ۝٧٥

which for them will not be assuaged; they shall be speechless with despair

lā yufattaru ʿanhum wahum fīhi mub'lisūn

وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٧٦

We did not wrong them, but it was they who did wrong

wamā ẓalamnāhum walākin kānū humu l-ẓālimīn

وَنَادَوۡا۟ یَـٰمَـٰلِكُ لِیَقۡضِ عَلَیۡنَا رَبُّكَۖ قَالَ إِنَّكُم مَّـٰكِثُونَ ۝٧٧

Malik,‘¹ they will call out, ‘let your Lord make an end of us!‘ But he will say: ‘Here you shall remain!‘

wanādaw yāmāliku liyaqḍi ʿalaynā rabbuka qāla innakum mākithūn

لَقَدۡ جِئۡنَـٰكُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَكُمۡ لِلۡحَقِّ كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٧٨

We have made known to you the Truth, but most of you the Truth abhor

laqad ji'nākum bil-ḥaqi walākinna aktharakum lil'ḥaqqi kārihūn

أَمۡ أَبۡرَمُوۤا۟ أَمۡرࣰا فَإِنَّا مُبۡرِمُونَ ۝٧٩

N J Dawood 2014

If they are resolved to ruin you,² We are resolved to ruin them

am abramū amran fa-innā mub'rimūn

أَمۡ یَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّا لَا نَسۡمَعُ سِرَّهُمۡ وَنَجۡوَىٰهُمۚ بَلَىٰ وَرُسُلُنَا لَدَیۡهِمۡ یَكۡتُبُونَ ۝٨٠

Or do they think We cannot hear their secret talk and private converse? Yes! Our emissaries, at their side, record it all

am yaḥsabūna annā lā nasmaʿu sirrahum wanajwāhum balā warusulunā ladayhim yaktubūn

قُلۡ إِن كَانَ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ وَلَدࣱ فَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡعَـٰبِدِینَ ۝٨١

Say:³ ‘If the Lord of Mercy had a son, I would be the first to worship him.‘

qul in kāna lilrraḥmāni waladun fa-anā awwalu l-ʿābidīn

سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَرۡشِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝٨٢

Exalted be the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, above their falsehoods

sub'ḥāna rabbi l-samāwāti wal-arḍi rabbi l-ʿarshi ʿammā yaṣifūn

فَذَرۡهُمۡ یَخُوضُوا۟ وَیَلۡعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یُلَـٰقُوا۟ یَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یُوعَدُونَ ۝٨٣

Let them paddle, let them play, until they face the day they are promised

fadharhum yakhūḍū wayalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu alladhī yūʿadūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَفِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَـٰهࣱۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٨٤

And He it is who in heaven is God and on earth is God; He is the Wise One, the All-knowing

wahuwa alladhī fī l-samāi ilāhun wafī l-arḍi ilāhun wahuwa l-ḥakīmu l-ʿalīm

وَتَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِی لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٨٥

N J Dawood 2014

Blessed be He who has sovereignty over the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them! He alone has knowledge of the Hour, and to Him shall you be recalled

watabāraka alladhī lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā waʿindahu ʿil'mu l-sāʿati wa-ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

وَلَا یَمۡلِكُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَن شَهِدَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٦

Those to whom they pray besides Him have not the power to intercede for them, save those who testify to the Truth and have knowledge of it

walā yamliku alladhīna yadʿūna min dūnihi l-shafāʿata illā man shahida bil-ḥaqi wahum yaʿlamūn

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَهُمۡ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٨٧

N J Dawood 2014

Yet if you ask them who created them, they will surely say, ‘God.‘ How then can they be so misled

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqahum layaqūlunna l-lahu fa-annā yu'fakūn

وَقِیلِهِۦ یَـٰرَبِّ إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٨٨

And he can only says: ‘Lord, these are surely people that do not believe.‘

waqīlihi yārabbi inna hāulāi qawmun lā yu'minūn

فَٱصۡفَحۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَقُلۡ سَلَـٰمࣱۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٩

So bear with them and wish them peace; they shall learn

fa-iṣ'faḥ ʿanhum waqul salāmun fasawfa yaʿlamūn
